Spirit 65DH, SPIRIT OF JOSEPHINE

Spirit Yachts Ltd., Spirit 65DH Built 2021 / £1,980,000, VAT paid

Spirit 65DH, SPIRIT OF JOSEPHINE 1

Broker’s Comments

The special thing about what we do at the Berthon Sales Group is that we are trusted with the marketing and sale of so many incredible yachts! Occasionally, we are asked to handle a yacht that tugs on the heartstrings and which is so special in so many respects that she makes the heart sing. Spirit 65DH SPIRIT OF JOSEPHINE is one such yacht.

Essentially a new yacht – she was first commissioned in 2021. Her first overnight voyage was from the East Coast of the UK, to our shipyard on the Solent. All Spirit Yachts look amazing. Spirit 65DH, SPIRIT OF JOSEPHINE at 65 feet carries her deck saloon beautifully and her fine ends and elegant transom really work. Her spirit of tradition and good looks belie the modern technology that has been used to ensure that she is truly carbon neutral. Twin electric motors, sustainable Lignia decks and soleboards, and the intelligent use of lithium ion batteries to power her systems, regenerated by her variable pitch sail drives. Her on-board 48v generator is for back up only. Of course, her primary propulsion are her sails and here she is fast, easily sailed and very responsive.

On deck and down below, she has been hand crafted throughout, with a comfortable cockpit and charming deck saloon which is a great place for watch keeping when in open water.

Possibly SPIRIT OF JOSEPHINE’s biggest surprise is her main saloon, which is an uncompromising and proper living space with a large natural zinc galley counter and 4 bar stools in stainless steel. The galley also has a Barista coffee machine and grinder in addition to the refrigeration, storage and cooker you would expect. Two easy chairs and a sofa complete the picture all executed in Harris Tweed and Galveston leather from Tetrad. The forward bulkhead holds custom storage for her full set of mythical creatures collection of crockery by Wedgewood.

Forward is a generous en-suite owner’s cabin with a further double berthed cabin and upper and lower berthed cabin with a separate heads aft of the main saloon.

Every detail in the construction and fit out of SPIRIT OF JOSPEHINE has been carefully considered in order to make this special yacht not just beautiful and kind to the planet, but practical, easy to handle shorthanded and capable of passage making in security and comfort. She is quite simply, unique.

Owner’s Comments

I have much enjoyed the experience of specifying and building Spirit 65DH SPIRIT OF JOSPEHINE. I have always sailed but our previous yachts have been more production orientated. Therefore, the opportunity to work with Spirt Yachts to produce a yacht that is close to carbon neutral, bespoke and beautiful has been a privilege. She sails beautifully and is easy to handle and to look after. The Awlwood system used to protect the solid mahogany brightwork lasts for up to 10 years. SPIRIT OF JOSEPHINE has a full set of covers for when not in use. For us, knowing that the ongoing maintenance was containable/manageable – was key in our decision to commission the yacht’s build.

Spirit Yachts – Comments

The Spirit 65DH (Deckhouse) was designed by Spirit Yachts to fulfil a couple’s dream of cruising in the UK, Mediterranean and Caribbean. The brief from the owners was to create a beautiful yet practical cruising yacht that leaves minimal impact on the environment. Family life is at the focal point of the Spirit 65DH, with an open plan galley and breakfast bar designed to emulate the owners’ kitchen at home. Personal touches continue throughout the interior making the Spirit 65DH a true ‘home from home’ yacht for her owners and their children.

The 65DH has a Bermudan sloop rig with carbon spars, nitronic rod rigging and 4T FORTE™ recyclable sails from OneSails. The yacht has eco features throughout and includes twin Oceanvolt variable pitch sail drives, which will regenerate 21kW Lithium Valance batteries. A Fischer Panda 48v generator has been installed as a backup if required. On deck, all controls are within easy reach in the cockpit, running rigging is led aft, and Lewmar electric winches have been fitted to facilitate short-handed bluewater cruising. Large lazarette lockers in the stern provide plenty of storage for diving and watersports equipment, as well as an inflatable tender with Torqeedo electric outboard. A deck socket and crane with accompanying winch has been fitted for easy launch and recovery of the tender.

Smooth and sustainable Lignia decking gives way to the raised Sipo Mahogany coachroof, which forms the deckhouse section of the yacht. With panel windows on every side and 360-degree views of the horizon, the deckhouse doubles as an interior navigation station with Raymarine instruments and a guest seating area.

Down below, the natural upholstery colours selected by the owners complement the walnut cabinetry and exposed Sipo Mahogany ringframes. White timber bulkheads and deckheads retain a light and elegant feel throughout the interior.

Upon descending from the deckhouse, passing a starboard-side Pullman cabin, the interior reveals an open plan galley and saloon. Unlike many Spirits, the 65DH has a breakfast bar with high stools incorporated into the galley, which serves as the dining area. The galley is well-equipped for long distance passages and cruising in style with a fridge, freezer, four-hob electric oven, dishwasher, filtered drinking water tap and coffee machine.

Forward of the galley is a lounge-style saloon with an L-shaped sofa to port, which faces two Chesterfield armchairs on the starboard side.

Aft of the galley, on the port side, is a double cabin with accompanying head comprising an electric flushing toilet, basin and rain shower.

Situated forward of the saloon is the en-suite master cabin. A double bed with steps either side and storage drawers underneath is complemented by a starboard-side table with integrated storage compartment and mirror.

The port-side en-suite comprises an electric flushing toilet, basin and rain shower.

LED lighting, air conditioning and USB ports throughout complete this spacious interior designed to have all the comforts of home.

First look: Spirit 30 – Spirit’s smallest ever yacht

  • Rupert Holmes
  • November 11, 2021

The all-new Spirit 30 is the smallest yacht ever produced by the well regarded British yard which specialises in modern classic wooden yachts. Rupert Holmes reports

spirit of yachts

The sleek classic style of all Spirit Yachts is guaranteed to turn heads and the Ispwich-based yard’s smallest new model for many years, the spirit 30 is no exception.

The Spirit 30 follows the well-proven format of a light displacement, modern hull shape below the water allied to a performance rig and sails. It’s a combination that delivers speeds which belie the boat’s modest dimensions.

During the commissioning sail, for example, the Spirit 30 recorded 6.8 knots of boat speed close-hauled and 10 knots off the wind in 18-20 knots of breeze.

Yet this is civilised vessel with a self-tacking furling jib and all sail controls led aft for easy single and short-handed sailing. The first example is an open day sailer with a large cockpit, although there are also plans for a version with a cuddy and basic overnight accommodation.

Auxiliary power is from a Torqeedo Cruise 4.0FP electric pod drive. This offers a 16-mile range at five knots with the standard battery and a maximum speed under power of 6.5 knots.

The wood epoxy composite construction is one of the most sustainable options for building a new boat, requiring far less noxious resins and plastics than conventional fibreglass structures.

Typically three layers of timber are epoxy glued together, creating an extremely stiff, yet very light, monocoque structure. A protective outer layer of glass cloth and epoxy is then applied, which enhances waterproofing and provides impact resistance.

Spirit Yachts has gone a stage further than usual with this boat, using flax fibres and bio resins for the outer layer. The result is what the company says is its most sustainable yacht to date and plans to roll out the same materials to the larger boats in the range.

The Spirit 30 is offered with a choice of fixed or lifting keels and the boat is light enough to be towed on a road trailer. The first example is scheduled to be exhibited at the Dusseldorf boat show in January 2022.

ON TEST: Spirit 44e – the sustainable future of sailing?

  • Theo Stocker
  • November 1, 2020

A wooden boat that blazes a trail for modern technology and sustainability sounds too good to be true. Theo Stocker went to see if the Spirit 44e is as good as promised

Product Overview

Spirit yacht 44cr electric.

Boats have been built out of wood since Noah first put axe to tree, but when it comes to cutting-edge yachts, timber is right back at the top.

Spirit Yachts have been building head-turningly pretty wooden yachts with stiff, lightweight laminated wooden hulls since 1993, including the largest wooden yacht built in the UK since the 1930s in the shape of the Spirit 111 , launched this year.

But away from all the fanfare, the Ipswich-based yard has also just launched Avvento , smaller sister to its 47 and 55 Cruising Range yachts.

Far from being a lesser vessel, however, the Spirit 44 Cruising Range Electric Boat (44e for short) hides advances in sustainable technology under its gleaming topsides that offer a glimpse into the future of boat building.

Unrecyclable fibreglass and sails, toxic antifoul, and fossil-fuel propulsion are replaced by sustainably sourced timber, self-sufficient electric propulsion and zero-carbon emissions.

spirit of yachts

The proud new owner is Vincent Argiro, a retired technology entrepreneur who lives and sails in British Columbia in Canada.

Explaining his motivation to go for such a radical concept, he said: ‘My first sailboat was also the first of its kind to be built all-electric. I have never owned anything else, nor will I.

‘To me, it is a terrible corruption of the beauty and simplicity of sailing to add internal-combustion propulsion to it.’

spirit of yachts

She is built, Spirit claims, to last a hundred years and to be largely recyclable when the time does come. In the intervening century, she will burn no hydro-carbons whatsoever with not even a backup generator on board, or, for that matter, any obvious renewable energy sources. I was curious to see how she worked.

spirit of yachts

THE TEST VERDICT

The Spirit 44e is a fabulously expensive boat given her limited accommodation and shorter than average waterline length, if you are going to judge her by volume.

As managing director Nigel Stuart says: ‘You need to think about her volume relative to her waterline rather than overall length.’ That’s a nice idea, if you have the luxury of not worrying about marina fees.

spirit of yachts

You can get a lot of boat for this kind of budget, so why would you buy the Spirit 44e? Firstly, she is drop dead gorgeous. From her sleek lines to her dovetail joints, there is no part of the boat that is not a pleasure to look at.

Then, she is utterly engaging to sail. Lightweight, powerful and responsive, helming her will put a smile on your face, while she should cope equally well with the rough stuff. Finally, she is light years ahead of most production yachts in terms of environmental impact.

spirit of yachts

I would opt for the smaller rig and higher boom, and I’d like narrower cockpit seats. Most owners would opt for a backup diesel generator for peace of mind, though with new battery tech on its way, unlimited range is within reach.

The Spirit 44e goes a very long way to prove that yachts can be built and run in a sustainable way.

spirit of yachts

Would the Spirit 44e suit you and your crew?

This boat isn’t about mass-market appeal, but who wouldn’t fall in love given half a chance? In reality, for the kind of cruising most sailors really do, weekends and a few weeks here and there, she is luxuriously comfortable for a cruising couple with occasional guests. Liveaboard cruising is more of a stretch, but entirely feasible, while she’ll also do well racing round the cans.

There’s plenty of entertaining space, particularly on deck once you’re in harbour, and if you don’t mind the stares, she turns heads wherever she goes.

Very few boats out there could hold a hydrocarbon-free candle to the Spirit 44e. Even Noah might have been tempted to leave his animals for this boat.

Top Ten “Spirit of Tradition” Yachts for 2017.

Posted on January 16, 2017 and filed under Brokerage , Design , Spirit of Tradition

And so it begins: 2017 will be the year the Spirit of Tradition story finally gets set down on paper. We cannot explain why the world has not bothered to document what went down design-wise in Mid-coast Maine over the past 20 years. How the talented — and the flawed — mixed traditional classic yachts with modern materials. And how these pioneers pushed back the barriers for performance and design. And changed boating, for better or worse. It’s a story that will take a while to tell. Probably, well into 2018. But this is the year we are on it, at last.

Here then is the state of the Spirit of Tradition Art of 2017.

Built of aluminum in 1999, at England’s legendary  Pendennis Shipyard , and nearly 140 ft. long overall,  Rebecca remains one of our favorite defining examples of Spirit of Tradition design in action. Note how her above-water hull and deck are squarely and conservatively styled in the 19th-century classic idiom. But head down below, and she features a Robin Black-designed restrained interior that melds modern luxuries with the highest standards of bespoke modern yachts: 11-knot maximum speed and  a library?! All that performance spins out of a cleverly engineered modern underbody and surprisingly cutting edge sail plan. Rebecca may be comfy and elegant. But her Spirit of Tradition performance and ease-of-use make this a beast under sail.  She’s an elegant and powerful example of German Frers’ talent.

Vortex:  Swede 55, Knud Reimers.

Vortex matters, and not because she’s built of composite wood (  Brooklin Boat Yard , 1990).  What makes this boat essential is where she lies on the timeline in the Spirit of Tradition continuum. We suggest the modern SOT era begins in 1975, this Reimers’ Swede 55 square-meter design was penned in ’75 and is good example of our early days of SOT continuum.  Our industry and any regattas wrongfully tend to treat yachts like this as classics.  In past years, Vortex has been classed as an SOT boat only due to her construction material.  Dead wrong. (We’ll leave the broader philosophical discussion for another time as to the difficulties meter-rule boats present to SOT, but is a discussion we feel is important to our narrative.)  By our rubric, the year when  Vortex was drawn, marks the beginnings of time for SOT  and makes clean breaks from previous classes.  In part, begins the call and response that stretches back to the characteristics of classic yachts, mixed with modern materials and ideas. She features classic, testy overhangs and a slender hull, a modern underbody and rig. Vortex is the first lovely twist in the naval tale that is the Spirit of Tradition.

Wild Horses:  W – Class 76, Joel White.

Wild Horses is another defining boat in the Spirit of Tradition yacht design. Built by the Brooklin Boat Yard, of composite wood construction in 1998, designer Joel White drew a thoroughbred classic in hand and style, loosely based on N. G. Herreshoff’s NY50’s. But with twin Harken coffee grinders in the cockpit, and other go-fast technology, she’s a complete and utter monster on the race course. Wild Horses remains one of the coolest boats we know, in a lean and dangerous Cool Hand Luke sort of way. She’s fast and weatherly, but still features a classic race-oriented deck, and glorious wide-open interior space below.  She’s also the identifiable marker of a design that saw the resurgence of a so-called “active” SOT fleet.  We’re intrinsic to the DNA of this design, having a direct hand in her build, her engineering and the rest of W-Class design lineage, with the W-46, and -37 designs.  We’re wrapped up in her, on many levels.

Hetairos is 67 meters of pure, all-out performance and classic appearance. She was built by Baltic Yachts in carbon composite in 2011.  Above and below, she’s  stunning; she’s modern; she’s absolute! Hetairos projects all things classic, and aggressive in a boat. But the notion of a wolf in sheep’s clothing blunts the cutting edge she lives on. There’s carbon composite throughout the hull and hardwood veneer throughout the interior. So, not only does the bulb keel lift, but so does the rudder. And while, technically she’s a ketch, both spars carry serious sail plans. That makes her ideally suited for long-distance, relatively short-handed sailing.  She could easily cross any ocean, and back, at will. She brags to the world what the Spirit of Tradition means: Eye-catching, head-turning, fast, and modern. If you’re looking for the flashiest entry-point to the SOT story, Hetairos is it. Love.

Whitefin:  Custom, Bruce King.

When owner/builder Bruce King built Whitefin in 1983 at his Renaissance Yacht shipyard  in Camden, Maine, his 90-foot overall sloop defined the luxury and speed standard in Spirit of Tradition yachts of the time.  Built of cedar and epoxy, she proved lovely to sail and brutally fast on the racing circuit. We believe she’s taken home the silver at European Maxi racing stops like Porto Cervo, Saint Tropex, and Imperia. This is nearly 100-feet of one elegant detail after another: The wide oval conversation pit/cockpit; the sweeping staircase down below, the fireplace?! It’s all here.  And it all mixes the best classic ideas with the most effective technologies. She’s also available for charter.  If you want a rich ripe bite of the SOT experience, a week on her is worth the cost.

Savannah , Custom, Pedrick Yacht Designs.

Built in carbon composite by Concordia Yachts in 1997, Savannah was a design meant to give off the impression of a century-old yacht. She’s a kind of a Fife-inspired, rust-your-eyeballs-out club racer. And she was a marvelous thing when she hit the water. We believe she won the Best Sailing Yacht Under 36 Meters from the Superyacht Society in 1998. And she probably is the first hi-tech composite build of a vessel with such clearly antique styling.  All the details that become standard in SOT boats were in play here: Hi-tech construction, classic cues, modern underbody and rig, and a deliciously crafted interior.  If there is a sleeper classic in the Spirit of Traditional club, Savannah is it.

Wallynano, Custom, Andre Hoek Design

The Wallynano,  built by Nedship Group  in Turkey in 2008, shows that the word “contemporary” is within the Spirit of Tradition narrative, without bias.  At first glance, this day-sailor looks like an ultramodern racer with questionable design lineage. But look closer. You’ll sense a traditional deck house, a narrow wholesome classic pilot-cutter hull form, plumb stem and a lovely stern overhang with a great looking transom.  Builder Wally deserves credit for designing the daylights out of this boat: They’ve invested in extensive fluid dynamics models and four different computer-numerically-controlled scale models to get this boat just right. Blend all that research with a great contemporary style and this is a serious Spirit of Tradition design. Our hats off to Andre Hoek Design for embodying many of the cues we require in a Spirit of Tradition boat.  The Wallynano is a blazing fast, easy-to-sail dayboat that looks great sailing and sitting at the mooring. Bravo!

M-Series:  Morris Yachts, Sparkman & Stephens.

The M-Series, from the venerable production builder Morris, represents the other end of the Spirit of Tradition narrative: Boats that represent a solid entry in mixing the classic with the modern.  M-Series boats have little of the showy splash of dramatically new design idioms. Rather, they seek to quietly stretch the boundaries of construction, decor, and target markets. Starting from just 20 feet on the water, M-Series boats are well-suited to advanced and beginner sailors. They serve a critical niche outside the glossy custom yacht industry we mostly work in. We like the intelligence in play: Control lines run back to deep and comfy cockpits, and modern interior details. And down below, we find all comforts well-designed and airy. The M-Series cover the basics of classic lines, modern equipment, and streamlined sailing for Spirit of Tradition boats. Nice work!

Tango: Custom, Judel / Vrolijk

This boat pleases us, as its designers admit the craft was a direct springboard from our W-Class 37,  called Race Horse.  Take a look at the original and you decide how well they did! German makers Judel/Vrolijk opened up all the aspects that excite us about this boat to the public. with this excellent construction blog . Here you can dig through the details of what it takes to make a Spirit of Tradition pure-performance boat: the use of carbon and wood for hi-tech composite structures; how the sail handling lines were built from scratch to run cleanly, but hidden, underdeck; what it takes to engineer a modern composite spar and running rigging package into a small day sailor; how to finish off the boat with the right modern, limited aesthetic details. Tango  is a spirited little daysailer that flies. And isn’t that what we all get into boats to do?

Isobel , Stephens Waring Yacht Design.

Time for the shameless plug: We believe we can argue with anybody that our recently-finished sloop  Isobel   pushes the edges of the Spirit of Tradition envelope. She features an edgy superstructure, sleek and modern deck layout, blended with bold and classic lines, stripped down to an elemental standard, dashed with a bit of current design flare. We suggest she exhibits all the elements of style, proportion, technology and performance capability that define a modern Spirit of Tradition yacht. We also understand that she inspires serious debate from those who contend she’s outside the SOT idiom. But that’s why we love her. We tried to create an Isobel that’s neither scientifically classed nor systemically restrained. We were around for the beginning of the SOT movement. And we know in our souls that if these boats are to succeed, the market for them must be vibrant. Stale is for bread, not for design style. SOT or not, we wish to inspire imagination and to attract new and fresh blood into sailing. That’s why we work hard to explore new ideas and out-of-box thinking. To us, that is what the Spirit of Tradition is.

Boeing Is Said to Offer Stock to Buy Spirit, Preserving Cash Amid Struggles

The plane maker is expected to soon strike a deal to acquire most of the operations of Spirit AeroSystems, a troubled supplier that makes the bodies of the 737 Max.

The green body of a 737 Max plane outside a Spirit factory.

By Niraj Chokshi and Lauren Hirsch

In a bid to acquire a key supplier, Boeing has shifted how it plans to pay for the deal, according to two people familiar with the negotiations, a move that could help the plane maker preserve money as it addresses safety and quality problems.

Boeing would use stock instead of cash to buy Spirit AeroSystems, said the two people, who were not authorized to speak publicly about the deal. One added that Boeing would pay more than $4 billion for Spirit, which produces aviation parts, including the body of the Boeing 737 Max, the company’s most popular plane.

One of the people familiar with the talks said that the decision to shift to stock from cash was not expected to significantly delay a deal, which could be announced as soon as next week.

Based on its stock price on Tuesday, Spirit has a market value of more than $3.6 billion.

News that Boeing was proposing to use its stock, rather than cash, to buy Spirit was reported earlier by The Wall Street Journal .

Paying in stock could help Boeing’s financial situation as it invests in improving production quality after a panel blew away from a 737 Max plane during an Alaska Airlines flight in January. The Federal Aviation Administration limited the company’s ability to increase production of the 737 Max after the January incident. In May, Boeing said its operations would use more cash than it brought in this year.

The negotiations to acquire Spirit have been complicated by the fact that Spirit also supplies parts to Boeing’s biggest competitor, Airbus. That company is expected to take over the operations of Spirit that produce parts for Airbus.

Federal investigators have said that the plane involved in the January incident appeared to have left a Boeing factory without the bolts needed to secure the panel in place. In the months that followed, Boeing has taken a number of steps to improve quality. Last week, its chief executive, Dave Calhoun, faced tough questioning from lawmakers about the episode and two fatal crashes involving the Max in late 2018 and early 2019.

Boeing’s problems with the 737 Max were compounded by the pandemic, which disrupted the supply chain across the aviation industry. While the supply of materials and parts has recovered somewhat, it remains challenged.

On Monday, Airbus lowered the number of commercial planes it expects to deliver to airlines this year to 770, from a previous estimate of around 800. The company, based in Toulouse, France, said it was struggling to get enough engines, plane structures and cabin equipment. As a result of that change and problems in its space business, Airbus lowered its profit and cash flow forecast for 2024. The company’s stock was down 10 percent on Tuesday after its announcement.

Boeing: A Company in Turmoil

Settlement Violation: The Justice Department is considering allowing Boeing to avoid criminal prosecution  for violating the terms of a 2021 settlement related to problems with the company’s 737 Max 8 model that led to two deadly crashes in 2018 and 2019.

Senate Hearing: Confronted by families of those killed on two flights, Dave Calhoun, Boeing’s chief executive, apologized for “the grief that we have caused.”

Very Little Oversight: A top F.A.A. official said that the agency failed to adequately oversee Boeing  and that it should have had better visibility into the plane manufacturer’s safety practices long before a door panel blew off a plane.

Is It Time for a New Plane?: Some analysts say building a new plane would help the company regain the ground it has lost to Airbus. But doing so would be difficult and expensive .

Plan To Fix Safety Issues: Boeing’s top executives delivered a plan to improve quality and safety to the F.A.A ., vowing to address systemic issues that have damaged the company’s reputation and put the manufacturer at the center of several federal investigations.

The Best New Small-Ship Cruises to Book in 2024

A uthentic. It was Merriam Webster's top searched word for 2023 and one that has dominated the travel vernacular in recent years. And while many would not necessarily associate the word with ocean cruising , the growth in popularity of small-ship cruises-particularly sailings with 500 guests or fewer-indicates that in the cruising world, passengers are seeking a more intimate, less crowded, and yes, arguably more authentic sailing experience.

Take expedition cruising , for example. As the number of adventure-focused ships and yachts has exploded in recent years, these cruises are no longer just about extreme voyages in polar regions. They are also about offering a deeper look into the culture, food, history, and environmental fragility of remote wonders of the world.

Although there isn't a huge number of new small ships being introduced, there are a few notable vessels that have either recently launched or are launching this year with a focus on the idea that smaller is not just better, but more sustainable, too. These new small-ship cruises bring with them some exciting and more immersive new itineraries to destinations both warm and wintry that have us ready to pack our bags and sail away.

Sea Cloud Cruises' "Sea Cloud Spirit"

  • Suggested itinerary: Reset your mind and body on an eight-night sailing through Spain's Canary Islands and on to Morocco on a special cruise featuring experts in restorative health. Pricing starts at $4,895 per person.

What's more authentic-and sustainable-than setting sail on a tall ship where the sails are hoisted up each day by hand? Although not technically new (it was launched in 2021), the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit and its two sister ships, Sea Cloud and Sea Cloud II , are upping their game in a push to introduce Sea Cloud Cruises' unique product to North American travelers. The German company has traditionally catered to German and British passengers. As part of its effort to expand its reach and appeal, Sea Cloud is adding wellness programs with daily onboard yoga and guest fitness gurus, in addition to special food- and wine-focused sailings with well-known chefs making appearances. Sea Cloud Spirit , the largest of the three-ship fleet with 69 cabins, was meticulously designed to pay homage to the original Sea Cloud , which was the world's largest private sailing yacht when Wall Street broker Edward Francis Hutton had it built in 1931 for his wife, Marjorie Merriweather Post.

The Sea Cloud Spirit combines the experience of decades of traditional seamanship with the modern-day luxuries of a private yacht. Cabins range from 172-square-foot single cabins to 300-square-foot balcony suites with soaking tubs. There's a large fitness center and spa, which has a steam room, sauna, and thermal area for two; indoor and outdoor lounges; and a main dining area, plus a more casual bistro. The action, however, is out on deck, where passengers can stargaze at night or simply gaze in awe at the impressive sails blowing in the wind.

Atlas Ocean Voyages' "World Navigator"

  • Suggested itinerary: Go searching for Arctic wildlife on a 12-night cruise from Reykjavík, which sails along the eastern coast of Greenland and to Longyearbyen in the Svalbard archipelago, one of the world's northernmost inhabited areas and home to polar bears, reindeer, arctic foxes, and other Nordic wildlife. Pricing starts at $6,499 per person.

World Navigator , which sailed its maiden voyage in Antarctica this past November, is the third vessel to join the fleet of one of the newest players in small-ship expedition cruising, Atlas Ocean Voyages. The company's 100-cabin expedition yachts are almost identical and provide a hybrid of sorts between traditional expedition and luxury cruising. Cabins are spacious, almost all with balconies, desks, and seating areas. The bathrooms have glass-mosaic tiled showers with rain showerheads, wall jets, and even benches.

Everything on the ship-including the sauna with floor-to-ceiling windows-is designed to provide maximum views. The ships also have spacious pool decks with two hot tubs, a fitness center overlooking the sea, a spa, and water toys like kayaks and paddleboards. There's even extreme camping gear for those willing to brave an overnight under the stars in Antarctica. During North American winters, all three of Atlas's expedition yachts sail in Antarctica. With the addition of World Navigator , the company is launching more Arctic Circle cruises during the North American summers while also adding a host of new epicurean and cultural expeditions in South America, the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, and northern Europe this year.

Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection's "Ilma"

  • Suggested itinerary: Spend a little extra time in port on a 10-day sailing from Barcelona to Lisbon, which has three overnight stays, in Palma de Mallorca and Malaga in Spain, and in Lisbon, Portugal, one of Europe's oldest cities. Pricing starts at $10,600 per person.

Another newcomer to luxury small-ship cruising is the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, which debuts its second ship, the Ilma , this year. With 224 suites, the ship is larger than the original Ritz-Carlton yacht, the 149-suite Evrima , which launched in October 2022. On the Ilma , all the suites will have private terraces, including a two-story suite with soaking tub; the coveted, 1,000-square-foot owner's suite has a private outdoor whirlpool. Even the smallest suites are not all that small, at 300 square feet, and come with a personal concierge and 24-hour room service. The yacht boasts what Ritz-Carlton says is the highest ratio of space per guest at sea.

And you can expect to find the same meticulous service standards that you would find at Ritz-Carlton resorts throughout the world as the line aims to impress hotel guests seeking a luxury hotel experience at sea. Onboard are five dining venues, including S.E.A., a European tasting experience designed by chef Sven Elverfeld of Aqua, the three Michelin-starred restaurant at the Ritz-Carlton in Wolfsburg, Germany; Talaat Nam, featuring Southeast Asian cuisine and a sushi bar; and Mistral, a casual come-as-you-are alfresco grill with a Mediterranean-inspired menu. Light bites are served at the marina at the aft of the ship, where you can also hop on a borrowed paddleboard. Oh, and did we mention there are two outdoor pools, too?

Book a terrace suite on the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection's newest vessel, Ilma , launching in 2024.
