In season 1 episode 11 of The Real Ghostbusters, titled "Citizen Ghost," the team is faced with a supernatural mystery when an old friend returns from the dead. After a freak accident occurs in their headquarters, the ghost of their former colleague and mentor, Captain Jack, appears. However, Captain Jack is not the typical ghost - he is able to communicate clearly with the Ghostbusters and is not hostile or dangerous.

The team realizes that Captain Jack's appearance was triggered by their old uniforms, which he had designed. When the uniforms were damaged in the accident, he was summoned back. The Ghostbusters are thrilled to see him, and use their scientific equipment to help him overcome his ghostly state.

As they work to help Captain Jack, they discover that he has a mission to complete. He had never crossed over to the other side because he needed to stop a dangerous ghost from taking over the city. The Ghostbusters agree to help him complete his mission, and work tirelessly to track down the dangerous ghost.

Along the way, they encounter a number of challenges. The dangerous ghost proves to be elusive, and the Ghostbusters must use all of their skills and expertise to track him down. They also encounter other ghosts who are eager to help or hinder them in their mission.

Despite these challenges, the Ghostbusters persevere. Along the way, they learn more about Captain Jack's past and his motivations. They also learn about the dangerous ghost, who turns out to be more than just an average spook.

Ultimately, the Ghostbusters are able to confront the dangerous ghost and put a stop to his nefarious plans. They also help Captain Jack complete his mission, allowing him to finally cross over to the other side.

The Real Ghostbusters

  • View history

The Real Ghostbusters was an Emmy-Nominated American animated television series based on the hit 1984 film Ghostbusters . The series ran from 1986 to 1991, and was produced by Columbia Pictures Television (now Sony Pictures Television), DiC Entertainment and Coca-Cola Telecommunications. The series continues the adventures of paranormal investigators Dr. Peter Venkman , Dr. Egon Spengler , Winston Zeddemore , Dr. Ray Stantz , their secretary Janine Melnitz and their mascot ghost Slimer . In 1988 during the show's six year run it was retooled with the Slimer! series that was sandwiched around The Real Ghostbusters and was titled Slimer! and The Real Ghostbusters . The show also received a new opening sequence (which was used for the remainder of the series) when it was re-titled as well. The series continued to develop the franchise's mythology. In " Partners in Slime ", Vigo was mentioned, confirming Ghostbusters II is in the continuity of the animated series. However, due to many reasons the show started the Ghostbusters Animated Timeline Canon .

During the show's run (September 13, 1986 – October 22, 1991) a series of comics were made: NOW Comics- The Real Ghostbusters Series for North America, and Marvel Comics Ltd- The Real Ghostbusters Series for the United Kingdom. A Toy line by Kenner was produced through its run as well. There was even a short lived Magazine . In 1997, the franchise was revived with Extreme Ghostbusters . A group of new Ghostbusters joined Egon, Janine and Slimer, who helped to bridge both cartoons.

The series' origin is told in the episode " Citizen Ghost ", which is a flashback episode. Peter reveals that the suits were replaced with new ones that were in new colors. Gozer was taken out but the old suits had ecto-plasmic residue and Peter was supposed to destroy them. Also in that episode, it is revealed that Slimer stuck around the firehouse and while Peter didn't like him, the others after a few days grew to like him, as he was harmless and valuable to research. Ray names him, to spite Peter, Slimer. At the end of the episode the Ghostbusters are in serious trouble with ghostly versions of themselves that wanted them out of business. Slimer wore them out as they fired at him wasting their ecto energy. Because of that, the Ghostbusters were able to capture the ghosts. Slimer earned his spot as a pet and friend of the Ghostbusters.

" Take Two " explained in a way, the differences between the cartoon and the film . The film according to the episode was made based on events in the cartoon. Inside jokes about the film are all over the episode.

Development [ ]

Animated02ghostbusters

The Ghostbusters Team: Egon Spengler, Peter Venkman, Janine Melnitz, Winston Zeddemore, Ray Stantz, and Slimer (in the background behind Janine).

In late 1985, Richard Raynis told Kevin Altieri that DiC was going to pitch an animated series based on Ghostbusters to ABC. Due to an "incredibly quick turnaround," there was no planning during production on the pilot promo. Altieri and Eddie Fitzgerald story boarded scenes as the ideas came to them and had no character models to work off of. [1] A short pilot episode was produced, but never aired in full. Scenes of the pilot can be seen in TV promos that aired prior to the beginning of the series. As with most pilots, the short episode has several striking differences from the finished product. For the most part, the differences come down to a greater faithfulness to the movie: Peter Venkman's design bears a greater resemblance to Bill Murray , the Ghostbusters still use their original uniforms, and Slimer appears as a gluttonous bad guy as he does in the movie. Certain scenes from the pilot would be edited and used in the show's intro, most notably the encounter at the end with the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man . Other scenes from the pilot, including a shot of Ray waking up from bed with a Mr. Staypuft doll, the team sliding down the fire pole in silhouette, and a skeletal Red Baron laughing as he flies across the sky, would later be used in the special opening sequence for the 1989 Real Ghostbusters prime time Halloween special, " The Halloween Door ".

Maurice LaMarche , the voice of Egon Spengler, described that even though the auditioners did not want him to impersonate Harold Ramis , he did so and got the part. LaMarche mentioned that, supposedly, Bill Murray asked why Lorenzo Music 's voice sounded like Garfield and not like himself, and this may have weighed in the replacing of Music, with Dave Coulier replacing him after 78 episodes. This is ironic considering that Bill Murray took over the role of Garfield for the live-action movies. Ernie Hudson was the only actor from the film who auditioned to reprise his role, Winston Zeddemore, for the animated series, but he lost to Arsenio Hall . Marsha Goodman was told by the producers to use Arsenio Hall because he was funnier and sillier. [2]

Unproduced Scripts [ ]

  • Premise: Dr. Teufel (meaning devil) ran a carnival and trapped children in his Fun House a la Pied Piper.
  • What happened: The script was donated to the "cause" the animation writers were fighting with the labor board for recognition to be admitted into the WGA. J. Michael Straczynski had to prove to the board that story editing and writing co-existed in the world of animation as it does in episodic television writing Since the 1930s, animation writers were "required" to belong to the Cartoonists Guild. This Ghostbusters script helped to establish a new precedent and animation writers were finally recognized by the WGA through the Animation Writers Caucus.

Unproduced Premises and Outlines [ ]

  • Premise: Set in New Orleans during the last day before the end of Mardi Gras [5] and intended for Season 3. It is the only unused outline done by Straczynski. Egon was only interested in the Twenty-Third Annual Symposium On The Fantastic, while the others were there strictly for Mardis Gras which they missed out on last time they were in the area. [6] They earn the ire of a swami named Kishnu Wannaberichrich. [7] Ray has a new romantic interest named Elizabeth Metairie but she turns out to be a ghost who is tied to the local tragedy that involved a steamship named Lady M. that exploded and sank in 1853. [8]
  • The premise is included in "The Complete Book of Scriptwriting" by J. Michael Straczynski on pages 221 to 226.

Unproduced Pitches [ ]

  • Jean-Marc Lofficier and Randy Lofficier tried to do a third episode. J. Michael Straczynski liked some ideas they pitched but they ran out of time and the show ended. [9]

The Other Ghostbusters [ ]

"The Real" was added to the title over a dispute with Filmation . After the success of the film, a TV series based on the Ghostbusters began production. At the same time The Real Ghostbusters was being created, Filmation was making a cartoon known simply as Ghostbusters , a revamp of the 1970s live-action series . Despite rumors to the contrary, Columbia was allowed to use the name Ghostbusters for its cartoon, but added "The Real" to snub Filmation. In the episode "The Spirit of Aunt Lois", Dr. Bassingham, a charlatan spiritualist wore an outfit similar to that of Jake Kong. With character designs by Jim McDermott, the animated characters were dramatically redesigned from the way the same characters looked in the movie due to likeness-rights issues.

Season Guide & Episode Guide [ ]

For a list of the episodes of the Real Ghostbusters click here .

Main Characters [ ]

Samhain01

Samhain was a major foe of the Ghostbusters on the show, as well as one of the few recurring villains

Dr. Peter Venkman [ ]

Dr. Peter Venkman (voiced by Lorenzo Music seasons 1-2 and Dave Coulier seasons 3-7) is the group's first-among-equals. While not their official leader, Venkman often makes the decision whether or not they will take a case. He also provides comic relief and is usually nominated for tasks no one else wants to do.

Dr. Egon Spengler [ ]

Dr. Egon Spengler (voiced by Maurice LaMarche ) a scientific genius, is the primary source of expertise the group uses to understand (and many times combat) the ethereal realm. A skilled theorist, in many episodes Egon formulates the solution when all hope seems lost.

Dr. Ray Stantz [ ]

Dr. Ray Stantz (voiced by Frank Welker ) is portrayed as an excitable jack-of-all-trades. He is second only to Egon in sheer intelligence, and leans towards practical applications of science as opposed to Egon's pure research – the engineer to Egon's physicist. He is also a child at heart, cheerful and optimistic (and rather enamored of cartoons and stuffed animals). As the only one of the four who can reliably understand what Egon is talking about, he is usually the one to put his theories into practice.

Winston Zeddemore [ ]

Winston Zeddemore (voiced by Arsenio Hall seasons 1-3 and Buster Jones seasons 4-7) is the courage and straight-man of the group; his accuracy with the proton gun is his forte. Of all the Ghostbusters, Winston Zeddemore has the most subtle character development; it is hinted that he is an avid reader and the descendant of a powerful African bloodline. Sometimes his last name is misspelled "Zeddmore"

Janine Melnitz [ ]

Janine Melnitz (voiced by Laura Summer seasons 1-2 and Kath Soucie seasons 3-7) is the secretary of the Ghostbusters and has an interest in Egon.

Louis Tully [ ]

Louis Tully (voiced by Rodger Bumpass seasons 5-6) is the accountant for the Ghostbusters. Was put in the cartoon to follow along with Ghostbusters II movie.

Slimer (voiced by Frank Welker ) is the pet of the Ghostbusters and is the only ghost that will stay still for Egon to test and study. In the Kenner toy line known also as the "Green Ghost".

Foreign Markets‎‎ [ ]

The Real Ghostbusters Series, much like the films was translated into many languages and with such things, many aspects had to be localized. Slimer's name being one of those aspects.

References to the Movies [ ]

  • Dana Barrett does not appear in the series.
  • In the aftermath of the party, Peter refers to the Ghostbusters' first encounter with Slimer, seen in the movie. [61]
  • Peter mentions their usual fee for standard capture and containment is $1500, much less than their $5000 charge for catching Slimer in the first movie . [62]
  • As Peter jumps into the Boogieman's portal, he tells Egon, "See you on the other side, Egon." [63]
  • "Take Two" is the episode that directly dealt with the movie to cartoon issue. The making of the movie took place during the animated Ghostbusters show.
  • It is also one of two episodes that explains the differences between the cartoon and the movie (something rarely done with animated series based on films), the other being "Citizen Ghost".
  • The Ghostbusters are mystified by the names of the actors supposedly playing them; they claim that they've never even heard of them and Winston thought it was a law firm at first. [64]
  • At the end of the episode it has a bit of Ghostbusters on the screen. About the end of Chapter 1: Start to the beginning of Chapter 2: Shock the Nerd is seen on screen.
  • The voice of Bill Murray was dubbed during the movie.
  • When Venkman sees Bill Murray onscreen, he comments "he doesn't look a thing like me." Which, in a way, is true. [65]
  • Peter tells Cynthia Crawford how and why Slimer came to live with the Ghostbusters, in events immediately following their film encounter with Gozer.
  • One of the photos hanging on the wall near Peter's office is of the Firehouse, after it blew up during the events of the movie.
  • In storyboards, deleted from the episode, the Shandor Building is alluded to in script excerpts. When Peter starts his story, the scene was supposed to start on one of the frames in his office which had a photo of the building after it blew up then shift to the frame of the Firehouse in ruins. [66] [67]
  • Peter instantly recognizes the green ghost as the one who slimed him at the (Sedgewick) Hotel. [68]
  • Peter alludes to the Ghostbusters' first encounter with Slimer and getting slimed. [69]
  • The Mayor also mentions the manifestations of the Terror Dogs and the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man . [70]
  • After the first meeting with the Mayor, Egon's plan prompts Ray to tell Peter to give Egon a chocolate bar. [71] This is in reference to the post-New York City Public Library scene in the movie.
  • Peter offers to tell the Diva how he saved the world, a likely reference to the movie. [72]
  • Peter quotes his "Heat 'em up!" line as heard in the movie , and the other three Ghostbusters respond "Smoking!" accordingly. [73] [74]
  • The ABC Theater has a showing of "Ghostbusters" which was premiered, in-universe, at the end of the episode "Take Two".
  • Peter says, "I've always wanted to do this." While in the restaurant, the same thing he says at the Sedgewick Hotel in the movie. [75] Instead of pulling the table cloth, he throws a plate of pasta at a ghost.
  • Jon mistakenly calls the Ghostbusters the " Ghost Smashers " three times in the episode. This was the original name of the Ghostbusters movie. [76]
  • Uncle Horace reads aloud the Ghostbusters' phone number, NO GHOST or 664-4678. This marks the first time the phone number is stated or seen in the animated series. Previously, in the first Ghostbusters movie, it was 555-2368 but the 664-4678 phone number was first used in Ghostbusters: The Supernatural Spectacular , a novelization of the first movie, as 1-212-NO-GHOST. [77]
  • The opening shot of a focus on the library's lion statue is similar to the opening shot of the first film.
  • In the script, when Ecto-1 departed the Firehouse for the library, there was an exchange between Ray and Peter. Peter referred to the Library ghost in the dialogue. [78]
  • Egon references Gozer as the team departs from the library. [79]
  • The man on the train says he would have thought Venkman was an astronaut. The man at the Sedgewick hotel in the first movie asks Venkman, "What are you supposed to be, some kind of a cosmonaut?"
  • Winston voiced his regret over answering the ad the Ghostbusters placed during the events of the movie. [80]
  • The Ghostbusters speculate the surge in paranormal activity could be hailing the return of Gozer. [81] [82]
  • Janine refers to the Containment Unit as the Storage Facility like in the first film. [83]
  • Egon mentions Gozer. [84]
  • Winston mentions the giant Twinkie analogy from the first movie . [85]
  • A larger Terror Dog pursues the Ghostbusters. Winston comments he hasn't seen a Terror Dog in a long time, most likely referencing the movie. [86]
  • Walter Peck reveals that he lost his job after the events of the movie. [87] [88]
  • A Terror Dog briefly invades the Firehouse.
  • When the Ghostbusters pull up to the New York City Public Library, Peter reminisces about how their first case was there, as seen in the movie. [89]
  • The Ghost Governor has two large sized Terror Dogs.
  • When Ray and Egon conduct research at the New York City Public Library, there is construction going on, shown by a man working on scaffolding like in the movie.
  • Peter says, "Nice shootin' Tex!" to Winston. [90]
  • Peter says he's been waiting five years to slime Slimer. This is true, since he was first slimed by Slimer in the movie. [91]
  • J. Michael Straczynski, during a visual commentary, points out that the destruction of the Containment Unit is stylistically lifted from a similar scene in the first Ghostbusters film.
  • Brian O'Neal , the voice of Boogaloo, was also a member of the The Bus Boys . That group performed the song "Cleanin' Up The Town" from Ghostbusters and its soundtrack album . [92]
  • Egon mentions facing Gozer. [93]
  • Peter reminds Egon of the first case at the New York Public Library, and hopes for Egon's sake that the spirits in Heck House never saw the movie based upon that incident. [94]

Line reads: "Back in late 1985 Richard Raynis informed Kevin that DiC were going to pitch a show based on the movie Ghostbusters to the ABC network. Being a fan of the movie Kevin leapt at the chance to work on it. Due to the incredibly quick turnaround there was no planned structure to the promo; Kevin and Eddie literally drew scene after scene as the ideas came to them. Eddie storyboarded the Ghost walking down the street as a direct homage to John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever, while Kevin illustrated the heroes in many action-packed scrapes. The pair had no models to work with and based all of their designs on the movie, which is why in the storyboards the characters look like their movie counterparts, Winston even sporting a mustache!"
