Stream It Or Skip It: ‘Sniper: Ghost Shooter’ on Netflix, a Generic Action Movie in Which “Good” White People Shoot “Bad” Brown People From Long Distances
Where to stream:.
- Sniper: Ghost Shooter
- Action Movies
Stream It Or Skip It: ‘Role Play’ on Amazon Prime Video, a Hacky Action-Comedy Made Tolerable by David Oyelowo and Kaley Cuoco
Stream it or skip it: ‘lift’ on netflix, a kevin hart action-comedy aimed at an international streaming audience, stream it or skip it: ‘napoleon’ on vod, a cloddish biopic-romance-battle epic that does joaquin phoenix no favors, is 'noryang: deadly sea' streaming on netflix or prime video.
Sniper: Ghost Shooter is a 2016 direct-to-video actioner that’s been mingling with Netflix’s top 10 most-watched titles, so who says Billy Zane’s star has faded? I won’t put my boots in the speculative swamp in an attempt to figure out WHY the sixth in an as-of-now eight-movie cheapo action-flick series is being streamed so frequently, because that’s the job of an errand boy sent by grocery clerks to collect a bill. No, instead I’ll report that series mainstay Tom Berenger doesn’t make an appearance here, but its other mainstay Chad Michael Collins stars, and DTV superstar Don Michael Paul ( Kindergarten Cop 2 , Jarhead 2 , Tremors 5 , Death Race 4 ) directs, and somewhere out there, Anthony Michael Hall and Chad Michael Murray wonder why they didn’t get invited.
SNIPER: GHOST SHOOTER : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?
The Gist: A crack Marines sniper team hides here and there and elsewhere, somewhere in Turkey. The Colonel (Dennis Haysbert) says their target is “priority level four,” which seems important, unless priority level one is the most important? Or maybe it’s on a scale from one to 10, with 10 being the most important? I’m not sure. I don’t think it matters? It doesn’t matter: These people need to shoot some other people, that’s the important thing. Those other people are some black-clad shitheads who have five American hostages on boats, and they’re about to land on a beach and get to beheadin’. Our protag is Brandon Beckett (Collins), nickname “Gunny,” who’s the team’s star shooter, which reminds me, don’t get this movie series confused with Shooter , the 2007 movie in which Mark Wahlberg played a sniper named Bob Lee Swagger (yes, you may laugh), which became a USA Network series headlined by Ryan Philippe. We certainly haven’t wanted for sniper-related content in recent years, have we? It’s a whole sub-subgenre now.
I digress. Beckett lines up his sights, but hesitates to squeeze the trigger when the bad guys give a kid the beheadin’ knife. A kid! The op goes south, and one of the hostages is killed, but don’t worry, lots of faceless bad guys get the hell sniped out of them, digital blood flying everywhere, and the bad guy kid ultimately gets blown up by a drone strike. There’s all kinds of talk about how Beckett blew it by not killing the kid. The true hoo-rah sniper move would be to put the bullet in the person who’s only been alive for about a decade. Anyone else on that Fast and Furious -except-they’re-snipers crew would’ve murdered a child without batting an eyelid, because FEELINGS are for PUSSIES. Beckett gets chewed out by his squad leader, Miller (Zane), for not wanting to blow a 10-year-old’s brains out. As someone explains, “The work we do — it isn’t God’s work. We do the stuff he doesn’t wanna do.” Nice movie you’ve got here!
So Beckett has some shit to work through as the squad moves on to its next mission: guarding a pipeline in Georgia (the country) from terrorists, because few things are more crucial to international relations than maintaining the integrity of fossil-fuel infrastructure by killing faceless brown-skinned evildoers in headscarves and turbans. God bless the USA! The team will be backed by drones that are “smart enough to know which rock you guys took a piss against.” Neat! Of course, the bad guys are led by Gazakov (Velislav Pavlov), who also happens to be a deadeye sniper — and who somehow knows the good guy snipers’ exact GPS positions, which is a problem, because it allows him to shoot them. Beckett ends up pairing with a Russian sniper dude (Ravil Isyanov) who ALSO once hesitated to kill a kid by firing a bullet at him from very far away, so at least our hero now has a sympathetic pal to help him get through this plot. Will Gunny ever hesitate again to kill a person of any age who totally deserves to be killed? NO SPOILERS!
What Movies Will It Remind You Of?: A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SNIPER MOVIES: Tom Berenger — who you may not be surprised to learn was born Thomas MICHAEL Moore! — starred in the original 1993 film, which actually showed in theaters, as well as five others in the series. The second was a TV movie, the rest were DTV, and had titles like Sniper: Mortal Triggers and Sniper: Lethal Fatalities and Sniper: Death’s Demise . Collins, who plays the Berenger character’s son which therefore proves snipering is a genetically inherited trait, has anchored the last five. The most recent is 2020’s Sniper: Assassin’s End . Otherwise, Sniper: Ghost Shooter reminds me of Rambo II and Rambo III in their grossly regressive xenophobia and pointlessly brutal violence.
Performance Worth Watching: Collins deserves this acknowledgment for delivering the Suessian tonguetwister line “So how does a Russian officer with the 3rd Guard Spetsnaz Brigade end up working sight security for a Euro-Asian energy consortium” with all the dramatic gravitas it deserves.
Memorable Dialogue: It doesn’t matter who says the following shit, but someone definitely wrote this shit:
“Say hello to my Russian friend!” (fires machine gun at bad guys)
“I can put you at a desk in bumf— Egypt!”
“Welcome to the wild wild east.”
“I’m SICK of all your shit-talkin’ and ass-grabbin’!”
“We’re not in the business of next time. We’re in the business of ONE time.”
“Embrace the suck!”
“This looks like a real shitshow.” (things turn into a shitshow)
Sex and Skin: Can one participate in intercourse through a scope at 400 meters? No? Then nobody here’s interested.
Our Take: Sniper: Ghost Shooter is absolutely competently directed total garbage, a series of action sequences loosely strung together and fervently spiced with military-porn jingoism and slo-mo shots of our protagonist strutting toward an SUV or ejecting a spent shell from his rifle with a hearty CH-CHCK. There are no characters here, only people doing their jobs. It features a plot in which the hearty macho Marine must stop relying on technology and just use his damn god-given gut to get through this shit, which is kind of like when R2-D2 got zapped and Luke had to use the Force to guide the photon torpedo into the Death Star exhaust port.
There’s a scene in which Beckett defies all probability and ducks under a rocketing drone missile, and many scenes in which his bullets just rip through the guts and hearts of crass stereotypes of Middle-Eastern terrorists. The hard-boiled dialogue is straight out of The Big Book of Action Movie Cliches , and includes a line in which Beckett’s spotter partner exhorts, “KILL that (insert highly offensive ethnic slur for Muslims here)!” And did I mention the part of the movie where people are obviously total wimps for fostering a moral objection to killing a child? If you don’t like this movie you are obviously a beta cuck.
Our Call: SKIP IT. Watching Sniper: Ghost Shooter is priority level zero.

Sniper is a 1993 action thriller directed by Luis Llosa and starring Tom Berenger as Master Gunnery Sergeant Thomas Beckett, a USMC sniper who is paired with Richard Miller ( Billy Zane ), a novice former Olympic shooter now employed by the National Security Council, as the two are sent on a mission to Colombia to eliminate a drug cartel leader. When the mission is comprised, the duo must find a way to complete their missions as well as devise a way for their safe extraction. Sniper would be spawn a series of DTV films, as Berenger would return as Beckett in 2002's Sniper 2 , 2004's Sniper 3 and 2014's Sniper: Legacy and Zane would return as Miller in 2011's Sniper: Reloaded and 2016's Sniper: Ghost Shooter . Both Berenger and Zane would reunite onscreen in the 2017 sequel Sniper: Ultimate Kill .

- 1.3 SVD Dragunov
- 2.2 Norinco Type-56
- 2.3 Norinco Type 56-1 (slant muzzle brake)
- 2.4 L1A1 Self Loading Rifle

USMC Master Gunnery Sergeant Thomas Beckett ( Tom Berenger ) uses an M40A1 in 7.62x51mm NATO, a sniper rifle based on the Remington Model 700 . The M40A1 rifles used in the film were Remington 700 rifles, supplied for the filming by 'Weapons and Effects' of San Rafael, CA. The rifles were fully prepared as though they would see real use, with aftermarket bedding, trigger jobs, McMillan stocks and parkerization done by Scott, McDougall & Associates of Santa Rosa, CA.
Heckler & Koch SR9TC
NSC sniper Richard Miller ( Billy Zane ) uses the Heckler & Koch SR9 TC rifle as his weapon of choice.
The guerrilla sniper DeSilva ( Edward Wiley ), who was trained by Beckett ( Tom Berenger ), uses an SVD Dragunov as his sniper rifle. Another guerrilla sniper at Ochoa's Compound also uses a Dragunov.
Rifles / Carbines
Corporal Doug Papich ( Aden Young ), Beckett's spotter, is seen with an M16A2 mounted with a scope as he and Beckett move to the extraction site at the beginning of the film.
The Norinco Type 56 is carried by several guerrilla fighters in the film, most notably by the one who opens fire on the helicopter carrying Miller.
Norinco Type 56-1 (slant muzzle brake)
The Norinco Type 56-1 is carried by several guerrilla fighters in the film. They are fitted with AKM -style slanted muzzles, but are identifiable as Type 56s and not actual AKMs from the hooded foresight that only Chinese AKs have.
L1A1 Self Loading Rifle
An L1A1 SLR rifle is seen hanging on a wall of the Marine Enlisted Club. As the movie was filmed in Australia and used an actual Australian Army NCO club this would have been an actual Lithgow Small Arms Factory Australian L1A1 with the original handguards prior to the introduction of the rounded variant more common on Australian L1A1s.
The leader of the guerrillas aiding Beckett carries an M1A1 Carbine .
Heckler & koch mp5a3.
The Heckler & Koch MP5A3 is seen carried by several Ochoa guards. One guard carries his MP5A3 fitted with a night vision scope.
Another Ochoa guard carries a pistol-gripped Remington 870 .
"El Cirujano" ( Ken Radley ) fires a tripod mounted Browning M2 at the lookout tower where Beckett was.
Marine doorgunners fire M60D machine guns from their Marine UH-1 helicopters.
Guerrillas are seen firing an RPD light machine gun into the countryside after Beckett's target is eliminated.
LAR Grizzly Mk I
"El Cirujano" ( Ken Radley ) carries a LAR Grizzly Mk I in his shoulder holster. Beckett is also able to use it at the end of the film.
Beckett carries a SIG-Sauer P226 as his sidearm throughout the film.
An Ochoa soldier is seen aiming a Browning Hi-Power when the helicopter comes for the extraction.
M203 Grenade Launcher
A young Marine riding with Miller in the helicopter has an M203 grenade launcher underslung on his M16A2.
