It is almost that time of the year, and whether true or not, I sure love a good ghost story.
Although, by no means am I a qualified paranormal investigator, I have compiled stories and locations said to be true of Sioux City, Iowa.
Lets go to the first location:
Briar Cliff University
3303 Rebecca St. Sioux City, IA
Anyone who goes/has gone to Briar Cliff can tell you about the ghost stories heard about on campus, and although not verified, many are convinced some are true . I have had my own fair share of scares in the old North Hall building, which is now set up with studios for the infamous artists (including myself). Many people have graduated without knowing the purpose of the building. However, I spent countless nights there working on artwork, and have heard many strange noises including the voices of a young woman, multiple men, pushing of chairs and tables, and doors closing. All of this happened when the door was locked from the outside. Although, I must admit I never saw anything that qualifies as paranormal.
There are many stories about a nun who hanged herself, and this story always changes. Some say she in the bathroom of 1st floor Alverno Hall, which is the logical explanation for it being the only bathroom with the bathtub walled up (they say she hanged herself from the bathtub rail), and others say she did in Heelan Hall. Although this is not true, there have been 2 confirmed deaths by accidents in Heelan Hall.
I spoke to security and he has witnessed shadowy figures walking through walls, voices, and doors being closed in front of him.
Prairie Hill Facility
Rural Sioux City
This facility is now owned by Woodbury County, and it "houses jail work-release participants and kitchen facilities used to prepare meals for the main jail in downtown Sioux City. Years ago, it served as the county's institutional home. Sheriff deputies use the imposing brick building for training and some offices, but say the facility is now host to strange occurrences."
Sheriff's deputies and visitors have described seeing figures looking at them from the 3rd floor windows, and the elevator responds to the third floor without being summoned. This all adds to the creepiness of the building, and the stories the visitors tell.
Truth or not, would you take that elevator?
Long Lines Family Recreation Center
401 Gordon Dr, Sioux City, IA 51102
For more than 50 years, this auditorium has hosted events ranging from graduations, to concerts, and many famous speeches including those by Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy. Even Elvis Presley performed on that same stage. During the early 2000's, the auditorium's use became to decline, so the building was turned into the recreation center it is today.
However, not everything was happy . At least 2 deaths have been recorded here. During the constructing of the building, an electrician named Rodriguez was killed on his birthday, when he was accidentally electrocuted. His body was found when his wife stopped by to bring him a suit for their dinner since it was his birthday. 20 years later, a 12-year old boy was also killed when he fell off the building's roof while hunting for pigeons with his friend. His friend, assuming that the boy had gone home when he did not find him, also headed home. 2 weeks later, the body of the boy was found at the bottom of a roof exhaust shaft, which was a fall of 150-feet.
Today, it is said that the spirits of those two are among those that haunt the auditorium today. Employees and visitors have reported phantom footsteps, particularly during the evening hours, others have reported the ghost of the boy sitting in one of the seats of the upper level of the auditorium, viewing the performances below, some have reported hearing the boy weep. There are also reports of "Rodriguez" turning the lights on and off.
2802 Casselman St, Sioux City
Calvary Cemetery is said to be haunted, visitors claim the same story. Some have described a loud ringing in their ears as they enter the cemetery, and are greeted by what feels like spider-webs or fingertips drifting across their faces. Those sensations only grow as they approach a grave site where there is a headstone carved into a tree, which rumor has it, was used as a hanging tree. Some say that the ropes are still on the tree.
It is said that a student here committed suicide by hanging herself from the heating pipes in her dorm room in Dimmit Hall. Some call it the "hidden hall" since there is no exit from that hall, as one has to go up a level or down a level, meaning that her spirit is trapped on that floor. Those who have lived in her room, have reported hearing crying and the voice of a girl, followed by choking or gagging noises as they are studying. There have also been reports of seeing the ghost of a crying girl walk through the door to that room.
The First Bride’s Grave Monument
South Ravine Park, Sioux City
In 1938, a monument was built near the grave of Rosalie Menard Leonais. She was called the “first bride” because she was believed to be the first bride of a non-Native American in the area. She died in 1865, at only 27 years old, shortly after the birth of their son William.
To see the site, one must walk up a long path to the crest of the hill which towers above interstate 29. It is dangerous and not recommended. The story here is that the bride can be seen pacing back and forth from her stone, along the edge of the ridge. There are many stories about what happens when you visit. The main one is that of a young boy who was killed when the stone fell over and crushed him. After that incident, a fence was built around the stone. Some say that if you try to enter the fence, a force will throw you off the stone, and will try to push you over the edge of the ridge. There are stories of visitors who have heard footsteps, have seen orbs, and felt cold spots as they came near the site.
Joy Hollow (Girls Scout Camp)
14092 Butcher Rd, Westfield, IA 51062
Just 19 miles away in Westerfield, Iowa, is the Girls Scout campsite, Joy Hollow. a former scout said, "I was always on edge and scared and after dark I didn’t want to go anywhere but home." It is said that a girl died in those woods and her body was never found. Visitors believe that her spirit haunts those woods. Some girls tested this by making dolls and putting them in a bed in one of the cabins while they went to supper. When the girls returned, the dolls had mysteriously been moved to another bed, and no one had been in that room. Rumor has it that objects will float, an apparition with blood on its face can be seen, and that some girls have come out of the shower with handprints on them.
Here are only a few of the many stories that are out there. Do you or your friends have any of your/their own?
If you want to go investigate these places, remember to ask for permission, because some of these places require that you do so.
Disclaimer: these stories are not verified or unverified. Many of these are stories that have circulated for years and many have changed over time. Whether you want to believe them or not, it is up to you.

The six most iconic pitbull lyrics of all time, mr. worldwide just wants to see you succeed..
It is no secret that Pitbull is a gifted artist, but many fail to remember that he can be a source of great inspiration as well. The following is a list of iconic Pitbull lyrics that we know and love. Read on to feel empowered — if you think you can handle it.
1. Look up in the sky, it's a bird, it's a plane / No, it's just me, ain't a damn thing changed. (From "Timber") Not a day goes by that I don't see Pitbull flying over my rooftop, dressed in white linen from head-to-toe and drinking a Capri Sun. If that image doesn't motivate you to be better, then nothing will.
2. Been around the world like the sun / I've seen more breast than your newborn son. (From "Shake Senora") Need to boost your resume? Trying to impress a colleague? Use this line. Watch them be amazed, first by your worldly experience and then by your rhyming ability. Thank Pitbull later.
3. And it's not our fault that we have all the ladies / But it's hard to see these ladies when your middle name's Equator / All around the globe, matter fact, see you later. (From "Celebrate") Take a lesson from the school of Mr. 305 — it doesn't have to make any sense, it just has to rhyme . Also, it is possible to have all the ladies, even with a middle name like "Equator."
4. In L.A. they get krazy / Miami they get krazy / In New York they get krazy / Atlanta they get krazy / In London they get krazy / In Paris they get krazy / In Rome they get krazy. (From "Krazy")
Pitbull wants you to never stop studying your map of the world. Learn the names of every city. Say them one after another, all the time. However, Pitbull also wants you to know that you can put that dictionary down. Spelling doesn't matter. Kraziness is universal.
5. Modern day Hugh Hef (uh yes) / Playboy to the death (uh yes) / Is he really worldwide? (uh yes). (From "Dance Again") Does Pitbull wait for someone to answer his questions? No, because he's a grown-ass man who knows the answers. Are you going to wait around for someone else to answer your questions, or are you going to be like Pitbull? Be like Pitbull. Be a grown-ass man who parenthetically answers his own questions.
6. This for anybody going through tough times / Believe me, been there, done that / But every day above ground is a great day, remember that. (From "Time of Our Lives") If Pitbull tells you to be thankful, then be thankful, dammit. After all, we live in an amazing time when a man who wears sunglasses indoors can make millions by listing the names of cities and rhyming Kodak with Kodak. Feel #blessed.
7 New Year Clichés: Break Free, Embrace Change!
Those that everyone know.
It's 2017! You drank champagne, you wore funny glasses, and you watched the ball drop as you sang the night away with your best friends and family . What comes next you may ask? Sadly you will have to return to the real world full of work and school and paying bills. "Ah! But I have my New Year's Resolutions!"- you may say. But most of them are 100% complete cliches that you won't hold on to. Here is a list of those things you hear all around the world.
1. "I will be serious about working out"
Are you? Odds are you will get that gym membership, go for a few weeks, and completely forget about it. You will realize that autopay is taking $80 out of your account and you either need to cancel or start going again. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be in better shape, but do it at a pace that is right for you. Don't let the change in year dictate it.
2. "New year new me!"
This cliche is the most over used and most underdone. Every year we hear "New Year New Me!!", and the most that comes out of it is someone dyes their hair or gets a tattoo . Yes, these are life changing attributes to a person, and everyone should be commended for trying new things, but don't try to change you just because its a new year. Stay true to yourself.
3. "I'm going to be more outgoing!"
Being adventurous is always a great thing! Stepping out of your comfort zone is always exhilarating, but don't force yourself to do things that make you feel uncomfortable. So are you really going to go out, or will you continue to watch Netflix and go to the same restaurants. The choice is yours!
4. "I'm going to get more organized "
Trying to get organized is a great feat few of us can manage. It's always good to do a big spring cleaning, but trying to completely organize everything is trying to change how you live. I know when I try to do something like get a new planner, I either stick to it or I forget about it.
5. "I'm leaving my bad relationships in the past!"
Bad influences won't go away in your life if you wish them to stay in another year. Work hard at this one if you are going to make it one of your New Years cliches. Toxic relationships should stay in the past, but it is up to you to keep them out of your life.
6. "I'm going to party less"
Party as much as you want. There is nothing wrong of going out and having fun as long as you are safe doing it. If partying is what you enjoy doing, then that is okay. Not everyone conforms to that lifestyle, but if that is your thing there is no shame in that! Don't leave it in another year because you think you have to.
7. "I'm going to get more serious about my career/schooling"
This is the cliche that you should stick to. It's never a bad thing to be more focused on your career and school, as long as you don't lose sight of the important things. If you get serious, make sure you make time for your family, friends, and most importantly, yourself.
11 Essential Expectations for Becoming the Ultimate Cheermeister
Mastering festive expectations: tips to shine as your holiday cheermeister.
So you’ve elected yourself as this year's Holiday Cheermeister, there’s no shame in that. The holidays are your pride and joy, and you've taken on the responsibility to get everyone in the spirit. With only one week until Christmas , here are some things we expect from you, Cheermeister.
1. Counting down every second until the big day
2. Being the first to put up their Christmas decorations
3. planning all the holiday festivities for your crew, 4. forcing your holiday enthusiasm on others, 5. winning first place in every holiday sweater contest.
6. Giving the best secret Santa gifts (Puppies for everyone?)
7. Being the life of all the holiday parties
8. Getting defensive when someone says Christmas isn't the best holiday. Cheering on your friends through the last week before school vacation
10. Never missing the opportunity to rock out to Christmas's greatest hits
11. Lastly, not letting anything break your Christmas spirit!
What does santa want for christmas 5 presents on his wish list, santa is really hard to buy a gift for..
Santa Claus is the hardest self-employed freelance worker out there. The Christmas spirit of joy and peace himself reading a list of people's names and their gifts to be delivered, and all in one night is no cookie cutter task.
He should know; there's plenty of cookies to go around. Santa has his reindeer to keep him company but spreading Christmas cheer is not always what Santa wants to do for himself.
Here are five presents Santa wants for Christmas because he deserves them.
1. Gap years.
Santa gets to travel across the world but only in one night. Think of all the local hot spots and destinations he is missing out on. It is unfair that he has to deliver billions of presents while the rest of the world enjoys their vacation time.
We all could chip in and give Santa an extended holiday leave. Parents can just tell their kids he had to rush order their presents this year. And the year after that, and the year after that...
It is about time Santa got out of his boots and into some sandals. He does not do timeshares either.
2. Real food.
It was cute the first few times around, but does it have to be the same thing every year? Santa is a sweet and jolly man plenty enough on his own.
He doesn't need another candy cane, chocolate chip cookie, or glass of milk to keep the holiday cheer going. If anything, he is bound to have another sugar crash.
That's what caused the infamous Sleigh Crash of 1964. Ditch the dairy and baked goods, and give Santa a plate of your Christmas meal.
You thought Santa spent all of December up at the North Pole? He has an incredible side hustle, working grocery stores with his bell for the Salvation Army.
The worst gig of all is staging his workshop in every mall he goes to. Santa is a full-time toymaker and a part-time socialite. You know Santa is overqualified and he deserves what he is worth.
It is the season of giving, so give Santa his trillion dollar annual salary already.
4. Workshops around the world.
Why does Santa have to make all the world's gifts and toys from one workshop? Christmas magic can only to take our indomitable bearded friend so far.
He needs workshops in every country, that way he does not have to fly everywhere and everything at once. He will be closer to those who asked for gifts and spend more time out of his natural environment.
If Santa cannot stop working, give him something more and something better to work with.
5. Shorter lists.
Santa is not suggesting a decrease in population here. He just wants everyone to be nice instead of naughty. The gifts are enough to carry without that coal weighing him down.
He is also tired of hearing the reasons why you were naughty this year. It is breaking his gumdrop heart . Santa should not have to bribe you with presents or punish you with coal.
The greatest gift you can give Santa is kindness .
Santa is not that picky when it comes to gifts. Do the right thing, and he promises there will not be any coal in your stocking this year.
Christmas Love: A Heartfelt Letter to My Boyfriend
You are my favorite gift..
Merry Christmas ! Spending another Christmas with you is enough of a gift for me. This is the time for me to tell you how grateful I am for you, which I often forget it in the light of Christmas chaos.
Who would have imagined that when we met that we would mean so much to each other now. You have nudged your way into my anxious and guarded heart in the smoothest of fashions. There is no one that I would rather spend the holidays with, no one I would rather drag to the mall for holiday shopping , and no one I would rather struggle with when trying to find the "perfect" present that tells you how much I love you. I can not wait to engulf ourselves into winter activities and there is no one I would rather have pull me around on ice skates. I am taking this time to thank you for all you have done for me in 2015... you surely deserve it.
Thank you for dealing with my anxious personality.
I know it can't be easy dealing with someone who makes up unlikely scenarios in their head or cries at the slightest moment of being overwhelmed. You have been such a comfort to me, more than you could ever imagine. You constantly surprise me about how loving and caring you are.
Thank you for pumping my gas.
Thank you for always doing the little things for me, pumping my gas being a personal favorite. Whether it's bringing me Starbucks on a cold morning or scratching my head to sleep , you always go out of your way to make me happy .
Thank you for being apart of my family.
Although I think my family may possibly like you more, you recognize how important my family is to me and have been in no way short of showing them love. You are not just a part of my life, but theirs as well and that makes them incredibly happy.
Thank you for sharing your closet with me.
Well, I guess I really mean letting my throw all my clothes over your floor and leaving shoes in your closet for months at a time. Even though you already warned me that I can't do that when we move in together.
Thank you for taking care of me when I am sick.
Whether it is surgery or a case of the sniffles you are the first to surprise me with soup , a box of tissues, and some well-needed cuddles. It takes an extra special person to kiss me, well aware that you could get sick .
Thank you for being an overall great person.
I have never been more impressed with someone who is constantly concerned about others and their well-being. You are more than willing to put others before yourself and I admire and respect you for that. You constantly impress me and there is not a day that goes by that I am not thankful for you.
With more love than you could ever imagine,

Plan to visit The Heart of Darkness in Waterloo this year. It’s sure to be a shocker as this is their 20th year striking fear in the hearts of Iowans in and around Blackhawk County.
There are 13 themed fright areas to explore in this haunted complex, including Darkhold Castle, Creeper’s Bus, Claustrophobia Black Out Maze, Jack-o-Lantern Lane, 3D Killer Circus, Goblins Lair, Salem’s Coven, and Grizzly’s Chainsaw Massacre—just to name a few. There are also concessions and a live DJ on Friday and Saturday nights to help you dance out those jitters.
Wrenwood Haunt , Waterloo
(image from https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=286166857513513&set=pb.100083606024277.-2207520000&type=3 )
When: October 27-31, 5:30-10 p.m.
Cost: Free, donations accepted
Plan to get freaked out for a good cause at Wrenwood Haunt in Waterloo. This free haunted attraction is a fundraiser for the Cedar Bend Humane Society, so donations are highly encouraged.
This particular attraction is sure to bring the fear for adults with a terrifying outdoor walk-through experience, but also features a less-frightful-but-also-haunted cemetery walk-through for children. There’s also trick-or-treating with costumed characters handing out candy, so you can make a visit with the whole family and decide who’s ready for what level of fright upon arrival.
Harris Haven Haunted Funeral Home , Evansdale
(image from https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=507579568040351&set=pb.100063649356480.-2207520000&type=3 )
When: October 6-31 ( Fridays and Saturdays 7-10:30 p.m., Sundays and weeknights 7-10 p.m., Halloween Night 8-10:30 p.m.)
Harris Haven Haunted Funeral Home claims to bury the competition—see what they did there? Make your way through this frightening attraction and just hope you find your way out alive.
This year the basement of the house is open for haunting as well, so you’ll find yourself going underground one way or another.
Circle of Ash , Central City
(Image from: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=712610170906773&set=pb.100064733889085.-2207520000&type=3 )
When: Sept. 30-Oct. 29 ( Thursdays 8-10 p.m., Fridays 8 p.m.-midnight, Saturdays 7 p.m.-midnight, Sundays 7-10 p.m.)
Circle up your crew and get ready for a frightening night in Central City.
There are three different attractions to creep through at Circle of Ash: a traditional indoor-style haunted house, a walkthrough funhouse maze filled with terrorizing clowns, and a haunted forest brimming with monsters. This popular attraction in eastern Iowa gets pretty busy, so if you are limited on time, you might want to consider paying for a fast pass to help skip the lines. VIP tickets allow you to not only skip the lines but go through each attraction as many times as you’d like.
Scream Acres , Atkins
(Image from https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=803776715083356&set=pb.100063531041718.-2207520000&type=3 )
When: Oct. 6-28 ( Fridays and Saturdays 6:30-10 p.m.)
With this many acres, nobody will hear you scream.
Located within Bloomsbury Farm (by day, a not-so-scary fall theme park that’s worth an autumn visit), this haunted destination features four attractions for one admission price. There’s the Slaughterhouse, Cell Block Z, Haunted Corn Maze, and 3D Sinister Silo, making Scream Acres one of the creepiest farms in the state. Plus, there’s a beer garden for those over 21 who want to grab a drink before the haunting begins—or to help recover from the experience.
Eclypse Haunted Attractions , Iowa City

Eclypse claims to be Iowa’s most evil haunted attraction, so come prepared to face the wrath, as this park utilizes less common illusions and tricks to optimize the frightening experience. They also sell fast passes to skip the lines and season passes if you don’t get enough of a scare on your first visit.
If you are up for a truly terrifying experience, check out the Black Out Lights Out nights on Oct. 19 and 26, during which you wander through the attraction guided only by an unreliable flashlight.
Thrashers House of Terror , Mount Pleasant
(image from https://www.thrashershouseofterror.com/about/)

So get your dose of terror and support a local nonprofit organization while you go screaming into the night.

Nothing is quite so creepy as a haunted attraction in the middle of the Iowa countryside. That’s why Tormented Souls Haunt and Scream Park is particularly terrifying.
On the 22-acre site, you’ll find demons, zombies, spirits, and mayhem. It starts with a ride on the Terror Bus (truly the only way in and out) before you brave your way through the haunted maze in the woods. Haunted and creepy places in iowa.
Where is the creepiest town in Iowa?
Hands-down, Villisca is the creepiest town in Iowa. Home to one of the most notorious cold cases in the world, the Villisca Axe Murders, this tiny town of just under 1,200 is one place you don't want to visit at night or alone. Those who are brave enough, however, can actually spend the night in the house where an entire family, as well as two family friends who were staying over, were mercilessly killed in their sleep. A word of caution, though: the former crime scene is allegedly riddled with paranormal activity. Guest after guest has reported experiencing unexplained phenomena during their stay, from hearing disembodied voices to seeing full-blown apparitions. Some have even witnessed blood stains on the walls disappear right before their very eyes! Villisca definitely isn't for the faint of heart, but if you're looking to see a ghost, we can't imagine a better place.
Are there any haunted restaurants or bars in Iowa?
- Hotel Blackhawk
Most people don't know there is a haunted bar in Iowa — and it happens to be located in one of our state's oldest and most historic hotels! Hotel Blackhawk is a Davenport icon, built in 1915 and boasting over 400 guest rooms. Plenty of notable figures have stayed in the hotel, including legendary actor, Cary Grant, who tragically died in his room after becoming ill at a nearby theater. Today, hotel guests often recount experiencing things that simply cannot be explained by science, such as feeling cold spots and hearing noises that appear to have no origin. A few (un)lucky folks have even spotted the ghost of Grant wandering the halls! The hotel's on-site bar, Bix Bistro, is the perfect place to unwind with a nice glass of wine or a cocktail in between your ghost-hunting shenanigans. Just don't be surprised if the person you start chatting with mysteriously disappears a second later. Drinks aren't the only spirits you'll find here!
What are the creepiest cemeteries in Iowa?
- Oakland Cemetery
Cemeteries are quite peaceful — some would even go as far as to say they're beautiful — but there's no denying their eeriness. One of the creepiest cemeteries in Iowa is, without a doubt, Oakland Cemetery. This Iowa City graveyard dates to 1843, making it one of the oldest cemeteries in the state. It's full of fascinating history — and a ghost story — because what good is a cemetery without one? There is a statue within the cemetery, known as the Black Angel, that has become the object of an urban legend over the years. Despite its beauty, the coal-colored statue is said to strike anyone who touches it dead. While this notion has been tested (and proven false), there is an undeniably spooky energy surrounding it. If you happen to visit during winter and see the statue covered in snow, it's even more hauntingly breathtaking.

Myrtle Street fire in Sioux City caused by unattended cooking
SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - It is now known what started a fire on Sioux City’s Myrtle Street that left a family of six without a home.
Sioux City Fire Rescue (SCFR) says they’ve completed their investigation into the house fire at 2811 Myrtle Street. Investigators say the fire originated in the kitchen and was caused by cooking that was left unattended.
“Cooking is the leading cause of home fires, both locally and nationwide. Residents are urged to remain in the kitchen while cooking and remain vigilant for any overheating,” stated SCFR in a press release.
With temperatures expected to be in the negatives this weekend, fire officials are urging people to not use cooking appliances as an alternative way to heat their homes.
The Myrtle Street fire was reported at about 10:15 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 10. Two adults and four children were able to get out of the home safely before firefighters got to the scene. None of the family reported any injuries.
According to SCFR, firefighters located the family’s pet inside the home. It did not survive.
After sustaining heavy fire and smoke damage, the home was red-tagged and is considered a total loss.
SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - A family of six were displaced Wednesday morning after a fire on Myrtle Street in Sioux City.
The fire was reported at 2811 Myrtle Street around 10:15 a.m. Sioux City Fire Rescue (SCFR) says when firefighters got to the scene they saw heavy flames and smoke coming from the two-story home.
Two adults and four children were able to get out of the home safely before firefighters got to the scene. None of the family reported any injuries.
During the fire, officials say crews who had entered the home were forced to evacuate because of the building’s structural instability and deteriorating interior conditions. Eventually, the 23 fire personnel at the scene were able to get the fire under control.
SCFR says the home sustained heavy fire and smoke damage and is considered a total loss. The home has been officially red-tagged and SCFR says the American Red Cross is assisting the family.
What caused the fire is still under investigation.
