Review: Silent 55, the extraordinary solar powered yacht

Yachting World

  • January 18, 2019

Silent Yachts is tapping into the solar zeitgeist and creating a new meaning for the term ‘powercat’.  Sam Fortescue reports

Silent Yachts Silent 55

There is a slow, silent revolution under way in the yachting world. It is a revolution that is introducing tonnes of lithium and a sprinkling of silicon to the spec list of new boats. Holding out the promise of silent mobility, plus limitless domestic power on board, it made a big splash at the last Cannes Festival of Yachting – not least thanks to the new Silent 55 catamaran which debuted there.

From the pontoon side, the Silent 55 looks like a typical modern catamaran, with a big coachroof studded with windows and a flybridge helm. Except there’s no mast. Now, bear with me here. I realise that this is a sailing magazine, but we will shortly get back to more familiar territory. The unique qualities of this catamaran only become apparent from up top, where an expanse of solar panels stretches away fore and aft, embedded into the coachroof. The hard top itself carries yet more panels, and can be folded down flush to give an unshaded solar array of 49m2. During the heat of a summer day in the Med, this is capable of generating 10kW of power and up to around 60kWh in the course of the day.

Silent Yachts Silent 55 exterior

But to make a solar system work in reality, Köhler had to go back to the drawing board on yacht design. The saloon and hulls have extra thermal insulation to keep air-con losses down, and the use of carbon and aramid in key areas helps reduce the overall weight to a decent 17 tonnes (a Lagoon 52 weighs 22.5 tonnes). He has tried to keep windows out of the direct sun with long overhangs and in contrast to the Lagoon’s 12 deck hatches, the Silent 55 has just two.

Holistic design

On the other hand, it has lots of opening windows, to allow a natural draught to do its job. “It’s a holistic approach – you can’t take the batteries and the drivetrain and drop it into another boat.”

Of course, using the propulsion system quickly takes its toll of the boat’s 140kW battery bank. The model on display at Cannes had two 135kW motors, giving you just half an hour of silent motoring flat-out, albeit at a top speed of over 20 knots. More reasonable 30kW engines and a single-digit speed give you greater range. Nonetheless, the electric drive alone isn’t going to allow you to outrun a storm, or race home after a day at anchor, so the boat is designed to work with a generator hidden in the heavily insulated transom of its starboard hull. At cruising speed of around 5-6 knots, Köhler says there is rarely any need to use the generator, citing an owner who has just emailed him triumphantly about a second year totally generator-free. “In the end, you have to compare it to the performance of a sailing boat,” Köhler says. “It is as fast as a sailing boat in similar conditions – after all, there is no wind without sun.” He went so far as to tell me during the sea trial in Palma, Mallorca, that he believed the majority of sailors would happily dispense with the hassle of sails and a rig if only they could enjoy silent motoring and anchoring. “As soon as people realise the incredible concept of this boat, they won’t understand why they ever did anything else.”

The market does not seem to agree with him – yet. Sales of the boat have been good – they have already sold six, five of which are already in the water. But of those, four customers have taken the sail option, which means planting a 19.7m tall mast complete with boom and rigging slap bang in the middle of the coachroof solar array. “I was a bit amazed,” Köhler admits. “The shade from the rig reduces the energy generated by the solar area, while it costs more and is heavier, so consumes more fuel. Maybe it is for optical reasons.” In fact, the shade of the rig slashes the average yield of the solar panels in half. In the Med, that means around 30kWh per day. But perhaps it figures. The typical profile of buyers is an environmentalist who has a Tesla electric car and is “an early adopter who likes to have things before others”. And at low speeds, with modest use of the air-con, the reduced energy generation should still cover daily consumption.

Silent Yachts Silent 55 Sail Version exterior

The performance under sail should be reasonable because of the lightweight build of the boat, its broad 8.47m beam and stub keels added to each hull. Control lines are led back via conduits in the coachroof to the flybridge helm station, to make single-handing under sail a possibility.

More interesting, I think, is a sort of halfway-house option using a kite rig. This optimises the performance of the solar panels and gives plenty of propulsion. On the smaller 55 and the 64, Silent Yachts currently recommends a 19m2 kite that costs around €25,000 – a fraction of the cost of a new mast, boom, shrouds and sails. “The sail automatically makes a figure of eight above the boat, and you can steer it with a joystick or an app on an android phone,” Köhler explains. “It can propel the 55 at up to 6 knots, even in light winds.” Perfect for an Atlantic crossing, then.

For the bigger Silent 79, which will hit the water in the summer, a commercial grade Sky Sail system needs to be used – a smaller version of the ones used on cargo ships. This kite can propel the boat at ten knots, but it costs more than ten times as much as its smaller cousin. Both are capable of pulling the boat upwind. So far, so new. But outside the novel energy and propulsion system, the Silent 55 aims to do what many other cruising catamarans are trying to achieve. “Most of our clients order for circumnavigation and long-term cruising,” Köhler says. So the boat is aimed to be as comfortable and capable as possible with watermakers, TVs and an induction hob that all capitalise on the boat’s abundant energy. A flexible configuration allows owners the choice
of between three and six cabins – the latter designed for charter. The owner’s cabin lies forward of the saloon, under the windows of the coachroof, which provide magnificent views and abundant natural light. There’s a walk-around bed and steps down into the starboard hull give access to an en-suite shower room and heads.

Silent Yachts Silent 55 master cabin

In my view, the best cabin lies aft of this, accessed in the traditional manner down steps out of the saloon. The king-sized bed lies athwartships and the shower is larger than that of the master cabin. There’s more space down here, better headroom and still plenty of light courtesy of the many hull lights.

Silent Yachts Silent 55 guest cabin

When I had the chance to sea trial the Silent 55, albeit in motorboat format, I jumped at it. It was a contrary autumn day on Mallorca with 15 knots breeze – just a shame, then, that this wasn’t one of the sailing configured versions.

To start with, getting on board is made really easy courtesy of deep boarding platforms on the skirts. She feels rather square because of that vast, glazed saloon with its deep overhang, and perhaps because of the utilitarian nature of the hard top, which is really about supporting more solar panels. Nevertheless, the side decks are broad and uncluttered. The space up top is designed to concertina down flat, hence the hydraulic rams, fold-down seat back and lowering console. It makes a great sailing position, though, with all round visibility, and is also perfect for sundowners at anchor. When the rain comes down, this feels quite exposed, but there is a fully sheltered helm at the front of the saloon, and it is also possible to drive the boat from anywhere using a tablet thanks to smart electronics. Under power, the handling is superb. The quietness of the motors is astonishing, and I gather they’ll be inaudible on the next boat, which will do away with the gearbox. Even in the aft cabins, directly above the motors, there is no more than a distant hum. The boat responds instantly to the power and the wind seemed to have no impact at all. As with any propulsion system, the power consumption jumps as you pile on the speed – it was sobering to see. At 6 knots, both motors drew 10kW but at 8 knots it was closer to 30kW. I liked the huge saloon with its raised table for 360º views. And the sliding door and window gives great access aft, connecting the saloon and cockpit in fine conditions. The finish was smart and in muted tones, feeling more Scandinavian than German.

Intriguingly, at least it seems to me, Köhler has tapped into something with the concept behind Silent Yachts – but not entirely for the reasons that he expected. Buyers are opting for the sail or kite versions of the boat because they want a comfortable wind-powered craft with abundant, quiet energy on tap. It brings a whole new meaning to the
term ‘powercat’

Silent-Yachts will stage the world premiere of the Silent 60 at the Cannes Yachting Festival from September 7-12. The first unit was built at the PMG Shipyard in Rayong, Thailand, which produces the model, as do Silent’s facilities in Italy. As of June, eight more hulls were under construction among over a dozen orders, complemented by several orders for the Silent 62 3-Deck.

The Silent 60 has an overall length of 59ft and a beam of 29ft 6in. Hull one is being delivered to a German owner in Mallorca , where the boat will be available for charter.

It includes a 13sqm kite wing from Wingit, which has a 150m line and can pull the 30-tonne boat with about 4-5 knots, reducing consumption. The kite-sail system is stored in the bow and is an option on all new Silent models, which include the 80 and 80 3-deck.

Silent-Yachts, Silent 60 and a first ever tender in Cannes

silent yachts cannes

Silent-Yachts is preparing for the autumn boat shows with two debuts scheduled for the Cannes Yachting Festival from September 6-11, 2022.

The first SILENT 60 fitted with a kite wing will be on display in Cannes. The light, easy-to-use compact kite wing generates up to 10 times more power per square metre than a conventional sail.

silent yachts cannes

Launched from a fold-away mast structure on the foredeck, the kite wing offers e xtra propulsion, being capable of pulling the 30-ton SILENT 60 with a speed of 4-5 knots. Furthermore, it reduces the consumption of e-motors, thus extending the range. It also offers redundancy .

silent yachts cannes

If a fishing line gets entangled in the propellers, for example, the kite can serve as a reserve propulsion that enables the boat to get to a protected place where the rope can be cut and the prop set free.

Moreover, the solar-powered catamaran carries 42 solar panels for 17 kWp of solar energy to drive two electric motors of up to 2x340kw.

silent yachts cannes

With a battery capacity of up to 286 kWh , the yacht can cruise efficiently with zero emissions solely on solar power for up to 100 nautical miles a day for weeks. Featuring a new, high-performance hull form with a longer waterline and reverse bow, the yacht has a cruising speed of 6-8 knots , but can reach up to 20 knots .

Guest accommodation comprises four guest cabins on the lower deck, including a spacious master suite, but other layout solutions are available. There are numerous social areas on board, including an airy main salon, an aft cockpit, a flybridge and a cosy bow area. The yacht also has high headroom throughout (up to 2.32m in the main salon).

It is available with two different electric drivetrains. Option one is an electric jet drive. Alternatively, the ST400 can also be equipped with a conventional electric outboard engine with up to 30 kW. Both systems enable a top speed of above 20 kn.

silent yachts cannes

A larger SILENT Tender is already being planned.

“I’m immensely proud of what SILENT-YACHTS has achieved over the years and the first SILENT Tender 400 is just the latest innovation in our sustainability journey, ” says SILENT-YACHTS founder and CEO Michael Köhler . “After starting with research into solar yacht technology, we have evolved and expanded both our product lines and production space. But we remain true to our roots of harnessing new technology and clean energy to promote sustainability.”

The catamaran debuting at Cannes sports an open sky lounge with a bar, a galley, a 12-seat dining table, a fly helm, and numerous sofas. On the decks below lie four beautifully appointed staterooms, a generous crew cabin, and a sprawling main salon of 164 square feet.

Outside, the cat has lounges in the aft and bow for alfresco entertaining and a hydraulic stern platform that can accommodate a vessel of up to 13 feet, like, say, the electric Silent Tender 400. Additional toys can be stowed in the bridge deck.

Silent 80 3-Deck Open Electric Catamaran

Like the rest of the Silent fleet, the 62-footer can cruise silently and sans emissions. Designed and engineered by the in-house team, the multihull showcases a sleek exterior and a high-performance reverse bow that can cut through the waves. She is also equipped with two 340 kW e-motors, a 150 kW diesel generator, a 286 kWh lithium battery, and 42 powerful solar panels capable of generating up to 17 kWp.

Silent says the self-sufficient cruiser has an unlimited range and is able to cover 100 miles per day using energy from the sun. As a result, the running costs of the cat are significantly lower compared to traditional, diesel-powered motor yachts. She can cruise at between six and eight knots or soar to a top speed of between 18 and 19 knots

If you’d like to see the cat in action, Cannes Yachting Festival is taking place from September 12 to 17.

Silent 60 first look: Sleek new electric catamaran makes a lot of sense

  • Top stories

If you’re interested in electric boating then a catamaran might be the way to go, with slim, relatively-low drag hulls and expansive deck and roof areas for solar panels.

Headquartered in Austria with manufacturing plants in the Far East and Italy, Silent Yachts’ new Silent 60 comes with a pair of electric motors of 170kW each, battery capacity of up to 286kWh, and solar panels capable of generating 17kWp (the ‘p’ stands for peak, or optimum sunny conditions), for a claimed cruising range at six to eight knots of around 100 nautical miles.

Naturally there are diesel generators too, both for battery charging and for powering the electric motors, in which case the 60’s maximum speed is 20 knots, with a cruising range defined by the size of the fuel tanks.

A variety of internal layouts is offered, with up to six cabins in the hulls, all ensuite, and including one for crew, plus the option of a big owner’s suite spanning the bridge deck up at the bow.

The main deck saloon is of course a spectacular space, with acres of seating and floor area, windows all round, and an optional door at the front onto the foredeck.

The deck spaces are as generous as you would expect of a boat that is nearly 30ft wide and some tweaks to the flybridge improve comfort levels over the Silent 55.

The hydraulic hard top is carried over, which clamps down flat to the deck to securely close off the top deck and maximise the efficiency of the array of solar panels.

The Silent 60 also comes with a kitesail as an auxiliary power source, which is flown from a stanchion and winch assembly on the foredeck. The standard size sail is 9m2, with 13m2 as an option. For comparison, the sails you see off windy beaches being flown by mad kitesurfers typically range in area from 5m2 to 15m2.

Its builder claims that the 29-ton Silent 60 can make four to five knots powered by the kite alone.

Silent 80: Hybrid yacht pioneer reveals bold plans for first electric superyacht

We know this boat’s predecessor, the Silent 55, well here on MBY. Deputy editor, Jack, spent a few days on board in 2019 to see if Silent Yachts ’ claims of noise and emission-free cruising rang true.

His time aboard the Silent 55 proved that the boat’s revolutionary power management and propulsion systems worked, but the boat itself needed improvements. The Silent 60 aims to fix this with a redesigned hull that has a longer waterline and reverse bow to improve efficiency, and styling by Albert Nazarov that apes the flagship Silent 80 .

The Silent 55’s awkward looks have been replaced by a design that is far kinder on the eye and makes room for even more living space plus a boost in solar power acreage on the roof from 30 to 42 panels.

Silent Yachts Teases The Silent 62 Three-Deck Ahead Of Its Cannes Yachting Festival Debut

Monohulls are the way to go when you want a ship that flaunts a traditional outline. In fact, more luxury yacht owners prefer this configuration. However, despite the popularity, clients need to be mindful of the caveats that come with the package. On the other hand, catamarans offer more flexibility when it comes to customization as you can see here on the Silent 62 Three-Deck.

One of the limitations shipbuilders must take into account with monohulls is the height and width of the superstructure. Without proper weight distribution and stability systems in place, it can possibly cause watercraft to keel over in rough sea conditions. As such, Silent Yachts chooses a twin-hull blueprint for their new model.

The Austrian yard unveiled its latest entry – an upgraded version of their Silent 60 – pegged to make its public debut at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival. As the name suggests, its amenities and features span across three decks. With a little over a month left before its big reveal, here are some fascinating details about the Silent 62 Three-Deck.

Firstly, this triple-deck vessel is called what it is for a reason. Although we couldn’t call it a completely emission-free platform due to its 150 kW diesel generator, the Silent 62 Three-Deck can run on solar power exclusively. 42 solar panels installed on the exterior harvest clean energy which is then stored by a 286 kWh battery.

Two 340 kW electric motors can push it up to speeds of 19 knots. As for the range, Silent Yachts says it can cruise up to 100 miles a day on solar power exclusively. As for the layout across all its decks, clients can fully customize these spaces according to their tastes. However, the Silent 62 Three-Deck at the 2023 Cannes Yachting Festival will showcase a standard setup.

From an 80-ft. power cat covered with solar panels to a 55-foot weekender that tops 65 mph, this year’s event has a range of styles and new technologies.

The Cannes Yachting Festival returns with a collection of 650 boats ranging from 16  to 164 feet. Divided between Vieux Port for motoryachts and Port Canto for sailing yachts, the event has been modified this year with a new flotilla for boats up to 36 feet.

Around 54,000 visitors are expected to descend on the tony French Riviera port from September 12 to 17 to walk the docks and focus on the latest launches.

Here is our preview of 15 great yachts making their global debuts.

ISA, ‘UV II’

Conceived from the drawingboard of Enrico Gobbi’s Team for Design, with an interior by Luca Dini, the 145-foot  UV II  was delivered earlier this year but is now for sale via Fraser Yachts. The plumb bow, sleek profile, and radar arch gives the boat a sporty appearance. The boat has five staterooms, including a master suite and two VIP staterooms, with exterior features like an unusually wide beach club at the stern, a main-deck Jacuzzi and lounge, and a second lounge on the upper deck.

wallywhy150

The wallywhy150 is the second model in its Why series, following the 2021 launch of the wallywhy200. The raised pilothouse design offers exceptional interior space, while still focusing on the exterior. The main salon has floor-to-ceiling glass, with more than eight feet of headroom. Wally designers also opted to incorporate just one helm topsides, which frees up space for the owner’s cabin on the main deck. Following on the wallywhy200’s design, the owner’s bed has a 270-degree view of the water through the bow. It’s a smart use of space, giving the owners the best views in the house. On the lower deck are three guest cabins or, if the owner wants, two larger VIP staterooms.

Southern Wind Nyumba 15 Best Launches at the Cannes Yachting Festival

Southern Wind ‘Nyumba’

Southern Wind’s 96 series  Nyumba  (meaning home in Swahili) is the South African builder’s first hybrid sailing yacht. The vessel is being shown publicly for the first time at Cannes but has already done a 7,500-mile voyage from Cape Town to Malta. The boat features a system that allows for zero-emissions cruising and extended range under power.

80 Sunreef Power Eco 16 Best Launches at the Cannes Yachting Festival

Photo : Sunreef

80 Sunreef Power Eco

Described by Sunreef as “the world’s most advanced electric motoryacht,” the 80 Sunreef Power Eco centers around the brand’s commitment to sustainability and green technology. The solar-powered catamaran is equipped with two 180kW engines and a 440kWh battery bank that was designed to be lightweight. Solar cells are built into almost every conceivable space on the hull and superstructure, regulated by a smart energy management system. Even the furniture on this four-stateroom catamaran is made of sustainable flax fiber. Still, there are luxe features like a Jacuzzi on the bow terrace and a garage for water toys.

Azimut S7 15 Best Launches at the Cannes Yachting Festival

Photo : Azimut Yachts

The 71-foot Azimut S7 is a technologically advanced sports coupe with fast navigation. The hard-chine hulled yacht joins the shipyard’s growing family of low emission yachts, pairing easy handling with the lowest fuel consumption in its category. And it does so without compromising on performance. Powered by three compact Volvo Penta D13 IPS 1050 engines with 800 hp each, the S7 reaches a top speed of 35 knots. Seamless glazing runs along the length of the superstructure uniting the Alberto Mancini–designed exterior with the open-plan interior. A key feature is the open “sportfly” upper deck, which gives the best views on board.

Photo : Evo Yachts

Designed by Valerio Rivellini and set to debut at Cannes, the 59-foot sporty Evo R+ builds on the last-generation Evo R. It is conceived for long stays on board. A closed deck with generous headroom provides comfort and shelter. A large stern platform is where guests sunbathe, socialize, and have access the sea, as well as facilitate the easy launch and retrieval of the boat’s tender. More sun lounging is at the bow, while the black aluminum hardtop gives the R+ a sporty-looking profile. Its shallow draft allows access to small bays and sandy shores.

Photo : Apreamare

Apreamare 35 Gozzo Speedster

Italy’s Apreamare has taken the “Gozzo” style far beyond the traditional, rounded-chine fishing boats of nearby Sorrento and created contemporary dayboats and cruisers with deep-V hulls. While there are hints of the centuries-old Gozzo look on the slightly rounded bow and stern, the Apreamare series are in every other sense modern planing vessels. With its walkaround design that should do well in the U.S. market, the new Gozzo 35 Speedster is jumping into the outboard craze with a vengeance, with two Mercury 400-hp V10s on the stern. That delivers a 42-knot top speed, but dialed back to 30 knots, it has a range of 300 nautical miles.

Riva 82 Diva 15 Yachts Launching at Cannes Yachting Festival

Photo : Riva Yachts

Riva 82 Diva

The Riva 82 Diva is the new entry-level model in the Italian shipyard’s flybridge range. Despite its compact size, it offers the same level of outdoor livability found aboard the four larger models. Focus is placed on the flybridge, which offers three separate spaces: a central lounge complete with dinette and bar, a sunbathing area forward, and a second lounge area. When guests want to be closer to the water, a large beach club with oversized sunpads on the aft deck answers the call. Officina Italiana Design did the interior and exterior, while Ferretti Group’s naval architects gave it a speedy 31-knot top end.

Photo : Centounonavi

Centounonavi Vespro 55

This 55-footer from Italy comes from Centounoavi, a new brand that translates as “one hundred and one boats.” Go figure. While the name may not make sense, cofounder Marco Arnaboldi is the son of Angelo Arnaboldi, who built a successful go-fast yacht empire called AB Yachts. Marco’s Vespro has a contemporary look and retains the focus on speed, with top end reaching 56 knots (64 mph) and cruise of 50 knots (57.5 mph.) All that speed comes from 1,200 hp MAN diesels connected to MJP 350X waterjets. The Vespro either makes a great day boat or weekend cruiser, with the extra oomph to get offshore and back to port quickly.

Photo : Pershing Yachts

Pershing GTX116

The first hull in Pershing’s new GTX line makes its world debut at Cannes this year. Described by the shipyard as a sport utility yacht, the 115-foot GTX116 combines volume with comfort with more than 1600 feet of open-air space designed to enhance the connection with its surroundings. A gray hull and customized blue superstructure are mated to glossy interior surfaces reflecting natural sunlight that make the rooms feel brighter and larger, including the five staterooms. Designed by Fulvio De Simoni, Pershing’s sporty DNA is evident in the boat’s streamlined profile, pointy bow, storage for toys and equipment at the stern, and a large swim platform for guests to access the water.

Photo : Arcadia Yachts

Arcadia Yachts A96

Designer Igor Lobanov is renowned for his arresting superyacht exteriors, yet his eye for interiors comes to the fore in the new Arcadia Yachts A96. According to the Italian shipyard, its latest 95-footer is geared toward owners who are looking for “an authentically holistic experience of wellbeing on the water.” The flexible layout includes five guest cabins, with accommodations for a crew of five. A key feature are the large, glazed windows that slide open to let the outdoors in. Noise and vibration are kept to a minimum in the guest areas, thanks to the boat’s Volvo Penta IPS propulsion system located near the stern. The vessel has joystick maneuverability for maneuvering and electric fin stabilizers for comfort. The boat’s draft and compact engine size also make it suitable for cruising in shallow waters.

Photo : Sanlorenzo Yachts

Sanlorenzo SX100

Making its world premiere at Cannes is Sanlorenzo’s full custom SX100. Forming part of the brand’s crossover range, it has signature fold-down terraces and a large open transom that serves as both a sundeck area and beach club for socializing. It also houses a large collection of water toys, including a 19-foot tender. The owner requested a large main salon with floor-to-ceiling windows that bring the outdoors in. Sea terraces behind the two top decks offer private areas for relaxing. The five guest cabins, include an owner’s suite and VIP. The vessel was designed to have a large footprint on a smaller scale.

Photo : Bluegame Yachts

Bluegame BGM75

Bluegame is a brand on seeking to break free of conventional categories. Its first catamaran, the BGM75, debuts at Cannes this year. The 75-footer is spread across two hulls, yet the builder eschews the multihull label. It believes the boat’s reduced beam and “less boxy” design, not to mention the fact that the two hulls are not visibly separate, places it closer to the monohull segment. Either way, the boat offers owners stability, reduced fuel consumption, and large volume, including a full-beam owner’s cabin. A spacious beach area, large salon, and connected cockpits complete the new take on multihull design.

15 Best Launches at the Cannes Yachting Festival

Photo : Sirena Yachts

Sirena Yachts sold 18 slots of its new Sirena 48 before the first hull even touched water. Making its world debut at Cannes, the 52-footer gives owners a range of customizable layouts. This includes the choice of a closed aft seating area or an open plan stern layout. Owners also have the option to install a hardtop on the flybridge, with enough solar panels to power the boat’s hotel load. A semi-displacement hull delivers fast planing performance yet can be put into displacement mode for more efficient cruising.

15 Best Launches at the Cannes Yachting Festival

Photo : Silent Yachts

The Silent 62 making its world debut at Cannes is the first tri-decked solar electric catamaran from Silent Yachts. Based on the Silent 60 platform, the boat’s 6.5-foot length extension provides 538-square-foot of extra space. The additional third deck, which replaces the retractable flybridge found on previous models, comes with three different layout options: an open sky lounge, a closed sky lounge, or an owner’s suite. The Silent 62 is equipped with 42 solar panels achieving up to 17 kWp, which gives the yacht up to 100 miles daily cruising, reduced fumes and vibrations, and a silent cruise when in electric mode. The yacht’s optional hydraulic stern platform doubles as a swim platform and can accommodate an 18-foot tender.

SILENT-YACHTS sells first unit of its new flagship - the SILENT 100 Explorer

The first silent 100 explorer has been sold after its unveiling at the 2021 cannes yachting festival….

Image for article SILENT-YACHTS sells first unit of its new flagship - the SILENT 100 Explorer

After unveiling a new flagship model, the SILENT 100 Explorer, at the 2021 Cannes Yachting Festival, Austrian-based SILENT-YACHTS has already sold the first unit with a scheduled delivery in 2023.

“This new sale coming after the sale of three of our 80-foot models in rapid succession and confirms the market’s interest in the superior comfort of catamarans and solar energy for propulsion needs, as well as all the household appliances on board,” says SILENT-YACHTS founder and CEO, Michael Köhler.

Like all SILENT yachts, the four-deck Silent 100 Explorer has a solar-electric drive train that preserves the purity of the ocean and embraces the sound of silence for enhanced guest comfort. Similar to the SILENT 64 (the first ever solar powered production boat by SILENT-YACHTS to cross the Atlantic ocean in January 2018) and all other SILENT models, the SILENT 100 Explorer is designed to have worldwide cruising capabilities.

The yacht measures 31 metres overall with a beam of 13.62 metres and a height of 10.46 metres. Renewable electric energy comes from an array of solar panels in the hardtop that slides apart to reveal a sundeck that can also serve as a touch-and-go helipad. Compared to the previous flagship, the SILENT 80, the new SILENT 100 Explorer has an extra deck and much more space both outdoors and indoors. For example, the master suite of the SILENT 100 Explorer is 51sq m, while the same cabin of the SILENT 80 is 27sq m. The aft outside areas’ comparison is 105sq m against 61sq m.

“The SILENT 100 Explorer is a great challenge proving that the solar revolution of SILENT-YACHTS to the superyacht level,” said designer Marco Casali. “The kind of available spaces, fully customisable from the clients, will allow unique internal and external spaces not even achievable on much bigger superyachts like owner's quarters or large saloons. The SILENT 100 Explorer will bring the experience of cruising to a next level becoming a world reference for a responsible yachting always connected to the respect of the environment.”

Clean energy

The solar cells provide up to 40kWp and clean solar electrical energy is stored in a battery bank with a capacity of up to 800 kWh. Coupled to twin 340kW (@700 rpm) electric motors, the SILENT 100 Explorer has an economic speed of 6-8 knots, a cruising speed of 10 knots and a top speed of 14-16 knots.

Two or three diesel generators, depending on the specification requested, provide back-up auxiliary power. Because the solar energy is completely renewable, in theory the SILENT 100 Explorer has unlimited range, similar to all other SILENT models.

Space to spare

Although the SILENT 100 Explorer is just over 30 metres in length, it has a gross tonnage of 440GT with outdoor and indoor living space that are equivalent to a monohull motoryacht of between 40-50 metres.

This abundance of space typical for multihulls means that the SILENT 100 Explorer boasts five ensuite guest cabins on the main deck and in the starboard hull, in addition to an enormous full-beam master stateroom with private office on the main deck forward.

The aft section on the main deck is devoted to a very spacious salon and dining area, while the open aft deck with hot tub is set up for sunbathing with a panoramic balcony over the transom, bar and breakfast table.

The wheelhouse is on the upper deck (with connecting captain’s cabin), where there is also a sky lounge and bar with al fresco dining facilities for a full complement of guests on the open aft deck.

The fly deck has more sunbathing space, a wet bar, a second helm station and the aforementioned space under the sliding solar panels that can be used for helicopter operations or as an open-air gym, for example.

A spiral staircase for the exclusive use of the guests links all the deck levels.

Top service

The galley, crew quarters (including a crew mess) and hotel services are all housed in the portside hull. The crew has a dedicated staircase to access all deck levels so as not to disturb the guests.

There is even room for an 7.5 metre limo tender garage between the two hulls and a smaller crew tender and toys in side-loading garage in the portside hull.

“The sheer amount of family-friendly space aboard the Silent 100 Explorer has to be experienced to be believed,” says Michael Köhler. “It also means that clients are free to customise the arrangement according to personal preference. Do you want a gym or media room, a larger VIP suite or a country kitchen on main deck? No problem. The flexibility of the catamaran configuration means we can meet most requests.”

The brand-new SILENT 120 Explorer has arrived!

An homage back to the days when the brave were constantly seeking unknown horizons – the same way it took an unbroken adventurous spirit to explore the seven seas beyond the limit of one´s imagination, it took a lot of courage to envision and develop the solar electric drivetrain. Solar-Powered Silent 55 Prepares for Debut

  • By Kim Kavin
  • Updated: September 5, 2018

silent yachts 55

Austria-based Silent-Yachts is on track for the world premiere of the Silent 55 at September’s Cannes Yachting Festival.

The Silent 55 — a solar-powered catamaran — will be the new entry-level model in the builder’s lineup, which also includes a Silent 64 and a Silent 79.

Heike and Michael Köhler founded Silent-Yachts after launching the Solarwave 46 in 2009. It was billed as “the first fully self-sufficient bluewater catamaran.” The pair have spent 5,000 days cruising more than 75,000 miles all around the world, proving their concepts.

With the Silent 55, several power configurations are available. The Cruiser package has a pair of 30 kW motors. The E-Power version includes twin 250 kW motors. The Hybrid Power package combines twin 220-horsepower diesel engines and two 14 kW electric motors. The Sailor edition has any of the above plus a mast and sails.

In all configurations, there are 30 solar panels aboard, each one rated for about a 9 kW peak. Maximum power-point tracking is used to regulate the solar charge, which feeds into lithium batteries that have enough capacity for all-night cruising, according to the builder. A 15 kVA inverter powers onboard appliances.

silent yachts 55

“What this represents to the yachtsman, among other features, is the ability to cruise for many hours at normal speed, and throughout the entire day and evening at reduced speed,” Michael Köhler, CEO of Silent-Yachts, stated in a press release. “Silent-Yachts sets the standard for an entirely new dynamic and a new class in yachting, combining the advantages of a sailing boat (silence, powered by free, natural energy) with the luxury of a motorboat (power available whenever needed). Pure solar-powered luxury.”

silent yachts 55

Five layouts are available aboard the Silent 55. They range from three to six staterooms, with three or four heads.

How is the Silent 55 built? With vacuum-bagged resin infusion. The hull is reinforced with carbon fiber at stress points, and uses vinylester resin to prevent osmotic blistering.

Technologies enabling silence

The cornerstone of Sialia’s silent operation is its electric propulsion system. Complemented by a range of noise-dampening materials and innovative design techniques, together reduce both mechanical and environmental noise.

Key technologies and their functions:

  • Electric propulsion systems: Eliminates engine noise and vibrations for a smooth, silent ride, enhancing the natural ambiance onboard.
  • Noise-dampening materials: State-of-the-art materials in the hull and superstructure absorb sound from water turbulence and wind, maintaining low noise levels even at high speeds.
  • Advanced hydrodynamic design: Efficient hull design reduces water resistance and turbulence, minimizing noise from water interaction.
  • Isolation techniques: Specialized mounts absorb vibrations from critical systems, preventing noise transmission through the yacht’s structure.

These technologies contribute significantly to the uniquely silent experience aboard a Sialia yacht. The result is an exceptionally quiet yacht that allows for uninterrupted enjoyment of the marine environment and peaceful relaxation.

Silent yacht technology

The tranquility aboard Sialia yachts stems from our sophisticated electric propulsion systems.  These systems provide a silent yet powerful driving force, enhancing the yachting experience.

Technical insights into electric propulsion:

  • Advanced motor design: Sialia yachts are powered by dual 400kW electric motors operating at a nominal voltage of 666VDC. These high-performance motors provide instant torque and maintain high efficiency across varying speeds.
  • Energy efficiency: Designed for maximum energy conversion efficiency, the electric motors minimize energy loss and extend the yacht’s range, contributing to a quieter, longer-lasting ride.

Precision engineering ensures these electric motors generate minimal vibration. Fluid dynamics and vibration-damping materials isolate and absorb sound, preventing it from transmitting through the yacht’s structure.

At Cannes, the ad industry contemplates its AI future with a mix of hope and fear

I’m writing today’s newsletter from the Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity , the annual confab where advertising and marketing honchos meet on the Riviera to sip rosé, hand out awards, and talk about the future. This year, AI was top of mind for many attendees, as it has been for executives in almost every industry since ChatGPT debuted in November 2022.

As with those in other industries, creative agencies want AI—but they want it on their own terms. At Cannes, many of the world’s biggest agencies—WPP, Publicis, Havas, and Dentsu—announced plans to use AI. Some of these agencies say AI is already helping them to mock up campaigns and storyboard spots. Some are using AI models to test ads—predicting their likely impact on different audience segments. And some are using the technology to create full campaigns.

But agencies’ race towards AI is driven as much by fear as it is by opportunity. AI may let brands bypass them entirely and use AI to design their own campaigns. At the very least, they worry AI will challenge a business model in which the agencies traditionally charged based on people hours. In a world where generative AI supercharges productivity, traditional agency pricing models that were based on the human labor required for a campaign will be increasingly untenable, accelerating a trend towards performance-based pricing that is already well underway.

And, of course, everyone working at agencies is worried about what AI will mean for their own jobs. At Cannes, that anxiety was evident just beneath the surface. At a breakfast event Fortune cohosted with Meta, a number of marketing executives asked me privately what I thought AI’s impact on jobs would be—both in the ad industry and more broadly. Ahead of the festival, advertising agency Publicis released a video meant to be—according to Publicis CEO Arthur Sadoun—a “not so serious” take on creative agencies’ AI obsession. The video poked fun at “old Mad Men pitching AI,” offering assurances that “our people will be fine,” but that soon switched to “here a cut, there a cut, everyone gets cut.” The video ended with the tagline “Imagine if we all took the BS out of AI?” I thought the video was mildly amusing—and landed some valid points with its snark. But, according to an article in trade publication Campaign , the ad cut a little too close to the bone for some industry executives.

With AI, agencies are finding themselves, not for the first time, in the “frenemies” zone with tech companies—both partnering with them and heavily dependent on them as a marketing channel and yet potentially competing with them too. All along the beach at Cannes, Big Tech—companies such as Google, Meta, Snap, and TikTok—used their big tents to showcase their latest ad tech, touting new AI-powered tools for ad development and placement.

At the Fortune -Meta breakfast event, Erik Hawkins, Meta’s vice president for global partners, pointed out that brands that use Meta’s AI tools on average see a 22% increase in return on every marketing dollar they spend. Many of Meta’s AI tools simplify back-end processes and allow for more precision targeting of ads. But some of them can also be used to generate a wider, more diverse range of marketing content too. Hawkins said that as these tools gain wider use, making sure they are used responsibly is becoming more important, and that Meta had joined dozens of other big companies, academic institutions, and nonprofits in forming the AI Alliance that is supporting open research and open science using AI.

At Cannes, many brands were divided on the use of generative AI to produce campaign content. They’ve watched as some companies such as Levi’s and Victoria’s Secret have faced consumer backlash after using AI to create marketing imagery. In both cases, the campaigns were meant to portray the brands as diverse and body-positive. But they faced objections that the use of generative AI belied that message because it deprived real human body-positive and minority models of work. Some brands, including H&M, L’Oreal, and Lego, have barred the use of generative AI in marketing materials. But others such as candymaker Mars and cosmetics giant Estée Lauder are jumping in with both feet—using generative AI technology to help hone marketing content or brainstorm marketing concepts.

My own prediction is that brand hesitancy over generative AI will crumble over the next few years, as those experimenting with the technology demonstrate its ROI and figure out how to sidestep the ethical pitfalls.

But I couldn’t help thinking at Cannes this year that the ad industry has still not fully internalized the magnitude of the platform shift that is about to hit them. If AI chatbots and assistants become our primary means of accessing the internet, and of conducting e-commerce (which is likely to happen as AI models improve), how brands will reach consumers is going to change profoundly. It won’t be about reaching consumers online anymore, because they won’t be there—their AI assistants will be there in their stead. Already publishers are talking about licensing deals with companies such as OpenAI and Google, that will see their content used more prominently in chatbot responses. Both tech companies have broached the idea of displaying ads against chatbot responses. But if people just send their AI agents out to do their shopping, booking, and buying for them, brands may find their direct access to the consumer diminished and attenuated.

At Cannes, the tide was turning. But it wasn’t clear those partying in the beach tents and on the yachts had noticed.

With that, here’s more AI news.

AI IN THE NEWS

McDonald’s deep-sixes drive-thru AI experiment but says AI order-taking will still happen. In a sign that it remains stubbornly difficult to add AI to products millions of consumers depend on, McDonald’s ended a partnership with IBM in which it experimented with voice AI order-taking at the drive-thru. According to Restaurant Business , More than 100 restaurants had been part of the pilot. But the fast-food giant did not close the drive-thru window on future voice AI ordering options, saying it would evaluate other solutions by the end of the year.

The International Monetary Fund warns of labor disruptions and rising inequality due to generative AI. According to the Financial Times , the International Monetary Fund said it had “profound concerns” about massive labor disruptions and rising inequality as societies move towards generative AI, and it urged governments to do more to protect their economies. In a report published on Monday, the fund said countries should act such as improving unemployment insurance, warning that, unlike past disruptive technologies, AI could lead to job losses in higher-skilled occupations.

TikTok introduces customizable digital avatars and language dubbing features to "add a human touch." T he Verge reported that TikTok is debuting new generative AI options for brands and content creators to spin up customizable digital avatars and language dubbing features. But far from implying that social media influencers would outsource their posts to their avatar counterparts, the company said the new tools are meant to expand language options and intended to “add a human touch” to content that would not have included human models or presenters.

EYE ON AI RESEARCH

AI-generated video is about to exit the 'silent film' era. All those cool AI-generated videos out there from OpenAI, Runway, and other startups have one thing in common: They are typically silent. So how can you add just the right sound effects and music to your creations? Google DeepMind shared its progress on video-to-audio AI that can generate soundscapes synchronized to on-screen action. Researchers said the technology, which uses video pixels and text prompts, will pair with video generation models to create shots with a dramatic score, realistic sound effects, or dialogue that matches the characters and tone of a video. It can also generate soundtracks from traditional footage including archival material and silent films.

What a headless flamingo says about authenticity in the generative AI age. In times past, a photo of a seemingly headless flamingo would likely have triggered feelings of wonder, awe, and curiosity. Now, many of us might simply think—AI. But in a turnabout twist , a photo of a beheaded puffy pink bird on long, pink legs was honored in a photography contest’s AI category, but promptly disqualified when the photographer revealed that the photo was real—the feathered friend was simply having a scratch. The Washington Post spoke to photographer Miles Astray, who said he captured the photo two years ago in Aruba. “My goal was to show that nature is just so fantastic and creative, and I don’t think any machine can beat that,” Astray said. “But, on the other hand, AI imagery has advanced to a point where it’s indistinguishable from real photography. So where does that leave us? What are the implications and the pitfalls of that? I think that is a very important conversation that we need to be having right now.”
