"Nirvana", a 1987 43 foot Irwin Mk III, has had only two owners within the same family since her purchase. She has always been sailed a lot and regular maintenance performed to insure great cruising reliability. Never neglected, she has been hauled every year for below waterline maintenance. "Nirvana" has had many significant replacements that will save her new owner a lot of money and worry for the future cruising years. Consider these recent significant replacements and upgrades: -2009 New 75 hp Yanmar 4 cylinder turbodiesel(New exhaust hose, waterlift muffler, seacock, and thruhull fitting). -2014 New stainless steel rubrail portside -2013 New shrouds, backstay, forestay, and topping lift -2013 New vhf antenna, masthead light, anchor light and spreader light -2013 All diesel fuel was removed from the 105 gal tank and the tank thoroughly cleaned to remove all foreign matter. The topsides are polished with 3M Marine Compound and Finishishing Material and protected with two coats of wax to keep that new boat shine on the gelcoat. New zincs are installed. Inspection of the cutlass bearing and rudder bearing is performed with replacement if necessary. All running rigging has been replaced within the last five years. The brightwork on the deck is varnished and beautiful. Most surfaces have six coats. When you go below decks you won't get that old boat mildew smell because she is used often, well ventilated, and the central heat and air conditioning system is used throughout the year for proper climate control. Most of the teak surfaces(bulkheads, doors, and trim) are also finished with several coats of varnish to seal and protect the wood. The cabin sole is also varnished throughout the vessel. More specific information and pictures will soon follow this listing.

Irwin 43 - Bluewater or not ???

  • Add to quote
Robby Barlow said: Look forward to hear/see your opinions, leaving apart external components like captain & crew which 1/2 the time only ruin a good boat. Click to expand...

No offense meant, but I suppose you haven't sailed much along the s.e. coast of spain. For most people here I nice days sailing consists of buying a roast chicken, leaving the marina to anchor in the habour basin, eat, siesta and a return to the mooring. I think a yacht deserves more.

I passed by that area some years ago on my trip from Norway to Malaysia the long way: Atlantic -Panama -Pacific. You'll find my homepage in the 'profile'. I would say I got what both I and my boat 'deserved' on the trip.

43 irwin sailboat

Robby...I owned an Irwin 44 which is essentially the same hull and build standard...and have been on Irwin 43's. They are great liveaboard boats, and decent performing coastal cruisers. We cruised happily all the way up and down the East Coast of the US and Bahamas twice in ours. They are completely NOT blue water boats as there is too much flex in the hull in big seas. I would look at Kelly-Peterson44's and Whitby/Brewer42's for CC boats near the 100k range at the sacrifice of some living space. You will be looking at older boats in these models to hit your price point.

Geez haffiman, we're you in a bad mood when you responded? There was no personal attack in Robby's remarks whatsoever, they were completely generic (he even inserted a smile face, for Pete's sake!). Besides, doesn't saying "captain and crew which 1/2 the time only ruin a good boat" essentially imply that the other 1/2 makes a boat better? I bring this up as these types of negative, curmudgeonly responses to otherwise innocent posts and questions puts a lot of people "off", both seasoned members and newbies alike.

Moonfish: Bad mood - no. Smile face - no, but a sarcastic face - yes. Intended negative -no. What is a 'Blue water' boat? People have been to the Antarctic in Maxi 68, crossed the atlantic on surfboards, You find 50Ft long-keelers on the reefs in Tuamoto, You hear about 40 and up gone missing at sea in bad weather....... In my opinion the term 'Blue Water Boat' might be a bit misleading. In my opinion it is the combination of boat - captain/crew/-cruising area that decides if the package is suitable for the intended passages, and the major factor is captain/crew more than the boat itself. Whenever I see the question = is this boat a blue water boat, I get a chill. It is like someone that does not quite have the knowledge and experience wants an insurance that that specific boat is 'safe' wherever he wants to go. Nothing is safe if handled wrongly, and it is amazing what is possible if You know the limmits and how to handle. We all have dreams, but unfortunately most of us have budgets. Matching the budget to the dreams is not allways easy. Looking at 40+ yacht with a limmit of 100k, that would take a rathed skiller captain/crew to survive. It is not only the question of purchase price but a question of running costs. Insurance, maintanance costs, harbor fees, daily running costs, to me it does not add up to a 'safe' package. If I by being a bit direct may prevent someone from not only ending in the sad statistic: Lost at sea, but from a financial mishap I have done 'my duty'. If some toes gets hurt on the way, better than the above alternatives. It is not a question of putting people 'off', it is more a question of trying to prevent the dreams ending as a nightmare. Dreams does not make You survive out here, reality does.

Haffiman, thank you for explaining your position. I agree with just about everything you say (95% of it). However, I believe the choice of vessel has more to do with one's personal level of comfort than their level of competence. Yes, a qualified and experienced sailor can take an open 18-foot open yawl and sail it around the world. Would I? Hell no. If I am going to do long open ocean passages, I want a boat that not only has the design characteristics and construction standards for the job, but will do so with some degree of comfort - both during the passage and at the destination. Can a 40-foot center cockpit sloop to do "bluewater" be found for around $100K? Yes. One just has to be smart about both the boat and the intended use. Therefore, IMHO, it is not out of line to ask experienced sailor's direct opinions of a particular boat model, especially if you hear conflicting reports regarding said boat. I went back and reread Robby's original post. I've read similar posts and questions whereby the poster obviously had no real clue what they were asking. And, yes, when it involves the fanatasy of sailing around the world combined with no real-life experience, those poor folks do need a dose of reality. That "clueless" approach does not stand out clearly as the case with Robby. I understand that you meant well, and appreciate that. I just felt that Robby did not deserve a rebuke that assumed so much. All he really wanted to know was what people with experience on Irwin 43's thought of them. Which is why I read the post in the first place. I, too, am curious what those people have to say...

I find no personal insults in either mine or Monfish' comments above, and I do not see the words 'crazy/stupid' either. I made some comments about the expression 'Blue water Boats' and indirectly what to get in the requested size for the budget mentioned. What made me drop a comment at all was Your last sentence: "Look forward to hear/see your opinions, leaving apart external components like captain & crew which 1/2 the time only ruin a good boat." By that statement You downgrade 50% of captains and crew - that is insulting. I mainly turned it around and highlighted the importance of captain/crew. It does not take much 'Googeling' to find out the caracteristics of the Irwin 43, but I left it out as You did only want 1.hand experience. Due to Your reaction I'll post it anyway, perhaps it might give others some idea what to look for. There are quite some Irwin 43 on the market, in different 'Mk' versions and prices ranging from 86.000$ (86 mod) and up to 175.000$ for 91 mod. To me that indicates a boat that will need quite 'an upgrade' to make in sea-worthy' condition for extended cruising if 100k is the budget. The price gap for 10 -20 year is too big just considdering 'normal aging'. Even the 'newer' ones seems to have been 'uppgraded' for 10.000's of dollars, why? Then do a comparison with a similar boat design, I used Hallberg Rassey 43. A quite reputable boat, built for handling the most. One thing is the price difference - the Irwin goes for 30 - 40% of the Rassey price, there must be a reason aside brand name -quality! They both have a displacement of 13Tons, but the Irwin has a ballast wheight of 7,6 tons, the Rassey 4,5 tons. To me it indicates an extremely light hull which normally means less rigid or more 'jelly'. That was even confirmed by Camaraderie, even he did not quite use that expression. I could go on, but preferr to stop. But You were far from insulted - but as said above: You insulted 50% of captains and crew.

Guess there is nobody out there with an Irwin 43 willing to share their experiences! Thx anyway.

Irwin 43 (1971)

Irwin 43 (1971) is a 43 ′ 6 ″ / 13.3 m monohull sailboat designed by Ted Irwin and built by Irwin Yachts starting in 1971.

Drawing of Irwin 43 (1971)

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

A fixed keel version was also available, as was a yawl rig. Diesel available as an option.

Release Boatworks 43 Gameboat: Blending Classic Design with Modern Technology

Release Boatworks 43 Gameboat cruises across the water.

A builder of top-notch custom boats since 2009, Release Boatworks has been seeing good success with its 34-, 43- and 46-foot walkaround and express models. Its engineers utilize precision CAD programming and three-dimensional solid modeling software, and the company has also invested in a new 5-axis CNC router to create mold plugs. These processes allow the company to take advantage of production manufacturing efficiencies—including reduced build times—while building a stronger, tougher boat relative to cold-molded construction and yet remaining a custom-boat-building company.

Integrating advanced composite construction techniques such as blending fabrics and various core-material densities and thicknesses for different parts of the boat—along with infusion and vacuum-bagging those parts—can effectively reduce build time and increase manufacturing accuracy and overall strength, as well as build shape into the boat much easier than shaping wood.

Construction and Performance

Top-down aerial view of a sport-fishing boat cruising across the water, leaving cresting waves in its wake.

Partnering with an industry leader in advanced composites, Composites Consulting Group, a subsidiary of DIAB Group, Release utilizes the specifications from CCG to set the standards on all build materials while also training Release boatbuilders on how to integrate them into the manufacturing process. The folks at Release have joined Merritt’s Boat & Engine Works in a very exclusive club of those who are committed to this type of construction in sport-fishing boats.

I had the pleasure of testing its new 43-foot Gameboat flybridge recently in Vero Beach, Florida. Utilizing its proven hull, Release added a house and flybridge—a first for the builder for this model—for its owner. Honoring the old-school dayboat layout of the 1960s-vintage Rybovich and Merritt 37-foot dayboats with an open aft bulkhead, the 43 Gameboat offers new construction technology, classic lines, speed, ride and serious fishability.

Our test boat has twin 725 hp D11 Volvo diesel engines with straight shafts and running gear. She has an 11.5-kilowatt Onan generator, 620-gallon fuel capacity and 60-gallon water capacity, and we tested her with all fluids full and two of us on the boat with light winds and less than one-foot chop. She comes on plane with little effort and settles in at a great economical cruise at 2,000 rpm, burning 43 gallons per hour while making 24.8 knots for 0.6 miles per gallon. Pushing her up to make a move to another spot, she slips along at 31.5 knots, burning 64 gph, making 0.5 mpg at 2,400 rpm; at wide open she hits 33.5 knots, burning 70 gph.

View of the helm overlooking the ocean.

Helm and Cockpit

This good-looking 43-footer lacks little, as she has a flybridge with good seating in front of the console with a pull-out refrigerator drawer and side bench seating with storage beneath to port and starboard. Her practical console with centerline teak helm pod features a comprehensive electronics package including a pair of Garmin 8616 multifunction units with a chart plotter and an echo sounder, Garmin autopilot, Simrad SY50 omni sonar, a Volvo joystick controller, a ZipWake trim-tab controller and two Icom ICM510 VHF radios, one on the helm dash and one in the overhead drop-down electronics box. Controls for the Seakeeper 6, engines and push-button switching for pertinent ship’s systems are located on the dash beneath the displays within easy reach of the helmsman.

The 43 fulfills her fishing criteria with a full tuna tower featuring a Garmin 8612, an Icom VHF, a set of Rupp Big Riggs triple-spreader outriggers, a center rigger, and three rod holders facing aft and one forward at the cockpit level. The fully appointed cockpit includes a mezzanine with a freezer with a single lid under the seat and two pull-out drawers under the footrest on the port side. To starboard is a combo freezer/storage box with a split lid under the mezzanine seat and a large deep storage box and a four-slot Plano box compartment under the footrest deck. Outboard of the armrest on the starboard side is a cockpit Volvo joystick controller, and to port on the bulkhead above the backrest is an additional Garmin 8612 display for the crew and guests.

Four fishing reels in the fighting chair of a sport-fishing boat.

She has freshwater washdown to port and saltwater washdown to starboard, as well as two large in-deck fish boxes, lazarette access and a molded-in transom baitwell/fish box with a clear lid. Her fighting chair, teak deck and cover boards give her the look that fits the DNA of her fishy legacy.

Interior Layout

The open bulkhead of the 43 is closed in with poly curtains and canvas to contain the air conditioning and keep the boat closed up dockside. However, she’s quickly opened up to make full use of her dayboat advantages. Release did a great job with the interior, building fully molded fiberglass engine boxes with integral seating on either side that lift up to expose the entire engine, making any routine maintenance a snap. To port is a U-shaped dinette with a teak table, while the starboard side features a long bench seat with tackle storage behind it.

On our test boat, there is a mini galley up forward of the seating with a sink to port outboard and an Isotherm pull-out refrigerator to starboard outboard—she is truly a dayboat. The forward bulkhead to port has teak cabinets with three doors, one for the microwave and two storage cabinets. The starboard forward bulkhead has a flat-screen television. Release builds the 43 in two layouts: galley up with a second stateroom like our test boat, or a large single forward stateroom with galley down.

The interior engine room of a sport-fishing boat.

Moving below on our test boat, there is a teak-accented head to starboard with a full shower, a vanity and a stainless sink. To port is the second stateroom with over-and-under bunks. Fully forward is the master stateroom with an island queen berth.

The Release 43 Gameboat is a sleek-looking modern take on the nimble dayboats of the 1960s and ’70s. True to her forebears in terms of boat-handling attributes, this 43 spins within her own axis and backs down with little rooting to bury the transom. It is easy to feather the throttles and keep her moving in reverse at a very brisk clip. She has a clean wake at trolling speed for bait fishing, and her lure speed is calm with good lanes for lure placement.

With her classic good looks, solid composite construction, dayboat layout and modern fishing technologies, the 43 is a great blueprint for what’s to come from Release Boatworks, all while paying respect to the boats that set the standard from the great builders of the day.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

43 irwin sailboat

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

43 irwin sailboat

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

43 irwin sailboat

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

43 irwin sailboat

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

43 irwin sailboat

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

43 irwin sailboat

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

43 irwin sailboat

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Italy’s coast guard searches for dozens of migrants missing after their ship capsized

Sixty-four people were missing at sea after a shipwreck off the Italian southern coast on Monday, United Nations’ agencies said in a statement. In the shipwreck, which took place about 200 kilometres (125 miles) off Calabria, a boat that had set off from Turkey eight days earlier caught fire and overturned, the U.N. agencies said, citing survivors. The Italian Red Cross said overall 12 people were rescued although one person died. (AP video shot by Valeria Ferraro)

MILAN (AP) — Italy’s coast guard was searching by sea and from the air on Thursday for dozens of people missing when a boat capsized and partially sank earlier this week in the perilous central Mediterranean, officials said.

The partially submerged boat was still in view, but the commander of the search operation said that no bodies were in sight. The boat capsized about 195 kilometers (120 miles) off the Calabrian coast.

A fishing boat was the first to respond on Monday after the boat capsized and rescued 12 people, one of whom later died. Italy’s coast guard has recovered six bodies, and survivors say more than 60 people are missing. They include more than 20 children.

Survivors reported that the boat motor had caught fire, causing it to capsize off the Italian coast about eight days after departing from Turkey with about 75 people from Iran, Syria and Iraq on board, according to the U.N. refugee agency and other U.N. organizations.

A spokeswoman for Doctors Without Borders said that the survivors have suffered both psychological and physical trauma, and “remained very confused.”

“They have been hospitalized ... and don’t yet know who in their families is alive and who died at sea,’’ said Cecilia Momi, in charge of the group’s humanitarian affairs. “Entire families are destroyed. Some lost a wife, some lost a child, a husband, a friend, a nephew.”

Separately on Monday, the charity rescue ship Nadir rescued 51 people from Syria, Egypt, Pakistan and Bangladesh and transported them to Lampedusa. Another 10 people on the same smugglers’ boat were found dead on the lower deck.

The deaths bring to more than 800 people who have died or went missing and are presumed dead crossing the central Mediterranean so far this year, an average of five dead a day, the U.N. agencies said.

The International Red Cross said that the tragedies are “another testament to Europe’s failing approach to migration and asylum , which prioritizes walls and deterrence over humane welcome.”

This story has been corrected to show that 12 survivors were rescued, not 11. One of them later died.
