Royal Danish Yacht Club

The Royal Danish Yacht club - or Kongelig Dansk Yachtklub as it is called in Danish - was founded in 1866.

The yacht club is situated in Hellerup and has an impressive club house. It was done by architect Thomas Scheel, and was opened in 2007. The Royal Danish Yacht Club is part of bigger renovation project in Hellerup, with the aim to create a modern and attractive marina in Hellerup. The yacht club also offer a restaurant - Club Royal – which is open for everybody.

Til den ugentlig træning vil vores dygtige trænere, undervise og vejlede vores unge sejlere, så de kan opnå deres mål og arbejde frem mod deres egne drømme.

Det er vigtig for KDY at skabe et miljø hvor der er plads til alle niveauer og hvor der gøres en særlig indsats for at skabe et trygt og socialt netværk.

The Royal Danish Yacht Club (RDYC) was founded on 3 July 1866 after a regatta in Nyborg (Funen), and was originally named the Danish Association for Pleasure Sailing (Dansk Forening for Lystsejlads). Ever since then, the Club has worked to promote sailing in Denmark and to support its members in their favourite sport.

The Royal Danish Yacht Club is home to the Danish Association of Yachters, founded in 1866. In 2007, the new clubhouse opened in Tuborg Harbour.  With its soft expression inspired by the shapes of the boats and the flowing character of the water, the building forms an integrated part of the harbour architecture in the form of a strong aesthetic with clear references to the maritime setting.  

Tuborg Harbour is a contemporary district with a mix of housing, offices and recreational activities. Whereas the commercial buildings are large, solitary domiciles and the housing features elongated, horizontal buildings.

A common trait is their precise appearance, simple geometry and the average height of five to six storeys.

The Royal Danish Yacht Club enjoys a central location with an extensive water view encircled by a system of walkways, steps and ramps, which convey the transition between the city and the harbour. 

The clubhouse is the harbour headquarters, and at just 1,000 square metres it is of a different scale than the rest of the buildings. The main architectural feature is the folded roof. It closes the building from the residential area to the south, but opens it up towards the harbour and the stunning views of Øresund. 

 With its angled fan shape, the clubhouse divides the harbour into two sections. The angled effect and the northern orientation ensure that the public restaurant offers views of the harbour through floor-to-ceiling windows. The west- and south-facing patios bathe in the late afternoon sun. 

 The fan form creates ideal shade from the southern sun and only cuts the form where entrances are needed. As you arrive through the entrance of the closed southern facade, the design offers a full view of the harbour and a peek at the sea.

 Built and covered in robust materials such as roofing felt, painted steel, glass and timber, the building is  designed to weather in the sunlight. The ‘shell’ is clad with black roofing felt with no indication of joints or  drainage. The white-painted steel profile frames the building with reference to the white-painted steel hulls of big ships. Inside, the form is wood lined similar to wooden boat decks and fittings.

Travel | travel: is getting a pricey cruise upgrade really worth it.

Lavishing in ultimate luxury doesn’t come cheap, of course. The million-dollar question of “to splurge or not to splurge?” can add thousands of dollars to an already pricey purchase. For those who can afford a stately stateroom, however, they are often afforded a boatload of benefits beyond the deluxe digs.

But like pretty much everything in life, you don’t always get what you pay for. While the majority of passenger ships put the biggest spenders in cruise control with such privileges as exclusive dining options, private lounges and reserved theater seats, some have guests looking at their travel budget with a sinking feeling.

Playing the dual role of travel agent and real estate agent, we’ve checked out some prime properties that, under normal conditions, promise an elevated experience when paying a suntanned arm and leg.

Even without getting into upgrades, cruise fares are all over the nautical map due to such factors as the number of nights, itinerary, season, availability, the cruise line and even the ship itself. For sanity’s sake, we’ll do like a bad kayaking shore excursion and only scratch the surface here.

Focusing on the value-based mainstream cruise market (because, let’s face it, those who can afford the best don’t even blink at upgrading), the big four are serving up a buffet of bundles — and we all know how much cruisers love buffets. The key is making sure your eyes are not bigger than your stomach — or in this case, wallet.

Despite the dizzying number of premium packages out there, a standard inclusion with a suite on mega-ships (those defined as having 1,500 or more cabins) is a “fast pass” of sorts when checking in, boarding, debarking, tendering and dining in the main restaurants.

The OG of exclusive suite zones is Norwegian Cruise Line ( ncl.com ). Having pioneered the concept in 2005, giving it a name — The Haven — in 2011, mass-market NCL offers this elite enclave on the majority of its fleet. This includes the newer Prima-class ships: the 3,099-passenger namesake and 3,215-guest Viva, both of which blur the line between the mainstream and premium categories. A private bar, lounge and restaurant, secluded sundeck and infinity pool, and 24-hour butler service, all within an area accessible only by keycard, will also delight future passengers on the 3,571-guest Norwegian Aqua, debuting in April 2025.

How much is a slice of heaven in The Haven? The fleetwide average fare for a seven-day sail in a 300-square-foot balcony room is around $3,000 per person. That’s chump change and a cracker box compared to one of the two 2,100-square-foot, three-bed, three-bath Duplex Suites that will be on Aqua. At press time, these maritime mansions were about $14,000 per person for a weeklong Caribbean cruise out of Florida next summer.

On Royal Caribbean International’s amazing Icon of the Seas , the largest suite of the world’s largest ship is the 1,772-square-foot, three-story Ultimate Family Townhouse that sleeps eight. It’s got a multi-level slide, a wraparound balcony, whirlpool, areas for karaoke and watching movies, and even a patio with ping-pong.

Royal Caribbean ( royalcaribbean.com ) divides its top suites on its newer and bigger ships into three Royal Suite categories — Sea, Sky and Star — and, no surprise, the Ultimate Family Townhouse belongs in the class named for the physically highest of the trio. Services and amenities are still impressive up in the Sky and even at Sea level, but being a Star comes with pre-paid gratuities, specialty dining and a deluxe beverage package.

Carnival Cruise Line ( carnival.com ) is known for being more fun than fancy, but with every renovation and new ship there is an opportunity to add frills with the thrills. “Fun Ships” don’t have private elevators for guests between suite enclaves and main decks — at least not yet — but most of Carnival’s fleet offers VIP treatment when staying in certain zones. Excel-class suites, available on the 5,282-passenger Jubilee, Celebration and Mardi Gras, provide access at Loft 19, a top-deck sanctuary that offers super-comfortable lounge chairs, an exclusive and spacious infinity whirlpool, and rentable cabanas that come with such indulgences as dedicated concierge service, chilled towels, lunch delivery, and glorious shade.

Other perks of an Excel-class suite include sparkling wine and a fruit bowl upon arrival, soft drink package, and use of the Thermal Suites, which are dedicated relaxation centers that offer seafaring splendor in a variety of environments. Also worth a look before you book are the following communities that come with select services and amenities: Cuban-themed Havana on Vista, Horizon, Panorama and the three Excel ships (for guests 12 and over); Italian-accented Terrazza on Firenze and Venezia (same); wellness-focused Cloud 9 Spa on 13 ships; and Family Harbor. The latter stateroom and suite community, on Celebration, Horizon, Jubilee, Mardi Gras, Panorama and Vista, comes with daily breakfast and snacks in an exclusive family-friendly lounge stocked with age-appropriate video and board games, and movies, an evening of late-night babysitting service at Camp Ocean, and other cool stuff.

Strutting around the loftiest lodging on the beautiful 5,877-passenger Seascape and a dozen other ships in the fleet lends a feeling of being on a cruise within a cruise. Elegance begins with a less stressful embarkation process in port and continues onboard with full-service and buffet-style gourmet dining. Yacht Club privileges also include the best drink and internet packages, 24-hour butler and room service, special concierge desk, perks at the spa, afternoon tea, exclusive pools and lounges, and priority over commoners at several useful places. The Yacht Club experience continues on land should the itinerary include Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, where the private and serene Ocean House Beach awaits with ocean views, beachfront cabanas and inclusive amenities.

Moving on up to the premium category, Disney Cruise Line ( disneycruiseline.com ) has an E-ticket suite on its 4,000-passenger flagship, the mouska-riffic Disney Wish . The apex of accommodations has an avant-garde address. Nestled inside the one funnel that’s just for show is the “Moana”-themed Concierge Wish Tower Suite. Spread across 1,966 square feet and two levels connected by a spiral staircase are four bedrooms, four and one-half bathrooms, and enough space to sleep eight. The happiest place at sea is running about $35,000 for a family of five on a three-day Bahamian cruise next summer.

Within the luxury class, Windstar Cruises ( windstarcruises.com ) has three all-suite motorized Star Plus-class ships in a fleet filled out by a trio of Wind-class sailing yachts. Aboard each of the 312-passenger Star Plus vessels are three owners suites ranging in size from 575 to 1,374 square feet. Over the past two years, Windstar has rolled out two additional suites on each Star Plus yacht, and their concept is not only unique, but award winning. Earning bragging rights as “Best Suites at Sea” (small-ship division) at last year’s Cruise Ship Interior Awards were The Broadmoor and Sea Island suites that match the decor of their namesake five-star resorts in Colorado Springs and the Georgia coast, right down to the furniture, crown moldings and wallpaper.

Hitting the heights, which in the cruising world means the ultra-luxury category, Crystal ( crystalcruises.com ) offers up a 1,372-square-foot Crystal Penthouse Suite on the 740-guest Serenity, which went through a near-complete makeover in 2023. with expansive living areas, a private veranda, elaborate finishings, a Romanesque bathroom, dining area, big-enough private kitchen with a dishwasher and microwave, and, speaking from personal experience, one of the two best butler services at sea. (Seabourn has the other). At last check, bunking in the best of the best on an eight-day Mediterranean cruise was going for about $44,000 for two next summer.

The beauty of cruising is you don’t have to go big or go home. Living the suite life may cost thousands or tens of thousands, but even if the low end is too dear, cruise fares, like ships and passengers, come in all shapes and sizes.

Long Holes Look Intimidating, but It’s the Short Ones That Often Befuddle Golfers

At the British Open at Royal Troon, a short hole called the Postage Stamp has ended many title runs.

The British Open at Royal Troon in Scotland this week might help answer a question vexing professional golf. Is the antidote to golfers hitting increasingly long drives creating holes that are even longer? Or is it the opposite: incredible shortness?

Troon, which is hosting its 10th Open this week, is famous for the Postage Stamp , the name given to its par-3 eighth hole, which is 123 yards on the card but may play under 100 yards this week if the tees are moved up and the pin is put in the front of the green. A tiny green surrounded by five bunkers, the hole has been a feature of the course since 1909.

It’s also a hole length that any golfer can hit. But under pressure, with the wind blowing and a tricky pin position, it’s a length that tests the skill of the most elite golfers.

This year, Troon will also have its opposite. It will have the longest hole in Open history , the par-5 sixth hole that will measure 623 yards. It beats by three yards the 15th hole at Royal Liverpool in last year’s Open.

In some ways, lengthening holes for top pros is akin to billionaires competing to have the longest yacht: It doesn’t really matter at the end of the day. Pros hit the ball so far that length alone doesn’t deter them.

What does is the strategy inherent in the design of the hole. This is where these two opposites at Troon open up a robust debate among top architects as to which matters more today: extreme length or extreme shortness?

“Short holes just fascinate me,” said Ben Crenshaw , a two-time major champion turned golf course architect with his partner Bill Coore. “Some of the great short holes in the world provide a test of accuracy and bravery in a way that a lot of other holes don’t. The Postage Stamp at Troon has been the scene of a lot of carnage and bravery.”

“The long holes are always a test over there because of the conditions,” Crenshaw added. “You only hope that you don’t reach a long hole that’s into the wind. Then it becomes a very difficult proposition. It’s a test that you will see over there.”

There was a time not so long ago when some par-5s were considered unreachable in two shots. (Hitting a par-5 in two, instead of three, is an advantage for players looking to make up ground on the rest of the field, with a birdie or maybe an eagle.)

In 1991, John Daly captivated the golfing world with how far he hit the ball in winning the P.G.A. Championship as a rookie. Two years later, when the U.S. Open was played at Baltusrol Golf Club’s Lower Course, Daly electrified the crowd when he reached the 630-yard 17th in two shots, then the only person to have done that in a tournament.

Some clubs have gone to extreme lengths to protect their holes. The 12th hole at Oakmont Country Club is one. Oakmont, which has hosted nine United States Opens and three P.G.A. Championships, is considered among the toughest golf courses in the United States. And the par-5 12th, always over 600 yards, was considered unreachable in two shots — until it wasn’t. So the last time the club hosted the U.S. Open in 2016, that hole was stretched to 684 yards, making it the longest U.S. Open hole ever.

Not everyone is a fan of that strategy.

“It’s almost impossible now to build a hole that’s unreachable in two, short of making it 700 yards, and I wouldn’t want to do that anyway,” said Tom Doak, who designed the Renaissance Club where the Scottish Open was played last week. “It’s better when the long hitter thinks he can get there, so he will risk getting in trouble to do it.”

Michael Hurdzan, a designer of Erin Hills, the longest course to ever host a U.S. Open at 7,845 yards, said being uncertain or uncomfortable is a better way to challenge elite players.

“If one were silly enough to play the maximum yardage on every hole, Erin Hills would total over 8,500 yards,” he said. “Legend has it that Patrick Reed did that on a practice day and shot 73. Length is not a strong deterrent to scoring among the elite players of today, but making them think is, and that is what a short hole can do.”

The ninth at Erin Hills is just 135 yards with bunkers surrounding it; it made many players at the 2017 U.S. Open unsure.

“The thing about Troon that I love is the capriciousness of the fairways,” Hurdzan said. “That ball can land and scoot one way or the other. They’re trying to hit it hard but now they have to hit it hard and true.”

While holes that are too long can open up a player to shooting many shots over par, they can also have the opposite effect in: removing the temptation to make a heroic shot.

So what needs to be done to keep these championship courses challenging?

Doak had several suggestions. One was a tee-shot hazard so challenging — say a deep, high-walled bunker — that it almost certainly costs players a stroke. Another is to penalize pros with a shot even they don’t like.

“My preference is to have the green bunkered more loosely on a par-5, so the player trying to hit driver off the deck might leave himself a 40-yard bunker shot,” he said. “Even pros hate those. That same bunker shouldn’t bother the guy playing three careful shots.”

A common feature is to put water near the green to claim any errant shots, but Hurdzan criticized that idea as uncreative.

“You want to reduce the margin of error as much as you can at the green, and you can do it with slopes,” he said. “We saw it at Pinehurst for the U.S. Open with all those roll offs. We’re going to see some of that at Troon because those greens have a lot of roll off. You want to design the Saturday and Sunday pin placements with small margins for error.”

Crenshaw, who restored Pinehurst No. 2 in 2011, said those sloping greens were what Donald Ross, the original designer who came from the links of Dornoch in Scotland, intended for championship golf even 100 years ago.

“Those greens defend it so well in so many different ways,” Crenshaw said. “An honest shot has to pull into that green with the proper strength. There are so many [curved] false fronts, if you don’t get the ball up into the green it will roll back on you. You have to play a conservative shot and not go for as many flagsticks. And when you do miss the greens, you’re faced with many delicate shots.”

This is where Crenshaw, a two-time winner of the Masters Tournament, said short befuddled great players more than long.

“Think of the 12th hole at Augusta.,” he said. “That will test you no matter what. It’s the shortest hole on that golf course. And it gets all the attention.”

Of course, at a championship venue like Troon, sometimes both short and long, can be problematic.

In 1982, Bobby Clampett playing in his first Open Championship at age 22 led by five after two rounds. He was off to a solid start with a few more birdies in the third round.

Then at the sixth, the longest hole back then at 577 yards, he carded a triple-bogey 8 that sent him reeling.

In 1997, Tiger Woods, who had turned professional the year before, was in contention at Troon until he took a 6 on the par-3 Postage Stamp hole. “That eighth hole at Troon tests you in all conditions,” Crenshaw said, “because the target is so small.”

And that may make it the better defense to today’s length debate.
