“The key concept of this project is that it is a boat for cruising,” the yard’s chief operating officer, Federico Rossi said in a statement. “With the owner’s input, we were able to best express the know-how and skills we have gained through decades of experience.”

With a beam of 37 feet, Akula offers an interior volume of 1,215 GT. The living quarters were designed by FM Architettura and have been described by Rossinavi as “cozy yet elegant.”

“I was very lucky to meet this owner, who guided and empowered the entire team involved in the creation of this yacht,” FM Architettura founder Francesca Muzio said in a statement. “A real ship, a combination of elements that led to an original result: a strong but elegant vessel that fits perfectly with our view of modern yachting.”

The layout has been outfitted to support “marine research activities and philanthropic projects.” In the bow, for instance, there is a sprawling observation lounge where seafarers can take in views of the local surroundings. The sundeck has also been turned into a technical area with all the requisite gear for expeditions. To top it off, the garage can house a pair of custom 30-foot tenders, an array of diving gear, and two 20-foot containers that can double as transportable science labs.

ROSSINAVI LAUNCHES M/Y AKULA

ROSSINAVI LAUNCHES M/Y AKULA

Viareggio (Lucca), 13 June 2023 - Italian shipyard Rossinavi has launched its first 59.4-metre (195ft) Expedition yacht M/Y Akula from its Pisa facilities. The yacht lines were penned by Gian Paolo Nari and the interior design by Ancona-based studio FM Architettura. Fitted with diesel-electric propulsion and dynamic positioning, this Ice Class yacht has been built to fulfill the Owner's dream of world exploration. The Owners are being represented by ACP Surveyors who also acts as the Owner’s Project Managers.

"The key concept of this project is that it is a boat for cruising,” explains Federico Rossi, Chief Operating Officer of Rossinavi. "With the Owner’s input, we were able to best express the know-how and skills we have gained through decades of experience.” M/Y Akula was jointly developed with the Owner, who was actively involved in the entire concept and development process. The result is a luxury Expedition yacht, the first in the Rossinavi fleet, created with the goal of navigating over long distances. An Expedition yacht structured with a sturdy hull that allows cruising in remote areas while ensuring absolute safety. Each space outsizes standard yachts, allowing for large storage areas and comfortable crew accommodation. M/Y Akula is a vessel that, by meeting certain standards of eco-sustainability, expresses strength, safety, and the ability to travel long distances.

At the Owner’s request, the yacht was also developed to support marine research activities and philanthropic projects, with a large open area capable of stowing a variety of accessories, including two custom nine-meter-long tenders and various diving equipment. In addition, there is the possibility of loading two standard 20-foot containers on board as scientific laboratories. Key custom solutions include the forward maneuvering station being moved below deck, leaving the entire overdeck completely free as an open observation deck; in addition, the sundeck is configured as a technical area, where the emergency generator is located. The interior design has been developed to be cozy but elegant, through synergistic work between the Owner and the designers.

Rossinavi Launches First Expedition Yacht M/Y AKULA

By George Bains

As the demand for exploration and adventure on the water remains steadfast among modern owners, Italian shipyard Rossinavi has launched its first Expedition yacht.

59-metre M/Y Akula was launched from the Rossinavi facilities in Pisa, marking the renowned Italian builder’s first Expedition yacht project. Akula features an exterior profile penned by gian Paolo Nari, with interior design by Ancona-based studio FM Architettura.

Akula is an Ice Class yacht, powered by diesel-electric propulsion and fitted with dynamic positioning, providing a perfect platform to fulfil her Owner’s dream of world exploration. ACP Surveyors represent the Owner while also acting as the Owner’s Project Managers.

“The key concept of this project is that it is a boat for cruising,” explains Rossinavi COO, Federico Rossi. “With the Owner’s input, we were able to best express the know-how and skills we have gained through decades of experience.”

The Owner has been thoroughly involved in the entire concept and development process, working alongside Rossinavi and the design teams to bring Akula to life.

Akula is destined to navigate over long distances while providing her Owner and guests with a luxury base for adventures. Her sturdy hull facilitates such remote cruising in absolute safety, while the yacht meets modern standards of eco-sustainability while still having the capability to comfortably travel across long distances in safety.

“In order to fulfil the Owners’ brief, great importance has been given to efficiency and ocean-going capabilities,” explains Andrea Carlevaris, Founder and CEO of ACP Surveyors. “This sturdy fully custom vessel is able to venture in hot and cold climates in remote areas of the world for a long period of time with optimised fuel consumption and low impact on the environment.”

The Owner has also requested that the vessel be built to support marine research activities and philanthropic projects. To cater to this vision, a large open area has been crafted to stow a variety of accessories, including two custom 9-metre tenders and various diving equipment. Akula can also bel loaded with two 20-foot containers to function as scientific laboratories.

The forward manoeuvring station has been relocated below deck to leave the entire overdeck free as an open observation deck. The sundeck has been configured as a technical area, storing the emergency generator, while the interior design provides a cozy yet elegant atmosphere for guests to feel at home.

“I was very lucky to meet this Owner, who guided and empowered the entire team involved in the creation of this yacht,” says Francesca Muzio, Founder of FM Architettura. “A real ship, a combination of elements that led to an original result: a strong but elegant vessel that fits perfectly with our view of modern yachting.”

We look forward to seeing Rossinavi ’s first Expedition yacht on the waters, and hearing more about her adventures and research work in the future.

Just-Launched Akula: “A Boat for Cruising”

' src=

There are cruising boats and there are cruising boats. And then there’s Akula , the just-launched 195-foot-long, luxury expedition yacht built by Rossinavi in Italy.

Don’t worry about running into Akula on your next cruise on the Great Loop. It won’t slide under the 19’ 6” fixed bridge on the Illinois River outside Chicago. And it certainly won’t be able to navigate the thin waters of the low countries on the ICW, where I’ve managed to make contact with the bottom on my 36-foot Grand Banks.

Akula is a blue-water vessel, with a steel, ice-class hull meant to cruise safely to remote corners of the world. And it certainly will stand out, wherever it is, with its striking red paint job.

“The key concept for this project is that it is a boat for cruising,” said Federico Rossi, the CEO of Rossinavi. “With the owner’s input, we were able to best express the know-how and skills we have gained through experience.”

Akula holds 12 guests in six staterooms, plus a large crew complement. It has a 39-foot beam, so there’s plenty of interior volume for everyone. In a statement, Rossinavi says the living quarters on board are “cozy but elegant.”

We don’t have details, but the new expedition yacht has what the yard says is an ultra-efficient, diesel-electric propulsion system that burns less fuel while reducing its environmental impact.

The hull and naval architecture were drawn by Arrabito Naval Architects in Livorno, while the interior was by FM Architettura in Ancona. The layout was designed to support marine research and scientific projects. A large observation lounge is forward so passengers can view their surroundings. The yacht’s sundeck was turned into a technical area with lots of expedition gear. The garage holds two 30-foot tenders, diving gear, and two 20-foot containers that will serve as portable science labs.

Francesca Muzio, the founder of FM Architettura, says that Akula is an original ship, “a strong but elegant vessel that fits perfectly with our view of modern yachting.”

The name is interesting. In Sanskrit, Akula is the name of the benevolent mother goddess Parvati, the wife of the Hindu god Shiva. In Russian, it means shark; indeed, Akula is the name of an entire class of Russian nuclear-powered attack submarines. Read more:
