Biography [ ]

Phantom pain incident [ ], hospital raid [ ].

An elite XOF assassin who took orders directly from Skull Face , Quiet was sent to kill Big Boss, who was going by the name "Ahab." During the hospital raid on March 11, 1984, she had her sights on him and killed the nurse and the doctor in attendance at the hospital during the raid. She told her superior that she hadn't killed her target yet as "the man in the next bed [Ishmael] had seen [her] face." She then tried to kill Ahab, only for Ishmael to fight her off by jumping on her back mere seconds before she could pull the trigger. After fighting Ishmael off and attempting to strangle Ahab, she was pelted with a bottle of medical grade ethanol, allowing Ishmael to light her on fire. However, despite being immolated, she still proved to be determined to try and kill Ahab, resulting in her being doused with another set of chemicals that refueled the fire to an unbearable degree and caused her to fall out of a nearby window.

Ultimately, she survived, although with severe enough injuries to force herself to be infected with a mutant strain of the "the one that covers" parasites used to create the Parasite Unit which managed to repair most of her physical damage, grant her superhuman speed, perception, durability, longevity, phasing and invisibility. It also allowed her to breathe through her skin and take in nutrients via photosynthesis or small showers, effectively removing the need for food, drinking or breathing.

Cloaked in Silence [ ]

In 1984, Skull Face had Quiet deployed to Afghanistan where she was tasked with eliminating Soviet officers who were against the development of Metal Gear Sahelanthropus . She eventually caught sight of Venom Snake and proceeded to open fire on him, initiating a duel. Although Kazuhira Miller wanted her dead due to being a Cipher agent, Venom Snake, after defeating her in the duel, ultimately decided to apprehend her and bring her back to Mother Base at Ocelot 's suggestion.

During the flight back to Mother Base, Quiet uncuffed herself and seemingly escaped from the chopper, although she secretly stayed invisible while still inside the helicopter. Before arriving at Mother Base, the chopper came under attack by a pursuing fighter jet; Quiet then revealed herself, took aim, and fired a single sniper round through the closed cockpit of the enemy aircraft, killing the pilot and saving Venom Snake's life in the process.

Despite this heroic act, Miller still didn't trust her, and gave orders to prevent a landing if Quiet was still on board. However, she effectively surrendered herself into Diamond Dogs custody. Despite Miller's insistence that they kill her due to her being too much of a liability, Ocelot and Venom Snake instead decided to lock her up. [2] Venom Snake agreed that she might have to be killed if she proved to be too much of a threat to Diamond Dogs' existence, adding that he would be the one to "pull the trigger" should that situation ever arise.

A member of Diamond Dogs [ ]

While Miller was extremely prejudiced against her, Ocelot was willing to let her prove her worth. Because she was unable to speak English, she could not communicate with any of Diamond Dog personnel. Messages from her often had to be conveyed through actions. During her days at Mother Base, she was cooperative with anything Diamond Dogs requested of her; the only exception was that she refused to wear clothes, and anyone who tried to put clothes on her ended up injured to the point of needing breathing tubes. Ocelot purposely locked her in a cell with a lock which he described as "a joke" to bait her into revealing her motives.

This proved to be pointless as she changed her mind about wiping out Diamond Dogs. Ocelot later suggested Snake take her along on missions to form a bond, hoping it would make her break her silence as she refused any form of communication, even writing. Later on, she snuck out of her cell to accompany Venom Snake on a mission, only to be caught by Miller, who was dead set against the idea. Ocelot, however, decided she could prove extremely useful in the field.

Some time later, Quiet attacked a Diamond Dog personnel for unknown reasons, since she couldn't communicate as to why. Two operatives came to the personnel's aid only to be beaten down by her. Venom Snake intervened and subdued her, with the help of Ocelot, who gave her a sedative. She was taken back to her cell, with Venom Snake telling Ocelot that if she were attempt to escape again, "there [wouldn't] be a third [time]." It was later revealed that she attacked the man in question because he was infected with the Kikongo strain of the vocal cord parasite . After destroying and recovering Metal Gear Sahelanthropus, Quiet stood next to Miller during his speech, alongside the other leading members, Venom Snake and Ocelot.

At some point, she also ended up retrieving a treasured item of the Mbele Squad , a necklace that had formerly belonged to their leader, Shabani , after it had ended up discarded into a vat of chlorine disinfectant (it was implied that Eli had discarded the necklace), although at the cost of having significant portions of her skin burned from exposure to the gas.

Hooded quiet 1

Quiet during her interrogation.

After undergoing an MRI, it was revealed that Quiet was the assassin who had been sent to kill Snake after he awoke in Cyprus, as they found a Star-of-Bethlehem petal inside the burnt remains of her own lungs. The medical team also discovered that she had a strain of the vocal cord parasite, and the only person who could have applied the strain which had replaced her skin and internal organs, other than Code Talker , was Skull Face. Miller demanded that she be executed, but Ocelot calmed him down, pointing out that if she had been sent to kill them all, she would have done so already. Ocelot also stated that she worked for Venom Snake, as he speculated that she was in love with the legend. At this observation, Quiet merely watched Venom Snake and did not indicate denial.

Venom Snake concurred with Ocelot, much to Miller's chagrin. He deduced that she must have decided not to speak, or even write, English in order to avoid infecting Mother Base with the strain of the parasite inside her. He then freed Quiet from her restraints. After the three men left, Code Talker approached her and spoke to her in Navajo. Replying back in Navajo, Quiet revealed that Skull Face intended to use her as his ace in the hole against Venom Snake and his army by having herself be captured so that she could be taken to Mother Base to infect everyone with the parasite and she had been given the English strain. Explaining this to Code Talker, Quiet declared fiercely that she would never speak English again and risk another pandemic.

A Quiet Exit [ ]

Quietexit

Quiet disappearing to spare Diamond Dogs from another Parasite Outbreak.

After a second parasite outbreak occurred on Mother Base, this time due to a mutation of the parasites within the previously infected personnel, Quiet believed she could be a risk despite keeping silent and left Diamond Dogs. She later went MIA in Afghanistan and was captured by Soviet forces. She was forcibly clothed when taken prisoner, which slowly suffocated her and removed her abilities. She tried to escape but was caught and nearly drowned by one of her captors, who then attempted to rape her, removing the pants they put on her.

Now able to breathe once more and her abilities restored by the water, Quiet retaliated, mutilating and slaughtering him and the other soldiers. Venom Snake had been trying to track her down to take her back to Mother Base, arriving just in time to catch the final moments of her escape. Venom intended to free her but Quiet disposed of the soldiers herself, returning with weapons for herself and Venom Snake. The two then worked together to take down a massive tank unit that had arrived in response to Quiet's escape. Unfortunately, she was badly injured by a tank round and knocked unconscious.

Venom Snake attempted to carry her out of harm's way through a fearsome sandstorm. He protected her and prevented Quiet from alerting a nearby convoy of their presence when she regained consciousness. Along the way, while hiding from the overwhelming number of enemies on their tail, he was bitten by a cobra, causing him to lose consciousness, both of them now blacked out and resting behind a rock. Thanks to the sandstorm, they were able to remain hidden and the convoy and patrolling troops moved on. Quiet woke up first when she heard Pequod attempting to contact Venom Snake through his radio, explaining that he wouldn't be able stay at the LZ much longer due to near-zero visibility in the sandstorm. Quiet replied in Navajo, which Pequod didn't understand and thought was just a radio problem. Thus, Quiet had no choice but to reply in English, much to Pequod's surprise, and guide the chopper to their location.

Eventually, Venom Snake was given an antivenom and regained consciousness, but Quiet was nowhere to be found. He went to search for her by tracking her footprints, only finding a cassette tape hanging from a tree branch. He put the tape into his iDroid and began to listen:

Afterwards, Code Talker contacted Venom Snake to summarize Quiet's actions and inquired as to why she did not release the parasites on Mother Base. Code Talker stated that "We [wouldn't] hear it from her."

Personality and traits [ ]

Quiet, as an XOF operative, was an extremely efficient and ruthless individual, viciously murdering two innocent hospital personnel without hesitation or remorse. She was also very dedicated to her job and was willing to do anything to get her mission done, taking the horrific pain of being lit completely aflame for several seconds before finally succumbing to the agony. She also fought as relentless as she could, even attempting suicide, when Venom Snake attempted to capture her. She was also able to withstand continued torture while barely making a sound.

However, she was also quite impulsive, emotive and arrogant. She underestimated her adversaries like Ishmael and Venom Snake, leading to her defeat. She had a tendency to make quick decisions without pondering about the consequences, usually leading her in making bad choices like taking her time to choke Venom Snake out of rage instead of quickly kill him with her knife or jumping into chlorine just to get a child's memento.

Her arrogance can be seen as she use a laser sight during the battle with Venom to mock him, while also humming, unbeknownst to her that despite being effective psychological warfare tactics, these would eventually backfire as Venom would have used them to gain an advantage to fight her.

However, the more time Quiet spent at Mother Base, the more she began to change into a more caring and moral individual. After her capture, she was mostly indifferent and apathetic towards her situation but took an interest in Snake. After developing her bond with Snake while serving as a combat buddy, she developed feelings for him, and in turn became a more benevolent person. Her examples of humanity and compassion included playing with Snake in the rain, lighting Snake's cigar for him for his birthday, staring at him affectionately in the ACC, and even risking her life to save a child's memento.

Regardless, Quiet still had the capability of being a cruel person if she believed it appropriate, attacking two Diamond Dog soldiers, the first for trying to clothe her, the second for being infected with a vocal cord parasite. She was also perfectly willing to kill anyone on Snake's command, and savagely massacred an entire squad of enemies after one of them attempted to rape her after nearly drowning her.

Abilities [ ]

METAL GEAR SOLID V THE PHANTOM PAIN 20150924013041

Quiet's medical file, revealing the extent of her injuries.

Before undergoing parasite treatment, Quiet was shown to be a highly skilled combatant and assassin, as she was shown to kill her foes with extreme efficiency and deadly precision. This was best demonstrated with her killing the doctor and nurse without even alerting them beforehand. She possessed huge physical strength, as she was capable of lifting both the doctor and the nurse while using a garrote as well as overpowering Ishmael with minimal effort and being able to throw him away. She demonstrated good knife throwing skills, as she hit Ismael in the shoulder, with the intention of finishing him later. She was also demonstrated to have a strong sense of willpower, as after being set alight by Ishmael, she still tried to continue on to fulfill her mission of killing Venom Snake. It was only when the flames were further fueled that she was overwhelmed by the pain and fell out a window, while beforehand she was unfazed by any of Ishmael's attacks.

After undergoing the parasite treatment, the language of the parasite being English, Quiet developed a large quantity of new superhuman abilities while black markings appeared on her skin, primarily around her eyes. These blotchy markings could vanish and reappear either at will or at a time where she was using her powers and as a response to insults, intense dangers or near death. Similar markings appeared on Code Talker, notably when Quiet first spoke to him in Navajo, his native language.

The mutant strain of the Parasite Unit "the one that covers" parasite that she had in her skin as well as her vocal cords gave very similar abilities to those of the Parasite Unit itself, such as enhanced strength, mobility and speed in exchange for nourishing the parasite. She also had inhuman levels of resilience, tolerance, stamina, durability and a certain degree of cellular regeneration common among the Skulls, allowing her to survive gunfire and explosions unless she suffered repeated injury or was directly hit more than once. Her durability was such that she was able to survive a several foot drop, which was best demonstrated upon her arrival on Mother Base, where, due to Miller blocking off Pequod's heliport to ensure Quiet can't set foot on Mother Base, she simply jumps out and then lands behind the soldiers, causing a slight quake upon landing without any injuries, however in FOBs she dies if she fall from a much lower altitude. She also had slightly less resilience compared to the Skulls as two shots to the head could kill her. Also, her abilities were dependent on her being exposed to water and direct sunlight, the latter of which allowed her to recover almost instantly, even from suffocation. Her own strain also gave the ability to camouflage not only her skin, but also phase in and out of visible spectra, as her clothes can also appear invisible. She could also apparently use some limited form of intangibility, allowing her to escape from restraints while her powers were active. This appeared to be the parasites manipulating her density, mass, or state of matter, allowing her to become partly gaseous. This particular trait was common among the Skulls, no matter the type, and it seemed to allow them to move at greater speeds that humanly possible. Her visual acuity was such that she could spot individual blades on a helicopter when they were at full speed, which could combine with her speed to allow her to even shoot in between them. Ocelot also remarked on her depth perception, saying that both of her eyes were "master eyes" in terms of focusing on a target, or multiple targets. Her strain left her mind intact, rendering her far more effective and deadly than the Parasite Unit themselves.

Due to her injuries, the parasites compensated for her burned epidermis, giving her the ability to "breathe" through her skin rather than her lungs, negating any problems that could come from sway that could be the result of breathing too much while sniping, but also requiring her to wear as little clothes as possible, as covering her skin would suffocate her. While she is wearing a prisoner uniform in Mission 45, she is weakened and she appear pale, sick and dying, with her eyes being bloodshed and her lips have a violet color. However she can still breathing from the skin of the head and her cleavage, and she drowns only when submerged as all her skin don't have any means to gain oxygen.

Although submerging her in water could suffocate her like normal humans, exposure to direct sunlight or air would immediately resuscitate her. As additional aid, the parasites compensated for the digestive organs she lost from her burns, enabling her to "drink" through her skin when showering so long as she did not move too much while in fresh water (saltwater damaging her instead), as well as receiving carbohydrates through photosynthesis, much like The End . She also gained a superhuman perception of space, being able to accurately shoot an unguided bullet with pinpoint accuracy to kill a fighter jet pilot at a great distance and hit him in the head, compensating for bullet drop and wind speed while both the jet and the helicopter she was in were moving at mach speed and taking evasive action, respectively. She later demonstrated this ability to Diamond Dogs when she managed to shoot bullets from a revolver supplied to her by Ocelot through one of their chopper's rotor blades and having the bullet pass through the rotor blades while they were moving, when the latter tried to convince Miller to let her join Big Boss in a mission.

This came at a cost, however; the mutant strain had been implanted with Skull Face's directive to become a lethal contagious form should she ever attempt to communicate in English, and the contagious form would force her to carry out her mission of killing Big Boss regardless of her wishes. In fact, she had the only example of English mating pairs of vocal cord parasites to be carried by a person until Eli infected his island.

Gameplay [ ]

Boss battle [ ].

Quiet is a deadly crack-shot who can scale small buildings in a single jump; she is more than a match for Big Boss, and defeating Quiet can be a bit of a challenge for an unprepared player. As with most snipers, simply staying behind cover is your best defense. Crawling through tall grass is less effective than against other humans, but serviceable as a last resort.

Quiet does several things that give her position away. The lens of her rifle reflects sunlight. Her gun is equipped with a laser sight, further marking her location. Despite being mute she constantly hums to herself. The player can mark her with binoculars or a sniper scope (or DD , on a repeat playthrough) revealing her health bar and her stamina bar; though if she moves, the marker disappears. Quiet herself is invisible while moving, but when she jumps she creates a black Skulls trail, and as she sprints she kicks up dirt, helping the player track her next destination. Lastly, she will occasionally decide to bathe in the nearby river or a pool in the ruins; this will create a rainbow directly on her location and leaves her wide open to any attack from the player.

Despite her intimidating presence, Quiet is not omniscient. She does not automatically know where Snake is at all times, and with a quick trigger finger the player can get a round off against Quiet before she can do the same. If she does spot Snake, the player only has a brief window to act before she fires. If the player starts to close the distance Quiet can be tricked with a thrown empty magazine -- she will fire at the distraction, giving the player a window of opportunity while she chambers her rifle, but like most enemies she will learn to ignore repeated distractions before long. If Quiet feels her perch is compromised she will leap away when the player draws close and throw a grenade behind herself.

She can also be easily beaten if the player marks her and does a supply drop directly on her. In Mission 11: Cloaked in Silence this will automatically deplete her stamina in two hits. It should be noted that dropping a supply drop on her is much harder in (Extreme) Cloaked in Silence, as she will move before the supply drop lands. A risky way of preventing her from leaving is to jump in and out of cover to keep her distracted until the supply drop lands. It should also be noted that she also takes less damage from the supply drop in Extreme. Another easy way to take her out in Extreme is to call a sleeping gas bombardment and have go at her current position, as it does a significant amount of stamina damage to her. Oddly, despite it qualifying as taking her out non-lethally, it does not achieve the mission task of taking her out non-lethally.

Interestingly, Quiet's AI is completely deaf to all player-made noise until she has seen Snake out in the open at least once; because of this it's possible to sneak into Quiet's first perch and kick her, depleting a huge chuck of her stamina.

Recruitment [ ]

Quiet can be acquired as a Buddy after completing Mission 14 "Lingua Franca" and then completing a side mission given by Ocelot after a certain amount of time has elapsed. Upon visiting Quiet in her cell, after receiving the call from Ocelot, Ocelot will inform the player of Quiet's unique physiology and the abilities and disabilities that it entails. Afterwards he will also inform the player that her presence on base is affecting morale and suggests you take her on missions. Quiet can then be selected as a buddy in mission prep.

Overview [ ]

Depending on her approval rating, Quiet's reaction to the player on the chopper can range from defiant, unfriendly, and cold (at the lowest levels) to affectionate, flirtatious, and friendly (at the highest). Quiet has 2 main abilities, "Scout" and "Attack." As her approval rating goes up, more commands will be unlocked such as "Cover me", which will have her attack all enemies to allow Venom Snake to sneak up or through enemies and "Cease cover" which will cause her to stop shooting. Equipping her with the Guilty Butterfly, which fires tranquilizer rounds, makes it ideal to recruit soldiers as the player just has to hide and let Quiet take them out. The Guilty Butterfly, however, is not powerful enough to penetrate a helmet. This can lead to the soldier being shot at to alert all nearby personnel. Higher ratings will also mean outfits and sniper rifles can be unlocked.

Scout will have Quiet go and recon a location the player has designated and locations of people and military equipment will be marked as she finds them. Once she has completed scouting, Quiet will automatically enter attack mode. In attack mode, she will move to a designated vantage point and her green laser will become visible, either pointed at the player or a target in the center of the player's field-of-view. If the player is not visible from Quiet's vantage point, she will target a random enemy. When commanded, Quiet will shoot any enemy the player designates (via focusing the camera on them and selecting "Kill Target" in the command menu).

Additionally, Quiet will shoot anyone she sees who spots the player. This can make recruiting somewhat troublesome because even if the player manages to grab the target, she can still shoot them in the head if they aren't fast enough, unless the Guilty Butterfly is used. When equipped with the Sinful Butterfly sniper rifle, Quiet can snipe enemy helicopter pilots destroying it instantly. The rifle is so strong, it can penetrate helmets and armor.

As she shoot all types of enemies, including child soldiers and hostile animals like wolves, caution is advised if she is equipped with one of the two lethal rifles, as she could shot a child soldier, leading to a game over. For the Missions "Pitch Dark", including the "Total Stealth" version, "White Mamba" and "Aim True ye Vengeful" it's suggested to equip Quiet with her "Guilty Butterfly" sniper rifle, as to prevent unwanted child deaths.

Quiet has 20,000 health and 5,000 stamina.

Bond level [ ]

Depending on Venom Snake's bond level with Quiet, her poses in the cell on Mother Base or in the Aerial Command Center can be drastically different. Quiet's bond level can be increased in the following ways:

There is a maximum level of 100.

Supply drops [ ]

Quiet can drop supply drops based on what her bond level is with Snake.

Equipment [ ]

In order to access Quiet's more advanced equipment, the player must raise her bond level over certain milestones, in addition to purchasing it from the "Development" section on their iDroid .

Poses and behavior [ ]

Quiet's behavior and poses in her cell in Mother Base and the ACC depend on her bond level with the player. These are useful for determining the player's bond level with Quiet.

In the cell:

Outfits [ ]

Quiet's default outfit is called Naked, but as the player's bond with her increases, they can develop other outfits for her. The outfits the player can develop for her are: Naked (Blood), Naked (Silver Q), Naked (Gold Q) and XOF Uniform (Gray XOF). An alternate uniform called Sniper Wolf can be developed after Mission 42 has been completed.

She has pale white skin, brown hairs and grey-green eyes. During the hospital raid, she appears to wear a peculiar XOF gray uniform, albeit without the patch, wearing it with rolled sleeves and green military gloves. She has a radio near her chest, and red stun grenades on her belt. She has a practical haircut, with her hair being short and arriving just at her neck.

After the Parasite Therapy, her appearance changes. She styles her hair differently, and due to the changes made by the parasite therapy, she is forced to wear clothing that exposes her skin.

In her outfit as a Buddy, she wears a green military glove on her right hand, a black glove that covers most of her arm with "CT-1030100 Anti-Toxic Bio-Chem Garment" written on it, a green harness, a knife, gun holsters and greenish military boots. She wears stockings filled with holes.

Departure [ ]

Her initial departure can be prevented, if the player uses the Butterfly Emblem, preventing the mission from starting. It does not bring her back after the mission is completed. The player can also choose to kill Quiet after the sniper duel instead of recruiting her, though recruiting her is the canonical choice.

Quiet remains listed as MIA on the Mother Base development menu after Mission 45, although the Piggyback Guide developed in conjunction with Kojima Productions states that she died (presumably from heat stroke or dehydration). When instructed to sing in character for Quiet's final scene, Stefanie Joosten was told that, heartbroken, she would "open her mouth and sing... and die." [17] The novelization for The Phantom Pain by Hitori Nojima depicts Quiet immolating herself, by pouring flammable liquid over her body and igniting it with Big Boss's lighter, to ensure her parasites cannot spread. [18] However, in an interview, Nojima revealed that Hideo Kojima told him "[Quiet's] not dead. In the game it's not clear." [19] In the second interview with The Codec , Stefanie Joosten confirmed that Quiet's fate is left open to interpretation. [20] Regardless, if this has already happened, the player can just copy the save data to an external drive, delete it and start over to play the full game with Quiet as long as they remember to equip the Butterfly Emblem.

Using the Butterfly Emblem, and keeping Quiet past Episode 46: The Man Who Sold the World will cause conversations between Diamond Dogs recruits on Mother Base to change, with some older members seemingly coming around to her presence on the base. If one plays her departure mission after this, the conversations will revert to their initial versions, and eventually, they will cease altogether.

Reunion: Cloaked in Silence [ ]

Reunion-Cloaked-in-Silence

Reunion: Cloaked in Silence.

With the release of the Version 1.06 update in November 2015, the ability to bring Quiet back from her MIA status was added to the game. The player needs to complete Mission 11: Cloaked in Silence six times in a row without killing or leaving Quiet, to unlock a special version of the mission titled [Reunion]: Cloaked in Silence. Completing the [Reunion] version of the mission will have Quiet return permanently to Diamond Dogs with all of the equipment she had at the time she left.

However, there are no new cutscenes upon her return; only the original Cloaked in Silence cutscenes will play. After her return, she will remain in Diamond Dogs even if the player replays Mission 45: A Quiet Exit .

Special Events [ ]

If certain requirements of met, the player can trigger special animations from Quiet.

Dancing in the rain [ ]

If the player has at least 80% bond with Quiet, she's healthy, and the player has cleared the "OKB Zero" sequence (ie: the player started chapter 2), they will trigger a scene with Quiet and Venom Snake playing in the rain. Oddly, this sequence can be repeated after completing the main story, and reuniting with her, however, it cannot be triggered if the player uses their custom Medic model, and can only be done as Venom Snake.

Shower with Quiet [ ]

If the player stays outside on missions or side ops for a long time without showering, and come back to base with Quiet as a Buddy, they will trigger an Easter egg animation where Quiet stops Ocelot from pouring water on them, and takes the player to her holding cell to give them a personal shower. The player needs to have at least 60% bonding with Quiet and having completed mission 14 "Lingua Franca."

Happy Birthday [ ]

Once the player has captured her and if the birthday celebration cutscene is triggered, a special cutscene occurs where Quiet shoots a box of cigars to spell out "HBD" (meaning "Happy Birthday") and fires once more to light Venom Snake's cigar.

FOB Event [ ]

On July 24, 2018, Quiet has been added as a playable character for Event FOBs, making her the second main character barring Venom Snake himself to be playable during FOBs, the first being Revolver Ocelot .

Is possible to use her abilities like the sprint and turning invisible by crouching. However her jumping abilities are limited, as she jump instead of using ladders. Her slow-mo vision is not usable in-game. Her CQC attacks are quick kicks, capable of putting a guard KO in only one it. Her running speed is faster than compared to other characters like Venom Snake.

Her victory pose when successfully infiltrating an FOB has her clasping the back of her head and outstretching her arms in a suggestive manner, similar to her pose in when interacting with Venom Snake in the rain. [21]

References in other media [ ]

While Quiet herself does not appear in the IDW Sonic the Hedgehog comic book series, the character Whisper the Wolf , while primarily based on Sniper Wolf, had elements of Quiet's character included with her, including her rarely speaking above a whisper.

Metal Gear Solid 5′s Quiet Actress Talks About Her Character’s Controversial Costume 8 Years Later

Stefanie joosten recalls her first impressions of quiet’s provocative costume in metal gear solid v: the phantom pain..

Metal Gear Solid V

Almost a decade has passed since the release of the controversial Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain , a game that was so controversial in many ways that it marked the beginning of the end of Hideo Kojima’s very long tenure at Konami . Another aspect that caused much controversy was the suggestive appearance of the game’s female protagonist, Quiet, which left little to the imagination and did not seem very practical in a context such as that of the game.

8 years later, Stefanie Joosten, the Dutch actress who played Quiet, recalled the controversy. “It’s been interesting to see the discussions about the character. Of course, I’ve seen them, and read a lot of different perspectives on the character at the time,” Joosten first explains in an interview with IGN . “And still, I respect the choices Kojima made and his team in designing the character. And also, of course, there’s also just a choice of creating a character that’s visually appealing . I think video games are, in a way, still a sort of fantasy world you enter, so I definitely respect the choices regarding the Quiet appearance, for instance, being quite revealing.”

“But I also understand the perspective of the people that are not as happy with how she was portrayed ,” the Dutchwoman continues. “This game came out in 2015, and I think the video game landscape has changed quite a lot since then. People are looking for more representation, and I really get it..”

Joosten thinks there were alternatives

As we recall, this outfit had a plot explanation, according to Kojima. In fact, the Japanese creative asked Yoji Shinkawa , his reference artist, to create a female character with an erotic character, and Shinkawa designed her to be completely naked at first.

“Quiet’s outfit is not practical at all,” Joosten recalls. “ Even with the explanation that was given of her breathing through her skin, of course there were so many other options you could have gone with . I do agree on that. I got to see the character artwork when we were starting motion capture, and of course my first reaction was, ‘that’s a very revealing costume’, but I respected it and accepted it. So that’s basically my stance. It’s fantasy, and I find that acceptable as well.”

Meanwhile, the franchise continues to move forward, at least in the form of revisions, as the recent Metal Gear Solid Master Collection will be joined next year by Metal Gear Solid Delta , a remake of the fantastic Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater , the first gameplay of which we enjoyed recently.

Metal Gear Solid 5's Stefanie Joosten on Playing Quiet, Working With Kojima, AI, and Her New Album

Check out our full interview..

Ryan Dinsdale

Metal Gear Solid is one of the most iconic video game franchises of all time, and Stefanie Joosten's Quiet stands as one of the most notable characters within it.

In an interview with IGN, Joosten sheds light on her experience working on the final mainline Metal Gear Solid, what it was like working with famed developer Hideo Kojima, and the controversy surrounding the sexualisation of Quiet.

Joosten also discussed the possibility of working with Konami and Kojima again, what her dream roles would be, and the threat of AI amid ongoing chatter around a video game voice actors strike. All this comes ahead of Joosten releasing her second studio album, Intermission, on November 10 in collaboration with Grammy and Academy Award winning recording artist Giorgio Moroder.

IGN: Giorgio Moroder was involved in your first album but has an even bigger role this time around. How did this collaboration with Giorgio come about?

Stephanie Joosten: I was working on a video game called Wanted Dead and I worked on a couple of cover songs for the soundtrack, and I came into contact with Raney Shockne, he's a producer that works very closely with Giorgio. Raney was doing a lot of work on the soundtrack for Wanted Dead, and I don't quite recall how it happened, but the songs I covered, one was Cat People by David Bowie. And I also sang the cover of She Works Hard for the Money, which were both tracks originally produced by Giorgio.

Later on I heard from Raney that Georgio was really interested in working with me for an album, which is still quite unbelievable to me because I was completely starstruck. He came aboard and became an executive producer on my previous album. That was an incredible ride already. It was such a fun project.

The previous album had a lot of nostalgic feelings to it. We really wanted them to sound almost like authentic songs from the eighties, which I think worked and it was just so much fun.

That was, to us, that was a great success. And then this year, early this year, we started working on Intermission, my next album. And this evolved to be even more interesting, and Giorgio actually wanted to be featured on a couple of tracks. So that's really such an incredible development to me.

Your debut album was very eighties focused and sought to recreate the feeling and sound of that era, so what did you want to focus on and create this time with Intermission?

The last album was a very fun and happy album in a way. And the new one, there's a little more, what would be the right word? It has a bit of an edge to it, so there's more of a personal touch. And I mean, it has some bittersweet elements to it that makes it quite different from the previous one.

Stefanie Joosten's new album, Intermission, comes out November 10.

Switching gears a little, can you tell us about your experience working on Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain?

It's quite a long way back. I started working on Metal Gear 5 about 10 years ago now, but it's incredible, the legacy it's left behind, and I'm incredibly happy that it left such an impression that people are still talking about the game to this day.

I feel incredibly honoured to have that in my career, something that left such an impact. It was one of the first big productions I'd worked on video game wise. At the time I was living in Japan and I was working there. In total, I'd stayed in Japan for about seven years, working in theater productions, commercials, film, and TV work. And I was open to, well do as much work as possible as an actor and really get as much experience as I could.

I auditioned for this part in a new video game. I was not told at the time that it was going to be a Metal Gear Solid, but it was for motion capture, which I was really curious about. It was quite new to me at the time, and there were not as many video games back then that actually had actors be 3D scanned and portrayed in motion capture and voice as well. That was quite unique at the time.

That was a really, really cool opportunity. I was so excited to get it. And yeah, it was an absolutely wonderful experience and I learned so much from it. It was quite a long span of development, so the motion capture process was quite long, actually. It was spread out over a couple of years, so there was a lot of work to be done, and I enjoyed it to the fullest. It was great working with Hideo Kojima.

How involved was Hideo Kojima in the day to day and what was he like to work with?

Well, just overall, it was just really cool to have someone actually be so devoted to a project. He would also attend most of the motion capture sessions, which was really helpful. He had a really clear vision for the project, but it was just so large in span that the actors, including me, would often ask for more input on the characters' motivations and the world we were in. And he was incredibly helpful and always present to make sure we really got the characters. So that was just really impressive. And yeah, just a really incredible experience.

If Konami wanted to expand upon Quiet's character with a spin-off or other entry, would you be up for playing the role again?

That's an interesting question. From what I felt after finishing Metal Gear Solid 5, Quiet's story arc felt like it had a really beautiful conclusion. When I went into the last motion capture sessions and also the voiceover sessions, I really felt, at the end, I was really saying goodbye to the character as well. So that really felt like closure, but who knows? It would be interesting to explore Quiet's past, for instance.

Kojima has obviously departed from Konami now and has his own studio, so would you be up for working with him again too?

Oh, absolutely. Absolutely.

Quiet has been at the centre of debates surrounding the over sexualisation of women in video games and media overall, so how did you feel about her portrayal while creating Metal Gear Solid 5 and has your perspective changed at all since?

It's been interesting to see the discussions about the character. Of course, I've seen them, and read a lot of different perspectives on the character at the time. And still, I respect the choices Kojima made and his team in designing the character.

And also, of course, there's also just a choice of creating a character that's visually appealing. I think video games are, in a way, still a sort of fantasy world you enter, so I definitely respect the choices regarding the Quiet appearance, for instance, being quite revealing.

But I also understand the perspective of the people that are not as happy with how she was portrayed. This game came out in 2015, and I think the video game landscape has changed quite a lot since then. People are looking for more representation, and I really get it.

Quiet's outfit is not practical at all. Even with the explanation that was given of her breathing through her skin, of course there were so many other options you could have gone with. I do agree on that. I got to see the character artwork when we were starting motion capture, and of course my first reaction was, 'that's a very revealing costume', but I respected it and accepted it. So that's basically my stance. It's fantasy, and I find that acceptable as well. But I do understand, having more of a diverse representation in video games for woman and all minorities is something I would encourage as well.

You mentioned working in film and TV, doing commercials, and obviously work in video games too. And now you've added a musical career to that. So how do you describe what you do to others?

It's quite a diverse career for sure. And I'm actually really happy that it is that way. I'm able to express myself creatively on different platforms and through different media. I would say I'm foremost an actor, voiceover, and motion capture performer as well as a singer. And I intend to keep doing everything that falls under those titles.

Do you have any dream projects across any of these areas that you would love to work on?

Up until now, the roles I've played in video games have been so diverse. Every project brings something new, so I'm really for being in different genres and styles. Maybe something I would personally love is being involved in something Star Wars related. Role-playing games and something in a fantasy setting is something I'd really enjoy as well.

How do you feel about the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strikes in the United States and the chatter around a potential video game voice actor strike?

I'm not as personally affected by the strike since I'm based in the Netherlands, but I do understand the reasons for the strike. We're in quite challenging times. I think it's been the case worldwide for a lot of actors that they struggle financially, and I think it's important that you are not exploited as a performer.

There's also things like AI being talked about. It's something very unsettling to people who do voiceover work and actors too. I think most performers believe that the human aspect is vital to create something authentic and new, and so it is very natural to be protective of it, not losing your voice.

I mean, it will be such a shame just to have, for instance, your voice being replaced by just coming in somewhere and speaking a couple of lines, and have your voice processed into some kind of AI form. And it would just lose so much of all the nuances and human influence you can have on each role that you play. It's really something. It's strange times. It's strange to think about these things that are on the horizon.

The Actress Who Played Quiet In Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Is Gorgeous In Real Life

"Metal Gear Solid 5" released in 2015 and immediately became a smash hit with critics . Creator Hideo Kojima's final entry in the series before his split with Konami , it concluded the tale of Big Boss and brought some closure to the Metal Gear Solid saga. While the series did have its rise and fall , the primary entries were consistently well received and remain a major part of Kojima's legacy.

In addition to concluding Kojima's story of honorable soldiers, nefarious villains, and complex and inscrutable conspiracies, "Metal Gear Solid 5" also introduced fans to Quiet . The mysterious assassin and adversary turned ally proved to be an intriguing character and a fan favorite  in a series full of great heroes and villains.

Despite bearing the name Quiet, this character actually had quite a bit of dialogue throughout the game, provided by actress Stefanie Joosten . As it turns out, the actress who lent her voice to Quiet is just as gorgeous and intriguing as her digital counterpart.

Joosten didn't know she was auditioning for a Metal Gear Solid game

Joosten's acting career began in 2011 with small parts in music videos. She would later land a role in an episode of the Japanese miniseries Gekitsui . Her big break, however, was landing the part of Quiet and "Metal Gear Solid 5." While this would prove to be a major role for her, Joosten, as it turns out, didn't even know that was what she was auditioning for when she showed up.

As Joosten told the Dutch newspaper Het Parool (translated by Metal Gear Informer ), she was living in Japan and working as a model at the time. She was offered a chance to try out for a part in a video game but didn't get any other details. Being a gamer, she suspected what the part might be when she saw Kojima himself at the audition. She also claimed her background as a gamer was an asset to her in the audition. When asked to grab a prop weapon and act out a stealth scene, she tried to mimic what she saw in her games while the other performers "didn't have a clue at all."

Joosten's performance would land her the role and she would go on to voice Quiet as well as do motion capture to add her movements and appearance to the character.

Joosten is trilingual and has serious nerd cred

Joosten should have plenty of future opportunities as a voice actress, as she speaks three languages. Raised in small town in the Netherlands, Dutch is her native language. She also learned English growing up and spent a year in Japan before returning home to finish her bachelor's degree in Japanese Studies. Joosten told Tokyo Insight Magazine  "started getting interested in Japanese culture, mostly through games and anime." After finishing college, she felt drawn back to Japan and ended up moving there to fully immerse herself in the culture.

While back in Japan, Joosten earned her master's degree and discovered modeling (via Metal Gear Informer ). Modeling allowed her to support herself and she made Japan her new home. From modeling, she was able to make the jump to acting with "Metal Gear Solid 5" and she has since found more work in video games. She has made good use of her multilingual abilities, recently performing both the English and Japanese voiceovers for the Chinese game " ICEY ."

It was originally video games that drew Joosten to Japan and Japanese culture, and she speaks fondly of her memories of playing " Final Fantasy " games and the original "Metal Gear Solid." She's also apparently a fan of the " Kingdom Hearts " series, as she's named her two dogs Mickey and Sora .

Between her language skills and her love of gaming, she seems to have chosen the perfect profession for herself.

Stefanie Joosten on Quiet's outfit and how her views have changed over time

Konami Digital Entertainment

It's been nearly 10 years since the release of Hideo Kojima 's final Metal Gear Solid game, MGSV: The Phantom Pain, and it's still a hot topic among fans. Along with discussions about what could have been with the game (which didn't launch with all intended features) and the circumstances surrounding the creator's exit from Konami , one topic that continues to be a lively discussion relates to the infamous character Quiet, played by Stefanie Joosten.  In an interview with  IGN , Joosten took some time to share her thoughts on the character in the years since the initial controversy surrounding Quiet, and how her views have changed in the years after. "It's been interesting to see the discussions about the character. Of course, I've seen them and read a lot of different perspectives on the character at the time," said Joosten. "And still, I respect the choices Kojima made and his team in designing the character. And also, of course, there's also just a choice of creating a visually appealing character. I think video games are, in a way, still a sort of fantasy world you enter, so I respect the choices regarding the Quiet appearance, for instance, being quite revealing." "But I also understand the perspective of the people that are not as happy with how she was portrayed," she continued. "This game came out in 2015, and I think the video game landscape has changed quite a lot since then. People are looking for more representation, and I really get it."

Before MGSV's release in 2015, the character Quiet became a topic for discussion due to her revealing costume and how she fit into the game. Many fans felt that her character added unnecessary sex appeal to the game which came off as degrading to her character. Hideo Kojima would eventually speak to the controversy, stating that there were in fact, story reasons for why the silent assassin Quiet needed to wear a bikini and leggings, which led to the now infamous comment from him stating that critics of Quiet would be "ashamed of your words & deeds."

As it turned out, the story's reasons for why Quiet needed to wear a revealing outfit weren't quite as revelatory as expected. In the full game, it's revealed Quiet's body had mutated due to a Vocal Cord Parasite created by XOF and its leader Skull Face, which was an infection that targeted people's speaking abilities and specific languages spoken. This parasite also imbued Quiet with enhanced strength and speed and photosynthesis through her skin -- which explains the story's need for her to wear as little clothes as possible to take in nutrients. It's bizarre, but it makes more sense within the context of the game -- though not completely. While Quiet became a fan-favorite character and was a fun ally for Venom Snake to bring into battle, many fans felt that the need to keep her in a bikini throughout the game wasn't too justified, and MGSV added an option for Quiet to wear a more appropriate outfit if you wanted to. Joosten also agreed that Quiet's outfit wasn't totally justified, but still felt it was acceptable due it being a fantasy game. "Quiet's outfit is not practical at all," Joosten said to IGN. "Even with the explanation that was given of her breathing through her skin, of course, there were so many other options you could have gone with. I do agree on that. I got to see the character artwork when we were starting motion capture, and of course my first reaction was, 'that's a very revealing costume', but I respected it and accepted it. So that's basically my stance. It's fantasy, and I find that acceptable as well. But I do understand, having more of a diverse representation in video games for woman and all minorities is something I would encourage as well." Despite the choices for the character, Joosten stated she was proud to work on Metal Gear Solid V and that she would "absolutely" work with Kojima on another game given the opportunity. Quiet was certainly one of the MGS franchise's weirded ally characters, who ended up being a total badass at the end of the day despite the one sore spot to her portrayal.  With the Metal Gear Solid franchise back in the discourse with the recent release of the Master Collection, fans have been looking back on the franchise as a whole; with Volume 1 out the door, we'll likely see even more discussion for MGSV once the next set of remasters come along. Metal Gear Solid 5 Quiet Actress Working on New Game Vengeance is Mine

The voice actress who played Quiet in Metal Gear Solid 5 announces that her next project is the time travel mech combat game Vengeance is Mine.

The Metal Gear Solid series is packed with memorable characters brought to life by talented people. This includes Quiet from Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain , and now Quiet actress Stefanie Joosten is taking the lead as creative director of a new mech combat game currently titled Vengeance is Mine .

Joosten, who was almost cast as Fragile in Death Stranding , announced the new game recently through a short video posted to her Twitter. There, she briefly introduced Vengeance is Mine , which she described as a game that blends genres and themes in unexpected ways and innovates on industry standards as gamers know them.

RELATED: Hideo Kojima Offers His Take on Zack Snyder's Justice League

According to the official blurb, Vengeance is Mine tells the story of Gabriel Jaeger, who is brutally executed by three time travelers going to 1664 in search of an old piece of technology that will lead them to a terrible power. In a plot that wouldn't be out of place in a Metal Gear Solid game , Charles Jaeger uses the technology to activate the Deacon, a derelict military installation buried under the streets of New Amsterdam. This rallies the people to meet their spiritual leader Robert Wright "beyond the horizon of time and space." However, Gabriel Jaeger narrowly survives his execution and prepares to wreak his revenge using a prototype HYDRA mech suit, which appears to be shown off during the video.

Vengeance is Mine will be published by 110 Industries and will reportedly feature a time-manipulation mechanic that may function similarly to the more popular bullet-time functions found in some action games. This will apparently allow players to speed up time or slow it to blink toward enemies, readjust combos, or even cheat death. Metal Gear veteran Joosten states that this title is more than just a game, which may suggest that she took a leaf from Hideo Kojima's notoriously bizarre and creative book .

As of writing, it appears that fans of Joosten's work are excited about the announcement of Vengeance is Mine . One Twitter user even went so far as to state that Joosten's presence was enough to get them excited about the game, which may reflect how some of Hideo Kojima's fans appear to feel about him . Several fans wished Joosten luck on her new project, while another immediately vowed to check it out and a third reported that they couldn't wait to learn more about Vengeance is Mine in the future.

Afghanistan Map

Quiet is a tactical Buddy in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain . She is Metal Gear 5's primary female protagonist who supports Snake in both infiltration and combat.

She is first encountered during Mission 11 . After defeating her, Snake has the option to kill her or let her live. By keeping her alive, Snake will take her back to Mother Base where she can be deployed for missions.

Available for Deployment

metal gear solid 5 phantom pain quiet actress

Quiet becomes available for deployment after completing Side Ops #111 and at the start of Mission 14 . Once Quiet is available for deployment, Snake will have additional R&D options to develop stronger weapons and skimpier costumes for Quiet.

Default Abilities

metal gear solid 5 phantom pain quiet actress

Quiet is a Vanguard Sharpshooter that can pick off targets from long range and carry out covert scouting missions. If Snake designates an outpost or guard post as a deployment or movement point, she will recon the area and mark soldiers, vehicles, and supplies on the iDroid.

Be aware that Quiet cannot scout areas of the map that don't have a designated location. For example, when pursuing the "Extract the Highly Skilled Soldier" Side Op missions, the target is usually located in an unmarked area of the map. Since it isn't a guard post or outpost, Quiet can't scout the area, though you can pinpoint a sniping position nearby and she'll be able to ID the target.

If Snake designates a sniping position as a deployment or movement point, Quiet will eliminate any enemies that spot him (outdoors only), which prevents the enemy force from going on combat alert. Also, when Quiet moves to a new position, her teleport move can actually kill any enemy that is in her way. For more information on what other commands Snake can unlock for Quiet, read the list below.

Quiet's Skills

metal gear solid 5 phantom pain quiet actress

Quiet's abilities can be upgraded based on the amount of trust (bond percentage) that Snake earns. To increase the bond percentage, take Quiet on missions/Side Ops and let her do all the work for you. The more enemies she shoots and commands given by Snake, the higher her level increases.

To use Quiet's "Scout" or "Attack" abilities, bring her on a mission and then open the iDroid menu. Select the "Quiet (Scout)" to make her search a specific outpost/guard post or select the "Quiet (Attack)" to position her at a sniping point.

Quiet's Equipment

metal gear solid 5 phantom pain quiet actress

Developing custom equipment for Quiet will allow Snake to change her attacks (lethal/non-lethal/anti-material). However, this is only possible after first increasing the bond percentage with her by completing numerous missions as a team. Quiet has a total of three Sniper Rifles. Two of them have additional Suppressor abilities totaling FOUR upgrades.

Quiet's Outfits

metal gear solid 5 phantom pain quiet actress

There are FIVE variants of Quiet's base outfit that can be unlocked for the R&D team to develop over the course of MGS5. Quiet's outfits do not serve any tactical purpose on the battlefield other than a cosmetic change.

Unlockable Animations

Once Quiet is at Mother Base and available for deployment, there are various animations of her that are unlocked based on the Bond level with Snake. See the list below for the details.

To view Quiet's reactions in the field, press the L1/LB button and choose the "Quiet" option to speak to her. Her response is based on Snake's bond level.

Keeping Quiet On the Roster

1.06 update: getting quiet back to mother base.

SPOILER WARNING! Click HERE to get Quiet back to Mother Base after Mission 45!

metal gear solid 5 phantom pain quiet actress

After completing Mission 43 , Ocelot will call Snake and inform him that Quiet has left Mother Base. After viewing the cutscene of Emmerich's exile from Mother Base, Side Ops #150 will become available, which leads into Mission 45. After Mission 45, Quiet will no longer be available for deployment.

If you prefer to keep Quiet around just a bit longer (she will have to depart eventually), there are two ways to do it:

  • Have Buddy Bond of less than 100% . This includes not visiting her at the Brig at the Medical Platform, not taking her out on Missions/Side Ops, and/or letting her get injured during combat situations when deployed.
  • Use the Butterfly icon for the Diamond Dogs Emblem if it's been obtained (see screencap below). The emblem can only be obtained by letting Quiet do most of the wetwork during a mission.

metal gear solid 5 phantom pain quiet actress

This needs to be done BEFORE completing Mission 43! Meeting one of these two requirements will allow Quiet to stick around temporarily - though doing so will NOT enable 100% game completion or unlock Missions 45 & 46.

Shower with Quiet Easter Egg

Once a 100% bond is earned with Quiet, Snake can trigger a special cutscene of Quiet taking a personal shower in the Brig at the Medical Platform. The scene is unlocked by doing the following:

  • Have 100% bond with Quiet as a Buddy
  • Take her out on a mission or Side Op
  • Stay in the field for five consecutive in-game days without returning to the ACC (use the Phantom Cigar to advance time quickly)
  • Make sure there are a lot of flies buzzing around Snake's head
  • Return to Mother Base with Quiet in the Chopper

Instead of the usual cutscene of Ocelot dousing Snake with a bucket of water, Quiet will think of a better way to make Snake zestfully clean (much to Ocelot's repulsion).

Quiet Loves the Rain

If Snake's bond with Quiet is at 60% or higher, there is a special cutscene that can be triggered when returning to Mother Base. To trigger the scene, Quiet must be with Snake in the chopper and return to Mother Base during rainy conditions.

When Snake returns to Mother Base, the special scene of Quiet and Snake having some fun in the rain will trigger.

Stefanie Joosten and Giorgio Moroder have released new single 'Tryouts for the Human Race', from the upcoming album 'Intermission'. Listen on Spotify , Apple Music , and YouTube .

'Quiet's Outfit Was Not Practical at All' Metal Gear Solid 5 Actress Comments on Controversial Character

  • The actress who played Quiet in Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain found her character's revealing outfit impractical, echoing concerns about over-sexualization of women in video games.
  • Hideo Kojima expanded Metal Gear Solid 5's world through new characters and ideas, including Quiet, a seemingly mute sniper assassin.
  • Stephanie Joosten, the actress who played Quiet, acknowledges the criticism of her character's portrayal and encourages more diverse representation in video games for women and all minorities.

The actress who played Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain 's Quiet stated she found her character's outfit impractical even when players considered the game's explanation. Quiet's outfit in Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain became a topic of debate about the over-sexualization of women in video games due to its revealing nature being out of place for a sniper assassin.

Despite being on the brink of falling out with Konami, Hideo Kojima still managed to expand the world of Metal Gear through the new characters and ideas he weaved into Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain 's story. One of them is Quiet, a seemingly mute sniper assassin who turned from Venom Snake's prisoner to partner (and even love interest). While her presence on the fields of Afghanistan and Africa, in and out of missions, provides players with helpful intel and fire support, many took notice of her attire, which doesn't look practical for someone in her role. Gamers who played the game may remember that Quiet's outfit reveals as much of her skin as decently possible, allowing her to breathe from her skin more efficiently after a certain incident in Cyprus.

Stephanie Joosten, the actress who played Quiet, recently admitted to thinking the same about her character's outfit. According to Joosten's interview with IGN , she confesses that she found the scantily clad sniper assassin's outfit "very revealing" and that it wasn't practical at all. She also stated that the game's explanation behind Quiet's attire didn't provide an argument strong enough to justify her wearing such a revealing outfit.

However, Joosten states she does understand, accept, and respect the fact that Quiet and the explanation behind her revealing attire throughout the game was only a part of Metal Gear Solid 's "fantasy world." She also acknowledges the fact that there are people who are not happy with how Quiet was portrayed in-game and that Quiet was a product of a time gone by. "This game came out in 2015, and I think the video game landscape has changed quite a lot since then. People are looking for more representation, and I really get it," Joosten said. Lastly, she said that "diverse representation" in video games for women and all minorities is something she'd encourage.

Kojima's addition of Quiet to Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain and the Metal Gear Solid universe in general is certainly controversial to critics and some groups, which pointed to her objectification. Kojima defended her addition to the series, saying she is an antithesis to excessively exposed characters from fighting games. He also said that the reason behind her outfit would shame those who criticized her attire on the battlefield. However, his endorsement of the character's seemingly realistic figurine didn't help his case much. Regardless, Quiet is more than just her outfit – her choices throughout the game, for good or ill, may leave a lasting impact that could change how players look at her.

'Quiet's Outfit Was Not Practical at All' Metal Gear Solid 5 Actress Comments on Controversial Character

Metal Gear Informer

Stefanie Joosten (Quiet) on MGSV: The Phantom Pain’s dark story: “You may come to hate a lot of characters as well.”

In an interview by Fragged Nation, co-hosted by YongYea and Korrupt Ronin, Stefanie Joosten, the actress for the already famous sniper Quiet in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, talked about her role, working with Kojima and the Metal Gear series in general.

Responding to the question what she likes about Metal Gear, Stefanie said: “It’s such a legendary series, it’s really an honor to be in it.” She is really happy to be able to be part of it and sees it as a once in a lifetime chance.

MGSV-GZ-3D-Capture-Stefanie-Joosten-Close

Stefanie played quite a lot of the earlier Metal Gear games: Metal Gear Solid 1, Metal Gear Solid 3, Metal Gear Solid 4, Peace Walker, and Ground Zeroes. Metal Gear Solid 2 she did not finish. However, she tried not to be too influenced by them when playing Quiet, because she feels Kojima was trying new things with The Phantom Pain. “Also, I think his direction may be a bit different from earlier games. But of course it was really nice to go in the backstory, and it really helped.”

So who is Stefanie’s favorite character in the Metal Gear series? Gray Fox from MGS1. “He had a really cool introduction, of course. It’s just such a sad story, it’s just a really deep character. And he was badass, of course.”

Stefanie has worked on MGSV for almost three years. Motion capture recordings are done at an early stage. “So I’m really looking forward to the release.” In the last stage the people at the studio are really working hard on the game, making long hours. Stefanie herself is done recording though. “For now I believe I’m finished.” But she can always be asked to come back if they need to add some things.

In preparation for the role, she did military training, supervised by Shinkawa and Kojima. The team has done quite a bit of training by now, so they know their military moves (Kojima included).

Her modeling experience helped her with the role of Quiet, since facial expressions are an important aspect of modeling photos as well. Also, when you see Quiet walk away in one of the cutscenes she is sort of walking like a model (also motion captured by Stefanie), and Stefanie said Kojima encouraged her to do the ‘model walk’. “Quiet has very nuanced ways of expressing herself. I think it will be different than what most people expect, I guess.” She also uses her humming to communicate (not Sins of the Father but a different song).

MGSV-The-Phantom-Pain-TGS-2014-Screen-Quiet-Enters-Mother-Base-7

Stefanie didn’t personally meet the other actors. She did go to LA for the facial capture, and she got to hear the recordings of the other actors while doing her part.

On working with Kojima, she says: “It’s very interesting.” She especially liked the motion capture, because it’s like being on a film set. The actors got the script in advance, but on set Kojima would come up with different things to try out. “Sometimes he would come up with some pretty crazy stuff.” But some of the ‘crazy stuff’ has made it through, and she thinks the result is amazing.

Talking about Quiet’s relationship with Big Boss, she said: “It’s very complicated. I think that TPP will just be a whole different experience for Metal Gear fans.” The game has a huge scale, and offers a lot of freedom in what you can do. “Al I can say: the relationship between Big Boss and Quiet, it really depends on the player. It depends on you actions and your decisions. So you’ll have to see for yourself.” The scale of her role in the story also depends on player decisions. She will remain mysterious to a degree. Players will be able to understand the character, but they will have to work for it. “It’s really deep, so you have to really look for it, I think.” You will also find out about the history between Quiet and Big Boss, but she didn’t want to spoil it.

MGSV-The-Phantom-Pain-TGS-2014-Screen-Quiet-Enters-Mother-Base-6

Aside from Big Boss, there will also be interaction between Quiet and other characters like Kaz and Ocelot, as seen in the trailer. “It’s a very complicated situation between the main characters and their relationship.” She says that everyone is very suspicious of Quiet (something that can already be seen in the cutscene of Quiet entering Mother Base).

So what does she like about Quiet? “She is a very strong character.” Not just because of her powers, as seen in the trailers. “She has a strong sense of pride.” Her actions show her personality. And how would she describe this personality? “At first she is very closed and kind of keeps to the background,” Stefanie explained. What we see in the gameplay trailer (when she gives a thumbs up) is when she has built up a more comfortable relationship with Big Boss.

On Quiet’s revealing attire, Stefanie said: “I’m not bothered by it.” It will make sense if you play the game, according to Stefanie.

Will there be more powers that Quiet has that haven’t been revealed yet? “I kind of think you have an impression of what she can do, but there is definitely more to it.”

She said she was amused by the whole ‘Quiet = Chico’ theory that appeared on the internet a while ago. “But as I said it in the Japanese Kojima Station, it’s not true.” She added that she thinks it’s funny that even after she denied it, people continued with the theory.

Stefanie once again noted that it will be a very dark story, and added: “You may come to hate a lot of characters as well.”

Stefanie Joosten, the actress who played Quiet in Hideo Kojima's Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain , has said she understands both sides of the controversy surrounding the sexualisation of her character.

Quiet became the centre of debate surrounding the over-sexualisation of women in video games and the media in general due to the character wearing little more than a bikini despite being a military assassin.

"It's been interesting to see the discussions about the character," Joosten said in a new interview with IGN. "Of course, I've seen them, and read a lot of different perspectives on the character at the time. And still, I respect the choices Kojima made and his team in designing the character.

Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima implied he thought the character was quite forward facing at the time though, saying ahead of launch he created her "as an antithesis" to women characters featured in video games of the past. Once critics found out the story reasons for Quiet's scantily clad outfit, they would "feel ashamed of [their] words and deeds", he said .

As explained in Metal Gear Solid 5, Quiet wears so little because she sustained serious injuries while trying to kill protagonist Big Boss at the beginning of the game. These injuries can't be seen, but mean she can only breathe or drink through her skin, so wearing too much clothing would lead to suffocation.

Critics didn't believe this was enough to justify Quiet wearing so little, with the Metal Gear Solid 5 writers able to create any backstory they wanted for the character. They said instead the character was objectified and used as a selling point, pointing to the likes of a Quiet figurine that featured soft plastic breasts that Kojima himself advertised .

Mark Of The Ninja

metal gear solid 5 phantom pain quiet actress

Takvim yaprakları 2012 yılını gösterdiğinde ise karşımıza Mark of the Ninja çıktı.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

metal gear solid 5 phantom pain quiet actress

Alien: Isolation

metal gear solid 5 phantom pain quiet actress

Hitman: Blood Money

metal gear solid 5 phantom pain quiet actress

HITMAN World of Assassination

metal gear solid 5 phantom pain quiet actress

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory

Öte yandan oyunda her biri harika çalışan üç ayrı oyun tarzı bulunuyor.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Thief II: The Metal Age
