12 AFFORDABLE BOAT INTERIOR DESIGN IDEAS

When we first moved aboard, our sailboat interior was a mess and we didn’t have the money to update it . We wanted to go cruising and our priorities were things like new sails, rigging, fiberglass repair, and electronics.

As much as I wanted a beautiful boat interior it was impossible to justify hiring an interior designer or updating the upholstery when we didn’t even have a dependable bilge pump! Fortunately, I found some creative boat interior design ideas and was able to makeover our sailboat for next to nothing.

In addition to sharing our boat interior restoration ideas, I’ve included my favorite boat interior photos from Pinterest and Instagram to further stoke your inspiration!

A quick note that this post contains affiliate links (so if you purchase through a link we’ll earn a small commission). The opinions are our own.

1. START BY DEEP CLEANING

As un-fun as it might be, a deep clean is the cheapest way to radically brighten your interior. It’s especially affordable if you use homemade boat cleaners. Dirty boat upholstery, mildewed cabin liners, and salt-encrusted hatches made our boat feel damp, dark, and generally unpleasant.

Deep cleaning (after years of neglect) drastically improved the boat cabin’s appearance and gave me a better idea of where to focus our boat interior makeover.

 • Professionally launder your upholstery
 • Wipe down the cabin liners with vinegar to prevent mildew and mold
 • Wash hatches to maximize natural light
 • Clean under all the cabin soles and the edges of any rotting boards
 • Wash the walls and treat any wood with the appropriate wax, oil, or varnish
 • Scrub out the bilge to prevent that boaty smell.

2. INSTALL INTERIOR BOAT LIGHTS

One of the great challenges of sailboat interior design is lighting. I’ve always felt that living on our sailboat is like living in a basement apartment because it is totally lacking in natural light !

One of the quickest ways to brighten things up is to install marine LED lights. The key to making LED boat lights look great, is placement.

The 3 best places to places to put LED strip lights on a sailboat

1. Under counter lighting. They look especially nice under cupboards or overhangs because the light strip is hidden.

View this post on Instagram < New battery installed! Lights and radio work. There’s LED strip lights which are great, but in the future we may need to swap those out for the multi colored ones. 2. LED rope lights make great courtesy lights . Tuck strip lighting on either side of a walkway to help guests navigate in the dark.

Battery operated fairy lights look cute coiled in a jar of seashells and are another easy way to add decorative lighting because no wiring is required. For the same reason, Solar Luci lamps and Solar Luci strings are a great option for lighting the cockpit.

3. COZY-UP TO NEW BEDDING

Ditch those damp cotton sheets and invest in hydrophobic options like 100% polyester. If you have a vberth, quarter berth, or non-standard sized bed, you may want to spend a few extra bucks on custom fitted boat sheets.

I know many cruisers who swear by memory foam mattresses and the Hypervent mattress pad for preventing condensation. If you like duvets and comforters, consider a mulberry silk option because it’s mold and mildew resistant.

4. FRESHEN THE HEAD

Add a splash of color to a dark bathroom with cheerful microfiber towels , Or, if you don’t want to feel like you’re camping, try the more luxurious quick-drying Turkish towels .

Tie them in with a cute wall-mounted soap dispenser and a spill-proof whicking air freshener and you’re on your way

5. GO GALLEY GOURMET

 • Replace a rusted or dull faucet with a sparkling new one with a pull-down sprayer.
 • Splash-out with colorful dish towels
 • Use biodegradable loofas and scrubbies instead of plastic
 • Pick up non-breakable dishware and glassware in fun patterns and designs.
 • Create extra space with chopping board stove and sink covers
 • Add custom knife, wine, and spice racks
 • Add a green bar to keep greens fresh without a fridge

6. BOAT INTERIOR UPHOLSTERY IDEAS

Reupholstering a boat is the single most expensive part of a sailboat interior refit but it makes a huge difference. It costs thousands of dollars if you hire someone to do it. Fortunately there are a few tricks we used to avoid a full upholstery overhaul.

 • Fun throw cushions and blankets can give your interior new life (and cover stained or threadbare upholstery)
 • Packed out seat cushions can be easily fixed by inserting a layer of high-density foam and batting on top of the existing foam.
 • If your upholstery is in really bad shape you may want to sew elasticated cushion coverlets that go over the top side of the cushion (it’s also a good way to protect nice new upholstery from boat projects (see: dirt, grease, and sweat stains).
 • You can reupholster your boat for a fraction of the cost if you do the sewing yourself. It’s possible to score good deals on durable materials and marine-grade fabrics online. Also, if you’re not a sewer but you’re going cruising, you may want to bring your boat interior fabric with you and have the cushions sewn up in a place like Mexico or Fiji. We eventually had all of our saloon cushions sewn up for $100 USD in Ensenada, Mexico.

If you choose to reupholster your boat, look for boat interior upholstery fabric . You don’t have to worry (as much) about finding a waterproof or UV-resistant fabric (because it will be inside). However, always choose a synthetic fabric , heavy-duty nylon thread, and plastic zippers. Cotton will eventually rot and metal zippers will rust. You can get away with not using marine upholstery but natural fibers are a big no-no!

7. CUT A RUG

8. LOVE YOUR WALLS

Securely fasten art, photos, and souvenirs to your walls. Mirrors are great for creating the illusion of space.

Privacy curtains are also a good way to add a splash of color and are straightforward to make

There are more projects to do, but we’re enjoying the results so far! 9. WHITEN AND BRIGHTEN YOUR SAILBOAT INTERIOR

Painting panels in light colors can brighten and modernize a boat cabin and set off teak trim. We repainted our red and blue fiberglass bathroom white and it made the space feel much bigger. It also makes it easy to clean because you can see the dirt.

10. STOW SIMPLY WITH CUTE STORAGE SOLUTIONS

Boats are always short on storage space but a few decorative baskets and storage containers can really improve the look of the space while giving you more room to tuck things away.

11. FUN AND FUNCTIONAL WINDOW COVERINGS

12. CHOOSE A FUN FEATURE

Let your imagination run wild. A feature wall, table, or piece of artwork can really change the feel of a sailboat interior. Have fun with colors, patterns, and make your new floating home your own.

If you’re still feeling overwhelmed about revamping your sailboat interior you may want to consider hiring professional help . There are plenty of interior designers who would welcome the challenge of working on a boat! Look for someone who has experience designing for small spaces and tiny homes.

We hope you enjoyed this list of custom boat interior ideas…

Have you ever wondered what long-term living on a beautifully restored boat would be like ? We have prepared a blog post for you on this subject called Living on a boat full time . We think you may enjoy reading this article. You can reach it by clicking on the link. Anyway, let's move on 🙂

Finding Inspiration for DIY Boat Interior Restoration

Exploring creative ideas and designs for transforming a boat's interior through DIY restoration efforts.

Sometimes, there is already a clear vision as to what kind of colors and decorations one wants for the new interior. However, others should think about it properly before embarking on the work. There are a multitude of resources and pictures available for DIY boat interior restoration . A reading material can include sailing magazines, literature about decorating boats or for example Pinterest or boating sites all this at your fingertips. Seeing real-life boat interiors is possible by attending local boat exhibitions too. This will further result in setting up a reference library when you have settled on one particular design style. Such reference collections would be useful in finding what items would be needed once someone decides to embark on such endeavor .

One must remember that while boat exteriors may look alike, the interior is an area where personal style and personality may express themselves the most . Be courageous with creativity since this area will be home to most of your cherished leisure moments and nothing more than love should be given here.

Boat Interior Decorating Basics

Illustrating the fundamental principles and elements of decorating a boat's interior to achieve both aesthetics and functionality.

As tempting it might be to treat the inside of a boat like a house, practicality remains paramount . Decking out an interior with knick-knacks and adornments may sound appealing but such things easily become clutter during navigation.

In picking materials for the new interior, there is need to walk on egg shells. A marine accessory will require higher prices than any ordinary equivalent. Nonetheless, they are available elsewhere at lower prices. Storage containers from household retailers can substitute expensive galley utensils bought from specialty stores.

Conversely, upholstery, electronics, curtains, and flooring call for marine-grade supplies.A boat’s internal environment is consistently affected by both fresh and salt water. The latter, however, is particularly corrosive to equipment and materials . While resorting to cheaper non-marine-grade options might save you money initially, it will prove to be unsustainable once you have to replace them after a few years. The knowledge of the cost of boat interior restoration therefore becomes very important in this context.

Lastly, there are some things that should just be left behind considering the kind of motion that takes place on waters. They include fragile items and those that can easily fall ; these replaceable with plastic alternatives such as glass frames or drinking vessels.

Boat Interior Restoration

Showcasing the process and remarkable transformations involved in restoring the interior of a boat to its former glory.

Having looked at these factors, we can now consider what are some of the elements that could bring about considerable changes when restoring boat interiors.

Boat Furnishings Renovations

Soft furnishings are the single biggest impact on a yacht interior . These include seat covers, biminis and cushions that might add bright color or muted hues to give character to any space. There is a limitless selection of materials that includes patterned fabrics , leather upholstery among others. One’s choice of colour says much about them as an individual. Most new boats will leave the shipyard in neutral colours but this is an opportunity for the owner to introduce some personalization. One could decide on a lively , colourful palette or keep it sleek with black and grey tones that consider the size of the room so as not to overcrowd its compact nature.

Creative Yacht Storage Solutions

Almost all boating vessels are admittedly short of storage area hence necessitating careful planning in terms of interior design in order to make good use of every square inch available. A clutterless environment gives an impression of more space and usability especially while cruising . Putting drawers within steps provides much needed small item storage while also turning under-bunks into a treasure chest for such things like towels, bedding and clothes. Raising beds represents a clever idea for capitalizing on normally wasted spaces below them . This helps integrate visually appealing storage boxes matching the color scheme as part of the overall design.

Flooring Transformation

Another major area capable of being changed dramatically is flooring with amazing results . For instance, due to its durability, waterproofing and ease of maintenance marine vinyl flooring has become most preferred by many people. Marine vinyl comes in different colors and designs; hence allowing creative expression that is consistent with the main theme chosen for designing it. However, caution must be taken not to overwhelm small spaces with overly intricate patterns or dark shades . In colder climates especially those who would prefer softer floor underfoot can opt for marine grade carpets which are available in plenty colors.

Window Covering Considerations

Window coverings offer another range besides soft furnishings . This can be blinds in different shades or timber tones to add sophistication to the space. Alternatively, blackout curtains in cabins are great for improved sleep during overnight stays on water. A good budget plan enables motorised shades that are highly convenient and could also be custom-made to fit the style of interior decor.

Personal Touches

Regardless of whether one intends to live onboard, travel round the world or go for weekend cruises along the inland waterways; the inside should be synonymous with home. Some familiar items like family pictures, wall art and bedding from home can be used to create an inviting and homely atmosphere . Accessories help bring everything together with a personal touch. All matching or contrasting colours could be used in making of decorative pillows which are more comfortable when spending time on board at night. In addition to this, throw blankets may have a boat’s name written on it for adding a unique touch, plus purposefully selected lighting can alter the mood completely. Functional stark white light does not compare to colored LED lights that serve both aesthetic and practical purposes by marking walkways and accentuating saloon spaces as well as cabins.

Rejuvenating a derelict boat and restoring it to its original state is a bit challenging, but very satisfying. On many online platforms, there are thousands of boats for sale around the world that can be purchased by different people . To have a complete restoration project or simply to organize the interior according to individual preferences, visit well-known sites to buy your boat in an easy and informed way. In order to have a smooth journey towards your maritime dreams there are always experts ready to give you any necessary guidance. You should also consider the cost of boat interior restoration when you plan your project .

7 Interior Design Improvements to Revive an Out-of-Style Boat

7-interior-design-tips-for-your-old-boat

Have you bought a boat that’s been at sea for too long? Have you inherited a yacht, or somehow come to possess an old boat that you thought was past its best? If so, this article could help you with the refurbishment process.

There are old vessels out there that have life in them yet. As long as she still floats, no boat, dinghy, tug, or passenger ferry is truly ready for scrap. Floating is the number one check for buying a used boat. Floating without leaks is even better. As to the innards – well – sometimes a full renovation is the only way. A slight problem that comes with refurbishing a vessel is what is inside it. Is it rust or revival-ready? Would it survive a renovation? If so, here are the best 7 interior design improvements you can make on your new (old) boat to bring it up to modernity.

The 7 Tricks to Revive an Old Boat

Try these interior boat design tricks to update any vessel. From a 90’s tour vessel to a private yacht – these tips can save you time, money, and effort.

1 – Develop a Plan

Before you do anything, set yourself a budget and develop a boat restoration plan to spend it. Plan to buy the materials you need immediately. This is a hard lesson for house flippers. When you begin with a vision for your new space, you look at finishings which are in trend at that moment. If you don’t buy immediately, you may miss those trends and be short of stock when the time comes to finish the boat refurbishment. Plan everything from the outset and make your purchases before you begin.

The following tips contain things to think about spending good money on.

2 – Spend on the Deep Clean

An important step in the refurbishment process is to deep clean the whole interior before you start to decorate. If you can’t do it yourself, then employing a deep cleaning company to do it for you is a safe alternative. Make sure they detail the inside from top to bottom. Once this task is complete and the tech and engine get an update, you can finally start to get down to designing business.

3 – Update the Seating

In some cases, replacement boat seat cushions can make a huge difference to the boat’s interior. Every boat, be it high end or trawler, has a seating area in it. These seating areas gather dust, bacteria, and spills. Ripping the cushioning out and starting again is an efficient way to solve the problem. Complete the look with new cushion covers and you have a whole new room. Check out the African Mud Cloth trend for inspiration.

4 – Budget for Home Comforts

The whole point in all this is to make your new, inherited, or refurbished boat, feel like your own. Prepare to spend a large chunk of your budget buying the digital devices, electronics, and luxury touches that you need to make it feel like your floating home. Think of functionality and of little luxuries. If you’re going to perform a refurbishment, you might as well make it high end.

5 – Match Your Fabrics

You can soften up the hard edges found in vessels by choosing fabric with a distinguished pattern, picking out colors from feature furniture to add to individual pieces around the space, or mixing up soft fabrics which complement one another. Mix your textures but match your palette – just as if you were designing your home.

6 – Use Lighting for Atmosphere

Not all boats have walls. This can make the decorating a little difficult. If you have exposed industrial metal and wooden finishings to work with, add a little brass around and light it with LED strips , your choice in colors, or even specially made spot lighting, if you can afford it. Lighting adds atmosphere on board, and if you surround yourself with soft fabrics, you could feel right at home.

7 – Use Tapestries

Instead of spending a small fortune designing the interior of a boat which may or may not have walls to hang paper on, try tapestries, instead. Decorating the living spaces with soft fabrics takes the edge off all that industrial steel. Not only that, it adds to the insulation, which you really need on open water.

If it Floats, it Bloats!

If your new investment doesn’t have balance issues, engine issues, or leaks, you can get some life out of it yet. Especially if you followed our advice.

Boat Interior Restoration: How to Create a Dazzling Boat Interior?

1st may 2023 by samantha wilson.

Rightboat logo

If you’re thinking about Buying a Project Boat , then no doubt you will have started daydreaming about the beautiful interior you will be able to create for your boat. To transform a space from something mediocre and unloved into a beautiful, serene place where you can relax and enjoy your time on the sea is a true joy.

So where do you start when it comes to planning a full interior restoration?

Get Inspired

You might have a clear image of the colour scheme and décor you want in your new interior, but for those that need some inspirations take the time to plan what you want to do before you get started. There is an abundance of information and images out there and you could peruse some boat and sailing magazines, get hold of some books about decorating boat interiors or, most accessibly, look through images online on sites such as Pinterest or boating websites and see what jumps out at you. You could also visit local boat shows and see some boat interiors in real life. Once you have a clear picture of which design style speaks to you, keep a file and then make a plan about which items you will need to source.

Remember, the outside of boats tends to look very similar, but the interior is where you will be able to let your personality and style show, so don’t be afraid to be creative – this is where you will be spending a lot of your precious leisure time and you should love it.

Boat Interior Decorating Basics

While it might be tempting to treat your boat interior in the same way as you would your home, it’s vital to remember that practicality needs to remain the number one priority. Filling an interior space with trinkets and accessories might look appealing, but they will be nothing short of annoying the moment you get under way, and they start falling all over the place.

When sourcing your materials for your brand-new interior, there is a fine line that you need to follow. On the one hand, accessories intended specifically for boats can be eye-wateringly expensive and non- nautical products can be an excellent budget alternative. Storage boxes, galley items and accessories bought from high street shops can all be a way to save money. On the other hand, everything from upholstery to electronics, curtains and flooring needs to be suitable for marine use, and you will need to source and buy marine grade products. Even a boat’s interior will be subjected to water spray, and salt water is particularly corrosive and destructive to materials and equipment. While it might be tempting to buy cheaper, non-marine grade products it will be false economy when you need to replace them in a few years.

The last key rule to consider when decorating the interior of your boat is not buy breakable or fragile items for obvious reasons. It’s easy to forget, while bobbing gently in the marina, how much movement occurs on a boat on the open water, and anything that can fall over most likely will at some point. Avoid glass where possible so consider replacing picture frame glass with plastic, and having plastic drinking cups.

Boat Interior Restoration

With all this in mind it’s now time to take a look at what you can change which will have the biggest impact on your new restoration project;

Update your boat furnishings:

Nothing makes more of an impact on your boat’s interior than the soft furnishings. The seat covers, biminis and cushions will add a real bolt of colour, whether you opt for bold shades or more subtle hues. You could consider a leather interior too, or patterned fabrics. Think long and hard before committing to a colour because it will be the biggest statement you make. Many new boats will leave the shipyard with neutral tones to suit all tastes. It’s your boat though, so don’t be afraid to let your personality shine through – add bright splashes of colour for a fun and vibrant vibe, or choose a sleek black and grey colour scheme for a luxurious feel. Keep in mind the size of the space you’re restoring and don’t overcrowd small interiors with busy patterns or dark colours.

Be Creative with your Yacht’s Storage:

Storage space on most boats is at a premium, and you will need to design your interior carefully to make the most of every square inch. Clutter all over the place will make your boat feel smaller and more crowded, so aim for a minimalist style with everything you need neatly stowed away. It is not only a more pleasant environment but is practical for when you’re cruising too. Putting pull drawers in the steps adds a lot of useful small item storage, while the space under any berths is a valuable storage area too for items such as towels, bedding and clothes. You might even want to consider raising the beds to make the most of an otherwise wasted space. Invest in pretty storage boxes which fit with your colour scheme and integrate them into the overall design.

Revamp the Flooring:

Another big change you can make in your new interior is the flooring, and you’ll be amazed at the outcome. Marine vinyl flooring is a popular choice thanks to its durability and waterproofness, and it is also easy to clean. Marine vinyl comes in a dazzling array of colours and styles, so get creative and pull it into your overall design image. Again, avoid anything too busy or highly patterned in a small space or it can be overwhelming. If you prefer something softer underfoot (this is especially popular in colder climates) then marine grade carpets are up to the job and are available in a myriad of colours.

Don’t Forget about Window Coverings:

We’ve looked at soft furnishings, which would include curtains, but you have a whole host of options to choose from when it comes to window coverings. Blinds in various shades or wood tones can be an elegant addition to an interior, or you could opt for blackout curtains in the cabins for a better night’s sleep. If budget allows then motorized shades can be activated at the flick of a button and can be customised to your décor style.

Make it Yours:

Whether you’re planning to live on your boat , sail around the world , or spend weekends cruising inland waterways then you want the interior space to feel like home. Family photos, wall paintings or bedding can be brought from home to give a cosy and familiar feel. Accessories will help bring the whole design together and it’s where you can add your personal touch. Choose some decorative pillows to complement your upholstery (either matching or in contrasting colours) for evenings snuggled on the sofa, add some throw blankets – perhaps engraved with your boat’s name for added pizzazz – and don’t forget about lighting. Stark white lights are functional but not very atmospheric. Coloured LED lights (long-lasting and efficient) can be used to mark stairways or access ways, while softer lighting in the form of wall uplights or lamps in the cabins and saloon create a sophisticated and calming vibe.

Taking on an unloved boat and restoring it to its former glory can be enormously satisfying and give you a huge sense of achievement. 7 Trends in Sailing Yacht Interior Design

There’s some irony when it comes to looking at the hottest interior design trends for custom sailing yachts: much of the inspiration for today’s designs draw from the past – combined with modern innovation.

Interior designs that emphasize simplicity, balance, and natural materials are hardly revolutionary. Quite the opposite. But there is a new take and balance between old and new, iconic and innovative, that seems to provide the perfect balance for creating incredible interior spaces.

We’re exploring the top 7 trends in custom yacht design for 2023.

Natural Light and Connection Between Interior and Exterior Spaces

The use of larger windows is a trend that has been gaining popularity in yacht design in recent years, as yacht owners increasingly want to maximize their views of the surrounding environment and bring more natural light into their living spaces.

One way that yacht designers are incorporating larger windows is by using high-strength glass materials that can withstand the harsh marine environment. For example, tempered glass or laminated glass with multiple layers can provide the necessary strength and durability to withstand the wind, waves, and impact from flying debris.

In addition to using strong glass materials, yacht designers are also using innovative engineering techniques to maximize the size and placement of windows. Lightweight structural materials such as carbon fiber and titanium in the yacht’s construction, allow for larger windows without compromising the yacht’s structural integrity. In the photo of ANNA, above, the white-painted transverse structural knees are part of a carbon fabrication that strengthens the cabin and carries the mainsheet loads while blending into the classic joinery.

M ulti Functionality and Flex Spaces

The design for 68-ft CIRRUS comes from blending 40’s & 50’s era style. The large saloon is designed to provide long-term comfort and versatility with innovative vertical storage and a vaulted ceiling that includes panoramic angled glass as well as overhead skylights. Design by Stephens Waring under construction at Jim Betts Enterprises.

Owners are spending more time aboard their vessels and are adding to the list demands and programmatic needs. These include home-office, fitness centers, gourmet kitchens, and gathering places for family and friends to spend longer durations of time together.

Because space is at a premium on a yacht, designers are creating multi-functional spaces that can serve multiple purposes. For example, a seating area that can be converted into a bed or a dining table that can be lowered to create additional seating. Clever storage solutions are also being incorporated into yacht design to make the most of available space.

Old World Charm Meets Modern Sensibilities: Spirit of Tradition

Yacht designers have always had a particular reverence for heritage and history. The notion of heading out to sea conjures images of bygone eras past. Capturing that essence requires a balance that avoids becoming kitsch or contrived. While mid-century design may be considered the hot design trend of 2023, as designers steeped in a Spirit of Tradition design philosophy, we feel we’ve never left the genre.

Spirit of Tradition designs embody some historically identifiable link, particularly expressed in the shape and aesthetic exhibited in the design form of the hull and superstructure. Equally important, a Spirit of Tradition vessel must embrace modern development in materials, construction methods, mechanical systems and naval architecture science. Without the Spirit in development, we’re left with only Tradition.

Natural Materials

Yacht owners by their very nature are drawn to water and the natural world, so it makes sense to incorporate natural elements such as wood, stone, and other organic materials in design. These materials create a sense of warmth and connect the interior spaces to the natural surroundings.

As experts in wooden boat design, we have long touted the benefits of timber for structural elements. However, incorporation of hardwoods, as well as a growing trend in sustainable timbers, have become increasingly popular with owners looking to achieve aesthetic, durability, and sustainability objectives in interior design.

Other natural materials such as leather and wool are also being incorporated to add texture and comfort. These finishes not only look beautiful, but they are also durable to withstand the harsh marine environment.

Renovation and Restomods

old yacht interiors

The owner of Marilee (built in 1926) had the bold vision to create an interior that reflected the yacht’s century-long provenance while creating an open space below. The team worked with Paul Waring of Stephens Waring Yacht Design, to create a traditional and properly constructed interior with an updated layout for relaxed, modern day use. Photo credit: Alison Langley

The popularity of restomods has been well established in the world of classic cars, but it has only recently grown in popularity in the world of yachting. Fortunately, this is changing with plenty of success stories to point to. Restomods are ideal for owners looking for cost-effective transformations that maintain sentimental connections to vessels and deliver stunning customized spaces that can be more cost effective than new custom builds. They are also popular with owners who inherit family boats, but need more utility and comfort for future generations.

Historical interiors often lack the ergonomics and amenities most owners seek today. Good restoration projects embrace as much of the original charm and character of the original design as possible while improving comfort and livability. Upgrades to electrical systems, electronics and navigation, plumbing and propulsion systems are low hanging fruit. The interior design aesthetics requires a careful and complementary approach which honors the original character while updating comfort, utility, and aesthetics.

Flexible Spaces for a Crew Cabin

65-ft ANNA’s design includes a unique pocket door system. The design provides an easy way to expand square footage when the cabin is not needed or to private a comfortable extra cabin or crew quarters when extra hands or guests are aboard. Owners often struggle with the balance between the desire for a larger vessel with larger interior spaces and the challenge of maintaining a total vessel size (and cost) which is manageable.

As we get older the idea of managing and skippering our own vessel can come at the expense of enjoyment. Hiring crew alleviates some of the operational challenges and burdens, but it also means sharing interior space with others.

Flexible crew cabins provide a cost effective way to optimize space for when crew is and isn’t aboard. One solution is the installation of pocket doors on sleeping quarters. This converts square footage from private berths (crew quarters) to main salon gathering space when doors are opened and transforms the space to private rooms for guests and crew when needed.

Smart technology

old yacht interiors

Yacht owners are increasingly interested in incorporating smart technology into their vessels. This includes lighting, climate control, entertainment systems, and security features that can be controlled remotely. Smart technology allows yacht owners to control the environment on board and manage energy consumption more efficiently. It also adds an extra layer of security by allowing the owner to monitor their yacht from afar.

Over time, boats tend to start looking worn and outdated from the wear and tear of being exposed to the natural elements and the salty ocean waters. However, if you love your old boat and want to keep it, several options help you make your boat look new and refreshed. Regardless of size, updating, restoration, and cleaning, older boats enables you to transform your boat into the boat of your dreams.

Additionally, if you do not yet own a boat , there may be some benefits to buying an older boat (be sure to read Is Owning a Boat a Good Investment? ), fixing it up to your standards, and making it appear brand new.

Benefits of Making an Old Boat Look New

Restoring a boat.

One major benefit of restoring an older boat is that the cost is far less than if you were to buy a brand-new boat.

Restoring an older boat also helps preserve the boat’s history. A lot of older boat models hold a unique history or classic style. Write down any history, print out articles, or frame photos about the boat and keep them with the boat or hang them on the cabin walls to proudly display the boat’s unique history.

Another benefit of restoring an older boat is customizing it to include what you want. Instead of buying pre-manufactured designs or paying extra out of pocket for upgrades, you can choose which upgrades you like and which ones you do not need.

How Do You Restore Color on a Boat?

Over time, salt water, sun, and normal wear and tear can leave a boat’s finish looking dull. When your boat no longer looks as bright and colorful as the day you first launched it, it can look new again using various restorative materials and products while continuing with general maintenance and care.

Before starting to work on restoring the color of your boat, it is best to wash and clean it . If the boat has not been cleaned in a while, you may be amazed at how fresh and bright it looks once all the dirt, grime, salt, grease, and ocean debris are removed.

If not routinely cleaned, boats can experience premature aging, appearing dull and dingy. Use proper cleaners designed for each part of your boat, including fiberglass and aluminum.

Waxing boat exterior.

If cleaning the boat is not enough to restore its original luster, the next step is to wax and buff the surface. A power buffer can help remove stubborn stains, and the wax can help brighten colors.

How Do I Update the Interior of my Boat?

Updating the interior of a boat can help give it a fresh look, often making it appear new again. When wanting to update the look of your boat’s interior, there are several options available:

 • You need to start with deep cleaning the interior, getting into all the cracks and crevices.
 • Remove all mildew, salt crust, and clean up dirty upholstery, floors, ceilings, walls, and countertops.
 • Wash all hatches and windows, and treat all wood with the appropriate oil, varnish, and wax.

You can also install more interior lights to brighten things up or swap old light bulbs for newer, brighter LED bulbs. LED rope lights are also a great addition to changing a boat’s interior look while adding light. Places to install lights include under counters, walkways, between panels, and around hatches.

Boat interior bedding.

Changing out old sheets and comforters with new, higher-quality bedding will make sleeping areas cozier but also help freshen up the boat’s interior. It may even help to change the bed for a new memory foam mattress or add a mattress pad to prevent condensation and increase comfort when in the cabin. Another option is to reupholster the boat’s interior or change the look by adding new throw pillows and blankets. A brightly colored rug can also change the look, refreshing the area without costing too much.

Freshening up the head by adding color and brightly colored towels can quickly transform a dark bathroom. A decorative wall-mounted soap dispenser and air freshener can also help change the look and feel of the boat’s bathroom.

Changing things out in the galley area of the interior can help create a sparkling new look. Replace rusted and dull faucets, add colorful dish towels, pick non-breakable dishware and glasses with fun patterns, install over-the-sink chopping board and stove covers, and install custom racks for storage.

Finally, add fresh paint to the walls, then hang mirrors, art, photos, and souvenirs to create a beautiful space. Privacy curtains also help add color while keeping the sunlight out for afternoon naps and preventing nosey neighbors from looking in.

Ultimately, have fun with your boat’s interior by adding color and items to personalize it to you and your boating journeys.

Should I Hire a Restoration Company to Fix Up My Boat?

Restoring a boat can be very time-consuming and requires several unique tools and expertise. If you are comfortable with your restoration skills and have the means to repair your boat on your own, it might be a fun project to undertake. However, if you lack the required skills, do not have the time, or do not have the proper tools, it might be good to hire a restoration company to do the work for you. The company you hire will do everything to your specifications and help make your boat look new again.

While waiting for your boat restoration project to be complete, take time to get out on the water on a local boat rental. Boatsetter offers boat rentals, fishing charters, and captained tours helping you get on the water while waiting for your boat to be ready to set sail.

YACHT INTERIOR DESIGN

With strong experience of life aboard yachts and historic styles we design period interiors that are faithful to the original style and which offer modern day functionality.

YACHT EXTERIOR DESIGN YACHT INTERIOR DESIGN

LUXURY YACHT INTERIOR DESIGN

From preliminary layouts through to final production drawings, our interior yacht designs are based on a clear understanding of on-board operations. These will reconcile the competing requirements of owners and guests; crew and regulations. This detailed approach allows a yacht to fulfil the full range of requirements of all who will sail in her. This translates into owner and guest enjoyment and an effective crew living and working environment that allow crew members to succeed in their area of expertise and deliver a first class service to Owners and their guests.

CLASSIC YACHT INTERIOR DESIGN

With in-depth experience of life aboard contemporary yachts and a detailed knowledge of historic interior design styles we design period interiors that are faithful to the original style yet which offer modern day functionality.

With classic yachts many period solutions remain relevant today, but equally innovative approaches are required to incorporate modern services and amenities. Our designs acknowledge the often competing criteria of comfort, storage, security and owner requirements in order to deliver quality solutions that allow guests and crew to enjoy the most satisfying and rewarding environments. Our extensive knowledge and archive of classic yacht interior designs allows us to restore and recreate period interiors that are authentic to the original design. Our material choices and finishes, as well as fittings and fabrics, all contribute to creating the right period feel which may be young and vibrant or formal.

SERVICE AREAS

To respond to the catering requirements our designs will typically include galleys, pantries, other food preparation areas, cold stores, dry provision storage and wine stores. Similar attention is given to laundry facilities and storage, waste management, workshops and general storage areas. It is the design of these ‘behind the scenes’ areas and the flow between them that allows crew to deliver first class service.

What is Boat Interior Design?

Boat or Nautical interior design is the art and science of creating functional, breathtaking living spaces within the boundaries of a watercraft. It involves carefully planning and arranging elements such as furniture, cabinetry, textiles, and lighting to optimize space utilization with maximum comfort and style. Boat interior designers must consider the unique challenges posed by marine environments, including limited space, fluctuating temperatures, and exposure to moisture and salt water. They often incorporate nautical themes, colors, and materials to create a life-at-sea ambiance.

Boat Interior Ideas - Architects Insight

Boat Interior Ideas for Seafarers

If you’re looking for some sailboat interior inspiration, we’ve put together a list of some boat design ideas for you:

1. Maximize Vertical Space

Make efficient use of the vertical dimensions of your boat by installing floor-to-ceiling shelving units or hanging organizers in the cabin area for storing essentials like books, kitchenware, and personal belongings. These storage solutions not only help keep essentials organized but also free up valuable floor space for easy movement onboard.

2. Multifunctional Furniture

Invest in versatile, minimalist furniture pieces that serve multiple purposes and allow you to make the most out of limited space without compromising on functionality. Consider options like sofa beds with built-in storage compartments or folding tables for your saloon area. A dining table that doubles as a workspace, or ottomans with hidden storage is great for lounge or seating areas.

3. Storage Solutions

Smart storage solutions such as under-floor compartments in sleeping quarters can help stow away bulky items such as bedding or luggage. Wall-mounted cabinets and pull-out drawers are perfect for the galley or kitchen area, keeping cookware, utensils, and provisions easily accessible yet out of sight. These small boat interior ideas contribute to a clutter-free environment.

4. Bespoke Cabinets

Design custom cabinets for minimalist organization tailored to your boat’s layout and specific storage needs. From storage solutions in the cockpit for boating gear to specialized compartments in the saloon for electronics or entertainment systems, custom-built cabinets ensure efficient use of space throughout the vessel.

5. Pick a Nautical Color Palette

We all love colors! Choose a calm color palette inspired by nautical interior design. Pick subtle shades like baby blue, pristine white, soft gray, and sun-kissed sand or vibrant colors like bright blue, green, and turquoise. These calming hues are the perfect base colors that evoke the serenity of the sea and create a light atmosphere onboard. Complement these hues by adding accents of navy, red, or yellow to tie the color palette together and enhance the maritime theme.

6. Accentuate with Marine Motifs

Include marine decorating concepts to add personality to your boat’s interior. Consider using decorative items such as marine motifs, anchor-patterned bedding, cushions, rope accents, or seashell-shaped ornaments to infuse a touch of maritime charm into your living and dining space and reflect your passion for seafaring adventures.

7. Use of Mirrors

Another interesting pick on our list of boat interior ideas is the use of mirrors. Place mirrors strategically to maximize natural light and create the illusion of a larger space. Positioning mirrors opposite windows or in narrow passageways such as cabins or saloons can help reflect light throughout the interior, making it feel brighter and more spacious.

8. Luxurious Upholstery

Choose upholstery fabrics and materials that are specially designed for marine environments. Go for options that are resistant to moisture, UV rays, and saltwater exposure, and can withstand harsh conditions of life at sea while maintaining their appearance and comfort in high-traffic areas such as the cockpit or saloon.

9. Textures and Textiles

Layer different textures such as soft wool rugs, comfy velvet cushions, and woven throws to add warmth and coziness to your boat interior ideas . Mixing textures adds richness, making the space feel comfortable for onboard relaxation.

10. Natural Elements

Incorporate natural elements like wood accents in the cabinetry and furnishings throughout the boat. Bamboo furniture, or stone countertops in the galley area add a touch of natural luxury and texture. These organic materials add warmth and bring the outdoors inside creating a harmonious connection with the marine environment.

11. Multilayering

Layer up your interior elements using the right furniture, décor, and accessories. For example, for maritime living space ideas, place smooth leather or rough jute sofas with knitted throws while glossy ceramics can sit on a smart coffee table positioned on a woven rug. This keeps the eye moving by creating a rich and multi-dimensional space.

12. Custom Mattresses

Indulge in custom-made mattresses or mattress toppers that are tailored to fit the unique shapes and dimensions of your boat’s sleeping berths. Engineered for optimal support and relaxation, these bespoke mattresses ensure a restful night’s sleep amidst the gentle sway of the ocean, elevating your overall onboard experience.

13. Maximize Natural Light

For your boat interior ideas , flood up your space with sunlight to enhance the luminous allure of your interior. Install large windows, elegant skylights, or intricately crafted portholes to maximize natural light penetration. Natural light not only brightens up the space but also creates a connection with the surrounding seascape, improving the overall feel onboard.

14. Lighting

Install reading lamps, or adjustable spotlights to provide focused illumination for nighttime activities. Under-cabinet lights are used mainly in the galley or kitchen area for cooking, reading, or working onboard. These refined lighting solutions ensure you have enough light wherever and whenever you need it. Ambient lighting features such as LED strips, recessed lighting, or wall sconces create unforgettable moments amidst the enchanting beauty of the open sea. These atmospheric lighting solutions set the mood for different activities and occasions onboard.

15. Nautical Art

For yacht décor ideas, incorporate nautical-themed artwork that resonates with your love for the sea. Approach local artisans or talented artists who specialize in marine-inspired creations, such as seascapes, sailboats, or underwater scenes. Whether it’s a custom painting, a sculpture, or a beautiful wall mural, nautical artwork completes the boat interior by adding a bit of you to your yacht’s living spaces. Go ahead and celebrate your passion for maritime adventures!

Final Words

In conclusion, these boat interior ideas offer a roadmap for renovating your vessel’s interior. Optimizing your boat or yacht’s interior design is a journey of creativity, functionality, and personal expression. With careful planning, attention to detail, innovative storage solutions, versatile furniture pieces, and thoughtful design elements, you can transform your onboard space into a luxurious retreat that reflects your lifestyle and enhances your maritime adventures.

7 Unique Boat Interior Upholstery Ideas...

7 unique boat interior upholstery ideas.

Boat interior upholstery

No matter how much you might try, your boat won’t look and feel like it’s “yours” without the right interior upholstery. And while a nice coat of paint might make a boat look good on the outside, it’s the upholstery that you’ll spend your time with. You might as well get it right! That’s why we’ve put together a list of seven unique boat interior upholstery ideas to liven up your boating experience!

Idea #1: The Vintage Look

“Vintage” boat interior upholstery is great for casual speed boats and fishing boats and often includes plenty of vinyl. A vintage look is great because you can use just about any color you like, including bold primary colors or pastels. You can also have fun with a vintage-style steering wheel that completely changes how it feels to steer.

Idea #2: The Ski-Boat Look

A more “athletic,” and water-proof look, the “Ski-Boat” style means using practical upholstery that’s highly resistant to water, which means it serves a practical purpose as well as an aesthetic one. Here you can incorporate stripes, athletic logos, and keep things sleek and modern.

Idea #3: Laid-Back

This is ideal for pontoon boats, especially since the aesthetic and functionality of the upholstery will so closely match the type of experience you can get from a pontoon. Laid-back upholstery should include wide seating and even practicality—for example, having cupholders ingrained into the upholstery itself will promote a smooth look that’s great for relaxing while out on the lake.

Idea #4: The Contrasting Look

Your boat’s hull is something you need to take into account when redoing the upholstery. Why? Because if you hit the water in a largely green boat and you redo your upholstery in a clashing color, you should be aware of the overall effect it will have on its aesthetic. But you can also choose upholstery colors that deliberately contrast with the outer portion. Try using complementing colors like blue and red, or blue and orange. These can combine for a sporty look that upgrades the entire appearance of your boat—not just the inside.

Idea #5: Subtle & Modern

Many people opt for big, bold colors in their boat interior upholstery when they redo their boats. The problem with this approach is that it can sometimes feel like committing to a particular look. A subtle and modern approach might not be as flashy, but a more minimalistic look (including subdued colors and solid patterns) will tend to hold up better over time.

Idea #6: Sleek & Modern

“Subtle” not doing it for you? You can up the style factor by including some sleek designs with the upholstery including color contrasting and sharp features including stripes. A sleek and modern look can be a lot of fun especially for speed boats, where the style echoes what the boat itself is capable of.

Idea #7: A Mix!

Exciting yacht design doesn’t require reinventing the wheel. But a fresh view always helps. That’s why more yacht owners are looking for land-based architects and designers for their new build and refit interiors, preferring a cross-pollination of ideas over the tried and true.

The first owner to shy away from the traditional yacht designer set was billionaire Lukas Lundin, who tasked Italian architect Cristina Gherardi Benardeau to design the interior of the 274-foot Savannah. The Feadship, launched in 2015, is largely remembered as the first superyacht with a hybrid propulsion package. But the interior is just as radical.

And more recently, the architects unveiled concept renderings for Oneiric, a proposed catamaran in collaboration with Italian shipyard Rossinavi.

From skyscraper to sea, here are six yachts designed by mainstream architects.

Architect Roberto Palomba has been designing houses for decades. His Milan-based studio, Palomba Serafini Associati, includes the Italian Consulate in Detroit, home décor and even tableware, among its past projects. His first yacht is the Amer F100, which features a unique “Glass Cabin” as the main salon. It was designed in partnership with Ludovica Serafini. “My aim was to change some standard boat elements to create something completely different,” Palomba told Robb Report during the yacht’s world debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival. “Certainly, our perspective offers a fresh look, an architectural vision rooted in the world of architecture and interior design, translated into the realm of yacht design.” The Glass Cabin is an architectural glass box that encases the main salon and formal dining area with windows that are larger than other yachts with similar dimensions. The garden creates openness, light and a continuous connection with the sea. Continuing the theme, reflective surfaces are used on the walls and ceiling across all social areas to bring more light in, while stairs joining the main deck to the bridge are topped by more glass, opening the heart of the yacht to blue skies.

Continuing the theme, reflective surfaces are used on the walls and ceiling across all social areas to bring more light in, while stairs joining the main deck to the bridge are topped by more glass, opening the heart of the yacht to blue skies.

Co-founder Sanjit Manku took the design brief and ran with it, eschewing traditional yachting layouts for high-volume and big sea views. Variations on the established interiors include lofty 8.9-foot-tall ceilings, open-plan cabin layouts (where the bathrooms are on display) and locating the owner’s salon—more akin to an observation lounge—to the upper deck where the captains’ wheelhouse is traditionally located. “We drew on our restaurant design experience to create an ambience and furniture that is practical yet opulent,” Manku told Robb Report. “The dining chairs have ski feet that make it easy for guests to slide in and out, and we incorporated flattering lighting rather than ceiling spotlights.” The end result is a stunning, personalized interior that is unique in yachting.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

old yacht interiors

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

old yacht interiors

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

old yacht interiors

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

old yacht interiors

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

old yacht interiors

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

old yacht interiors

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages: 379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.
