Needless to say, ghost producing is no taboo to us. We are all in. But it still seems to be a bit of a thing within the dance scene: the fact that world famous DJ’s use ghost produced tracks. That they buy entire tracks from ghost producers, or even that they collaborate with ghost producers. Rumors about ghost produced tracks are numerous. Meanwhile, ghost producing must not be named. But why? Let’s explore.

Accepted forms of ghost producing

As we stated before, a ghost producer is in fact the same as a ghostwriter: someone who writes books, speeches, articles, etcetera for someone else, and isn’t named as the author. Apply this to music production and you have the definition of ghost production.

Ghostwriting is actually very common amongst politicians, celebrities, and even writers.

The work needed to produce a track can often be extensive. You need the right time, equipment and knowledge to successfully finish and release a song. Because of this, the main artist isn’t necessarily the only person working on the track. Some musicians will employ the skills of others to help complete their production. What Is A Ghost Producer?

Ghost producers are everywhere in music but rarely seen. They are the unsung heroes of many great tracks.

For a fee, a ghost producer will help an artist write, create and/or produce their own track. However, the ghost producer is given no credit for their work on the track, hens the ‘ghost’ part. They are purely employed for their creative input but agree to not receive any credit. Often a legal agreement is used to ensure they remain anonymous. 

After a boom in EDM in 2014, producers started to employ EDM ghost producers to alleviate some of the pressure. This is where the concept of being a ghost producer took off. The likes of David Guetta have used ghost producers, which may come as a surprise. 

What Does A Ghost Producer Do?

A ghost producer is required to do everything a normal producer does. Songwriting , mixing , sound engineering , all the standard skills are required. The key difference between the two is that a ghost producer works on someone else’s track.  

Once hired by a client, they will work closely with them to determine their goals and ideas for the song. Despite bringing their own creative input, they must work directly towards the client’s demands. The final song should closely represent the client’s idea. Even though the ghost producer brought the technical skill to make that idea a reality, the song itself is still a creation of the client. 

As we’ve said, ghost producers do not receive any official credit. Still, a certain percentage of publishing or mechanical rights can be awarded to the ghost producer, meaning they do have some official claim over the song. Either way, they will always charge a fee for their services. 

Why Hire A Ghost Producer?


If you’re a producer, you may be wondering why anyone would hire a ghost producer? The creative process is part of producing a track and should be purely your own input? In a perfect world, yes. But in reality, the process of making a song can be more challenging than how it appears on the surface. 


Making music requires talent, knowledge and skill. You may have the best ideas and know you’ve got the next big hit in your head, but translating those ideas isn’t a simple task. You might be new to the music scene and just need some help with the technical side. On the other hand, you might be a veteran producer but want some outside, more modern input. You want to work with your creative passion and earn from it. However, you don’t fancy becoming exposed in the public eye and potentially getting recognised for your work. You would rather do what you love but behind closed curtains. This is the life of a ghost producer.

Build Your Reputation As An Independent Producer

When considering how to get into ghost producing, you first need to be confident in your ability. To be hired as a ghost producer you need to be able to prove your skill and talent. Without a portfolio this is impossible. Producing your own tracks first can be a great way to show another producer your ability. You don’t necessarily need to become a famous producer with thousands of tracks under your belt, but already having a list of work you’ve already done will help you massively enter this new career. 

You also need to be used to being completely original with your work. Creativity is the be-all and end-all of ghost producing. Without the ability to produce original tracks independently, you won’t be able to do it for someone else. 

Become An In-House Producer

This is going to be the best way to make it as a ghost producer. If you get signed by a big record label as an in-house producer your career will be off to a great start. This way you will always have a steady flow of work and tracks to develop. Finding the immediate work is the hardest bit, this avoids that issue. 

The pay for producing for a big label will be substantial too. Knowing you will always have work and be paid well for it is the best way to become a comfortable ghost producer. 

Join A Ghost Producing Platform 

This is an alternative approach. There are loads of ghost producing platforms that are visited by artists. However, instead of working directly with artists, you simply upload tracks you have produced. Other artists can visit the page and then buy your song. Once the song has been bought, you no longer own it and are given no credit for it. 

It is very important to remember that you cannot attempt to sell one track on multiple platforms. This is strictly prohibited. You can sell separate tracks on separate platforms, but that’s it. This means it is important to choose your platform wisely. Once your track is up, it can only ever be on that site. Research the platform first and see what type of music is typically sold there. Freelance Work 

Freelance sites can be a great place to find work as a ghost producer. Often ads are posted looking for ghost producers to work on tracks. They might ask you to send some of your work to prove your skill, but generally, you won’t be working on hit songs. This can be good if you’re new to ghost producing, but the compensation is poor. If you spend a lot of time and effort dedicated to producing these tracks, freelance sites are unlikely going to be the place you want to find work.

Professional ($450-1,000)

Yep, you read those numbers right. Ghost producing for a professional artist is where the big bucks are. 

We’re not just talking about any established artists though, we’re talking about famous, chart-hit, sort after musicians who already have a very successful career. They are willing to pay a big price for a ghost producer to produce a song completely on-brand to themselves. Knowing they will earn tens of thousands from this track, the cost isn’t huge in the bigger picture. 

To enter a role at this level you will most likely have to work with the artist’s manager and label.

Two Perspectives on Ghost Production: KSHMR and Alan Walker

KSHMR  and Norwegian DJ/producer Alan Walker are two men who offer an intriguing insight to anyone who wants to learn more about the inherent value of ghost production . Both men harness the power of ghost production to let the music shine at the end of the day, but they approach it from markedly different angles.

KSHMR is a hugely talented producer specializing in Big Room House and Electro House. Over the years, the California native has guided his EDM career in a direction that seems to suit his lifestyle. He has performed at some huge EDM festivals, such as Coachella and Tomorrowland in front of adoring fans. He has released his own tracks, which have millions of hits online. So, KSHMR clearly doesn’t totally avoid the spotlight.

However, KSHMR has also had quieter periods during which he mostly ghost produced music for some of the biggest names in EDM, including Tiesto and DVBBS.


His career actually began with him focusing on making music, which resulted in the emergence of tracks like Tsunami by DVBBS and Borgeous, Slow Down by Selena Gomez, and Like a G6 by Far East Movement; the latter while he was part of The Cataracts.

Even though DVBBS and Tiesto are the two main artists he’s known to ghost produce for , KSHMR’s production credits extend beyond just EDM hits. Songs he’s credited as a writer for include Chris Brown’s Better With The Lights Off , Sweat by Snoop Dogg, and Heart Attack by Enrique Iglesias.

KSHMR then branched out, using his experience and exposure, to build his own brand for a while releasing tracks under his own name and performing in the role of DJ at several music festivals during a helter-skelter 2016. Tracks such as Bazaar, Wildcard, and Dharma became big hits in EDM.

In 2017, the number of gigs KSHMR performed markedly declined, as he presumably wanted a hiatus from the public life to focus again on production, most likely a mix of ghost production and producing tracks for his own brand. It’s evident that ghost production provides talented producers with a solid option for when they want to shy away from the limelight and just focus on making music that sounds great.

KSHMR is also a shrewd operator. Even though it is widely agreed upon that Tiesto had little to no production role in mega-hit Secrets , it was released as a collab between KSHMR and Tiesto. KSHMR understands that releasing some tracks under the Tiesto brand is likely to drive much more exposure than releasing everything he produces under his own name.

At the end of the day, it’s clear KSHMR wants the music to shine. As one Reddit user so eloquently put it, “ Who gives a f*** who produced what. If it sounds good to me, I’m gonna listen to it. End of story. ”

Alan Walker , on the other hand, is not someone who ghost produces music for other artists. Rather, he is well known to use ghost producers and co-producers to help make practically all his tunes. Alan Walker began his career as a relatively average producer releasing progressive house and electro house tracks under the royalty-free NCS label. However, he struck gold with the release of Fade in 2014; a track that became the most popular on the NCS YouTube channel, with over 300 million views.

Sony, paying attention to the popularity of Fade , signed Alan Walker, and there was then a noticeable step up in the quality of his tunes. A much-maligned YouTube walkthrough for his Alone track conveyed the impression that Walker’s actual input on the track was minimal. This video appeared to verify rumors within EDM that Alan Walker is now just the face of a brand, and the actual music he releases is mixed and mastered by other producers who have greater technical knowledge.


Walker’s latest album, Different World, is a case-in-point that highlights the extent to which he gets help from other producers. Released in December 2018, Different World is a pop/ future bass compilation, and the production credits for every single track video on YouTube feature names other than Alan Walker as composer.

The same names appear frequently in the album’s production credits, including Jesper Borgen, Marcus Arnbekk, and Kenneth Nilsen. This lends credence to the argument that artists releasing under the NCS label operate as a collective. Perhaps Sony adopted this model and hired ghost producers to refine and enhance Walker’s signature sound but with the intention to release all those tracks under Walker’s brand.

It would be doing him a disservice to suggest Walker has no part in the creation of his music. Perhaps he begins with a melody or idea in mind, and then his ghost producers complete the track by adding the technical elements.

However light or heavy his input, the ghost production strategy for Alan Walker has paid off handsomely for everyone involved, including the fans. His brand operates like a well-oiled machine.

Without Walker’s signature melodies, which presumably come from the man himself, there would be no music to please his fans. Without the ghost producers who help refine his songs, the Alan Walker sound would probably become stagnant, and he wouldn’t be able to release as prolifically as he does.

Taken together, KSHMR and Alan Walker are at opposite ends of the ghost production spectrum . One produces music for other artists while the other is well-known to enlist the help of other producers to make his music.

But even though they are opposites, KSHMR and Alan Walker are like the yin and yang; opposites that are part of a complete whole. That whole is the production and release of high-quality EDM tracks.

Ghost production arrangements ensure the underlying producers are paid handsomely for their talents and get to do what they love, which is to make music . But just as important, ghost production spreads the wings of electronic music to as many people as possible. And at the end of the day, the music is what matters above all.

Scarface's Tiny Desk concert radiates with his decadeslong passion as an MC and producer. There's calculated intent behind every word and note of this 30-minute set and I learned that his love for golf also runs deep during our initial meeting. He was playing a round and had difficulty dividing his attention between the plan and the course. Three days before the show, amid rehearsals, I got a call from Facemob asking, "What if I brought Mike Dean ?" My expectations were already high, but that final addition set the stage for something special.

Mike Dean provided unmatched authenticity, and their shared stories added sentimental value to this performance. After all, his signature keys and synths can be heard on most of Scarface's classics and countless Rap-A-Lot records. Here, we get a rare glimpse of Scarface the conductor, bouncing through multiple eras of his catalog including "On My Block," "Mary Jane" and the bone-chilling "I Seen a Man Die."

Scarface, along with Rakim, was recently awarded the inaugural Hip-Hop Grandmaster Award from the newly launched Paid in Full Foundation , which includes a sizable financial prize and health care. No matter how the never-ending hip-hop greats debate is sliced, the rapper's place is cemented as one of the most influential storytellers in the culture and his Tiny Desk is proof.
