ThirtyC presents new 53m superyacht concept
The new concept has been designed for the new generation of superyacht owners….
British design studio ThirtyC has unveiled a new 53m superyacht concept which has been created in line with a shifting market place. Named Komodo , the new concept has been designed to cater to the new generation of superyacht owners who would lead an active and adventurous lifestyle at sea.
“We felt the market needed a yacht aimed at the younger generation or the ‘Silicon Valley’ owner,” says Alastair Fletcher, Design Director of ThirtyC. “It started from some initial sketches, with an emphasis on low profile design and key styling elements - namely the roof glazing over the upper saloon - which continued to develop into a sporty, go-anywhere yacht."
The new concept features an interesting glazed roof which can slide back to unveil a large viewing platform on the upper deck. Right from the start of the project, the extensive usage of glass has played a pivotal role in the overall design, the intention being that it will open up the yacht’s interior through the wealth of natural light. Earlier sketches of the project also featured glass skylines, sliding walls and moving roof panes, which creative director, Rob Armstrong says are inspired by London’s Natural History Museum.
"We wanted to create something that would be a statement for a boat of this size and feature characteristics you would only find on a 70 metre plus superyacht, all the while maintaining a realistic lead time in build." - Rob Armstrong, ThirtyC
“It’s a modern take on the large ceilings of Victorian buildings, much like the Natural History Museum,” says Armstrong. “We wanted to create something that would be a statement for a boat of this size and feature characteristics you would only find on a 70 metre plus superyacht, all the while maintaining a realistic lead time in build."
“ Komodo is aimed at a more relaxed lifestyle,” continues Fletcher. “Widespread, casual cruising with an emphasis on outdoor living and water sports. There are many features designed to open up the interior space as well, removing tired or formal boundaries associated with compartmentalised living.”
“ Komodo is ideally suited to exotic island cruising,” adds Armstrong. “Thanks to her size and easily manoeuvrable dimensions, more remote destinations immediately become more accessible. This doesn’t mean that her lean profile limits her accommodation. In fact, the volume is exceptional for a yacht of this size, and her characteristic glazed areas, open spaces, double-height salon and natural light all bring the feeling of space and the outdoors into the interior.”
Flexibility is another one of the project’s core elements, offering a choice of customisation, from the propulsion systems to the layout and styling of the yacht’s interior. Currently however, the interiors have been designed to promote a relaxed environment, with large open spaces throughout.

Next Generation Design: ThirtyC Studio Launches
By Ben Roberts
As superyacht design enters a new revolutionary era of creative thinking, designers Rob Armstrong and Alistair Fletcher have launched ThirtyC - a multi-disciplinary design consultancy specialising in interior and exterior superyacht design.
“As a design consultancy, we undertake all aspects of the design and development of a project,” explains Rob Armstrong, Creative Director of ThirtyC. “We offer a full range of services from GA layouts, detailed cabin drawings, 3D visualisation, conceptual development illustration, colour schemes and full material and finish specification through to all marketing and associated promotional material.”
The design workload within the yacht industry can vary and the need for skilled, experienced, hands-on designers can be essential to meet the deadlines at various stages of a project.
“At ThirtyC we have experienced this fluctuation in workload and changing pressure first hand, and as such, offer a full consultancy service to design studios, whereby we can help absorb some of that workload at peak times. Our wide range of skills combined with many years of experience allows us to easily step in and assist when and where needed.
Having worked for some of the most recognised names in the superyacht Industry, from Designers, Yards, outfitters and specialist artisans, we can draw upon the varied styles and genres that the projects have covered and apply this knowledge and experience to future work and collaborations.”
Based in Chichester, the ThirtyC team work with a number of design professionals across the globe; however, with a core team dedicated to design and visualisation, detailed CAD and supervision support, as well as interior specification and material selection, the ThirtyC studio is set for a promising future.

Star Wars Featured in ThirtyC Yacht Design
May 4, 2020
May the Fourth Be With You!
ThirtyC is a superyacht design consultancy based in the United Kingdom. The company began in 2015 and launched a series of images of Star Wars characters on superyachts for Star Wars Day, May 4th. As founder Rob Armstrong says, “just for fun.” Thanks to their creative imagination we get to visualize Star Wars themed superyachts and tenders.
“Over the years, our images have gained more exposure and almost become expected,” Armstrong said. “Each year is a challenge to think up a new creative angle for our audience and friends.”
The agency has photoshopped Star Wars characters and vehicles on some renowned super yachts. For instance, the SilverFast , Eclipse , and many Damen support vessels are shown in the photos below. Armstrong mentioned that these yachts are the perfect canvas for his work, however, he also mentioned that some credit must go to all the yacht photographers for the fantastic images.
Legendary Star Wars vehicles, including W-Wings, AT-ATs- and Tie Fighters have been photoshopped into his work.
Each year they have a different Star Wars theme they like to focus on. This year they decided to insert the franchise’s most popular characters, including Darth Vadar, into a selection of yacht tenders. These include the Cockwells Titian Tender, 48 Wallytender and Vandal 14m Open chase boats. Although, ThirtyC’s work is very impressing, we are a little sad we didn’t get to see any Baby Yoda’s on a bow.
As another May 4th passes, ThirtyC is already looking ahead to next year. “We will start brainstorming for next year,” Armstrong said, “but all ideas are very welcome.”

Mike Lynch and daughter among six missing after yacht sinks: What we know about disaster - and 'alarming' potential cause
One person is confirmed to have died after the British-flagged luxury vessel named Bayesian sank, with 22 people on board. Sky News looks at what we know about the tragedy.

British tech billionaire Mike Lynch and his daughter are among six people missing after a superyacht sank in a storm off the coast of Sicily - with one person confirmed to have died.
Twenty-two people were on board the vessel, 15 of whom were rescued - including Briton Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter Sofia.
Four other Britons and two Americans remain missing, including Mr Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, according to Italian media. The entrepreneur's wife Angela Bacares was rescued.
Here's what we know about the sinking of the luxury vessel so far.
Follow live: People missing after superyacht sinks
What might have caused the sinking?
The British-flagged luxury vessel, named the Bayesian, capsized at around 4.30am local time off Palermo, according to ship-tracking site Marine Traffic.
It sank with 22 people on board - 12 passengers and a crew of 10, according to the Italian coastguard.
Waterspouts, essentially tornados which form over water, were seen as powerful winds battered the area overnight, local media said.
The yacht may have also tipped over more easily with all the doors open due to the hot weather, Sailing Today magazine editor Sam Jefferson has said.
"I imagine all the doors were open because it was hot, so there were enough hatches and doors open that it filled with water very quickly and sank like that," he said.
"The reason it got pinned over so hard was because the mast is huge. It acted almost like a sail. [It] pushed the boat hard over on its side. (The boat) filled with water before it could right."
Official pictures show air conditioning units in several of the rooms, however, which could counter the suggestion open windows caused the vessel to sink faster.
What are waterspouts?
Waterspouts typically occur during thunderstorms and can develop very rapidly, within minutes.
Their spin generally reaches wind speeds between 75-200mph, but can reach as high as 300mph.
They can travel at around 10-20mph typically but can reach greater speeds, making them difficult to avoid - especially in something as slow-moving as a yacht.
Matthew Schanck, chair of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, called the reports of a tornado or waterspout "rare" and "quite alarming".
"The vessel was at anchor in a recognised anchorage," Mr Schanck said.
"Depending on wind direction and the state of the sea, this informs the captain whether it is a safe area to anchor or not. There was nothing that was too concerning, for my eye. All in all, the captain used the information they had to make a safe call."
Who owns the yacht?
British tech tycoon Mike Lynch is among those missing.
The 59-year-old owner of the yacht is known as the "British Bill Gates" and has been in the headlines in recent months over a high-profile fraud case.
In June, a US jury cleared him of all charges , which were related to the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard (HP).
HP accused him of deliberately overstating the value of the company before it was acquired by the American tech giant.
Mr Lynch was extradited to the US to face trial in May last year and spent 13 months under house arrest in San Francisco as he awaited trial on 17 charges of conspiracy and wire fraud brought by the US Department of Justice - which were later reduced to 15 charges. He always denied any wrongdoing and was acquitted.

Who was on board when the boat sank?
The vessel had passengers from Britain, America and Canada, the Italian coastguard said.
Most of those on board were British, Italian news outlets have reported, adding that the others were from New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and Ireland.
Charlotte Golunski was among the Britons rescued. Her LinkedIn profile says she is a partner at Mr Lynch's firm Invoke Capital and has worked there since 2012.
Speaking after the ordeal, Ms Golunski told Italian media that she lost her daughter Sofia for "two seconds" amid the "fury" of the sea but was able to retrieve her. She said she held the infant above the waves until the lifeboat was ready.
"Many people screamed. Luckily the lifeboat inflated and 11 of us were able to get on board," she told ANSA.
The girl's father James Emsley also survived, according to Sicily's civil protection agency.
Also on board were Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of investment bank Morgan Stanley, his wife Judy Bloomer, a top US lawyer Chris Morvillo, who worked on Mr Lynch's criminal case, and his wife Neda Morvillo.
Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian-Antiguan chef who was working on the boat, has been found dead, the Italian Coastguard has confirmed to Sky News.
Eight of those rescued were transferred to local hospitals and all were in stable condition, local media reported.
During rescue efforts, divers saw "corpses through the portholes" of the wreck as they recovered the body of a man at a depth of 50m (164ft), according to Salvo Cocina, the head of the Civil Protection of Sicily.
What do we know about the vessel?
The Bayesian was known for its unusual 72.3m (246ft) single mast - one of the world's tallest made of aluminium - and shared its name with the statistical method Mr Lynch's Autonomy software was based on.
It was built by Italian company Perini Navi in 2008 and last refitted in 2020.
It was listed for rent for up to €195,000 (£166,000) a week, according to online charter sites.
The luxury vessel, which was managed by yachting company Camper & Nicholsons, can accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites.
It won a string of awards for its design, according to online specialist yacht sites.
Mr Schanck said the vessel would have been equipped with "high standard" life-saving appliances and radio communications. He added the yacht would have met all international standards and UK maritime coastguard agency regulations before its voyage.

The boat left the Sicilian port of Milazzo on 14 August and was last tracked east of Palermo on Sunday evening, with a navigation status of "at anchor", according to vessel tracking site VesselFinder.
The Bayesian previously travelled to other parts of Sicily before its last sighting off the coast of the port of Porticello.
On Sunday, the boat was seen off the coast of Cefalu before it travelled towards Porticello, MarineTraffic data shows.
In the days before, the yacht travelled around four of the Aeolian islands, just north of Sicily.
It was previously named Salute, or "health" in Italian, when it flew under a Dutch flag. Its minimalist interior featured light wood with Japanese accents designed by the French designer Remi Tessier, according to descriptions on charter sites.

dynamic, elegant, and sporty exterior design
The Riva 56’ Rivale’s open yacht design expands the iconic Italian brand ’s fleet, embodying dynamism, elegance, and sportiness. Created by Officina Italiana Design and both the Ferretti Group’s Product Strategy Committee and Engineering Department, this 56-foot masterpiece features large glazed windows, flush portholes, and a sleek aquamarine line that highlights its striking metallic exterior. The use of premium materials – high gloss mahogany, natural teak, stainless steel, and superior leather – ensures every detail is luxurious.
A unique windshield not only protects the cockpit but also completes the aerodynamic profile of the yacht. The cockpit’s main deck lounge offers a spacious sitting area with an L-shaped sofa and teak dining table. This convivial space extends in the front and back to create a seamless flow of elegance and comfort: a large sun pad facing rearwards; and a raised dormeuse in the forward section, shaded by an electro-hydraulically operated bimini top, and framed by a stainless steel and a vintage-inspired warning horn.
high performance on the sea
The bridge is equipped with state-of-the-art control, monitoring, and navigation systems featuring touchscreen displays. Behind the control station, a well-appointed cabin unit includes all guests need with a bar, practical waste collection containers, and storage compartments integrated into the helm seat. From here, the captain controls either the twin 1000hp or 1200hp MAN engines with V-drive propulsion systems. This propels the yacht to cruising speeds of 31 or 34 knots and maximum speeds of 35 or 38 knots — depending on the engine of choice — showcasing excellence in design and performance.
At the stern, the garage houses a Williams 325 tender, protected by a tach in double-shell carbon fiber. A major innovation of the 56’ Rivale is the underwater movement of the swimming platform, with additional steps in the hull providing a convenient stairway for water access.
luxury lounges and cabins below deck
Below deck, guests are treated to an elegant lounge-dinette where mirrored surfaces alternate with varnished mahogany, dark lacquered woods, and dark leather coverings. The interplay of colors and materials is quintessentially Riva, with sofas and ottoman seats upholstered in fabric by Ivano Redaelli, and wall-to-wall carpet by Van Besouw. The gallery, partially hidden by mirrored walls and sliding lacquered surfaces, features abundant storage and a unit with a bar set.
The sleeping quarters include two en-suite cabins, mirroring the luxurious color and material interplay of the lounge. Striking contrasts between white leather headboards and dark leather furnishings create an inviting atmosphere for guests. Soft furnishings by Ivano Redaelli and Van Besouw add to this opulent ambience. A single-bed crew cabin, with separate access from the cockpit, can be replaced by a third guest cabin if desired. The result is a home away from home on the open sea.
