Croatia catamaran charters.

There are several reasons for catamarans’ growing popularity in Croatia, one of which is their benefits in comfortable cruising. Catamarans are stable and graceful on the water and we therefore often recommend them for people who suffer from seasickness .

Their efficient design makes them noticeably faster than most sailing monohulls, and their shallow draft is a significant advantage, allowing for navigating in shallow waters and the option to anchor much closer to the beach.

A Catamaran Croatia also has the advantage of having roomy living quarters making them ideal for corporate team-building events, family charters, or a summer vacation with a group of friends.

Croatia sailing yacht charters.

If you wish to sail Croatia, you might consider a sailing yacht. Today, modern sailing yachts offer similar amenities to a motor yacht – except for the speed, which is lower, but so is the price! And, of course, it relies more on the wind, which can be both an advantage and a limitation. While motor sailors can achieve an average cruising speed of 15-20 knots , wind-powered sailboats usually cruise at 8-12 knots when the sailing conditions are good.

Croatia has  small tides throughout the season—1-2 feet depending on the region, so the deeper draft of a sailing yacht is not an issue.

Based on our experience, large groups or families with kids often prefer the soundless and relaxing sailing experience  in the Dalmatian islands.

Croatia Luxury Yacht Charters

When we talk about luxury yachts here, we refer to larger motor yachts or superyachts with high-end amenities and large crews, often with specialized staff such as fitness instructors, massage therapists, and more.

Think Jacuzzi , Spa rooms, Saunas, onboard Gyms and Cinema rooms, large selections of water toys with one or multiple jet skis , fully stocked bars and dancefloors, and we could go on.

Still, the price range within the luxury yacht Croatia category is quite wide, starting around €50,000 per week and reaching into the millions for a high-end mega yacht.

Croatia Large Group Charters (12-71 Guests)

If you’re looking for a yacht charter that can accommodate a large group ( more than 12 guests ), Croatia is the place for you!!

Croatia’s favorable legislation, which allows for larger groups on charters (more than 12 guests), is a rarity within the EU !! -i.e., Greece has a limit of 12 people per charter for all non-cruise ships. And this is the norm.

When it comes to large group yacht charters in Croatia, the options are plentiful. Most charters can accommodate between 12-20 people , but it’s not difficult to find a charter for 30 people, and there are even options for more. For instance, yachts like VARIETY VOYAGER can accommodate a whole 71 guests!

Louis was great from beginning to end and walked me through the whole process. He helped me find a great boat that fit within our time and cost preferences. He explained the differences between the different builds and the pros and cons. Once we selected the boat, he explained and walked me through the whole booking process and answered all my questions. Finally, he checked in with me before, during, and after the charter to make sure everything met our expectations. I can’t recommend Louis enough if you are planning a charter, and I will definitely be in touch for our next trip!

Hire and insurance of the yacht

Crew wages and crew food

Fuel for 4 hours of engine use daily

24/7 generator usage

Tender transfers and tender-operated watersports (donut, waterski, wakeboard, kneeboard)

Access to recreational and watersports equipment

Wi-Fi access

All other expenses are an additional expense to the charterer. The additional expenses during a charter are paid for by the ‘Advanced Provisioning Allowance’, known as the ‘APA’.

The APA comprises 30% of the Charter Fee. The APA is transferred to the boat before the charter starts, so the crew can provision according to your specific requirements before you embark.

This allowance covers various costs including, but not limited to, food and beverages for the Charter Party, port fees, national park entrances, fuel for Personal Watercraft, shipping agents’ fees, custom fees, charter licenses (if cruising in Montenegro or Italy), and other requested services like hiring special equipment, shoreside transport, and excursions during the charter.

Throughout the charter, the captain diligently maintains records of expenses. At the end of the charter, the Captain will present you with a fully itemised statement of the APA account, with receipts. If the account is in credit, the balance will of course be returned to you. If it is in debit, the balance must be settled in cash or, with the Captain’s agreement, by wire transfer.

VAT is due in the country where the charter starts.

Croatia: 13%

Delivery Fee

If your charter begins away from the yacht's home port, an Owner may apply a delivery fee. This fee accounts for the fuel and, at times, the time invested in relocating the yacht to and from its home port to the start location of your charter. We strive to recommend yachts within your desired area to avoid these fees. In cases where they are unavoidable, we negotiate on your behalf to minimize these costs.

Freedom typically departs from Split area in Croatia, occasionally accommodating departures from Dubrovnik if the preceding charter involved a one-way trip to Dubrovnik.

Crew Gratuity

Notably, tips are not included in the charter price. They are a voluntary gesture of appreciation for the service. Typically ranging from 10% to 20% of the charter price, tips are given at your discretion and paid to the captain at the charter's conclusion. The captain then evenly distributes these gratuities among the crew.

Licences and Restrictions

Personal Watercraft

In most countries, a license is required to operate personal watercraft (waverunner, jetski or other mechanically propelled watercraft) to comply with insurance and legal criteria. There may also be a minimum age requirement – rules vary between countries. It is your responsibility to ensure that any guests wishing to use the personal watercraft have an appropriate license.

These time frames present a combination of benefits, including the full operational capacity of tour operators and hotels, a pleasantly warm climate, and more manageable crowds, especially when contrasted with the peak season.

From June to September is the High Season

To make the most of watersports like swimming, snorkelling, scuba diving, and sailing in Croatia, plan your visit between June and September . During these months, the weather is consistently warm and sunny, with temperatures ranging from comfortable to hot, peaking in July and August. If you prefer a hotter climate for sunbathing on the deck and swimming from the boat, summer is the ideal time.

Keep in mind that this period constitutes the peak tourist season . Popular destinations and attractions can be quite crowded, particularly in coastal areas and islands.

These months are perfect for various water-based activities due to warm sea temperatures and calm conditions . Swimming, snorkelling, scuba diving, sailing, and other water sports are popular choices, making it an ideal time for beach enthusiasts.

Summer in Croatia hosts a multitude of festivals, cultural events, and outdoor concerts, providing an opportunity to immerse yourself in local culture, music, and traditions. Nightlife peaks during the summer, especially in destinations like Pag, Hvar, Brač, Dubrovnik, and Split.

May and October are Shoulder season

još slika 2.jpg

For a budget-friendly experience in Croatia, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons, specifically in early Spring (May and June) or late Autumn (September to November). These times offer a range of affordable activities. However, keep in mind that certain experiences, dining options, and accommodations may be limited.

During the shoulder season, the weather is generally pleasant. In May and September, temperatures are milder , making outdoor activities and sightseeing comfortable. The sea remains warm enough for swimming and water sports, while the weather is conducive to exploring historical sites, hiking in national parks, and enjoying outdoor dining.

Booking sailing boats during the shoulder seasons is often easier compared to the summer months, with a broader range of options and potentially more reasonable prices .

The shoulder seasons offer an excellent opportunity to explore Croatia's islands in a more family-friendly environment , characterized by fewer crowds and a relaxed atmosphere. Some events and festivals take place during these seasons, offering a unique glimpse into Croatian life, and showcasing local culture, music, and traditions.

Winter is the Low season

Exploring Croatia during the low season, from November to April , provides a unique opportunity for a more nature-focused experience.

During this time, many establishments close, leading to limited choices for boat charters, attractions, and activities. On the other hand, it is perfect for early booking activities and the flexibility to choose dates before the peak season rush.

Historic towns take on a cosy ambience, and cultural sites become more accessible without the usual crowds. While the Adriatic Sea may be too chilly for swimming, it provides a serene backdrop.

Sailing Conditions in Croatia

The Adriatic Sea , the n orthernmost part of the Mediterranean, spans from the Strait of Otranto to the Veneto region in Italy, boasting over 1,300 islands along the Croatian coast .

sailing guide 4 uredene.jpg

The sea's salinity averages 38.30 per mill , influenced by the Po River and lower than the Mediterranean. Sea temperatures fluctuate annually, reaching 22 to 25°C in summer.

Waves are relatively small due to the Croatian coast's configuration, ensuring safe sailing .

Weather conditions are influenced by the general Mediterranean weather , with light to moderate winds prevailing until June, calm in July and August, and stronger winds returning in September.

Winds in Croatia

The Adriatic Sea is known for distinct wind patterns that influence its weather and sailing conditions, including Bura, Jugo, Maestral, Lebić, and Levant.

  • Bura winds from the northeast or east-northeast bring a cold, dry wind often accompanied by clear skies.
  • Jugo winds from the southeast are warm and moist , bringing humid conditions and occasional rain, often associated with unstable weather.
  • Maestral winds from the northwest are a daytime sea breeze during summer , providing cooler and pleasant conditions, particularly along the Croatian coast.
  • Levant winds from the east are moderate to strong easterly winds bringing some rainfall, more common in the southern Adriatic during transitional seasons.
  • Lebić winds from the southwest are warm and moist, potentially causing stormy weather and heavy rain , mainly in the western part of the Adriatic, more common in the fall and winter.

Navigating the pricing complexities of a yacht charter can be overwhelming for first-timers. This guide simplifies budget planning by highlighting key considerations.

The roots of viticulture in Croatia run deep, with evidence dating back 2500 years, showcasing the cultivation of vines and wine processing. Today, Croatia stands as a country with a thriving wine culture, where half of the vineyards are dedicated to personal use, emphasizing the genuine appreciation for wine among Croatians.

Croatia boasts over 130 registered grape varieties, many of which are indigenous to the country, contributing to the allure of Croatian wines for those seeking distinct flavours and characteristics.

Croatia is divided into four distinct wine regions, each with its own unique features, challenges, and regulations. Slavonija region is for white wines with full flavour, fruity aromas, and medium-to-high alcohol content, featuring the prominent Graševina variety. Dalmatia region is steeped in tradition, producing red wines like Plavac, Plavac mali, Crljenak, Babić, Lasina, and Pavina . Modern producers are enhancing the wine quality with contemporary techniques. Istria and Kvarner regions are characterized by a blend of mild Mediterranean and colder continental climates, showcasing a mix of continental and Mediterranean grape varieties.

The Mediterranean diet, recognized as one of the healthiest globally and listed by UNESCO since 2013, draws inspiration from the culinary practices of Mediterranean Sea communities.

Centred on plant-based cooking with fruits, vegetables, fish , meat, whole grains, and olive oil, the diet limits saturated fats, sugar, and refined foods. It encourages fish consumption, favours olive oil, and incorporates regional variations across Mediterranean countries.

In Croatia, the Mediterranean diet is deeply ingrained in the culture, notably on the islands of Hvar and Brač. Recognized by UNESCO, traditional Croatian dishes like 'mišina' cheese, Hrapoćuša cake, makaruni desserts , and Pag cheese contribute to preserving the region's culinary heritage.

Welcome to Activity Yachting Holidays

Current Specials

We specialise in tailor made sailing holidays in central Croatia, offering Learn to Sail, Flotilla Sailing, and Bareboat Charter Holidays, with options for everyone from beginners to experienced sailors

For singles and couples our specialty is our learn to sail a yacht holiday, where you share a yacht with others and a skipper. this is a fun holiday, where you sail around the islands as part of flotilla, while learning as you go along., families or groups who are beginners go on a yacht on their own with a skipper, without any sharing and sail as part of the same flotilla., holidays can be taken just as a learn to sail fun holiday or can be used to get internationally recognised crew and skipper certification., groups, couples or families with their own skipper, that do not need training then take a yacht without one of our skippers and still sail with the flotilla., our bareboat/flotilla programme offers an excellent range of yachts and catamarans from 30 to 55 ft, suitable for more experienced sailors. these yachts are then free to come and go from the flotilla as people please making this a very popular option., on a number of weeks during the season we have a share a yacht programme for singles or couples, who can already sail, and who do not need to be on a yacht with one of our skippers but who just want to share with others rather than having to arrange their own crew and hire a yacht on their own..

TripAdvisor

Our Learn to Sail, Skipper Training, Flotilla and Bareboat charter holidays in Croatia started at the end of April and will operate on all weeks until the end of October. To date most people travelling have come from mainland Europe, as travel for them is easier, but from mid July onwards we look forward to welcoming many more people from countries like the UK and Ireland, which is where many of our clients come from.

Flights are now all operating and entering Croatia involves following straightforward testing guidelines or providing evidence of vaccination, and the details of what is required for arrivals from all countries, can be viewed on the Croatia government web site here (opens in a new tab).

While in Croatia all accepted protocols for protection against the spread of Covid like enhanced cleaning, social distancing, wearing of face masks in shops, etc are followed. Restaurants and shops are all open and in general as sailing activities are mostly outdoor, it is regarded as a low risk activity and holidays can operate with minimal disruption.

For people requiring testing before they depart after a holiday these are easily arranged in Croatia and we are adapting our flotilla routes to ensure that people can all book tests at the appropriate time. A rapid test with the result in English costs about 250Kuna while a PCR test costs about 600kuna. Further guidance on test centres in Croatia are available here

Anyone that is considering travelling and has additional questions can always contact us for a chat about the latest updates here
