Season: autumn

Tucked away in the recesses of the River Medway, Lower Halstow is predominantly a leisure sailing venue. It has its own yacht club.  There are visitor moorings, but these only offer sufficient depth for an hour and a half either side of high tide.  The location is stunning, with fruit trees next to the creek.  The tidal mudflats attract wading birds, including oystercatchers, turnstones and black-headed gulls.  The village features the exquisite St Margaret of Antioch church, dating back to eighth century Saxon times, with regular additions since, such as the thirteenth century tower.  Lower Halstow is also a popular location for filmmakers.  Credits include the Hollywood blockbuster Wonder Woman, with scenes filmed at the wharf.

At this time of year Lower Halstow is where I come to pick blackberries. It’s so peaceful, I use the time to think things through with the sound of the birds all around me, wonderful.

Sited at the head of the peaceful Halstow Creek, (accessible HW +/- 1.5 hours) adjacent beautiful Saxon church, a few minutes along the sea wall. The club welcomes visitors to use the club to get ashore and has moorings located nearby, specifically for their use. The club is predominantly a sailing cruising club catering for craft up to 35 feet length, but it also has a few very keen and active dinghy sailors. During the season and extremely popular series of “Top of the Tide” races is held. Organised events also cater for the cruising yachtsman, as well as the not-too-competitive cruiser turned racer person.

Founded Year

Lower Halstow Yacht Club, regarded by many as the friendliest yacht club on the River Medway, can be found at the head of Halstow creek in the lovely village of Lower Halstow. The club, affiliated to both the RYA and the MSBA, offers members informal racing and cruising throughout the summer months all backed up with a variety of off-water social events. LHYC exists very much on a self help basis and now boasts many facilities all achieved through the hard work of the membership. Visitor bouys are available, however, the tide at most only provides suitable depth for one and a half hours each side of high water.
