The 35th Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta, with its unique blend of sport, tradition, camaraderie and maritime heritage, starts next Wednesday, April 17th and promises to be an unforgettable experience for all who attend. The racing will be held off the scenic south coast of the island while the onshore events will be in Nelson’s Dockyard, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is dripping in history.

With the largest registered fleet of classic boats since 2014, this year’s regatta is poised to be a truly spectacular event. From the 177-foot sister ships Chronos and Rhea to the 29-foot Falmouth quay punt, Phoebe of Fowey, a diverse range of vessels will grace the waters off Antigua’s picturesque shores. The beautiful 70-foot custom cutter Galatea built in 1899 will be the oldest yacht on the water while Chloe Giselle, a spirit of tradition sloop built in 2014 with long overhangs, low profiles and smooth lines that gives her the look of a classic 1930’s yacht, will be the youngest. There is also an impressive line of other yachts including the magnificent 115-foot staysail schooner Eros, the majestic 114-foot ketch Saharet of Tyre, the three-masted square topsail schooner Alvei, the marconi yawl Nordwind built by the German navy in 1939, the legendary racing yawl Bolero, The Blue Peter who will be back for her tenth Classic Regatta, the beautiful schooners Charm III and Adventurer and a fleet of local Carriacou sloops as well as a host of others making this a fantastic fleet.

An eruption of primping and polishing is expected in Nelson’s Dockyard before judging of the Concours d’Elégance gets under way on Wednesday afternoon. A team of prestigious judges, led by Jane Coombs, wife of the Regatta founder Kenny Coombs, will inspect the meticulously maintained classic yachts and have the unenviable task of selecting the winners.

Racing begins Thursday morning and the boats and crews will test their mettle on the Classic Regatta’s tried and true courses. Racing continues through Sunday before the skippers try their hands at multi-tasking in the single-handed race on Monday. The winners will be awarded a barrel of English Harbour Rum at the Awards Ceremony on Monday night.

Sponsors English Harbour Rum and Red Stripe Beer will light the fuse on a jam-packed social schedule at the Welcome Party on Wednesday night. There is a happy hour after the racing every night of the regatta where sailors will be entertained with steel drums, stilt walkers and a fire eater at Caribbean Night, an Open Mic Night and a Rain Gutter Regatta where teams from each yacht build a ten-inch boat and race it down a rain gutter. Sunday afternoon during the Parade of Classics, visitors can take in the timeless beauty of these yachts as they pass through English Harbour. Viewing tents with food and beverage service will be set up on the lawn in front of the Copper and Lumber Store Hotel. Monday afternoon the focus shifts to the Admiral’s Inn for the Cream Tea and Gig Racing. After the evening Prize-Giving Ceremony, join us for dinner on the lawn outside Copper and Lumber and remember to put on your dancing shoes to dance the night away under the swaying palms.

2023 Results

as of Sept 27, 2023

How to read the Series Results:

  • Per the CYCS Notice of Series , to qualify for a boat must be a CYOA Member and compete in 5 individual races across 3 events in at least 2 districts. For district awards, a boat must sail in 3 races across 2 events.
  • A boat's High Point Percentage overall score is determined by summing the top 5 points earned in the boat's top 5 races and dividing that by the total number of boats sailed against in those races - then multiplying by 100. Therefore, 5 first places earned over the season would equate to 100%. A tie breaker is determined by whomever sailed against the most boats. For districts, it is top 3 scores. Qualified boats are then ranked by the CRF Division ( the division listed on their CRF Certificate).
  • In the case where an Organizing Authority (OA) of an event choose to sail boats from different CRF Divisions against each other or not for race management purposes, where applicable the Corrected Time or Corrected Speed was instead used to rank boats against other boats in their CRF Certificate Division. Therefore, the starting class place earned at an event may differ than the division place for the series. Please note for the Eggemoggin Reach Regatta, the ERR Handicap was removed for a boat's CYCS score.
  • The goal of the Series is to encourage friendly competition and find the best way to fairly compare results transparently. A great amount of time was taken to analyze these results and any questions can be directed to Kate Somers: kate @risingt.com

The east coast’s leading racing weekend for classic sail and motor yachts is an annual event held at Suffolk Yacht Harbour (SYH) and hosted by Haven Ports Yacht Club.

Welcome to the SYH Classic Regatta

Hosted by Haven Ports Yacht Club, the regatta is based at Suffolk Yacht Harbour (SYH); the largest independent marina on the east coast and a ‘one-stop shop’ for classic yachts.  Located on the River Orwell, SYH has 550 berths, swinging moorings and workshops designed specifically for classic yacht maintenance and restoration. Additional services onsite at SYH include a chandlery, sailmaker and rigging specialists.

The Parade of Sail

The biennial international Classic Channel Regatta is back in Dartmouth from July 17 to 20.

The first four days are a long regatta for classic yachts then races to Guernsey and on to Paimpol in Brittany.

This year will see over 75 classic yachts from Britain, France, Belgium, Holland, Denmark and Switzerland gathering in Dartmouth for two days of racing in Start Bay.

This racing called ‘Dartmouth Classics’, will be followed by the start of the ‘Classic Channel Race’ in Start Bay on July 20.

The race will take the yachts to St Peter Port in Guernsey for a one-day break there before racing on to Paimpol where the regatta will end on July 25.

Kelpie off Dartmouth Embankment

The regatta is organising an afternoon of fun watersports in the river off Dartmouth Yacht Club on Wednesday 17 starting at 2pm.

All are welcome to join in the fun either as spectators or participants.

A Parade of Sail of all the fleet will take place in the river Dart on the morning of Thursday July 18 at approximately 10.30am before they go out into Start Bay for the first day of racing.

The Parade will start near the Higher Ferry passing close to the Dartmouth side of the river and then past the Lower Ferry and all the way out past the castles.

A strolling jazz band will entertain around the embankment from about 4pm.

The following day will see the second day of racing off Dartmouth with the ‘Salcombe Gin Start Bay Race’ taking a longer course around the bay and, winds permitting, may also include a course up the coast to Torbay.

In the evening there will be a prize giving at the Royal Dart Yacht Club for these Dartmouth Classics Races.

Saturday 20 will see the start of the first stage of the Classic Channel Race to St Peter Port.

It will begin from Start Bay in the afternoon.

It will be an overnight race with the boats arriving in Guernsey the following day where there will be an evening reception in the grounds of Castle Cornet overlooking St Peter Port harbour.

The following morning of the 22 will see the fleet start the second stage of the Classic Channel Race to Paimpol.

The fleet will arrive off Paimpol in the early evening that day and will form a Parade of Sail along the entrance channel and through the lock into the port.

Paimpol is a delightful port almost due south of Dartmouth, right in the centre of town surrounded by quayside cafés and restaurants.

The last race is around the Île de Bréhat off Paimpol, followed by a picnic while moored off the island, and then ‘La Danse des Classiques’ where the boats sail around a circular course off Paimpol with the boats and crews decked out in fancy dress.

The day finishes with a Parade of Sail back into Paimpol harbour.

Fanny Chappé-Mayor of de Paimpol

The mayor of Paimpol has sent this message of friendship to Dartmouth:

“The bonds of fraternity between our two communities, English and Breton, are strong and historic. Our shared history, our cultural exchanges and emblematic events such as the Classic Channel Regatta serve to only strengthen this precious relationship.”

Fanny Chappé-Maire de Paimpol

Bruce Thorogood created the regatta back in 2005 and is still its chair and lead organiser.

He said: “The Classic Channel Regatta has built up an enviable reputation for being a highly enjoyable and well run regatta.

“One French competitor called it “La Plus Belle Régate du Monde.”

Beautiful Classic Boats on the Market: Sale into Summer

Classic Boats for Sale: Spirit of Josephine

On the market for a classic boat in beautiful condition? Here’s two top picks to sail into the summer with…

Adrian morgan’s own vertue.

To regular readers of this magazine, Sally II , a Laurent Giles 5-tonner, built in 1937, sail number V2, might be the most famous yacht in the world! Columnist Adrian Morgan has been describing adventures aboard her monthly for nearly three decades in his monthly column. The Vertue name only became associated with these sturdy, record-breaking wee yachts after the war, when astonishing transatlantic and long distance feats were achieved by the likes of Humphrey Barton and others. Sally was commissioned by a Poole solicitor for local sailing, but in her time has cruised all over the UK, from Wales, across Channel to France , and now on the west coast of Scotland. Structurally in excellent condition – her tungum bronze floors, lead keel, bronze bolts and pitch pine on massive oak timbers – have stood up well, and she makes next to no water on her mooring. After 30 years in the same ownership, she deserves a new owner who can wield a paint brush. Her Yanmar IGM10 diesel is a few years old, with very low hours. Her six Richardson sails are good for many more miles. Her varnished Noble mast is almost as new. An archive of photos and documents includes her original bill of sale from Elkins, her Blue Book and much more. With a clear bill of health from a recent survey, she is for sale at £15,000. A sheltered mooring is available, just across the loch from wooden boatbuilders Johnson & Loftus where she is slipped annually for maintenance.

Asking £14,000, Lying Ullapool, Scotland, contact [email protected]

Sally - classic boat for sale

SPIRIT OF JOSEPHINE

Spirit 65dh.

Here’s a rare chance to buy a recent Spirit. It seems hardly necessary to say, such has been the company’s success in the last two decades, but this is a wood-epoxy, spirit-of-tradition yacht – classic looking above decks, and modern below the waterline. All Spirits are (a least!) semi bespoke and this one has good eco credentials, luxury all in natural materials, and an electric drive system with propeller regeneration. These larger Spirits are fast, capable boats, quite capable of competitive regatta participation, but they tend to be popular with couples who want to cruise far. “In our view, the 46 and 52 were among the most successful Spirit Yachts designs, and for good reason,” says the broker. “But at 65ft (19.8m), the deckhouse proportions really work and the concept probably reaches its sweet spot – a beautifully timeless aesthetic – and could easily be sailed by two people only. Elegance combined with modern handling above and below the waterline, and great craftsmanship, are of course a Spirit Yachts specialty, but it takes commissioning owners with vision to create a boat like Spirit of Josephine . From natural zinc surfaces to Harris Tweed chesterfields, she leaves you wanting to spend time aboard. This is no average boat: Spirit of Josephine is a modern classic with an awful lot of soul.

Asking £1,980,000, Lying UK – Visit the Sandeman Yacht Company Website .

Classic cars draw a crowd as the Sternwheel Regatta comes to a close

As the Regatta came to a close on Sunday, one of the last big events was the classic car show which saw many bring out their prized cars to show off on the boulevard. (WCHS)

CHARLESTON, W.Va (WCHS) — As the Regatta came to a close on Sunday, one of the last big events was the classic car show which saw many bring out their prized cars to show off on the boulevard.

Eight-year-old Caden Mollohan brought out his 1979 Jeep. Mollohan said it was a gift from his grandpa that he helped customize and even name "Big Meaty."

He said he can't wait to be a licensed driver so he can officially take it for a spin.

Kenny Gandy brought out his vintage Ford, which took him a total of five years to build. He said this ride won him two best in show awards just this year so far.

“It’s a 1933 Ford steel body and it has an LS3 Corvette motor in it,” Gandy said about his car.

Chuck Burgess recently purchased his 1940 model Ford. He said he hasn't had it for very long, so he was excited to bring it out.

“I haven’t had it for very long so I wanted to bring it out to see how it would do,” Burgess said. “I bought it from a guy a couple months ago.”

Burgess said he purchased his car from a guy who had it kept in his garage for ten years, and now he's brought it back to life.
