wewak yacht club

I was fortunate to pay a flying visit to Wewak, in New Guinea (only three degrees from the Equator), and to be able to compete in the Wewak Yacht Club’s first race of the 1971/72 season, early May. There are six Seaflys in Wewak and only about six boats of other types, including a Moth, a Hornet, a Flying Tern and a couple of Herons. The Club hopes shortly to acquire its seventh Seafly.Of the Seaflys at Wewak, four were built from kits provided from South Devon Boatbuilders in Britain, from where the Class originated. The first hull – No. 232 (Dryfly) – was finished in 1967 and another has been built each year since then. The driving force behind the building of the boats has been Mr.Denny Barnard and his efforts, and those of his helpers, have been amply rewarded by four very handsome craft.

Wewak Yacht Club landing stage

The sails are English too – from Lucas the sailmaker – and the mainsails and spinnakers are much the same as the ones recently made by Hood sailmakers for the Australian Class Association to the British measurements. The Wewak boats have not had a great deal of success in carrying their spinnakers shy and this tends to confirm our experience in Canberra with the English designed spinnaker, that it is not as efficient as the Australian sails. The additional problem in Wewak is the under-length spinnaker poles which is a major disadvantage in trying to carry a balloon spinnaker shy.The Wewak Yacht Club does not have a Clubhouse at this stage; up until now it has only managed to obtain a lease on a block of land on a 12 monthly renewal basis and it is not prepared to commit a lot of money with such an indefinite lease. It does however, have a workshop that includes sufficient space to store half a dozen or so boats. There are about 50 members in the Club. The sailing season starts in early May and finishes in late November and there is a race each Sunday afternoon. The ‘sailing widows’ start the races from the shore and record the finishes.

In the race in which I competed, there were six competitors, made up of four Seaflys, a Hornet and a Flying Tern. I was sailing ‘Blowfly’ (No. 75), one of the originals of the Class imported from Canberra (1963 vintage, with original suit of sails) with Mrs Robin Tranter, the wife of the present owner, as crew. She had been sailing only three times before, had never used a spinnaker but acquitted herself well. At the start ‘Blowfly’ managed to gain both an actual advantage and a psychological one, by sailing along the line on starboard tack compared to everyone elses’ port tack, and thereby, caused some rapid changes in courses.

First across the line was the Hornet (Bill Graham), 30 seconds ahead of Denny Barnard in the first Seafly, with third to ‘Blowfly’, five minutes later. The total racing time for the Hornet was 2 hours 4 minutes.

The other Seaflys in Wewak are No. 231 (Peter Godfrey) and No. 94 (formerly of Canberra) (Dave Richards).

The hazards of sailing in Wewak were to me, the same as those of sailing in Moresby – the heat and the inevitable reefs. The light wind was another one but this is apparently to be expected in the doldrum period.

Wewak itself is a delightful tropical township with numerous rusting wrecks from the last war scattered around the beaches and I can well imagine the fun of sailing in the SE trades season when the winds vary from 10 to 25 knots.

It appears that the racing was taken seriously in Wewak. The June 1974 Newsletter of the UK SDCA  reports an appeal to the RYA Appeals Committee concerning a dispute between two Seaflys racing there:

The case concerned two Seaflys and involved Rules 43.1 and 43.2 (a)(i) – A yacht hailing for room to tack at an obstruction shall tack immediately she is able to do so.

The two beats were beating on parallel courses towards a reef, when the leeward “Nausicaa” called “Water” and the windward “Barfly” immediately responded. “Nausicaa” however held on for 3-4 boat’s lengths befero tacking. The Race Committee dismissed “Barfly’s” protest, but on appeal to the R.Y.A. the protest was upheld on the grounds that if “Nausicaa” could sail on for 3-4 lengths the Race Committee should have considered disqualifying her for hailing too soon.>

The comment in the UK SDCA Newsletter was that “ …mention of a reef sounds like somewhere pretty exotic and the scene was fact Wewak Y.C. in New Guinea – surely one of the most far flung places where the Seafly is sailed .”

Why sailing…

Sailing is a sport that is open to almost any age, contributing to inter-generational competition. We have many children that race with and against their parents creating a healthy level of competition, strengthening the family bond.

Kids that sail are immersed in STEM related activities. Sailing draws on science, engineering, and physics lending to a better understanding of these topics. Inadvertently, students learn appreciation for nature and respect for the environment.

Oh, and it’s absolutely one of the best sports for spectating!

Classes and Seminars

The Waukegan Yacht Club is dedicated to providing a wide range of educational opportunities in any topic related to boating, the Great Lakes and the nautical life. Classes are taught by experts and members with significant experience in the subject. Many classes and seminars are free to members or offered at a reduce cost. Classes are open to the public except as noted in a class description. Students who have taken the Celestial Navigation previously can retake the class at no cost on a space available basis. Students retaking the class do not receive new class materials. Updated handouts can be purchased for a small fee.

Celestial Navigation Seminar Series

Most boaters and travelers have been spoiled in recent years by handheld GPS devices, smartphones and Google maps. But, what happens when you are beyond the reach of the cell towers? What happens when the power goes out or the batteries go dead? What’s your backup method for navigation? When you are a thousand miles offshore it’s too late to look for alternative options.

The Celestial Navigation course provided by the Waukegan Yacht Club is designed to teach you everything you need to know to navigate around the world using observations of the sun, stars and planets, along with a dead-reckoning track. The class is taught in 4 sessions:

Session 1: Dead Reckoning (prerequisite for all other sessions)

Date: sunday, november 14 (10am-2pm).

In this session you will learn:

  • How to obtain, read and use nautical charts

  • How to plan a navigational track
  • How to create and maintain a navigation logbook

Club members race C Scows: A 20' boat with 30' mast and one main sail

C scow races are held on sundays from memorial day through labor day, c scows are sailed by one skipper with one or two crew members.

Wonder Lake Yacht Club The Wonder Lake Yacht Club was founded in 1941 and was the first social organization in Wonder Lake. Each summer the club offers an exciting array of social activities along with it's Sunday and Holiday C Scow racing schedule, so there is something for everyone, sailors and non-sailors alike.

Browse through our website. We are sure you will find something of interest, and then come out and join us. The club consists of two separate memberships. The Sailing membership and the Social membership.

Most of the sailors belong to both memberships, but we have many individuals who opt for just the Social membership.

Annual Summer Events Late April, early May we have our Spring meeting with sailing award presentations from the prior year.

In June it's a Flotilla, where many pontoons are tied together in the West bay, everyone brings an appetizer to pass and we enjoy refreshments and camaraderie.

July is a very busy month. The WLYC sponsors Venetian Night which has become a part of the Patriotic Celebration weekend for several years. Click on the above highlighted link for this year's information. As the parade of boats passes by, it's not uncommon to see local residents with bonfires, cheering and waving flashlights from the shore. The Yacht Club will also have a float in the WL Patriotic Celebration parade .

In August the club hosts the annual Pontoon Progressive Dinner Party, where several lake front home owners host a portion of the meal. Travel to the various meal courses is via pontoon boats, and each year a different theme is determined. This is the big event each year and is always well attended.

The second Saturday in September is the Fish & Weeds Regatta, which is an annual C Scow race between the WLYC, Brown's Lake , and some Pistakee Lake and Lake Geneva sailors. This is a fun event for the skippers and crew to reconnect with teams from the other lakes. It is also beautiful to watch.

Check out this year's Social Schedule and Racing Schedule.
