Idaho State reform school’s dark history investigated by Zak Bagans and Ghost Adventures crew

On the Season 17 premiere of Ghost Adventures, Zak Bagans and his crew are headed to Idaho to investigate the supernatural comings and goings at the St. Anthony Girls Reformatory. The facility was built by the state back in 1921 and has 60 years of haunted history.

The St. Anthony Girls Reformatory was purchased back in 2013 by Doug and Marilyn Olsen, a couple from Southern California who wanted to raise their children in rural Idaho and thought that building would make the perfect home. They knew nothing about the reformatory’s chilling history and the 20 or so bodies that are buried on the property.

That didn’t sway the family, who got to work making the large property livable by upgrading the interior and even making space for rooms that are rented out through Airbnb.

They even converted the old medical clinic located in the reformatory into a “haunted hospital” at Halloween in order to raise money. It’s said that the attraction is the real deal and even has a ghost child that sometimes shows up and helps spook the guests.

Despite all of that, the family still lives in the house and continues to learn of the property’s shocking history.

Ghost Adventures became interested after a neighbor asked Marilyn Olsen if she could check out the property and shared information about it with her ghost hunting group. That’s when Zak Bagans and his crew got involved, showing up to St. Anthony’s Girls Reformatory with their equipment to see what kind of supernatural presence they could detect.

There should be plenty of supernatural activity based on the numerous stories about the reformatory and the other buildings on the grounds. In fact, the buildings stopped operating in the 1980s and there are people still alive who were students and patients who were housed there.

Over the years, the property is said to have been used for different things besides the reformatory. In fact, there are even stories that part of the property was used to house a group of boys who attended a reform school down the street.

While the St. Anthony’s Girls Reformatory is said to be haunted by many who have visited, there are also reports that the ghosts are of the “helpful” variety, which may be the reason families have been able to live there peacefully.

Ghost Adventures airs on Saturdays at 9/8c on the Travel channel.

Made in Idaho: Idaho's Haunted Hospital

ghost adventures st anthony idaho

ST ANTHONY, Idaho — The former Idaho State Industrial School in St. Anthony is home to "Idaho's Haunted Hospital" . And the location has quite a bit of notoriety, even being featured in an episode of the popular paranormal activity TV show ' Ghost Adventures '.

Built in the 1920s, the site was home to the Girl's Reform School, Gym, and Hospital. The facility is where wayward youth were sentenced to serve time while learning such things as home economics, milking cows, and growing crops.

The school and surrounding grounds are also said to be host to some of its prior residents, who are no longer alive, yet not quite interested in leaving.

ghost adventures st anthony idaho

Now made available as a seasonal Halloween attraction, the facility and land is owned and operated by the Olsen Family, and themed after the experiences of the girls who once stayed there.

One apparition seen there is a girl, possibly Hope Chacon, who died on March 17, 1941. The state issued certificate of death lists her cause of death as 'Suicide by Hanging'. However, relatives of the girl have always believed there were more mysterious circumstances surrounding her demise, and most likely that it wasn't a suicide at all.

The Olsen family says there are so many reported sightings of a mysterious "Ghost Girl" roaming inside the old hospital that they have actually put a disclaimer on their job application saying the hired performers for the Halloween attraction are not allowed to quit should they encounter the "Ghost Girl" while working.

However, that disclaimer hasn't prevented some performers from walking away from the Haunted Hospital. In fact, Doug Olsen said many of the actors quit on the season's opening night after experiencing paranormal encounters they simply cannot explain.

The attraction is split into two separate events: the Haunted Hospital and the Haunted Walking Tour.

The walking tour features the third floor of the Girls Dormitory. The Olsen family says the area was sealed off sometime in the 1950s after several Matrons who lived there reported, and strongly believed, the upper floor was haunted.

When asked why the family decided to open the attraction in these historic buildings, Olsen tells us he had so many people trespassing on his property that they decided they could make some money, as well as teach people the history of the location at the same time.

And when asked if the location is really haunted, Olsen says, "Of course it is! But your house is haunted too! It's not like they are just hanging out at my house!"

Staircase to the third floor... previously sealed to keep spirits contained

During the October Spooky season, visitors can enter the facility for the nominal cost of $10 per person on weekends, $8 on weekdays, with house tours costing an additional $5. As for the rest of the year, house tours are by appointment only.

Five Times Idaho Was Featured on Ghost Adventures

Okay, okay, I admit it. I'm a sucker for a good ghost story. I'm not sure why because if I watch those kinds of shows and movies at night, there's no way I'm falling asleep, and if I do, I'm definitely having nightmares.

Maybe I just love the adrenaline rush! Whatever the case, one of my favorite TV shows in the genre is Ghost Adventures. Zak Bagans and friends travel worldwide and stop at some of America's best ghost stories to investigate. There have been at least five such investigations in Idaho.

Old Idaho Penitentiary

Season one's finale was about the Old Idaho Penitentiary . Using all kinds of different techniques, the crew caught the image of a ghost on camera in the gallows.

Lava Hot Springs

Lava Hot Springs Inn in Lava Hot Springs , Idaho, was the subject of an investigation on the season finale of season 11. They came across more manifestations in this episode than any previous episode.

Albion Normal School

In season 15, the Ghost Adventure Cres showed up at Albion Normal School in Albion. The home of one of the state's most famous haunted houses during the Halloween season is actually haunted. The actors hired for the event are often possessed and hurt by real ghosts having their own fun. This episode featured some very playful and sinister spirits in the entire series.

Idaho Reform School

In season 17, the Ghost Adventurers came back to Idaho. This time to visit the Idaho Reform School in St. Anthony. Here they came into contact with several lingering spirits of children who died here but never left.

Idaho Tuberculosis Hospital

Finally, in season 19, the Gem State was once again the subject of a paranormal investigation for Zak and Company. This time the crew came to the Idaho State Tuberculosis Hospital  in Gooding. You can imagine how this went—a crew member even starter suffering symptoms of the terrible disease.

Location History

Constructed in the early 1900s, the Idaho State Reform School and Infirmary (also called St. Anthony Girls Reformatory, and Idaho State Industrial School), was built by the state to house many children, including runaways, truants and orphans during the 60 years it was in operation.

During that time, it is rumored that many of the children suffered abuse and neglect at the hands of those in charge and that several accidents occurred resulting in the deaths of too many fragile lives. A small cemetery on the grounds of the reformatory holds the crumbling gravestones of at least 20 young people who met their demise while residing at the school.

The facility was decommissioned in the 1980s and two buildings remain standing today: the girls’ dormitory and the infirmary or medical building, referred to by the current owners as the “Haunted Hospital”.

While there seem to be few actual records still in existence about the conditions at the school or the events that took place inside, there is one newspaper report of a 14-year-old girl named Hope who committed suicide here in 1941.

Recently investigated by the Ghost Adventures team, St. Anthony Girls’ Reformatory and Infirmary appear to be places of frequent and varied paranormal activity. Is the spirit of Hope still lingering, just waiting to tell her story? Or perhaps one of the other children has secrets to share. There’s only one way to find out…

The Paranormal

The Reformatory (also known as the Idaho Industrial Training School, and the Idaho State Reform School) was built in the early 1900s and was in operation for 60 years until it closed in the 1980s. Many troubled children were sent here – and several never left. Their restless souls may still be trying to reach out and tell us of the conditions they encountered.

A wide variety of paranormal activity has been reported throughout both the old dormitory and the medical building, including interactions with “ghost children” who play and roam the floors and grounds of the former reformatory complex. Apparitions of children and a doctor have been seen by locals in the infirmary – particularly in the surgical room. Others have said they hear the cries of a little girl. Maybe you’ll catch the disembodied voice of someone trying to share their story or feel a tug on your shirt from a ghost child trying to get your attention.

Who will you encounter during your visit? One of the many young people who were buried in the small cemetery located on the reformatory grounds? Maybe a doctor who treated the children for a variety of illnesses and accidents? Or, perhaps you’ll run into young Hope, a 14-year-old girl residing at the school who, according to a newspaper article, committed suicide in 1941 when she “removed a cord belt from her dress, stood on chair next to the door, tied the belt around her neck and hooked one end through the transom, then stepped off the chair.”

Rumored to be a place of neglect, abuse and despair for some of its residents, there is sure to be plenty of energy held within these walls. Join us and see what secrets you can reveal when you reach out to communicate with the lost souls of St. Anthony Girls’ Reformatory… if you dare!

Ghost Adventures: Idaho State Tuberculosis Hospital

Zak and the crew investigate a former tuberculosis hospital in Gooding, Idaho, that's been converted into an inn. The owners and their staff have been terrorized by whispering voices, ghostly children and the spirit of an angry old man.

Gooding University Inn

Gooding University Inn

This building is all that’s left of the Idaho State Tuberculosis Hospital in the town of Gooding. Today, it’s an inn that’s haunted by countless spirits.

Idaho State Tuberculosis Hospital

We can't help but think about how a person might feel as they were getting wheeled into this hospital, knowing they may be leaving in a body bag. Those emotions sink into every building on this campus and on these grounds.

Filming Begins

In 1941, the property was given to the state of Idaho for the development of a Tuberculosis hospital. Six years later, the Idaho State Tuberculosis Hospital opened and Tenney Hall became a dormitory for nurses. Between 1937 and 1947, tuberculosis claimed the lives of over 500,000 people in the United States alone. Many people died while in the care of this hospital.

Invisible Killer

Locals hated the hospital being here in Gooding. They believed it was dangerous to bring all of these sick people to town. During a plague, society loses its mind. You wonder if an invisible killer is waiting for you around the next corner.

The Basement

The basement inside the Gooding University Inn is where some of the more hostile negative entities seem to reside.

Powerful Forces

Hotel guests and visitors who have wandered down here basement have been attacked by unseen forces. One witness said it felt like a doctor and patient walked right through him.

Use Caution

Witnesses say the attic and the basement have the darkest energy in the building. People have been pushed and poked down here and investigators need to use extreme caution while present.

Svetlana Brown

Svetlana Brown is the owner of the Gooding University Inn. She and her husband bought the building six years ago. They said they were told the building was haunted when they moved in. With over a century of history and countless people coming and going through here, this investigation is going to be complicated.

Gloria Pawson

Gloria Pawson has worked as a housekeeper at the Gooding University Inn for five years.

Angry Spirit

This room is where Gloria had a terrifying experience when she saw the spirit of an angry man roaming around.

The attic is where some of the darker energy resides. The energy is so dark, in fact, that the current owner refuses to go up here anymore.

Witnesses Speak Out

Nick Riggs along with his brother, Carson Reeder, investigated the building about a year and a half ago. It was near the end of the night when he and his brother were talking and something poked Carson three times in the back, as if trying to get him to move out of the way. Carson’s back was near a door, so it couldn’t have been anyone else down there with them.

Never Alone

The family that lives here isn’t alone. They know they bought a building surrounded by death. Some of their staff have seen apparitions, and they’re afraid of an angry male presence lurking in some of the guest rooms.

Lockdown Time

Night falls as the crew prepares for their lockdown inside the inn.

New Investigation

Don’t miss the all-new investigation this Saturday at 9|8c.
