Spain Yachting: When to Go

The Spanish coast and Balearic Islands enjoy a classic Mediterranean climate: hot, dry summers and mild, sometimes rainy winters. And while it is accessible all year long, summer is prime yachting season in Spain, most notably in July and August. These peak months offer hot, sunny days and mild water temperatures that are perfect for outdoor adventures.

In the shoulder season months of May-June and September, the weather and conditions are excellent for yachting, as well. Temperatures hover in the mid-70s, with steady breezes and moderate swells. The shoulder season also offers a reprieve from the crowds of July and August.

Spain Yacht Charters – Where to Go

Spain yacht charters

The majority of Spain yacht charters cruise the Balearic Islands. Regarded for their golden beaches, glimmering bays, and lively harbors, the Balearics – Mallorca, Ibiza, Formentera, and Menorca – are one of Europe’s best destinations for a private yacht charter.

The largest of the Balearic Islands, Mallorca is a stunningly beautiful island, known for its lush, mountainous interior and picturesque seaside villages. Tucked away in the interior, you’ll find countless olive groves, vineyards, and almond groves – a perfect afternoon escape – while the harbors are filled with incredible restaurants, historic Gothic buildings, and excellent shopping.

The most famous of the Balearic Islands, Ibiza is renowned for its vibrant nightlife – the best in all of Europe. Along the streets of Ibiza Town, you’ll find boutique shops, gourmet restaurants, and spas, with Vegas-style clubs around every corner. Spend an afternoon on one of Ibiza’s exclusive beaches, before a night on the town.

Menorca offers a respite from the bustle of the other islands. The entire island is a protected UNESCO nature preserve, offering plenty of opportunities to explore the outdoors. Yet, there’s still plenty of history and culture to explore in the island’s charming ports.

Formentera is the smallest of the Balearics, and it’s also one of the most beautiful. Located just a half-hour cruise from Ibiza, Formentera is the perfect getaway for some R&R. Enjoy the island’s splendid beaches, bask in the sun, and enjoy an al fresco lunch in one of Formentera’s quaint plazas.

VAT (Value Added Tax) in Spain

The following VAT laws pertain to private yacht charters in Spanish waters:

  • If a yacht only cruises through Spanish/EU waters, a standard 21% VAT rate will be applied.
  • All yachts must register with the Spanish Government in each region it intends to charter.

Things to See & Do in Spain

Whether you want to savor a glass of sangria while taking in the sunset, or you’d prefer an adventurous hike in the mountains, Spain offers boat rental itineraries full of memorable experiences. A few highlights include:

Explore Historical Sites   All throughout the Balearic Islands you’ll find numerous UNESCO sites and historical landmarks. From the centuries-old battery Dalt Vila in Ibiza, which offers stunning, 360-degree views, to the Roman ruins on Mallorca, the islands offer plenty of chances to explore the region’s storied past.

Enjoy World-Class Cuisine From southern Spain to Valencia, Barcelona, and the Balearic Islands, every corner of the country has developed a thriving culinary scene. Its most popular dishes – like paella, gazpacho, and chorizo – are coupled with seductive aromatics, like fresh olive oils and garlic. The result: Vibrant dishes that awaken the palette. Plus, the Balearic Islands are well-known for their seafood. Try the lobster stew, a local favorite, that’s served on every island.

Sample Fine Wine As you taste your way through the country, pair your meals with fine Spanish wines and sangrias. Sangria – the red wine, fruit concoction – originates in southern Spain, and you’ll find numerous variations on this classic cocktail while on charter. Inland, you’ll find centuries-old vineyards producing unique, native-grape blends and vintages. Can Rich de Buscatello in Ibiza is a must-visit, known for its amazing wines and stunning scenery?

Escape into Nature  From the sparkling, aquamarine waters, to the lush peaks of the Serra de Tramuntana range, the islands put on a dazzling display of natural beauty. Menorca, also known as the “Green Island,” is a protected UNESCO reserve, and boasts some of the region’s best-kept landscapes. Yet, you’ll find secluded coves, sparkling coastal bays, and dramatic mountain ranges wherever you go.

Clubbing in Ibiza Ibiza offers the best nightlife in Spain if not all of Europe. Around Playa d’en Bossa near Ibiza Town, you’ll find world-famous clubs like Ushuaia, which draw the biggest names in international DJing. San Antonio – on the island’s western coast – is another must-visit nightlife spot, where you’ll find the so-called “sunset strip,” a collection of open-air clubs and bars that stay open all night.

Explore Historic Villages The Balearic Islands are home to some of Spain’s most historic villages and seaside towns. Alcudia in the north of Mallorca is one you can’t miss. The restored walled city boasts a gorgeous Medieval city center. Spend an afternoon exploring the city’s narrow, winding streets, and be sure to visit the town’s bustling weekly market.

While on a Yacht Charter in Spain…

  • Spend an afternoon exploring the historic Ibiza Town, before a night of clubbing near Platja d’en Bossa beach
  • Climb to the top of El Toro on Menorca and enjoy 360-degree views of the island
  • Enjoy a glass of sangria at a seaside bar in Mallorca
  • Spend a day at the Palma Aquarium, which is home to more than 8,000 marine animals
  • Relax and unwind on one of the Balearics sparkling beaches like Es Trenc
  • Explore the Dalt Vila UNESCO site on Ibiza, which overlooks the old town
  • Tour the cliff-top Far de la Mola Lighthouse on Formentera and catch a scenic sunset

Spain luxury yacht charter

Spain’s vibrant cities and diverse cruising grounds are rich with culture and well-equipped for welcoming superyachts, with over 300 hundred marinas spread along the country's 8,000 kilometres of stunning coastline. A luxury superyacht charter in Spain offers guests the chance to enjoy the mainland’s yachting hubs like Marbella in Andalusia, with its famous megayacht-lined Puerto Banús, as well as electric cities like Barcelona and the former America's Cup venue of Valencia. From the mainland on the Iberian Peninsula, charter guests can cruise over to the sun-kissed Balearics to sample some of Europe’s finest island and Cala-hopping and world-renowned nightlife.

Spain yacht season and weather

The southern and eastern coasts of Spain have year-round balmy temperatures, with the Costa del Sol and the Balearic islands enjoying sunny days and temperatures in the low 20s even in November.

The Spanish charter season runs from May to October, when blue skies and warm weather prevails. Peak holiday months are July and August when average temperatures are between 25°C and 29°C, although temperatures regularly head into the 30s during the summer. During these peak months, resorts are bustling, nightlife is at its best but anchorages can be busy. Travel early or late in the season to miss the crowds and still enjoy plenty of sunshine.

Spain yacht charter itineraries

From Marbella on the Costa del Sol to Barcelona and the Costa Brava, Spain’s mainland coastline has a host of attractive options and facilities for visiting yachts.

On Spain’s southern coast, Puerto Banús marina has over 900 berths to accommodate yachts up to 50 metres (with the potential to accommodate larger craft if booking ahead) and has the pick of the glam nightlife right off the passerelle. Charterers on Spain’s sun-drenched south coast will find championship golf courses, chic beach clubs, traditional fishing towns and sweeping golden sandy beaches.

With the Costa Brava coastline littered with sandy bays and quaint, charming towns, and the enigmatic cities of Barcelona (teeming with Michelin-starred restaurants and incredible architecture) and Valencia (known for its museums and regatta racing history) lying in wait, plus artsy Sitges and historic sites such as the UNESCO listed Tarragona, it’s easy to spend a week or more exploring the colourful delights of Spain’s east coast.

Barcelona’s OneOcean Port Vell has berths up to 190 metres. Sailing yachts with masts higher than 55 metres must inform the marina as entry under the cable car line across the port will need to be arranged. Valencia Yacht Base offers berths for yachts up to 120 metres.

The Balearic Islands lie around 86 nautical miles west from Valencia and 100 nautical miles south of Barcelona and remain Spain’s most popular cruising destination, with Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza boasting a mix of irresistible calas, nature reserves and scintillating nightlife, with sleepy Formentera offering more spectacular coves.

Spain by superyacht

Getting to spain.

For the Costa del Sol, Malaga airport serves commercial and private jets. On the Costa Brava, Girona airport handles commercial and private jet traffic. Multiple airports in Barcelona and Valencia also serve commercial and private jets.

As foreign-flagged boats may not start or end charters in Spain, typical routes into the country for charters include crossing from the French-Spanish border.

Legal requirements

All boats from outside the EU must report to customs officials on entry into Spain.

Unlike in some EU countries, where VAT tax can be reduced depending on time spent cruising outside of the country, Spain has a flat rate of 21% for VAT. Commerical charter yachts can however receive a break from Spanish matriculation tax.

Generally, but not in every case, local maritime safety regulations dictate that a maximum number of 12 guests are allowed on board a charter yacht.

Palma de Mallorca to Puerto Andratx (17 nautical miles)

From the marina in Palma, it's a relatively brief journey to Puerto Andratx, located on the southwestern tip of Mallorca. The harbor sits at the base of steep and scenic hills, sprinkled with enchanting villas. Revel in the bars and restaurants along the harbor, or explore deeper inland to the quaint little town of Andratx.

Puerto Andratx to Puerto Soller (25 nautical miles)

Puerto Soller sits in the arms of a gorgeous, natural horseshoe bay and is the jewel of the island's west coast. This town is more rustic and artsy than other Mallorca destinations, with delightful cobbled streets and small restaurants and bars. If you're in the mood to explore, an old-fashioned tram climbs the hills from the port to the historic town of Soller, offering amazing panoramic views of island and sea.

Puerto Soller to Puerto Pollensa (35 nautical miles)

Perched on the rugged north coast of the island, Puerto Pollensa is surrounded by dozens of picturesque, sheltered anchorages that are perfect for swimming, diving, snorkeling, and relaxing. This area is one of the most naturally beautiful on the island and filled with opportunities to enjoy fun & sun activities.

Puerto Pollensa to Cala Rajada (25 nautical miles)

Curving around now to the northeastern tip of the island, Cala Rajada is a small, traditional fishing village that is home to gorgeous white sand beaches and amazing turquoise seas that are perfect for snorkeling and swimming. The local lighthouse is an attraction all its own and offers dramatic views in all directions. Play and relax in ultimate style!

Cala Rajada to Cala d’Or (18 nautical miles)

Swinging gradually to the southeast side of the island, Cala d'Or is famous for having the best weather in all of Mallorca. Warm breezes and white sand beaches beckon you to relax, and the numerous five-star resorts, restaurants, and entertainment options provide endless opportunities to sample the delights of the island. You can also explore inland, to hike among wooded hills and dramatic sea cliffs.

Cala d'Or to Cabrera Island (30 nautical miles)

Cabrera Island is a short sail south of Mallorca and is a protected nature reserve. The natural bay is one of the Mediterranean's most beautiful snorkeling destinations, with plentiful turtles, fish, dolphins, marine life, and birds to amaze you. The island also has several historic attractions, including a Napoleonic-era military base and 19th century lighthouse.

Cabrera Island to Palma (35 nautical miles)

Back to luxurious Palma de Mallorca, the crown jewel of the island and one of the world's premier luxury resort destinations. Bars, clubs, fine dining, and more – Palma has something for everyone and is a wonderful way to tie a ribbon on your glorious yacht charter Mallorca holiday!

Palma de Mallorca to Cabo Blanco and Es Trenc

Setting out eastward from the marina at Palma, sail for Cabo Blanco, a gorgeous resort town perched in scenic hills above the sea. A brilliant white sand beach shelves gently into the water and the view is spectacular. Es Trenc is a bit further up the coast. It's a calm natural harbor with an isolated and spacious beach, not attached to any resort developments. With 2km of warm golden sand and crystal clear water, Es Trenc is one of Mallorca's premier relaxation destinations.

Es Trenc to Cabo Salinas and Porto Colom

Cabo Salinas is at the center of a long and lovely stretch of sheltered coves, hidden beaches, and stunning cliffs along Mallorca's eastern coast. The vistas here are both dramatic and soothing, with tropical maritime scenery that feels pulled from a film. Porto Colom is a small fishing village of pastel cottages and cobbled streets. Venture inland to explore caves, hike the gently rolling hills, or visit the Santuari de Sant Salvador, an historic pilgrimage destination.

Porto Colom to Porto Cristo

This area is called the Calas de Mallorca, “the Coast of the Coves.” The crystal clear waters are perfect for swimming and snorkeling, or just sun yourself in the unbelievably pleasant weather of Mallorca's east coast. Porto Cristo's terrace restaurants overlook the bay, with wide views of sand and sea. The famed “Dragon Caves” are a nearby attraction popular with hikers and nature explorers.

Porto Cristo to Cala Formentor

Situated along the northern tip of the island, Cala Formentor is one of the region's most beautiful and stirring locations. Rugged mountains clad in pine and brush march down to the sea, where a long strip of pristine sandy beach beckons you to lounge and play in the sun. Several bars and restaurants offer cozy dining & entertainment options to while away the long summer hours.

Cala Formentor to Sa Calobra

Sailing now down the northwest coast of the island, Sa Calobra is a small bay and a very scenic string of pebbly beaches, with several restaurants and bars along the way. Small tunnels under the hills link the beaches and the area is also fun to explore while hiking or biking. Adjacent sheltered coves offer secluded places to tie up, swim, and enjoy the added relaxation that privacy allows.

Sa Calobra to Sa Dragonera and Peguera

Sa Dragonera National Park is named for the abundant indigenous lizards that call the island home. Stay in the water and you'll see an amazing proliferation of marine life and intriguing underwater scenery. Go ashore and explore several kilometers of trails and pathways, including a route that takes you to an ancient watchtower that crowns the island. The plentiful wall lizards will crawl on your hands and arms with a little coaxing, but don't feed them!

Peguera to Palma

Palma de Mallorca is one of the world's most coveted luxury destinations – it's the perfect place to spend the last night of your epic Mallorca yacht charter holiday. There are dining & entertainment options around every corner, including numerous five-star establishments that cater to the luxury crowd. Treat yourself, you deserve it!

Request confirmation, terms and conditions, charter experts, llc terms & conditions.

PLEASE READ THESE TERMS AND CONDITIONS (“ Terms ”) CAREFULLY AS THEY CONTAIN IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING YOUR LEGAL RIGHTS, REMEDIES AND OBLIGATIONS AS WELL AS A SECTION GOVERNING THE JURISDICTION AND VENUE OF DISPUTES. THESE TERMS ALSO CONTAIN A LEGALLY BINDING RELEASE, WAIVER OF LIABILITY, AND ASSUMPTION OF RISK. By creating a username, a login, clicking submit, using the services of Charter Experts, LLC d/b/a Virgin Island Sailing® (“ Broker ) or by accessing Broker’s website, you agree that you have read, and acknowledge your acceptance of these Terms. The Terms are subject to change at any time without notice at Broker’s sole discretion. Additionally, any transaction for which you have made payment shall be governed by the form of Terms in effect at the time of such payment notwithstanding any subsequent changes hereto.

If you are obtaining a quote, information, booking travel for and/or securing or procuring a Charter (as that term is defined in Section 1 below) for more than just yourself, all references below to “Charterer” or “you” (and derivations thereof) shall be read to mean you on behalf of yourself and each individual within your group for whom you are obtaining a quote, information, booking travel for and/or securing or procuring Charter.

These Terms shall be read together and construed, to the fullest extent possible, to be in concert with any other agreement by or among Broker and Charterer. To the extent they cannot be so construed, then in the event of any direct conflict between these Terms and any other agreement by or among Broker and Charterer (including but not limited to the agreement executed by Charterer for a Charter Reservation (as that term is defined in Section 1 below), these Terms shall prevail.

  • Prepaid Charter Reservations . Typically, Broker negotiates charter rates in advance with the yacht owner or charter company (“ Charter Provider ”) to obtain cost-effective rates, and facilitate reservations and availability for yacht charters, excursions and travel (the “ Charter ”). Broker also provides services to you by facilitating the booking of reservations for consideration and receives a commission from the Charter Provider (the “ Broker Fee ”). The Broker Fee is included in the pre-negotiated Charter rate provided to you, plus taxes and other fees where applicable. You agree that your payment is for the total amount set forth in the applicable Charter agreement (which Charter Provider may refer to as a Charter Contract, Charter Agreement, Booking Terms & Conditions, Instructions and Terms for Accommodations, as well as other derivations) provided to you by Broker (“ Charter Agreement ”). Upon execution of the Charter Agreement and receipt of the applicable deposit, you will have made a reservation for the Charter that authorizes Broker to facilitate the Charter on your behalf (“Charter Reservation”), including making payment arrangements with the Charter Provider. You further agree that Broker is a third-party beneficiary to the Charter Agreement and shall have the right to enforce such agreement to the extent it deems such enforcement necessary or advisable to protect its rights hereunder or under the Charter Agreement.

  Broker retains the Broker Fee as compensation in arranging your Charter Reservation. The Broker Fee varies based on the amount and type of Charter and/or services provided by Broker.  By making a Charter Reservation, you accept and agree to the relevant cancellation and no-show policy of the Charter Provider set forth in the Charter Agreement. Cancellation and no-show policies vary for each Charter. Carefully read the Charter Agreement and additional information provided to you by Broker. It is expressly agreed by Charterer that the Broker Fee is earned at the time the Charter Reservation is made. Late payment, wrong credit card or debit card details, invalid credit or debit cards, or insufficient funds are for your own risk and account, and you will not be entitled to any refund of any prepaid amount unless the Charter Provider expressly agrees otherwise under the Charter Agreement or in some other signed writing.

  • Charter Rules and Restrictions . Additional terms and agreements will apply to your Charter Reservation and any purchase or rental of equipment or other items, supplies, provisions and travel you may select. Please read those additional terms carefully. In particular, if you have purchased airfare, please ensure that you read the full terms and conditions of carriage issued by the supplier. You agree to abide by the terms of purchase imposed by any supplier with whom you elect to deal, including but not limited to payment of all amounts when due and compliance with the supplier’s rules and restrictions regarding availability, charges, fares, and use of products and services.
  • Payment . All payments must be made by personal check, bank/wire transfer, ACH payment and/or with a major credit card unless otherwise expressly stated. The total price for the Charter Reservation will be billed in U.S. Dollars unless otherwise stated. Some banks and credit card companies impose fees for international transactions. If you are making a reservation from outside of the United States on a US credit card, your bank may convert the payment amount to your local currency and charge you a conversion fee. This means the amount listed on your credit or bank card statement may be in your local currency and therefore a different figure than the amount provided by Broker for the Charter Reservation. In addition, a foreign transaction fee may be assessed if the financial institution that issued your credit card is located outside of the United States. Booking international travel may be considered to be an international transaction by the financial institution or card company. The currency exchange rate and foreign transaction fee is determined solely by your financial institution on the day that it processes the transaction. If you have any questions about these fees or the exchange rate applied to your booking, please contact your financial institution. Broker shall not be liable to you for any such service, conversion, or exchange fee.

  Broker expressly reserves the right to cancel your Charter Reservation if full payment is not timely received as set forth in the Charter Agreement.

  • Cancellation and Rescheduling . You may cancel or change your Charter Reservation as set forth in the Charter Agreement by and among you, the Charter Provider and/or Broker. Please note that some Charter Providers do not permit changes to or cancellation of reservations after they are made, or after a certain date, as indicated in the Charter Agreement. You agree to abide by the terms of the Charter Agreement with respect to your Charter Reservation. Broker will not be responsible for reimbursing Charterer for any previously tendered deposits or payments by Charterer and disclaims all liability for the failure of a Charter Provider to refund or return any such funds.
  • Credit Card Transactions and Chargebacks . If for any reason, any Charter Provider is unable to provide the Charter, or any part thereof, for which you have contracted, your remedy lies against the Charter Provider, and not against Broker. However, Broker will use reasonable efforts to assist you and Charter Provider in reaching a resolution to a dispute between you and the Charter Provider. In the event that your payment has already been transferred from Broker to Charter Provider or to an escrow account, you agree that you will not seek a chargeback against Broker for such amounts transferred. You further agree to indemnify and hold Broker harmless from and against any liability, loss, damage or expense (including without limitation, reasonable attorneys’ fees) that Broker may incur in connection with chargebacks against Broker or under the Charter Agreement and your performance thereunder. If Broker incurs any costs, including but not limited to attorneys’ fees, to recover any payments charged back by your credit card company or other financial institution, you agree that you will be liable for these costs. If your payment is declined for any reason, you agree to settle any amounts owed to Broker via money order, cashier’s check, personal check or bank/ACH transfer immediately.
  • Broker Responsibility . Broker makes arrangements with the Charter Provider. Broker additionally makes additional arrangements with other suppliers for the various components and other services that comprise your Charter (“Charter Suppliers”). Broker is not an agent of these Charter Providers or the Charter Suppliers (and the Charter Providers and Charter Suppliers are not agents of Broker). Broker expressly disclaims any liability for the actions or omissions of the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers. The Charter Providers and the Charter Suppliers reserve the right to refuse service to you at their sole discretion. Broker assumes no liability for the acts of the Charter Provider or the Charter Suppliers in refusing service. Broker is not responsible for schedule changes and does not offer compensation for those changes. Broker is not responsible under any circumstances for any injury or damages you may suffer, in connection with sea, air or ground transportation, hotel accommodations, or other travel or excursion services arranged by Broker.

  You understand Broker is not the source or supplier of the Charter or other travel services you requested and acts solely as a broker for the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers. You agree that the Charter Provider and Charter Suppliers whose names appear in the information supplied to you are those who are solely responsible for providing the Charter you purchase. You consent to and request the use of the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers and agree to not hold Broker responsible should any of them: (i) fail to provide the Charter or travel services you purchased, whether or not such services are listed in the Charter Agreement or otherwise, (ii) fail to comply with any applicable law, or (iii) engage in any negligent act or omission that causes you any sort of injury, damage, delay or inconvenience.

By using Broker’s services, you waive and release any claim against Broker, its affiliated and subsidiary companies, and their respective officers, directors, employees, contractors, and agents, arising out of or in connection with any loss of or damage to property or injury to any person caused by reason of (i) any defect, negligence, or other wrongful act or omission, or any failure of performance of any kind, by any Charter Provider, Charter Suppliers, or any other provider of sea, airline, hotel, ground transportation or any other travel provider connected to or otherwise associated with the Charter, (ii) any claim for inconvenience, loss of enjoyment, mental distress or other similar claim, (iii) any delayed departure, missed connection, substitute accommodation, termination of service or change in fares or rates, and (iv) overbooking, flight or other travel cancellation, lost or misconnected personal property, or any claim arising out of the air transportation portion of your travel, and (v) or any other claim arising out of or otherwise related to the Charter Agreement or services provided by the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers.

Excepting only liability that directly arises from the gross negligence or willful misconduct of Broker, you will not hold Broker responsible for any injury, damage or loss you may suffer while on a Charter, whether incurred on the Charter or in connection with any other rental, purchase, excursion or activity, regardless of the relationship of any of the foregoing with the Charter Provider or the Charter Suppliers.

  • Your Responsibility . By booking a Charter with Broker, you agree to defend and indemnify and hold harmless Broker, Charter Provider, Charter Suppliers, and each of their respective officers, directors, employees and agents, from and against any and all claims, causes of action, demands, recoveries, losses, damages, fines, penalties or other costs or expenses of any kind or nature, including but not limited to reasonable legal fees, arising out of or in connection with: (i) your breach of these Terms or the documents referenced herein; (ii) your violation of any law or rights of a third party; or (iii) your use of the Broker website.

You will review your Charter Agreement and travel documents for accuracy upon receipt. You understand that it is your responsibility to review the accuracy of all details in the Charter Reservation provided to you, and that you may contact Broker if you have any questions.

You assume full and complete responsibility for checking and verifying any and all passport, visa, vaccination, or other entry requirements of your destination(s), and all conditions regarding health, safety, security, political stability, and labor or civil unrest at such destination(s).

You understand that Broker recommends purchasing travel insurance to cover certain risks inherent in travel such as supplier bankruptcy and the inability to travel due to a medical or personal emergency.

  • No Warranties . All Charters, products, services, advice and information is provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis without warranties of any kind, either expressed or implied to the fullest extent permitted under the law, including but not limited to, warranties of title or implied warranties of merchantability, satisfactory quality or fitness for a particular purpose. Without limiting the above, no warranty or guarantee is made (i) regarding the acceptance of any reservation request or Charter Reservation; (ii) regarding the availability of Charters, or any other product and/or services through Broker; (iii) that the use of Broker’s website will be error-free; or (iv) regarding the completeness, accuracy, reliability or quality of any information, content, data, service, advice or merchandise provided by Broker or through Broker’s website.

Broker has no special knowledge regarding the Charter Provider’s or Charter Supplier’s financial condition, unsafe conditions, health hazards, weather hazards, or climate extremes at locations to which you may travel during or otherwise in connection with your Charter.

  • Limitation on Liability . In no event shall Broker, Charter Provider, Charter Suppliers, and/or their respective affiliates, or any employees, agents, officers, directors, members or managers of any of the foregoing (“Broker and Charter Releasees”), be liable for any direct, indirect, punitive, incidental, special or consequential damages arising out of, or in any way connected with, your access to, display of or use the Broker’s website, the Charter or services provided to you in connection with the Charter (including, but not limited to, your reliance upon opinions of the Broker), whether based on a theory of negligence, contract, tort, strict liability, consumer protection statutes, or otherwise, and even if Broker and/or any other of the Broker and Charter Releasees have been advised of the possibility of such damages.

If, despite the limitation above, Broker or the Broker and Charter Releasees are found liable for any loss or damage which arises out of or in any way connected with any of the occurrences described above, then Broker, Charter Provider, Charter Supplier and the Broker and Charter Releasees will in no event exceed, in the aggregate, the greater of (a) the Broker Fee, and (b) One-Hundred Dollars (US $100.00).

The foregoing limitation of liability reflects the allocation of risk between the parties. The limitations specified in this section will survive and apply even if any limited remedy specified in these Terms is found to have failed of its essential purpose. The limitations of liability provided in these Terms inure to the benefit of Broker and/or its providers.

The foregoing does not affect any liability which cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law.

  • Limitation on Time to File Claims . ANY CAUSE OF ACTION OR CLAIM YOU MAY HAVE ARISING OUT OF RELATING TO BROKER’S SERVICES OR THE WEBSITE MUST BE COMMENCED WITHIN ONE (1) YEAR AFTER THE CAUSE OF ACTION ACCRUES, OTHERWISE, SUCH CAUSE OF ACTION OR CLAIM IS PERMANENTLY BARRED.
  • Waiver . No waiver by Broker of any term or condition set forth in these Terms shall be deemed a further or continuing waiver of such term or condition or a waiver of any other term or condition, and any failure of the Broker to assert a right or provision under these Terms shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision.
  • Severability . If any provision of these Terms is held by a court or other tribunal of competent jurisdiction to be invalid, illegal or unenforceable for any reason, such provision shall be eliminated or limited to the minimum extent such that the remaining provisions of the Terms will continue in full force and effect.
  • Governing Law and Mandatory Venue . The laws of the State of Florida govern the rights and obligations of the parties to this Agreement and the interpretation, construction and enforceability thereof. You agree that any action or proceeding initiated by Charterer against Broker shall be brought solely in the federal and state courts of Hillsborough County, Florida, and you submit to the jurisdiction of those courts and waive any objections to the exercise of personal jurisdiction over you by those courts. In the event any action or proceeding is initiated by Charterer in a court outside of Hillsborough County, Florida, Charterer agrees to pay Broker’s costs and reasonable attorneys’ fees associated with defending such action or proceeding and waives any and all defenses to the transfer of said action or proceeding, whether jurisdictional or otherwise, to a federal or state court in Hillsborough County, Florida.

Yacht Charter in Spain

Benita Blue by Evolution Yachts - Top rates for a Charter of a private Motor Yacht in Spain

Spain yacht charter

When it comes to spectacular art, architecture, fantastic cuisine, calm cruising grounds, sunny weather, and one of the world's best nightlife scenes, nothing beats a holiday in Spain. With the Atlantic and the Mediterranean Seas on its coastline, it is a yacht charter paradise. In the summer, from April to October, you will witness some of the world's best luxury yachts floating off the waters of Ibiza, Mallorca, Barcelona, and on the sailing haven of the Canary Islands.

How much to charter a yacht in Spain?

With thousands of coastlines and more than 300 sunny days every year, a yacht charter is the ideal way to truly capture Spain's gist and beauty. You can choose from many different types of sizes of boats, from speedboats to catamarans with two cabins, to superyachts with complete luxury amenities. A 156-foot sailboat in Spain can cost around $6,700 for a week's rent, while a 42-foot catamaran with six cabins can cost about $8,500. For a 134-foot luxury yacht, with five cabins, and complete water sports equipment, it can cost around $100,000 for 7 days.

What are the most popular yacht holidays in Spain?

The coastal cities and islands on the Mediterranean side of Spain offer the most popular yacht charter holidays. With turquoise waters, peaceful cruising grounds, sheltered bays, and plenty of charming and exciting islands to explore, Spain is a luxury yacht charter paradise. The Balearic Islands make up Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca, and Formentera. Mallorca is famous for its vibrant nightlife, stunning historical architecture, and secluded coves. The island also features quaint fishing villages and charming stone-built villages such as the popular Pollenca.

Ibiza, famous for being a party island destination, is known worldwide for its legendary nightlife. It is home to the world's largest nightclub, the Privilege Ibiza. But aside from its image as Spain's party capital, the island also boasts deserted beaches, calm anchorages, and crystal blue waters perfect for water sports activities. Formentera and Menorca's islands offer a more peaceful atmosphere, fantastic beach clubs, excellent restaurants, and gorgeous sandy beaches. If you want to step away from the buzzing nightlife and crowds of Ibiza, you can take your boat to these islands for some laid back vibe.

The Mediterranean coastal cities of Spain are perfect destinations for cosmopolitan life. You will discover spectacular architecture in Barcelona, particularly of Gaudi's works, who designed the famous Sagrada Familia Catholic Church. The city is the top spot for trendy shops, gourmet restaurants, and art museums. The city of Valencia, also on the coast, is renowned for its famous sailing grounds. Considered to have one of the best waters for yachts in the whole of Europe, it is host to the America's Cup, the world's most important sailing race.

In Costa Del Sol, you will find Sotogrande, also offering excellent sailing conditions, designer shops, and of course, an epic nightlife. And if you want a more rugged and raw natural beauty for a yacht holiday destination, the Canary Islands on the Atlantic Ocean is a hidden gem. It is located approximately 70 miles off the coast of Morocco and features seven main islands, all within a day's cruise. The island group is Spanish territory, and there are excellent marinas, thousands of beaches, and incredible natural scenery.

Where to go on a luxury yacht charter in Spain?

Spain is a luxury yacht charter destination, and you can find plenty of luxury tours on the Mediterranean coast. You can find Port Vell in Barcelona, one of Europe's most famous luxury marinas. You can find the Port Vell Wellness within the marina, which features a spa, a gym with personal trainers, and a Pilates studio. After seven days cruising the Mediterranean, get to drop anchor in this marina and pamper yourself with the 5-star spa only a few steps away from your boat. And with the city only a stroll away, get to explore the Gothic quarter nearby, and indulge yourself in world-class cuisine from any of the ten Michelin-starred restaurants located all over Barcelona.

Known as among the most expensive marinas in the world is the Ibiza Magna. With a prime location, this exclusive marina can host boats up to 60 meters in length. Found on the foot of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Dalt Vila, right in the center of the city, its luxury amenities and proximity to the best happenings and best spots on the island make it a true luxury destination. And of course, Costa Del Sol's Puerto Banus is not to be missed. Dubbed as the most expensive marina in Europe, it is one of the world's best known nautical destinations. Located on the suburb of Marbella in Nueva Andalucia, luxury yacht charters will find excellent facilities, shops, and plenty of exciting adventures waiting for you to discover onshore.

Spain is a vibrant, exciting, and spectacular yacht charter destination. With the Mediterranean Sea offering crystal blue waters and excellent sailing conditions for most of the year, a luxury yacht charter hopping from one island and coastal city to another is the best way to immerse yourself in the cosmopolitan and natural beauty of Spain.

Spain Yacht Charter

Luxury superyacht charters in Spain can be organised at surprisingly reasonable prices. Spain yacht charters on private boats are easily the best way to explore the beautiful Mediterranean coastlines of Spain because your crew know all the best spots. Spain has grown as a crewed yacht charter vacation location in recent years and is now one of the most popular areas in the Mediterranean. Here's why:

Everything about Spain represents the passion and power of an awesome culture. The swirling Flamenco skirts, the flash of the Matador's cloak, the sangria, the tapas, and the rich and flaming personalities of the Spanish. Everything about Spain is red; except the startling blue backdrop of the Mediterranean , where the yachts moor with their shiny hulls, and the silvery green leaves of the olive groves. Balearic Islands , located in the western Mediterranean Sea , are the most sought-after charter destination in Spain with charter itineraries starting and ending in either Mallorca or Ibiza .

On a charter holiday in the Balearics you will come across continuous sunshine, pristine clear waters, beautiful beaches and rugged landscape with plenty of historical sites to visit; including castles, museums and ancient cobbled streets in quaint little towns. You will also see a range of beautiful luxury superyachts moored off shore in the warm Mediterranean waters. The four largest islands to explore are Mallorca (or Majorca), Minorca (Menorca), Ibiza and Formentera (Espalmador).

There are no half-measures on a Spain yacht charter and visitors on a luxury yacht vacation will be bombarded with visual delights, flavoursome cuisine and animated celebrations. Ramble through the evocative old lane of the Gothic Quarter in Barcelona and marvel at Casa Battlo, the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia and Park Guell, all showcasing Gaudi's playful and flowing style that strongly influenced the Art Noveau movement. Picasso grew up in this atmospheric city and the galleries here have the best collection of his earlier work.

The Balearic Islands have some of the very best beaches, some of which can only be accessed by luxury yacht. Party the night away in Ibiza then sail to a secluded anchorage where you can sunbathe in privacy and recover in your sundeck Jacuzzi surrounded by the ambient sounds of nature. The charming seaside towns on Menorca and Mallorca provide a laid-back setting for rest and exploration, while the surrounding seas are clear and offer a wealth of opportunities to break out your water toys.

TOP DESTINATIONS TO VISIT IN SPAIN

Majorca yacht charters are fabulous thanks to its beaches and coves, and is an excellent destination to enjoy everything from countryside golf to historic culture, water sports and lively entertainment. The capital city, Palma has numerous outdoor cafés, pubs and large seafront discos hosting some of the best DJs on the music scene. In Palma de Mallorca you could also visit the elegant Cathedral of Palma (Sa Seu), commissioned by King Jaume I and built on the site of a preexisting Arab mosque.

Have everything you could want on a Spanish luxury yacht charter and visit Mallorca in the Balearic Islands for the lush contrasts between the sandy beaches and verdant mountains, the medieval architecture and the nightlife. Adults and children alike will enjoy an afternoon exploring the myriad of caves along the coastline and the shallow clear water is the perfect place for younger children to play on inflatable and towable toys or learn new skills. Party the night away in Magaluf at the prestigious clubs and bars, where you will be serenaded by live music as you sip on exotic cocktails and meet other holidaymakers. If you wish to escape the bustling towns for a day or two of tranquility, Pollença on the north side of the island is ideally positioned close to the beaches with easy access to grassy hill tracks. The town is filled with high quality art galleries where you can pick up the perfect souvenir of your holiday. More on Mallorca yacht charter ...

Menorca features more beaches than Ibiza, Mallorca and Formentera combined and there are various attractions, including fabulous archeological sites and cultural attractions throughout the island. For yacht charterers Menorca is a perfect place to enjoy great diving, thanks to the crystal clear waters and fantastic diving sites. Minorca is also a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and has marked trails and routes in southern Europe ‘s most important wetland areas. The S’Albufera d’Es Grau Nature Reserve is where many aquatic and migratory birds thrive, or visit one of the monumental sites such as the historic old town of Ciudadela.

Referred to as the ‘White Island’ thanks to its typical architecture, Ibiza is one of the best known islands in the world. If what your desire is a lively nightlife and great entertainment on your luxury yacht charter, than Ibiza is the right place to sail to. The entertainment isn’t just reserved to the night clubs; after the sunset, Ibiza plays host to street markets, terrace bars, open-air cultural events and concerts.

In addition to lively atmosphere, the island is also a UNESCO World Heritage destination for its cultural wealth, boasting wonderful archaeological history and museums. By day you could choose to explore the ancient heritage of the island or simply relax and enjoy one of the many tiny coves, broad white sand beaches and water activities.  There are also two beautiful National Parks to visit in Ibiza: the Ses Salinas National Park and the Es Vedrà – an uninhabited nature reserve island. More about Ibiza yacht charter ...

FORMENTERA OR ESPALMADOR

Your Spanish charter itinerary would not be perfect without a visit to Fromentera; a mecca for nature-lovers with rich vegetation of pines and palms. Formentera is a lovely little island situated 11 miles from the South Eastern coast of Ibiza and can only be reached by boat. Adding to the exclusive atmosphere, there are numerous great beaches and tranquil bays to relax and unwind.

Water sports enthusiasts can play to their heart's content at the kilometre-long beaches of Formentera, which has preserved its natural beauty. Artists and photographers have plentiful subjects to choose from, including weathered lighthouses, windmills, watch towers and churches. Isla Espalmador is one of the region's most famous sites and your group can indulge in a therapeutic mud bath after a tiring day of kayaking, water skiing or even scuba diving in the sea.

WINNICO YACHTS in Spain

The northern Catalonian City of Barcelona , Spain’s second largest, is also the launching base for some of Spain’s superyacht charters, for those visitors who wish to add Barcelona to their charter itinerary. The city is a melting pot of gothic and medieval architecture and the culture and nightlife in Barcelona, is as good as anywhere. There are two main marinas in Barcelona, including the newly developed Marina Port Vell. From here it is just a short stroll down to the Las Ramblas, Barcelona's famous main street. It is lined with restaurants, cafe and shops. Some of the 'must-see' sights include the breathtaking 'Sagrada Familia' surrounded by the Gothic Quarter - Barri Gòtic, Park Guell or the Picasso Museum. Barcelona, a Spanish City known for its unique diversity, is a microcosm of rich culture and history and considered as a teeming social milieu in tourist circles.

Mahón is a popular Balearic Islands destination among the yachting crowd for its easy-going character and fine eateries. The settlement has a personality all of its own; Georgian houses show an influence from tourists of a bygone era and guests can taste the locally made gin, tour the ancient ruins or listen to the organ in the serene church Iglesia de Santa Maria.Anchor in one of the many bays to watch the sunset as you dine alfresco aboard your superyacht, then spend your evening hosting your own private sundeck party while the town lights flicker on the water.

The naturally beautiful region of Ciutadella on Menorca will leave your luxury yacht charter party spoiled for choice for beaches and play grounds to break out the water toys. Fishing, snorkelling and diving in this region is also excellent and there is a variety of sea corals and marine life to make colourful photographs to share back home. Wildflowers and ruins throng the hillsides and outside of the peak tourist times, you can have the beach all to yourselves to enjoy a candlelit dinner beside the water. If you crave city life Ciutadella has excellent shops and plenty of cultural hot spots to discover, such as the Talaia Cultura and the Cathedral Ciudadela.

The Spain yacht charter scene has become increasingly popular and the types of yacht charter available in the Balearics, Barcelona, Palma, Valencia and The Costa Brava are all the main types of yacht charter including motor, sailing, bareboat charter, skippered, crewed yachts, catamaran, power boat, sailboat, luxury yachts and the ever more familiar super yacht charter.

Like most of the Mediterranean , the Spain yacht chartering season generally runs from April to the end of October. The summer season in July and August is the hottest and tends to have lighter winds. This is also the high season as far as yacht charter goes. Other good times to rent a yacht is generally on either of the shoulder seasons (April-May and September-October), each side of the main summer season, as the temperatures are still comfortable, and the onshore tourists have yet to arrive in their largest numbers. This is the time that you will see the bulk of the Mediterranean crewed luxury superyachts visiting Spain.

Trina: The Charter was excellent – the Best captain we have ever had and an excellent crew. The boat itself was very well suited to our needs, it was particularly good that all cabins were of a similar size, as you know often the 3rd and 4th cabins can be a little small the design of the boat meant they were all a good size. Guide to Barcelona

A city that inspires artists, chef’s and discerning travellers the world over

Famed for its enchanting architecture, fabulous dining and bountiful culture, the seaside city of Barcelona is a superyacht stop-off you’ll never forget.

Barcelona’s location alone is idyllic, situated on the north-eastern coast of the Iberian Peninsula overlooking the blue of the Mediterranean Sea. It is watched over by the Serra de Collserola mountain range between the rivers Besòs and Llobregat with the towering 512 m (1,680 ft) high Tibidabo mountain providing an amazing backdrop as well as fantastic views over the city. If you need to escape the hustle and bustle of the city for a few hours then the peaks are engulfed by the beautiful Collserola Natural Park which is the biggest metropolitan park in the world.

As the capital of Catalonia and with colourful architectural treasures spanning more than 2,000 years, Barcelona is a city that needs no introduction but one where you can enjoy unlimited experiences. Magnificent temple columns allude to its ancient history while the winding lanes of its Gothic Quarter express its charismatic edge. Keep exploring and at every turn you’ll be greeted with the spectacular creations of the renowned Gaudi and his contemporaries, to make this a truly memorable yacht charter destination.

The beauty of Barcelona has long been an inspiration to artists the world over and it now hosts two museums dedicated to the works of Picasso and Joan Miró, both of whom fell in love with the city. Its masterpieces are not just confined to art and architecture however – the city’s gastronomic delights are just as celebrated and its restaurant scene is now one of the most talked about in the Mediterranean . From Galician seafood taverns, avant-garde Japanese restaurants, a full spectrum of fun and fine dining options will keep your time ashore packed full of flavour.

Where do you go if you want to experience  Spain like a local? We tapped our experts in Spain to show us the places where they love to go on vacation there, ranging from slow-traveling around the vineyards and villages of Catalonia with their traditional artisan cultures, to escaping the heat in  Asturias  and discovering the more laid-back side of  Ibiza  with its pristine beaches and quiet coves.

Kitesurfing on the beach of Tarifa

1. Tarifa, Andalucía

Isabella Noble grew up in Málaga and now splits her time between Andalucía and Barcelona

Why Tarifa?

My family stumbled across laid-back, surf-loving Tarifa in the 1990s, and I still escape here every year, whether for a few beachy days in early September (bliss) or working remotely during low season. On the southernmost tip of mainland Europe, in Cádiz province , Tarifa is one of Andalucía ’s most magical coastal towns, with miles of wild golden-white beaches, a relaxed vibe and views of neighboring Morocco across the Strait of Gibraltar.

Must-do activity

Cádiz’s Atlantic-washed Costa de la Luz has been popular with Spaniards for years, and Tarifa has a special edge thanks to its lively kitesurfing and windsurfing scene. The entire undeveloped coast stretching northwest from Tarifa is a protected parque natural, and even when things get busy in summer, there are plenty of hidden corners. I love the coastal walk past natural sea pools from tiny Bolonia’s Roman ruins to Punta Paloma dune . Or the hike to secluded El Cañuelo beach – a pine-fringed, back-to-nature paradise where there’s often no one else around.

Tarifa tips

I usually stay at one of the small, independent boutique hotels in Tarifa’s meandering old town; The Riad is a stylishly converted 17th-century home with creative Moroccan-Andalucian design, while Hostal África has boho-cool rooms and rooftop yoga. You’re spoiled for choice with Tarifa’s lively international-influenced food scene; I often grab a fruit-and-yogurt breakfast bowl at Morocco-inspired Café Azul , and later stop for tapas (just-cooked tortilla, payoyo goat’s cheese) on the terrace at El Lola , which also serves local sherries and Cádiz wines.

Vineyards in the hills of Priorat, Catalonia, Spain

2. Priorat, Catalonia

Joan Torres is a writer from Barcelona who loves getting off the beaten track

Why Priorat?

In the heart of rural Catalonia , Priorat is an off-the-beaten-track region where visitors can learn about traditional wine making. Many consider the wines produced in Priorat to be the most sophisticated in all of Spain (with prices to match).

Must-do activity

Dotted with several medieval villages, Priorat is best visited on your own wheels, road-tripping from village to village, and cellar to cellar. Álvaro Palacios and Mas Doix are some of the most popular – yet you shouldn’t miss lesser-known, smaller-batch wineries such as Hericamps, which produces no more than 5000 bottles a year. Porrera, Gratallops, Siurana and Falset are all beautiful villages packed with cellars, where you can also find accommodations fitting for every wallet, ranging from budget hostels to luxury boutique hotels within the wineries.

Priorat tips

When it comes to food, La Cooperativa de Porrera is one of the best restaurants in the region for authentic Catalan food, while Brichs , located in Falset, is the place to satisfy more demanding gourmets looking for a more modern version of the local cuisine.

Swimmers in the water at Cala d’Hort beach with Es Vedrà island in the distance, Ibiza, Spain

3. Sant Josep de sa Talaia, Ibiza

Natalia Diaz lives in Madrid  and loves writing about food, travel and culture

Why Sant Josep de sa Talaia?

Ibiza is well known as the unrivaled party capital of Europe – yet this is just a tiny sliver of the story of this Mediterranean paradise. Beyond the strobe lights and glamorous nightclubs, the Balearic island has a serene side that’s perfect for those who prefer a more laid-back and nature-oriented experience.

Drive around to explore Ibiza’s breathtaking natural beauty, from its numerous calas (coves) and majestic cliffs, to its white sand coastlines embraced by clear sapphire waters. Sa Caleta (Es Bol Nou) beach hosts the ancient ruins of the first Phoenician settlement in Ibiza, a Unesco World Heritage Site atop a cliff with panoramic views of the Balearic Sea.

Sant Josep de sa Talaia tips

When I go to Ibiza, I prefer staying at a short-term rental in Sant Josep de sa Talaia, on the western side of the island. (If you’re a big group, you can even rent out an entire villa). Sant Josep offers a perfect mix of rugged natural beauty, chill-out bars and quiet coves, including Cala Comte, Cala d’Hort and Port des Torrent. Es Boldado on Cala d’Hort is hands down my favorite restaurant on the entire island – I can stay here all day dining on fresh seafood and traditional ibicenco cuisine and sipping premium Spanish wines, while enjoying its main feature: a spectacular view of mythical Es Vedrà island, believed to be the tip of Atlantis and legendary home to sirens, sea nymphs and even UFOs.

A hiker on a trail with residual snow in Parque Natural de Somiedo, Asturias, Spain

4. Somiedo, Asturias

Paula Sánchez Iglesias and Daniel Del Río Espina are from Avilés and run the Spanish travel blog, Hacemoslasmaletas

Why Somiedo?

In the lush valleys, lakes and mountains of Asturias in northern Spain lies Parque Natural de Somiedo , a Unesco Biosphere Reserve offering a refreshing escape from the summer heat. Situated in the Cantabrian Mountains, Somiedo is a hiker’s paradise that offers breathtaking views of glacial lakes, limestone peaks and beech forests. You’ll also see brañas , traditional cattle-herding settlements with clusters of tietos (thatched cottages). Two of the best hiking routes in the area are El Valle del Lago and Los Lagos de Saliencia.

This rural paradise is also the habitat of the largest group of brown bears in Western Europe, with around 280 individuals freely roaming the western half of the range. Bear watching is a popular activity here – though we recommend doing this with a local guide so you can learn about conservation efforts. Wolves, wildcats, chamois and red deer can also be found here, along with the possibility of spotting griffon vultures, golden eagles or capercaillies (colorful fowl).

Somiedo tips

Stay in the village of Pola de Somiedo, where you’ll find a range of hotels, homestays and B&Bs. Come meal time, you should book a table at the family-run El D’Iban in the nearby village of Braña de la Peral. Another great dining option, particularly during the colder months, is Sidreria Carion , where you can savor the region’s famous cider, along with hearty dishes like Asturian fabada (a bean stew) or cachopo , a filling dish featuring two large veal or beef escalopes filled with ham and cheese, coated in breadcrumbs and served with locally sourced ingredients. Delicious.

UK tourists warned to take key document on Spain holidays to stop being turned away

UK tourists warned to take key document on Spain holidays to stop being turned away

One document takes weeks to get your hands on.

Tom Earnshaw

Tom Earnshaw

UK tourists heading to Spain on holiday this summer are being warned over vital travel documents you might need to take with you to stop being sent right back home.

If previous years are anything to go by, more Brits will be flying to Spain than any other country in the world for some fun in the sun.

Millions will take to the skies for beach holidays to the likes of Benidorm and Majorca .

And on the flip side, you've got city trips in the likes of Barcelona and Madrid if you fancy something a little less beach-based.

But because of Brexit, you might need to take extra documentation with you if you're flying out any time soon.

As a result of the UK leaving the European Union , Brits are now classed as 'third-country nationals' and must clear far larger hurdles for any trip to the EU and wider Schengen Area

The Schengen Area - Austria, Belgium, Czechia, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France , Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Norway, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland - are 27 EU countries that are all signed up to freedom of movement for all their citizens.

The UK was in this, now it isn't. And as a result, your passport has to be assessed and stamped every time you arrive in a country that is in the Schengen Area, leading to longer queues when getting off planes.

Brexit also means UK passport holders are subject to something called the Schengen 90/180-Day Rule, which can see you banned from most of Europe if you stay for too long .

And for those specifically heading to Spain, you must make sure you have one specific document with you.

Called a Carta de Invitación (Letter of Invitation in English) it is vital to have this if you are staying with friends or family, rather than paying for accommodation.

Not having it could see you turned around at passport control and sent back to the UK.

The UK Foreign Office's official travel advice for Spain states that at Spanish border control, you may need to show:

  • A return or onward ticket;
  • Proof of your travel insurance;
  • You have enough money for your stay – the amount varies depending on your accommodation;
  • A hotel booking confirmation or proof of address if you’re staying at your own property; and
  • An invitation or proof of address if staying with a third party, friends or family, such as a ‘carta de invitación’ completed by your hosts.

The Carta de Invitación costs about £70 and asks for quite a bit of information, including proof that your friend or family member owns or rents the place you're staying at.

Needing your passport stamped has become a thing for Brits visiting the EU as a result of Brexit (Getty Stock Images)

On top of this, you could be 'summoned to hold a personal interview in order to verify his or her identity'.

And the letter can take up to two months to get of, so please plan in advance.

Legal experts from Balcells say : "The invitation letter is only necessary for non-EU people who want to come to visit the country. That is, people without a passport from the European Union. Thus, not everyone needs this letter for a visa to enter Spain.

"And this is because all EU citizens enjoy free transit within Spanish territory; so you don’t need it in those situations. So, to sum up, it is possible that with your short-term visa an invitation letter is required; especially if you are staying at a friend or family member’s house.

"In general, it takes from 10 days to two months to get the invitation letter for a foreigner who wants to visit Spain. Although this period may vary greatly, our recommendation is to start the process at least one or two months in advance.

The invitation letter is not a document given to you at the moment.

"If you are thinking of requesting it because you need it as soon as possible (in one or two days), they will not give it to you that fast."

Good morning!

Welcome back to the Politics Hub on this Saturday, 22 June.

There are 12 days to go until polls open in the general election across the country, and we expect all parties to be out and about trying to convince voters to back them.

Here's what's happening today:

  • Reform UK leader Nigel Farage is under fire after reiterating in an interview that he blames the West and NATO for the Russian invasion of Ukraine;
  • He also confirmed that he previously said he "admired" Vladimir Putin as a statesman - and has been roundly condemned by senior politicians in both main parties;
  • Mr Farage's party is also facing questions as analysis for Sky News reveals its flagship tax policy disproportionately benefits those on higher incomes;
  • The party is proposing raising income tax thresholds, which would see the top 10% of earners receive a tax cuts of almost £6,000, while the poorest 10% would gain just an extra £221 per year;
  • After his "swift pitstop" at the opening night of Taylor Swift's Era's Tour show at Wembley last night, Sir Keir Starmer is expected to be out and about promoting his pledge to deliver a "fundamental reset" for the Windrush generation and deliver proper compensation;
  • His shadow environment secretary will also be discussing sewage, and Labour's plan to clean up Britain's waterways;
  • But the Labour leader is under fire from none other than JK Rowling , who has said she will "struggle to support" Labour if Sir Keir Starmer keeps his current stance on gender recognition;
  • Rishi Sunak is also expected to be out on the campaign trail today as his party desperately tries to make a dent in Labour's poll lead with less than two weeks to go until polling day;
  • The Tory party are pledging to revitalise the nighttime economy, and have hit out at Labour for their "failure" to support it in London and in Wales;
  • Sir Ed Davey of the Lib Dems is also talking sewage today, reiterating his party's pledge to give rivers a new protected status to prevent sewage dumping;
  • The leaders of the SNP , Green Party , and Plaid Cymru are all expected to be out on the campaign trail as election day approaches.

We'll be discussing all of that and more with:

  • David Simmonds , Conservative candidate, at 7.15am ;
  • Steve Reed , shadow environment secretary, at 8.15am .

Follow along for the very latest from the campaign trail.

We'll be back from 6am with all the latest from the general election campaign, with a little under two weeks to go until polling day.

You can scroll back through the page to catch up on what you've missed, or check out our 10pm round-up for a brief look at the day.

Join us on Saturday for another day of live updates.

Slashing red tape for Britain's pubs, restaurants and music venues would be the focus of a review launched within the first 100 days of a Tory government, the party has said.

Ministers would look into ways to "crack down" on councils imposing "disproportionate conditions" and restrictions on licences as part of a bid to boost the UK night-time economy, the Conservatives say.

It comes as Rishi Sunak seeks to shift the focus of the campaign away from the betting scandal that has thrown his party into fresh turmoil in recent days.

The Tories used the announcement to attack Labour's record on nightlife in London and Wales, as polls continue to put the opposition party on course for a historic victory on 4 July.

Business minister Kevin Hollinrake said: "The night-time economy is a vibrant sector that's vital to our economy and our society as a whole.

"We've always supported our night-time economy, with business rates reliefs, economic support during the pandemic - but wherever Labour have been responsible for the sector, it's suffered.

"We'll continue to back our night-time economy - Labour would cripple it further with higher taxes and more burdensome regulation."

It's 10pm - time for your evening election update.

The general election takes place in under two weeks, and political parties from across the House of Commons are busy on the campaign trail.

Here's what you might have missed today:

  • Rishi Sunak has reiterated he was "incredibly angry" when he learned about allegations that his own parliamentary aid Craig Williams, who is a Tory candidate, had placed a bet on the election;
  • Laura Saunders, the candidate for Bristol North West, and her husband, director of campaigns Tony Lee, are also being investigated by the Gambling Commission;
  • David TC Davies , the Welsh secretary, told Sky News this morning that he "certainly" did not bet on the date of the general election;
  • And the Conservatives got less than £300,000 in party donations between 7 and 12 June - far behind the £4.3m handed to Labour;
  • But a Tory candidate told Sky News tonight that the Conservatives have a "sizable war chest" to run a "decent campaign" this year;
  • Mr Sunak's favourability is now at an all time low, with three quarters of Britons having an unfavourable view of him - less even than Mr Johnson's lowest polling;
  • The Welsh Conservatives have launched their manifesto today.
  • Over with Labour , who - as we just mentioned - have come top of the list for party donations for the second week of the general election campaign.
  • And Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer today said he would not enter negotiations with the Scottish government on an independence referendum if the SNP wins a majority of Scottish seats at the 4 July election;
  • Sir Keir has also admitted today that the choice the public faced in the 2019 general election - Boris Johnson or Jeremy Corbyn - "wasn't a good one";
  • But he opted to have a night off - at Taylor Swift's Eras Tour in London;
  •  And Welsh Labour has launched its manifesto today,  with shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves detailing the "simple choice" voters have to face on 4 July.
  • Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey today criticised Rishi Sunak's response to his party's betting scandal as "not good enough";
  • And Plaid Cymru has claimed Welsh Labour's manifesto lacks ambition and undermines devolution. The party said that Labour is imposing further austerity on Wales with £1.8bn worth of cuts to public services.

While you're here, check out more of our election coverage below:

By Rob Powell , political correspondent

The architect of the government's delayed reforms to social care has told Sky News politicians need to "grow up" and tackle the crisis in the sector.

Amid a bitter election row over public spending, Sir Andrew Dilnot said he believed the two main parties were reluctant to discuss care reform for fear of being accused of plotting future tax hikes.

Sir Andrew - whose 2011 report laid out several key measures adopted by the government - described social care as the "biggest risk that isn't managed" that the country faces.

He said: "Four out of five people are going to need  social care  before they die, we should grow up and face it."

"I think politicians are reluctant to talk about it firstly because they're worried about anything that means an increase in public spending and therefore possible taxation," he added.

You can read more below:

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has taken a break from general election campaigning tonight - to shake it off at Taylor Swift's Eras Tour.

Sir Keir and his wife Victoria joined thousands of Swifties at the first of three Eras Tour shows at Wembley Stadium - which will be followed up by five more in August.

Government borrowing was less than expected in May, new figures have revealed.

Net borrowing - the difference between public sector spending and income - was £15bn, an increase of £0.8bn on the same time last year, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported on Friday.

The amount is below the £15.7bn forecast by the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) and less than expected by economists.

However, it was still the highest amount for the month of May since the  COVID-19 pandemic .

The ONS also said that public sector net debt, excluding public sector banks, was provisionally estimated at 99.8% of gross domestic product (GDP) in May - the highest level since March 1961.

The figure is also 3.7 percentage points higher than during the same period last year.

Economists said it showed that whoever wins the  upcoming general election  will face a string of potential financial challenges.

Nigel Farage has stood by his comment describing Andrew Tate as an "important voice" for men as he greeted supporters in Clacton-on-Sea.

The Reform UK leader had praised Tate while speaking on the Strike It Big podcast in February for defending "male culture" and said the "jury is out" on investigations into the influencer, The Guardian reported.

Since December 2022, Tate has faced charges in Romania of human trafficking, rape, and forming a criminal gang to sexually exploit women, which he denies.

Asked whether Tate was an "important voice" for men as he was leaving a meeting with supporters, Mr Farage said: "He's got a massive following and that shows you how big the gap is.

"I mean, clearly he's facing some serious allegations and has said some things that are difficult to level with, but the fact that he's got the following shows you how big the gap is."

Mr Farage did not specify what "gap" he was referring to.

Our live poll tracker collates the results of opinion surveys carried out by all the main polling organisations - and allows you to see how the political parties are performing in the run-up to the general election.

It currently shows a drop in support in recent days for Labour and the Tories - with a jump for Reform and the Liberal Democrats.
