How To Mount a GoPro on a Boat

There are different GoPro boat mounts depending on what part of the boat you’d like to attach your GoPro. One of the best method is to use a waterproof suction mount to attach your GoPro on a flat surface at the front or back of your sailing boat, kayak or fishing boat by following these simple steps:

  • Place the suction cup flat on the plain surface of your boat, and press the button firmly.
  • Pull back the lever to lock the suction in place.
  • After attaching the suction cup, attach GoPro with the thumbscrew provided (procedure varies from mount to mount)
  • Use a camera float to keep your camera secure and floating in case suction fails and your GoPro falls into the water.

Compact action cameras present some of the most practical means of getting high quality images and footage afloat. But which model should you choose?

action-cam-test-montage

These 6 cameras were tested by the trustedreviews.com team

Action cameras can go where your average camera or smartphone wouldn’t even dream. And thanks to rugged and waterproof designs they can endure the rigours and extremes of any sailing adventure .

Even for more mundane activities action cameras can prove their worth, getting video and still images from unique perspectives thanks to their small size and mounting abilities. A good action camera can prove to be your best companion to take afloat.

GoPro is a name that has grown synonymous with action cameras – so much so the company name almost risks becoming a generic term, with any and all action cameras often being referred to as ‘GoPros’.

Best action cameras for sailing

Gopro hero 5 black.

Key features:

  • Up to 4K/30fps
  • Voice controls
  • Electronic image stabilisation
  • Waterproof without a case

We’ve called the Hero 5 Black GoPro’s ‘Greatest Hits’ camera for good reason. It has taken the best component parts of GoPro’s previous models and merged them all together to form the company’s most capable and best-performing action camera.

It has the same 4K top resolution at 30 frames per second as the Hero 4 Black, adds the built-in waterproofing of the Hero Session, and improves upon the integrated touchscreen display of the Hero 4 Silver.

GoPro has added some new features, too, including electronic image stabilisation for less shaky footage, and new voice-control options for when your hands are tied. Top it off with all-important excellent image quality and you have the recipe for one of the best action cameras you can buy.

The new GoPro Hero 6 Black improves on an already fantastic Hero 5 Black camera thanks to a new custom GP1 processor, which is double the performance of its predecessor (Up to 4K/60fps; 1080p/240fps). But it’s around £150 more expensive.

GoPro Hero 5 Session

When the original Hero 4 Session (since renamed the Hero Session) was first launched, it was a tough sell. It launched at the same price as the better-performing Hero 4 Silver and was difficult to recommend.

This time round, GoPro hasn’t introduced a Silver model to go alongside the Hero 5 Black. This means the Hero 5 Session becomes the cheaper alternative and makes much more sense. It has the same 4K resolution at 30fps as the Hero 5 Black, its image quality is almost as good and it has new voice controls.

You have to look at the lower resolutions to see where the Black excels at higher frame rate video. The Session also lacks the GPS of the Hero 5 Black. The cube-shaped design is, importantly, very light. This makes the Hero 5 Session a great choice for mounting in tricky positions. If you’re looking for a secondary camera, it’s a great choice.

Sony fdr-x3000r action camera.

  • Live-view remote control
  • Balanced optical image stabilisation
  • Innovative range of accessories

Sony’s FDR-X3000R Action Cam is one of the priciest action cameras on the market, but if you have deep pockets it’s also one of the best you can buy. What goes some way to justifying its hefty price tag is its optical image stabilisation (OIS) – proper optical image stabilisation here, not digital trickery as is the case with electronic image stabilisation.

This means there’s a floating lens system that counters your hand movement. The big draw is the OIS still works even when you’re shooting at glorious 4K resolution.

You also get a separate live-view remote control that can be worn on the wrist or attached to other accessories such as the Shooting Grip or Finger Grip. The latter is a tiny holster that’s perfect if you’re using the FDR-X3000R as a travel camera.

Both video and still image quality are excellent, with all the resolution and frame rate options you’d expect from a high-end action camera.

Yi 4k action camera.

  • 19-inch touchscreen display
  • Bluetooth and WiFi

When the Yi 4K Action Camera first came out, it was touted as a much cheaper alternative to the GoPro Hero 4 Black. In many aspects it fulfilled a lot of that potential.

Things have changed a little since the release of the excellent Hero 5 Black, but the Yi 4K Action Cam still makes for an excellent action camera for the money.

Garmin virb ultra 30.

  • GPS telemetry and external sensor support

If you’re looking for an action camera specifically for sports, the VIRB Ultra 30 might be the choice for you. Not only does it have 4K resolution at 30fps, it also has a GPS sensor inside to capture telemetry data.

This means while you’re punching the waves you can capture route, speed and distance data to bring an added layer of information to your videos. The VIRB Ultra 30 also supports external sensors through ANT+ and Bluetooth, including heart rate monitors and bike sensors.

Image quality is also up there with the best. You get plenty of resolution and frame rate options, including 1080p at 120fps or 720p at 240fps – perfect for impressive slow- motion footage. There’s a display on the back for framing your shots and changing settings, otherwise you can pair with the companion apps.

Here Are 10 Cheap, Creative and Fun Ways to Use Your GoPro

From streaming live video to Periscope to recording a day through your dogꞌs eyes, these 10 ideas can help you get the most out of your GoPro.

More Than One Way to Use a GoPro

GoPro has dominated the compact-action camera industry for more than a decade, and its cameras are great for capturing high-risk, high-flying sports in high-definition video. But did you know you they can also be used to stream video to social media networks? Or used as a backup camera on a car? Here are 10 cheap, creative and fun ways to use your GoPro.

Stream to Periscope

Stream to Periscope

YouꞋll need a GoPro Hero4 , but if you have one, you can pair it with your Periscope social media account on your smartphone. You still need to keep your phone nearby so you can connect to the cameraꞋs Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, but this opens up a world of underwater and high-speed video you can stream to your friends when your smartphone's built-in camera just wonꞌt cut it. You can do this in three easy steps:

  • Turn your GoProꞋs Wi-Fi on and connect your phone to it.
  • Open the Periscope app and click broadcast.
  • The app will detect your GoPro, and is ready to roll!

We suggest getting a waterproof case for your smartphone and streaming some tropical snorkeling footage, or mount the GoPro on your mountain bike and rip down some trails while your friends are watching from their desk with envy.

Spend a Day in the Life of Your Pet

Spend a Day in the Life of Your Pet

Have you ever wondered what your pets do all day while youꞌre gone? Do you constantly blame your significant other for something that happened, never suspecting the real culprit is Fido? Or maybe you just want to get your dogꞌs-eye view of playing fetch. No matter the reason, seeing the world from your petꞋs perspective always seems to give a tiny look into what might be going through your petꞋs brains when the animal is acting playfully and foolishly.

You can attach a collar, harness or head mount with existing accessories, or use some of the up- and-coming products designed for this kind of thing. GoPro has recently released the Fetch harness for dogs ($59.99) that gives you the POV angle weꞋve all come to love with our GoPros.

Make a Floating Platform for Mellow Watersports

Make a Floating Platform for Mellow Watersports

It would be great to make a floating tripod that could withstand 20-foot swells and Class IV rapids to capture your killer surfing and rafting adventures, but for some of the more mellow watersports — stand up paddle boarding (SUP), non-whitewater kayaking, canoeing — you could easily make a floating platform for your GoPro to capture those serene, middle of nowhere, "how did they do that?!" moments. Yes, GoPro has the Floaty Backdoor ($19.99) and floating selfie sticks, but for these types of captures, youꞌre going to need your camera upright and pointing directly at you, not floating upside down in the water.

To do this, just grab a few empty plastic bottles for pontoons, a plastic lid or a Frisbee for the GoPro platform, some duct tape to hold everything together and, viola ! — you have a floating GoPro catamaran. Now just use some clear fishing line to pull it behind your watercraft and start capturing your moments.

Grab the Best Pictures on the Move

Grab the Best Pictures on the Move

The GoProꞌs video capabilities are excellent, but if you want to grab one single instant, exporting a still photo from the video isnꞌt going to be of the highest quality. Instead, use the time-lapse feature built into the camera.

Depending on your activity, go into the time-lapse settings and set the time accordingly. For high-octane captures, such as screaming around that hairpin turn on your sport bike, set the timer to take a photo every half second. For slower things where the scenery isnꞌt changing quite as quickly (like SUP), slow the timer down to once every second or longer.

When shooting faster, like every 0.5 seconds, change the field of view to medium or narrow if possible to ensure the highest image quality.

Back-up Camera for Your Car

Back-up Camera for Your Car

GoPro Back-Up Camera

If youꞌve always wanted a back-up camera, hereꞌs your chance to make one using your GoPro. Sure, thereꞌs a little hassle with installation and youꞌre not going to use it every time you back out of a parking spot, but when youꞌre in a tricky situation, this hack can come in handy.

Simply use the adhesive-mounting platforms that come with your camera and affix it to your bumper. Or grab the surfboard suction cup attachment ($19.99) and put it on your back window — this method will let you keep the GoPro mounted, and you wonꞌt have to worry about someone ripping it off your bumper. Then, just open and connect to the GoPro app, tap on Control, and wait for the preview to show up. You can now see behind you so you can avoid those tricky obstacles.

Built-In Time Lapse

Built-In Time Lapse

Time-Lapse Video

Thereꞌs something intrinsically mesmerizing about watching time-lapse videos, and your GoPro has some pretty amazing capabilities built right in.

The size of your SD memory card will help determine how fast you can set the timer, but the more pictures you can take (0.5 - 1 second intervals) within your eventꞌs time period, the smoother your time-lapse video will look. Conversely, if youꞌre filming a long-term project, perhaps the building of your house, you can set the interval much slower and still have a cool-looking video. If itꞌs a days-long shoot, your GoProꞌs battery may run out well before the end, so make sure you have spares or a portable battery pack handy.

GoPro’s native video-editing software makes importing the still photos and creating the final video incredibly easy.

The Most Compact Point-and-Shoot Camera

The Most Compact Point-and-Shoot Camera

People have mistaken GoPro images for full-resolution DSLR pictures as long as you use it within its "sweet spots." Bright, diffuse lighting and about a 3-foot distance seems to be the GoProꞌs bread-and-butter, though it certainly handles conditions outside that zone extremely well, too. You can use either the shutter button on the camera itself or your smartphone to preview and/or snap the shot. The latter method also lets you hold the GoPro up high, to capture photos from awkward angles.

Compact point-and-shoot cameras have gotten really small and really good at what they do, but most still donꞌt match the quality, ruggedness and functionality of the GoPro camera.

ꞌDashcamꞌ for Your Bike

ꞌDashcamꞌ for Your Bike

GoPro Dashcam for Your Bike

If youꞌre a pedal-powered commuter you already know this, but riding your bike in the city, even bike-friendly cities, is still inherently dangerous. Grab a handlebar-mounting accessory ($19.99) and press record as you set out on your urban journeys. Nobody ever tries to get in an accident, but if it happens, youꞌll have it all on video. The insurance companies will love you AND youꞌll probably go viral online.

Stream to Anything with HDMI Inputs

Stream to Anything with HDMI Inputs

Using the GoProꞌs built-in HDMI port, you can stream to any device that has HDMI input ports without using an app. You can use the GoPro as a webcam or record directly to your DVR. Or you can have a much better camera than whatꞌs included with your mobile device (with the proper cables and/or adapters).

Beehive Monitor

Beehive Monitor

Whether you raise bees or teach an educational class on beekeeping, having a look inside a beehive with a GoPro is much more convenient (and a lot safer to show an entire class). This one could end up damaging your camera if you get a little honey in the wrong place, so take every precaution necessary to protect it.

For the most protection — aside from a beekeeperꞌs suit so you can safely mount the GoPro — buy an extra waterproof case ($49.99) and use a Dremel to carve out a hole so that you can connect a USB charging cable and the HDMI connector. Connect the two cables and then use some moldable putty to create a complete seal. Make sure the cables are long enough to reach a power source and the viewing screen, and then youꞌre ready to add it to the beehive. Watch as the queen lays her eggs and the bees fill their honeycombs. As a bonus, youꞌll know exactly when to feed them, when to add another screen, and when youꞌre ready to harvest the honey.

Starting from Adamantas, the first part of our trip consists of sightseeing in the bay of Adamantas. Sailing close to the east coast of the bay, we will pass the first Christian catacombs and the colourful village of Klima, where the statue of Venus de Milo was discovered. While you take beautiful photos you can also learn some historical facts and myths about the island, as a part of our guided tour. We will then reach the ‘Arkoudes’, the impressive 20ft bear-shaped rocks at the entrance of the bay to the east.

With the wind in our sails, we will reach Cape Vani. This impressive 30-meter tall rock that marks the west entrance of the bay was home to one of the first mineral mines of Milos. After seeing the old 19th-century mines quay, we will have our first 20-minute swim at the bay of Kalogries in crystal clear turquoise waters.

Following our swim and some delicious snacks we set sail for Sykia, the biggest and most impressive cave of Milos where we will spend 1 hour. We anchor in the clear green waters of a bay nearby for a swim and take our small motorboat to visit the cave.

Next stop is Kleftiko; the old pirates-lair where we will spend around two hours. This unique complex of tall limestone rocks is one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world! Snorkelling here is an amazing experience. We provide you with masks, flippers and after a few tips on what you can do and let you swim and explore. You can also try Stand-Up paddling here. We will then take our dinghy and go explore the unique, diverse beauty of Kleftiko caves and take pictures. Getting back to the boat, refreshments and ice-cold beers or traditional ouzo and a delicious meal will be waiting for us.

We then will start making our way back to Adamas port, provided there is time, we will make a short 15 minute swim stop at the bay of Agios Dimitrios with a beautiful view of the Milos caldera.

The cruise itinerary is subject to change depending on weather conditions and at the discretion of the captain. In case of strong north winds, we will start the cruise from the south side of Milos. Transfer to and from the port of Adamas is offered and included in the price. In case of south winds, we will sail the north side of Milos and visit the inaccessible beaches of Kimolos & Poliegos.

Semiprivate cruises are organized by our tourist office Polco Tours, Greek Ministry of Tourism License 1172E60001075001.

Rob patterson and a group of friends from chilliwack, british columbia, were four days into a two-week vacation in costa rica on jan. 8 when the catamaran they and at least 90 others were on sank. the capsizing of the pura vida princess, one of the worst maritime accidents in recent costa rican history, claimed the lives of three foreign tourists including patterson’s friend, sharon johnson. “her loss has been devastating for her husband and our group. it’s a day that changed our lives forever,” patterson told the tico times. “the government told us they would get to the bottom of what happened.” more than nine months later, the government has, at least, eliminated one possible cause of the tragedy. after several months of investigation with the assistance of the u.s. coast guard and the u.s. national transportation safety board, the judicial investigation police (oij) has determined that negligence is not to blame. “the conclusion that the oij gave to the prosecutor in garabito [a pacific coast canton that includes jacã³, near where the pura vida princess sank] was that there was no indication, evidence or witnesses indicating that the cause of the shipwreck was negligence or damages to the ship,” oij spokeswoman paola madrigal told the tico times in an email. rather, she said, it was due to “natural causes.” posted by ghost.

Action cameras, adventure cameras, body cams or head cams; call them what you will – we take a look at the best 'GoPro' style cameras (named after the company largely responsible for making this type of device popular in action sports) for boating and watersports

best-gopros-for-boating

GoPro’s meteoric rise to success was powered by the fact that it let users capture stunning point-of-view action sequences, the likes of which had previously been limited to professional sports filming.

Unsurprisingly, the brand spawned not only a generation of imitators but also a tranche of alternatives. Today, action cameras inhabit a crowded marketplace, which is generally good news for consumers – there’s plenty of choice, prices are affordable and what can be achieved in terms of results is nothing short of breathtaking.

GoPro HERO 9 Black

The definitive gopro for boating

Widely recognised by many as the gold standard of action cameras, GoPro has been setting the bar since its launch in 2004. The GoPro HERO 9 Black featured here offers the highest video resolution – 5K ultra HD – of any camera in our review. The camera comes equipped with a touch rear screen and a front LCD screen.

In addition to video recording and capturing 20 mega pixel still photos, the HERO 9 Black is capable of live streaming. At 2.27″, the touch rear screen is larger than most, which should make hitting the controls that little bit easier, and the integral flip out ‘folding fingers’ means that a separate mounting frame is no longer required – simply attach the camera to any mount and away you go. This is undoubtedly a premium, high-spec offer, but to get the most from it mounting accessories will need to be purchased too.

Price: £357.58

DJI Osmo Action

With products such as its Pocket camera today being the weapon of choice of myriad vloggers the world over, DJI Osmo has established itself as a prime contender in the gyro-stabilised camera field. Its action camera comes complete with a dedicated charging kit, which includes the Osmo Action Charging Hub and two spare batteries and cases.

Unlike many other action cameras we’ve seen, the DJI Osmo Action is only waterproof to 10 metres. But what it does have in common with many other higher-end action cams is two screens – a touch screen on the back and a front screen that is great for selfies. To ensure its movies have that larger-than-life look, the DJI Osmo Action shoots in 4K High Dynamic Range (HDR) format.

AKASO EK7000 Pro

As another Amazon Choice action camera, the AKASO EK7000 Pro has a huge spec and promises to deliver ultra high definition 4K videos and outstanding 16 mega pixel still images. Equipped with a 2-inch screen/user interface and a lens featuring narrow, medium, wide or super wide view angles, the EK70000 is waterproof to 40 metres, which should be plenty deep enough for most users.

There’s a neat wrist controller for taking videos and stills, and onboard connectivity includes WiFi and an HDMI interface. The camera links up to an app for editing, sharing, operation or review via a smartphone or tablet. This looks to be a great buy for the money, but purchasers are likely to also want to add the AKASO accessories kit, which adds £15.99 to the price.

campark-action-camera

Campark ACT74

If a fully functioning, ultra high definition 4K, waterproof sports camera for under £35 sounds too good to be true, it may well be. But that’s what’s on offer on eBay, with multiple sellers promoting not just the Campark or similar cameras but also a full kit of accessories to go with it.

What’s more, postage is free and according to the listing we’ve chosen, stock is held in the UK.

Included in the Campark’s lengthy list of features is built-in WiFi, image stabilisation, infrared control and much more. In addition to three video modes, images of up to 20 mega pixels in size can be recorded.

Providing the quality is as claimed, and it keeps working, how far wrong can you go at this price?

Price: £34.39

Daewoo 4k ultra hd action camera.

Daewoo is one of those South Korean mega-companies that make just about everything – from cars and buses to textiles and electronics, they do the lot.

Being able to manufacture and ship an action cam halfway around the world at a price which allows a respected retailer such Currys to retail it for under £30 speaks volumes about Daewoo’s commercial muscle.

And with 4K ultra high definition 3840 x 1080P video, a wide angle 170-degree lens and built-in WiFi, the spec of its action cam is pretty impressive too. Waterproof to 30 metres with its included housing, the camera doubles up as a webcam when not in use elsewhere.

Sport DV action cam

Best budget gopro for boating

Another product from the bargain basement is this sports action camera, which is actually billed as a motorcycle helmet cam. But given it’s waterproof and vibration resistant too, there’s nothing to say it can’t be used to good effect by sailors and motor boaters as well.

The camera offers video resolutions of full 1920 x 1080P HD format at 30 frames per second (fps) or 1280 x 720 P at 60fps.

Its bag of accessories includes a rail mount, presumably intended for handlebars but which may also come in handy for attaching to boat rails. Made of aluminium alloy and with a year-long warrantee, this unbranded offer represents an ultra-low cost entry into the action cam arena.

Price: £20.99

What to look for in a top action cam or GoPro for boating

No matter which type of action camera you opt for, there are a number of key features to consider before you buy a gopro for boating.

Build quality: Any action camera needs to be rugged, tough and durable as they’re going to be taken to places ordinary cameras fear to tread. From under (salt)water to strapped to the mast in a gale, a GoPro for boating needs to be able take whatever you and the environment decide to throw at it.

Video quality: In terms of image quality, the options include HD, 4K and 6K. Then there’s the output format; MP4, HEVC and so on, so think about the quality you want to achieve and how you want to view it.

Sound quality: Consider sound as well. If audio quality is important to your videos, then a camera with an external microphone socket is a must. Do your homework so you can make an informed choice when it comes to deciding which GoPro to buy for your boating adventure.

Size: As elsewhere in life, size matters when it comes to action cameras. Small and fiddly or larger but easier to operate sum up the options here, but think about where you’re going to mount it – or if it will be worn on the body.

Battery life: A vital consideration. The batteries on early action cameras had extremely limited power storage, meaning you had to carry a bagful of them for a full day’s shooting. Things are far better today, but battery life is still worth checking.

Accessories: Body mounts, helmet mounts, remote controllers, waterproof casings; the list goes on. And on and on. To avoid disappointment, shortlist the cameras you like and compare their accessories before buying.
