Vancouver’s Top Yacht Clubs

vancouver yacht club membership fees

The yacht clubs of days past were snooty, exclusive affairs, where the greatest benefit of membership was the feeling of being accepted by a bunch of other rich folks. Thankfully, times have changed (mostly), and Vancouver’s home to a handful of yacht clubs that offer precisely what you’d hope for: ample cocktails, tanned nautical babes and, when there’s time, a little bit of sailing.

Drunk Sailors There’s no dress code or clubhouse at Tiddly Cove Yacht Club ; casual social events are held at the Maritime Museum or various False Creek pubs. What else would you expect from a club whose name was inspired by a Vancouver Sun comic strip? ( Tiddly , apparently, is British slang for drunk.) 1905 Ogden Ave. From $70/year, plus initiation, from $70.

Serious Sailors West Vancouver Yacht Club has a friendly, community vibe, and it allows non-members to take classes. The club, on Howe Sound, has some of the best sailing equipment in town and a roster of world-class instructors. 5854 Marine Dr., 604-921-7575. From $869/year, plus initiation, from $2,445. Nubile Sailors When they’re not playing beach volleyball, those fit Kits girls are at the Kitsilano Yacht Club . Non-members can pay $18 to join racing and dinner nights on Thursdays, when the patio gets rowdy. 2401 Point Grey Rd., 604-730-1646. From $325/year.

Moneyed Sailors Remember our comment about yacht clubs changing with the times? Not the 106-year-old Royal Vancouver Yacht Club , the Jericho Beach home to Vancouver’s millionaires and their tanned, taut trust-fund daughters. RVYC won’t divulge their membership fees, because presumably, if you have to ask, you can’t afford it. 3811 Point Grey Rd., 604-224-1344.

Royal Yacht Squadron in England

The rich and famous are not merely looking for the best place to anchor their yachts; they are also seeking out exclusive memberships in stunning destinations, all offering luxury amenities and, of course, bragging rights. These exclusive yachting clubs with often outrageous initiation fees, provide luxurious clubhouses, and provide accommodations for yachties who want to get their land legs. Most of them provide high-end concierge service to its members as well as Michelin-star quality restaurants and more.

Yacht Clubs have been recognized in the Platinum Clubs of America elections for more than 20 years. According to the Platinum Club, “Recognition in the following categories is important in the selection of Platinum status; Tradition, history, and heritage, a respected membership, excellence in amenities, exceptional service, adapting to changing times, and overall experience.

I spoke with the President of Club Leaders Forum, David V. Smith, about the selection, and he says, “we created an alphabetical selection this time as opposed to by rank because we felt that it was challenging to compare a yacht club in Ireland with a yacht club in Singapore, as amenities, location and facilities do vary quite a lot. The yachting and boating world is a different and unique culture, typically a little more relaxed and not as formal as country clubs and golf clubs. However, many of the world’s finest yacht clubs have wonderful history and traditions, with a great sense of camaraderie among their members. Certain yacht clubs were selected by the Panel not necessarily for their facilities and amenities but in their recognition of hosting world class sailing regattas and events.”

Here are the top 50 most exclusive yacht clubs worldwide being awarded the ultimate Platinum Status for 2021.

How Much is a Yacht Club Membership? 3 Common Price Ranges

Dinner table set onboard a yacht with the text "how much is a yacht club membership?" superimposed over the image

The cost of an annual yacht club membership can vary widely depending on several factors, such as the location of the club, the amenities offered, the exclusivity of the membership, and the size of the yacht being accommodated. We’ve compiled a set of guidelines below to help you estimate what you can expect to pay for an annual yacht club membership.

Local or Less Exclusive Yacht Clubs

Afternoon party at a local yacht club

These clubs might offer basic amenities such as docking facilities, a clubhouse, and some social events. Annual fees can range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. Membership fees could be as low as $500 to $2,000 per year.

Mid-Range Yacht Clubs:

Mid-range yacht club facility

These clubs may offer more extensive amenities, including high-quality dining facilities, repair and maintenance services, fitness centers, and a busy calendar of social and boating activities. Annual fees for these clubs can range from $3,000 to $10,000 or more.

Prestigious or Exclusive Yacht Clubs

Yacht party during sunset among members of a prestigious yacht club in Miami

The most exclusive yacht clubs, often located in prime locations with extensive facilities and services, can have annual membership fees that are significantly higher. These can range from $10,000 to $30,000 or more per year, with some of the most elite clubs costing even more. Additionally, these clubs might have initiation fees that can range from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

It’s also important to note that many yacht clubs have additional costs beyond the annual membership dues. These can include initiation fees for new members, monthly minimum spending requirements at the club’s facilities, and additional fees for docking, storage, and maintenance services.

Additional Considerations

Some yacht clubs require yacht ownership as a prerequisite before being accepted into the club. Hence, while the yacht club membership itself might only be between $500 and $2,000, the true price of a yacht club membership might be tied to the cost of ownership of your yacht as well.

Bottom Line: Simply Ask If Interested

If you’re interested in joining a yacht club, make a list of yacht clubs that you might be interested in joining, and reach out to them via email or phone to get the most accurate and up-to-date information. Most yacht club members are quite friendly and are willing to help those who are interested in joining.

We wish you good luck in your yacht club search, and hope that you were able to find this article helpful.

What are the Cheapest Yacht Clubs?

The cheapest yacht clubs charge just under $1,000 per year for membership. While this does give you access to different types of experiences, you may be disappointed by the overall amenities.

Some yacht clubs are known for their extravagant country club styles that help you to embrace a particular lifestyle. They include Olympic-sized swimming pools, state-of-the-art tennis courts, and fine dining.

Everything has a beautiful waterfront view. It can feel like you are in the middle of an idyllic paradise without ever even having to leave the shore. If this is what you can gain from the most expensive yacht clubs, you should set your expectations much lower for the cheaper yacht clubs.

The cheaper yacht clubs lack the community aspect of these exclusive options. They feature dry slips and the occasional party, but not much more.

Some of them may have the feel of a county park with some picnic benches, outdoor grills, and a moderately sized swimming pool. Expect a much more casual atmosphere when you choose to go with a cheaper yacht club.

It is even possible that they are simply “paper yacht clubs” that do not even maintain a physical building of their own.

How Much Do the Most Expensive Yacht Clubs Cost to Join?

The most expensive yacht clubs can vary a great deal in price. Most of them will cost between $3,000 and $4,000 per year. However, you can certainly find more exclusive clubs that will cost above and beyond this.

Keep in mind that these more expensive clubs generally are not open to the public. They are offered by invitation only and you must have a member sponsor you to be considered for entrance.

When you are paying for a more expensive yacht club, you should make sure that you are really going to get your money’s worth. These expensive clubs promote a certain type of elegant lifestyle.

Make sure that you are planning to take advantage of all the amenities available from one of these clubs before you sink too much money into the membership fees. The social aspect of these expensive yacht clubs is extremely important.

If you plan to simply rent a boat from time to time, you might be able to go with a cheaper yacht club.

What Is Generally Included in the Membership Fee for Yacht Clubs?

Have you been wondering why you should join a yacht club? Many potential members want to know what they can expect from their membership fees before they commit to a year-long contract. There are many advantages to signing up for a membership with a well-known yacht club.

Amenities and Activities

First and foremost, you get access to activities and cruises planned by board members. These might be various sailing activities, dinners, get-togethers, tennis matches, or other events that take up a lazy Sunday afternoon.

You also gain access to any amenities that surround the yacht club’s marina. For many programs, this means a fitness center, pool, and tennis courts. Several locations also offer fine dining, meeting rooms, and more.

It is like a private oasis where you can get away from the hustle and bustle of the regular world. Time moves slowly when you’re enjoying the amenities here.

Many yacht clubs have programs that introduce children (and adults!) to sailing. Take classes to learn more about improving your technique, sailing safety, and other important aspects of life on the open water.

Access to the Fleet

The main reason why most people join yacht clubs is to be able to rent out boats instead of purchasing their own. Joining a yacht club may give you access to an entire fleet of yachts that can be reserved for a day or weeks at a time. Some yacht clubs allow you to rent boats for up to ten days at a time.

Others do not allow you to rent out ships. They are primarily geared toward individuals who already own a yacht or will own a yacht in the future. Make sure you know the difference in advance.

vancouver yacht club membership fees

Are There any Additional Costs Besides the Membership Fees?

Unfortunately, the membership fees are not the only cost associated with joining a yacht club. Most of the clubs in the United States also have a one-time initial fee that tends to cost thousands of dollars. Many will range from $1,500 to $5,000 depending on the location and the exclusivity of the yacht club.

This one-time fee should be the only additional money you pay except for fuel. Most yacht clubs do not cover the cost of the fuel used in the ship during your rental if renting is an option. Be prepared for what this could cost you.

If you cause damage to the ship, you can also expect some out-of-pocket costs. Insurance should cover the damage, but you will likely be asked to cover the cost of the deductible.

Be sure to inquire about how much you may be on the hook for before you sign up for any particular yacht club. Accidents can happen, even to the most experienced sailors. Make sure that you can afford the mishap in advance.

Is a Yacht Club Membership Right for You?

Understanding what the real cost of a yacht club membership is can be the first step toward determining if this is right for you. Many people love the luxuries available through the more expensive yacht clubs, but they may not be able to afford it. Consider what is most important in a club to you before deciding to sign on the dotted line for an annual membership.

Vancouver Homes

Top private clubs in vancouver, gentlemen at the vancouver club.

Private clubs were first formed in the 18th century in London for aristocratic gentlemen as a place where they could relax, do business, or mingle with their friends. As Britain’s middle classes became richer, they wanted their own clubs. These days, many private clubs are cosmopolitan affairs, counting women members and seeking creative professionals for an edgy atmosphere. Canadian private clubs also have a long history, with a few longstanding clubs with wide-ranging membership criteria. Here’s our pick of private clubs in Vancouver.

The Vancouver Club

915 west hastings street established in 1889.

The oldest club in our vibrant city, full of old-world charm and looking to the future at the same time, The Vancouver Club can be found in a heritage building that’s a fine piece of real estate. It was the old gentlemen’s club at first, but it changed in the 1990s when it allowed women to become full members. Members are people from industries of every stripe, from diverse local companies and young creative organizations to global ventures.

This club is the best place to dine, play, relax, and connect with other professionals who are the creative energy of the West Coast. You may fully enjoy your adult world, as kids are not allowed , except Friday nights in the Grill, or on special occasions like Christmas or Easter and the annual Princess Ball (where you can make your little girl’s dream come true). The Vancouver club boasts its own in-house barbershop , wine- and spirit-tasting rooms, fine cuisine led by the expert passion of executive chef Sean Cousins , Bar III — the perfect place to play poker or have a cocktail, and the $2 million wine cellar (the club is one of the largest wine buyers in BC) that can no doubt satisfy everyone.

Dessert Table at The Vancouver Club

Of course, there are rules that need to be followed. Unless you have a private room for a business meeting, you cannot have your papers on your table. Always keep the dress code in mind; business casual is the minimum, so no denim or sportswear. Women are allowed to wear pants (but dresses are preferred), while men have to wear a jacket (or blazer) in the Georgian Room . Leave your cell at home, but if you are too attached to this piece of technology, keep in mind that cellphone use is banned outside of the special phone booths. If you think this is exactly what you’re looking for and that you’ll fit right in, you will require a proposer, a seconder, and three references.

Barber Shop at Vancouver Club

Other Perks: Men’s Black Tie Lobster dinner, a port and chocolate tasting, live jazz in Bar 3, father and sons dinner

Fees: Entrance starts at $68 a month for three years and monthly dues start at $104 , details available online

Terminal City Club

837 west hastings street established in 1892.

Terminal City Club has always played an important role in the city, with its members making significant contributions to the business and political activity of the City of Vancouver and the Province of British Columbia. Much like the Vancouver Club, this club is also a mix of history and modernism, and everything here screams luxury. It’s a favourite place for Vancouver’s finance sector.

Reading Room at Terminal City Club

This club is rather expensive, but it is for rich people who have money to burn, right? The pretty steep coin gains access the to club’s facilities: two restaurants, a fitness centre, a lounge, The Lions pub (a gorgeous piece of Gastown history), a snooker room (everything here is so British), a reading room downstairs with beautiful oak desks and armchairs, and the cherry on top, a 25-metre ozonated (chlorine-free), glass-encased pool with views of the North Shore Mountain Range.

Terminal City Club has a strict dress code as well: business attire is a must, and you are not allowed to use your cellphone. Play it cool and go back to the good old days by using a small telephone booth to make your calls. Kids are allowed , and for some this might be a downside. Membership is obtained through the acquisition of a common share, and all applicants are presented to the Board of Directors for approval and are then put forward to the membership for balloting.

Swimming Pool at Terminal City Club

Tip: Book a night at Terminal City’s boutique hotel (so what if you don’t live far away?), which has 143 excellent/very good reviews out of 159, and get a guest entry to the club.

Other Perks: the 1892 Restaurant with incredibly flavourful cuisine and an award-winning wine list, over 160 reciprocal arrangements with clubs worldwide

Fees: Initiation fee starts at $8,849 with $246.50 in monthly dues for people over 45

Hollyburn Country Club

950 cross creek road, west vancouver established in 1963.

This Hamptons-style club situated mountainside on 42 acres of West Vancouver’s renowned British Properties is probably the best fitness club in B.C. and a key to a better and healthier life. Besides sports, this is also a private hub for dining, entertaining, socializing, and business. The Hollyburn Country Club caters to the modern family and its demanding lifestyle, offering swimming pools, twenty-five tennis courts, seven squash courts, three ice rinks, fitness facilities, a wellness centre, and many lessons to choose from: badminton, hockey, karate, figure skating, curling, cycling, and more.

It’s a great place to take your kids, and if they’re not crazy for sports, put them in the homework room, where they are taken care of, and as a reward for good grades at school, you can arrange a birthday party here for them. The food is great, and the view of the city is stunning — you can choose to eat on the outdoor deck, taking in the Burrard Inlet and Mount Baker.

Fitness at Hollyburn Country Club

Other Perks: 90 affiliated clubs worldwide and spring and summer camps for kids (so you can have a break and enjoy the facilities yourself)

Fees: $45,000 for a lifetime family membership (plus applicable taxes) and monthly dues starting at $277

The Royal Vancouver Yacht Club

3811 point grey road (the main clubhouse) established in 1903.

Different from the other listed clubs (but worth mentioning), The Royal Vancouver Yacht Club is based on the principles of tradition, volunteerism, and a love of yachting. It has much to offer everyone who’s into yachts and sailing (and more). Without doubt, this is also one of the best kept secrets in Vancouver for fine dining and they have an excellent wine selection. The Club has nine yachting facilities, including two Vancouver marinas (the Jericho Clubhouse accommodates a wide range of club and private functions and Coal Harbour Marina & Restaurant provides simple breakfast and lunch in a relaxed atmosphere) and seven offshore stations. Another bonus is The Nautical Library , where members can enjoy books by yachters for yachters, the RVYC community for women, and the many yacht programs and events.

vancouver yacht club membership fees

INFORMATION FOR PROSPECTIVE MEMBERS

EHYC Membership Application

EHYC was formed on June 1969 as a non-profit organization and is registered under the Societies Act. EHYC will always be a small yacht club because we are limited to the present number of approximately 85 mooring positions and by a desire to remain small and friendly. Our members come from all walks of life and use the club to enjoy the full range of activities associated with sail and power boats.

The Club offers a number of benefits and advantages to prospective members:

Protected mooring facilities with a resident Superintendent. The moorage is protected by a substantial floating breakwater system. Water and electricity are available on all docks.

EHYC’s clubhouse (situated on the rock bluff overlooking Eagle Harbour and the Straits), is well furnished and a wonderful location for our club social events. We have an active social program, and because the club is small, it is easy to get to know fellow members who share a similar passion.

We have a racing fleet, club cruises (sail and power), keen fishermen, paddle boarders and kayakers.

Ideal location – for sailboats, the summer Wednesday evening and winter Snowflake races start right outside Eagle Harbour, and for fishermen there is good winter mooching a few yards from our breakwater. We are adjacent to Howe Sound with easy access to the Gulf Islands.

A very active Junior sailing training program which operates in July and August.

Because the Club has a small membership base, we only have two staff. The breakwater and floats require regular maintenance, and much of this is carried out by members work parties during the weekends. New members should therefore be aware that they may be called upon to participate in a work party – usually twice a year for half a day on a Saturday outside of the boating season.  It’s a great way to get to know fellow members.

As noted above, the Club can accommodate approximately 85 boats, depending on the blend of boat lengths at any given moment. Available moorage is allocated according to the Bylaws and Regulations (see Regulations C). A waiting list of members with their membership number is is kept in the office. The Club makes no guarantee as to when a new member will obtain moorage, since this depends entirely on the turnover rate, which varies from time to time.  Moorage is restricted to active member only and in case of a jointly owned boat, both owners must be active members. The maximum dimensions for any boat moored at EHYC are an overall length of 38.0 ft (including all appendages) and a beam of 12.0 ft. Charges for moorage which are based on a sliding scale depending on boat length are adjusted from time but are generally significant lower than commercial Vancouver marinas.

JOINING THE CLUB

Each prospective member must complete the application form provided in the link above and send it to the address noted at the foot of this page, together with a cheque for the entrance fee. Entrances fee for Active members may be paid in two instalments – one half initially and the balance at interest of 10% per year on the first anniversary date or upon obtaining moorage, whichever happens sooner.

All new members should have their application signed by two sponsors who are members of the Club. If you do not know anyone in the Club, please send in your application form to the Membership Secretary who will meet with you and introduce you to club members who can act and sign as sponsors.

We thank you for your interest in EHYC  and we look forward to having you and your family as members of our Club. If you need further information please contact the EHYC office ([email protected]) during business hours or Membership Secretary.

FAQ's – Membership
All membership applications are required to be submitted to the Membership Director via the Office Manager. Memberships will be subject to a vote from the Executive Committee, following an interview with the Membership Director and a Past Commodore of the Club.

Our full membership offers:

At this time, we cannot advise of the length of wait for membership, as new invites are made only as current members vacate their membership. New invites are typically actioned in February-March of each new year.

Our Community membership is an annual membership that may be renewed each year as desired, with the approval of the Executive Committee. Ideal for those locals who do not own a boat.
This membership provides: It does NOT provide:

As we are not limited with the number of Community members, these memberships are processed monthly. The time taken to have an application approved will depend on the date your application is received, your availability for an interview, and the voting in of your membership at the once-monthly Executive meetings.

Yes – if approved by the Membership Director, this is a great way to engage with and meet fellow club members and start to make use of the clubhouse. This is the perfect segway into an Active membership!

FAQ's - Moorage
Moorage is only available to current Active, Senior or Life Members of Deep Cove Yacht & Sport Club, and to our reciprocal club members. There is no moorage available for Community members or non-members.

If you are looking for public moorage, you may wish to contact the following public marinas:

No – we do not have a waitlist for moorage. Available slips are posted for club members to apply for based on a seniority system.

Unfortunately, there is no accurate answer to this question. It depends on which slip becomes available and how many members apply for it. The club advises new members that moorage is still in high demand, and you should expect a significant wait.

A notice of a moorage vacancy will be posted on the club notice board, and be advertised on the club website and in the club newsletter. Interested members have 2 weeks to sign their name and seniority date to the moorage posting list. 2 weeks following the moorage posting, the Dock Master will assign the slip to the most senior member on the list, providing their vessel is a fit for the posted slip.

Seniority is the date of your membership acceptance as an Active member.
