Loved the seal and harbor tour from wickford.

Took our 3 grandsons yesterday. Lots of seals. Over 30 in one area alone. They loved seeing the seals and enjoyed the boat ride too. It was a great time for all of us.—Butch A., 2024 Facebook review (photo courtesy of istock/Giblin)

Fun Way To See the Newport Shore

This is a great way to see the harbor and houses around Newport. We were worried about it being too cool this time of year, but there are enclosed areas and it wasn't an issue at all. You get a Mimosa in hand when you walk on board - great way to start! Narration was entertaining and informative. Recommend if you only have a short time in Newport to see the boats and lighthouses.—Wolfshadow, 2023 Trip Advisor review (photo courtesy of J. Giblin)

The Best Small Town Getaway In Rhode Island: Best Things To Do In Newport

N early the entirety of my childhood into early adulthood was spent in Rhode Island. Living in the northern part of the state, Newport was the ultimate town for a day trip. From the mansions to the Cliff Walk to the sailing culture, it’s a dream destination for locals and out-of-state tourists alike. Not only is it postcard-perfect but it offers so much in the way of sights, restaurants, shopping, history, and landmarks. Whether you’re visiting for the first or the 100th time, here are some of the best things to do in Newport, Rhode Island:

History Of Newport

Is newport worth visiting, how to get to newport, getting around newport, best time to visit newport, where to stay in newport, newport sights & landmarks, newport activities & attractions, shops & boutiques in newport, restaurants in newport, nature in and around newport.

Newport was founded in 1639, making it nearly 400 years old. During the early 18th century, it became one of the most important port cities for commerce for the British colonies. Not only were rum, furniture, and whale oil candles (a popular commodity at the time) imported, but enslaved people as well. Once the Revolutionary War began, its economy declined.

But what is Newport known for? Due to its coastal location and mild summers, Newport became a resort destination catching the eyes of some of the most prominent 19th-century families in the Northeast. Families like the Vanderbilts, the Morgans, and the Astors built their stunning summer "cottages" (mansions, really) right here in Newport. These Gilded Age mansions overlooking the ocean were used for just a few months during the year, and then the families would go back to their lives in New York. What a life they lived!

The Gilded Age all but ended once World War I and the Great Depression started. Unable to afford the upkeep, some of the largest and most ornate mansions fell into a state of disrepair, were abandoned, or had eventually succumbed to demolition. Good news came about, however, with the establishment of The Preservation Society of Newport County. The organization's first project was the Hunter House, a centuries-old waterfront colonial. Eventually, their work led to tours of the world-famous Breakers Mansion and acquiring Guilded Age mansions like The Elms, Marble House, and several others. Today, you can tour 10 different mansions through the Preservation Society, and people from all over the world come to do just that.

As someone who grew up in Rhode Island, I can assure you that Newport is always worth visiting.

Located on aquidneck island on the eastern side of rhode island, newport is a mere 1.5 hours from boston and 42 minutes from providence. there are several ways to get here..

The best, and by far the easiest, is by car. If you're traveling from out of town, I suggest you rent one. There's parking all over Newport, if that's something you're worried about. Within the town, there are both public and private parking lots and metered parking. Get to town early, and you can find a spot close to downtown. Otherwise, you may have to walk a short or long distance to get to where you want to go.

You may also want to take a bus from Providence or Newport, which will eliminate the headache of finding a parking spot. Boating to town is another great option or you can take the Newport & Providence Ferry.

While there are public transit options like buses and rideshares around town, I find a private car to be essential to get around Newport. Otherwise, you can get around on foot if you stick to the city's downtown area.

So, why do you need a car? Well, you wouldn't want to miss out on the scenery along Oceanview Drive now would you? I didn't think so. If you don't have a car, you can rent one or hire someone to drive you along this famous route that hugs the coast and takes you past modern-day mansions, Brenton Point State Park, and other notable points of interest.

If you plan on sticking to Thames Street and surrounding areas, you can get around by walking without any need for a vehicle. It's up to you!

Newport is a wonderful town to visit any time of year.

Off-season, you will find that the town is pretty quiet compared to the summer months and the influx of tourists. In the winter, several of the mansions are decked out in lights and Victorian-era decor if that's something of interest to you. Dinner reservations are much easier to obtain as well in the off-season.

However, there's nothing quite like summer in Newport! Although it's crowded, there's such a fun and exciting air around town. Besides, you'll be able to dine outside many places, like the lawn at Castle Hill Inn (one of my favorite places), visit the beach without freezing, go fly a kite at Brenton Point, and watch all of the sailboats and yachts float by in Newport Harbor. While I highly recommend visiting during the summer, it's up to you if you want to fight the crowds in the restaurants and on the street, or spend a little too much time trying to find a parking space downtown.

Hotel Pick: Gardiner House

Airbnb pick: newport condo with harbor view and rooftop deck, bowens wharf, newport mansions.

The Breakers (pictured here) is among the most famous, as well as the largest, of the Newport mansions. If there's only one you can see while you're in town, make it this one that was built by the Vanderbilts. If you plan on visiting several, you can't go wrong with Marble House or The Elms.

Visiting any of the mansions gives great insight into how the wealthy lived around the turn of the century. The grandeur of it all is extraordinary! You can view a full list of mansions on the Newport Mansions website.

Castle Hill Light

Fort adams state park, blithewold mansion, gardens & arboretum, tennis hall of fame museum, thames street.

On and around Thames Street is where you'll find most shops, boutiques, restaurants, and art galleries in Newport. Among the stores I enjoy visiting are a country store named Frazzleberries , Matriarch for gifts, and Newport Original for Rhode Island-made goods.

And just off Thames at 42 Franklin Street is the amazing Atlantic Attic where you can find vintage nautical goods, marine salvage, and other unique items you can't find anywhere else!

Newport Vineyards & Restaurant

The black pearl, beavertail state park, second beach.

We hope you use this as your Newport travel guide! Tell us, what are some of your things to do in Newport? Let us know your favorite sights, restaurants, shops, and more! Honestly, there’s nothing like a day trip or a getaway to Newport, my favorite place to be in Rhode Island!

Sail Newport celebrates 40 years of the Newport Regatta this weekend

NEWPORT – In 1983, the U.S. lost the America's Cup, ending the longest-running winning streak in sports history. The loss of the trophy in Newport presented a gloomy forecast of Newport without sailing and the massive event held in Newport for decades. However, a group of proactive community sailors quickly gathered to start Sail Newport, a nonprofit organization, to recruit sailing events to Newport and foster the sport of sailing

Filling the vacancy of sailing events and boosting the economic vitality of Rhode Island became Sail Newport's mission.  The nonprofit organization worked immediately to fill the sailing calendar with local events.  Less than one sailing season later, in 1984, Sail Newport created the first regatta to fill that void.  The "Newport Regatta" was launched as a one-class event with only Shields racing.  That auspicious start was a promising forebearer for rebuilding Newport as the "Sailing Capitol of the world."

This weekend marks the 40th anniversary of the Newport Regatta at Sail Newport, featuring 10 one-design racing classes. The event has grown so successful over the years that sailors from an average of 17 U.S. states and several countries compete.

“Sailors are captivated by sailing in Newport. What sets the Newport Regatta apart in the sailing world is not only racing on the legendary waters of Narragansett Bay, but also the diverse range of boats that participate. From the nimble Melges 15 sailing dinghies to the Classic S Boats to the majestic 12-Metres, the regatta offers a spectacle of speed, skill, and a captivating variety of both classic and modern sailboats," says Brad Read, executive director of Sail Newport.

This weekend's classes include 12-Metre, 505, Ensign, F-18, S Class, IC-37, Melges 15, Snipe, Thistle, and VX One. Several classes have sanctioned the Newport Regatta as championships, including the 505 New England Championship, the Ensign Regional Championship, and the Thistle Atlantic Coast Championship.

"The Sail Newport Regatta is a foundation of the summer season in Newport. We always have great racing," says Newport Sailor John Hele, an avid sailor on several classes of boats and IC 37 sailor in the weekend’s Newport Regatta.

The local waters will be a grand spectacle of sailboats as sailors race in four areas on Saturday and Sunday. The race boats will leave from Sail Newport in Fort Adams State Park or from their moorings or slips to racing circles, including offshore of Brenton Point, between Rose and Goat islands, North of the Newport Bridge in the Potters Cove Area, and near Gould Island.

"The Newport Regatta brings the one-design world together, joining classics like the Snipe and Thistle with newer manufacturer classes. Happy 40th anniversary, and thanks to Sail Newport for coordinating the thousands of logistics and moving parts that go into such a great event," says Carol Cronin, of Jamestown, who will compete this weekend in her Snipe Spidey.

The Newport Regatta is a true community-wide effort, with local clubs offering support. Skilled race management volunteers and power boats from these clubs form the backbone of the race committees, demonstrating the collective dedication to making the regatta a success.

The Newport Regatta requires almost 100 volunteers for race management and shoreside activities. Area organizations onboard to assist with operating the Newport Regatta include the Newport Yacht Club, the New York Yacht Club, and the International Yacht & Athletic Club.

Local ties in the line-up of storied boat classes sailing this weekend include the S Class designed by American Naval Architect Nat Herreshoff of Bristol  The boats have stood the test of time as one of the oldest American one-design classes still racing today with an active fleet in Newport.

Also, five of the vaunted 12-Metre Class are racing this weekend and all have a rich local history in the America's Cup.  Courageous , was skippered to victory in 1974 by Ted Hood and in 1977 by Ted Turner.   Intrepid,  also on the roster this weekend, won the America's Cup in Newport in 1967 and 1970.   American Eagle, Nefertiti  and  Columbia  (1958 America’s Cup Winner) round out the entries in the 12-Metre Class.

"The 12 Metres racing this weekend are a nod to history in the Regatta, but they are every bit as competitive and fast as they were in their America's Cup days.  Their participation links the history of sailing in Newport with ou modern sailing community,” Read adds.

The Newport Regatta can be followed here:  https://sailnewport.org/calendar/40th-anniversary-newport-regatta/

Summer Guide: RI's big guide to the perfect beach day

Planning to hit the beach this summer in Rhode Island? We've got you covered. This year's Providence Journal Summer Guide has detailed guides on fun in the surf, sand and sun.

Whether you're looking to take advantage of newly clarified public access laws and explore some of RI's lesser-seen coastline, hunting for the perfect secret and secluded cove or hunting out the perfect public beach to develop a tan, we're shore to have you covered.

Then when it comes to beach activities: fishing , surfing , or even just enjoying that perfect beach read , we've picked prime parking spaces, key vendors and insider tips all lined up and at your finger tips. That way, your day of sun, lobster rolls and fun is sure to be a success.

Rhode Island's beaches are public. Here's a quick guide to what you can and can't do.

Rhode Islanders enjoy a right to the shore, it's enshrined in the state’s constitution.

That  beach access expanded significantly  last year with the passage of a sweeping bill to give the public even more room on the state’s sandy and rocky beaches.

If you’re visiting Rhode Island this summer, or you’re a longtime Rhode Islander wondering what you can and can’t do on the beach now, here’s your quick guide.

Rhode Island's beaches are public: Here's a quick guide to what you can and can't do.

Rhode Island Beach Guide: Everything you need to know about the best beaches in the state

For many Rhode Islanders, summer means  it's time to head to the beach . Whether you want to surf, find a secluded swimming spot, or get out for a day with the family, you'll find plenty of options along the Ocean State's expansive coastline.

The state maintains a website with the relative fullness of the beach parking lots it controls.  See the current state beach parking statuses here .

More: The votes are in, and this South County spot is selected as RI's best beach. Find out where

The Rhode Island Department of Health tracks which beaches are closed to swimming due to high bacteria counts.  See the closure list here .

On the other hand, if you're looking for Rhode Island's favorite beach − well the votes are in − and with 16 incredible Rhode Island beaches only one could be crowned the Ocean State's best beach.

In a  finals battle between two state beaches , East Matunuck prevailed over Misquamicut by a 56%-44% margin.

Rhode Island Beach Guide: Everything you need to know about the best beaches in the state

RI's secret beaches: Three under-the-radar spots to visit this summer

Now you know what you can and can't do at the beach as well as some of Rhode Island's famous spots, you're probably wondering, "Where are those secret, secluded beaches that make me feel like I'm on a private island?"

Though well-known to locals, fishermen and surfers, these “secret” beaches typically aren’t on the radar of casual day-trippers. (Please don’t tell anyone from Connecticut.) You won’t necessarily find them on Google Maps, and they’re usually marked with only an unobtrusive wooden sign.

Here are three that are worth a visit.

Swells, access, parking: Everything you need to know about surfing in Rhode Island

Secret seclusion not for you? Need a little more action, intensity and activity when visiting the sandy shore? Lucky for you Rhode Island has some of the best surfing around. Our staff writer Patrick Anderson takes his surfing seriously. He wrote this guide that includes everything you need to go out and "hang-10. "

  • What's the best day to surf?
  • Best time to surf?

NEWPORT (WJAR) -- A special guest was at the Newport Sailing Museum Thursday night. Hall of Fame sailor and TV commentator Gary Jobson gave a presentation on America's prospects in the upcoming Paris Olympics.

Jobson will call the Olympic sailing on NBC, narrating every single race from the network's studio in Connecticut.

This will be his tenth time covering the games.

"I feel quite lucky to be able to call the Olympics and promote the sport of sailing and promote our athletes," Jobson said. "One of the cool things about the Olympics is just how good everybody is when the games come."

The U.S. is sailing in nine of the 10 Olympic classes.

Rhode Islanders will be keeping a close eye on Providence's Stu McNay, who is competing in his fifth Olympic games.

"One of the best sailors in the country," Jobson said of McNay. "He's been at it for a long time. He's come close. He's at the age now with all that experience, he's not going to get too overwhelmed with the Olympic scene and opening ceremonies, and just focus on the job."

McNay is competing with Lara Dallman-Weiss in the mixed 470.

"I hope their experience in the past helps them get a medal this time around," Jobson said.

Aside from McNay, Jobson said some of the women have a strong chance to medal.

He mentioned Daniela Moroz (Formula Kite) and the team of Stephanie Roble and Maggie Shea (49erFX).

Jobson will be calling the races 12 days in a row on NBC/Peacock, and encourages everyone to tune in.

"Marseille on the south coast of France is a good place for sailing," Jobson said. "They do get good wind which is important in our game, and you'll want to cheer on the American team."
