Repair or Replace a Ritchie Compass

Last time I used my boat, I noticed that the compass was no longer filled with oil. So, I'm assuming a seal or something let go. I searched for similar threads here and there was one about 6 months ago. I think my options are (1) to try a DIY repair and refill, or (2) just replace the compass. I am assuming the thing leaked and discharged because of an aged seal, but I am not familiar with the details of compasses. Just wondering if this can be a DIY fix, or should I just go new. I can get a new one here on iBoats for under $200, which is fine. There is an LED light on the original one, which may require some wire splicing if I get a new one. Based on the recent thread, it looks like having Ritchie repair the compass rivals the cost of a new one. Just wondering if these things can be easiy repaired, or if it is rocket science. :noidea: TIA for any insight :thumb:

There is a thread where a guy on the cruiser forum repaired his for about $10 and filled with mineral sprits http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/f121/replacing-fluid-in-ritchie-compass-15208.html The one on my Rinker did the same thing a couple years ago but I'm in a lake so no need for it. Can see where it could come in handy for you

Good catch, thanks

Thanks, AD :thumb: I'll see if I can diagnose & fix it myself. I imagine just filling it back up will not do the trick as there must be a seal or o-ring that caused the leak. Can't complain though. . . 21 year old compass.

My factory installed Ritchie bit the dist last year same as yours. There was a video or two in youtube of folks attempting a refill with the proper fluid which is available on Amazon and you'd need a large syringe. I didn't have time for playing around with it so just bought an exact replacement. The LED of course is on the replacement as well but the re-connection and waterproof splicing is only as difficult as the amount of room you have to work with under the helm. For me, the hardest part is that the compass is mounted on the top of the helm dash and the angle of the windshield doesn't allow a straight screwdriver so had to use a 90 degree phillips. It's about a 2 out of 10 for difficulty if you just replace.

Ned L

Unfortunately it being completely empty (I am thinking) points to the diaphragm being bad. That isn't a typical DIY repair. (It is what allows for expansion and contraction of the fluid due to temperature and barametric changes.)

I've rebuilt 3 in the past 4 years. You'll need the model number and you can order the repair kit. Google Ritchie compass parts. I think the guy is in New England. Easy to do. The trick is on filling it back up. Fill as full as possible then put in the freezer for an hour or so. Then top it off again and put in the plug. I used a glue syringe for the last part. Let warm up and no bubble...... Btw, you where right the first time. Mineral oil is too thick. You use mineral sprites to fill the globe

Getting a little off topic, but.... compasses and paper charts go hand in hand. Every one of my often-used routes is plotted on a physical chart, in addition to the electronic routing on my GPS. Proper charting of a course on paper includes the direction (magnetic bearing) and length of each leg of the route. That said, even if you know precisely where you are and where you need to go, compasses are only slightly effective in reduced visibility conditions, for the simple reason that almost nobody has their compass calibrated for the deviation (not variation- that's different) present on their particular boat. Every piece of electronic gear you mount in the vicinity of the compass, effects its accuracy. Wind and current also take you off your course line, and you won't know that by looking at the compass. For the average boater, using a compass or GPS in fog should be a last ditch effort to get someplace because you have no other choice (like a medical emergency). Unless you have radar you're much better off dropping an anchor and waiting it out. I learned how to use my compass when I took the US Power Squadron's 'Seamanship' and 'Piloting' courses. However, you need to be a member to have access to the advanced courses. The Seamanship course is, IMO, the best all-around course they offer for recreational boaters.

Old Ironmaker said: I value your opinion and am a bit confused when you say " I'm on a lake so no need for it." I am trying to learn to use a compass properly on the water and no one yet has been able to explain it in layman's terms, either that or all the guys I know with compasses haven't a clue what they are looking at . So I'm very interested in knowing what you mean by that? I am on the north shore of Lake Erie. We got into the worse fog I have ever seen a few years back, I'm talking stew not soup. The Marina operator had to go out and bring in a boat. No idea how he found him to this day. Worse he ever saw in 50 years on Erie. Had I not had my GPS we could have ended up on the rocks. If not for the GPS I don't know what I would have done. Take a North heading and crash on the 5 mile wide shoreline of rock or head south east and listen for lake freighters. Click to expand...

Until 2001all Ritchie compasses (see exception) were filled with Odorless Mineral Spirits (100% Paraffin based). Ritchie now uses a fluid called Isopar L Some old style Flat Top Compasses used a mix of denatured alcohol and water. This process was stopped in the 1960s. If you have a Flat Top Compass, it is recommended that you test the fluid to see if it is Odorless Mineral Spirits or an alcohol/water mix. If you ever need to refill or top off the fluid in your Ritchie compass, the manufacturer recommends Isopar L, an odorless, colorless, refined synthetic fluid. Its low viscosity promotes quick swinging. Won't freeze or boil off at temperatures from -40? to 200? F., and it may be mixed with the mineral oil already in compasses made before 2001

I took that compass out of the boat . . . It is a Ritchie HF-73-T. I disassembled it . . the diaphragm looked to be intact and held fluid. I'm thinking the o-ring over the lens started to leak. Anyway, rather than futz with it, I ordered a new one (HF-743) here on iBoats :thumb: It seems that you need an adapter ring to mount the new ones in an opening for the one ones.

Plastimo Compass repairs

Does anyone know if it is possible to refurbish Plastimo compasses? I can't seem to get onto their website for some reason. I recently scored an older bulkhead-mount, two-way-view which is labelled Contest Classe B No. 346 SN. The outer convex lens is badly UV affected, and there is a large air-bubble, which I assume means a seal has leaked somewhere... Can they be DIY repaired or only by 'authorised agents' at great expense?

gonzo

gonzo Senior Member

You will need a new lens, seals, etc. The company won't refurbish them since a new one would be cheaper.

hoytedow

The lens can probably be improved with the same stuff they sell at the auto parts store for restoring headlight lenses. I believe you wet sand it then apply a clear liquid coating of some sort. Seal might be a large o-ring, possibly available at a plumbing supply house. Not sure.

Yes ive stripped them down and cleaned them out I have ground the needle to a point because mine was sticking. I then refilled with the clearest oil you can get--it does'nt matter what oil but thin . I used baby oil lotion. Its surprising how dirty it is. The card may be dirty but if its UV affected I dont know what you can do. I dont know if mine was Plastimo . They are generally too cheap to mess a round with. But when it was done it worked fine. The seal is a rubber O ring. If the plastic is faded dump it. I use GPS for compass readings.
I keep a compass because GPS could be compromised.
Well, I strpped it down to see if it was worth attempting reapirs, but the outer lens, apart from being badly yellowed and slightly crazed from sunlight, was also badly stained and had several cracks, so I have decided to buy a new one after all. I then pulled it apart to ensure myself that this was not a good idea, and I was right. The Contest is two convex lenses joined by a rubber/plastic bellows/seal whic appears to be glued to the two halves with something like super-glue - it produced that same crystallization on the plastic lenses. Unfortunately I also broke the post that holds the gyro mechanism, so the inner lens is also buggered - doh - but if anyone wants the card, gyro, inner lens or an intact seal to replace a damaged one, let me know via PM. Having said that, I suspect you'll never get it to seal again properly, so it will probably be a waste of time and effort. Plastimo is correct when they respond that these units are not designed to be repaired. But as they leave a screw for re-filling, presumably that is a 'service' that is allowable. However, in order to do so, you need to know what fluid is in the compass. In the course of my research I discovered that a light mineral oil product named Varsol made by Exxon was once used widely to fill compasses. Exxons website states that this has been superceded by Exxsol, but when I inquired for a supplier via their website form, the 'translated from chinese' reply was 'so sorry, no longer imported to Asia-Pacific region'.... So any of you Yanks or Canuks out there want to try and chase Exxon on home turf and see what you can come up with? I'm sure their are loads of wannabe DIY compass repairers who would be fascinated by the results, as the topic of 'what to fill a compass with' is one widely discussed in other forums. Some suggestions include, solvents, baby oil, isopropyl alcohol, vodka, gin and a mixture of water and alcohol. But far and away the most sensible answer is that pre-war compasses often used alcohol, but more recently either mineral oil (eg: Varsol, kerosene or similar) and more recently still, a neutral silicone-based fluid seem to be the most correct responses. So if anyone can find out anything about supplies of Exxsol...???

I have found that oil is too thick, especially when its cold. The card in the compass can not turn. The fluid that works is odorless mineral spirits. The rubber bellows in the compass bottom allows the fluid to expand and contract keeping the pressure from cracking the plastic dome. However with the wrong fluid and wrong rubber, you will find compass fluids either dry out the rubber bellows or leach color out of black rubber parts into the fluid. A Ritchie compass is rebuildable. I had to repair mine and was able to order new rubber seals. That place also sells compass fluid. That richie has turned out well for years. Another make I repaired, the fluid has turned slightly yellow-green. I used odorless mineral spirits in both. A trick to remove dissolved air in the compass when you refill is put them in the freezer. Fluid will shrink and the dissolved air is forced out. My Ritchie source for parts was Island Marine Instrument Co INC. 2214 Broadway Everett, WA 98201-2322 888-539-2757 My total cost to rebuild the Richie was $20
Varsol is a trade name for mineral spirits/paint thinner.
Can you buy clear untinted ethylene glycol? http://www.sbioinformatics.com/design_thesis/Ethylene_Glycol/Ethyleneglycol_Properties&uses.pdf Ethylene glycol is a clear, colorless, odorless, liquid with a sweet taste. It is hygroscopic and completely miscible with many polar solvents such as water, alcohols, glycol ethers, and acetone. Its solubility is low however, in nonpolar solvents, such as benzene, toluene, dichloroethane, and chloroform. Following are some of the physical properties of ethylene glycol Click to expand...
Yes you can. Most compasses are built for either alcohol or mineral spirits and their dampers calibrated for those densities. What advantages would glycol have?
Where can you buy it? With Ethylene Glycol you can dilute it with water if it was too thick. Advantage might be price and likely that one compass that discolored the fluid would have stayed clear using glycol.
You can buy mineral spirits at any hardware store. Many supermarkets have it too.
Yeah, the stuff that came out of my Plastimo was definitely mineral spirits of some kind, but it was far from 'neutral' in odour - rather pungent in fact. Kinda cross between kerosene and thinners..... Anyone in USA willing to suss out the supply situation on Exxsol?
Odorless mineral spirits has less volatile components so this means when it heats and cools, there will be less pressure inside the compass. It also is expensive maybe $10 per gallon. Still lot cheaper than something branded genuine compass fluid. Where could you buy Ethylene glycol without the pigments or the bitterant added?

Danforth Constellation Compass

  • Add to quote

Does anyone know of a service center that would service this compass. When I purchased the boat it had a large bubble. Web site (Rule) indicates non in USA...Was wondering if there is a generic place anyone is aware of.

Try this... Connecticut Compass Service, http://www.ctcompass.com/

Rule Industries currently has a location in Gloucester, MA. Telephone # is 978-281-0440. I returned a Danforth Constellation to Rule about five years. I don't remember the details. I don't even remember if this is the location to which I sent it, but they were quick, the price seemed fair, and the compass is still working fine.

Thanks I will try both, I had emailed Rule and did not get an answer but will try the phone #

Re: Previous request for danforth compass service To Silmaril, Thanks for your suggestion of Conn Compass Service. They are a first rate company with quick response and service. I finally got in touch with Rule who has bought out Danforth and was told I needed to buy a new one as they probably did not have parts. Very Curt attitude. The guy at Conn Compass is repairing, rewiring, replacing glass and other things. Quote was under $200. The compass is about a $1000 compass.

Danforth constellation Compass Hello. I just joined this site. I have purchased a 27 foot Columbia sailboat. It has a Danforth constellation binnacle compass on it. Problem is the shroud has several dents in it and I need to take it apart to repair. I can't seem to get the two halfs apart. I have pulled them to where they have separated about a 1/4 inch and that's about as far as it will go. Is there some trick to removing the hood slider. Thanks

sailboat compass repair

Just curious, how did the shroud put dents in a binnacle compass, which is likely mounted in the cockpit??? Also, you might be better off posting this as a separate thread, since it doesn't have much to do with the OP other than type of compass. I would also recommend you read the POST in my signature to help you get the most out of sailnet. Welcome to the asylum.

Dawg...I think he is talking about the metal shroud for the compass that protects it from the elements. Don't have the answer myself. Welcome aboard weephee!

Danforth Compass Sorry. I will post again as new . The compass is located on the pinnacle which is located at the back of the boat. It is the shroud of the compass that has the dent. Thanks

If you look to either side of the shroud on the inside you will see 2 screws that will release it. Message me and I will send you breakdown diagram of compass. Hope this isn't to late!

The oraginal post was from 2006... I'm sure he has moved on

Compass Repair Before you send it anywhere, Turn It Upside Down, and quickley return upright and see what happens to the bubble. These compass models are filled with Purified Mineral Spirits while the the compass is upside down. This fills the space under the card with fluid. When turned upside down the bubble will be trapped under the compass card, replacing the fluid there now. If any of the nylon screws get messed up, you can find replacements at Automotive Stores nuts and bolts section and look for nylon. If turning upside down doesn't work it means you will have to remove one of the nylon screws(Gently)and fill with the mineral spirits. If I could type faster I would relate the story of how I know you can find replacement screws at auto stores!

I bought a new globe, o-ring and oil for my Danforth Constellation from Viking Instruments.

I had mine rebuilt by Viking, I'm happy with it.

Anyone have a compass repair person in NY, NJ CT. area? Mine has become very cloudy . Ernie

Tim R.

Ernie, Viking Optics is in MA. and does a great job. Ship your compass to them and they will refurbish and upgrade it. http://www.vikingoptics.com/compassrepair.html

Ernie ... have you thought of doing a rebuild yourself? Last year I replaced a cracked globe on my Ritchie and put in a new gasket and diaphragm ... worked great ... catch you down in Nyack in the summer! (do you sail out of the Nyack Yacht Club?)

Bryce22345

If it's a Ritchie send it directly to them in Pembroke MA. had my navigator done by them a couple of years ago. charge was just over $100 and basically got a like new compass in return. they replaced everything except the original housing.

CalebD

Hi Ernie, Can the compass fluid be drained and replaced? Or is the globe itself getting cloudy? Looking forward to meeting your O'Day 25'. Caleb D.

Thanks everyone for your info. Yes I do sail out of Nyack Boat Club (as Caleb knows) and the compass is cloudy. The boats currently in the Chesapeake and I need the compass for the trip to NY. But I will take quick look to see if I can take it apart without doing further damage.

Second opinion... Viking rebuilt my compass last summer. Had a cracked globe. Did a great job at a reasonable price with a quick turn-around. Very satisfied with the result.

just got off the phone with Viking.....i have a globe master sp5 and was quoted $245.00 referb ...including a new globe....they will also sell the oil and o ring if that is all you need......they were most helpful in info department....based on the conversation i will be buying the oil and o ring for now and see how that goes....but after talking to them if i need further help i will be sending it to them....very nice folks..... regards woody

Also consider the LED upgrade. I find that the incandescent bulb usually gives out the day before you need it for some night sailing.

You May Want to Save Your Time ................... .............. and get it professionally repaired. I had my Ritchie repaired a few years ago by a very knowledgeable company who explained the whole process of how the oil is replaced so there are no bubbles in it after years of service. Seems that after the oil is replaced in the globe, the whole assembly is then subjected to very high vacuum for 24 hours to remove any dissolved air in the oil. The globe is then sealed off. There is a diaphragm (which eventually leaks years down the road and causes the original problem all over again) which absorbs thermal expansion and contraction.

Thumbs of for Viking We spoke with Viking before sending our compass, they gave us a quote on the phone. Once they received the compass they called and confirmed the quote and offered the LED upgrade which we did. They returned it to us right on time and it looked like a new compass. All for less than than $200.00.

check the bottom of it and all around real good for hairline cracks. Thats what mine had, tho I havent bought a new one yet, my boat finds its own way to the moot just fine without me.

sailboat compass repair

I took the compass apart last night, took the dome off first because it was foggy and it cleaned right up. Flipped it over and unscrewed the base, found the diaphragm to be old, brittle, and cracked (compass is from 1988...go figure). I called up Ritchie Navigation today and ordered a new diaphragm. $10 for the diaphragm and $2 to mail it. Once it arrives it should take less than five minutes to install it and then all I have to do is refill the compass with mineral spirits or compass fluid. Sure beats buying a new compass. I looked up the equivalent to the model compass I have and it is $180 at West Marine.

i tried mineral oil after looking up what other people did online, then i found my leak.

sailboat compass repair

found out today that one of my compasses (a Saturn) has a bubble. Brought it home to fix it, but I can't figure out how to get it open! Can't find a plug anywhere on it. There is a diaphram, but it's under (or really over) the compensating magnets and it seems like that mechanism (the plastic holding the compensating magnets) is glued on. Any suggestions??

Russia Says Strikes Destroy Several Ukrainian Fighter Jets

sailboat compass repair

Russia’s Defense Ministry  said Tuesday its missile strike on an airfield in central Ukraine has destroyed and damaged seven Ukrainian fighter jets.

“As a result of the Russian army’s strike, five active Su-27 multi-purpose fighters were destroyed and two under repair were damaged,” the military said on Telegram.

Undated aerial footage accompanying its short statement showed an explosion and smoke rising from an airfield.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said it had struck the Myrhorod airfield in Ukraine’s Poltava region.

Ukraine’s former Air Force speaker Yuriy Ihnat confirmed the strike on Myrhorod, but accused the Russian military of exaggerating the extent of the damage.

“There are losses, but not at all like the enemy claims because they always do this since the beginning of the invasion,” Ihnat wrote on Facebook shortly after midnight.

Ihnat told Reuters that Russian reconnaissance drones helped conduct the strike on Myrhorod and present a “very serious threat.”

“It flies and reports everything in real-time, and then Iskander arrives in a couple of minutes. It is obvious,” he was quoted as saying.

Russia announced its strike on a Ukrainian airfield as Kyiv readies to receive the initial batches of U.S.-made F-16 jets from Europe. Moscow has threatened to destroy the Western warplanes.

  2. compass repair

A good compass repair place will test the tolerances in the casings and will conduct a pressure test over a few days to insure against leaks. The thing is that once you replace the glass because it was cracked or scratched, the magnetic dial because the marks had faded and then the casings you might as well purchase a new one.

  3. AquaMeter Compass Repair

The Aquameter Gemini is no longer made - Aquameter was sold to Danforth some years ago. I could have purchased a whole new compass and matching binnacle mount but the prices range from $460 for a Ritchie Navigator to $770 for a Danforth Constellation (which is the descendant of the Aquameter Gemini). Seeing as that amount of coin will buy a lot ...

  4. Refilling Marine Compass

Refilling Marine Compass. One of the 2 mounted compasses on our boat has lost most of its liquid damping over the years and, before having to replace the unit, we thought we might have a go at refilling it. 5. Repair or Replace a Ritchie Compass

I had the boat out today . . . the bay was very flat, so it made for a decent opportunity to install the new compass. Took a lot longer than I was planning (2 hours vs. 30 mins), but it is done. The wiring for the panel lights was a bit tricky to get at and splice, which took a lot of time.

A trick to remove dissolved air in the compass when you refill is put them in the freezer. Fluid will shrink and the dissolved air is forced out. My Ritchie source for parts was. I have a 20 year old Ritchie flush mount binnacle compass that has, in the last couple of months, developed a bubble which is growing. Anyone know of a compass repair person or company, close to the Westchester or Rockland County New York area?. I don't want to ship it. Some one close to the Hudson River would be great. NY, NJ, or Connecticut would be OK. The compass glass seems to be fogged. Thanks Ernie

  12. Anyone replaced their compass light with LED?

OK, I have the Ritchie compass. I do recall years ago having a problem (before LEDs), opening it up, verifying it was wired correctly, taking it to West Marine, seeing they had the same ones, and then trying it on a battery there, reversing the leads, seeing it worked, and just saying screw it and installed it backwards cuz it worked that way.

  13. Compass repair, replace?

If so, it's probably (maybe) going to be less expensive. I don't think an instrument repair shop will be able to replace a globe and gasket, clean and refill for less than $100. A $200 compass that is on in years is probably a candidate for replacement. OTOH, a $1,500 - $2,500 compass wouild be.
