Virgin Charter Yachts

Virgin Charter Yachts is a private charter company that has specialized in offering motor yachts and power catamarans for charter in the British Virgin Islands since 1996.    Our company offers a personally curated fleet of only ~25 luxury yachts for charter, and this allows us to provide extensive preventative maintenance to our yachts and they show more like private yachts rather than the typical 'charter boats' seen at the big companies that have 300+ yachts to maintain.

The primary benefit to charter yacht ownership is that by offering your yacht for charter, you are able to generate charter income that in most cases, offsets all the annual costs of ownership.  Rather than paying your monthly dockage, insurance, power/water, maintenance etc. out-of-pocket, the revenue you make from charter covers these monthly bills for you.  In addition to charter revenue, there are huge financial opportunities through leveraging effective tax strategies for your yacht purchase as well as depreciation.

Part of the appeal of yacht ownership with Virgin Charter Yachts is we provide a hassle-free ownership experience. With more than two decades of charter yacht experience, we coordinate all aspects of ownership so the only thing you need to worry about is when you want to come down and enjoy time aboard Felix Felicis!  We take care of coordinating everything related to yacht ownership and chartering; insurance, dockage, maintenance, reservations, crew, booking calendars, marketing, parts ordering, polishing schedules etc. It is truly WORRY-FREE yacht ownership!  Since we are a boutique company, we intentionally limit our fleet to ~25 yachts, in order to offer the highest quality service to our customers and owners and to keep our yachts impeccably maintained.

We take pride in our happy customers

My wife and I want to take a moment to recognize Cynthia Wummer for her amazing work during the purchase of our first boat, a 2018 Lagoon 40 (SV Southern Wild). We were so incredibly pleased with Cynthia and the way she handled this difficult and complex process with ease! She gave us the “white glove” treatment every step of the way. She was extremely proactive in setting up multiple virtual meetings, she expertly and personally handled our survey abroad, and she even guided the sellers throughout. She was a bulldog when we needed her to be during the negotiations (we honestly felt sorry for the sellers!) but she was also eloquent and used a gentle touch when we hit her with many questions. We can’t say enough about this outstanding experience with Cynthia. She reflects outstanding credit upon The Multihull Company and you guys are lucky to have her on your team! Thank you all so much for making our first boat purchase not only a success, but a treasured memory.

Your team delivered on every mark. You’ve got an amazing broker in Mark Wattrus and I’m confident you will have continued success moving forward together. He was available 24/7 whenever I had questions. We had a great initial visit on the boat and his marketing plan and photos were superb

I bought a yacht that I had never seen. I did this because I trusted my broker Andrew Holland. It was not an easy job for Andrew, as I am an experienced boat builder and owner of previous yachts, but work in West Africa. Imagine how hard it was to communicate what I was looking for. Andrew came up with exactly what I wanted. He dealt with time delays, all my questions at odd hours, and was there for the survey. He reported honestly and professionally. After buying the yacht, I arrived at the boat on a Sunday night, after dark, after travelling from West Africa to the Caribbean, and found it was better than expected. He never pulled punches and made me aware of shortfalls. I expected to spend my one month leave working on the boat, but actually spent less than one week, and was able to spend 3 weeks sailing – wonderful bonus.

Thank you Andrew for putting up with all my questions, all my worries and all my crazy out of the time zone concerns – you were totally professional, but also I know that if and when we meet up, it will be like a friend finally meeting. You are always welcome on Aseka.

— Beverly Cory

Outstanding company with professional subject matter experts. If I were to buy or sell cruising sailboat, particularly a catamaran, Andrew would be my go to broker.

I have been sailing since I was a child and attended Massachusetts Maritime Academy. But when my wife and I began the process of purchasing an ocean cruising/racing catamaran, I realized that this is a world unto itself. Obviously, we needed to find someone knowledgeable to help us make an informed decision. More importantly, we needed someone honest and willing to put our interests before his or her own. I was lucky to work with Phil Berman at The Multihull Company. He repeatedly shunned the fast buck, choosing instead to work the long road to connect us with the “perfect boat”. I would be glad to recommend Phil and his company to anyone planning to purchase or sell a performance sailing machine.

— Eric Boutiette

Yacht Charter Brokers

How a yacht charter broker helps you plan the perfect vacation.

A yacht charter in the Mediterranean or the Caribbean is the ultimate vacation. But how do you go about chartering a superyacht? A yacht charter broker can help. Yacht charter brokers provide clients with destination and vessel expertise, insider’s knowledge of booking, and make the process – from planning to setting sail – smooth and stress-free.

If you’re interested in a chartering a luxury yacht , a charter broker is your best friend. Charter brokers manage the entire process – taking over all the tedious details like taxes, contracts, and negotiations, and provide you with unbiased advice and expertise about the yachts, destinations, and itineraries to choose.

But if you’re new to luxury yacht charters, you might be wondering: What exactly is a yacht charter broker? How do brokers help organize travel? And why should I consider using one?

Charter broker working on a yacht

What Is a Yacht Charter Broker?

In the simplest terms, a yacht charter broker helps clients plan, schedule, and enjoy yacht charters everywhere in the world, from Cannes to Tahiti . Charter brokers, in a way, are the client’s concierge through the entire process – helping to answer questions, find ideal motor yachts and sailing yachts available for charter, and manage all of the legal, financial, and logistical matters related to booking a once-in-a-lifetime luxury charter.

But there’s one thing to remember: Yacht charter brokers aren’t travel agents. Instead, brokers specialize in luxury yacht charters, not just travel in general. They have in-depth knowledge of the luxury yacht charter market, know the best destinations, have the scoop on available yachts, seasons to cruise, and research the legal requirements in each charter market.

They offer guidance and expertise in a few key areas:

  • Choosing Yachts : Yacht charter brokers travel to all the major boating shows – like the Miami Yacht Show, or the Cannes Yachting Festival – to visit yachts, meet with crews and get a first-hand idea of the on-board experience charter guests can expect on available yachts. Brokers put this knowledge to work for you, helping you to choose the best vessel for your needs.
  • Destinations and Itineraries : Want to explore the World Heritage sites in coastal Croatia, or take a diving trip in The Grenadines? A charter broker is your destination expert. Brokers stay up-to-date on the latest destination trends, know the best places to go – from the Caribbean to Thailand – and can help you plan a once-in-a-lifetime vacation.
  • Taxes and Legalities : Every charter destination has its own taxes, regulations, and legal requirements. The charter broker manages these aspects for you and ensures you meet all the necessary rules. That means, on charter, you don’t have to worry – the taxes and permits are taken care of.
  • Charter Brokers Work for You : Brokers don’t charge fees to you. Instead, they invoice yacht owners. Using a charter broker adds nothing to the cost of your charter – in other words, brokers add a lot of value to your charter experience.

In short : A charter broker is your personal concierge. Brokers walk you through the entire process, offering advice and guidance at every step of the way. That means planning your charter is stress-free.

Why Use a Yacht Charter Broker?

When it comes to booking a charter, you have a number of options: You can book yourself directly with charter operators, work with a travel agent, or partner with a charter broker.

So, why work with a yacht charter broker?

Here’s how the other two options fall short.

Travel agents, although knowledgeable about destinations, don’t have the industry knowledge that brokers do. They specialize in selling travel packages around the world and may do a few yacht charters per year. So, with a travel agent, you won’t get that great advice about onboard experiences or types of yachts to choose from.

Plus, travel agents don’t have in-depth knowledge of the complex legal, tax, and financial areas of chartering. And they typically book a fee on top of what you pay to charter the yacht.

You can book yourself, too.

But this means all the tedious details of booking a charter – from contracts to setting up escrow accounts, to returning preference sheets – are your responsibility. You’ll end up spending a lot of free hours communicating, organizing, and booking your vacation.

By using a charter broker, all of those responsibilities are lifted off your shoulders. You can relax while planning and have confidence knowing you have a knowledgeable advocate in your corner. Here are a few key ways brokers help:

  • It’s free! Yacht charter brokers don’t charge you fees; you get all of the benefits – planning, advising, and management – without any cost added to the total of your charter.
  • Cruising knowledge . Get expert advice about lesser-known and up-and-coming destinations, adventure-packed itineraries, and most-see towns, beaches, and sights along the way.
  • Simplified communications . Your broker serves as your intermediary with the yacht owner and captain. This can save you dozens of phone calls, emails, and text messages. You ask your broker a question, and they return an answer to you.
  • Emergency contact . Need to add funds to your Advanced Provisioning Account while on charter, or make a last-minute change to your itinerary? Your broker solves these emergencies for you.
  • Customized trips . A broker works for you. They learn about your wants and needs, and then provide you with personalized options that fit exactly what you desire – from the perfect motor, sailing yacht or catamaran, to ensuring your on-board preferences are met.

Bottom line, yacht charter brokers work hard to make your charter experience perfect and worry-free. While on charter, you shouldn’t spend time thinking about finances, or preferences, or if the taxes have been paid. Brokers can help guarantee that.

How to Choose a Yacht Charter Broker?

There are hundreds of yacht charter brokers serving clients around the world. So, how do you find a broker that’s right for you?

For starters, choose a yacht broker with in-depth industry knowledge. There are a number of trade groups, for example, for charter brokers. Great yacht brokers belong to one or more of them:

  • International Yacht Brokers Association (IYBA)
  • Mediterranean Yacht Brokers Association (MYBA)
  • Charter Yacht Brokers Association (CYBA)
  • American Yacht Charter Association (AYCA)

Membership into these organizations is earned. Members, for example, must pass certifications, regularly attend industry events, visit yachts and crews, as well as adhere to a set of professional ethics. Look for these logos on your broker’s website – they’re a mark of trust in the industry.

Additionally, look for brokers who remain committed to your needs. Great brokers want to help you find a charter yacht that matches exactly what you want. Need a great onboard gym? A broker should make that happen. It’s a bad sign when brokers try to push you to choose a yacht that doesn’t meet your needs.

Also, look for brokers who have in-depth experience with your desired cruising grounds. Many brokers specialize in a few destinations around the world. If you’re looking to book a charter in the South of France for example, choose a charter broker with connections and experience booking charter in that area.

Why Use A Yacht Charter Broker and What Do They Do?

Why Use A Yacht Charter Broker and What Do They Do?

Chartering a yacht is about more than the boat you’re on; it’s an all-round, personalized experience that can be tailored to your specific needs. To make this happen, you need a top-notch broker to take care of the small details in planning your charter, to ensure your vacation runs smoothly along every step of the way.

From boat selection to itinerary planning, contract negotiation, preparation prior to charter, and support during your trip, brokers draw from a collective pool of many years of personal experience to help clients navigate the intricacies of yacht charters across the world. In this article, we’ll discuss why you should use a broker and exactly the kind of work they do to guarantee you have a good time on your charter.

what is a yacht charter broker

Match You With the Perfect Crew

Charter brokers attend multiple yacht shows every year, acquiring knowledge about the different boats available and about the crews themselves. Brokers in particular know that the crew is half the experience, and have a keen eye for matching guests with the right crew. To guarantee an excellent time on your trip, brokers will look for the right group of professional crew members based on your precise expectations and requirements.

First-hand Knowledge of Inventory

Charter brokers are actively involved in the industry as part of their day-to-day work, which means they’ve accumulated a wealth of knowledge and expertise over the years.

Besides attending yacht shows, brokers also participate in regular seminars to stay up-to-date with all the critical information involved behind the scenes of a charter, such as different yacht models and their respective layouts. With this knowledge in their arsenal, charter brokers are able to find the perfect yacht to suit their clients’ charter party and specific requirements for their trip.

The boat shows are also a good opportunity to check up on recent maintenance work and generate trustworthy partners to gather precise information about the upkeep of individual yachts in the future. This added work from your broker ensures each yacht is in excellent condition for its next charter.

Provide Expert, Unbiased Advice to Protect your Interests

You can go to your broker for advice and any other requests you have during your vacation, as they offer impartial advice and selection based on their industry knowledge. They travel to charter destinations regularly, acquiring first-hand information that will be invaluable to you when planning your charter.

Should anything unexpected happen during your charter, you’ll have direct contact with the broker to assist and help you resolve any issues you may have. Brokers can also assist with any licenses and permits, country entry requirements, continuously changing covid regulations, and advice on accommodation.

Besides ensuring you get matched with the best available crew, brokers are uniquely positioned to negotiate contracts and terms on your behalf. They are also bound by their fiduciary responsibility to protect the interest of their clients and have a deep knowledge of the details and implications of your contract.

Having a broker is a fantastic way to cover any concerns that come up on your charter, as they have long-standing professional and personal relationships with industry contacts and yacht managers. Having a third-party negotiate terms and conditions of your contract will put your mind at ease, so you can rest easy knowing that your needs are being protected.

Logistics, Itinerary and Menu

Charter brokers work with a Preference Sheet, which is a form that gets completed by the entire chartering group. This sheet outlines clients’ preferences for the charter regarding food, drinks, allergies, itinerary, potential destinations to visit, and much more.

As a client, this sheet is yours to provide as much detail as you like before your trip.

The Preference Sheet is then shared with the entire crew of your boat, so they can prepare the best possible itinerary and menu for your charter to match your exact specifications. Often, clients will also get a copy of the menu ahead of their departure date, so they know in advance what to expect. This way, clients know what meals will be prepared during their charter and whether their dietary restrictions or requirements will be catered for. This, of course, includes menus for vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free clients, and much more.

It’s important to note that some charters are not all-inclusive. These charters are called ‘Plus Expenses’ charters. In these cases, the charter expenses will be calculated by your broker to help you plan the total cost of your trip, which will cover items like food, drinks, fuel, and more.

Brokers will also inform the client if, once their charter is completed, there is a remaining Advanced Provisioning Allowance (APA) balance that will be returned to them or, if on the contrary, the client needs to pay an additional to cover what the APA did not provide for.

Does it Cost More To Use A Broker?

Charter brokers work tirelessly behind the scenes, to ensure every guest is provided for during their chartering vacation. The best part: their advice and support have no additional cost for the client, as it is a service paid by the owner of the yacht. In this way, brokers offer free personalized attention through every step of the chartering process.

What is a charter broker?

  • June 21, 2024

As a yacht charter broker, I specialize in organizing personalized yacht vacations for clients. I spend my days researching yachts, crews, and the market to give you expert advice on every part of your charter.

what is a yacht charter broker

From choosing the best yacht to planning the perfect destinations and itineraries, I cover it all. I handle all negotiations with yacht managers, ensuring you get the best deal that suits your budget. I’m well-versed in the entire process, including contracts, insurance, and international legal issues, which can be challenging even for experienced charterers.

Having recently worked in the industry as a yacht chef, I know firsthand how charters should run and how amazing they can be when paired with a beautiful yacht, and fun, professional crew.

I work directly with yacht fleet managers, much like a travel agent, ensuring that your money is secure and your interests are protected throughout the process. From planning your itinerary to arranging on-board amenities and activities, I will be there for every detail. If any issues arise, although rare, I act as a mediator to resolve them smoothly. My goal is to provide you with a luxurious and worry-free yachting adventure tailored just for you.

How to Charter a Superyacht

Navigating the world of yacht charters can be tricky; our guide breaks down what you need to know.

By Kim Ayling

nero yacht aerial view

With privacy and flexibility remaining high on UHNW’s vacation checklist, chartering a superyacht is more appealing than ever. Picture, your own boat, a dedicated crew, a fully customizable route and a select group of your nearest and dearest – what could be better? However, the world of private yacht chartering can be as elusive as it is luxurious, making hiring your own boat a tricky process – especially for first-timers.

From the pros and cons of enlisting the help of a broker and choosing the perfect vessel, to understanding when to book and planning your itinerary – not to mention the all-important question of how much it costs to charter a luxury yacht – there are plenty of hurdles before you reach the water. To help you and your guests enjoy a worry-free vacation out on the ocean, we has compiled a comprehensive guide to chartering a superyacht.

[See more: How Much Does it Actually Cost to Charter a Yacht?]

What is a yacht charter?

If you’re new to the world of yacht chartering, even the language can be alienating. A yacht charter is the process of exclusively hiring a yacht for yourself and your guests.

While most charters are for leisure, be it with friends or family, some individuals and companies choose to hire a yacht for business-related reasons, with the undivided service and uncompromised privacy making boats an excellent place to hold meetings and conferences, while simultaneously impressing clients.

The length of a yacht charter depends entirely on your needs; some choose to book for a long weekend or even just a matter of hours if hosting a meeting, whereas others opt for an extended vacation and may charter a yacht for several weeks or even months. Regardless of duration or motive, privately hiring a yacht is always considered a charter.

What is a yacht charter broker?

Using a broker to charter a yacht is at your discretion; however, if it is your first time chartering, using a broker is highly recommended – especially when hiring a larger-than-life superyacht. Yacht brokers will draw on a large network of connections and extensive industry knowledge to help find the best vessel for your unique requirements, as well as the best price.

Once you’ve had an initial consultation, a broker will typically offer a selection of yachts that suit your needs and help you make a final decision. From here, the yacht broker will handle the entire booking process, from securing the initial boat booking to planning each element of your onboard itinerary, including docking points. A reputable yacht charter broker will also be available to contact throughout the duration of your time on board, giving you and your guests complete peace of mind.

Occasionally, first-time charters mistakenly think that booking directly will shave some digits off the total cost, but it actually falls on the yacht owner/charter company to pay the broker fees – not the charterer. In fact, you will often find that a broker will rely on their insider connections to secure the best deal for their clients.

When it comes to choosing a yacht broker you have plenty to choose from, but names like Burgess , Fraser and Northrop & Jonson dominate the superyacht realm. Some people opt for a freelance yacht charter broker, but we’d suggest only heading down this route if you have a pre-existing relationship or they come highly recommended by someone you trust. You should also ensure that any broker you work with is a member of the MYBA Worldwide Yachting Association.

How to choose a yacht

bold explorer yacht by silver yachts

While your yacht broker will do the hard work when it comes to choosing a yacht, calling upon their wide boat knowledge to present a selection of yachts to you, to be able to do this properly they will need a solid understanding of your preferences, requirements and budget.

The key things you should consider when chartering a superyacht are: the number of guests you want to bring on board (remember the legal limit for most yachts is 12 overnight guests, including personal staff); whether or not the yacht needs to be child-friendly, the amount of indoor/outdoor space you’d like on board; where you’d like to travel; and the onboard amenities you’d like – for example, is an indoor swimming pool a priority or does a dancefloor sound more appealing?

The type of yachting vacation you’re seeking is also important when choosing a boat. For intrepid travelers with a taste for adventure, a sturdier explorer yacht such as Silver Yachts’ Bold or Ragnar by Royal Niestern Sand would be more suitable than a classic yacht, designed for luxury and comfort.

However, if it is your first time chartering a superyacht, don’t feel concerned about going in clueless – your yacht broker will be able to guide you through every step of choosing a vessel.

Bareboat vs skippered superyacht charter

When chartering a luxury yacht, you will sometimes be given the choice between a ‘bareboat’ or ‘skippered’ charter – bareboat being a crewless charter and skippered including a full complement of staff. However, you will find that when verging into superyacht territory, all charters are skippered for both your safety and comfort.

Typical crew members will include a captain, engineer, second and third officers, bosun, chef, chief stew, and one or more stewards. Your broker can help explain the roles of each, as well as support with hiring additional crew members.

For example, if you have a taste for adventure, ensure that there is a watersports instructor within the crew. Looking for a more relaxing onboard experience? Ask your broker to look into securing a masseuse for your journey.

When to book a superyacht charter

When to begin booking a yacht charter is an important question. Leading charter company Northrop & Johnson recommends reaching out to a broker no later than 10 months in advance if you want to travel during peak times (July and August in the summer season, Christmas and New Year during winter), and three to six months ahead for quieter periods. However, with popular yachts booking up as much as a year in advance, it’s advisable to reach out to a broker at least 12 months ahead of time if you have specific boat or date requirements.

When booking in advance, remember that local events will heavily impact availability. For example, if you’re planning a European tour, take note of events such as the Cannes Film Festival and the Monaco Grand Prix when both vessels and docking spaces will be in high demand.

How much does it cost to charter a superyacht?

It’s no secret that yacht charters are expensive, with many first-timers unprepared for the hidden costs. It’s generally accepted that the biggest price indicator of a yacht charter is boat size – so if you’re heading into superyacht territory, expect an impressive fee.

However, other factors will impact the cost of chartering a superyacht , such as crew reputation, ship design and the age of the vessel. For example, Fraser Yachts offer a week on the 298.5-ft Moonlight II which was first built in 2005 from €750,000 (approximately $815,000), but prices for the 278-ft Solandge, which was built in 2013 and refitted in 2019, begin at €1m ($1.1m) per week.

Although some charter costs are inclusive, meaning expenses such as captain and crew, fuel, food and drink are included, you’ll find that a ‘plus expenses’ charter is more common. With such charters, only the crew and ship are included in the price, an ‘Advance Provisioning Allowance’ (APA) is used to cover the necessary extras and is usually around 30% of the weekly charter fee. What the APA doesn’t cover, however, is crew gratuity which, although given at your discretion, is very much expected, with the going rate around 15-20%.

To avoid tarnishing your vacation with unexpected fees and charges, ask your broker for a full price breakdown beforehand, including any potential docking fees and additional taxes.

How to Choose a Yacht Charter Broker

Should i use a specialist or a travel agent.

You should choose a specialist charter broker, one with many years proven expertise specifically booking crewed private charters. The ideal charter broker will have those years of experience and will have attained membership in worldwide charter associations like MYBA. We have those decades of experience and attained our membership many years ago.

If I use one Charter Broker like you- Can I still choose from every crewed yacht?

YES, unlike many others, we truly do have access to every crewed private charter yacht available to charter in popular cruising grounds worldwide.

Do we have enough experience that you can trust?

YES, Respected worldwide, we have been helping clients plan fantastic crewed yacht charters worldwide for over 20 years!

How to choose a yacht charter broker in 6 steps.

1. Choose one solely focussed on you - Our founders over 20 years ago knew that exceptional personal service is the cornerstone of a successful business and that is the company culture today. That's why we go above and beyond to ensure that our customers receive the highest level of service possible, and our specialists are available to clients 7 days a week thruout the booking process through to the end of their charter.

2. Proven Knowledge and Experience - We were one of the first USA based companies to earn membership in the Worldwide Yachting Association 'MYBA', and have memberships in CYBA, AYCA, and IYBA. From the moment you contact us, you will be talking to a experienced charter broker, who will take the time to understand your yachting adventure ideas and provide you with amazing yacht charter options that match your ideas.

3. A Charter Broker is better than a tour company? Yes, a specialist charter broker is not only necessary, it's very prudent to use one. While it might seem like chartering directly through a tour company, travel agent, an owner or a captain someone knows would be the ideal (and cheapest) way to rent a yacht, it's not.

4. Yacht Charter is complicated and specialised It's easy to say " I can help you find a yacht" but other than the challenge of finding a suitable yacht to charter, the compelling reason to use a dedicated charter broker is simple:- Tour companies likely have the expertise for land based tours better than anyone but it is reality that yachting is so unique and the contracts used so specialised, that you will benefit hugely from the advice of a charter specialist - especially when it is provided with no additional cost to you.

5. Ability to find the right yacht, not any yacht? Yes, the most experienced charter brokers have access to every fully crewed, private yacht available for charter, they know the managers of the yachts, and know the right questions to ask of the managers regarding aspects of the various yachts each manager is responsible for. It is better for you to book your charter taking advantage of the advice of a true specialist yacht charter broker vs well meaning information from a vacation planner whose knowledge base is perhaps more land biased.

6. Choose a broker who is trusted by their peers , MYBA , the worldwide yachting association, was founded to ensure clients know they are dealing with a professional and trusted yacht charter broker. Chartering a yacht through a MYBA Member like us ensures you get professional expertise. Companies specifically have to earn membership in MYBA by having the right experience, references for successful charters, and proving their expertise and knowledge.

So - a specialist charter broker is needed YES, your broker represents you and only you. The right broker will know all the nuances that have to come together to booking a successful yacht charter for you.

How our charter expertise works for you

We are independent and work with all established luxury crewed yacht managers around the world without being biased or limited to presenting yachts to our clients from any particular fleet or set of charter yachts. Our role is to represent you, the client, as your charter broker , helping you identify the ideal yacht and providing unbiased and useful advice based on our experience, knowledge, and awareness of available charter yachts that may suit your particular needs. Our commitment is to you, the client, not to the owner.

The choice is yours, and we'd prefer of course you contact us, regardless however we'd certainly recommend you work with a charter broker you feel comfortable with and who understands your ideas and unique needs. We are happy to chat with you first without any obligation to see how we can help you.

Chartering a fully crewed yacht is a complex matter and often we talk to clients who have never chartered like this before. That's where we can excel as your broker! Our goal is that you remain excited about your vacation, and we’ll help you with all the details, perhaps even providing answers to questions you hadn’t considered.

More reasons to use a Specialist Charter Broker.

Memberships in the yachting organization's require different levels of qualification, but we believe it is important to both belong and contribute to our industry. Some of the requirements for membership typically include proving certain experience, knowledge, and participation. Typically requiring proof of a track record of successful charter bookings, establishing a knowledge of available yachts, managing clients deposits professionally, preparing, utilizing, and utilisation of the preferred contracts.

Charter specialists book private yachts for clients every day, year after year, which amounts to understanding every possible situation and being trained to expertly match client to yacht. There is no need for you to discover pitfalls from inexperience. They also participate in the major charter shows worldwide and interview the crew members on the yachts to learn which crews might suit different clients the best.

The very best charter brokers will be objective and unbiased. They want happy clients, and they want repeat business. Personally, we look forward to client reviews after their charters. We go above and beyond to ensure that our customers receive the highest level of service possible.

What Happens If Something Goes Wrong?

While the majority of yacht charters proceed happily and uneventfully, occasionally an issue may come up. In these very rare situations, we are here to be on your side helping solve the issue. All charter contracts are between the client and the actual owner of the yacht, so while we cannot dictate a solution for you with the owner, we can help you work towards a solution which satisfies you based on our experience and reputation within the industry.

Ready to talk to the right yacht charter broker?

We'd like you to choose us of course, but the most important factor is to work with someone qualified and who understands you. It's worth the time, and there is no extra charge to work with an expert like us.

Where to find a charter broker

A  yacht charter broker  researches charter yachts, crews and the market on a daily basis and can offer you advice about every component of your charter, from the most suitable yacht to the best destinations and itineraries. They also attend seminars about marine law, contracts and destinations so are fully informed about the entire process including contracts, insurance policies and international legal considerations, all of which even the most seasoned charterer will struggle with on their own.

Retail charter brokers work directly with the yacht fleet managers and, similar to how a travel agent works on your behalf, will hold all money and protect the client’s interests throughout the process. They will also act as a buffer should, although very rare, any problems arise.

There are four main organisations that  yacht charter brokers  belong to, including MYBA, CYBA International, FYBA, and AYCA.

  • FYBA - Florida Yacht Brokers Association
  • CYBA - Charter Yacht Brokers Association
  • MYBA - Worldwide Yachting Association
  • GYA - Greek Yachting Association
  • AYCA - American Yacht Charter Association

Although any charter broker from anywhere in the world can book any charter yacht anywhere in the world. Many charter brokers belong to more than one organisation, but looking out for these four leading logos is an important place to start when finding the right broker for you.

What is a Yacht Broker?

what is a yacht charter broker

A yacht broker is someone who helps you buy or sell your boat , not only sourcing possible yachts or buyers, but also negotiating prices, marketing yachts for sale, drawing up legal documents, and giving you expert industry advice. On occasion, a yacht broker will represent both the buyer and the seller in a transaction, negotiating to deliver a fair deal to both parties.

A trustworthy, knowledgeable yacht broker makes the process of buying or selling a yacht an enjoyable, worry-free process, where you can be sure you’re getting the right price. With so many yacht brokers out there, it’s extremely important that you choose a broker who offers experience and integrity, as well as a great record in buying and selling yachts. It’s also important to find a yacht brokerage that pools the talent and resources of all the brokers in the team, rather than relying on the less effective ‘one yacht broker per client’ method common in the majority of yacht brokerages.

Worth Avenue Yachts has a team of experienced brokers with an exceptional sales record, a superb marketing team, and an extensive global database of VIP clients. Having sold over 1.2 billion dollars of yachts since launch in 2011, Worth Avenue Yachts sells yachts over 50% faster than the industry average, sold almost 10% of all yachts over 100′ in 2016, and is a market leader in the sale of Westport yachts for sale .

what is a yacht charter broker

What sets Worth Avenue Yachts apart is their revolutionary approach to the brokerage model. Realizing that assigning only one broker per client meant that the client was missing out on the expertise and client networks of all the other brokers in the team, Worth Avenue Yachts broke the mold by creating a brokerage model where all brokers work together to deliver outstanding service and speed of sale to each and every client. Where brokers working independently for commission might jealously guard their client networks and leads, Worth Avenue Yachts deliver exceptional service through collaboration, and their clients benefit from over 100 years of combined broker experience. It’s a model that has seen this relatively young company surge to the forefront of the yacht brokerage industry in record speed.

Yacht Broker Brian and Yacht Broker Michael, CEOs at Worth Avenue Yachts

What Does a Yacht Broker Do For The Buyer?

They discuss your yachting needs and preferences to refine your search for the perfect yacht. Their industry expertise comes in extremely useful at this stage, as they can discuss the merits of different builds, hull types and cruising performance, as well as recommend particular designers or yacht layouts that you might like. Or can go through all the options of new yacht construction .

The yacht broker then uses your chosen parameters to search for the perfect yacht for your needs, across their global database, client lists, and boat show experience.

The yacht broker is by your side as you view your shortlisted yachts in marinas and at boat shows – like the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show (the world’s largest in-water yacht show which Worth have a large presence at every year) – all the while offering expert guidance on the pros and cons of each vessel, as well as suggesting the right price to pay, the potential resale value and charter opportunities.

Once you have decided on your dream yacht, the broker takes care of the legal side of the sale, from price negotiations to drawing up the contract, to discussing the results of surveys and sea trials.

After the sale is finalized and you take delivery of your new superyacht, some elite brokerages offer after-sale services such as management of your vessel and charter marketing services .

What Does a Yacht Broker Do For The Seller?

A yacht broker sits down with you to discuss what price the yacht should command on the current market, while advising possible improvements to fetch a higher price. The broker will build a thorough knowledge of your yacht from its on/board facilities and cruising history to its crew, in order to thoroughly show off your yacht to prospective buyers.

Once the price is decided on and the broker is deeply familiar with all the selling points of your yacht, the marketing process will begin. Worth Avenue yachts has a superb marketing department, placing online and print advertisements as well as conducting direct marketing campaigns to an extensive list of VIP clients.

Your yacht broker will show interested buyers through the yacht, creating a sense of excitement and the yachting experience in the client. Your broker may also show your yacht at international yacht shows : an ideal opportunity to generate interest and have your yacht viewed by prospective buyers, other brokers, and interested press.

Once a buyer is found, your broker will represent your interests in the sale, from drawing up contracts and negotiating counter-offers, to discussing survey results and conducting sea trials with the buyer.

Your yacht broker is there to offer expert advice and make the buying and selling process stress-free and easy to understand. From decoding legal jargon to ensuring you get the best deal possible, a reputable yacht broker is an essential partner on your yacht buying or selling journey.

The Beginner’s Guide to Chartering a Yacht With a Crew

what is a yacht charter broker

By Paul Sullivan

  • Feb. 13, 2015

ADAM ROSENFELD, a lifelong Miami resident, needed a vacation, but he was struggling to persuade his wife to go anywhere with their toddler in tow. Gone were the days when the couple could jet around Asia, jamming as many things into a vacation as they wanted.

“To her, what fun would it have been being on vacation with a 1-year-old?” he said.

So he decided to pony up for a vacation that would cost a lot more than he normally spent but would guarantee that all three of them could get away and relax: He chartered a 126-foot Norship yacht for four days in the Bahamas.

“It was the only thing I could have gotten her to go along with,” Mr. Rosenfeld said. “This was my way of actually getting her to go through with it. It was something to really look forward to and was very exciting.”

The yacht, called Impulsive, usually charters for around $100,000 a week plus expenses like food, fuel and gratuities for the crew. That can add another 20 to 30 percent or more to the bill, depending on destination. Mr. Rosenfeld would not specify the price, but he said because it was just four days in the yacht’s off-season, he paid less than half of that.

(To put the cost in perspective: The yacht is listed for sale at just under $3 million, down from nearly $4 million at the start of last year.)

“It’s a bigger number because it’s one number,” he said. “It wasn’t that much more expensive than being in Asia for two weeks, with everything from the round-trip travel to the hotel and food. Then again, I’m not going to Asia every week.”

He was hooked on the experience. But he admitted he had gotten lucky: A friend had chartered the same boat so he knew what to expect, from the fittings to, more important, the crew.

Given that this is a prime time for chartering in the Caribbean before many of the big boats are moved elsewhere for the summer, how does someone who has never chartered a yacht before go about doing it? The short answer is, slowly.

The job of a charter broker — which is how most large yachts get leased — is to know the yachts, their crews and the owner’s agents.

“It’s different seeing a yacht on the Internet and feeling a yacht when you step on board,” said Katie Macpherson, luxury yacht charter specialist at Worth Avenue Yachts in Palm Beach, Fla. “Getting an idea of the spacing, the carpet, the materials, the TV in relation to the sofa — there are a lot of aspects of the yacht you can’t see in photos on the Internet.”

Ms. Macpherson said she likes to start first-timers off with a comparatively small yacht: Her preference is a 112-foot Westport , which has four staterooms. She said it costs $49,500 for a week, plus expenses.

“I don’t like to overwhelm people with massive yachts right out of the box,” she said. “For somebody who hasn’t chartered before, you want something that is comfortable that they’ll have a great time on and has a great crew and just knock it out of the park.”

Yet like the weather on the water, rules of thumb change quickly. In this case, they depend on whether the passengers are couples out for a relaxing week of eating and sightseeing or a family with children who want to enjoy all kinds of water sports.

If it’s a trip with children, D.J. Parker, president of Neptune Yachts and president of the American Yacht Charter Association , a membership organization, recommends larger boats and a more protected first voyage.

“Whenever there are children in the trip and the boat is under 150 feet, I’d propose the British Virgin Islands,” she said. “It’s an archipelago. The wind is broken up. It’s crystal clear. And there is nothing that is typically going to bite you in the water.”

Just as important as where you’re going is the crew that is taking you there. Some are great with children and get right in there with the water toys. Others are better for couples who want to do a lot of cruising and sightseeing. Then there are the formal crews that can prepare restaurant-quality meals on the high seas.

If it is a yacht under 60 feet, Trish Cronan, president of Ocean Getaways in Fort Myers, Fla., said she likes to find “bulletproof crews” — that is, seamen who can handle any group, from the cheerful to the demanding.

“I like to know that no matter how those clients show up, that crew is going to maintain equanimity and graciousness,” she said.

People also need to be realistic about how far they can cruise in a given number of days. “If someone calls me off the cuff and says ‘I want to cruise from Croatia to Greece,’ I’ll say that’s pretty ambitious,” Ms. Parker said. “That sounds like two trips.”

But of course, as anyone who has been on even a small runabout knows, boats break all the time. And what if something big breaks when it’s your week? After all, if you get a bad room at the Ritz-Carlton, you just can ask to be moved. It may not always be that easy to pull up another 150-foot yacht in the same harbor.

“The contract has stipulations for all the eventualities,” Sharon Bahmer, a charter broker and the president of the Charter Yacht Brokers Association , said. “If there is a breakdown, there is a stipulation. If it’s force majeure or weather-related, there is a clause for that. Everything will be laid out. If the yacht is broken down, you try to find a replacement vessel so the client can continue on his charter.”

Part of this, though, is having a broker who is experienced.

Ms. Bahmer said her association had created a code of ethics for its brokers. Its members must commit to going to the various charter boat shows around the world to meet the crews and see the yachts firsthand.

They also need to have proper escrow accounts to receive and hold payments before they are dispersed to the yacht owners.

For owners, there are advantages beyond the weekly fees to putting their yachts out to charter.

“The upside for me is it covers some of my expenses and it keeps the crew busy,” said Hank Freid, chief executive of The Impulsive Group, which owns the yacht Mr. Rosenfeld chartered. “If the crew is just sitting there and maintaining the boat, they get lax. They work much more efficiently if they’re busy. And they’re making money.”

Still, for people who have both owned and chartered yachts, there is at trade-off. John Allen, a retired computer executive who lives in Sausalito, Calif., has owned sailboats and power boats of various sizes and now charters large yachts for vacations.

He said one downside of not owning a big boat was the loss of spontaneity. “You can’t say to your buddy, ‘What are you doing next weekend? You want to fly down to Miami and go fishing?’” he said.

But what is gained is flexibility. Mr. Allen said he was chartering a yacht next month to go around Turks and Caicos; a month after that, he has another one chartered in Croatia.

“If it’s my own boat, that’s a lot of moving your boat around,” he said. “You have to be organized and planned about that.”

For Mr. Rosenfeld, that first trip, over a year ago now, made a big impression. “I liked the idea of being in one place where you could kind of bounce around,” he said. “I don’t want to say it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I will do it again. I felt very comfortable and relaxed and free.”

And that is no small feat when vacationing with a toddler.

A picture caption on Saturday with an article about chartering yachts misidentified the location where the Impulsive, a yacht pictured with its captain, Sean Ives, was docked. It is at the Yacht & Brokerage Show in Miami Beach, not at the Miami International Boat Show.

Yacht Brokers: What Do They Do, Exactly and Why Do We Need Them?

yacht brokers sell yachts

Being represented by a professional brokerage house does not add a penny to the yacht purchase price for a buyer. The fee is totally paid for by the seller. Yes, the buyer’s broker is totally free to the buyer. So why not get your own broker to represent your interests when looking to buy a boat? You can have the listing broker represent both you and the seller but consider this: the listing broker’s job is to represent the seller and to get the highest possible price for the yacht, which is not necessarily your objective as the buyer.

That is why it’s best to have your own broker to represent your interests exclusively. When going into a purchase of this magnitude, yacht buyers need to know that they have a team of professionals that are acting entirely in their interests. Find a broker whom you feel comfortable with and trust and have him/her work for you. We have had buyers looking for as long as five years before actually buying (not typical, thankfully). But a good yacht broker will stick with you, educate you, and guide you through the process.

Choose a Yacht Broker Carefully

Before you choose your broker, make sure that you know what you want. Do your research and be realistic about your expectations. Decide what kind of boat will suit your needs, decide on a budget and make a list of the equipment and features on the boat that are most important to you. If you can, charter different boats to help you figure out more or less what is more important to you. For instance, will you give up a “walk around bed” to have a bigger cockpit or would you give up a big chart table to have more storage? These are extreme examples but unless you spend time on a boat, you cannot know what is important to you. Once you have a plan and a budget, it’s time to select your broker. Here are some things to consider:

Licensed & Bonded Broker

Requirements to become a broker is different in every state. Florida, because of the volume of yacht brokerage transactions, is one of the best jurisdictions in which to purchase a vessel. The laws are very favorable and very protective of the buyer. Here are some things that ensure buyers in Florida are protected:

  • To become a yacht broker in Florida, one has to do a two-year understudy period under a licensed and bonded broker as a Sales Associate before being able to apply for a Yacht and Ship Brokers License.
  • The brokers’ licenses are regulated by the state and require the broker to register with a bond ($25K errors and omissions) which is lodged with the state.
  • Brokers are required to renew the license every two years which ensures that the details on record are updated.
  • An escrow bank account is also required to be registered with the state and the details are updated at the time of license renewal.

So it’s important that your broker should be registered in the state where he/she operates for legal reasons.

Research the brokerage firm, i.e., their reputation in the industry. The biggest or most well-known brokerages are not always the best brokers. Smaller brokerages may be more personal than the very rigid structure of bigger corporations. Get testimonials from previous clients, interview your broker and make sure that they clearly understand your needs. Make sure that their specialty as a firm gels with what you are looking for. No point going to a dealer for 20ft Bayliner motor yachts when you are looking for a 50ft Bavaria Cruiser sail boat.

Yacht Broker Knowledge

The broker should be able to consult, advise, and educate the buyer on equipment or upgrades and help appoint vendors. Not only does he have to know the product/boat, but should also understand how to use the equipment and explain to a buyer how and why it is good to have certain equipment on board for your specific needs. For instance, a broker who has sailed/cruised and/or lived aboard will be better able to give the advice that a prospective cruiser needs. Weekenders or racers have totally different needs and the buyer should be aware of that.

Negotiating Skills

A good broker will know when to negotiate a little more aggressively and when to pull back. (A good deal is when both parties walk away happy). The seller’s bottom line is not always set in stone, even if they think so. Sellers always think their boats are worth more than it actually is but when you calculate holding costs like insurance, dockage, maintenance, haulout, etc., holding out for an extra $10,000 or $20,000 is not always the wisest decision. There are definite selling and buying seasons when boats will be cheaper i.e. phase-out season in the Caribbean when lots of boats go on sale from the charter fleets all at the same time. This would be the time to negotiate an incredible deal! Boats in certain regions will fetch better prices like boats in fresh water lakes. These boats typically have far less wear and tear because of the shorter seasons and the fresh water. Your broker should be aware of these market nuances.

Market Knowledge

There are currently about 80,000+ yachts listed for sale in the world. Most are in the major databases accessible also to the public, e.g., Yachtworld. However, some of the best deals are often not advertised, like bank repossessions, trade-ins, and boats that must be sold at any cost by a seller in a difficult situation. A professional broker knows where to find those “great deals” through his personal network. Brokers also have access to professional software and can compare and find the history of the real transactions on similar boats. This will give the buyer some perspective of what is out there and what to expect. We can provide photos, layouts, line drawings and spec sheets on any yacht in the world and therefore cut down on wasted trips to visit yachts that are misrepresented, unfortunately a common occurrence.

Yacht Buying Process and Logistics

The buyer’s broker is the person who ensures that all the components of the transaction are covered. The Buyer’s broker will perform the following duties:

  • Ensure that the Purchase and Sale agreement as well as all the related documents used to negotiate the purchase are well written and protect all the parties in the transaction.
  • Advise the buyer on the time line for acceptance closing etc. When doing a transaction like this the coordination, scheduling and time line is critical as follows:
  • Date of the sellers acceptance of offer
  • Scheduling the seller, buyer, brokers, surveyor and yard for haul out
  • Date of final acceptance
  • Date of closing with all related components – documentation, funding, insurance, transfer of possession etc.
  • Assist the buyer in arranging the survey, haul-outs and sea trials. We assist in the survey follow up and analyze the survey findings with the buyer. Those findings could further lower the purchase price in a second round of negotiation, a process known as “conditional acceptance”.
  • Advise the use of a documentation agent to obtain abstract of title and ensure that there are no liens or encumbrances and that the vessel is free and clear.
  • Advise on vessel insurance
  • Assist on vessel registration and flagging if it has been flagged offshore
  • Assist and advise if the boat needs to be moved from the place of acceptance to the buyers home port
  • Consult and advise the buyer on equipment or upgrades and help appoint vendors.
  • Remain a friend and valuable resource for the buyer after the transaction has closed and the buyer owns the yacht. A quick disappearance act after the check clears is not the desired result!

Specific to Florida

The broker will check if the boat can be legally sold in Florida ( Duties & Sales Tax paid) Florida broker will assist with the sales taxes, county tax and dinghy taxes, or tax exemption if you are not a Florida resident.

Make sure that your yacht broker knows the product, understands the industry, and can advise on ALL components of the transaction. All boats are not created equal, so if you are not an expert on boat construction, propulsion, sails, mechanics and electronics, get yourself a good broker and appoint an independent surveyor. They will be your best allies in the yacht buying process.

What is a Yacht Broker and Why You Should Consider Using One?

what is a yacht charter broker

Buying or selling a yacht is much like buying or selling a home. After all, a yacht is home for the few weeks every year in which an owner is cruising on it. And just as most people would use a real estate broker to buy or sell their home, many opt to work with a yacht broker to buy or sell their yacht--or a share of a yacht.

What is a yacht Broker?

A yacht broker is a yachting expert who represents a buyer and/or seller in the sale of a recreational yacht. These experts uphold industry standards of skill, competence and character in service to their clients; they follow an established code of ethics, must be members of a recognized yacht broker trade association, and take part in continuing education throughout their career.

Why are yacht brokers beneficial?

As yachting experts, yacht brokers know how to translate your unique wants, needs and lifestyle into a yachting experience fit just for you – from knowing the right size and style of yacht, to amenities, crew size, cruising location and more.

Yacht brokers also offer insider access to the yachting world. Their expert network is your expert network. If you need to make updates on your yacht before selling it, they’ll know which service providers in the area can do it best. If you want to sell a share of your yacht, they’ll know who to sell it to. If you have a specific yacht you want to buy, they’ll know where and how to find it.

Plus, when it comes to negotiating a deal, yacht brokers are your secret weapon. They negotiate yacht sales on a daily basis and have all the strategies and experience you need to get the deal you want.

Yacht Brokers and Yacht Co-Ownership

Helping someone buy or sell a yacht is a feat in and of itself. But helping someone buy or sell a share of a yacht adds a level of complexity to the process and therefore requires a unique skillset. Not only is the yacht broker tasked with finding the right seller or buyer for a yacht, but they must also find the right co-owners for you to share it with. This takes time, commitment, know-how, and the right resources – all of which our Shared Ownership Specialists can offer.

AvYachts is the expert in yacht share brokerage. Whether you’re looking to sell a share of your yacht to a like-minded partner, or you want to buy a share of a yacht, our dedicated team of yacht brokers and veteran matchmakers is here to guide you every step of the way.  Let us match you with just the right yacht, just the right partners and just the right ownership structure for you. Yacht to the fullest without the full costs of ownership.

Understanding the Role of a Yacht Broker

The world of yacht buying and selling can be complex and overwhelming, requiring expertise, market knowledge, and a keen understanding of the intricacies involved. This is where a yacht broker comes into the picture.  A yacht broker is a specialised professional who acts as an intermediary between buyers and sellers, assisting them throughout the transaction process and ensuring a smooth and successful experience.

In this article, we will delve into the role of a yacht broker, exploring their functions, benefits, challenges, and limitations. Whether you are a buyer or a seller in the yacht market, understanding the role of a yacht broker is essential to making informed decisions as to whether they might be helpful to you in achieving your goals.

Qualifications & Regulation of the Yacht Broking Industry

In general, there are no specific educational requirements to enter the field of yacht brokerage and anyone can set themselves up as a broker. However, acquiring certain qualifications and certifications can enhance a yacht broker’s credibility, knowledge, and expertise.

Many yacht brokers choose to pursue professional certifications and memberships offered by industry organisations. For example, in the United States, the Yacht Brokers Association of America (YBAA) and the International Yacht Brokers Association (IYBA) offer certification programs that provide training, education, and professional development opportunities for yacht brokers. These certifications, such as the Certified Professional Yacht Broker (CPYB) designation, demonstrate a broker’s commitment to ethical conduct, professionalism, and industry knowledge. Training does not cover the global marketplace and differences arise between jusrisdictions.

Relevant experience in the marine industry, such as sailing, boating, or yacht management, is also useful. Strong knowledge of yachts, boat construction, navigation, and other related areas is valuable in understanding the intricacies of the industry and providing expert advice to clients.

Regulation of the yacht brokerage industry varies depending on the country or region. In some jurisdictions, there may be specific licensing requirements or regulations in place to ensure ethical conduct and consumer protection. For example, in the United States, individual states may have licensing requirements for yacht brokers, while in the United Kingdom, the industry is regulated by the British Marine Federation (BMF) .

Industry organisations and associations have codes of ethics and standards of practice that their members must adhere to. These codes and standards promote professionalism, integrity, and transparency within the yacht brokerage profession.

Functions of a Yacht Broker

What is the difference between a broker and a dealer.

While a yacht broker and a boat dealer may seem similar, there are key differences between the two. A yacht broker represents the interests of either the buyer or the seller throughout the transaction process. They provide valuable guidance, conduct market research, arrange showings, negotiate prices, and assist with the necessary paperwork. On the other hand, a boat dealer typically represents a specific brand or manufacturer and sells boats directly to consumers. Dealers often focus on new boat sales and may offer additional services such as boat servicing and maintenance.

The Broker’s Role in the Buying and Selling Process – Buyers Broker vs. Sellers Broker

Where employed, the yacht broker plays a vital role in ensuring a smooth and successful transaction.

A buyer’s broker exclusively represents the interests of the buyer, working diligently to find the most suitable yacht, negotiate the best deal, and guide the buyer through the purchasing process. If you are a buyer, a yacht broker will work closely with you to understand your preferences, requirements, and budget. They will leverage their extensive knowledge of the market to identify suitable yacht options, arrange showings, and guide you through the selection process. Once you’ve chosen a yacht, the broker will assist in negotiating the best price and favorable terms on your behalf, as well as handling the necessary paperwork and legal documentation.

On the other hand, a seller’s broker represents the seller, focusing on marketing the yacht effectively, attracting potential buyers, and negotiating favorable terms on behalf of the seller. If you are a seller, a yacht broker acts as your representative, aiming to secure the best possible deal for your yacht. They will conduct market research to determine a competitive asking price, create professional listings and marketing materials, and promote your yacht through various channels to attract potential buyers. Additionally, the broker will handle inquiries, qualify potential buyers, arrange showings, and negotiate with interested parties. Their goal is to facilitate a successful sale while minimizing your involvement and maximizing your proceeds.

In some cases, a yacht broker may act as a dual-agent, representing both the buyer and the seller in a transaction. However, it is essential to be aware that in dual agency situations, the broker must disclose this relationship to both parties and maintain transparency throughout the process.

What Exactly Does a Yacht Broker Do for a Buyer?

When you engage the services of a yacht broker as a buyer, you can expect them to fulfill several essential roles throughout the yacht purchasing process:

Assess the Client’s Needs and Preferences

A yacht broker will begin by thoroughly understanding your specific requirements, preferences, and budget. They will take the time to discuss your boating goals, desired features, and intended use of the yacht. This allows them to tailor their search and focus on finding yachts that align with your needs.

Conduct Market Research and Identify Suitable Yachts

With their extensive knowledge of the boating market, yacht brokers conduct comprehensive market research to identify suitable yacht options. They have access to a wide network of listings, both publicly available and exclusive, enabling them to present you with a range of yachts that meet your criteria.

Facilitate Yacht Showings and Surveys

Once potential yachts have been identified, the broker will coordinate yacht showings, providing you with the opportunity to view and assess the vessels of interest. They will accompany you during these visits, offering insights and answering any questions you may have. Although they can also arrange for a professional marine survey to ensure the vessel is in good condition, a buyer should remember that the surveyor he chooses works for him, the buyer, and is completely independent of the broker. It is best practice for the buyer to select the surveyor – the broker should be able to supply a full list of surveyors working in the area for you to choose from – and allow the broker to coordinate the arrangements for the pre-purchase survey itself.

Negotiate Prices and Terms

One of the key roles of a yacht broker is to negotiate on your behalf. They possess in-depth market knowledge and negotiation skills, allowing them to secure the best possible price and favorable terms for you. They will advocate for your interests throughout the negotiation process, ensuring you achieve the most advantageous outcome.

Assist with Paperwork and Legal Documentation

Yacht transactions involve a significant amount of paperwork and legal documentation. Your yacht broker will guide you through this process, ensuring that all necessary documents are completed accurately and efficiently. This includes contracts, registration, title transfer, and other relevant paperwork to finalise the purchase.

Provide Expert Advice and Guidance

A yacht broker is your trusted advisor throughout the buying process. They can provide valuable insights and expert advice, drawing on their extensive experience and knowledge of the boating industry. Whether it’s selecting the right yacht, evaluating pricing, or navigating complex legal aspects, your broker is there to support you every step of the way.

By performing these crucial tasks, a yacht broker acts as your advocate and partner, making the yacht buying process smoother, more efficient, and ultimately more rewarding. Their expertise and dedication help ensure that your yacht purchase aligns with your needs and preferences while providing peace of mind throughout the entire transaction.

What Does a Yacht Broker Do for a Seller?

When you enlist the services of a yacht broker as a seller, they take on various responsibilities to help you navigate the yacht selling process efficiently and effectively. Understanding the key tasks they perform on your behalf will highlight the value they bring to the table.

Prepare Sales Particulars and Photographs of the Vessel

A yacht broker will gather detailed information about your yacht, including its specifications, features, inventory and history. They will create compelling sales particulars highlighting the yacht’s strengths and appealing to potential buyers. Additionally, brokers will take high-quality photographs that showcase the vessel’s aesthetics and key selling points.

Conduct Market Research and Agree on a Suitable Listing Price

Yacht brokers have a deep understanding of the market and current trends. They will conduct market research to determine a competitive and realistic listing price for your yacht. By analysing similar yachts currently on the market, recent sales data, and other market indicators, they can guide you in setting an appropriate price that attracts potential buyers.

Yacht brokers take on the task of coordinating yacht showings and inspections with potential buyers. They arrange viewings at mutually convenient times, ensuring that interested parties have the opportunity to see your yacht firsthand. During these showings, the broker will present the vessel professionally and answer any questions that arise. They will also coordinate the pre-purchase survey to assess the yacht’s condition.

As experienced negotiators, yacht brokers are skilled at representing your interests during price and terms discussions. They will handle the negotiation process on your behalf, aiming to secure the best possible price and favorable conditions for the sale. Their market knowledge and expertise in negotiating can be instrumental in achieving an optimal outcome.

Manage Transfer of Payments

The management of escrow for the seller is not always within the direct scope of responsibilities for a yacht broker, however, many have access to an Escrow account as part of their activities and do undertake this role. Escrow services, which involve holding funds or documents in a secure account until specified conditions are met, are otherwise handled by a third-party escrow agent or a trusted closing lawyer.

In the yacht selling process, the buyer and seller may mutually agree to use an escrow account to hold the funds until the completion of certain conditions, such as the satisfactory completion of documentation and transfer of title. This helps ensure a secure and transparent transaction for both parties.

Yacht sales involve a considerable amount of paperwork and legal documentation. Your yacht broker will guide you through this process, ensuring that all necessary documents are completed accurately and in compliance with relevant regulations. They will handle contracts, transfer of ownership, title documentation, and other paperwork required to finalize the sale, ensuring a smooth and efficient transaction.

A yacht broker is your trusted advisor throughout the yacht-selling process. They provide expert guidance and insights based on their industry knowledge and experience. From preparing your yacht for sale to evaluating offers and strategizing marketing efforts, they offer valuable advice to help you make informed decisions at every stage.

By taking on these responsibilities, a yacht broker acts as your representative and advocate, streamlining the selling process and maximizing your chances of a successful sale. Their expertise, market insights, and professional network contribute to a smoother transaction, allowing you to focus on other things while entrusting the sale of your yacht to their capable hands.

Checking a Vessel’s Title

A yacht broker’s role includes checking the clear title and identifying any liens or secured loans associated with the vessel; however, the extent of their investigation may vary.

Yacht brokers typically conduct a preliminary check on the boat’s title and documentation during the listing process when they request relevant documents from the seller, such as the vessel’s registration, ownership history, and any recorded liens or encumbrances. They may also utilise online resources or databases to gather information about the boat’s title status.

While yacht brokers strive to ensure the accuracy of the information provided, it’s important to note that they may not conduct a comprehensive title search like a specialised maritime attorney or title company would. Their primary focus is on assisting with the transaction and ensuring a smooth process for the buyer and seller.

A yacht broker should encourage buyers to conduct their due diligence and seek professional assistance when necessary to ensure a clear title and mitigate any potential risks associated with the purchase.

If a potential buyer is concerned about the boat’s title and wants a thorough examination, it is advisable for them to seek the assistance of a maritime attorney or a title company that specialises in vessel documentation. These professionals have the expertise and resources to conduct a detailed search, examining public records, lien databases, and other relevant sources to determine the boat’s title status and identify any potential issues.

How Are They Paid?

Yacht brokers are typically paid through a commission-based structure. When a successful sale is made, the broker receives a percentage of the final sale price as their compensation – this is typically 8% in the UK and 10% elsewhere in the world.  The specific commission rate can vary depending on various factors, such as the size and value of the yacht, local market practices, and the agreement between the broker and the client.

This sum can be quite considerable, with a payday of $100,000 on the sale of a $1m vessel.

The commission rate is usually negotiated and agreed upon between the yacht broker and the boat owner (seller) before the listing is finalised. It is important for both parties to have a clear understanding of the commission structure and the associated terms.

In the case of a yacht sale, the seller is responsible for paying the commission to the broker. Upon the completion of the sale, the broker’s commission is deducted from the proceeds of the transaction. The remaining amount is then disbursed to the seller.

It’s worth noting that the commission is typically calculated based on the final sale price, including any additional costs or upgrades that may be negotiated as part of the sale; this may also be lower if adjustments to the price have been made following the pre-purchase survey.  The commission serves as the primary source of income for yacht brokers and is designed to align their interests with achieving the highest possible sale price for the seller.

It is important for both buyers and sellers to clarify the commission structure and any additional fees with the yacht broker upfront to avoid any misunderstandings or surprises during the transaction process.

Their guidance ensures that your yacht is competitively priced, attracting potential buyers while maximizing your chances of achieving a sale.

Yacht brokers take on the responsibility of screening potential buyers to ensure they are qualified and serious about the purchase and have the financial capability to complete the process. They have experience in discerning genuine buyers from casual inquiries, helping you avoid time-wasting or unreliable prospects.

Additionally, brokers assist in navigating the closing process, ensuring that all necessary paperwork and legal documentation are properly completed.

Qualities and Skills of an Effective Yacht Broker

To be an effective yacht broker, certain qualities and skills are essential for success in the industry. These attributes enable brokers to provide exceptional service and ensure a positive experience for both buyers and sellers.

Extensive knowledge of yachts and the yachting industry

Yacht brokers must possess comprehensive knowledge of different yacht types, brands, models, and their respective features. This includes understanding the technical aspects, performance capabilities, and maintenance requirements of various yachts. Staying updated with the latest industry and pricing trends , advancements, and regulations is crucial for providing accurate and up-to-date information to clients.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Effective communication is vital in building relationships with clients, understanding their needs, and articulating information clearly. Yacht brokers should be skilled communicators who can listen attentively, ask pertinent questions, and provide concise and relevant information. Interpersonal skills, including empathy, professionalism, and the ability to establish trust, are also essential for establishing rapport and fostering positive relationships with clients.

Excellent negotiation and sales abilities

Yacht brokers are responsible for negotiating prices, terms, and conditions on behalf of their clients. Possessing strong negotiation skills allows brokers to advocate for their clients’ interests effectively. A successful broker understands the dynamics of negotiation, employs persuasive techniques, and strives to achieve the best possible outcome for both parties involved. Additionally, having solid sales abilities helps brokers market yachts effectively, attract potential buyers, and close successful sales.

Attention to detail and organizational skills

Yacht transactions involve numerous details, documents, and deadlines. Yacht brokers must exhibit meticulous attention to detail to ensure accuracy in paperwork, contracts, and other essential documentation. They should possess strong organizational skills to manage multiple listings, client inquiries, and various aspects of the buying and selling process simultaneously. Being well-organized allows brokers to deliver a high level of service and ensure that nothing falls through the cracks during the transaction.

Trustworthiness and integrity

Trust is a fundamental aspect of the broker-client relationship. Yacht brokers must operate with the highest level of integrity and ethical standards. Clients rely on their brokers to act in their best interests, maintain confidentiality, and provide unbiased advice. Demonstrating trustworthiness and ethical conduct establishes long-term credibility and fosters strong relationships built on transparency and integrity.

By embodying these qualities and skills, an effective yacht broker can provide clients with exceptional service, professional guidance, and a positive experience throughout the yacht buying or selling process.

Challenges Faced by Yacht Brokers

The yachting industry is subject to market fluctuations influenced by economic conditions, global events, and trends. Yacht brokers need to adapt to these changes and stay updated on market dynamics to provide accurate advice and make informed decisions on behalf of their clients. They must navigate through both seller’s and buyer’s markets, adjusting strategies accordingly.

When supply is short, finding the exact yacht that meets all client requirements can be challenging, requiring extensive research, networking, and potentially longer search periods to identify suitable options.

Yacht brokers occasionally encounter demanding clients with high expectations or challenging personalities. Great brokers possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to navigate difficult negotiations while maintaining professionalism and a focus on achieving mutually beneficial outcomes. They strive to manage client expectations, mediate conflicts and ensure a positive experience for all parties involved.

Yacht brokers typically earn their income through commissions based on the final sale price of a yacht. While this incentivises brokers to negotiate the highest possible sale price, it may also create potential conflicts of interest. Some buyers may be concerned that brokers could prioritise higher commissions over their best interests. It is important for clients to communicate their expectations and ensure transparency with their broker openly.

Finding the Best Yacht Broker for Your Needs

Not all brokers have equal expertise or experience; the yacht brokerage industry comprises professionals with varying levels of expertise and experience. Not all brokers possess the same depth of knowledge or extensive networks. It is essential for clients to carefully select a reputable and experienced yacht broker who understands their specific needs, has a strong track record, and can provide the desired level of service.

Word of mouth is the best recommendation.

Disadvantages of Using a Yacht Broker

While utilizing the services of a yacht broker offers numerous benefits, it is important to consider potential drawbacks and limitations associated with relying on a broker.

Commission Fees

Yacht brokers typically earn their income through a quite substantial commission based on the sale price of the yacht. This commission is a percentage of the final sale price and is paid by the seller. Buyers may find that this commission is factored into the overall price, potentially resulting in higher prices. Similarly, sellers should be aware that the commission reduces their net proceeds from the sale. It is important for both buyers and sellers to consider the financial implications and evaluate the value provided by the broker’s services.

Limited Control Over & Lack of Involvement in the Buying or Selling Process

Relying on a yacht broker means relinquishing some degree of control over the buying or selling process. Brokers are responsible for making decisions on behalf of their clients, such as negotiating terms and handling paperwork. While brokers strive to act in the best interests of their clients, there may be instances where clients would have preferred more involvement or different approaches. Clear communication and setting expectations can help address concerns regarding control and ensure a collaborative working relationship with the broker.

Potential Conflicts of Interest

As commission-based professionals, yacht brokers may face potential conflicts of interest. While brokers aim to prioritize their clients’ best interests, there is a possibility that their own financial gain could influence decision-making. Clients should openly communicate their expectations, including any specific concerns related to conflicts of interest, to ensure transparency and maintain trust throughout the process.

It is worth clarifying that while these potential drawbacks exist, they may not be applicable or significant in every situation. The value of a yacht broker’s services should be assessed based on individual circumstances, including the complexity of the transaction, personal expertise, time constraints, and comfort level with the yacht buying or selling process. Each buyer or seller must evaluate their specific needs to make an informed decision about whether to engage a yacht broker.

A good yacht broker can save you a LOT of time and effort in buying or selling a boat, but there can be a high price to pay in the form of commission on the selling price. In the end, whether to engage a yacht broker or not depends on your personal circumstances, preferences, and level of comfort with the yacht buying or selling process.

With such high sums at stake on a single transaction, it’s easy to see that lower-value vessels might have less attention than expensive ones; check the inventory of your local brokers and choose accordingly.

Andros Island is a mecca for world-class, salt-water bonefishing, while Berry Islands will satisfy the hunger to hook a flying blue marlin. Whether looking for mobile private island isolation or a week of watersports action, The Bahamas ’ balmy shallow waters and state-of-the-art marinas have it all.

The Bahamas has 700 islands and once past immigration, they're all yours to explore

Enjoy the sunshine and sea breezes

Enjoying a Caribbean climate, calm trade winds and a well-developed yachting infrastructure, the 700 islands and cays that make up The Bahamas are a must-visit by boat. The popular option of bareboating makes spontaneous daytrips on the water a reality, but to immerse in the experience fully, a superyacht charter is where it’s at. Pink sandy beaches elevate an already stunning location to memorable status, as do wild swimming pigs, championship golf courses and the allure of diving with sharks.

Shallow sheltered waters and myriad islands make this destination a yachting nirvana

Indulge in culinary delights

The culinary delights of The Bahamas are a sensory journey that blends Caribbean flavours with international influences. The archipelago's cuisine is rich with fresh seafood, tropical fruits and spices, offering dishes that are both vibrant and savoury. The Bahamian specialities such as conch salad, cracked conch and rock lobster are a must-try, prepared with locally sourced ingredients reflecting the islands' maritime heritage.

The Bahamas also offers an array of dining experiences, from casual beachside shacks to upscale restaurants helmed by world-class chefs. In Nassau and Paradise Island, gourmet dining establishments serve an eclectic mix of traditional Bahamian and contemporary fusion cuisine. With its rich culinary landscape, The Bahamas invites food lovers to explore and indulge in its unique and delicious gastronomic offerings.

Unbeatable locations to discover yachting in The Bahamas

The Allan's Cay iguana is critically endangered, with a population of just 1,000 on three Bahamian islands

Situated within the Lucayan Archipelago of the West Indies in the Atlantic, The Bahamas’ exotic location has many top-drawer tourist attractions. Anchorages in Exuma Cays Park are gateways to kaleidoscopic marine wildlife. Feed the endangered Bahamian iguanas or catch a glimpse of the elusive hutia (the islands’ native rodent). The brave should snorkel or dive the country’s famed blue holes, where pastel-hued turquoise turns into navy as the bottom of the ocean appears to fall away. On Long Island, located a few metres from the 80-mile shoreline, the 663-foot blue hole is thought to be the deepest in the world.

The 202m-deep Dean's Blue Hole is reputed to be the world's deepest

Swim with the pigs in Big Major Cay

The famous swimming pigs of Big Major Cay in the Exumas

Swimming with wild pigs in The Bahamas is a rite of passage. Pig Beach near Big Major Cay in The Exumas is famed for its friendly furry hogs that live their days out on the isolated islet. It’s thought the first colony arrived in the 1990s, though exactly how remains unconfirmed. Now firmly established as permanent residents they serve as a year-round tourist attraction. Adept at swimming, the wild animals love to swim out to greet arriving boats, looking for a snack straight from the galley. Not only a memorable photo opportunity, it’s a bucket list activity that can’t be ticked off anywhere else in the world.

These cute pigs are a major lure for families

Visit Big Farmer's Cay Sandbar

This beautiful stretch of virgin sand that emerges at low tide is also known as the mile-long sandbar

Undeniably one of the best beaches in The Bahamas, Big Farmer's Cay Sandbar has everything you could dream of for a beach. Gently lapping waves from the warm, shallow sea merge with a mile-long sandbar made up of powder soft sand the colour of pristine porcelain. But you’ll have to time it right, for this slice of heaven located just south of the Cay only emerges at low tide. Accessible by boat, it’s a firm favourite for shelling, sunbathing or picnicking superyacht-style; barbecued conch pulled straight from the Atlantic enjoyed to a soundtrack of popping Champagne corks.

Set up and stay for the day - or at least until the tide comes back in

Go diving on Tiger Beach

Diving with tiger sharks like these is an incredible sensation, but so is diving with harmless nurse sharks

Bahamas shark diving is not for the faint hearted. But those who dare will be richly rewarded. Tiger Beach on Grand Bahama has earned its name from being home to the beautiful yet predatory tiger shark. Identified by tiger stripes along its flank, they can grow up to 5m (16.5ft) but are now considered an endangered species. They’re not the only species of shark to accumulate here, and certified scuba divers can, along with trained dive guides, can expect to get up close and personal with Caribbean reef sharks, lemon sharks, hammerheads and bull sharks, to name a few. For something a little less deadly, swimming with dolphins is a magical experience. The ambient waters off the Bimini coast offer up encounters with the Atlantic spotted dolphin and the bottlenose

Swimming with dolphins is instantly euphoric

Visit Harbour Island's Pink Beaches

The instantly recognisable pink sands on the east coast of Harbour Island

The pink sand beaches in The Bahamas are a picture-postcard reminder of just how stunning this charter destination is. Pink Sand Beach on Harbour Island is one of the most vibrant of them all, with a rich rose hue reflecting under the rays of the sun, contrasting brilliantly with the dazzling turquoise sea. Formed from the shell of microscopic coral insects, it paints a beautiful natural vista as far as the eye can see. By boat is the best way to get to pink sand beaches, either dropping anchor further out to sea and riding in by tender or heading to Harbour Islands’ dock located a convenient five minutes away. Top the experience off in style by dining under the stars at the celebrated restaurant at Rock House.

Andros Barrier Reef is a protected national park and home to a huge variety of widlife

The 190-mile long Andros Barrier Reef is the world's third largest barrier reef and the third largest living organism on the planet. Awash with uninhabited cays, the area is rich in marine life and a pristine centre for eco-tourism. Turtles and birds flourish here and crowds are sparse, despite it being home to some of the most stunning beaches in The Bahamas. Private lounging under the warm summer sun is the order of the day. For the active and adventurous, the reef is another must-dive, dropping to around 2.5m (8ft) on the island side and 1,800m (6,000ft) in the Tongue of the Ocean where vibrant coral wait to be discovered.

Discover Atlantis in Nassau

Atlantis resort on Paradise island has hotels, restaurants, spas and casinos

The Atlantis in Nassau is an experience not to be missed. Located on Paradise Island, the lush, oceanside resort more than lives up to its name. With no less than six separate Atlantis resorts offering services, amenities and aquaventure, a stay at this luxurious resort is akin to stepping foot in the lost city of Atlantis itself. Dive deep into Bahamian culture by sampling rejuvenating treatments at its choice of spas. Snorkel from the shore of one of its many private beaches. Take an underwater adventure or simply sit back and drink in the beauty of the land.

Living On A Boat: Guide To Choosing The Right Live Aboard

By Robert Bowman | Posted On Jun 24, 2024 Updated On Jun 25, 2024

The appeal of living aboard a boat has grown considerably over the last few years as the cost of owning a traditional home has increased substantially with interest rates. With everything from politics to consumer confidence creating additional pressure on everyone, setting course for the open ocean has never sounded more tempting.

One only has to look on Youtube to see the growing number of liveaboard content creators documenting the highs and lows of boat life, some of which have reached millions of views. Like anything in life, there will be pros and cons to living on board a boat, but whether or not it becomes worth the effort depends on many factors, none of which are more important than the boat you choose. Careful planning, research, a realistic budget, and the help of a professional yacht broker during the process of buying your liveaboard boat can greatly improve your chances of a successful experience.

Below are the different sections of our Liveaboard Boat Guide. Tap or click any one to move down to that section.

DEFINING YOUR DREAM OF LIVING ABOARD

The liveaboard dream usually starts big as you envision yourself anchored at a secluded Bahamian island, catching fish off of the transom that you'll filet and eat this evening, as you stargaze at the most unpolluted sky you've ever seen. In reality, there are marina slips to reserve, weather to watch, supplies to monitor, and other unforeseen circumstances that will arise. It's important to be diligent in your research and planning in order to succeed.

Before you get in to choosing your boat and gathering supplies, sit down and think about the relative locations you want to visit while living aboard. For some, this is a 2-3 year plan where the goal is to complete The Great Loop and spend the winters down in the islands before selling the boat and returning to the real world. For others, a sailboat at a liveaboard marina in the Florida Keys sounds like the perfect retirement plan. Before you get going on the perfect liveaboard boat, figure out the following:

  • What location do you see yourself living in?
  • Pick a start date and location that coincides with good weather.
  • Are you planning on living at a marina or anchoring off?
  • Have you researched the local regulations to see if anchoring overnight is allowed?
  • How long do you plan to stay in this area before moving on?
  • Will you generally be cruising near the coast or do you need offshore capability?

Understanding your cruising goals, along with fuel needs, fresh water capacity, generator size, and other needed amenities, can help you back into both the right type of boat you need to be successful and the beginnings of a potential budget.

(Below: Some marinas, like Mangrove Marina in the Florida Keys, offer long-term liveaboard options.)

WHAT TYPES OF BOATS CAN YOU LIVE ON?

Traditionally there are several types of boats that liveaboard owners seem to learn towards when choosing the right vessel for their needs. Many of these types of liveaboard boats consist of the same characteristics, including being fuel efficient, but there are big differences at both ends of the spectrum. Large long-distance cruising yachts can cost millions of dollars and sustain living on board at sea for weeks at a time, while on the other end of the spectrum some sailboat owners have less than $25,000 invested. Understanding your boat budget and the ongoing costs can help dictate what type of liveaboard you need. Below are some examples of popular liveaboard boats:

  • Aft Cabin Boats
  • Cruising Boats
  • Downeast Boats
  • Expedition Yachts
  • Pilothouse Boats
  • Power Catamarans
  • Sailing Catamarans
  • Trawler Yachts

Boat shows are an excellent place to step foot on board different types of boats for research. Which boats will have enough room for you? Which type of vessel is going to be easiest for you to manage? The Fort Lauderdale Boat Show is a great resource as almost every manufacturer is on display.

(Below: This Nordic Tugs 39 " PHYLLIS D " would make an excellent liveaboard for the right couple.)

WHAT SIZE BOAT DO YOU NEED TO LIVE ON?

Are there people out there that live on 18-foot sailboats and sail around the country? Yes, there are. Do you really want to live like that for months at a time? The answer is probably no. If you're serious about being a liveaboard boat owner, there is likely a minimum size you will need to comfortably live during your travels. There is also likely a size that becomes too large to either dock at a marina or efficiently manage within your budget.

Captain Jeff Palmer , President of United Yacht Sales, has been around boats all of his life, been a captain of some of the most prestigious charter yachts on the water, and helped his own clients into their perfect boat. "My opinion is that the perfect sized liveaboard boat for a couple is between 35 and 45-feet," said Jeff. "That's going to give you enough interior space and enough storage, but is still going to be easy to manage."

"But size is only one factor to consider," he continued. "You also need to make sure you have a plan for food storage, supplies, a generator that supplies enough power, fuel capacity, and a lot more to consider. This is where hiring a knowledgeable yacht broker can really help streamline the entire process for you."

WHAT ARE THE TOP LIVEABOARD BOAT BRANDS?

Once you've determined the appropriate type and size of liveaboard boat you want for your adventure, it's time to narrow the search to a specific boat. Understanding the history, reputation, and availability of specific manufacturers and their models can help you determine the appropriate path for you, and your broker, to pursue. Research is paramount at this stage of your selection process and should include ample time spent on Youtube, inquiring with other owners on social media, and having numerous conversations with your yacht broker about your evolving needs.

Below are several examples of some of the top boat builders that design liveaboard models:

  • Aquila Boats (Power Catamaran)
  • Beneteau Boats (Both Sail & Trawlers)
  • Fountaine Pajot (Sailing Catamarans)
  • Grand Banks (Trawlers & Motor Yachts)
  • Hampton Endurance Yachts (Long-Distance Motor Yachts)
  • Hanse Yachts (Sailboats)
  • Kadey-Krogen (Trawlers & Cruising Yachts)
  • Nordhavn Yachts (Trawlers & Cruising Yachts)
  • Outer Reef Yachts (Long-Distance Cruising Yachts)
  • Sabre Yachts (Downeast)
  • Tartan Yachts (Sailboats)

There are many opportunities for both sail and power boats on the brokerage market. You can also utilize the relationship with your yacht broker as your advisor if you decide to custom build a brand new liveaboard boat.

(Below: On the high-end luxury side, a Horizon power catamaran is hard to beat in terms of livability.)

CAN YOU ANCHOR ANYWHERE YOU WANT ON A LIVEABOARD BOAT?

While the dream of having the freedom to live wherever you want on the water is the origin of your desires to own a liveaboard, the reality is that most cities have some regulations on where boats can legally anchor overnight. For example, new regulations passed in Broward County, Florida limit boat owners from anchoring more than 45 days in either the North or South Lake. In other words, every county within each state may have different regulations and laws you must abide by. "As of July 2021 the State of Florida enacted a law that allows municipal governments and counties to manage anchorages," said a statement in the Waterway Guide. "These new measures also provide guidance on the definitions of derelict vessels, use of unpermitted moorings and proof of pump-out when anchored for 10 days or longer in permitted mooring fields or No-Discharge Zones."

Another good resource to determine where you can anchor is the Active Captain tool by Garmin. This is a large community of boaters who can share their experiences and advice about anchorages. The site currently claims to have map way points to nearly 14,500 anchorages.

(Below: A screenshot of the Fort Lauderdale area on Active Captain showing where to anchor. Look for the green anchors!)

WHAT IS THE ACTUAL COST OF LIVING ON A BOAT?

Boaters that desire to live on board can make the cost of living less expensive than a more traditional home and life on land. By planning ahead, being strategic, and making some sacrifices, it certainly can be cheaper to live on a boat. If you're considering purchasing a liveaboard boat and want to make the leap to full-time living on the water, consider these factors when creating your budget:

  • Fuel - Needed for both moving to a new location and for any generator on board (Solar panels can help!)
  • Boat Insurance - Expect to pay between $500 - $1,000 per month, especially in Florida.
  • Marina Slip Fees - Do you plan on taking advantage of the amenities (shower, laundry) at the marina?
  • Boat Repair - Things are going to happen, it's smart to be ready with a special fund for boat repairs.
  • Lifestyle - Are you going to want to hang out at the awesome bar & grill right on the beach, next to the marina? We think so.
  • Health Insurance - Don't forget to keep this active! Those marina piling barnacles can be sharp!
  • Other - Groceries, phone bill, wifi, and more. Just like living on land, there are luxuries you may not want to give up.

Can you live on a boat for free? Probably not and still be very comfortable. There are limits on how long you can anchor overnight, as mentioned above, so constantly moving locations and under sail, would be necessary.

NoTextingAndTacking.com put together a pie chart (below) on how they live on a $4,000/month budget while on board their boat.

pie chart costs of living on board your boat

HOW DO YOU MAKE MONEY WHILE LIVING ON A BOAT?

Unless you are independently wealthy or have a source of income that doesn't require you to be landlocked, there may come a time during your liveaboard experience that requires you to earn an income. Living on a boat can become expensive, particularly if you desire a certain lifestyle. In a recent poll on a Reddit boating group, a user asked what everyone did for money while living on board their boat. Here were some of the responses:

  • TooCool1953: "Teaching English as a second language remotely."
  • AJRando: "I do software development, modeling, and simulation."
  • WhyRumAlwaysGone: "Marine electrician/Captain about 50/50."
  • Witch_Wild: "Vlogging and freelance coding"

If you're good at social media, content about living on a boat does very well. While actual numbers online vary, Youtube is said to pay out between $5-$15 for every 1,000 views of a video. To put this into perspective, the video on this article has 230,000 views which at an average of $10 per 1,000 views means this video earned a total of $2,300 before taxes.

(Below: Many boaters are now turning to Starlink for WiFi while on board. This is a topic of concern among liveaboard owners who need to earn an income.)

WHAT ARE THE NEXT STEPS TO LIVING ON A BOAT?

If after considering all of the changes that must be made to switch from land life to boat life you still want to proceed, there are many things you can do simultaneously to get started.

  • Determine where you want to begin your adventure and when.
  • Start downsizing your life. There is only so much room on a 35-to-45 foot boat.
  • Start collecting spare boat parts. While being a liveaboard boater, you're going to want two of everything.
  • If you can, pay for a temporary slip so that you can methodically begin to move in before making the complete switch.
  • Order a few liveaboard books off of Amazon like, The Essential Guide To Living On A Yacht
  • Before you set off to your new location, have a survey done on your boat to spot any potential mechanical issues.

If you have yet to buy your liveaboard boat, or need assistance with selling your current boat, feel free to contact us today at (772) 463-3131 or by email at [email protected] . We would be more than happy to connect you with an expert, professional yacht broker that specializes in the type of boat you're purchasing or selling.

99m iconic Hollywood motor yacht Christina O newly listed on brokerage market

The iconic 99.1-metre motor yacht Christina O has joined the open market for the first time with Tim Morley of Morley Yachts .

Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Maria Callas, Richard Burton, John Wayne, Winston Churchill and John F. Kennedy are some of the names that have walked on her decks or sat at her bar – the latter built from the wood of a sunken Spanish galleon ship.

Christina O was originally delivered by Canadian Vickers in 1943 as an anti-submarine vessel and served in the D-Day landings in Normandy, France. Naval architecture is by Professor Cãsar Pinnau and Howaldtswerke while exterior design is by Costas Carabelas . Her most recent refit was in 2022.

The superyacht was converted by Greek shipowner Aristotle Onassis, the second husband of Jackie Kennedy. Onassis bought her at scrap value and then spent $4,000,000 on her rebuild; approximately $50 million in today’s terms. Her original interior is by Apostolos Molindris .

Recent beneficial owners include John Paul Papanicolaou, who spent some $50,000,000 restoring her, then a syndicate of Irish businessmen, set up by the late Ivor Fitzpatrick, who invested substantially in a comprehensive refit before putting her on the charter market .

Two of her most talked-about features over the decades are a mosaic-tiled, saltwater swimming pool that converts to a dance floor and the whale foreskin-upholstered bar stools which surround Christina O 's rope-covered bar, colloquially termed Ari's Bar. The footrests are made of whale teeth, which also line the circumference of the bar as a convenient place to hang a handbag.

Christina O accommodates a large party of 34 guests in 17 cabins, refurbished in similar décor to that originally selected by Jackie Onassis. Her rich interior still contains the Steinway piano that Frank Sinatra and Maria Callas used while visiting, while the Onassis suite boasts an onyx fireplace and Baccarat crystal lighting. The yacht's glamorous circular staircase also has a vintage onyx and silver handrail.

There are quarters for up to 39 crew, though the broker pointed out that she can make coastal cruises with up to 157 guests on board.

A total of 5,500hp is provided by twin MAN diesels, giving Christina O a cruising speed of 15 knots and top speed of 19 knots. The 1802GT yacht for sale has an impressive range of 12,000 nautical miles at 10 knots. Her inventory includes two Hacker Craft Prestige varnished tenders, taking eight guests each.

Lying in Nice, France, Christina O is asking €90,000,000.

Following successful events in 2024, the GYA and MYBA have announced collaborative dates for their next editions in 2025, with MYBA 2025 scheduled for 28 April - 1 May, and the Mediterranean Yacht Show (MEDYS) 2025 from 3 - 7 May.

Each hosting celebratory editions, with MYBA on its 35th show and MEDYS on its 10th, organizers have been working together to allow industry professionals and brokers to attend both shows easily. The trade-only events will now proceed to make further arrangements in regard to locations and attending Mediterranean charter yachts .

As trade-only events these shows are not open to the general public, however, arrangements can be made for brokers to attend on your behalf to inspect the displaying superyacht charters and obtain information from relative Captains and crew.
