Registration for 2024 Summer Sail Camp is open!

We look forward to another great summer of sailing.  With many of our favorite instructors returning and a bunch of newly implemented ideas that make learning to sail at all levels more fun.  Back for 2024 is the Second Week class for our youngest sailors, we've added a 4 day cruise to Catalina Island providing more time to explore remote parts of the island and a redefinition of Advanced sailing adventures.  Why mess with a good thing you ask?  We constantly push ourselves to make sailing at every level an adventure by re-examining how we run all of our classes and the results are ,more fun and faster progression.  Click on our Summer Sail Camp tab, pick your week(s) of fun and make your reservations.  We are looking forward to another epic summer of sailing!

2020 Sail Camp is sold out

Demand for Sail Camp has been extremely strong and most sessions are already closed to registration due to the size of the waitlists.  Sessions that are open to register have waitlists short enough that there is a small possibility that a new registrant could be accepted off the waitlist.  We are looking at ways to provide additional alternatives to help get more folks on the water and will announce them when we have staff confirmed to accommdate addition sessions or offerings.

Sail Camp is open and Reopening Protocol is posted!

Sail Camp starts June 15 and we are happy to be able to provide a safe, healthy and fun way for youth sailors to get out of the house and get some fresh air.  Naturally, Sail Camp this year will be unlike any we've held before.  We have a stringent protocol to follow to reduce the chance of infection and a link to our required protocaol posting is below.

SMWYC Sail Camp Reopening Protocol

Preliminary Reopening Plan is available

Download our Preliminary Reopening Plan

Last two weeks of Sail Camp may be sold out but we still have lots to offer!

Unfortunately, the last two weeks are sold out with waiting lists so we have removed those options from the registartion system.  We've had a unprecedented rush to sign up for the last two weeks.  Our regular Thursday After School Sailing restarts Aug. 22 and our Saturday Open Sailing restarts Aug. 24.  Monthly Learn to Sail packages begin Sept. 7.  We have the flexibility to add days if you like or create special classes for groups.  Visit of Programs page or email us for more information.

I had my 50th Birthday Party in there and rented the dining room and their Patio area. Not only they were tremendously helpful with the set up and Bartender (great) but offered the bar area as well for my event. They are the only club that offers boats for the members to take out but also put the most sailboat races in the Sta Monica Area. For the cheapest price of a full club, the value is tremendous and I would recommend using it for parties and specially weddings, great sunset Views,(check their Facebook page)

Love the Windjammer's! The minute I walked in to go to my friends bday celebration, I felt like I was on a vacation and all my LA cares vanished. You have to check this club out. It's old school and welcoming and tons of fun!! Great place to host an event and throw a party. Let's go sailing :)

SMWYC needs a major overhaul. The club is lucky enough to have a gorgeous location in MDR, however, its decor has not been updated since 1970 and its 'all volunteer staff' does not return phone calls or emails in a timely manner... or at all. I joined SMWJ, was accepted, but was never notified of this acceptance... so I was paying for the 'luxury' of being a member of the club but not receiving any of the benefits. When I was finally notified, I had missed a full month of membership activities. Additionally, I explained that the main reason I was joining was for indoor paddleboard storage and was assured that this would be built by the time I was accepted; it was never built... thus I had no reason for membership as I do not sail and was not interested in any of the social activities. My friendly complaints fell on deaf ears; I was told that it was an all-volunteer organization so basically there was no time to answer me or build the racks. In my opinion, any members-only organization should SERVE and ACT in its members' best interest, volunteer or not... and never, ever make lame excuses.

I helped ring in a dear friend's birthday party at the club and had a great experience. Parking is easy, the staff is friendly and the drinks are strong. The view cannot be beat!

Behold SMYC, a Ritzy Yacht-Inspired Seafood Destination in Santa Monica

Eater has learned that Westside restaurant Santa Monica Yacht Club has officially closed. The two-year-old eatery was launched in 2015 by chef Andrew Kirschner, but quietly pegged last night as their final evening of dinner service.

Reached for comment, Kirschner passes along the following note:

“Being from Santa Monica, having the opportunity to open not just one, but two restaurants was awesome. But this city is notoriously tough. With everything going on in the industry, and the nature of the industry itself, I’ve decided to focus solely on Tar & Roses and to close SMYC. I’ve got a lot going on these days to keep me busy outside of the restaurants, and it’s time to reprioritize. It was a great run, and I’m happy to still be serving folks at Tar & Roses.”

Staff is reportedly being notified now, and guests with upcoming reservations are being accommodated at Tar & Roses instead.

The shutter of SMYC shows, despite its overall gains, just how volatile the Los Angeles restaurant market continues to be. Add in high rents in visible areas like Santa Monica, plus the usual staffing and sourcing issues that come with any restaurant, and it’s a recipe for a tough market, though many places — including Tar & Roses nearby, and Michael’s further on — continue to thrive.

California Yacht Club Says New Clubhouse Will Take Several Years to Build, Activities Continue After Devastating Fire

A Temporary Pavilion Will Soon Serve in the Interim

By Zach Armstrong

The California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey lost nearly everything in December. One night, its two-story clubhouse was consumed by a seaside fire that incinerated an impressive collection of historical artifacts, boating trophies and other memorabilia. But the nautical community’s resilience proved itself. Various events and programs, including pickleball and a recent Super Bowl watch party, have continued on the club’s six-acre property while its members’ yachts still sit in the adjacent docks.

By June, Senior Vice President John Myers says the club hopes to give members a closer sense of normalcy with an elevated pavilion-style facility featuring a full-bar, restaurant, bathrooms and event space. This structure will serve in the interim while the club works out development plans for a new official clubhouse. Nothing short of a cumbersome process is anticipated. Once insurance provides an estimate on losses, the club can determine a design strategy while working with L.A. County and the California Coastal Commission for approvals.

An approximate timeline is hard to determine, said Myers, but will likely take several years.

The old clubhouse held a decades’ worth display of cherished relics that showed the club’s rich history. Notable items that perished in the December fire include the King of Spain Trophy which was acquired from King Alfonso XIII in 1929 and photographs of past club leaders. An internal team is salvaging items that survived the blaze, such as the California Cup, which will likely appear in the new HQ.

Fellow yacht clubs have shown strong comradery, said Myers. Many of them offered support to CYC after the winter fire; possibly leading to donations of memorabilia once official development plans for a new clubhouse are in motion. Having a membership of international travelers also proved to be a useful perk. As they travel to other clubs, they can use their connections to ask for gifts. Myers also said the club is open to starting “new traditions.”

While CYC lost some of its members, Myers says its community largely hasn’t gone anywhere and remains excited for future events. An upcoming Easter brunch, women’s paddle tennis and yoga are just some of what CYC members will be enjoying. Sailboat racing has also reconvened with the Sunset Series starting April 17 and running through Sept. 4.
