One globe, one ocean

The Vendée Globe aims to use the media impact of the event to raise public awareness of ocean conservation throughout the round-the-world race. By sailing around the world, the Vendée Globe sailors are highlighting the fragility of our oceans faced with global warming. They are direct witnesses to the changes underway, particularly around Antarctica, a region that is under particular threat.

Soft mobility

The Vendée Globe adventure doesn't start in Les Sables d'Olonne! It starts from home, by using a low-carbon mode of transport to get to the race village. The organisers have set up a mobility committee to bring together all the public and private players involved and propose soft mobility solutions for getting to the village.

What is the Vendée Globe?

The Vendée Globe is a single-handed, non-stop, non-assisted round-the-world sailing race that takes place every four years. It is contested on IMOCA monohulls, which are 18 metres long. The skippers set off from Les Sables-d'Olonne in Vendée and sail around 45,000 kilometres around the globe, rounding the three legendary capes (Good Hope, Leeuwin and finally Cape Horn) before returning to Les Sables d'Olonne. The race has acquired an international reputation, attracting skippers from all over the world. Beyond the competition, it is above all an incredible human adventure.

Globetrotting sailors depart DC for final leg of the Clipper Race with firework fanfare

by Noah Shubert

The Clipper Round the World Race continues on June 25 with an evening celebration hosted at The Wharf. (7News)

WASHINGTON (7News) — For over a week now, The Wharf in Washington, D.C. has housed a collection of boats belonging to some of the toughest people on Earth, and tonight they set sail again.

Even with a large red archway reading "Welcome to the Clipper Race Fanzone" adorning the Waterfront walkway, passersby who chose not to stop in may not truly comprehend the sheer gravity of the event.

Since June 17, the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race , a 40,000 nautical mile (NM) boat race circumnavigating the globe, has docked in the local D.C. port for the first time.

Team Washington, DC currently sits in tenth place.

The 11 teams participating in the race have enjoyed an eight-day respite in the Nation's Capital after concluding the second part of the race's seventh leg, a 1,990 NM stretch from the Flamenco & Shelter Bay Marinas in Panama. The seventh leg originated in Seattle, Washington before the Central American stop.

The eight-legged in totality race began Sept. 3, 2023, when boats set sail from Portsmouth, U.K. Along their journey, the clippers have docked in ports worldwide including Spain, Uruguay, South Africa, Australia, Vietnam, China, Panama, and the United States.

June 25 marks the start of the race's final leg, "The Atlantic Homecoming," a 3,823NM transatlantic odyssey stopping in Oban, Scotland before the ultimate conclusion of the race on July 27 at its origin in Portsmouth.

In celebrating the momentous occasion, The Wharf has planned a grand sendoff event. The eleven yachts will begin their departure at 8 p.m. in a slipping lines ceremony followed by a parade of sail where the vessels will line up together in formation. A large fireworks display will begin at 9 p.m., completing the ceremony as the teams set sail for Europe.

An astounding 730 total crew members manage the 11 yachts. Each boat is manned by one skipper, one first mate, and a crew of around 70 other individuals who keep things running smoothly.

The first Clipper Race took place in 1996, with over 6,000 lifetime competitors in its 28-year history. No previous sailing experience is required, but prospective competitors must complete a 4-week long ocean racing course before being approved to participate.

World’s largest ocean race sets sail from Portsmouth

The 46,000-mile Clipper Round the World Yacht Race will take almost a year to complete.

round the world yacht race positions

The world’s largest ocean race is under way as competitors set sail on a 46,000-mile journey which will take almost a year to complete.

The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, one of the toughest endurance challenges on the planet, features over 700 people representing 55 nationalities sailing on a fleet of 70ft racing yachts.

They will depart from Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth, on Sunday ready to tackle freezing temperatures and 40-foot waves as well as the blistering heat of the tropics.

This year’s competitors include one of the youngest ever skippers and the first mother-daughter duo sailing together on the same boat.

Amanda Shehab, 56, from Wrexham, will be competing with her daughter, Megan Allpress, 26, after her husband, who planned to sail around the world with her, died of cancer aged 51.

Ms Shehab said it was “fitting” that they were setting sail almost exactly two years to the day of his death.

“I want to think of it as a positive, happy thing.

“We went and saw the clipper race in 2018 in Liverpool.

“I said to him, ‘shall we do it?’

“We then thought we want to sail around the world so we bought our own boat and we were going to do it that way but sadly then he got a brain tumour and he didn’t make it.

“I thought after he’s gone I’ll disintegrate, I don’t know what I’ll do, but then I thought of clipper and I thought, right, I’ll do that.

“I signed up almost immediately after he’d gone.

“We’re so lucky to be able to do this together.”

When Ms Allpress heard her mother had signed up for the challenge, she decided to quit her job as an engineer and join her.

She said: “I just thought, ‘life is short – if you want to do something, do it’.”

Hannah Brewis, 27, from Grantham, Lincolnshire, skipper of the the Washington DC boat, is the third youngest the competition has ever had.

She first started sailing when she was nine years old, describing it as a “hobby which has gone a bit too far”.

She said: “If you’d have told me when I was 18 I was going to sail around the world I’d have said, ‘oh my God, that’s amazing’.

“As a professional sailor to sail around the world is the pinnacle of what you can achieve.”

The Clipper Race was founded by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the first person to sail solo and non-stop around the world in 1968.

The fleet is currently racing 1,200 nautical miles to Puerto Sherry, Spain, a brand new destination on the Clipper Race circuit, ahead of crossing the Atlantic Ocean to Punta del Este, Uruguay.

The race will also stop at locations including Cape Town, South Africa, Fremantle, Newcastle and Airlie Beach, Australia, Halong Bay, Vietnam, Qingdao and Zhuhai, China, Seattle and Washington DC, before returning to Portsmouth at the end of July, 2024, via Oban, Scotland.

According to the race organisers, 22% of competitors had never sailed before signing up to the challenge, which required them to take part in four intensive stages of training.

Latest News: 2023 McIntyre Ocean Globe Prize giving!

days hrs mins secs

The Ocean Globe Race (OGR) is a fully crewed retro race in the spirit of the 1973 Whitbread Round the World Race. It marks the 50th anniversary of the original event.

It’s an eight-month adventure around the world for ordinary sailors on normal yachts. Racing ocean-going GRP production yachts designed before 1988, there will be no computers, no satellites, no GPS, and no high-tech materials. Sextants, team spirit and raw determination alone in the great traditions of ocean racing are allowed on this truly human endeavor. These will be real heroes pushing each other to the limit and beyond – in a real race!

Following the success of the 2018 Golden Globe Race , the concept of retro, fully crewed, traditional ocean racing around the globe has returned.

Don McIntyre – 8 minutes on ‘Who What How When Where and Why of the OGR’

Yesterday and Today

The 1968 sunday times golden globe race was the first ever around-the-world yacht race..

It was an adventure to determine who could be the first to circumnavigate the globe solo, nonstop without assistance. Nine sailors started, only one finished. It was an epic tale won by the least expected to win – Sir Robin Knox-Johnston in the 32ft timber ketch  Suhaili . He established a world record in the same year that footsteps first appeared on the surface of the Moon. A few years later, the British yachting establishment organised the first ever fully crewed yacht race around the world. With backing from  Whitbread Breweries  and following in the wake of the great clipper ships, the legend that became known simply as ‘The Whitbread’ was born in 1973.

round the world yacht race positions

18 yachts lined up for the start on a sunny Saturday morning in Portsmouth England on 8 September 1973. Two more would join for later legs. It was an adventure, a family affair even, in yachts from 45ft to 74ft.

The race would take them first to Cape Town, South Africa and on to Sydney Australia, before heading deep south around the infamous Cape Horn to Rio de Janeiro and finally back up to Portsmouth – 27,000 miles later. A total of 324 crew were involved. Sadly, three would never return; lost overboard during Southern Ocean storms. Five yachts retired and three were dismasted. This race was also won by the least expected to win; a family crew with friends, sailing a standard production Swan 65 yacht,  Sayula II , skippered by Mexican Ramón Carlin.

It was a fantastic race. A true adventure filled with real stories of human endeavour, colour and challenges on the high seas.

Sayula II

For the next 20 years the adventure continued with a  Whitbread Round the World Race  staged every four years. Sailors of all levels, ages and backgrounds were able to follow their dreams. They signed on and circumnavigated the globe – in a race.

round the world yacht race positions

Yachts became steadily faster, and costs began to climb. The fifth edition in 1989 saw one entry spend £6million in an unsuccessful bid to win. The 6th edition in 1993 brought huge change and sadly the end for most sailors hoping to be part of this ultimate challenge. By then, the  Whitbread Race  had evolved into a fully professional event. In the words of the organisers, it was now the Formula 1 of Grand Prix ocean yacht racing. Ordinary sailors with their dreams could only spectate.

round the world yacht race positions

A growing international audience, advancing technology and huge budgets led eventually to Volvo taking over the race. They transformed the event into a nautical extravaganza of stunning proportions with elite sailors that we have all grown to respect. Peak athletes all, sailing a few grand prix, state of the art, one-design yachts, driven by computers, all with comprehensive shore support ready to pick up the pieces. These spectacular Volvo yachts left the clipper ships in their wake in every sense!

Today, these high budget boats chase records across the planet to dazzle at race villages and big budget spectacles. Currently in a state of transition, the newly renamed Ocean Race is stepping up again, reinventing itself in exciting ways with IMOCA 60 yachts sailed by just five elite crew and autopilots now helming for the first time.

On the 50th anniversary of the original Whitbread Round the World Race,  McIntyre Adventure (organisers of the Golden Globe Race ) and the  Globe Yacht Club  are proud to announce, that after 30 years of spectating, ordinary yacht club sailors and owners everywhere, once again have a chance to race around the globe! We are going back to that first great Whitbread Race and sailing like it’s 1973. The Ocean Globe Race (OGR) is for sailors with a dream and a sense of adventure – pure and simple! Is it YOU?

‘Everyday people’ set sail from Seattle for around-the-world race

Winds died to 2 to 3 mph from the south-southwest and Elliott Bay was glass calm. Not ideal for sailing, but not a storm either.

Those were the conditions at Seattle’s Bell Harbor Marina as 11 sailing teams from around the world set off Friday in 70-foot ocean racing yachts for the seventh leg of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.

The teams, each with 20 to 24 people, will traverse 7,200 miles, from Seattle to Panama and on to Washington, D.C.

Organizers say the event trains “everyday people to become ocean racers.”

Each participant must complete four weeks of intense training before taking part in one or all eight stages of the circumnavigation. As for the crew, 30% of them, who hail from 55 nations, have never been on a sailboat before readying for this race.

So far, the teams have raced over 20,000 nautical miles. The event started in Portsmouth, England, on Sept 3. After the race reaches D.C., it’s on to Scotland then back to Portsmouth on July 27, some 11 months after they departed. The full around-the-world challenge is 40,000 nautical miles.

Della Parsons, crew recruitment director for Clipper Ventures, did a presentation Wednesday in Seattle meant to inspire people to give the adventure a try. As she showed video from a previous race that included huge waves and difficult conditions, she said “You could see people’s eyes widening and thinking, ‘This is ridiculous. I could never do that.’ And then I said to them at the end of the video, ‘I know you’re thinking that but you have to remember all of the people that you’ve just seen on this video are just like you. Two years before that they were also sitting in a presentation thinking ‘this is ridiculous.’ And now look at them. They’ve just really achieved something remarkable.”

2023-24 Ocean Globe Race: it’s a wrap

Published on June 25th, 2024 by Assoc Editor -->

Heather Thomas and her all-women Maiden crew have been crowned the 2023-24 Ocean Globe Race champions during a lavish mid-summer day poolside prize-giving party, receiving the OGR perpetual trophy, a magnificent replica of the first 1973 Whitbread Round the World Race trophy.

The party, attended by VIPs from around the world and some 200 OGR crew members flying in from 13 of the yachts to have completed the grueling 27,000 mile round the world yacht race around Cape Horn, celebrated long into the night. Thomas and her crew, the first all women team to win a crewed global race, were among the first to jump into the pool to celebrate.

Marco Trombetti, who raced aboard his company-sponsored Swan 65 yacht Translated 9 (previously ADC Accutrac in the 1977 Whitbread race skippered by the first female skipper Clare Francis) said of this amateur inspired race marking the 50th anniversary of the first Whitbread Round Race back in 1973, “This race has had a marked effect on all of us. It has certainly changed me. We won two legs, and also broke our boat, twice! But we persevered to complete the course. It has all been an extraordinary life-changing experience!”

Heather Thomas was full of praise, not only for her Maiden crew who came from all walks of life and 12 nationalities, but for Tracy Edwards whose drive and vision masterminded a repeat of her own all women adventure in the same yacht during the 1989/90 Whitbread.

round the world yacht race positions

“I’m so proud of this crew and what we have achieved. There is such a strong bond between us. We’ve achieved our goal of showing what women can do, raising several £100,000s for Tracy’s ‘Maiden Factor’ charity campaign to raise awareness about the millions of girls worldwide who are unable to access an education,” said Heather Thomas, skipper of Maiden.

Jussi Paavoseppä, skipper of the Swan 651 Spirit of Helsinki, was first to dive into the pool fully clothed enroute to picking up his prize for finishing 1st overall within Sayula Class on the final leg from Punta del Este Uruguay back to Cowes. He commented on the huge camaraderie that developed between crews in a retro race where navigation was performed with a sextant and weather information could only be gained via HF radio. “I’ve never known a race where rival crews were so helpful to each other, passing on weather and other information to each other.”

Other awards included the Sir Peter Blake Sailor of the OGR trophy which went to French sailor Bertrand Delhom aboard Neptune, a Parkinson’s sufferer who endured considerable personal-sacrifice to complete the circumnavigation and highlight the disease and determination needed to minimizing its life changing effects.

The 81 crewmembers who completed the full circumnavigation were each awarded a Gold plaque and membership to one of the most exclusive clubs, the International Association of Cape Horners.

Marie Tabarly and her crew, who gained line honours in the 73ft maxi yacht Pen Duick VI built for her father Eric Tabarly to compete in the first Whitbread race was awarded a Cape Horners flag for leading the race around Cape Horn, along with Jussi Paavoseppä and the crew of Spirit of Helsinki who were first in the Sayula Class, and Jean d’Arthuys and his crew on Triana who led the Adventure class around the Cape.

Don McIntyre, the OGR Race Director, congratulated all crews for completing the race safely and successfully. He also announced that plans are well advanced for a second Ocean Globe Race in 2027 and a third in 2031. Having commissioned a series of magnificent replicas of the first 1973 Whitbread Round the World Race trophy, He said, “These are so special, I’ve ordered enough to cover the next four events! Interest in the 2027 race is very high.

“Many people have a strong desire to race around the world and this McIntyre OGR has proved that you don’t need multi-million dollar budgets to do so. It looks like we will have more boats in the next race than the 14 starters for the 2023-24 event – including some who enjoyed themselves so much this time round, that they want to do it all again.”

The Nautor Swan 57 EXPLORER which was first yacht across the Royal Yacht Squadron Cowes start line on September 10, 2023 and last across the same finish line on May 13, 2024 is the first confirmed entry for the 2027 OGR. With two paying crew already signed on for this next grand adventure, there are still seven crew places available for adventurous sailors.

French entry leads Round Ireland Race as it begins with ideal conditions

Current conditions could favour an overall win by a smaller entry.

Ideal conditions marked the start of the biennial SSE Renewables Round Ireland Race at Wicklow on Saturday as 48 crews hit the starting-line watched by a large crowd of onlookers that lined the shore.

Within seconds of the starting signal made from the LE George Bernard Shaw, the fleet was reduced by one as Finbarr O’Regan’s Artful Dodger from Kinsale Yacht Club withdrew from the race when some mast rigging failed.

Hours later, James Neville’s Ino Noir from the Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC) also pulled out after hitting the notorious Blackwater Bank off Wexford.

In the previous race in 2022, the former RORC Commodore was also forced out after the pounding seas off the southwest corner of Ireland caused his boat to start delaminating.

For a time on Saturday, this year’s fleet might also have been punished by headwinds and choppy seas that they soon encountered after passing Wicklow Head as a fresh southerly wind pushed against the strong ebbing tide.

But the conditions quickly eased to light winds once past the Saltee Islands off the south Wexford coast.

Crew-member Maurice “Prof” O’Connell on Pete Smyth’s Searcher from Dún Laoghaire’s Royal Irish Yacht Club reported that along with most of the leading boats, they spent most of Saturday night “sailing in circles” until dawn brought nicer sailing winds that allowed the boats to point directly towards the Fastnet Rock off west Cork.

As nightfall beckoned on Sunday night, French entry Teasing Machine skippered by Laurent Pages was leading the monohull race and duelling with Britain’s Adam Davis on Paradox 3, a large trimaran with both being capable of being first boat back to Wicklow.

The leading pair should reach the southwest corner overnight and forecast breezy indicates a classic “sleigh-ride” northwards along Ireland’s Atlantic seaboard towards an expected midweek finish at Wicklow.

As the race is decided on IRC corrected time, current conditions could favour an overall win by a smaller entry but the legendary north coast tidal features and usually benign Irish Sea have yet to come into play; the 705 nautical-mile race is wide open.
