Maxson Restaurant really came through for me this Mother's Day, and they didn't even realize how big of a deal it was. My parents recently moved to Rockford, and taking my dad, who has dementia, out to eat can be a challenge. So, I messaged them on Facebook for a reservation, going out on a limb, but they were booked solid. Even though it was booked, they offered to pack up some of their buffet for us to pick up (which I have never had anyone offer before). It was such a relief not to have to take my dad out, and they gave us tons of food AND IT WAS ALL AMAZING! Plus, they were super cool about accommodating my last-minute planning and changing my pickup time because of traffic coming from Chicago. Huge thanks to them! I'll definitely be singing their praises to anyone who'll listen, and Mom and I are definitely planning to dine in there soon. Seriously, thank you, Maxson!

Maxson's Pride of Oregon, a paddle wheel boat, is truly a hidden gem. The friendly crew described its history--built in 1989 as a replica of the Rosie O'Shea paddlewheeler. A portion of its journey from the shipyard to the Rock River was actually made overland. The interior of the main deck is appointed with attractive woodwork, and there is a bar. The upper deck is open air. Ample seating is provided. This was a lunch cruise and our group was seated and served upon our 11 AM boarding. The quality of the food (catered by Maxson) and service exceeded our expectations. We began with rolls and a generous tossed salad with Italian dressing. Our entrée choices were beef bordelaise, fried catfish, and a vegetarian plate. The fork-tender beef was cloaked in a red wine sauce and the fish, though heavy on the crust, tasted fresh and was greaseless. Our sides were fresh steamed veggies and a twice-baked potato. Chocolate cake was served for dessert. There were pitchers of lemonade and water on the table, and coffee and tea were offered. Our leisurely cruise upriver lasted two hours and ended at 1:30. Travel is limited to a 7-mile-long navigable stretch of the Rock River. Narration was provided at various points of interest. We spotted at least two bald eagles onshore. Just delightful!

Service was pretty good. View from the restaurant and outdoor seating is awesome. Burgers are "all cooked to the same temperature." - from frozen. Same as the twiced baked potato. It was fine.

Well the place is gigantic and very nice views of the river and river boat. If you just wanted views great. Food was average- not worthy of a review- I will not be returning. Food left out too long and at wrong temperatures on the salad cart - including warm soup- not healthy for long periods. I would avoid things that need to be cold or hot. The chips- obviously they let the oil sit and go bad. This must be changed. Could this be because the paddle boat is the main attraction? This place has everything going for it but the food and seemingly policies of reusing - not realizing that the moneys in return clientele not saving an extra bowl of soup or reusing salad greens. Throw everything away regularly. Simplify menu- hot and very fresh will win.

I'm reluctant to write negative reviews because my goal has never been to do harm to a business. However in this case I feel compelled to say something with the hope that ownership there is willing to make a change. First let me say that the wait person was prompt, nice, and professional. That's why there are 2 stars. I don't need to get specific, but the food was inedible. I'm no food snob and I'll eat almost anything. I never send food back and recognize the difference between food I don't like and food that I can't eat. This food was poorly stored, poorly prepared, and poorly presented. We didn't eat it nor drink the drinks they brought out. It was that bad. Again, my goal here is not to trash the place, but to hopefully generate an opportunity for them to take a step back and evaluate what they are doing. I don't want to encourage folks not to go there, but instead to provide feedback to help them right the ship. It's a cool looking place, right on the river, but they won't stay open much longer if something drastic isn't done. I wish them good luck.

Went late in the year, as the fall colors had set in. Beautiful views. Very few diners at lunch, so we were not surprised to have good service. Very friendly. The food was very decent, with a nice salad bar. Look forward to going back when we are in the area.

Took my family here for a Mother's Day brunch buffet. The view was great. Only gave us one round of rolls (no more orange rolls). Food was average at best. Very bland and dry. Dessert table looked great but everything was very dry and none of them had much flavor. Service was ok. Wasn't a big fan of them automatically adding the gratuity onto the bill. At $34/person, I expected a lot more. Not nearly as good as it used to be. Definitely will not be going back.

The Friday Fish fry is awesome and the Rock River scenery is world class. Staff was friendly and eager to serve.

Highly recommend this place. My buddies and I did a long bike ride from Rochelle to Oregon and with most places under Covid restrictions, they carried out a beautiful prime rib dinner with sides, salad and dessert. Richie, the manager was a great guy and we highly appreciated his five-star service. He delivered all of our dinners to our hotel room. Definitely will be back at this place again

Brunch buffet with the family at 1 pm. The food had definitely been sitting under a light for hours. The selection was limited ... and the chicken was so dry that it was not edible. We threw it in the river. The service was good and the view nice. They seemto be hanging on by a thread. Too bad, we really looked forward to a family get together. We were the only people there.verysad, hope they can pull it back together. Read more

Nope don?t do it. We celebrated a birthday on this boat for a dinner cruise and it was a bad experience. When we got in the ... boat there was a odor of mildew and diesel, at first the staff seemed helpful, but in the first 10 minutes there was a lady thataccused us of not paying?my in laws are hard of hearing and didn?t hear her, so she said they weren?t leaving the dock until wepaid?we informed our in-laws and they showed her the paid ticket, to which she said oh my mistake?only after she made ascene. We felt rushed to eat?dinner to dessert was just under 30 minutes and we were in a 2 hour cruise so I?m not sure whatthe rush was. The food was not good?ok but not a good meal. One of the manager basically yelled at my nieces and nephewsbecause he was trying to figure out who had chicken fingers. (Next time just ask a parent nicely because it?s most likely thekids). They also didn?t have enough life jackets in board?which is a little concerning, they assured us they don?t have tosince the river isn?t that deep, but that just didn?t sit well with us. Overall just a negative experience that I would notrecommend to anyone that wants to enjoy a nice relaxing meal on the river. Read more

Nice setting on the river, beautiful scenery. The food was ok, but unfortunately they felt understaffed for their Easter brunch. ... Either they overbooked, or estimated amount of time spent their too short for previous bookings. Other than that, it was prettydecent. Staff was nice. Read more

Just had Easter buffet and was delicious. Had great food with lots of choices. Roast beef was so tender, chicken with cheese on ... delicious, so many choices for potatoes and so many different desserts. How can you decide which one or two to have. Servicewas friendly and great. They also gave our two little granddaughters an Easter bag. Thank you we all enjoyed! Read more

Maxson Restaurant menu

With owner’s retirement, Maxson’s future unclear

With Chief Blackhawk overlooking the Rock River, passengers board the Pride of Oregon on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013, for the luncheon cruise.

OREGON — Just seven months after Rich Wiesner bought the Maxson Manor on the banks of the Rock River in Oregon, the restaurant went up in flames.

The blaze started in the basement of the turn-of-the-century mansion on March 27, 1993, just hours before a wedding reception was to be held there. Flames spread through the building and destroyed it.

“Great luck, huh?” Wiesner said this week, recalling his tenure with the Ogle County business. “I thought I was wiped out.”

Instead, Wiesner invested nearly $750,000 into building a new 6,000-square-foot restaurant on Illinois 2 on the north edge of Oregon. He’s run the Maxson Restaurant and Riverboat since it reopened in September 1994.

But now Wiesner, 66, is retiring. He oversaw his last cruise on the riverboat Sunday and will close up the restaurant for the final time after dinner Thursday. The future of the Maxson Restaurant and Riverboat is unclear, but Wiesner has no doubts.

“It’ll sell,” he said this week. “It’s just a special spot. People were here before me, and they’ll be here after me.”

There’s been a restaurant operating at the site since 1952. Wiesner’s had the business on the market for about a year with no bites. But in the past few weeks he’s seen steady interest, from one potential buyer in particular.

Tiffany Cravatta, owner of the neighboring Blackhawk Steak Pit restaurant and a real estate broker, shares Wiesner’s optimism about the future of the Maxson Restaurant.

“It’s a great place, a beautiful building,” she said. “It’ll sell fairly quickly.”

The restaurant’s hook, Wiesner said, is the view. When he rebuilt, he put in tiered seating in the dining room, so there’s no bad seat in the house. Patrons this time of year can enjoy panoramic views of the autumn leaves through picture windows that line the building alongside the river.

Over the years, the site has hosted countless weddings, retirement parties and family reunions on the expansive deck outside the restaurant. And busloads of visitors took trips on the riverboat docked at the site.

“We’re devastated,” said Jethny Edmonson, manager at the Paddle Wheel Inn next door to the Maxson Restaurant.

The two entities have worked hand-in-hand since the Paddle Wheel Inn opened in the mid-1990s. But since the news of Maxson’s closing came out, Edmonson said all of the upcoming wedding traffic booked at the hotel is cancelled.

“The future of our business is up in the air. We don’t know how we can be in business without (Maxson),” she said.

Edmonson said ripples from the restaurant closing will be felt throughout the Oregon community, since visitors to Maxson usually visited other local establishments, too.

“Route 2 was closed for the past two years with the (road) expansion and we lost a lot of driving traffic from that,” Edmonson said. “Things were supposed to be picking up for us.”

“In light of the news, the owners just recently put the Paddle Wheel Inn up for sale, too. ... Anybody interested could also buy it and run the pair as one unit.”

Wiesner got his start at Maxson as captain of the Pride of Oregon riverboat. He ran the boat for three years and then bought the business when the former owner passed away.

Since he took over the business, Wiesner estimates he’s had just one vacation away. He feels compelled to be on site to ensure every special event held there runs smoothly.

“Now my kids are screaming at me to retire,” he said, referring to his three sons who all live close by. “I promised the kids a year ago ... and I’m going to stick to my word.”

Cravatta said she’s talked to many customers who are sad to see the Maxson closing and wonder why.

“I think it’s just a time thing,” she said. “He’s a great guy. And he’s worked very hard there and made it a great place. He deserves to retire and enjoy his time.”
