Fantastic experience! Fred was an amazing host and he was very accomodating and made a great itinerary but was guided by what we wanted and changed it according to the weather when it got a bit too windy! Such a great experience I couldn’t recommend this enough!!!

We had an amazing 3 hours with Harry. It was my daughters 18th birthday, 5 of us in total and everything was amazing. We went around the harbour, stopped off so the kids could jump off and swim in the sea. Harry even bought her a birthday cake! Everything was perfect from booking, right until we got off at the Boat house Balmoral Beach, thank you so much for making my a daughters 18th so memorable 😊

Gather the Materials  

Before you begin, make sure you have all of the necessary materials to complete the job. This includes all of the necessary tools and equipment rentals. For wood for the flooring, you will need one dominant color of wood to use in the center section of the floor, plus different wood for accent strips, the border itself, and the perimeter. Some people choose to add tiles to the corners of the perimeter for an additional layer of color and texture. If you choose to use tiles, you will need those as well.   

Map Out the Design  

Before you start actually installing the hardwood floor, you will need to decide what kind of design you want to have. It helps to use a large piece of paper for the center of the floor and then experiment with strips of wood you plan to use for the other parts of the flooring to get the exact look you want. After you know what kind of design you want, cut your pieces of wood accordingly using a table saw.   

Build Out Your Flooring  

To install the flooring, start in the center and work outward until all of the pieces are in place. You will need floor adhesive and finishing nails to keep the boards in place. The Magic Hour Light of Sydney Yard

Sydney Jones Yard (1856-1909) is considered to the first professional artist to settle in the new community of Carmel-by-the-Sea.  He was a quiet, contemplative painter who loved to depict stands of majestic oak trees in the fleeting minutes just after the sun had set, when there was just a rosy glow left in the sky.   Yard was one of the few prominent Northern California painters who worked almost exclusively in the watercolor medium.  His works were in the Tonalist tradition of George Inness and William Keith, where the emphasis was on painting modest, Barbizon-influenced scenes, rendered in warm tones that illuminated nature’s quiet little corners of beauty.  Yard’s atmospheric watercolors were of the eucalyptus, oaks and the cypress that were nestled in the hills around his studios, first in San Jose, in Oakland and then in Carmel, just a short walk from the ocean.

The artist was born in Rockford, Illinois in 1855, the son of William and Mary Jones Yard, who had moved there from New Jersey.  His first artistic mentor was an artist named George J. Robinson (1809-1899), a Scottish-born regional portrait and landscape painter who would have been able to give him solid instruction.  Yard is also said to have studied in Chicago, possibly in the early days of the Chicago Art Institute, which was founded in 1879. He married early in Illinois, and a daughter named Bessie was born in 1881.  Yard is credited with studying in New York as well, and then with Harry Sutton Palmer (1853-1933), a very adept English watercolorist.  Now, it has been thought that Yard worked with Palmer in England, but we now know that Palmer exhibited in New York and later came to stay with family in San Jose, California, so it seems more likely that he worked with the atmospheric landscape painter in the Golden State.

After his initial studies in the east, Yard moved west to California sometime in the 1880s. Having learned the photography business, he opened a pair of photography studios in San Jose and Palo Alto with fellow artist Arthur Putnam Hill (1853-1922), who had a portrait studio in San Jose as far back as 1878.  The business partnership seems to have lasted until 1895. By the following year Yard was confident enough in his artwork to exhibit in the San Francisco Art Association’s spring and winter exhibitions.

By 1897 Yard was the owner of a photography and art studio in San Jose.  He exhibited his paintings in San Francisco again that year. The works were landscapes drawn from the hills, valleys and farmlands around San Jose.  By 1898 he had discovered the Monterey Peninsula, as he exhibited works of Pacific Grove in an exhibition at the Century Club in San Francisco.  In July of 1898 he married Fannie M. Estabrook (b. 1856) in San Jose.  The following June he obtained a passport to travel to Europe for a year, but whether this was a belated honeymoon or a trip to further his artistic pursuits is not known.

Yard continued to live and paint in San Jose until 1904, when he moved his residence to Oakland and rented a studio on the famous Montgomery Street studio block in San Francisco and began teaching. Late in 1905 he began building a rustic home  on Lincoln, near Seventh in Carmel, just up the path from the coast, joining his friend Arthur Vachell and his student Laura Maxwell in the new community.  A few years later he had added a studio to the home and over the eaves he had Zola’s famous quote inscribed: “Art is a corner of nature seen through a temperament.”

In 1906, Yard’s lost the contents of his studio in the San Francisco Earthquake and like many artists soon found an out-of-town dealer to sell his works, in this case, Anderson Galleries of Chicago.  However, San Francisco’s economy soon rebounded and artists like Yard had to work hard to keep up with the demand to provide paintings to decorate all the newly rebuilt homes.

After his home was finished in Carmel, Yard began participating in the life of the little art colony and the peninsula.  He was not part of the opening exhibition of the new Del Monte Art Gallery in 1907, but after a few months he was showing his scenes of the golden meadows, trees and sand dunes of the peninsula there.  Yard was an active member of the Carmel Arts and Crafts Club and was an active participant in their eccentric fundraisers, wearing costumes and beating a drum in their marching band.

Yard exhibited at the 1908 exhibitions of the Oakland Free Library and the Berkley Art Associations and had a solo exhibition at the prestigious Vickery, Atkins and Torrey Gallery, which was well received in the San Francisco press.  Unfortunately, the meditative painter’s career was cut short when he collapsed and died from a heart attack in front of the Carmel post office.  Copyright, 2004-2011, Jeffrey Morseburg, not to be reproduced without specific written permission of the author.
