Mystery buyer purchases $278 million superyacht once owned by Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen. It includes 13 guest suites, 2 submarines, and a pool that turns into a dancefloor.

  • A superyacht built for Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen has been sold to a secret buyer, reports say.
  • The boat, named Octopus, had been listed for about $278 million, Bloomberg News reported.
  • The 414-foot vessel's new owner plans to open the Octopus to charters, SuperYacht Times reported.

Insider Today

A 414-foot luxury yacht once owned by Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen and listed for $278 million was sold to a mystery buyer, reports said.

The vessel, named Octopus, was purchased for an undisclosed price, Bloomberg News reported. The mystery buyer was Scandinavian, The Guardian reported.

SuperYacht Times first reported the sale, saying: "Her new owner intends to charter her for the first time since her launch, offering guests the opportunity to join her on a two-year round the world tour, beginning in January 2022, following a yard period this winter."

Allen, who died in October 2018, paid about $200 million for the Lürssen yacht. The boat was delivered in 2003. It had been listed at about $325 million in 2019.

Octopus has 13 staterooms, an observation lounge, a movie theater, and a recording studio, according to Fraser Yachts , which listed it for sale. Along with a diving dock and beach club, it has a spa, pool, and gym.

The yacht became well known for both its amenities — it has two submarines — and for the parties thrown aboard. At the Cannes film festival, Allen hosted yacht parties attended by rock legends and movies stars, reportedly including Mick Jagger and Chloe Sevigny.

Related stories

In 2015, the yacht's Cannes party guests included Leonardo DiCaprio, Karlie Kloss, and Natalie Portman, The New York Post reported at the time. (Allen also partied at Cannes with his smaller 303-foot yacht, Tatoosh .)

Yacht ownership was about more than pleasure-boating for Allen, however. He also used Octopus as a research vessel, often hunting wreckage of ships sunk during World War II.

Allen and a team of researchers in 2015 led an operation in the North Atlantic to recover the HMS Hood, a battle-cruiser sunk in 1941. It was one of several such expeditions Allen led.

Bloomberg reported that 219 superyachts were sold in Q1, more than doubling from a year earlier.

The Tatoosh superyacht

If you’re a fan of both the high seas and the tech world, you could charter late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen’s megayacht Octopus for $2.2 million a week. Or you could just buy his other superyacht for a cool $90.4 million.

Built by the German shipyard Nobiskrug, the yacht comes equipped with 11 staterooms that can hold 19 guests, with room enough for 31 crew members. Along with five decks, two helipads and a jetted, heated pool, you’ll also find a host of more lavish amenities. (Yes, it can get even more lavish than that.) The pool can transform into a dance floor; you can watch movies in the on-board cinema; and there’s a beach club, a dive center and a beauty salon. Honestly, you’ll have little reason to ever disembark.

Allen, who was the world’s 27th-richest man at the time of his death in 2018, named the yacht after a wilderness area near his hometown of Seattle. The ship was just one of the assets contributing to his $26 billion fortune. His estate is now working to offload some of those assets, and it’s so far sold more than $350 million worth of property, according to Bloomberg. To add to that, in November, Christie’s New York will sell Allen’s 150-plus piece art collection, estimated to be worth about $1 billion.

As for the show-stopping yacht, Tatoosh , which has a range of 6,855 nautical miles and can hit 16 knots at maximum speed, is being co-listed by Fraser Yachts and Burgess. If you’ve got an extra $90 mil lying around, now’s your chance to sail the high seas in jaw-dropping luxury.

The Octopus, a 414-foot superyacht formerly owned by Microsoft's cofounder, can be chartered for $2.2 million — take a look at the vessel

A 414-foot luxury yacht, one of the world's most expensive, can be chartered starting at $2.2 million a week.

The yacht is already seeing bookings and interest for this winter and next summer, Bloomberg reported.

See inside the luxury ship, which can accommodate 12 guests and 42 crew members.

One of the world's largest and most expensive megayachts with a famed past can now be yours to charter for a week to Antarctica …

Source:  Bloomberg

… as long as you have millions of dollars to spend and a lust for ultra luxury travel.

The Octopus, a 414-foot luxury megayacht, can be chartered for trips around Europe, the Americas, and Antarctica starting at $2.2 million a week with yacht firm Camper and Nicholsons.

This multimillion-dollar price tag is definitely heft. But the ship is one of the largest and most expensive explorer yachts ever built, and was previously owned by Paul Allen, the cofounder of Microsoft, Holly Overton reported for Boat International.

Source: Boat International,    Bloomberg

The Octopus' most recent owner acquired the megaboat in 2021, Francesca Webster reported for Superyacht Times. Shortly after, it joined Camper and Nicholsons' fleet for chartering opportunities.

Source: Superyacht Times

And since then, it's seen plenty of interest: The Octopus has already been reserved for three weeks this winter, and its yacht firm is now seeing requests for month-long excursions next summer in the Mediterranean, K Oanh Ha reported for Bloomberg.

The Octopus isn't the only luxury yacht seeing plenty of public interest.

Across the industry, agencies specializing in chartering these expensive yachts have seen plenty of interest. This includes luxury travel agency Fischer Travel Enterprises, which has seen a 20% increase in superyacht bookings this year compared to last year, according to Bloomberg.

But the Octopus isn't like other yachts. Instead, it has helipads, multiple bars, and water toys like seven tenders.

The megayacht can accommodate 12 guests — whether it be friends, family, or researchers — within its 13 cabins across three decks.

These cabins include a primary suite with a private elevator and an observation deck ...

… two "VIP" suites, and seven double and three twin staterooms.

To make sure everything is running smoothly, the eight-deck yacht has room for 42 crew members, a crew to passenger ratio of about one to three-and-a-half.

The Octopus has amenities that can be found on a luxury cruise ship, like a large swimming pool, spa and gym, library, and an observation lounge.

But with a multimillion-dollar price tag, you'd probably expect more than just the typical cruise ship amenities.

Well, you're in luck. The Octopus also has two helipads, an aquarium with a glass bottom, a movie theater …

… a hyperbaric chamber, and a water toy collection that includes seven tenders, electric foils, and its own marina.

The typical cruiseliner and ultra-luxury yacht might have a pool, but they likely don't compare to the exclusivity of the Octopus'.

The ship can accommodate 12 people, but the pool and jacuzzi are surrounded by enough outdoor seating for a large party, a bar, and an extensive dining table ...

... which will be perfect for outdoor lounging during multi-day charters around South and Central America, the Pacific Ocean, and northern Europe, which will run during the summer and winter.

Its ice-class hull also makes the Octopus durable enough to sail in colder climates like Antarctica, which has become a popular choice for travelers this winter.

To take advantage of this, Camper and Nicholsons has seven-day, $2.2 million Antarctica itineraries sailing during the winter to give visitors an in-depth look at the continent.

This includes polar plunges followed by champagne in a hot tub, a look at seals and humpback whales in the wild, and hikes on a nearby island …

Source: Camper and Nicholsons

… all with the expensive comforts of one of the most luxurious yachts on the high seas.

Lürssen mega yacht OCTOPUS , which belonged to the late Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft, has been put up for sale at an estimated €295,000,000 (approximately $332,000,000 USD).

Paul Allen’s yacht OCTOPUS listed for sale

Allen, who passed away from cancer in 2018, owned a number of vessels but at a length of 126m/413ft M/Y OCTOPUS was his flagship and remains one of the world’s largest motor yachts, currently sitting at no. 22 in the overall rankings.

M/Y OCTOPUS was built in 2003 and from November 2018 to July 2019 she underwent an eight-month refurbishment at the Blohm + Voss facilities, including her 15-year surveys, to prepare her for sale. Her exteriors come from renowned designer Espen Oeino and the interiors from Seattle-based Jonathan Quinn Barnett , who had an impressive interior volume of 9,932 GT to furnish.

Although Paul Allen used the vessel as a recording studio and for private parties with the likes of U2, Sharon Stone and Mick Jagger, he is most well-known for his philanthropic endeavours and M/Y OCTOPUS was used as a research vessel along with several other motor yachts in his fleet, and was critical to the retrieval of the bell from HMS HOOD, which was sunk by the German battleship BISMARCK, as well as discovering the wrecks of the WWII Japanese warship MUSASHI.

The accommodation is designed for up to 26 guests over 13 spacious en-suite cabins, and in addition to the Master suite there is a VIP stateroom and a children’s cabin. The experienced crew of 63 is ready to pull off a glamorous party or to navigate to the farthest corners of the world for research purposes.

The private Owner’s deck (also the bridge deck) comes with the aforementioned recording studio with a floor designed with sound dampening properties, a Master suite with a walk-in-wardrobe and an alfresco dining area that has its own bar and whirlpool tub. The other guests are not left wanting as M/Y OCTOPUS is replete with entertainment options such as a cinema, spa with hammam and sauna, gym, basketball court, an observation lounge and a heated freshwater swimming pool with a glass retractable floor to become a flush entertaining space. The selection of water toys is also impressive and created as much for family fun as exploration of the environment, and among the collection is a 10-pax submarine.

In terms of her technical specifications, there are eight MTU 16V 4000 M70 engines that provide a top speed of 19 knots and a cruising speed of 18 knots, however most notable is her impressive cruising range of 14,250 nautical miles.

She is built to ICE-Class 1A standards and is equipped with a helipad forward and aft, both of which have access to a hangar for storage.

Luxury yacht OCTOPUS can currently be seen moored at the Antibes marina as she awaits a buyer.

The amazing superyachts of Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen

$300m of pure nautical grandeur.

Words: Josh Lee

The world’s richest men have some pretty interesting retail habits. It’s reported that Jay Leno, for example, owns just under 300 vehicles; John Malone , the single largest landlord in America, possesses around 2.2m acres of terrain; Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, however, sticks to splurging on yachts. $300m-worth of mega yachts, to be precise. And, with a real time net worth of $20.8b in his pocket, do you really blame him?

We dive into the specifics of his vessel collection.

superyachts microsoft

Cost: approximately $200m. It was custom-built by German shipbuilders Lürssen (the company that crafted the Azzam, the world’s largest private yacht), and after several years of construction it was launched in 2003.

Cost of operation: on average, yacht owners tend to pay around 10% of the original purchase price each year for maintenance and on-board operations. By that logic, Allen pays around $20m per annum in order to keep his vessel in pristine shape and he currently employs 60 permanent staffers, including engineers, chefs and captains.

Accommodates: 26 guests in 41 suites.

superyachts microsoft

Specs: this behemoth is 414-foot and weighs over 9,000 tonnes. When it launched, it was the biggest private yacht in the world. Even the tender – the boat that takes guests from boat to shore – is 63-foot long.

Comes with: pool, two helipads (one at the front and back), basketball court, recording studio (which was used by Mick Jagger in 2011), cinema, jet-ski dock, glass-bottom pool and bar. There are also two submarines inside: one of them, Pagoo, can carry ten people and dive for eight hours; the other, the Octo Rov, can dive up to 8,843 feet, can be remotely controlled and has also been used for a documentary on the Discovery Science Channel.

This vessel isn’t just for leisure: in 2012, the Royal Navy borrowed it in order to find a bell from a British WWII-era battleship. That same year, it was also used to search for a missing American pilot and two officers whose plane disappeared off Palau. Octopus is also part of the Automated Mutual-Assistance Vessel Rescue (AMVER), meaning it can be used to assist other ships in hazardous situations.

superyachts microsoft

Cost: Approximately $100m. It was built by 112-year-old shipyard Nobiskrug in Rendsburg, Germany and was finished in June, 2000. The design and construction was by Kusch Yachts. A year after she was constructed, Tatoosh was purchased by Allen.

Accommodates: 20 guests in ten cabins.

Specs: this gargantuan sea beast is 303-foot, making it the 43rd-largest superyacht in the world. It can go 15 knots while cruising and has a range of 5,000 nautical miles.

superyachts microsoft

Cost of operation: approximately $10m a year is spent on upkeep and for running a crew of 35 members.

Comes with: a cinema, two helipads, custom 46 power and sailboats, shaded swimming pool , a saloon with a French limestone fireplace, a dining area, a master suite and five decks.

This vessel has caused some controversy: at the beginning of 2016, it was reported that the Tatoosh destroyed around 80% of a protected coral reef in the Cayman Islands. It’s said that the accident was caused by the yacht’s chain when it anchored near The Knife dive site. Four months later, the Department of Environment and Allen’s Vulcan Inc. completed a restoration plan to help to save the injured coral.

The superyacht of Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen is in Reykjavík harbour

By Staff | Jul 23 2015

The Octopus Paul Allen's superyacht is ranked the ninth largest privately owned yacht in the world. No word whether Paul Allen is on-board or not. Photo/Anton Brink.

Travellers in Reykjavík might have noticed a giant yacht parked in the sound outside the old harbour. The superyacht, named The Octopus, is one of the largest privately owned yachts in the world and belongs to Microsoft co-founder and billionaire Paul Allen. It is not known whether Allen is visiting Iceland along with his yacht. Allen, and his yacht, have previously visited Iceland on several occasions.

The first visit by the Octopus to Iceland was in 2010. Allen and his girlfriend flew to Iceland in a private jet and stayed on-board the yacht to celebrate her 30th birthday. The ship will remain in Iceland until mid-August.

Two helicopters, two submersibles The Octopus ranks as the ninth largest privately owned super-yacht. It is 126 meters (414 feet) long, making it 50-60 meters (164-197 feet) longer than the largest trawlers in the Icelandic fleet. It is equipped with a helipad and two helicopters as well as two submersibles. Allen has used the yacht as a base to pursue his passions, which are the study of marine archaeology and shipwrecks, but especially underwater volcanism and geothermal activity on the seabed.

“The yacht is a dream come true for scientists. It is the best equipped ocean research vessel in the world,“ argues Icelandic volcanologist Haraldur Sigurðsson who has worked closely with Allen in the past. Haraldur has travelled with Paul Allen around the world to study volcanoes, both above ground and those on the seabed. Recently he accompanied Allen to Papua New Guinea and the Salomon Islands to study underwater geothermal vents.

In an interview with the local news service Visir.is Haraldur refuses to say whether or not Allen is on-board the yacht. He also stresses that none of the studies which will be undertaken from aboard the yacht require permits, since the submersibles will not touch or disturb the seabed.

Marine archaeology and the Battle of the Atlantic Haraldur tells Visir.is that the Octopus has not only studied geothermal activity or underwater volcanoes:

“The Octopus has also studied the Battleship Hood, which was the largest battleship of the British Navy in the Second World War. It sank between Iceland and Greenland in the second half of the war, after being attacked by the German Battleship Bismarck. The wreck of Hood has now been found, and the Octopus has participated in studies of the wreck which lies at a depth of 3 km (1.9 miles).“

Microsoft co-founder Allen’s luxury yacht ‘Octopus’ at Aydin, Turkey in 2015.

Secret buyer nabs Microsoft grandee’s superyacht for £200m

For £1m a week you can rent 126-metre ship built for Paul Allen, with two helicopters, two subs and a recording studio

A vast “explorer class” superyacht built for Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen has been sold for almost £200m, and is now available to rent for anyone with about a £1m to drop for a week.

Octopus was the world’s largest yacht when she was built for Allen in 2003 and the 126-metre vessel marked a turning point in superyacht design, capable of being used for deep sea exploration as well as living a life of luxury on the high seas.

On the market since Allen’s death in 2018, the superyacht was originally listed for sale at €295m (£250m) before being reduced to €235m. It is believed to have sold for slightly under the asking price. The Allen family office declined to comment.

Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen died aged 65 in 2018.

The identity of the Scandinavian buyer is unknown, but it is to be made available for charter via Mayfair-based yacht broker Camper & Nicholsons . The broker, which declined to comment, has not yet set a weekly rental price. However, other very large superyachts can cost as much as £1m a week to rent.

Octopus, the yacht of Microsoft Corp. co-founder billionaire Paul Allen, moored off Venice’s Grand Canal in 2005.

In 2019, Kylie Jenner, the Keeping up with the Kardashians reality TV star and cosmetics empire billionaire, spent €1.1m chartering the 91.5m (300ft) yacht Tranquility .

The eight-deck Octopus has 13 guest suites, including a private owner’s deck. There is also a cinema, a gym, a spa, a basketball court, a pool (which converts into a dancefloor) and a pizza oven. It features not one but two helicopters, two submarines and space for seven tenders and a large SUV. The yacht has quarters for up to 63 crew.

Allen, a keen adventurer, asked superyacht designer Espen Øino to create a yacht capable of carrying out expeditions. “It was a very ambitious brief, because none of the tenders, tools, RVs, subs, helicopters could be outside – they should all be concealed,” Øino has said.

The Octopus pops up in June 2020.

The ship was used by the Titanic director, James Cameron, for a dive to the bottom of the 10,925 metres to the Mariana trench, the deepest point in the world.

Allen also used the ship to help to recover the bell from the British battleship HMS Hood, which was sunk by the Bismarck in the North Atlantic.

“When I first stood on the bridge, I felt as though I was on a spaceship,” Allen wrote in his autobiography Idea Man. He said having a pool, basketball court, cinema, and recording studio on the boat meant “all my passions come together in one movable feast”.

Paul Allen’s yacht Octopus moored at Canary Wharf during the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

“It turns out if you go 1,000 ft down in the ocean, it’s really dark, and the animals are really strange,” Allen said in 2011. “But if you put on some Pink Floyd, it’s fantastic.”

The onboard recording studio has been used by Mick Jagger, Bono, Usher and Joss Stone. Øino has said equipping the recording studio to Allen’s demands had been a particular challenge.

“Mr Allen’s interest in music was enormous and the acoustic quality was nothing less than a shore-based one,” Øino said. “There were 54 tonnes of AV/IT equipment aboard. A very complex boat in many ways. I think he loved it.”

Big AI’s ‘reverse acqui-hire’ deals get more scrutiny in the U.K. and U.S.

Satya Nadella, chief executive officer of Microsoft Corp., speaks during the company event on AI technologies in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Tuesday, April 30, 2024.

When Microsoft dropped its observer seat on OpenAI’s board last week—and Apple abandoned reported plans to gain such a seat—the uptick in regulatory scrutiny around the AI sector was a clear culprit . And the scope of that scrutiny just widened further.

The U.K.’s antitrust regulator, the Competition and Markets Authority, yesterday gave notice that it’s in the early stages of probing Microsoft’s March hiring of key staff from AI startup Inflection , which came with $650 million in licensing fees for Inflection.

The hired crew included Inflection cofounder Mustafa Suleyman, who now runs Microsoft’s in-house AI efforts. This seemed to be a case of Microsoft trying to avoid becoming over-reliant on OpenAI, into which it has invested $13 billion for a profit share. But authorities also want to check that the nature of the deal (a so-called reverse acqui-hire, as a more traditional acqui-hire would involve buying the company) wasn’t also a tactic to sidestep antitrust rules that might be more clearly triggered by a straightforward acquisition.

The CMA’s initial probe formally begins today, and the watchdog will decide by Sept. 11 whether to press on with a proper merger investigation.

Meanwhile, Reuters reports that the U.S. Federal Trade Commission—which has already been nosing around the Microsoft-Inflection deal since early June—is also asking questions about Amazon’s deal with AI startup Adept late last month.

This was a very similar arrangement, with CEO David Luan and other key Adept players joining Amazon and Amazon paying Adept to license its technology. One might also see a parallel between Microsoft’s earlier OpenAI investment and Amazon’s earlier investment of $4 billion into OpenAI rival Anthropic.

Apart from the difference in dynamics stemming from the fact that OpenAI is so far a much bigger name than Anthropic, there does seem to be a playbook here, and it’s no surprise that U.S. and U.K. ( and EU ) regulators would like to know if rules are being skirted. U.S. lawmakers are certainly upset about the trend. “A few companies control a major portion of the market, and just concentrate—rather than on innovation—trying to buy out everybody else’s talent,” complained Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Or.) last week.

Incidentally, there are also a couple more interesting news tidbits out there about AI regulation.

First, King Charles III announced today that the U.K.’s new Labour government will “seek to establish the appropriate legislation to place requirements on those working to develop the most powerful artificial intelligence models”—a big shift from the previous Conservative government’s hands-off approach.

Second, with the EU now having officially published its own AI Act—its rules on model-makers will begin to apply from February next year—European privacy regulators said yesterday that they would be the right ones to enforce the new law in many cases. “I strongly believe that [data protection authorities] are suitable for this role because of their full independence and deep understanding of the risks of AI for fundamental rights, based on their existing experience,” said Irene Loizidou Nicolaidou, deputy chair of the watchdogs’ umbrella body, the European Data Protection Board, in a statement.

Of course, AI has been a big theme at Fortune ’s Brainstorm Tech conference in Park City, Utah, this week, as my colleague Jeremy Kahn wrote yesterday . I was particularly intrigued by Jeremy’s chat with Google chief scientist Jeff Dean , who warned against people overplaying AI’s role in his company’s rising carbon emissions.

“There’s been a lot of focus on the increasing energy usage of AI, and from a very small base that usage is definitely increasing,” Dean said. “But I think people often conflate that with overall data center usage—of which AI is a very small portion right now but growing fast—and then attribute the growth rate of AI-based computing to the overall data center usage.”

A fair point, for now. But I think the criticisms of AI’s massive hunger for energy will remain valid until companies like Google and Microsoft can prove that rolling it out doesn’t mean deviating from their emissions-reduction goals.

Trump knocks TSMC. Former and possibly future President Donald Trump said in remarks published yesterday that Taiwan should pay the U.S., which is “no different than an insurance company,” for defense. “They did take about 100% of our chip business,” he complained to Bloomberg Businessweek , adding that Taiwan was far away from the U.S. and very close to China, which sees it as a renegade province. The report on his stance knocked the shares of TSMC, the Taiwanese contract chipmaker that is crucial to the tech industry, down 5%.

TikTok antitrust trouble. TikTok operator ByteDance has lost a legal bid to be designated as a “gatekeeper” under the EU’s new antitrust law, the Digital Markets Act, Reuters reports . ByteDance can still appeal the decision by the EU’s General Court, but it seems it will have to abide by rules around things like providing interoperability with other services, and not processing users’ data for targeted advertising without their express consent.

Anthropic + Menlo Ventures. Menlo Ventures has a new $100 million fund for AI startups that use Anthropic’s Claude AI models, Bloomberg reports . Anthropic, which counts Menlo among its investors, will provide model-use credits as well as networking opportunities. While it won’t get any stakes in the startups, it will of course promote use of its models. Side note: Android users finally have their own Claude app now.

—The injury rate suffered by Amazon’s warehouse workers during Prime Day 2019, according to a Sen. Bernie Sanders-penned Senate committee report . “Prime Day and the holiday season are characterized by extremely high volume and intense pressure to work long hours and ignore safety guidelines,” the report states. Amazon responded to the allegations by saying “the safety and health of our employees is and always will be our top priority.”

Bitcoin’s not-inventor could face charges. Craig Wright tried to convince the world he was Bitcoin’s pseudonymous inventor Satoshi Nakamoto, but crypto firms took him to court in the U.K. and he lost resoundingly earlier this year. Now, the judge who ruled that Wright “extensively and repeatedly” lied to his court, by producing bogus documents and testimony, said he’s asking the Crown Prosecution Service to figure out if the Australian computer scientist should face criminal perjury and forgery charges. “In advancing his false claim to be Satoshi through multiple legal actions, Dr Wright committed ‘a most serious abuse’ of the process of the courts of the U.K., Norway and the USA,” wrote James Mellor in a ruling yesterday, according to the Guardian .
