newport sailboats review

newport 27 368

Success came quickly to Capital Yachts of Harbor City, California, when it debuted the Newport 27 in 1971. The boat, designed by George Cuthbertson and George Cassian, the founders of C&C Yachts, quickly established itself on the local racing scene. The 27 was in production for about 15 years.

For a 27-footer, the boat has an unusually commodious interior. Standing headroom is just over 6 feet, and the most common interior layout features a V-berth, a head, and a small hanging locker forward of the main bulkhead. Settees measuring 6 feet in length run along either side of the saloon. Two people can sit comfortably on each settee at the table, which can be folded up flush with the bulkhead when not in use; under way, this surface serves as a nav station.

Aft of the settees, a small counter to port contains a sink and icebox access. Opposite is another counter with a recessed two-burner alcohol stove. Variations on this layout include a starboard quarter berth, a fixed dinette with raised seating fore and aft, and an aft-placed head. Regardless of the layout, oiled teak was used liberally, its warm traditional aesthetic spoiled somewhat by the adjacent wood-patterned Formica that covers all horizontal surfaces.

Construction is typical for the era and the price point. The hull is hand laid, and the keel is lead. All through-hulls are bronze, but they’re fitted with PVC gate valves. Dry storage seems endless, but tankage is inadequate for longer than a weekend cruise; the holding tank is only 6 gallons.

Tiller steering is standard, and the underbody features a fin keel and a balanced spade rudder. Early models draw a modest 4 foot 3 inches; the Mark II models have 5-foot-2-inch draft for improved upwind performance. Displacing 6,000 pounds, either version scoots along in light air, but both are tender. As wind and boat speeds increase, so does weather helm. On my boat, a Mark II, an Autohelm 1000 tillerpilot could only manage so much weather helm, and I often reduced sail earlier than I might have otherwise done.

The traveler is forward of the companionway. Friction between the traveler and its track makes it difficult and dangerous to adjust it if the mainsheet is under any significant load. Installing a modern traveler should join replacing the PVC through-hull valves at the top of any improvements list.

Most Newport 27s came with an inboard auxiliary, either a gasoline-powered Atomic 4 or, later, an 11-horsepower Universal diesel. Access to the engine on either inboard version is excellent.

Used Newport 27s list between $10,000 and $18,000, depending on condition and the upgrades made. While not a stout offshore cruiser and no longer a competitive racer, the Newport 27 is still a capable, inexpensive daysailer that, when upgraded and outfitted accordingly, can deliver modest coastal cruising to a couple or a singlehander.

Michael Robertson and his wife sailed their Newport 27, Del Viento, from Ventura, California, to Florida via most of Central America. That was in 1996 and 1997. They plan to go cruising again soon, with their two young daughters.

I'm considering buying a NewPort 30

I sailed a lot when I was younger. Haven't sailed much since the 90s. But my wife and I want to spend a couple years sailing the Caribbean. We've saved up about $20k for a boat and we talked to a real estate agent yesterday about putting our house on the market. Anyway, it's a 1982 Newport. The gentleman we would buy the boat from bought it almost 4 months ago. Then covid happened, shelter in place, lost his job and needs to sell it. He showed me the bill of sale and her bought it for $6I more then he's asking because he just doesn't want to deal with it. He got a survey when he bought it and it looks good. He also got a separate engine inspection and the mechanic found a pin hole leak on the heat exchanger but said, other than that, the engine is in great shape. I'm wondering if this would be a good boat to sail down the coast of California, across Panama and around the Caribbean. I should also note that my wife and I have already signed up for the first 3 ASA classes and we're just waiting for the place to reopen after covid. Also, is there anything we should look at, specific to newports?

Well not sure if there is a specific question. Newport’s are a good boat. If you and your wife can get along in 300-400 sq ft then you have the makings of a great adventure. Selling everything, buying a boat, and going out on the open sea sounds like a terrific beginning to adventure. There is a lot to consider. Not the least is how are you going to navigate through the Panama Canal. Another possibility is to participate in a Caribbean charter to get a feel of cruising. Good luck.

I've heard the Canal is closed to pleasure craft right now. Of course, you won't be there very soon but it's something to keep focused on. Find out if the rigging is older than 10 years. That's something I'd be concerned about in terms of going offshore. A pinhole in the exhaust is an easy fix.

Hillbillybuddha said: Oh, no. He's asking less than $9k. Which would leave us enough to update a few things. Autopilot, maybe a/c, update the fridge, etc. And normally I wouldn't except a seller's survey (and I probably shouldn't here) but it is the survey from when he bought the boat a few months ago. The fact that he wasn't a seller when he got the survey makes me a little more inclined to trust it, but I'll probably get one anyway. Since I want to haul it out and paint the bottom (it was done 18 months ago and survey said the antifouling looked to be in good shape) I just don't want to have to think of painting the bottom while I'm enjoying the Caribbean. The survey also suggested changing 2 of the seacocks on the thru hulls. Click to expand

Universal diesel 5416 2 cylinder. Recently had new filters and fluids, the raw water / fresh water pump was replaced and the Hurth marine gear fluid was recently changed. But the survey said that the engine mount bolts were loose so the engine should be checked to see if it's inline and true and then have the bolts tightened.

There was a Newport 30 on the hard in a boatyard I frequented. I always liked the hull shape. In particular the forefoot was vee shaped and I always thought that would make an easy motion in waves. I think the interior has the engine in the cabin a little offset from centerline. Also, I think the propeller and shaft are offset too. I wondered how this would effect steerage under power. Otherwise it's a boat of the 70's not really designed for live aboard. It has a bit of a cramped interior and not the kind or storage you would want for a long cruise. There are 3 versions of this boat - all designed by Gary Mull - which are similar. Gary Mull was a great designer whose designs included my beloved Ranger 29, the venerable Ranger 23, the PHRF beater Ranger 26 and many others. The Newport 30-3 looks to be the most cruise friendly version.

there are to concepts for cruising on a sailboat: campers and condos (my terms) most sailors today want modern condos. push button everything. computers and battery banks and electronic everywhere. all very expensive and hard to keep in a salty environment. i sail camper style myself. more sailing, less fixing for me. you do need camping skills which i have and enjoy. in 1969 the average length vessel for world sailing cruisers was 29'. not today. no room for the condo gear. most sailors today want the vessel to sail it self while they ride. i am very old school by choice. my crew and i do the camping work and sail the vessel manually. i think sailing is way more fun than riding. that is my choice. not many agree to sail manually like i do. if you like a camping life style. that 30 ft boat will be great for two. i prefer the camping style for cruising on a sailboat. my old alden is a camper. i sail with a big crew and we do everything manually. life is choices. 30' is a great size for two camper style sailors. send back pictures please, jon

I personally doubt that you will much enjoy sailing west to east in the Caribbean on a beamy, 30-ft boat built for the Newport to Catalina run across a 26 n.mi. channel. Boats sailing the Caribbean these days tend to be nearer 40 ft, often larger. The trip you are contemplating requires gear, even if “harbor hopping.” So, your camper’s tent will likely be full of “stuff.” As far as sailing down the CA coast, it depends on where you are starting and when you will leave, as well as on your experience, as to its practicality; unless, perhaps, your wish is only to blow down from where ever you are straight to San Diego, which requires overnighting, and thus watch standing. Does the boat have two sets of adequate ground tackle, a windlass, dinghy & outboard, solar panels (to power your fridge), radar, Bimini, dodger, chart table/nav station, etc? A friend of mine bought one of those vintage Newport models to travel up the CA coast from Long Beach. Got as far as Santa Barbara on the second try, then back home. Traded it up for a Catalina 34. The ASA series can prepare you for local sailing and short-distance cruising. But you should, IMHO, have a couple of years worth (say, 40 trips each year of one to three nights each trip, average) of hands-on experience with short-distance cruising and anchoring before making the trip you describe. That way you’ll better understand what you are asking of yourselves. Also, I think you will find difficulty getting insurance to sail south of Turtle Bay in Baja California anytime before November 1st. The folks I know who the have done the west coast-Panama-Caribbean trip and who ended up in FL or elsewhere in the GOM did so on 38 to 40-ft boats: Cascade 38 & Gulfstar 38 (couples) & Irwin 40 (two guys) and all had extensive sailing experience.

A Rawson 30 is a full-keel boat of 12,000# displacement, 9-ft beam. Your Newport 30 is a fin keel of 8,000# displacement, > 10.5 ft beam. On the surface of it, the R30 is a much more sea-capable vessel. A boat’s length is not the only consideration. But, if you’ve done all of this once before, why the need for ASA courses? You’re talking several hundred $$ for the both of you.

Derived from C&C's Redline 41, this design had a long and successful production run. It lacks some of the amenities of 'full-volume'modern boats belowdecks, but is a tough, fast, seakindly boat offshore.

newport sailboats review

Sailors over the years have invested large sums and enlisted eminent designers in search of the “dual-purpose boat,” that rare craft that rewards her owner equally with racing performance and cruising capabilities. Season after season the major builders snatch up the rights to prize-winners, conduct focus groups, and expend marketing dollars on racer/cruisers, and cruiser/racers, in hopes of making the twain of racing and cruising meet. When we checked with owners of the venerable Newport 41, we found her to be not only a widely traveled cruiser but a boat that, though designed in the ’60s, can still gather some silver on the PHRF and Beer Can circuits.

The surprise didn’t last long; the Newport 41 began life from the parent molds of the Redline 41 from Cuthbert & Cassian. In its heyday, C & C was one of the sport’s foremost builders of production racing boats. When she was designed in 1967, the Redline was queen of that C & C stable. Today’s boats have gotten longer on the waterline, shorter in the ends, wider in the beam, and flatter on the bottom. Fashion, technology, and function have all made them that way. So, too, have the rules under which they race. The N-41 is a good yardstick to measure the distance that boats have come.

Newport 41

The Redline 41 was designed to the CCA Rule. (CCA stands for the Cruising Club of America. For a quick description of what that rule was intended to foster, see the PS Advisor in the June double issue of this year.) Those salts who were around at the time (and even some who have come along since) tend to romanticize that rating system as “open” in terms of the types of boat that it encouraged. It was criticized for rewarding beamy centerboarders like three-time Newport-Bermuda winner Finisterre, and even the good old days had their bad old rulebeaters… but today CCA boats are generally regarded as “healthy” boats. They were markedly heavier than the boats (IMS, IOR, et. al.) that have come since. They had narrow hull forms with smoother sectional shapes. The philosophy of “if it doesn’t break, it’s too heavy,” prevalent in today’s engineering of performance boats, had yet to take hold.

As the Redline 41, the boat was at the top of the heap in her day. Then C & C recouped its investment in her (making room at the top for the C & C 61) and sold the tooling to Enterprise Yachts of Santa Ana, CA. Their version of the boat was something of an “all things to all people” creation. Their ad copy emphasized that she had “several major series wins to her credit,” but went on to describe how she sleeps seven in comfort and luxury and is distinguished by an interior offering sumptuous standards of finish and function. And back then, in 1970, the complete boat sold for $29,995!

But Enterprise didn’t sell enough of them to make a go of it, and the molds for the 41 passed to Capital Yachts, Inc., an operation in Harbor City, CA, started by Bay area builder/sailor Jon Williams in late 1972. Capital added several inches of freeboard to the hull and put a greater accent on wood below, but the Newport 41 (as they introduced her) was still very much a boat that you could race, particularly offshore. With Capital’s additions, and time, by 1983 a nicely equipped boat cost $85,000.

For the next 14 years Capital turned out roughly a boat a month. This early racer/cruiser formed the backbone of a line that included several smaller boats. She continued to be built right up until 1993, when Capital closed its doors.

Design C & C produced a startling variety of race-pointed designs over its three decades in business, but one hallmark of them all was minimum wetted surface. From easily driven swept-back keels through semicircular sectional shapes, smooth waterlines, and sweetly harmonized buttocks, the C & C hull shape was drawn to make a minimum of fuss as it passed through the water. Though decidedly heavier than the boats of today, and carrying a smaller, less efficient sailplan, the Newport 41 still has excellent “manners” because she’s so easily driven.

A key factor in that performance is her narrow 11’3″ beam (another design element that makes her easier to sail than some of her broader-beamed rivals). The hull is somewhat veed forward (owners report dry decks in seas up to three feet), regular and relatively tubular through the midsections, and tucked up slightly at the counter. The beam, however, is carried well aft for sail- carrying power and to provide an antidote to pitching. After 15 degrees of heel the counter adds a foot or more of waterline length and boosts the boat’s top-end speed potential. Sail carrying power also comes from full stern sections which explains why the boat’s best point competitively has been off the wind.

The Newport 41 is stiff. She tends to lie down onto her sailing lines and stay there. Credit that to her 8,215 pounds of ballast. That’s a lot of weight to be lugging. Some modern 40-footers don’t weigh that much altogether.

Toting all of that lead weight definitely limits the 41’s speed potential, especially with only 750 sq. ft. of rated sail area. The weight does some good things, too, though. The boat’s motion in a seaway is “old fashioned” and “substantial.” She doesn’t let the waves push her around. And she stands churchlike until the breeze gets near 20 apparent, without the need for a reef.

Accommodations Expectations were different for offshore racers when the Newport 41 was born. It was thought that heads would have doors, that pipe racks belonged in outlet stores, and that a boat should offer sailors something solid to keep them safe from wind and wave.

Consequently, the N-41 is far from stripped out. Her cockpit is a good example of the thinking that went into offshore racers of her vintage. It’s big enough, the well is deep enough, and the functions are spread enough so that five or even six can race the boat with efficiency and space. On the other hand, the benches are long enough (67″) to rest on, if not stretch out. The helmsman’s area is separate enough to allow concentration, yet big enough for comfort.

One of the most unusual aspects of the boat’s interior is her offset engine. To reduce pitching (and to create a mega-locker in the space beneath the companionway) the inboard (originally gas but later standardized as a 35-hp. diesel) is tucked beneath the galley counter on the port side. This necessitates an off-center prop (whose drag would be lessened if it had some deadwood to hide behind) but it opens up that space below the shallow (three-step) companionway stairs. “I’ve got room for two inflatables in there, and maybe a few outboard motors, too,” brags one owner. Most owners rate the engine installation “better than average” for access and some have experimented with folding or feathering props to reduce the drag. Gains of 0.4 to 0.9 knots are reported.

Newport 41

Some owners rate their interiors “Chevrolet” for interior aesthetics. Others like what they have better than modern boats from the lower half of the price range. Several report that varnishing the teak below has brightened things up a lot. While the matched-grain precision of some of the high-priced boats isn’t evident, Capital is reported to have done an honest job of fit and finish that makes the boats quite pleasant places in which to live.

There are, of course, problems:

“The settee in the saloon is too small.” “The pointy end of the platform double is too narrow.” “We’ve had two fires on our alcohol stove.” “Ventilation is only fair.”

These are owner critiques of an interior that seems otherwise to do a good job of filling the bill. The nav station (starboard) and galley (port) are not only big, they’re placed for optimal communication abovedecks. The head to port, and hanging lockers to starboard form a nice divider separating the forecabin from the saloon, enhancing cruising privacy. There’s a quarterberth to starboard. One owner labels it “claustrophobic,” but as a combination catch-all and secure sea berth, quarterberths are the best. We’d love to see them make a comeback against “aft staterooms” on smaller boats touted as comfortable offshore boats. Some boats also have a pilot berth to starboard, in place of lockers—another snug bunk when underway and heeled over.

Construction Inch-thick fiberglass through the bilge area made up for what the builders of the ’60s and ’70s lacked in sophisticated mastery of their materials. The boat is heavy because she is heavily built. You might, today, to overstate an extreme example, build a boat twice as strong that weighed half as much. However, these boats have been around since the ’60s—we’ll see in 40 years or so how boats being built today have fared.

“My wife and I frequently sail ours on 1000-mile cruises.” “Ours has been sailed to Hawaii.” “My boat has raced over 20,000 offshore miles.” “I do my own deliveries to Mexico and back. We’ve run into some tough stuff and racked up over 8,000 nautical miles.”

These testimonials are evidence that the old-fashioned technique of layering cloth, mat, and roving into a “brick outhouse” has produced some sturdy boats.

The decks are balsa-cored, but plywood is used extensively at the edges of the deck and in spots where hardware is attached. Sometimes not enough attention was paid to sealing the core. Several owners report having had to redo their decks, either in spots or entirely. Others report leaks around the chainplates. The hull/deck joint, however, appears to be have been done well. The deck is dropped onto an inward-turning flange in the hull. That joint is bedded with sealant and mechanically fastened with bolts on 4″ centers. That seam is then sealed with the signature C & C aluminum toerail.

“We’ve had our boat for six years without a single deck leak,” a San Diego sailor reports.

Performance The Newport 41 is at her best upwind in a breeze. She tacks in 80 degrees and stands up well under full sail, chomping along on her sailing lines at about 25 degrees of heel. A cruising sailor who doesn’t race his 41 says, “When other boats have to power to weather, I can sail and enjoy it.”

The Mark II version differs from the Mark I with a reconfigured rudder that adds over two feet to her waterline. It has marginally more sail area, apparently from the lowering of the boom by more than a foot, thus increasing her P dimension without having to change spars. This change, which would seem to be around 15 sq. ft. or so, given the E measurement, doesn’t seem to be reflected in the Mark II’s stated and rated sail area.

As you might expect, she’s at her worst in winds under 10. In British Columbia, where drifting is a way of life, one owner reports that his 150% “balloon jib” is a good antidote.

Newport 41

Balance, maneuverability, and seakindliness are other areas in which the N-41 deserves high marks. “Sports car” steering comes from her deep rudder. Self-tending ease on the helm comes from her long, even lines and gradually faired sections. The heft and solidity of a deep, heavy boat make her motion something that sailors of all kinds can appreciate.

The standard offset propeller is less of a success. Not only is it a source of considerable parasitic drag under sail, but it makes the helm a hair-trigger proposition under power. “Backing is an experience,” said one owner. ” It’s best accomplished at higher speeds with ‘lock to lock’ adjustments.”

Those who have fitted feathering or folding pros enjoy less drag and better control in reverse.

Owners say the engine will push the boat up to and over seven knots.

Conclusions The N-41 makes an excellent case for the fact that a boat that was designed intelligently and built well in the first place has a good chance of standing the tests of time.

One evidence of the thoroughness with which this boat was built and supported is the owner’s manual supplied by Capital Yachts—a manual to put others to shame. It attempts, and in fact mostly succeeds, in instructing a new owner not only about the construction and fittings of boat, down to fairly minute detail, but what to carry in her, how to tune and sail her, and more. We downloaded the old manual to get details about the boat, and ended up reading large sections of it. It’s a conscientious gift of experience from builder to buyer.

Speed and maneuverability are significant virtues in a cruising boat, and the N-41 has retained them. Sailors who enjoy racing but are less happy about the expense, discomfort, and “to the edge” design of today’s racing boats will find the Newport 41 to their liking.

There are several websites available for Newport owners, with the central one at SailNet. See http://webhost.sailnet.com/newport/ .

At press time there are six Newport 41s for sale at www.yachtworld.com . Asking prices range from $48,900 to $75,900, with a median at about $60,500. Selling prices, as always, will be somewhat lower.

Thanks for the good work and info.

Darrell, a recently found letter from Geo Cuthbertson will dispute the legend that the Newport 41 was a refried Redline 41. To quote George: “So, Newport 41 was two years later and a ton lighter, being a considerably shallower hull, i.e.they were two separate and distinct designs”. If you’d like an e-copy I would be happy to send. From my observations, having both the lines of the N41 (1968) and Red jacket (1965), I would suggest that the N41 hull is closer to Red Jacket (with a different keel, rig and cabin and about 3-4″ more freeboard) than the Redline. Cheers, Peter Cohrs, Kingston , Ontario

PS.. I was inspired by this article to acquire a Newport 41, which I did, a 1986 MkII (after a Corvette and a Frigate). there IS a Redline 41 at Kingston Yacht Club, and while there are similarities, they aren’t the same hull. Why I doubted my observations and skepticism, I’ll never know. George’s letter settled it.

There are differences that can be attributed to production line changes, design changes, and simply construction technique changes most likely. To say they are not the same design is a little ridiculous. The molds came from the c&c redline, they are designed from Sparkman and Stephens offsets. You will find differences in hulls even within the c&c production line itself along with the various models they produced. The table of offsets is close enough on the newport 41 to the c&c 41 that I would say calling them different hull “designs” is a little crazy. True that no boat has the same hull as any other boat though…. hah.

So, John. What you are saying is that Geo. Cuthbertson has written a letter of lies, and that the N41 C&C lines are plagiarized from S&S. That’s a pretty bold and ignorant statement. In addition to GHC’s letter, I SPOKE with Henri M. Adriaanse, who DREW the N41 lines at C&C. Henri made it crystal clear than the N41 was not a RedLine- period. He said It would have been very impractical and expensive to modify the RL moulds to the N41 shapes. Also the N41 was designed to have extra volume for cruising “stuff”, and be lighter, for California airs. So, Henry’s account validates GHC’s letter. Furthermore, I have overlaid the N41 lines with the lines of Red Jacket, and other than the extra freeboard, cabin trunk, rudder and keel, the lines are damned near a match. It appears as though the N41 is a cruising variant of Red Jacket. I’ve offered this drawing and observation to Henri, JohnKelly Cuthbertson and Rob Mazza (C&C des’r and part time c&C historian) and none have turned the idea down. The N41 is certainly not a RL41. I think you should retract you accusation of C&C plagiarization. In any case, I will forward this to JohnKelly.

Lockley Newport 17 Sailboat Review, Modifications, and Parts Sources.

You found this page because you're considering a used newport 17 or searching for parts. .

Bill's Lockley Newport 17 Sailboat Buyers Guide Review, Modifications, and Parts Sources.

I started writing this page on 7/3/22. It will be updated periodically. Join my Lockley Newport sailboat Group for answers to your sailboat questions.

Bill's Buyer's Guide to used Newport 17 Sailboats.

The Newport 17 Sailboat was manufactured from 1974 to 1980. It weighs 800 pounds. Waterline length, 16.17 ft (0%), the closest to 15 ft ; Maximum draft, 4.75 ft ; Ballast, 235 lbs ; Hull speed, 5.39 knots.

The N17 is basically the Dodge Aries "K" car of sailboats. Just like Dodge, Lockley Newport made the N17 with the basic essentials to keep the retail price affordable. This is why they're cheap to buy used today, which is appealing to 1st time sailboat buyers. You learn why it was cheap after you've sailed on other boats. It lacks a lot of refinements, but it's a great sailboat for entering the hobby. I've had my Newport 17 for three years and learned a lot about it's best and worst attributes.

What's good about the Newport 17 sailboats?

• newport 17 hulls and decks are durable. .

The fiberglass hull and top cover is very strong. I'm 195 pounds and stand on the 48 year old top cover often without any cracking. I haven't met anyone in the Lockley / Newport Boats FB group who's had to repair a hole in their Newport 17 hull. My first sailboat was a Surprise by the same manufacturer. It had been dropped on concrete by accident without any damage. Lockley / Newport Boats are like tanks.

•  Newport 17 overnight cuddy fits two adults.

I'm 6ft 3' and can fully lay down on either starboard or port side in the Newport 17 cuddy. There is 13.25" diameter molded recess for portable toilet,  under the forward berth, but finding toilet that will fit can be challenging.

Newport 17 sailboat portable toilet size for cuddy

Newport 17 molded recess for Portable Toilet. Samuel Klein posted these photos on how he modified the recess to fit this HASSOCK Portable Toilet .

•  Newport 17 sailboats look great!

This is likely the reason why you're considering buying a Newport 17. It still looks good! The design has aged nicely over the past four decades. I'm often told my Newport 17 is beautiful and they're surprised when I tell them I paid only $600 for it with trailer.

•  Newport 17 is great for new Sailors.

Everything is simple on this sailboat with only the essential rigging. After you get more accustomed to sailing the Newport 17, you can add whatever refinements to the rigging you want. It's great blank canvas for DIYer's to add and tweak things.

The Bad Things about Newport 17 Sailboats.

• factory replacement parts don't exist anymore..

Lockley Newport Boats was a small family operated manufacturer. Rigging is Rigging. You can buy universal parts or adopt rigging from any other sailboats brands / models.  T he only factory specification replacement part you can buy for Newport 17 is the mast made and sold by DWYER MAST . You can buy aftermarket updated Newport 17 rudder design by Rudder Craft . The cuddy covers, deck rails, tiller, centerboard and any other mechanicals you'll have to fabricate yourself or repair.

•  Centerboard / Keel prone to getting stuck or line breaking.

The Newport 17 centerboard keel tucks inside the hull.  You raise and lower the centerboard with a line in the center of the deck. The line is held in place with a cleat. This line  attaches to a retracting reel under the deck.

Newport 17 centerboard line location

You can see the reel if you look under the floor from the cuddy.

Lockley Newport 17 sailboat centerboard reel and winch

Here's a photo by Richard Smith of the Winch and reel Assembly removed.

If your Lockley / Newport Boats Newport 17 centerboard line breaks, you need to either raise the boat or tip it on it's side to access the centerboard. You feed new centerboard line from the cabin attached to a wire (watch video) and attach new centerboard from the bottom of boat.

Fix and repair newport 17 centerboard line

If you get late 70's Newport 17, the centerboard has updated hank crank with access cover from the cabin for repairs. (Pictured above)

This video guide shows you   how to replace centerboard line on most sailboats   including the Newport 17.

Newport 17 Main Sheet Traveler Rigging Layout.

This is the direction 3/8" diameter line in your Newport 17 mainsheet halyard line. Notice end of the line is attached to block at top of photo. It has halyard line eye splice, but you can tie your own knot instead if necessary. I like this Double Braid Polyester Sailing Line Rope for my sailboats and will tie my own knot. Otherwise  Castobargains makes halyard lines with an eye splice for your Newport 17 Traveler.

Newport 17 Center Board / Swing Keel Dimensions.

Another common issue is over time Newport 17's centerboard develops corrosion causing it to stick inside the hull.  We moor our Newport 17 on a lake with seasonal algae that builds up on the keel causing it to stick.   If you've just launched your sailboat and the centerboard won't lower, let the boat sit in the water for a day or two and the water may break centerboard loose.  If soaking doesn't work, you need to get the boat raised so you can pull out the centerboard and clean it's surface. I've seen people raise their sailboats with jack stands and lumber beams, two engine lifts, or use a tractor with nylon tow straps tied to the shovel to raise the boat. If you don't have these options, take the boat to a Marina with a repair shop and boat lift.

•  No Navigation lights.

Under power of motor (sails down) or sleeping at night, You need one white light on the stern and one white light on top of your masthead and bi-color green and red light on your bow.

Under sail power at night, y ou need white light on the stern and tri-color white on top of masthead and bi-color green and red light on your bow.

See more details on   Navigation Light Rules .

•  Non-Reefing Mainsheet.

Newport 17's factory mainsheet doesn't allow reefing. This allows you to shorten the mainsheet in high winds. Getting caught in 16+ knots with 24+ wind gusts will get scary under a full sail. You can buy new mainsheet that allows reefing. I ordered my   mainsheet for the Newport 17 with reefing points   for $675.

•  No Boom Vang.

A Boom Vang pulls the boom downward and removes the slack from your mainsheet. I bought this   Boom Vang for my Newport 17 .

•  No Furling jib.

Not crucial, but very helpful for Solo sailing. Avoid your jib sail lines flopping around in the wind like two angry snakes on your deck.

•  No Outhaul rigging on the boom.

Only crucial if you're sailing with aftermarket loose foot mainsheet. It allows you to adjust the position of the mainsheet along the boom on low wind days. You can easily make your own Outhaul with one block and a cleat.

•  No Topping lift, ( see guide here )

Topping lift is a line that runs from the top of your mast to the end of your boom. Without a topping lift, your boom will drop onto the floor or your foot when lower your mainsheet. Not having one will become annoying and it's usually first thing people add. I recommend adding shackle to your boom, so you disconnect the Topping Lift while sailing, otherwise it may obstruct your mainsheet.

•  Wooden rudder ages and cracks.

Lockley Newport Boats saves money on using marine grade wood for their rudders. If you moor your sailboat on a lake, you need to preserve the life of your rudder and remove it or tip back out of the water when not sailing. People have used fiberglass to repair their cracked rudders.

•  Wood cuddy covers age and develop rain water leaking.

Over time the wood used for the three cuddy cover planks will warp, causing rain to leak inside the boat. Many people make rain shields.

Best Gas Outboard Motor for the Newport 17?

Suzuki's 2.5hp model DF2.5L2 outboard motor is popular choice in our Newport 17 Sailboat group. It's a perfect choice for any sailboat that is 22' and smaller. At only 31 lbs, it's the lightest 4-stroke Suzuki long shaft model outboard ever built.

best outboard for trailer sailboat suzuki 2-5hp df2 5l2 outboard motor

Best Electric Trolling Motor for the Newport 17?

You need a motor for several reasons on a sailboat. Maneuvering your boat to and from the boat launch. Back and forth to a mooring buoy and when you need to avoid catastrophes from happening like running into trees or rocks. Many people use gas outboard motors up to 5 hp. We sail our Newport 17 sailboat on a city lake that doesn't allow gas motors.

This  Minn Kota C2 30 lb Thrust Trolling Motor will get two adults back to shore with 16 knot head wind under full charge. If you predict sailing with four adults, invest in the Minn Kota 55-lb Thrust .

I use this Mighty Max 12 volt battery in this battery box & power center mounted to floor inside the cuddy. I'm using this  Trolling Motor Extension cable Kit that runs under crew bench seat.

The battery is charged with this 12V Sunar Solar Panel  mounted on top of porthole on the stern.

Buy Lockley Newport 17 Sailboat Review, Modifications, and Parts Sources.

Before I tell you everything that myself and my Newport 17 friends hate about it, let's remind ourselves it was sold as an “entry level” sailboat. Reasonably priced to get families on the water without breaking the bank. This is why you see Newport 17's selling cheaper than same size sailboats. Unless the dealer or previous owners added aftermarket parts, it lacks a lot of features and rigging. Many Newport 17 owners are DIYers like myself that have added these refinements on low budgets.

Release Mainsheet before you capsize your Newport 17 Sailboat!

Lockley Newport 17 Hull floatation when capsized

Any sailboat can capsize with an inexperienced Captain.  You simply don't sail in wind speeds beyond your skill level on any sailboat. The  Newport 17 is 700 pounds with a small keel. It's sails like a Hippo on a Unicycle in high winds. The Newport 17 factory mainsheet doesn't allow reefing. Getting caught in 16+ knots with 24+ wind gusts in Newport 17 under full sail is scary. A high wind can push you over if you don't release your mainsheet!  The individual who owns the capsized Newport 17 in above photo was inexperienced. If they could have reefed their mainsheet, this accident may have been avoided.

How to recover Newport 17 sailboat if you capsize?

Add floatation device to the top of your mast. Two or three milk jugs will work. If you don't have mast floatation when you capsize, you can loop a children's bouncy ball around the mast and drag it to the top to lift the sunken last. Then pull up the centerboard and have somebody tow your boat to shore, so you can bail out the cuddy.

Craziest Internet Story I've found about the Newport 16 & 17 sailboats.

Captain Nasty aka Captain Robby Smith Jupiter, Fla

Mady August 29, 2022

It’s very sad that Captain Robby Smith passed away. It would have been so fun to have met him and heard his Sailing stories in person. It sounds like he had a real passion for Adventure!

Chris August 23, 2022

What a great story. I had read it a few years back when I first bought my NP17. Great site!

Newport 30 owners review.

newport sailboats review

2 comments:

Hi Craig, Wow, what a surprise to find my post here, Thanks! Like you we really love our Newport 30, I just wish we'd hurry up and get some good weather...like no rain. We are going to try our spinnaker this season, should be good for a 'bonehead' post as we've never used one before. We did set it up last weekend and it took us so long I'm glad we did it in our slip. Thanks again for picking up on my review!

This is an informative post, thanks! My company recently purchased an older, rather tired N30 MK I for a total refit. It's about a 3-month job total, and once she's complete we'll be offering her as a bareboat lease/charter vessel down in the Florida Keys. If anyone has questions about how to do bulkhead/chainplate replacement, plumbing & electric overhauls, or even Newport 30 interior layout customization (dealing with the GRP interior liner)... feel free to drop us a line. Glad to help. [email protected]

Basic specs., sailing characteristics.

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Newport 17 is 2.73, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 5.4 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Newport 17 is about 63 kg/cm, alternatively 356 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 63 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 356 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

Inflatable dinghy: 8'10" dana inflatable boat review, 8ft 10in dana review by ambassador jamie fowler.

I have a 30ft Newport sailboat and the Dana is the perfect addition! She fits perfectly on the bow. She is super lightweight and I am able to crank her up on my own, place her on the deck or take her off with only one person!

I have had the Newport Vessels Dana for little over a month now and I can honestly say that this little  inflatable dinghy   has surpassed my expectations! Initially I wanted a sturdy boat to be able to shuttle people to and from the boat from an anchorage, be able to zip around the lake for some sunset cruising and dock up for a dinner here and there at the lakefront restaurants. In my first month this dinghy has been great, keeping me and friends safe, dry, and comfortable while we zip around the lake.

newport sailboats review

I currently have the Dana outfitted with a small 3.5 HP outboard engine mounted to the dinghy and it works great! I chose this motor to commute around because I live on a bigger lake, if you’re only using the boat to get to shore, an electric motor works great and will save you money. We have even carried four grown adults in the Dana, the dinghy still felt stable, safe, and moved at a good clip! With that much weight and such a small motor, the inflatable dinghy takes longer to get moving, but once you have momentum it moved along nicely. I opted for the second bench seat which has come in very handy, especially when taking people to and from shore or other sailboats, I would definitely recommend always ordering the second seat. Soon I will be ordering two  Newport Underseat Bags   to store life vests...and to make the aluminum seats more comfortable when riding through wakes or waves.

I recommend mounting navigation or visibility lights, like the  Railblaza Bow Lights   or   Railblaza Dinghy Visibility Kit   to use at night, they work great and will keep you safe after the sun goes down. (One Coast Guard ticket and those lights will pay for themselves!)

newport sailboats review

The Dana is sturdy, durable, fun and does everything I need while still small enough for me to be able to handle on my own. I’ve only had this little tender boat for a short period of time but feel like I have gained all the confidence in her that I need to take her on longer adventures! I plan to use her to crab as well as take her scuba diving this summer. I will be able to use the inflatable boat as a buoy to mark my diving location as well as a tool to hold any diving gear.

These boats really are versatile, durable, dependable and SUPER fun to drive! I can’t wait to get back out on the water and see what adventures we can get in to!

Came out with some friends to celebrate some birthdays, and was not disappointed! The directions on finding the tiki were clear, boarding was a breeze and Nico was a great captain for the night. We did the 7:30-9pm time slot and it was perfect, we boarded as the sun was finally setting and were able to cruise around as the night was taking over. Nico was knowledgeable about the area and should us some points of interest. There is a sushi restaurant and a place where you can order burgers and other food right next to where you board the tiki. It can get quite busy to make sure you get there with plenty of time to spare if you plan on ordering food to take out on the water with you. Sodas, ice, and some water bottles are provided for you, but make sure you have a good playlist of music ready so you can connect to their bluetooth speaker.

I was kayaking one day...when I noticed...a tiki boat drive past me. I knew I HAD to try that one day. When my friends wanted to rent a duffy boat, I recommended we go with a tiki boat instead! My friends and I (total of 6 maximum) had a complete BLAST. We were able to bring our own food/drinks and they provided ice and plastic cups. They drove us around the Newport bay while we played our music and drank the morning away. Our captain was great and showed us an awesome time. Everyone was waving at us - you will definitely be the center of attention on this boat! Be sure to use the restroom before you board - they have a bathroom on the dock area. After we got back, we went straight to brunch and had a great day!

Came here with siblings and cousins to enjoy our Sunday together and it was so chill, our captain Willie was so nice , you can bring your own alcohol and snacks will definitely do it again

Super fun experience! Thank you Kevin for being an awesome captain! Totally recommend for any occasion!!!

My friends and I had a really great experience with them! Our captain (Jack) was really kind and accommadating! It's byob and food, but they supply plates, ice, cooler, and several non-alc drinks. All in all, I would definitely boat with them again!

Thank you Cruisin Tikis Newport Beach and our Captain Joi. We had the best time celebrating a birthday!! We needed 2 Tikis to accommodate our family (3) children included. The weather wasn't the best but we had the best time and even saw dolphins!! If you're looking for something different to do, I highly recommend doing the Tiki Cruise!!

Photo of Be E.

Thanks captain Lauren! My friends and I, had a great experience. We enjoyed our tiki cruise, great company, music, snacks and drinks. They provide ice, cups and plates. I just wished the speakers were a bit louder. It was a warm day, but didn't feel it all. It felt nice and breezy, light sweaters are recommended. You will not need one at all if you're drinking.

Photo of Marc D.

We did a 2 hour cruise with Captain Willie. This was a unique and awesome way to celebrate a birthday. We even got to bring our dog on board. As you are cruising the harbor on the tiki boat you are definitely the attention getters out of all the boats. Do it!

Photo of Sara L.

My husband gave me a birthday cruise in September 2020 - a cruise on this Tiki boat around the Bay; what a great time! We live in Newport but I have been cautious person with the COVID-19, so we wondered what we could do for my birthday. This was perfect! A two-hour vacation on the Bay; forget your worries. We only had the three of us but six could easily be accommodated and I would feel safe. Captain JAMES PARKER knows his stuff and he grew up on the Newport Bay with sail and motor boats and knows his territory. We gave him that "where was John Wayne's home" and "Nicholas Cage's home" questioning; he passed. My friend brought tuna poke, sushi, ceviche etc from Bear Flag near where the Tiki boats are; delicious and best fish around! My husband brought the drinks and the Susie Cake. I brought iTunes. What a blast! We are doing it again with friends from out of town who want a day away. They also have a breakfast tour that sounds like a great way to see old friends without doing the same old restaurant.

41 C & C Newport MK II

  • Add to quote

A freinds brother is considering purchasing a 41' C & C Newport Mk II Joy '76; Many new upgrades; Perkins 40 hp; Artful Dodger; Full sail inventory; Fast, fully equipped and a real "joy" to sail. In Homer. The asking price is $73,000. Any thoughts?

newport sailboats review

I looked closely at one about 18 months ago in very good shape: electric winches, good interior, decent engine, good shape cosmetically. I think it was around $50k. $73k seems like a lot for a 1976 boat, unless a restoration had been done that is really amazing. The other thing is that the boats were designed by C&C but built by Newport, and that might lead one to think about build quality issues at the hull-deck joint, the lay-up of the hull, chain plates, etc. One last thing, the 6' 3" draft might give some pause. It is a pretty boat, however, and there were some good articles about them online.

newport sailboats review

Not sure where Homer is... $73K does indicate that this boat had better be pristine, but they are pretty boats - although IIRC the MkIIs went from the more C&C looking windows to the typical Newport window pattern, and I think the looks suffered for it... Classic C&C sheerline, rather narrow by todays standards, and you've also got the "big jib/skinny main" syndrome that was typical of the day. Check that the winches are up to the task - those large headsails will need some power and often the winches provided were marginal. Should be a great upwind boat.

newport sailboats review

I have raced on these boats and spent some time in the bowels of their bilges and lockers. While there seems to be a variety of opinion about the build quality of these boats (so much so that there may actually have been a wide range of build quality in the boats themselves) , the ones that I knew personally had serious build quality issues. They do sail very well upwind but were really squirelly downwind. The $75,000 sales price seems to be nearly double what they typically go for (the two deals on Newport 41s I was asked to comment on by potential buyers ended up with sales prices such that one was around and the other well below $40K. The more expensive of these boats was an 80 or 81 boat that reportedly had been carefully restored and upgraded with a newly rebuilt engine, fresh awlgrip, relatively new upholstery, nicely varnished woodwork both on the interior and exterior, a great sail inventory and modern electronics.). Respectfully, Jeff

I agree, $73K for a '76 Newport 41 in Homer, Alaska is too much. But then I have found quite a few boats for sale in Alaska that were asking way more than the average for the same boat elsewhere. Could this be due to the fact there are fewer sailboats in Alaska, so the owners there think with supply/demand it warrants asking so much? Of course, if you don't live in Alaska, that's an awful long way to go to buy one. Whenever I've come across a boat for sale up there, I always figured it should be LESS than the average asking price due to the remote location and relatively small window for delivering it south. All in all, however, the N41 is a pretty decent boat for the money - if you're buying one in the typical price range that JeffH mentioned. It's not an offshore passage making boat, but can be a fun, lively coastal performance cruiser.

is this boat still up for sale? I have seen this boat in Homer. As far as the price take a good look on internet for information. Larry

had the N-41MK2 for 23 years in my family.... sadly sold her 2003, the buyer got a great boat and a great deal... me not so much!

Naive question: is the cost for your friend to sail or transport a boat of this size to your area from the lower 48 high enough to preclude the larger market in the Puget Sound area? $70K would let choose from a LOT of boats in that larger NW region, including more-evolved rudder 'n' keel designs from the 80's. (Small confession: we were also once interested in a good looking N-41, but were dissuaded by the problematical build quality of Newport boats in general.) L

The N41 was not the same build quality of the other smaller Newport /capital yacht boats, fast, very strong and tough offshore if you can deal with the less than Saber joinery work down below. The glass layup is well over one inch think below the waterline. Some upgrades were needed with cockpit drainage, stronger ports/storm shields ect. I think the fellow that bought mine is on a extended round the world cruise

As a present '83 Newport 41 MKII owner I can only say good things. We bought her in 06 and have just recently completed our offshore trip through the Pacific where she is lying in NZ. She is unfortunately for me up for sale again. I know you can find cheaper Newports on the west coast. In terms of build quality, you'll have to check her out obviously. Our '83 hull deck is bolted every 4 inches. The hull below the water line is well over an inch solid glass. Our ST56 Primary Lewmars are fine with our massive Laminate genoa. As we were taking her offshore, we replaced our chainplates as they were, well, not up to snuff. You could easily lift the boat by our new ones. We also installed an inner Forstay for a storm Jib which is easily removable and spectra running backs which added significant rigidity to a somewhat flexible mast. Not a big deal coastally but in 30 foot seas it was nice to know she was supported. We raced her casually around the buoys and in a distance race in Tonga and did quite well amongst many a beneteau or hunter or even our rival, an oyster 56. She handled great one race when coming out of the lee of one of the islands. The Hunter we were trailing was way over powered and delayed putting a reef in. Our Newport had no such issue with more sail area and we quickly took the lead. Sorry I'm rambling........ She's a great boat. 76 may be a bit to ask unless she has new rigging, and engine. Good luck all the same! R4L

Hi RL4 Not sure if you sare about, but would like to catch up with you and your N41. I am in Auckland. D

Bavaria 38E Alamitos Bay. Jun 4, 2020. #13. I personally doubt that you will much enjoy sailing west to east in the Caribbean on a beamy, 30-ft boat built for the Newport to Catalina run across a 26 n.mi. channel. Boats sailing the Caribbean these days tend to be nearer 40 ft, often larger.

The N27, provided it is sound in terms of rigging, sails, engine, etc, should be able to make it up the WA coast to the San Juans in good weather. Shipping is no problem, the boat is smaller than others that make the same trip up and down I-5 every year.

It was also my first "big boat" with inboard diesel engine, self tailing winches, wheel steering with autopilot, roller furling headsail, spinnaker in sock, marine head with holding tank, pressure hot and cold water, etc.

  6. Newport 41

Sailboat Reviews; Sailboats Over 40ft; used_sailboats; Newport 41 Derived from C&C's Redline 41, this design had a long and successful production run. It lacks some of the amenities of 'full-volume'modern boats belowdecks, but is a tough, fast, seakindly boat offshore.

  7. Review Newport 30

The transom step is great. The boat is small enough to handle easily, large enough for 3 in comfort. The Newport 30 has a short boom and so not much sail area in her mainsail which makes her slow in light airs. More roach in the mainsail would give more speed without resorting to spinnaker (and larger crew).

  8. Newport 30 Mk II -- seeking one. What to watch for?

Gorey. 10 posts · Joined 2003. #3 · Sep 29, 2008. Look for water intrusion around the steering pedistal. I think the cockpit sole is laminated with balsa, water will turn it to mush. Wiring in the Newports is cast into the fiberglass and when broken has to be replaced by rerouting through cracks and crannies.

  9. Newport 28 Used Boat Review

The appearance of the Newport 28 is certainly a bit dated by today's standard, but I think most would agree she remains a good looking boat nearly 35 years after her introduction in 1974. The pronounced sheer is a throwback to even earlier designs; although moderate overhang forward, short overhang aft, nearly vertical transom and raised ...

  15. Newport 27'

I'm 6' 1" and had a Newport 27' for many years. It was a great boat, not one I'd take across the Pacific, but a great N/W cruiser. I believe you have been misinformed about the headroom, since I believe I used to stand in the middle of the cabin.Other than the center the flush deck is definitely lower, but didn't seem to be a bother. I was in my 30s to mid 40s when I had her, had had neck ...

  16. Woud YOU take a Newport 30 offshore?

The Newport 30 is not built to withstand this as well as some boats are. Neither would a Catalina 30 be a good choice for this. Both are good sailing boats for daysailing, inshore and for short hops in good weather windows. Good choices would include Pacific Seacraft's boats, even the Flicka, as well as many others.
