The Cavalier 28 Cruiser Racer

The Cavalier 28 Cruiser Racer

Race or cruise? Handicap or scratch? There is one boat design frequently seen on Sydney Harbour that is superbly suited to all of these!

The Cavalier 28 was, from its inception in the early 80s, as the New Zealand Davidson 28, designed for both racing and cruising. As you would expect of a boat designed by Laurie Davidson, of America’s Cup fame, her racing credentials are outstanding. A Cav 28 has all the controls you need to coax her to perform well above what her length might lead you to believe. At the same time, she has generous facilities for overnight stays, sporting plenty of headroom, stove, toilet, table and multiple bunks (how many depends on how young you feel). A crew of two is all that is needed for a lazy afternoon cruise around the harbour under only a heady which moves her along just nicely.

Add to that the fact that you can race fortnightly from September to Easter in a one design fleet second only in size to the Etchells on Sydney Harbour. In two races last season, from a scratch start, after a two hour race, all seven boats had finished within 2-3 minutes of each other – how good is that! For those who are new to the class and still prising the best from their crew and their craft we also run a PHS handicap result. Being a one design fleet, however, means that duking it out for 4th or 5th place can be just as close and exciting as taking the gun. It is most gratifying to find yourself gradually working your way up through the scratch results sheet as you and your crew (total of around five) work out what each control does. Then you really know how well you are racing!

You will find other skippers generous with their racing advice over a beer after the finish.

There is nothing better than racing in a close fleet. The SASC program includes about 14 races and, in addition, we run the State Championships in March as part of the Sydney Harbour Regatta.

Class rules are quite relaxed and exist both to even the playing field and keep costs down. No exotic sail materials are allowed and sail replacements are economical and at most annual. Our yearly dinner and prize-giving attracts 50 to 60 people and we have a very active website with plenty of information both about the design and racing tips aplenty.

Skippers regularly use the excellent and free RaceQs app which records your race and then allows a full 3D replay of events so you can see just where you won (or lost) the race. Check our website for plenty of past races and examples of its use.

If you currently sail a boat of similar size and vintage and are interested in racing in a one design fleet, you could do a lot worse than get yourself into a Cav 28. They are often available and definitely at the budget end of the price range for their size and performance. You’ll gain a lady that loves both to cruise and race and you know how hard they are to come by. We have two advertised for sale on our website now and you’ll also find others at the regular boat sales sites. We would love you to join us!

Review of Cavalier 28

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The boat equipped with a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

The Cavalier 28 is equipped with a fin keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a long keel.

The boat can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.60 - 1.70 meter (5.25 - 5.55 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

The boat is typically equipped with an inboard Bukh diesel engine.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Cavalier 28 is 1.78, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.7 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Cavalier 28 is about 143 kg/cm, alternatively 806 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 143 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 806 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

What is SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio)?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 25m 2 (269 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

Cavalier Yachts

1980 Cavalier Yachts was created as a partnership between Peter Smith and John Salthouse, trading as Salthouse Custom Glass Boats Ltd, later changed to Custom Glass Boats Ltd. They initially produced the successful Cavalier 32 as well as the Coronet Trailer Sailer and the Corsair 36 launch. Salthouse and Smith amicably parted company with Smith taking the Cavalier Yachts half of the business. Smith introduced two new partners, Pat Sullivan as administrator and accountant, and Grant Bennet as floor and production manager. At its peak, Cavalier Yachts had eleven designs in simultaneous production, and was the largest production boatbuilder in the southern hemisphere.

.

From the outside they look like lovely little that should sail well.

The big sister cav 32's have got a great reputation, a fair few have circumnavigated. I saw a cav 32 in hobart that had rounded cape horn, his and kept going until he got here. He got some more and then headed to NZ, still with the jury rig up... It must have been well built.
All the best
19-03-2013, 00:56

Their Cav 26 from sailed it from NZ to .
They were making 120 miles a day and more some days
Which is encouraging as I have 800 miles to take it home.
That's is if we can make the deal sweet enough. Here's hoping

. It should be a fun trip bringing her down to Hobart. Looks like she has some good , is the staying with the boat?

Looks like she is the design rather than the more rounded salthouse ones you see in ? not sure whats going on there but she is very similar in shape to my 1979 40 Two tonner.

I guess she won't be real quick surfing downwind but I am very pleased with how my big sister version and handles as long as you get the main off early downwind and don't do stupid things with kites...

For some info on similar designs see and . Peterson pretty much scaled up the pintails from his ganbere design, tweaking each design slightly. By 1979 (my area) the sterns were just slightly wider and the forefoot slightly shallower. Also look up Greyhawk, a peterson 34, an interesting site.

Here's some Pics of my Underwater, you can see the resemblance.

S# first appeared (that we know of) in TellTales, April 1988, "On a Scale of One to Ten" by A.P. Brooks . The equation incorporates SA/Disp (100% fore triangle) and Disp/length ratios to create a guide to probable boat performance vs. other boats of comparable size. For boats of the same length, generally the higher the S#, the lower the PHRF.
