View all yachts for charter

As well as being an aesthetically alluring yacht, one with real presence on the water, this is a yacht that regularly sails at double-digit speeds and takes a matter of minutes to go from anchored to sailing. She can harness the natural power of the wind and convert it into a blistering 22 knots, her vertical bow slicing through the waves with barely a whisper. SEA EAGLE is a yacht that places you at one with nature.

The sheer exhilaration of sailing at this speed cannot be overstated. There is a feeling of being connected to a natural force. This pace also makes it easy for her to relocate quickly, allowing you to sail where you want without sacrificing valuable time. When the day is calm, the yacht’s two large engines keep the itinerary on track.

Despite her ocean-taming pace and beguiling good looks, SEA EAGLE is very comfortable underway, ensuring utmost comfort when moving around on board in any conditions. Her highly experienced crew are available to help with your every need.

At anchor her vast deck spaces transform into a playground of possibilities. See the sun set with a cocktail on the flybridge as the chef prepares an informal dinner on the BBQ. Watch a movie on a huge screen in the main deck’s outdoor cinema or climb into the eagle’s nest that rises up the main mast to enjoy thrilling bird’s-eye views of your anchorage.

Enjoy a pre-dinner drink at the inside-outside bar on the main deck aft or take lunch in the open-air dining table shaded by the overhang before stretching out on the expansive aft deck. For special occasions there’s a formal dining room and lounge with wraparound views.

If you want to venture ashore to explore, she has a midships boarding platform that can be used in any conditions. Otherwise access to the water is via the folding swim platform aft, where the crew is ready to help you enjoy a vast range of watertoys, from waverunners to e-foils, SeaBobs to sailing dinghies, scuba diving kit to kayaks and SUPs.

When it’s time for bed, she has extremely versatile accommodation on the lower deck with two master suites, three twin suites and a gym that can convert into a children’s cabin, a nanny’s cabin with cot, or a staff cabin.

If your guests are seeking to understand the epic power of nature, appreciate the wonder of the ocean and revel in a seven-star retreat, no other sailing yacht delivers like SEA EAGLE. All this while enjoying a wonderful holiday afloat with a crew that everyone loves. Book your unforgettable charter today.

Sea-Eagle-II-Royal-Huisman

Royal Huisman reveals new details of 81m flagship sailing yacht Sea Eagle

Dutch shipyard Royal Huisman has revealed new details and never-before-seen images of the world's second-largest aluminium sailing yacht  Sea Eagle , three years after her delivery.

The 81-metre three-masted schooner left the shipyard in 2020 in the shadow of the pandemic and joined the ranks as the seventh-largest sailing yacht in the world. Since then, she has been on a non-stop circumnavigation and has more than 45,000 nautical miles under her keel. From the Caribbean to the Galapagos and on to the South Pacific Islands, she has proven her mettle as a true adventurer, but the finer details of her design and build have remained a well-guarded secret up until now.

The record-breaking vessel was commissioned by a visionary owner looking to upgrade from his existing 43-metre by the same name, also built by Royal Huisman. A power pairing of Dykstra Naval Architects and Mark Whiteley Design saw the two studios work together to bring his vision to life: it was to be a "true sailor's yacht" and world traveller favouring function over frills, with powerful performance that could be easily managed.

After a four-year build, Sea Eagle emerged from the shed in Vollenhove almost twice the length and five times the volume of her predecessor and was, at the time, the largest project undertaken by the shipyard. Her Flag Blue hull, Chevy White superstructure, trio of masts and sheer size make her unmistakable.

A powerful Panamax rig comprises three carbon masts, each growing a little taller from bow to stern, with a maximum air draft of 61 metres allowing her to clear the Bridge of the Americas when crossing from the Caribbean to the Pacific. The main mast features a crow’s nest operated by the touch of a button that whisks guests up to the top for a true bird's eye view at anchor.

She canters along at 21.5 knots in moderate breeze thanks to her powerful rig flying 2,580 square metres upwind and 3,552 square metres downwind. All three mainsails can easily be hoisted simultaneously thanks to powerful hydraulics – taking no more time than required for a sloop half the size – and lowered with the help of carbon fibre roller furling booms.

She is fitted with a serious kit on deck too that includes 34 winches, the largest of which – for the yankee, staysail sheets and mizzen sheet - have a pulling load of 18,000 kilograms. Below the waterline, a fin keel minimises wetted surface to enhance speed and heeling, while a five-metre-tall carbon composite rudder is the largest ever produced. Her masts, booms, rigging, and winches were manufactured by Royal Huisman's specialist rigging company Rondal.

A plumb bow, near-full-length waterline and beamy transom work twofold to give her a modern profile as well as better sail-keeping capabilities for long passages at sea. “It may look like a contemporary modern sailing yacht now but in 50 years' time it will be a classic,” said a representative of  Dykstra Naval Architects .

“The essence of the yacht’s appeal is illustrated by long, uninterrupted lines of glass, a subtle sweep of superstructure and a blister to enclose the bridge," explained Mark Whiteley. "As the design developed we honed in on a faceted feature which helps give Sea Eagle her distinctive modern signature, lightens the overhangs and reflects the chine. The overall effect gives the superstructure ‘a curved tension’ that draws the eye from bow to stern. The proportions and low profile were driven by the owner’s request to have a continuous floor from the exterior dining space, right through the large main saloon to the forward dining saloon, with no steps.”

Sliding glass panels separate the deck saloon from the exterior deck without a threshold to step over, which can be opened to create a continuous space with a U-shaped bar at the centre that straddles both inside and out. Steps on either side of the saloon lead up to the flybridge, which acts as the main social hub on board where guests can enjoy 360-degree views and observe sailing operations. A secondary lounge and formal dining area is found forward between the main and mizzen mast on the main deck, with seating for up to 16 guests and wraparound windows.

Accommodation is confined to the lower deck with six cabins hosting up to 12 guests, while accommodations for 14 crew are accessed via a concealed entrance at the foremast near the tender bay, which houses an eight-metre tender. A first glimpse inside shows a bright and pared-back interior with a neutral colour palette, Alpi Walnut bulkheads and very few extravagances.

Access to the deck and interior from the water is supplied through foldout boarding platforms on both port and starboard sides, while the stern platform provides access to the sea for guests wishing to make use of the toys or go for a swim.

"Supersized sailing yachts like this are no longer an impossible dream," said Royal Huisman’s CEO Jan Timmerman. “Continual innovation, accumulated expertise and rigorous self-challenge have come together through our highly skilled and dedicated team to produce Athena , Sea Eagle and, currently in-build, the world’s largest sloop Project 410 ."

The 85-metre Project 410 is one of three superyachts currently under construction at Royal Huisman, including the 65-metre Project 408, also known as Aquarius II , and the world's largest sportfish built under the codename Project 406 .

Sea Eagle – a true sailor’s superyacht

Three years after a low-key launch, captain mike douglass discusses the striking schooner as it embarks on a busy charter schedule….

sail yacht sea eagle

Delivered in 2020 at the height of the pandemic, Sea Eagle ’s arrival on the superyacht scene was, as even Royal Huisman admits, ‘low-key’ compared with the stature it has now gained in the upper bracket of sailing superyachts.

TSG caught up with the stunning 81-metre schooner as it was completing a yard period at STP Palma ahead of a busy charter season. Cutting an imposing figure at the end of the dock, Sea Eagle has very few contemporaries for true comparison, whichever way you look at it.

As the world’s largest aluminium sailing yacht, it takes its place in the top 10, alongside Huisman’s Athena . A contentious list at the best of times, the key criterion that elevates Sea Eagle relates to the word ‘sailing’. Sea Eagle ’s comparatively light weight, long waterline and powerful, yet manageable, Panamax rig ensure it lives up to the cliché of being ‘a true sailing yacht’.

Originally built for a discerning owner with blue-water cruising and private usage in mind, it’s now under new ownership and ready to make a bigger splash. At the time of writing, it’s in Sweden, where it will spend the summer cruising the Nordic region before returning to the Mediterranean in late September.

sail yacht sea eagle

According to Royal Huisman, the original brief for Sea Eagle was to “create an extremely comfortable and spacious yacht with good seakeeping and exceptional amenities for both guests and crew, offering outstanding passage-making performance so that the owner could take in as much of the world under sail as possible. A true sailor’s yacht – practical, powerful, safe and easily managed. Finally, it had to be functional, favouring simplicity and reliability over unnecessary frills.”

A walkthrough of the yacht clearly reveals that this brief has certainly been followed. The guest accommodation is spacious but not excessive. Undoubtedly, the designers could have taken more space for the owners’ areas, considering the available volume. Instead, it’s obvious that it has been intelligently used to provide the necessary storage, working areas and crew accommodation to fulfil the rest of its brief: that of an efficient world cruiser.

sail yacht sea eagle

In the pantheon of very large sailing yachts, Sea Eagle is in the minority. It may seem like a misnomer, but a dirty secret of some large sailing yachts is that they don’t sail as much as their smaller cousins or common conception suggests.

The reasons for this are manifold. A combination of the extreme forces at play, the danger associated with accidents and the high cost of replacement and associated lead times in case of mishaps can leave crew skittish when it comes to hoisting solely for the purposes of a passage.

“ Sea Eagle has sailed over 55,000 miles in the first three years,” says its captain, Mike Douglass. “A lot of that has been under sail and without engines. It handles very well, and having the confidence to do these passages with very little engine use is a testament to the build quality.”

A contributing factor to this confidence is the fact that the massive sail area (2,580 sq m/27,770 sq ft upwind; 3,552 sq m/38,233 sq ft downwind) is spread over three masts. The hoisting and furling time is roughly equivalent to a sloop of 50 metres, meaning managing this kind of sail set-up is not as daunting as it may have been half a generation ago.

Behind this ability is the energy-generation and management system. Electrical and hydraulic power come mainly from the twin generators. In addition, there is a hydraulic take-off from each main engine and peak shaving from the powerful battery bank, resulting in a significant volume of hydraulic capacity (500kW) – well in excess of requirements to hoist fore, main and mizzen sails simultaneously.

The 60-metre carbon Rondal masts, as with all that leave the Rondal factory, are built in one piece. The carbon-fibre roller furling booms, captive reel and drum winches, and flush deck hatches were also manufactured by Rondal, while continuous carbon-fibre standing rigging was supplied by Carbo-Link. The sail plan is then managed by Rondal’s Integrated Sail Handling System which interfaces spars, rigging, winches and sailing hardware in a custom configuration.

sail yacht sea eagle

“Environmental impact reduction is better achievable when the vessel is responsive to the breeze and can sail by wind to the desired destination,” says Erik Wassen, of Dykstra Naval Architects . “The powerful rig geometry of Sea Eagle can be quickly adapted to the conditions encountered, allowing her to safely sail for proportionately more miles of the journey.”

Douglass adds, “When you look down the line of the great Huisman sailing yachts using similar rigs – Blue Papillon , Hyperion – they are tried and tested. We’re just running three of them side by side.”

Sea Eagle ’s Panamax rigs are integral to its world-cruising credentials. The ability to transit the Panama Canal (while fitting under the Bridge of the Americas with a 61-metre clearance) means the yacht can sail from the Caribbean to the Pacific without the arduous trip around Cape Horn.

After a planned Caribbean charter season, and hopefully a racing schedule, that’s exactly where it will head. As with increasing numbers of intrepid yachts, the wilds of Central and South America await.

Large sailing yachts are idiosyncratic, none more so than Sea Eagle . They appeal to a smaller section of the charter market and have to contend with a smaller pool of prospective clients. And, at 550,000 euros per week (via Burgess as the sole CA), it’s at the sharp end of the sailing charter market.

“I have no doubt that what Sea Eagle offers more than overcomes this price point,” says Douglass. “We have a very experienced charter crew and some great sailors. The space on board, the comfort underway and the experience that we can offer, compared to what the same price gets you in the motoryacht market, it’s incomparable.”

sail yacht sea eagle

Having been on the build crew and eventually captaining sailing yacht Vertigo , the 2011 67-metre Alloy Yachts ketch, through one of the busiest sail charter programmes imaginable, as well as more recently the 83-metre Abeking & Rasmussen motoryacht Secret , Douglass understands the finer points of successful sailing charters.

“There are minor adjustments that need to be made,” says Douglass. “For example, with a six-metre draft like we have on Sea Eagle , it’s vital to explain to guests who may not have experience on sailing yachts our limitations versus opportunities. We may not be able to get all the way into this bay, but we can offer this other experience in return.”

There are other subtleties that set Sea Eagle apart – less glamorous than the sailing capability but no less vital for its global chartering aspirations. The Pacific specifically tests the boundaries of a conscientious vessel’s garbage-management systems. Ironically, many will run out of cold storage before they run out of fuel. Having systems in place to manage overlooked factors such as this is vital to effective and low-impact chartering.

As experienced charter brokers will tell you, aligning the right client with the right boat in the right place is tough. Many owners are taking their yachts on global programmes that are redefining yachting’s global boundaries. is looking to follow suit.

However, the bread and butter of the charter market remains the Mediterrranean/Caribbean split season. Attracting clients to the furthest reaches of the Pacific, although richly rewarding for those willing, is still a challenge.

“Rather than sporadically picking up charters, the vision we have is to slowly build a network of charter guests that have an emotional investment in the yacht and are interested in its programme – people who have been on board, perhaps in the more traditional destinations, who we can share the yacht’s plans with and look 12 to 24 months down the line,” concludes Douglass.

“We are embarking on a busy and challenging programme. It’s great to have an owner who’s open to discussion and happy to let the expertise, both on board and in various fields or regions, guide us. Our approach is always to assess the process and make sure we are operating the boat as safely and effectively as possible.”

Sea Eagle II: the world’s largest aluminium sailing yacht

SEA EAGLE II: Royal Huisman has built the world’s largest aluminium sailing yacht

Sea Eagle under way

The 81-meter contemporary schooner was perfectly on schedule for her delivery date, but Covid-19 restrictions in the Netherlands prevented the finishing touch from being completed.

Despite the strict regulations introduced last spring, the shipyard was able to get up in a very short time.

All this allowed the team to safely “pick up where they left off” in these extraordinary times and with very high quality standards that have made this shipyard an important reference all over the world.

Nearly all board systems, such as gensets, air conditioning, waste water treatment and electronics, were thoroughly tested in the year prior to launch to avoid any surprises during the commissioning stage.

Sea Eagle sailing

Spectacular speeds over 21 knots can be achieved by the world’s largest aluminium sailing yacht by powering up SEA EAGLE II’s Rondal rig, which can carry over 3500 square meters of sail area evenly distributed over her carbon Panamax masts.

The full sail area is controlled by 34 winches from sailing system integrator Rondal.

The largest winches for the world’s largest aluminium sailing yacht – for the yankee, staysail sheets and mizzen sheet runners – are capable of a tremendous 18 tons (18000 kg) pulling load.

Thanks to these record numbers, SEA EAGLE II will be ranked among the top 10 largest sailboats in the world.

Upon delivery to her owner, she will be the largest aluminium sailing yacht in the world.

Her masts are over 60 meters high and the yacht has a 4-meter rudder, the largest ever built with this material.

The yacht will also have a hydraulic crow’s nest, which will rise up the main mast and give supreme 360-degree views out to sea.

The interiors consist of 6 cabins for 12 guests, a master suite and a cabin for 13 crew members.

Sea Eagle stern

Mr. Yin has wanted to reaffirm his confidence in the shipyard’s abilility to build his ultimate dream yacht, commissioning the SEA EAGLE II.

Royal Huisman ‘s team has make this great dream come true, keeping the promise ” If you can dream it, we can build it”.

Sea Eagle II: One of the world’s finest superyachts

  • Toby Hodges
  • July 5, 2023

Stunning images of the 81m schooner Sea Eagle II in French Polynesia are a rare chance to see one of the world’s most magnificent superyachts in full flight. Toby Hodges finds out more from the team behind the design

sail yacht sea eagle

It’s very rare to see quite such a large vessel, the world’s largest aluminium sailing yacht in this case, truly in its element: sailing full bore in an idyllic location. To us sailing fans, it’s the equivalent of a birdwatcher photographing an exceptional species of finch, kingfisher or indeed eagle. With regards to Sea Eagle II , however, these images really do make you re-evaluate your impressions of scale.

We’ve talked in detail about this superyacht before, when it was just a vision, a project in build. But these pictures, showing it in full flight, help bring a long list of impressive technical statistics to life.

While there are many big yachts, there are very few sailing yachts as large as this – officially eight, but of those considered proper sail-powered rather than sail-assisted yachts, arguably only three. And certainly very few we’ve seen that can sail like this: seemingly with relative ease, control, power and grace.

The extensive photoshoot in French Polynesia shows Sea Eagle II really shifting under its own easily furled canvas. This should come as no surprise to anyone familiar with Dykstra Naval Architects. Look at the spray flying off the towering stemhead – this is no sailing motoryacht. From bow-on you can see the hull is comparatively very slender, with purposeful chines and a flare to the topsides aft. The waterline is fully extended as the sections transition from a rounded U-shape bilge forward to a flat run aft.

sail yacht sea eagle

Long waterlines together with a modern, beamy aft shape helps create massive volume, powerful performance and low heeling speed. Photo: Tim McKenna

Combine this with the long glass deckhouse and it reminds of a modern explorer yacht or a naval craft. Its hull lines are strikingly efficient, purposeful even. Her 6m draught aside, you get the impression there is nowhere Sea Eagle II can’t soar to. That it has already completed a circumnavigation and sailed 45,000 miles in its first three years is less surprising when you consider just how long legged it is – indeed the crew and designers have reported sustained passagemaking speeds of over 20 knots.

But why the look, why that sailplan, and how did it get from concept to sailing in Pacific islands?

A classic start

The initial brief was actually for a more classical yacht, similar to the 90m schooner Athena that Royal Huisman built for Jim Clark in 2004, before the owner realised he’d prefer the benefits that come with a more modern shape with straight lines. This allowed for a much longer waterline and beamy transom for more stability, volume and comfort at less heel.

Passagemaking performance aboard a practical and safe yacht to manage easily was the target. Sea Eagle II was commissioned by an ageing owner who wanted a large, stable and easily driven yacht – which is why it ended up being twice the length and three times the volume and sail area of the previous Sea Eagle , a 43m yacht which launched from Huisman in 2015.

The modern look came from Dykstra’s Erik Wassen, lead naval architect for the project, who I caught up with to discuss how the design transpired and if it has fulfilled its brief. Where a classic yacht “has lots of details to give it life – I thought a round bilge boat with no detail on it is just incredibly dull,” he replies candidly. This helps explain the yacht’s prominent chine, “single aft, turning into a double chine forward, to give it detail,” while in the transom the topsides are inverted, and have some negative camber. “That’s what your eye picks up – it emphasises that masculine look.”

As well as the aesthetic trickery, it’s a shape that works from a naval architecture point of view too: “the knuckle gave me more beam in the forward end of the boat where we have the foremast. The chainplates can be separated more without having too much flare in the boat.”

To manage this canvas, 34 winches can all be pushbutton controlled from the helm stations. Photo: Tim McKenna

Sea Eagle II ’s striking styling is set off by the long deckhouse with its straight glass windows, which cements an explorer look. The UK’s Mark Whitely, who designed the interior, drew this profile. “We went with that and explored it further to sink the bridge half into the superstructure to keep the overall height limited,” Wassen explains.

A schooner rig featuring three carbon masts with furling booms was deemed the most effective way to give Sea Eagle II  the most manageable sail power at the Panamax limit (61m). Dynarigs, as used on the Dykstra projects Maltese Falcon and Black Pearl , were not appropriate for an owner who preferred more classic styles. And while Wassen says they did consider square-top sails, the additional complication was considered too high at the time (around 2017). Instead, the three heavily roached mains have proven to provide ample sail area.

Royal Huisman’s sister company Rondal built the three equal size high modulus carbon masts, as well as the furling booms, captive and drum winches, while Carbo-Link supplied the carbon standing rigging.

Straightforward sailing

The beauty of the sailplan is that it can set so much canvas on easily managed push button furlers. The 34 winches are all interfaced and controlled by Rondal’s integrated sail handling system. The Stratis-built fore, main and mizzen sails can raise simultaneously thanks to plenty of hydraulic juice powered by twin 120kW gensets and power take-offs on the main engines.

When you include the staysails that can set off each mast and the yankee, there are seven furling sails from Doyle, totalling around 3,500m2. And that’s without a kite (which the new owners are looking into adding, with rumours of future racing events such as the RORC Caribbean 600 ).

“Tacking is very straightforward,” reported Royal Huisman’s commissioning skipper: “the mains mostly look after themselves with only minor adjustments.

“Gybing naturally takes a little more orchestration, as on any large yacht. But it is still a smooth and safe process.”

sail yacht sea eagle

Side decks you could fit a skittle alley on, yet protected by high bulwarks. Photo: Tim McKenna

The yankee sheet has the most load, but even that’s on an 18-tonne pull winch, which is reasonably common in large yachts. To depower the sailplan, the crew typically reef from the mizzen first, with the reefs all on halyard locks.

In terms of performance, this is a mile-munching machine. “In a good breeze, on a beam reach, with reefed sails, it does 20 knots comfortably without pushing it,” Wassen reports. This is confirmed by Huisman’s commissioning skipper who reported high boat speeds that are easy to maintain: “We comfortably recorded 22 knots in moderate wind conditions. In fact, at 16-18 knots boat speed, I found myself regularly checking the B&G speed displays for confirmation because the motion is so relaxed. Sailing fast with just a gentle heel [typically max 10-15°], she feels very safe.”

Wassen stresses it’s never had a race crew aboard, so has never been pushed. “We know the boat has been doing sustainable 20 knot+ deliveries… so I think the performance polars we made are doable.”

Palatial space at anchor. Transom hinges to create a full beach terrace. Lazarette includes a crane for the 8m guest tender plus toy space. Photo: Tim McKenna

He attributes the commendable performance to the long waterlines, where buttocks slowly rise to a transom that is only just clear of the water. But credit must go equally to the stiff and strong build. Typically yachts of this scale are built in steel, which results in a much heavier structure. Royal Huisman are masters in large aluminium craft and this, its largest to date, helped them further the technology – learnings which have continued to progress with the launch of its recent full performance yacht Nilaya and the colossal 85m sloop in build.

The complexity of Sea Eagle II ’s build, and its four years in engineering and construction, cannot be understated. The goal was to find the right balance between strength and flex, the former to ensure the necessary longitudinal strength and rigidity, the latter to absorb the dynamic shock loads from waves.

Glass doesn’t bend

An example of such a construction challenge lay with how to mount such a long, rigid deckhouse structure, which comprises so much laminated glass, onto a more flexible aluminium hull. “When we were doing the FEM [finite element method] analysis, we noticed that the glass mullions would be picking up a lot of the load,” Wassen explains: “the deck is participating in the overall structure and a boat with this beam will deflect and bend in waves.”

As glass won’t flex, the build team needed to include some tolerance between the roof and mullions. Aerospace specialists developed an adhesive specially for this project, using it to bond the forward section of the deckhouse to create 2cm of flex.

sail yacht sea eagle

This long run of glass is central to the overall aesthetic, something Mark Whitely elaborates on: “The essence of the yacht’s appeal is illustrated by long, uninterrupted lines of glass, a subtle sweep of superstructure and a blister to enclose the semi-raised bridge.

“The proportions and low profile were driven by the owner’s request to have a continuous floor from the exterior dining space, right through the large main saloon to the forward dining saloon, with no steps.” The photos confirm side decks you could bowl down, and fore and aft decks clear enough for racket sports.

sail yacht sea eagle

The formal dining and leisure area at the forward end of the deckhouse. The curved, forward windscreen gives a panoramic outlook. Photo: Tim McKenna

Elsewhere on deck there are foldout boarding platforms on both sides. Outside and inside worlds are separated by flush sliding glass doors which disappear into their own garages, while steps each side of the dining area lead to the expansive flybridge to offer another full deck of entertaining space and an ideal vantage point to helm from.

Another prime feature of Sea Eagle II’s design is the full bridge nestled between flybridge helm station and the main deckhouse, from which it can be commanded in heavy weather. Deciding at which of the many long tables to sit or relax at would seemingly be the only headache for owners and guests. Whether alfresco on the aft deck, inside/outside bar seating, the decksaloon or a formal dining and leisure area forward with 180° windscreen views, all are on the same level.

The main accommodation is for 12 guests, while forward of the foremast is a separate low profile entrance for the 14 crew to reach their quarters. The stowage space for toys is formidable, complete with cranes to launch all with minimal fuss.

However, while it offers palatial comfort at anchor, this is a yacht that clearly comes alive under sail. In summary, these photos prove what the jury at the Design & Innovation Awards 2021 said when awarding Sea Eagle II with the ‘Best Naval Architecture Sailing Yachts’ award. “She is not just a large cruising yacht with global capability but a beautiful boat that sails well.”

By Nina Done   31 March 2023

Royal Huisman has released a collection of stunning new images of the elegant 81m (266ft) sailing yacht SEA EAGLE II , currently the largest aluminum sailing yacht in the world, following her global voyage covering over 45,000 nautical miles.

Showcasing never seen before images since her low-key delivery under the shadow of the pandemic in 2020, pictures reveal her dramatic lines, plumb bow and majestic Panamax rig under power, courtesy of Dykstra Naval Architects and Mark Whitely Design.

Her vast rigging encompasses three mainsails that can be hoisted simultaneously for ultra-efficient post-lunch getaways, while her aluminum hull ensures a lightness, acceleration, strength and fuel efficiency, giving her the edge over other heavy, sail-assisted yachts.

THE SEA EAGLE SOARS

…of the contemporary flybridge schooner, SEA EAGLE II (nowadays SEA EAGLE). A true sailing yacht, this 81m / 266ft  beauty immediately earned her place alongside the shipyard’s Athena in the elite club of the world’s 10 largest sailing yachts.

Delivered in 2020 under the shadow of the pandemic, SEA EAGLE II’s arrival on the superyacht scene was inevitably low-key. Today, following her extensive world exploration, and with over 45,000 nm under her keel, Royal Huisman is pleased to set matters right and place this magnificent schooner in the spotlight she deserves.

sail yacht sea eagle

Designed by Dykstra Naval Architects and Mark Whiteley Design, SEA EAGLE II has dramatic and purposeful contemporary lines with a plumb bow. Her very long waterline and powerful Panamax rig ensure effortless, mile-eating performance. On her sail trials, she comfortably recorded 21.5 knots in a moderate breeze. Despite her massive sail area (2,580 sq m / 27,770 sq ft upwind; 3552 sq m / 38,233 sq ft downwind), all three mainsails can easily be hoisted at once – taking no more time than required for a sloop of half this size. The efficiency of this sail management system understates the technical challenges behind it. Exceptional cooperation of an ‘A Team’ of Dykstra, Rondal, Carbo-Link and Doyle Sails made everything possible.

sail yacht sea eagle

SEA EAGLE II is currently Royal Huisman’s largest yacht. Project 410, the 85m / 280ft sloop, will take over this title on delivery. Nearly 60 years of aluminum yacht-building experience have provided the shipyard with a level of expertise in constructing hulls of this material that few shipyards can match. This is especially true for sailing yachts of this size. The advantages are equally large: lightness, acceleration, strength and fuel-efficiency being just a few characteristics of a true sailing yacht versus a heavy, sail-assisted motor yacht.

A true sailor’s yacht – practical, powerful, safe and easily managed

sail yacht sea eagle

The inspiration behind SEA EAGLE II was her visionary owner, who began to formulate his ideas while circumnavigating his first yacht, the 43m / 142ft sloop SEA EAGLE (I), also built by Royal Huisman (and now exploring the world again as Ravenger, under new ownership).  The owner had a very clear vision of the priorities for his next project.

The brief for SEA EAGLE II was to create an extremely comfortable and spacious yacht with good sea keeping and exceptional amenities for both guests and crew. She had to offer outstanding passage-making performance so that the owner could take in as much of the world under sail as possible. She had to be a true sailor’s yacht – practical, powerful, safe and easily managed. Finally, she had to be functional, favoring simplicity and reliability over unnecessary frills.

And that is the yacht that Royal Huisman has so successfully delivered – with a good deal of team pride. SEA EAGLE II is almost twice the length and five times the volume of her predecessor – the largest project undertaken by the shipyard to date.

Supersized sailing yachts like this are no longer an impossible dream, Royal Huisman’s CEO Jan Timmerman points out: “Continual innovation, accumulated expertise and rigorous self-challenge have come together through our highly skilled and dedicated team to produce Athena, SEA EAGLE II and, currently in-build, the world’s largest sloop, the 85 m / 280 ft New World Sloop aka Project 410. Other breath-taking concepts, APEX 850 and WING100, are also generating considerable interest worldwide. Each example just awaits a visionary individual who will desire the opportunity to transform a revolutionary, true sailing yacht into reality. The next Royal Huisman supersized sailing yacht would be welcomed into the ranks of the world’s top 10. She will join the existing Royal Huisman-built, thoroughbred ‘supersized sailing yachts’, and – with our continuous increase of expertise – she would be our finest yet.”

Supersized sailing yachts by Royal Huisman: an attractive (and possibly even better) alternative to motor yachts

In general, the comfort of motor yachts is enjoyed by their owners while “on location” – in a pretty marina or at an idyllic anchorage. Sailing yachts provide the same enjoyment, but are also much (more) fun while… Read on at this website > news > inhuis stories & updates [ link ]

MIAMI (AP) — The U.S. sailors going to the Paris Olympics are looking for a comeback in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Marseille — perhaps none more than veteran Stu McNay, returning for his fifth Olympics but competing in a new mixed-gender category.

The Rhode Island sailor made his Olympic debut in the Beijing Games in 2008, the last time the United States, once dominant in the sport, won a gold medal . He competed again in London in 2012, the United States’ first shutout since the 1930s ; in Rio in 2016, when the U.S. was limited to one bronze; and in 2021 in Tokyo, another shutout for the Americans, who watched the well-funded British team overtake them on the all-time sailing medals table.

“As an older person, you can bring grit and determination,” McNay said after winning the team trials off Miami Beach, Florida, this year.

The father of two will turn 43 during the races in France, while cementing his place among the elite of the elite — only 0.42% of Olympians in modern history have competed in five or more Games.

But McNay has been perfecting a new trick for these Olympics. The mixed-gender 470 is a dinghy that will feature a man and a woman for the first time, instead of two athletes of the same gender.

Sailing keeps getting faster and more physical, with lighter, highly technical boats — where every ounce of weight, and its distribution, makes a difference. So mixed-gender means rethinking every aspect of the racing, from the stiffness of the mast to communication concerns, sailors say.

Many teams default to the woman at the helm, a more strategic position that involves defining the course by constantly checking other boats and the compass, and the man trapezing as crew, for more power at the sails and more control on how the boat hits the waves.

That’s the configuration for Britain’s 470 team, which won silver at this year’s world championships and also features an Olympics veteran in Chris Grube, who competed in the Rio and Tokyo Games, with Vita Heathcote at the helm.

But the current world champions are changing the dynamic; Spain’s Jordi Xammar will be at the helm and Nora Brugman, a dual-citizen who campaigned to sail for the U.S. in the Tokyo Olympics, will be his crew.

“It’s really an experience for life, that teaches you a lot as a person,” said Xammar, who won a bronze medal in the men’s 470 at the last Games.

This summer, there will be four men’s sailing categories, four women’s, and two mixed; the 470 and the Nacra 17, a catamaran that became the first Olympic mixed-gender boat at the Rio Games.

“It gives me the chills” that these Olympics will be the first allowing men and women sailors equal medal opportunities, said Lara Dallman-Weiss, 35, who competed in the women’s 470 in the Tokyo Games and is going to be McNay’s crew for Paris.

Dallman-Weiss is no stranger to grit, too, having learned to sail through snow and on ice on the lakes of her native Minnesota.

For both U.S. athletes, however, the most grueling impact of their long-term commitment to Olympic competition has been on family life.

After a week of neck-and-neck trial regattas started on a squally January day, McNay and Dallman-Weiss celebrated their win at the Miami Yacht Club with his wife and children, and her parents. That was a rare moment together, they said, since global competition puts them on planes to far-flung locales most of the year.

“Each day you’re not with your family, you’re missing precious moments,” said McNay, whose two elementary school-age children can be quite “vocal” about how much they dislike dad leaving.

On her part, Dallman-Weiss has struggled with not being more present as her father fought with a cancer diagnosis or as her friends celebrated their newborns.

One baby she’s met — in fact, the 10-month-old boy was right there on shore in Miami waiting for the boats to be towed back into the bay at each day’s end — is the firstborn of her former women’s 470 Olympic partner, Nikki Barnes.

Barnes, a 30-year-old from the U.S. Virgin Islands, was breastfeeding exclusively when she started her campaign for the 2024 team, and even though she didn’t make it, she has started training for the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.

“It feels more equal than ever before,” Barnes said of these Games, although she believes women sailors still feel more pressure to prove they belong.

According to a May report by World Sailing, the sport’s global governing body, it’s an upwind battle to true gender balance, with women representing only 18% of coaches and support staff for the world championships, for instance.

As long as the focus isn’t on stereotypes about each gender’s different strengths, mixed events like the 470 promote equality by showing men and women working together for the medals, said Michele Donnelly, a professor of sports and gender at Brock University in Canada.

And “being on the podium and hearing the national anthem” is the dream that makes it all worthwhile for McNay and Dallman-Weiss.

That, and the sheer pleasure they get when they hit the water, even though they’ve sailed for decades.

“The moment you’re off the dock, big breath, life is good,” Dallman-Weiss said.

Added McNay: “It’s more fun than any waterpark could ever be.”

Navy rescues crew from merchant vessel struck by Houthis in Red Sea

sail yacht sea eagle

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Sailors from the Dwight D. Eisenhower carrier strike group airlifted the crew of a merchant vessel attacked by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in the Red Sea on Saturday, U.S. officials said.

The Liberian-flagged, Greek-owned bulk cargo carrier M/V Tutor was struck by a Houthi uncrewed surface vessel while sailing in the Red Sea on Wednesday, resulting in severe flooding and damage to the engine room, according to a Navy release.

The guided-missile cruiser USS Philippine Sea (CG 58) departs Naval Station Mayport, Fla., on Feb. 15, 2014, for a deployment in support of maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 5th and 6th Fleet areas of responsibility.

Navy helicopter evacuates mariner injured in Red Sea Houthi attack

The mariner was flown by a u.s. helicopter based on the uss philippine sea to another nearby ship for medical treatment..

“The crew abandoned ship and were rescued by USS Philippine Sea and partner forces,” U.S. Central Command said in a separate statement. “(The) Tutor remains in the Red Sea and is slowly taking on water.”

A helicopter from Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 74 airlifted 24 civilian mariners from the Tutor to the USS Philippine Sea, service officials said. They were then transported to the USS Eisenhower by helicopters from Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 7. After medical checks on the Eisenhower, the mariners were flown ashore for further care.

“Despite these senseless attacks on innocent mariners just doing their job, the Philippine Sea crew stand ready to help preserve safety of life at sea, always,” said Capt. Steven Liberty, Philippine Sea’s commanding officer, in a Navy release.

Aircraft from the USS Philippine Sea also medically evacuated a mariner injured in a separate Houthi attack on a different merchant vessel in the Gulf of Aden on Thursday.

Officials reported that one civilian mariner from the Tutor remained missing as of Sunday. The British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center stated Saturday afternoon that the vessel was “still on fire and sinking.”

The missing sailor is Filipino, according to the state-run Philippine News Agency, which cited Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac. He said most of the Tutor’s 22 mariners were from the Philippines.

“We’re trying to account for the particular seafarer in the ship and are praying that we could find him,” he said Friday night.

U.S. officials reported Saturday that the military had launched a wave of attacks targeting radar sites operated by Houthi rebels.

The attacks come as the U.S. Navy faces the most intense combat it has seen since World War II in trying to counter the Houthi campaign — attacks the rebels say are meant to halt the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip. However, the Iranian-backed rebel assaults often see the Houthis target ships and mariners who have nothing to do with the war while traffic remains halved through a corridor vital for cargo and energy shipments between Asia, Europe and the Mideast.

U.S. strikes destroyed seven radars within Houthi-controlled territory, the military’s Central Command said. It did not elaborate on how the sites were destroyed and did not immediately respond to questions from The Associated Press.

“These radars allow the Houthis to target maritime vessels and endanger commercial shipping,” Central Command said in a statement.

The U.S. separately destroyed two bomb-laden drone boats in the Red Sea, as well as a drone launched by the Houthis over the waterway, it said.

The Houthis, who have held Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, since 2014, did not acknowledge the strikes, nor any military losses. That’s been typical since the U.S. began launching airstrikes targeting the rebels.

Also on Saturday, Central Command said the vessel M/V Anna Meta rescued crew members from the cargo carrier M/V Verbena, which was struck Thursday in the Gulf of Aden off the coast of Yemen in two separate missile attacks by the Houthis.

The crew abandoned ship after being unable to bring fires on the vessel under control. One mariner was severely wounded.

CENTCOM said the Verbena is a Palauan-flagged, Ukrainian-owned and Polish-operated bulk cargo carrier that had docked in Malaysia and was on its way to Italy carrying wood.

The Houthis have launched more than 50 attacks on shipping , killed three mariners, seized one vessel and sunk another since November, according to the U.S. Maritime Administration. A U.S.-led airstrike campaign has targeted the Houthis since January, with a series of strikes May 30 killing at least 16 people and wounding 42 others, the rebels say.

The war in the Gaza Strip has killed more than 37,000 Palestinians there, according to Gaza health officials, while hundreds of others have been killed in Israeli operations in the West Bank. It began after Hamas-led militants attacked Israel on Oct. 7, killing about 1,200 people and taking around 250 hostage.

“The Houthis claim to be acting on behalf of Palestinians in Gaza and yet they are targeting and threatening the lives of third-country nationals who have nothing to do with the conflict in Gaza,” Central Command said. “The ongoing threat to international commerce caused by the Houthis in fact makes it harder to deliver badly needed assistance to the people of Yemen as well as Gaza.”

The attacks continued early Sunday as two explosions struck in close proximity to another ship in the Red Sea, though the ship and crew were safe, the British military said.
