Boston Medical Center Health System and Omicelo Create New Sustainability-Focused Venture, Oakwell

BOSTON – Boston Medical Center Health System (BMCHS), an integrated health system that combines clinical and operational excellence with health equity and access, has partnered with Omicelo, a sustainability-focused investment group, to form Oakwell, a comprehensive solution for health system sustainability and real estate optimization. The new company partners with hospitals and health systems to develop custom energy efficiency and consumption reduction programs that reduce spend, improve balance sheets, and free up capital that can be reinvested in patient care.  

Healthcare organizations are spending more than $60 billion annually on construction costs to meet patient demands, preserve fiscal wellbeing, increase real estate portfolio sustainability, and mitigate environmental hazards while considering changing regulations. Oakwell offers health systems custom sustainability and real estate strategies that reduce energy consumption and yield value and significant cost savings, freeing up capital that can be reinvested in clinical care and health system operations. Oakwell’s offerings can help mitigate challenges currently facing health systems, including patient access and capacity constraints. By 2035, Oakwell aims to create pathways for one million more people to gain access to quality care with the savings that the company will have produced for clients.  

Oakwell will leverage proven methods to empower health systems to conceptualize, implement, and meet climate and fiscal goals by leveraging BMCHS’ extensive experience and Omicelo’s data-driven approach to financial sustainability. To date, BMCHS’ sustainability-focused efforts have resulted in over $500 million in reduced costs and averted capital spending. Oakwell can support health systems in replicating this model.  

BMCHS is a nationally recognized leader in sustainability and environmental excellence as recognized by the Practice Greenhealth Top 25 Environmental Excellence Award. In 2023, BMCHS piloted Clean Power Prescription, a first-in-the-nation program that leverages the Low-Income Communities Bonus Credit of the federal Inflation Reduction Act to enable BMC providers to write patients a prescription for a reduced utility bill, supporting economic and environmental health and bringing low-income households the benefits of renewable solar power. Additionally, BMCHS was the first non-profit healthcare organization in the nation to issue sustainability bonds with a $232 million bond sale that financed extensive renovations to better support patient care.

Omicelo is a private investment group leveraging its capital and experience to scale a diverse portfolio of companies that are actively driving sustainability forward. Sustainability, as Omicelo defines it, is the ability to safeguard and increase access to high quality healthcare, viable housing, economic mobility opportunities, and a thriving environment.  

Oakwell’s founding board members include seasoned executives from Omicelo and BMCHS: Bob Biggio, senior vice president and chief sustainability and real estate officer of BMCHS; Joshua Pollard, managing partner and chief executive officer of Omicelo; and Kathy Feeney, managing partner and chief operating officer of Omicelo.

NIXON, IN MOSCOW, MET BY BREZHNEV; FIRST TALKS NEED

MOSCOW, June 27—President Nixon arrived here today to a warm welcome and began his third summit meeting with Leonid I. Brezhnev, the Soviet party chief.

The two leaders pledged after an initial meeting in the Kremlin to make their negotiations over the next five days serve the “strengthening of universal peace.” In an exchange of toasts tonight both expressed hope that significant progress could be made in the control of nuclear weapons. Mr. Brezhnev spoke out against opponents of Mr. Nixon's policy toward the Soviet Union.

“Our American guests know better and in more detail than we about those who oppose international détente, who favor whipping up the arms race and returning to the methods and mores of the cold war,” he said in a speech following a dinner in the Great Kremlin Palace.

Allusion to Pentagon

This was an evident reference to a debate in the United States in which some members of Congress and officials in the Government have expressed fears that the United StatesSoviet negotiations may give the Russians a military advantage.

Mr. Brezhnev also made it clear that he would like the Congress to enact Mr. Nixon's trade legislation, which would end the present discriminatory tariffs on Soviet goods. It has been blocked partly because of amendments that would require the Soviet Union to allow unrestricted emigration.

“The volume of trade has increased several times during the last two years,” Mr. Brezhnev said. “And several long‐term contracts have been signed. At the same time, we all know that much remains to be done here—both in the sense of making economic ties more balanced and stable, and in the sense of clearly establishing the principles of equality and respect for each other's interests in this area of relations.”

Personal Ties Stressed

Mr. Nixon, who followed with a toast, sought to put the negotiations on a personal basis.

Agreements already made, he said, “were possible because of a personal relationship that was established between the General Secretary and the President of the United States. And that personal relationship extends to the top officials in both of our governments.”

Yet Secretary of State Kissinger has cast a tone of pessimism over the prospects of a breakthrough in the control of nuclear weapons.

In a news conference yesterday in Brussels, where Mr. Nixon had conferred with West European leaders, Mr. Kissinger said several minor agreements had been worked out and would be signed here, but he said no permanent agreement on control of nuclear missiles would be reached and some basic questions of approach had to be explored by the two leaders.

The warm relationship that as grown between Mr. Brezhnev and Mr. Nixon during the last two years was the theme of opening‐day ceremonies. Soviet officials, in talks with reporters, made it plain that the Kremlin took a dim view of impeachment proceedings.

The two leaders held their first talk on substantive matters in Mr. Brezhnev's office, beginning at 6:30 P.M. and ending 70 minutes later. They then walked to St. George's Hall and a reception, where there was banter and joking.

While Mr. Brezhnev was guiding Mr. Nixon through the group, his hand under the President's left elbow, they passed Patrick J. Buchanan, a White House speech writer known for his conservative views.

“He's liberal, this man,” Mr. Nixon told his host.

When they reached Mr. Kissinger, Mr. Nixon remarked that his Secretary of State was “much more flexible than Grechko,” referring to Marshal Andrei A. Grechko, the Soviet Defense Minister.

Mr. Brezhnev, picking up the mood, said: “Let's wait and see. Results will show.”

Mr. Nixon then changed his approach, saying of Mr. Kissinger, “He's very tough.”

Mr. Brezhnev gave Mr. Kissinger a studied, theatrical glance and said slowly, “Yes, yes.”

Arms Gain Is the Key

In the remarks after the dinner, the two leaders stressed that progress had been made toward détente since the first agreements were signed two years ago in arms control, trade, agriculture, science and cultural exchanges.

Both agreed that, unless new steps, were made to slow the arms race, progress in other areas would not amount to much.

“If we fail to solve this task,” Mr. Brezhnev said, “all other achievements in the development of mutual relations may lose their significance.”

Mr. Nixon, speaking of the need to reduce the danger of war, said, “It is this way that two peoples with different systems of government can establish relationships that will not be broken in the future.”

While Mr. Nixon expressed hope of reaching significant agreements, it was noted that he came with a limited staff. There was only one cabinet member, Mr. Kissinger. No high official was here from the Defense Department, even though Secretary James R. Schlesinger has expressed substantial disagreement with Mr. Kissinger on nuclear warheads.

The 5th edition of the International exhibition of yachts and boats –  Moscow Boat Show , held from March 20 to 25, 2012 will be hosted by the first pavilion of Crocus Expo International Exhibition Centre. This popular show is dedicated not only to the specialists of the market segment and professional sportsmen but also to those who consider sailing sport to be their hobby and well cherished dream.

The project is the result of joint efforts of the Crocus Expo International Exhibition Centre and the National Marine Industry Association. The event is supported by Aston Martin Moscow, Burevestnik Group logistics department and the Yachting specialized magazine. Moscow Boat Show is the largest project in Russia presenting all the best in the world of yachting.

The exhibition annually shows high level of attendance and has already proved as significant and noteworthy event in the world of yachts and boats. Every year new exhibitors join the list of participants, genuine “sharks” of yachting business, the quantity of visitors considerably increases and the exposition becomes more sated and diverse.

The best companies professionally involved into yachting and small navigation business – 180 exhibitors from 17 regions of the Russian Federation and 15 countries traditionally presented the best and the newest in the world of yachting at 2011 edition: from design and facilitation of vessels and up to cruising and training courses for beginning skippers. In 2011 the overall exhibit space comprised 18 000 sq m. More than 25 000 visitors came to the show.

This year the exposition space will increase up to 30 000 sq m and will be accommodated in 4 exhibition halls. The scale of the project confirms confident positions of its positive development. The organizers will try to arrange a genuine fiesta of water on land!

Quite a number of foreign exhibitors will participate in the show. Foreign companies show increasing interest to yachting business in Russia.

Moscow Boat Show provides the perfect platform from which to preview new products, evaluate market trends, and establish long-lasting and commercially profitable partnerships. Despite the dynamic changes taking place in Russia and the rapid growth of the yachting sector, the show continues to complement and reflect the industry’s demand and is a promotional opportunity not to be missed!
