Editors' Review

If you know how to use a CD player, you will be a master at using GhostMouse, a tiny program that lets you record and play back a series of mouse movements, including right clicks and drag-and-drop actions. You may, however, ask yourself when or where you could put your recorded clicks to work.

Using GhostMouse's compact, three-button interface, you can record a script to replay a set of actions. Unlike other programs designed to record and replicate user actions, this one is limited to mouse-related tasks. More robust programs will handle typed text and other keyboard actions. Still, the program worked as promised and even had a few settings and other features. You could, for example, call the GhostMouse app from the command line or upon startup and run a saved script. Using one of the two available user options, you could then choose to close GhostMouse after playback (the other setting governs playback speed). One potentially useful feature is the ability to click Play during a recording session, thereby enabling you to create an endless loop of your mouse clicks. To exit the loop, users just have to deliver a Pause command (Ctrl+Alt.), then exit the application.

The original purpose of GhostMouse is a mystery. One downloader describes using it to create a continuous click stream to convince a Web server that a real user is viewing the site. GhostMouse may also fill an esoteric need of remote system administrators. In any case, it seems that an application that records both mouse clicks and keyboard strokes would be more likely to satisfy whatever automation needs you have. If, however, you see a need for what GhostMouse offers, you won't have to pay a thing to use it.

Generate realistic, human-like mouse movement data between coordinates or navigate between elements with puppeteer like the definitely-not-robot you are.

Oh yeah? Could a robot do this?

or with npm

Generating movement data between 2 coordinates.

Usage with puppeteer:

Puppeteer-specific behavior

  • cursor.move() will automatically overshoot or slightly miss and re-adjust for elements that are too far away from the cursor's starting point.
  • When moving over objects, a random coordinate that's within the element will be selected instead of hovering over the exact center of the element.
  • The speed of the mouse will take the distance and the size of the element you're clicking on into account.

How does it work

Bezier curves do almost all the work here. They let us create an infinite amount of curves between any 2 points we want and they look quite human-like. (At least moreso than alternatives like perlin or simplex noise)

ghost mouse 1.0

The magic comes from being able to set multiple points for the curve to go through. This is done by picking 2 coordinates randomly in a limited area above and under the curve.

ghost mouse 1.0

However, we don't want wonky looking cubic curves when using this method because nobody really moves their mouse that way, so only one side of the line is picked when generating random points.

Those jobs you’re applying to? They might not be real.

Pretty much everyone knows what it feels like to hunt for a job: You revamp your resume, send out a zillion applications — and you wait.

“If you’re unemployed in a down market it is stressful and every day feels like a month, every month feels like a year,” said Dan Kaplan, a senior partner at Korn Ferry, an HR consulting firm.

Job seekers rarely know what’s happening on the other side of the application. And in some cases, what’s happening is absolutely nothing. The position doesn’t even exist. It’s called a ghost job. And about half of companies list jobs they don’t necessarily intend to fill because they’re “always open to new people,” according to a survey from Clarify Capital . Kaplan said this tactic isn’t new.

“In all practical sense, it’s existed for many years and it means a number of different things,” he said.

Ghost jobs can be an innocent oversight: A recruiter puts up open positions and gets laid off or forgets to take them down once they’re filled. But sometimes employers post ghost jobs on purpose so that to investors it looks like the company is growing, and to overworked and frustrated employees it looks like help is on the way.

But the most common type of ghost job is talent hoarding.

“You keep postings out there. You collect a large pool of resumes. You may, in fact, make contact with candidates and interview them, just so you have a large pool of talent,” said Kaplan. “But you don’t plan on actually filling the job anytime soon or hiring.”

Kaplan said this happens in a lot of industries, especially tech. And it might be more common now because businesses are anxious. They laid off workers at the beginning of the pandemic, then had a hard time hiring them back when they needed them. They laid people off again when wages and interest rates rose. Now, they’re waiting for the economy to give them the green light to grow again.

“It gives you a pool that you can very quickly ramp back up,” said Kaplan.

Ghost jobs might just be a temporary symptom of an uncertain economy. But Erica Groshen, an economist at Cornell University and former commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, said the way companies hire and candidates job hunt is changing.

“We’re moving to a new equilibrium where everybody just applies to more jobs than they used to,” she said.

With online job boards, it’s easier than ever to throw your hat in the ring. Meanwhile, companies are taking longer to screen applicants.

“Now it’s worth it for the employers to hold the jobs open longer, look through more resumes, because they have a hope that they’re actually going to find a worker who’s better suited,” she said.

In 2023, the average number of days it took companies to hire hit an all-time high of 44 days, with many jobs open for three months or more.

“I wish I could say ‘here are the top three red flags to look for as a job seeker in these ads to see if they’re real or not real,'” said Vicki Salemi, a career expert at the jobs site Monster. “There aren’t any telltale signs.”

Once upon a time, a posting that’s been open for a while might be a red flag. Now, Salemi encourages job seekers to apply anyway. If you do get an interview, ask about the company’s hiring timeline.

“And do your due diligence throughout the interview process,” said Salemi. “If you discover that what they say they’re now backtracking, that is a sign of their values and their culture and you have to ask yourself, “Is this an organization I’d want to be part of?'”

That is, if you don’t get ghosted first.

ghost mouse 1.0

Posted by Federico Tiraboschi on November 1, 2019

Ghost 1.0 is the second Metroidvania made by Spanish developer Franfistro (Francisco Téllez de Meneses), after sleeper hit UnEpic . Unlike that one, it is not based on pen-and-paper RPGs and fantasy properties, instead on popular cyberpunk stories like Ghost in the Shell.

Many elements are common to both games though, such as allocating experience points to unlock buffs/abilities or environmental changes, sprawling color-coded maps, an expansive inventory, a similar graphic style, keyboard+mouse controls, absurdly difficult post-game missions and mini-games, tons of geeky references and a wacky sense of humor. The customization of the player’s stats is not as thorough or complex as it was in UnEpic , however Ghost 1.0 is more interested in telling a story, as this time there are several cut-scenes rendered in an anime style (another homage to 80s and 90s cyberpunk, heavily influenced by Japan’s culture) that unfold the plot. It is about Ghost, a sentient AI (or so it seems) that can possess with its “virtual ghost” every robot from lowly workers to war machines, that gets employed by two nerdy hackers to investigate the Nakamura space station mass-producing the super-advanced Naka androids.

The story is not particularly original, mostly paying homage to everything sci-fi from Robocop to StarCraft and Blade Runner, still with a couple nice twists here and there; more important is the focus on the “possessing” mechanic which is used to fight (Ghost has no offensive abilities of her own), to get around stealthily and to solve puzzles (mainly in the form of taking control of whoever operates the traps or making other robots fall into said traps, though there’s an interesting puzzle boss at one point). It remains consistently fun and engaging, up to a very long and tedious infiltration and rescue mission near the end, that can luckily be skipped.  For the rest, there are the usual pieces of keycards to collect for opening the various areas of the Nakamura, from the greenhouse to the waste disposal unit.

About the combat: the space station is full of “alarm zones” that get locked and turn into arenas where you have to survive until the alarm fades, in order to gain energy cubes, the game’s credits that can be spent in the shops. Dying makes you lose cubes and equipped weapons, however there are several 3D printers throughout the station that, by printing another chassis for Ghost, act as save points and teleporters: an interesting way to combine the game’s lore with gameplay necessities.

Ghost 1.0 is relatively long (about 20 hours) and it still provides a harder New Game+ in order to unlock even more buffs and power-ups. On top of that, Franfistro also made the prequel game Mini Ghost , a sort of condensed version with MSX-inspired graphics that are customizable, still as engaging as the main one even without plot and cinematics. Another very fine work from the Spanish developer, that for whatever reason didn’t get the same acclaim and recognition as UnEpic .

Announcing Ghost 1.0

Announcing Ghost 1.0

About four years ago we launched Ghost on Kickstarter as a tiny little prototype of an idea to create the web's next great open source blogging platform.

In the early days we really just focused on just making everything work. Ghost was one of the very first open source Node.js applications, and it certainly came with a steep learning curve. Our first release was Ghost 0.3 in September 2013, and since then there have been a total of 99 releases, all the way up to Ghost 0.11.9.

In that time we've watched as the Ghost ecosystem has grown and flourished. From some of the web's best loved startups like Square and Tinder , to some of the world's most important organisations like Elon Musk's OpenAI and Mozilla . Ghost even made a very brief appearance in this season of HBO's Silicon Valley .

Today marks our 100th release of Ghost and, fittingly, it's Ghost 1.0.0

This release contains over 2,600 commits of features, refactors, improvements, and fixes to make the entire codebase more robust and more reliable all-round.

A new editor

The headline feature of Ghost 1.0 is a brand new editor, and it's one that we're incredibly excited about, because we think it paves the way toward one of the most powerful publishing experiences on the web.

Ghost has always been known and praised for its simple, yet powerful Markdown editor, which allows for a great writing experience alongside easy document formatting.

Our new editor offers a tremendous upgrade to that experience, with a cleaner design, a new toolbar, support for Markdown tables, CommonMark, Github-flavoured Markdown and multiple view options depending on whether you prefer a focused single column or a side-by-side preview.

ghost mouse 1.0

While this is already a significant upgrade over the previous writing experience, there's a whole lot more going on behind the scenes.

The truth is that Ghost 1.0 doesn't just have one new editor. It has two.

Let me explain:

Improving Ghost's Markdown editor has always been high on our list of priorities, but for a long time we've wanted to do more. Modern publications aren't just text based, they're comprised of diverse, dynamic elements from photographs to videos, detailed charts and rich embeds. We wanted to build something entirely new which would support all of those use-cases, and be extensible for new types of content in the future.

New-age WYSIWYG editors are a dime-a-dozen these days. Everyone and their dog seems to have a fancy document editor, but all of them suffer from the same fundamental problem: A fragile (or non-existent) underlying document storage model, which means that no matter how good they look, they fall apart pretty quickly.

Back in 2015 we started talking to Matt and Cory from the Ember.js core team, who had started building a portable JSON-based document storage format called MobileDoc as a part of a long term project for - one of the web's most successful modern publishers. MobileDoc is unique as an open standard which can store dynamic nested blocks of content in a sane manner, and translate their output into a variety of formats.

For almost two years we've been building a powerful block-based editor on top of MobileDoc - which is included in Ghost 1.0 for the first time. We're calling it Koenig .

The secret is that the upgraded Markdown editor is just a content block within the new Koenig editor:

Ghost 1.0 and its upgraded Markdown editor is the first step toward a much more powerful writing experience. Over the rest of the year we'll be adding support for more content types, and making them extensible so developers can create their own.

Here's a very simple, early demo of where we're going next with the Koenig editor later this year:

But wait there's more!

A refreshed UI

We've given Ghost admin a fresh lick of paint, tidied up the settings area, re-jigged buttons, a better publishing workflow, and many other small visual improvements.

Oh, and you can also filter the content screen now by post state, tag and author - so it's way easier to sort through large archives of content.

ghost mouse 1.0

A new default theme design

Casper, our default theme, has now reached its 2.0 milestone and has a shiny new look to celebrate the occasion. This new layout was designed to accommodate all the new Ghost features we've released over the last few years, and provide a more flexible/customisable base for most publications.

ghost mouse 1.0

Night shift mode

New in beta, a night shift mode to reverse the colours of Ghost admin for a gentler experience on the eyes when working in dim lighting. (Or just feeling like you're writing code)

ghost mouse 1.0

Publication icons

As well as a publication logo Ghost now also supports publication icons; handy for a smaller square logo to be used with theme UI and as a site favicon.

ghost mouse 1.0

A whole lot more

There are huge number of changes and improvements to enjoy.

  • A brand new importer which works a lot better than the old importer.
  • Google AMP is now optional rather than always-on.
  • Custom redirects can now be set via a config file.
  • Users can be suspended if required.
  • Collision detection, so if two people are editing a post at the same time they won't override each other. That was, um. Not ideal.
  • A new tour feature for new Ghost users to find their way around.

ghost mouse 1.0

There are also a huge number of changes for developers in Ghost 1.0, which we've covered over on the developer blog . There are important breaking changes to the theme API.

How to upgrade to Ghost 1.0

This is our first major release which breaks backwards compatibility, so the upgrade process is more involved than usual.

If you don't have a Ghost site: Try it out for free with our 14 day trial on Ghost(Pro) . All new sites automatically run on Ghost 1.0.

If you have an existing Ghost(Pro) site: The upgrade process will be mostly automated for you, with a couple of steps. We're upgrading people in batches over the coming weeks and once your account is ready to be migrated, you'll see an "Upgrade to Ghost 1.0" button when you log into, with instructions for what to do next.

ghost mouse 1.0

If you self-host Ghost: You will need to set up a new Ghost 1.0 install, and export/import your content over. We've put together a full migration guide which should help.

Because the upgrade process is more complex this time around, we've marked Ghost 0.11 as a Long Term Support (LTS) release. We will continue to provide maintenance and security updates for Ghost 0.11 for the next 6 months.

What's coming next

Ghost 1.0 was an incredibly long and complex release cycle. It took us almost a full year, and things have been pretty quiet around here since then. We learned a lot from it, but we're planning on going back to smaller and much more frequent (SemVer) releases from here on in.

Also, hello from Dubai! We've got the whole Ghost team here finalising this release and working hard to make sure it's a good one :) We're going to record a little Ghost 1.0 Release podcast tomorrow, so let us know in the comments if you have any questions - and we'll discuss them IRL!

In the mean time, could we ask for your help to share the news? Here's a pre-written status to make it extra simple:

  • No easy routes here, sadly.
  • Stay right behind the crates to avoid plasma shots. If you will be far from them, droid's shots will get you instead of a crate.

ghost mouse 1.0

  • With two claw droids and a plasma one do not kill the big droid because you then won't kill the claw droids and after some time you'll get a droid capsule with another plasma droid.
  • With slow poison droids use Deflector one or two times for each, actually one shot is enough, but it is too long.
  • With big poison droids use Deflector 4-5 times (yeah, they are pretty tough).
  • After you get 20 DNA the easiest part is completed. Actually only two battles will be quite hard.
  • With mushroom droids use Deflector two or three times, one is not enough at all.

ghost mouse 1.0

  • I prefer to use the right path, it has a much easier enemies (except the bees). But the left one lets you get the secret gun which allows you to pass through enemies alot easier.
  • If you go to the right path, then you'll get about 500 cubes after collecting 3/12 upgrades.
  • 1000-1200 cubes at 6/12 upgrades and cleared right and down paths (And may be one used medkit).
  • After right path go to the left. You'll get about 2400-2600 Cubes at 9/12 and cleared 10 alarm level (and another used medkit). Now you need a secret gun and to complete 12 alarm level, get other 400-600 cubes (which is easy for now) and one or two medkits left. The main difficulty of the 12 alarm level is an empty ammo, so make a point to kill some flowers and get the energy cells.
  • You'll get about 3100-3300 cubes after completing the 12 alarm level ( 11/12 upgrades) and 1-2 used medkits. So that's all. Go get the last upgrade and kill some more bees.
