Harriot II Riverboat (Montgomery) Travel Guide

Amidst Montgomery’s rich tapestry of history and culture, the Harriott II Riverboat stands as a proud reminder of the city’s ties to the Alabama River.

Whether you’re a Montgomery native or a tourist eager to experience Southern hospitality at its finest, a cruise on the Harriott II is an experience you won’t want to miss. This guide delves into the magic of the Harriott II, offering insights and tips for a memorable voyage.

  • Introduction to the Harriott II Riverboat

The Harriott II Riverboat, anchored at Montgomery’s Riverfront Park, is a majestic 19th-century riverboat replica. With its gleaming white facade, grand paddlewheel, and red accents, it’s a nostalgic throwback to the days when steamboats ruled the rivers.

  • A Glimpse into History

While the Harriott II itself is a modern construction, Montgomery has a longstanding riverboat history. The original Harriott, for which Harriott II is named, operated in the 1820s, transporting cotton, goods, and passengers along the Alabama River. Today’s riverboat is a tribute to this storied past, ensuring that Montgomery’s riverboat legacy continues to thrive.

  • Cruising Options

The Harriott II offers a range of cruising experiences tailored to different tastes:

a. Scenic Cruises: Perfect for those looking to relax and enjoy the Alabama River’s tranquil beauty. These cruises often come with insightful narrations about Montgomery’s history and its relationship with the river.

b. Dinner Cruises: A gourmet experience, these cruises feature a delicious spread of Southern dishes, live music, and dancing.

c. Themed Nights: From jazz nights to blues cruises, the Harriott II frequently hosts themed evenings, allowing guests to immerse themselves in rich musical traditions.

d. Private Charters: For special occasions, the riverboat can be privately chartered, offering a personalized experience for guests.

  • Amenities Onboard

Spread over three levels, the Harriott II boasts a range of amenities:

a. The Saloon Deck: Featuring a full-service bar, concessions, and restrooms.

b. The Jubilee Deck: This is where you’ll find the dance floor, band stage, and another full-service bar.

c. The Patriot Deck: Perfect for taking in panoramic river views, it offers open-air seating and a bird’s-eye view of the paddlewheel in action.

  • What to Expect Onboard

A cruise on the Harriott II is more than just a ride; it’s an experience. Guests can expect:

a. Engaging Entertainment: From live bands to DJs, there’s always something to keep guests entertained.

b. Delicious Southern Cuisine: Depending on the cruise, guests might enjoy a buffet dinner, snacks, or themed meals.

c. A Friendly Crew: Known for their Southern hospitality, the crew is always on hand to ensure guests have a memorable experience.

  • Tips for Travelers

a. Reservations: Popular cruises, especially themed or dinner cruises, can fill up quickly. It’s advisable to book in advance.

b. Attire: While daytime cruises are generally casual, evening cruises, especially those with dinner and dancing, might have a dressier code.

c. Weather: Given the Patriot Deck’s open nature, it’s a good idea to check the weather forecast and dress accordingly.

  • Nearby Attractions

The Harriott II docks at Riverfront Park, making it easy for guests to explore surrounding attractions:

a. Riverwalk: A scenic trail ideal for walking or jogging with picturesque views of the Alabama River.

b. Montgomery Biscuits Baseball: If you’re lucky, you might catch a game at the nearby Riverwalk Stadium.

c. Amphitheater: Located right in Riverfront Park, the amphitheater hosts a range of concerts, festivals, and events throughout the year.

  • Reviews and Testimonials

Guests frequently highlight the Harriott II’s romantic ambiance, making it a popular choice for anniversaries and date nights. The combination of southern food, soulful music, and the gentle sway of the riverboat creates a magical experience cherished by many.

  • Accessibility and Facilities

The Harriott II is equipped to accommodate guests with disabilities. However, it’s always a good idea to check in advance regarding specific needs.

Montgomery’s Harriott II Riverboat is more than just a mode of transportation; it’s a voyage through time. It’s an ode to the bygone era of grand riverboats, of sultry Southern nights filled with music, laughter, and the gentle murmur of the Alabama River. Whether you’re a history buff, a music enthusiast, or someone simply seeking a unique experience, the Harriott II promises a journey you’ll cherish long after you’ve disembarked.

River Cruises

Visit Montgomery’s scenic access to the Alabama River and choose from two unique ways to cruise the historic waterway. Pick a relaxing riverboat cruise onboard the elegant Harriott II or bring your friends and provide your own pedal power with a Sip-N-Cycle Pedal Cruise.

More than a glance back to stylish river travel in the 19th century, the Harriott II offers today’s cruisers experiences that include dinner, dancing and live entertainment. The options are ideal for a fun family outing or a romantic couple’s evening on the river. Step onboard from the convenient dock alongside the Riverwalk Amphitheater.

Getaway Cruises on the Harriott II are two hours in length and include live entertainment and a cash bar. The Wheel House Grille has a variety of food items for purchase. Indoor seating is available inside two climate-controlled decks as well as on the outside patio. The Dinner Cruise is also two hours and features a full plated dinner plus the cash bar. Dinner cruises require advance ticket purchase.

Great fun for a group of friends, the Sip-N-Cycle Pedal Cruise offers an interactive way to enjoy the Alabama River. The boat can welcome 20 passengers and has 12 pedal stations around a central bar. Try the Mixer Cruise where you can bring your own food and alcohol and share the cruise with others. If you prefer to have the boat to yourself, the Private Cruises are perfect for family reunions, birthdays, and bachelor/bachelorette parties.

The 90-minute river excursion has a high-energy atmosphere with a sound system to keep the partying rocking. If you and your crew tire out before the trip is over, the U.S. Coast Guard-certified captain and the first mate will take over and let you relax.

MiLB pays homage to the Negro Leagues in June

On June 18, America's oldest professional ballpark will host a Double-A game between the Montgomery Biscuits and Birmingham Barons with MiLB at Rickwood Field: A Tribute to the Negro Leagues . This game, with Montgomery suiting up as the Gray Sox and Birmingham playing as the Black Barons, will kick off festivities in Birmingham that will culminate with a Major League game between the Cardinals and Giants on June 20.

While Rickwood Field takes its deserving place in the center of the baseball world that week, there are dozens of other Negro Leagues tributes occuring around Minor League Baseball this month. In fact, even the Barons have another tribute planned -- a Salute to the Negro Leagues over three straight games from June 13-15 (tickets here ).

On Friday, June 14, Birmingham will don special Black Barons jerseys. On Saturday, June 15, the club welcomes George Foster to Regions Field to take part in the Salute to the Negro Leagues. Foster was a five-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion with the Cincinnati Reds club best known as the "Big Red Machine." He finished his 18-year career with the White Sox in 1986.

Here's a look at what some other clubs are doing to pay homage to the Negro Leagues this month. To be clear, this is not a complete list -- check your local team's promo schedule to see what's on tap in your area.

T-Town Clowns (Tulsa Drillers, Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers) - June 14 Beginning in 2010, the Tulsa Drillers have staged an annual tribute to the T-Town Clowns, a semi-pro entity that competed from 1946-65. Two seasons ago was particularly special, as the team’s players took the field in T-Town Clowns uniforms for the first time. That will continue for the third straight season. The Drillers’ home of ONEOK Field is located in Tulsa’s Greenwood District, a prosperous neighborhood known as “Black Wall Street” that was decimated by a horrific race massacre in 1921. Get tickets »

Durham Black Sox (Durham Bulls, Triple-A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays) - June 14 The Bulls will pay tribute to the former Negro League teams of Durham by donning special Durham Black Sox jerseys and hats. The Black Sox were one of several Negro Leagues teams that played in the city of Durham, along with the Durham Eagles and Durham Rams, from the 1920s through 1963. Get tickets »

Greenville Black Spinners (Greenville Drive, High-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox) - June 15 Greenville and the Upstate region has a rich baseball history. Everyone knows the stories of “Shoeless” Joe Jackson and others, including Tommy Lasorda, Nolan Ryan, and Jim Rice. However, the lesser known stories include the Greenville Black Spinners, St. Anthony’s, and Sterling High School -- teams that also utilized Mayberry Park and Meadowbrook Park. Mayberry Park, which sat just beyond the outfield wall of Meadowbrook Park, was built in the 1920s for Black children at a time they were not allowed to play in the city’s segregated parks. Get tickets »

Fresno Tigers (Fresno Grizzlies, Single-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies) - June 15 Not much is known about the Fresno Tigers , who competed in the six-team West Coast Negro League in 1946. The Grizzlies, seeking to educate fans about this chapter of their city’s baseball history, played a game as the Tigers in 2022. There weren’t any photos of the Tigers in action, so the Grizzlies created logos and uniforms based on a modern interpretation of what the team might look like. Get tickets »

Jacksonville Red Caps (Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, Triple-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins) - June 15 The Jacksonville Red Caps played in the Negro American League in 1938 and from 1941-42 at Durkee Field in Jacksonville. Meanwhile, the Redbirds took part by donning the identity of the team's sister club from Akron, the Black Tyrites. The Black Tyrites were one of the top independent Negro League teams in 1933. Josh Gibson, who played for the Red Caps, is considered one of the best best power hitters and catchers in baseball history. Despite never playing in the Major Leagues, he became the second Negro Leagues player to be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972. Get tickets »

Salt Lake Occidentals (Salt Lake Bees, Triple-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels) - June 21 The Occidentals were formed in Salt Lake in 1906 and quickly established themselves as one of the best teams in the western United States. They joined the otherwise all-white Utah State League in 1908 and the following season took home a league championship. When the Salt Lake Bees played as the Occidentals last season, they did so wearing uniforms that were inspired by contemporary newspaper accounts. Get tickets »

Hartford Schoolboys (Hartford Yard Goats, Double-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies) - June 29 For the second straight season, the Yard Goats will honor legendary Negro Leagues pitcher -- and Hartford native -- Johnny "Schoolboy" Taylor . In his senior year at Hartford's Bulkeley High School in 1934, Taylor set a Connecticut state record with 25 strikeouts in a single game against New Britain High School. That caught the attention of Major League scouts. Of course, this was before Jackie Robinson broke Major League Baseball’s color barrier in 1947, and baseball's unwritten agreement against white teams signing Black players limited Taylor's options. The hurler opted to join the semi-pro Hartford Twilight Baseball League. Get tickets »

Pilot of small plane dead after crash into a Massachusetts river

LAWRENCE, Massachusetts (AP) — A small plane crashed into a Massachusetts river Monday, killing the lone pilot onboard, authorities said.

The plane plunged into the Merrimack River near the town of Lawrence at about 2:15 p.m., authorities said.

Graham Rowe, the North Andover deputy fire chief, said the pilot’s body remained in the overturned aircraft in several feet of water and that emergency responders were at the scene.

“We do have dive team members in the water trying to assess everything,” Rowe told reporters. “The plane appears to be intact.”

He said the plane had taken off from the Lawrence Municipal Airport, but because it wasn’t a typical commercially constructed plane authorities had limited information about the aircraft. He added that he didn’t know how long it had been in the air or where it was headed.

The Federal Aviation Administration identified the plane as a single-engine Van’s Aircraft RV-6A.

Van’s Aircraft produces kit airplanes that are often amateur-built and assembled at home.

Authorities did not immediately identify the pilot.

Television video footage showed the plane upside down in the river as an emergency fire crew responded in a boat.

The FAA said it would participate in an investigation into the crash led by the National Transportation Safety Board.
