Post-tribune | running rings around drowning hazards: state law requiring life preservers is already saving lives.

Indiana Dunes National Park spokesperson Bruce Rowe said life rings in weatherproof cases were placed at Porter Beach and Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk last year.

A new law taking effect July 1 requires the life rings to be located at entrances to public beaches along the Lake Michigan shoreline. State Sen. Rodney Pol, D-Chesterton, authored the legislation. Last year, the bill easily sailed through the Senate but was blocked in the House. This year, he was able to get it past the House and signed into law.

Pol is very familiar with Porter Beach. “I grew up out on that beach,” he said.

“I always hear about those drownings, and it was always a serious concern of mine,” Pol said.

During Pol’s first Senate session, Beverly Shores resident Carmen Hernandez approached him about getting life rings on Indiana’s Lake Michigan beaches. Illinois had just required them.

Hernandez’s sister nearly drowned, but her boyfriend wasn’t as lucky. Since then, the sister has become a huge advocate of beach safety and a volunteer with the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project.

Pol’s sister-in-law pushed him to try again this year to get the legislation passed. She’s a Portage police officer and dive team member.

“She had called me June 6 or 7 last year called and said, ‘I got a question. Where the hell are those life rings?’” Pol recounted. “I had to explain there was not enough support from the chair and some of the folks that were skeptical of it. Even though it passed with flying colors out of the Senate, that’s just the process. Sometimes things die and you don’t really get much of an explanation.

“She said, ‘You need to get your ***** back down there and get that bill passed.’ I asked why, and she said, ‘I just about drowned out in the lake looking for a young boy that unfortunately passed away.”

The boy’s grandfather didn’t have a cell phone with him, so he went to his house to call 911. “When my sister-in-law heard the call, she went straight to the beach. That’s where she found the grandfather. She just stripped down and got in the water.”

The water was cold and choppy. She started struggling right away, and she’s a very strong swimmer, Pol said. She found a little shoe floating in the water and ended up finding the boy up against the rocks.

“She was pretty pissed that we didn’t get that bill passed, so I had my marching orders after that,” Pol said. “It’s not just for the visitors but also our public safety officials out there as well.”

‘My son would be here today’

Pol estimates the total cost of installing the life rings in weatherproof cases at $100,000, with a cost of up to $1,000 for each life ring.

That pales in comparison to the $500,000 cost of a 24-hour search-and-rescue operation, he said. That kind of operation involves “getting a boat in the water and a bird in the air” to search for the body.

That’s just the financial equation. There’s also the value of saving lives, which is priceless.

Sharon Kenning knows this well. Her son, Tom Kenning, drowned while saving a girl at Porter Beach two years ago.

“I wish that life rings were there two years ago so my son would be here today,” she said.

Dave Benjamin, executive director of Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project, let Sharon know about the rescue last Sunday, telling her, “Tom saved two more lives.”

Tom’s death was an impetus for Pol’s legislation. Sharon recounted that tragedy from two years ago. “Honestly, had there been a life ring on that beach where there is one today, right across from where he drowned, he would be here today,” Sharon said. “He was literally inches from being able to grab that girl’s hand, and he kept inching out to try and get to her.”

“He’s standing waist-high on a sandbar, but he reached out far enough that he got sucked in and it cost him his life,” she said. Had that ring been available then, he could have used it, but there was nothing.

“My husband ran to the state park lifeguard chair looking for a life ring and there was nothing there and the lifeguards weren’t out because the beach was closed. But there was no red flag saying the beach was closed, so people were going in the water. The lifeguards were in the pavilion and they came running after my husband alerted them, but it was too late,” Sharon said.

“We want all of our public buildings to have fire extinguishers and AEDs and sprinkler systems in case there’s a fire or someone has a heart attack,” she said. “We invite people to our public beaches as part of tourism, and their guard is down because it’s beautiful and they want to have fun. What happens when something goes wrong? There’s nothing – nothing – to assist and we can’t wait for someone to come; it happens too fast.”

“My last words to my son were, ‘Don’t do it. You’re not a good enough swimmer.’ He thought he could go out waist-deep and actually reach her. He wasn’t swimming out to her; he thought he could reach her, and he went just a little too far. He got hit by a big wave, and that was the last we saw of him.”

Sharon, her husband, Tom’s 9-year-old daughter, his niece and nephew witnessed all of this, she said.

“It just seems like a no-brainer. Why aren’t we putting life rings on piers and public beaches that we’re inviting people to come to?”

Sunday’s rescue ‘went really well’

Porter Police Chief Todd Allen said a life ring had been placed at Porter Beach earlier, but it went missing. He suspects a winter storm may have taken it. The replacement is in a weatherproof case.

Last Sunday’s rescue “went really well,” he said. A police department Facebook post tells the dramatic story.

That evening, police were made aware of a possible drowning at Porter Beach. Lt. J. Holaway immediately noticed a life ring missing from its post. Beachgoers told him it was being used to rescue juveniles and directed him to them.

Friends said they saw a girl struggling in the water. Visitors banded together and pulled her to shore. While doing so, they saw another girl struggling in the water further west. While a boy ran to the life ring, one of the good Samaritans yelled for someone to call the police. The boy then ran back to the scene and handed the life ring to a man who swam toward the struggling swimmer.

The girl was about 50 yards from shore. While Holaway remained on the beach to direct additional emergency personnel, he saw the girl go underwater and resurface. Her rescuer tossed the life ring to her and pulled her to shore.

The girls were reunited with their parents and ultimately refused further treatment.

The life ring was purchased by the Porter Fire Department and installed by the Porter Street Department on May 24. This is the first time the life ring has been used since being installed.

Allen and Porter Fire Chief Jay Craig praised the beachgoers for their heroism and quick action.

Craig said even though the new law doesn’t go into effect until July 1, the town was proactive and installed a life ring last year.

“With Lake Michigan here, it’s a constant battle,” Allen said.

Donations helped pay for the life ring already installed and are encouraged for additional life rings, he said.

Pol hopes Homeland Security grants will be available for them as well.

He remembers swimming in Lake Michigan when he was younger. “The bigger the waves, the more fun they were. There were definitely some times where you get out there and you’d be just terrified. All of a sudden, you started feeling your feet pull from underneath you and you get freaked out because you go underwater and you don’t know what’s up and what’s down because you’ve been thrown around so much,” he said.

Beachgoers aware of safety

Beth Bentley, of Portsmouth, Ohio, was at Porter Beach on Wednesday with her children. The lake was calm. “They all know how to swim really well,” but she warned them to stay close just in case.

Katie Djuric, of Munster, was at Porter Beach with her kids as well. “I nearly drowned in Lake Michigan,” she said, during a cardiac event. “I don’t remember any of it, but my mom can tell you it was pretty scary.”

She’s cautious with her sons Luka, 10, and Novak, 7. “Hey guys, too far,” she yelled to them.

“I don’t let them get past the first sandbar,” she said, and if there are waves, they have to wear a flotation device like a life jacket.

“We haven’t had an incident. I try to keep them out of it.”

Toni Trombo, of Morrison, Illinois, is a newbie. “Actually, this is the first time I’ve ever been to the Great Lakes,” she said.

She knows firsthand about rip currents, however.

“In North Carolina, I got actually pulled in a rip tide, so I actually had to swim parallel to the shore,” she said. That was about 12 years ago.

“It had a lasting effect. I’ll be honest. I’m a strong swimmer, but I had trouble in that rip tide,” Trombo said.

Morrison, Ill. resident Toni Trombo speaks about her experience with riptides, and how she keeps her daughters and herself safe in large bodies of water, as they spend time at Porter Beach on Wednesday, June 26, 2024. (Kyle Telechan/for the Post-Tribune)

Sara Firestone, of Porter, lives near the beach. “Always respect the lake,” she warned. “I’ve always known my boundaries and my limits.”

Her children, ages 3 and 2, have taken infant swimming lessons.

Flip, float, follow

Benjamin, with the Great Lakes Rescue Project, spoke to the Kiwanis-sponsored Aktion Club at Opportunity Enterprises on Thursday.

“We now teach babies how to float before they learn to swim,” he said. “Floating is the most important water skill you can have.”

The OE clients knew what to do if their clothes catch fire – stop, drop and roll. That’s drilled into children. Fire drills are common at schools. So are tornado and active shooter drills. Some schools in Illinois and Indiana even do earthquake drills.

“There hasn’t been a fatal earthquake in my lifetime, but earthquake drills get more priority than water safety,” he said.

“Nobody plays in fire, but everyone knows a fire strategy like stop, drop and roll,” he said.

Millions of people play in the water, but do they know the water safety mantra? It’s flip, float, follow.

His organization promotes water safety and tracks drownings in the Great Lakes. Since 2010, there have been 1,268 drownings in the Great Lakes. In Lake Michigan alone this year, there have been 10 drownings.

Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project Executive Director Dave Benjamin shows what a life ring looks like to members of the Aktion Club members at Opportunity Enterprises in Valparaiso on Thursday, June 27, 2024. (Doug Ross/for Post-Tribune)

The statistics are useful in knowing who’s more likely to drown. Benjamin said 80% of drowning victims are male. They’re more likely to take risks and to overestimate their abilities, he said.

Beachgoers should look for flags at the beach. Green means be careful even though waves are small. Yellow means be cautious because waves are higher. Red means stay out of the water.

Know the wind, too. A wind that blows toward the lake can quickly push you further from shore, especially if you’re on a floating object.

“Swimmers should stay with friends,” he said. That’s especially important because unless what you see in movies, drowning doesn’t involve a lot of arms waving and yelling for help. “Drowning is exhausting, and a person is gasping for air,” Benjamin said, so they can’t yell.

A person in the water, actively drowning, typically has their head tilted back, he said. “They need something that floats immediately. We need to toss them something that floats.”

Benjamin wants would-be rescuers to remember this advice: Reach, throw, don’t go.

He showed a video of surfers rescuing a swimmer in Grand Haven, Michigan. “These surfers, they know how to surf the waves, study the waves, they know how to use waves to their advantage.” The wet suit helps them float to the surface, too.

Benjamin spent an hour surfing at Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk Thursday afternoon before his speaking engagement at Opportunity Enterprises in Valparaiso.

Thirteen years ago, he said, he had a bad wipeout while surfing. “The waves pushed me to the bottom, and I immediately panicked,” Benjamin said. He was 40 years old.

“Knowing how to swim is just knowing how to swim,” he said. It isn’t knowing how to survive.

Flip onto your back, float to save your energy, follow directions from your rescuers.

Flip, float, follow.

Is A Quiet Place: Day One OK for Tweens? What to Know Before Bringing the Family to the PG-13 Thriller

The new film is rated PG-13 for "terror and violent content/bloody images"

yacht a porter

Gareth Gatrell/Paramount Pictures

Is the latest A Quiet Place film suitable for tweens brave enough to see the horror-thriller?

Lupita Nyong'o stars in the new spinoff A Quiet Place: Day One , which tracks the first day of an alien invasion. Creatures that hunt by sound take over New York City in the film, which is full of jump scares and looming death.

The film is rated PG-13 for "terror and violent content/bloody images."

For comparison, the 2018 original, which starred Emily Blunt and John Krasinski , was PG-13 for "terror and some bloody images," and its 2020 sequel was the same rating, but for "terror, violence and bloody/disturbing images."

A Quiet Place: Day One writer-director Michael Sarnoski told PEOPLE at the New York City premiere that whether children can see the film "depends" on the person. "As a kid, I would've watched a movie like this, but it's pretty scary in some spots."

"If your kid is good with scares, go for it," he added. "There's a lot of heart. There's an adorable cat, but there's some freaky monsters in it and some pretty scary stuff. I would say 10 and older? I don't know."

Read on for what to know before bringing children to A Quiet Place: Day One , in theaters now. (Warning: The following contains spoilers for the film.)

Paramount Pictures

There are lots of violent monsters on the loose

While the previous two films may have left more to the imagination, the creatures are shown onscreen much more frequently and up close in Day One (partially thanks to a bigger budget). Some scenes show swarms of the aliens running along the New York City setting and attacking civilians trying to hide or get away.

Director Sarnoski told IndieWire , “I liked in the early movies that they didn’t overshow them. One of the scariest things about these creatures is this whole ‘you make a sound, you die.’ There is something simple and fundamental about that that everyone can relate to."

"I didn’t want to overshare to the point where they just became these scary, clawy creatures," he continued, "but at the same time we wanted to hit that scope and scale of this is a large invasion, and there are herds of these things in this very loud city. ... [We] started by not showing too much and by the end, you build up to it being a little more in your face."

A cat is shown in peril

While children were often in danger (or killed) by the creatures in the previous Quiet Place films, this spinoff focuses mostly on adults. However, the cat owned by main character Sam (Nyong'o), named Frodo and played by two cats called Schnitzel and Nico, is occasionally in danger.

The cat does miraculously survive the film unscathed, though.

There are plenty of noisy jump scares

Many of the frights play with the idea of sound and silence, since the aliens hunt based on noise. This adds to the suspense and leads to very loud, startling jump scares that could be too much for some young children to handle.

There are themes of death and cancer

Not only is the lead character, a poet named Sam (Nyong'o), fighting to stay alive during the apocalyptic alien-invasion scenario, but she is also battling terminal cancer.

At the start of the film, she is shown in hospice care, and once she becomes stranded in Manhattan during the invasion, she is desperate to find medication and knows she's running out of time.

Spoilers: In the film's climax, Sam plans to sacrifice herself so her friend Eric ( Joseph Quinn ) can make it to a getaway boat with her cat Frodo and survive. He is able to make it to safety, and Sam too manages to live. Then, she enjoys some music before attracting the monsters with noise to find her.

Nyong'o told PEOPLE about the ending, "I loved that she was given agency up until the end, and that she went out on her own terms. I think that it was a very risky story that Michael Sarnoski chose to tell. It just shows that even when life is slipping, there is still more life to live, until there's not."

Yemen’s Houthis undeterred by U.S. campaign to halt Red Sea attacks

Recent attacks by Houthi fighters on commercial ships in the Red Sea have underscored the group’s ability to pose a sustained threat.

DUBAI — Despite months of U.S.-led airstrikes against Yemen’s Houthi fighters, the once ragtag rebels have continued to threaten some of the world’s most vital shipping routes, drawing from an arsenal of increasingly advanced weapons to attack vessels in and around the Red Sea.

Just this month, Houthi militants sank one ship and set another ablaze. The fighters, operating on land and in the water, have launched swarms of drones at U.S. warships and deployed a remote-controlled boat packed with explosives, tactics and weapons that experts say are associated with the group’s patron, Iran.

The recent uptick in Houthi activity has underscored the group’s ability to pose a sustained threat, relying in part on a steady flow of Iranian arms and expertise both to withstand U.S. strikes and remain on the attack. The faltering U.S. efforts to halt Houthi operations and protect global shipping have also drawn scrutiny from Congress, where lawmakers say not enough is being done to establish deterrence.

“Their ability to replace whatever we destroy is unimpeded and our ability to interdict materiel coming into the country negligible,” said Gerald Feierstein, a former U.S. ambassador to Yemen who is now a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute in Washington.

For years, Iran has circumvented a United Nations arms embargo against Yemen, covertly sending weapons and equipment from Iranian ports to the Arabian Sea, or overland from neighboring Oman. The Houthis have also learned how to modify old weapons and manufacture new ones, becoming the first group to use anti-ship ballistic missiles to strike naval targets , according to senior U.S. military commanders.

The new work etiquette: If you can’t spot the jerk, it might be you

The Houthi movement, whose leaders represent a minority Shiite sect in northern Yemen, first emerged in the 1990s and later seized the capital, Sanaa, amid the chaos of the Arab Spring in 2014. They fought a bruising war with Saudi Arabia, which wanted to eliminate an Iranian proxy on its border, but ultimately stayed in power and expanded the amount of territory they control.

Experts estimate that the group has a fighting force of at least 20,000, including a mix of tribal forces and troops formerly loyal to the government.

In November, after war broke out between Israel and Hamas , the Houthis announced they would begin attacking Israeli-linked ships in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. Their first major salvo included hijacking a cargo vessel in the southern Red Sea and detaining its crew.

Since then, the Pentagon has recorded more than 190 attacks on either U.S. military vessels or commercial shipping off the coast of Yemen, including nearly 100 since waves of U.S. airstrikes began in January.

The Houthis have sunk two ships, including the Rubymar in March and the Greek-owned Tutor coal carrier that was hit in the stern last week by an explosives-filled surface vessel. Also in March, an anti-ship ballistic missile fired by the Houthis set the Barbados-flagged True Confidence on fire, killing three people .

The operations soon broadened to the Gulf of Aden and Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which connects the Indian Ocean to the Red Sea. From there, ships transit through the Suez Canal to the Mediterranean, the shortest maritime route between Europe and Asia.

But the security threats have cratered Red Sea shipping traffic, and by the end of March, the volume of traffic through the Suez Canal and Bab el-Mandeb Strait had dropped by half, according to the World Bank.

The Houthis “will continue to understand that there’s a price to be paid” for harming maritime trade in the region, a Pentagon spokesman, Maj. Gen. Patrick Ryder, told reporters Tuesday, calling the attacks “unacceptable.”

The Pentagon has deployed a rotating cast of warships in the region in an effort to thwart the Houthi threat, shooting down drones over the Red Sea and other waterways and striking missiles and radar sites in Yemen.

The effort has included an aircraft carrier, the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, and the destroyers and other warships deployed with it. The Eisenhower deployed in October and has seen its mission extended twice by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, as the Pentagon prioritizes keeping firepower in the Middle East.

On Saturday, U.S. Central Command said the Eisenhower carrier strike group was returning home, after it “protected freedom of navigation throughout the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.” The statement said the USS Theodore, after completing a scheduled exercise in the Indo-Pacific, was deploying to the region.

But Republican lawmakers, some of whom are pushing for a dramatic surge in Pentagon spending in the year ahead, have accused the Biden administration of underinvesting in the advanced weapons and surveillance technology they now say are necessary for the fight.

“We just simply don’t have the political will to go after them,” Sen. Mike Rounds (R-S.D.), who sits on the Senate intelligence and armed services committees, said in an interview Tuesday.

He attributed the rise in Houthi attacks to “resources that are being directed to them by Iran,” as well as “enhanced technology that has made their systems more accurate.”

“Each of the different system types has their own capability,” said Rounds, who declined to comment on specific weaponry. “I don’t want to get into what it is that’s the most significant, but it’s more advanced than what they had to begin with,” he said.

The administration in March said that it was expanding efforts to intercept Iranian weapons being smuggled to Yemen. And on Monday, the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control said it was targeting with sanctions several individuals and entities involved in weapons procurement for the Houthis.

Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) said that the U.S. naval destroyers and aircraft carrier battle groups in the region have been “rather successful” at disrupting attacks. U.S. forces, he said, have “expended a lot of munitions in order to protect shipping.”

“But if we don’t protect that shipping, we’re going to see increased supply chain problems,” Kelly, a Navy veteran who serves on the Senate Armed Services Committee, said in an interview Tuesday.

He said he had just reviewed classified intelligence on the issue and could not comment in detail on efforts to disrupt Iranian weapons shipments to the Houthis. But he acknowledged that the Houthis were continuing to acquire advanced weaponry from Iran.

“I think as they get munitions from the Iranians that they feel it’s in their best interest to use them in disruption in the Red Sea,” Kelly said.

For the Houthis, the relative success of their Red Sea campaign has given them the flexibility to more easily maneuver in the region and at home.

“This is an attempt to demonstrate that the Houthis are a serious regional actor,” said Hannah Porter, a Yemen researcher with ARK Group, a U.K.-based international development organization. After engaging in direct combat with the U.S. military, Porter said the Houthis “can now portray themselves as a power player,” and use that to tighten their grip domestically or in ongoing peace talks with Saudi Arabia.

On the ground in Yemen, that work is already underway. Images from the conflict — including video of the November hijacking and missile strikes on other vessels — are used by the Houthis to both drive recruiting campaigns and crack down on dissent, according to researchers and local media reports. Houthi media outlets have reported that tens of thousands of additional fighters have joined their ranks since the Red Sea attacks began.

“The Houthis are very good at seizing opportunities to assert themselves,” said Nadwa al-Dawsari, a Yemeni researcher now based in the United States with the Middle East Institute. “And in this case, they are using the Red Sea attacks to gear up for escalation in Yemen.”

Earlier this month, the Houthis launched a widening crackdown abducting aid workers with the United Nations and the Washington-based National Democratic Institute.

Dawsari said the arrests are aimed at extinguishing the small pockets of dissent that remain in Houthi-controlled Yemen. “These voices have been suppressed, but now the Houthis want to eliminate them completely,” she said.

Lamothe and Hauslohner reported from Washington.

T he mega yacht reportedly owned by "Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling recently made a few stops at U.S. ports, causing local buzz along the way.

The writer's yacht, a vessel called the Samsara, was first spotted earlier this month off the coast of St. Augustine, Florida , according to Fits News. It then docked in Savannah, Georgia, until June 8, before making its way up the coast to Charleston Harbor, South Carolina.

It is unclear whether Rowling was onboard the super yacht during its travels to the Southern states. FOX Business has reached out to the author's publicist for further details.

According to Superyachtfan.com, the Samara is 290 feet long and was built in 2015 by Oceanco. The vessel has seven cabins for holding up to 14 guests, along with another 13 cabins for housing up to 27 crew members.

Recreation areas, trails near Lake Monroe closed due to storm damage

yacht a porter

Tuesday's storms that left a huge section of Monroe County without electricity and with downed trees and power lines affected areas near Lake Monroe, which may interfere with weekend and July Fourth holiday plans.

Downed trees and limbs cover the Paynetown State Recreation Area campground, shown here on June 26, 2024. Storms with straight-line winds tore through the area on June 25, 2024. The state recreation area is closed until at least July 2, 2024, according to state Department of Natural Resources officials.

Paynetown and Fairfax state recreation areas

Paynetown and Fairfax state recreation areas at Lake Monroe are currently closed with only restricted access, according to Jill Vance, interpretive naturalist. On Thursday, there was no electricity at any of the state properties at the lake. Power may not be restored until next week.

At Paynetown, visitors will be allowed to enter the property only to launch at the boat ramp, rent a boat from Lake Monroe Boat Rental , access a boat docked at the marina or retrieve personal property from a campsite. Vance said no one will be allowed to use the beach or any other part of the area while there.

"The big thing is we have a lot of tree damage," she said Thursday afternoon, adding that there are hundreds of broken branches called "widow makers" dropping from trees, causing problems for workers clearing the debris. "We don't want people coming into those areas that don't have a good reason to be there."

Vance hopes the campground will be able to reopen Tuesday, July 2. People with reservations will be contacted by the reservation system with more information. Before that happens, Vance said DNR staff are cutting downed trees and moving debris to huge piles.

Paynetown facilities including the beach, beach house, marina gas sales, modern restrooms, comfort stations, activity center and hiking trails may be closed for a longer time.

"It's a disaster zone on the trails right now," Vance said. With the priority to reopen Paynetown campgrounds, clearing trails will take longer.

The Fairfax recreation area didn't have as much storm damage. The property is open for use by boaters and picnickers, but the beach, beach house and trails are closed.

While all eight DNR boat ramps remain open there is no fuel available on the lake, so boaters must purchase fuel elsewhere. Anyone who has a boat at a private marina should contact that marina. Anyone who has a boat rental reservation for Thursday, June 27, through Sunday, June 30, should contact the rental company.

People who have a reservation at the Fourwinds Lakeside Inn should contact them as well.

Vance said anyone visiting Lake Monroe needs to be aware of downed trees, debris and the possibility of falling branches. She cautions boaters to be aware there will be more debris floating and submerged in the lake.

People with questions can call the DNR office at 812-837-9546 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Hoosier National Forest and Hardin Ridge Recreation Area

On Thursday, crews were still out on Hoosier National Forest land near the lake assessing damage, spokesman Marion Mason said. All Forest Service sites and roads are open, but visitors should expect to encounter fallen trees on trails for several weeks. Mason cautioned that people visiting the national forest be aware that trees and limbs may continue to fall.

BA Services, which manages the Hardin Ridge Recreation Area on the south side of the lake, is assessing campsites. They will notify anyone with reservations "very soon," Mason said, if cancellations are necessary.

While the Lake Monroe area is a popular destination, Mason said there are other trails and recreation areas in the Hoosier National Forest farther south that are open and had no storm damage. To find out more about those areas, go online to www.fs.usda.gove/Hoosier . For more information, call the Bedford office at 812-275-5987.

Amy Weingartner Branigin Peninsula Preserve

Sycamore Land Trust announced Wednesday the Amy Weingartner Branigin Peninsula Preserve along the north shore of Lake Monroe is temporarily closed. The preserve had significant storm damage, with downed trees and debris that made the trail unsafe for hiking. For updates, go to the Sycamore Land Trust website at https://sycamorelandtrust.org .

John Lawrence, executive director, said he doesn't expect the preserve to open before July 4. The connector trail leading to the peninsula is blocked by fallen trees and the old road farther along the trail has multiple trees down.

The land trust's Porter West property also was hit by the storm, Lawrence said. Although that property remains open, anyone hiking the trails should be aware of downed trees and the possibility of falling branches.

With summer getting underway on the East Coast, I'm thinking—as always!—about casual elegance , which I'm finding in beachy anoraks, lightweight knits, long, lean denim, and leather sandals . I also find myself drawn to hero accessories as the weather gets warmer. Summer is all about dressing simply and letting a beautiful watch or a new pair of sunglasses do the talking.

I tend to build my wardrobe around a solid mix of staple and statement pieces. So no matter what time of year it is, I’m thinking about everyday, seasonally-agnostic hits— a great pair of jeans , a trusted office-to-airport tote—and more situation-specific fare, like a summer wedding-ready necktie or color-blocked satin Bermuda shorts. Ask any virtuosic conductor: The key is knowing when to let each one sing.

The first secret to looking really cool when it’s really hot? Embrace the sweat: it’s inevitable, and everyone looks better—younger, sexier, happier —with a thin glaze of hard-earned dewiness. The second secret: figure out how to do more with less. Chasing the louche elegance of ‘80s-era Armani ? Tuck a breezy linen work shirt into pavement-skimming silk trousers—and nix the boots for barely-there sandals. Yearning to conjure the sun-kissed ease of ‘90s-era J.Crew ? Try a faded polo and thrashed jeans, anchored by rich-dad boat shoes. Both of those references are on my mood board right now, and I’ll be living in variations on the theme all summer long.

Who Is Jaylen Brown’s Girlfriend? Celtics MVP Shares Exclusive Photo of WNBA Star Kysre Gondrezick, Sparks Dating Rumors

Reigning NBA Finals MVP Jaylen Brown seems to be moving in on WNBA star Kysre Gondrezick of the Chicago Sky — at least, that’s what many fans believe.

On June 21, the Boston Celtics celebrated winning their 18th NBA championship with a signature duck boat parade. Thousands of fans gathered to cheer on Jayson Tatum, Kristaps Porzingas, and, of course, Finals MVP Jaylen Brown. However, many fans could not help but notice that Chicago Sky shooting guard Kysre Gondrezick was spotted seated in close proximity to Brown in the duck boat.

It didn’t take long for relationship rumors to begin flying.

“Now, wait a minute… Jaylen Brown got an NBA title, Finals MVP, and Kysre Gondrezick? Man is winning,” a fan tweeted .

“I know that’s not Kysre,” a shocked fan wrote on social media . “Jaylen Brown is having a generational year. I can’t even hate.”

Whispers of a romance between the two ballers continued later in the day. Once the festivities ended, Brown posted a photo of Kysre holding his MVP trophy on Instagram Stories.

When Brown shared the flick, some fans couldn’t help but take jabs at former NBA player Kevin Porter Jr.

Kysre and Porter Jr., who played for the Houston Rockets, were a couple before splitting due to accusations of domestic violence in September 2023. Porter Jr. was accused of striking Kysre  “multiple times about the body” and placing his hands around her neck after returning to their Millenium Hilton New York Hotel room and finding the door locked on Sept. 11. Police were called, and Kysre was taken to the hospital with bruising, at least one broken bone, and what was reported as a fractured neck vertebra.

Initially, Kysre denied the claims of abuse, claiming the injury reports were exaggerated, and declined to work with the DA. However, in January 2024, Porter Jr. accepted a deal, pleading guilty to misdemeanor reckless assault and second-degree harassment charges. Upon completing a 26-week counseling program, abiding by a restraining order, and staying out of trouble for a year, he would be able to withdraw his plea to the assault charge.

“JB stole KPJ’s girl, making 300 mil, and just won both ECF MVP/Finals MVP… bro is living the dream life,” one fan wrote on X .

Jaylen Brown posted Kysre with his Finals MVP trophy on his IG 😭 they locked in 🥺 pic.twitter.com/F0ndRXcOMp — LANI ❦ (@___lovelani) June 22, 2024

“Dam Kevin Porter Jr. messed up bad I know he see his ex Kysre Gondrezick on the float going viral,” someone else said .

“Kevin porter playing for 10k overseas while Kysre is on Jaylen Vrown championship parade boat fresh off a finals mvp and 300 million contract lmao he’s punching the air rn,” a third fan tweeted .

Brown has been considerably low-key when it comes to his personal life over the years. However, it’s been rumored that he has previously dated Bernice Burgos and singer H.E.R. Brown nor Gondrezick have gone on record to confirm their presumed relationship.

Porter Jr. has not appeared in an NBA game since 2023. He spent the 2024 season playing in the Greek Basketball League.

J Boats Inc Porter Five Forces Analysis

Posted by Zander Henry on Aug-22-2018

Porter Five (5) Forces Model

Porter Five (5) Forces Model was proposed by Michael E. Porter in 1979. The purpose was to assess and evaluate the competitive positioning and strengths of business organisations. The model has three horizontal competitive forces (Threat of Substitute Products or services, the threat of new entrants and rivalry among existing firms) and two vertical forces (Bargaining power of buyers and bargaining power of suppliers).

These forces shape the competition within any industry. The overall industry competitiveness declines when these forces reduce profitability. Porter found SWOT analysis lacking in rigour. Many new companies use the Porter Five (5) Forces Model to decide whether it is profitable to enter in a particular industry.

Here is the pictorial presentation of the Porter Five (5) Forces Model:

J Boats Inc Porter Five (5) Forces Analysis

Application of this model can help J Boats Inc to determine the industry attractiveness and understand its competitive positioning in the market. The analysis can also be used to make some strategically wise decisions that could improve the performance of J Boats Inc and ensure long-term survival.

Threats of new entrants

Threat of new entrants reflects how new market players impose threats to the existing market players. If the industry will be profitable and barriers to enter the industry will be low, it will attract more players and hence, the threat of new entrants. will be high.

Here are some factors that reduce the threat of new entrants for J Boats Inc:

  • Entry in the industry requires substantial capital and resource investment. This force also loses the strength if product differentiation is high and customers place high importance to the unique experience.
  • J Boats Inc will face the low threat of new entrants if existing regulatory framework imposes certain challenges to the new firms interested to enter in the market. In this case, new players will be required to fulfil strict, time consuming regulatory requirements, which may discourage some players from entering the market.
  • The threat will be low if psychological switching cost for consumers is high and existing brands have established a loyal customer base.
  • New entrants will be discouraged if access to the distribution channels is restricted.

J Boats Inc will be facing high new entrants threat if

  • Existing regulations support the entry of new players.
  • Consumers can easily switch the brands due to weak/no brand loyalty.
  • Initial capital investment is high.
  • Building a distribution network is easy for new players.
  • Retaliation from the existing market players is not a discouraging factor.

How J Boats Inc can tackle the Threat of New Entrants?

  • J Boats Inc can develop brand loyalty by working on customer relationship management. It will raise psychological switching costs.
  • It can develop long-term contractual relationships with distributors to widen access to the target market.
  • J Boats Inc can also an investment in research and development activities, get valuable customer data and introduce innovative products/services to set strong differentiation basis.

Threat of Substitute Products or services

The availability of substitute products or services makes the competitive environment challenging for J Boats Inc and other existing players. High substitute threat shows that customers can use alternative products/services from other industries to meet their needs. Various factors determine the intensity of this threat for J Boats Inc

The Threat of Substitute Products or services increases when;

  • A cheaper substitute product/service is available from another industry
  • The psychological switching costs of moving from industry to substitute products are low.
  • Substitute product offers the same or even superior quality and performance as offered by J Boats Inc’s product.

However, this threat is substantially low for J Boats Inc when;

  • The switching cost of using the substitute product is high (due to high psychological costs or higher economic costs)
  • Customers cannot derive the same utility (in terms of quality and performance) from substitute product as they derive from the J Boats Inc’s product.

How J Boats Inc can tackle the Threat of Substitute Products or services?

  • J Boats Inc can reduce the Threat of Substitute Products or services by clearly emphasising how its offered product/service is better than the available substitutes.
  • It should provide convincing reasons to the customers by offering a better experience and high value for money.
  • It can raise switching costs by working on loyalty.
  • Lastly, it can improve the quality, maximise value for money and set strong differentiation basis to discourage customers from using the substitute product.

Rivalry among existing firms

The Rivalry among existing firms shows the number of competitors that give tough competition to the J Boats Inc High rivalry shows J Boats Inc can face strong pressure from the rival firms, which can limit each other’s growth potential. Profitability in such industries is low as firms adopt aggressive targeting and pricing strategies against each other.

The Rivalry among existing firms will be low for J Boats Inc if;

  • There are only a limited number of players in the market
  • The industry is growing at a fast rate
  • There is a clear market leader
  • The products are highly differentiated, and each market player targets different sub-segments
  • The economic/psychological switching costs for consumers are high.
  • The exit barriers are low, which means firms can easily leave the industry without incurring huge losses.

Similarly, there are some factors that increase the Rivalry among existing firms for J Boats Inc For example, the company will face intense Rivalry among existing firms if market players are strategically diverse and target the same market. The rivalry will also be intense if customers are not loyal with existing brands and it is easier to attract others’ customers due to low switching costs. Competitors with equal size and offering undifferentiated products with slow industry growth tend to adopt aggressive strategies against each other. These all factors make the Rivalry among existing firms a major strategic concern for J Boats Inc

How J Boats Inc can tackle the Rivalry among existing firms?

J Boats Inc should focus on the implicit needs and expectations of its customers to strengthen the differentiation basis. It should raise switching costs by developing long-term customer relationships. The organisation should also invest in research and development activities to identify new customer segments. In some cases, collaborating with competitors can be mutually beneficial. The organisation can look for this option as well.

Bargaining Power of Suppliers

Bargaining power of suppliers in the Porter 5 force model reflects the pressure exerted by suppliers on business organisations by adopting different tactics like reducing the product availability, reducing the quality or increasing the prices. When suppliers have strong bargaining power, it costs the buyers- (business organisations). Moreover, high supplier bargaining power can increase the competition in the industry and lower the profit and growth potential for J Boats Inc Similarly, weak supplier power can make the industry more attractive due to high profitability and growth potential.

Bargaining power of suppliers will be high for J Boats Inc if:

  • Suppliers have concentrated into a specific region, and their concentration is higher than their buyers.
  • This force is particularly strong when the cost to switch from one supplier to other is high for buyers (for example, due to contractual relationships).
  • When suppliers are few and demand for their offered product is high, it strengthens the suppliers’ position against J Boats Inc
  • Suppliers’ forward integration weakens the J Boats Inc’s position as they also become the competitors in that area.
  • If J Boats Inc is not well educated, does not have adequate market knowledge and lacks the price sensitivity, it automatically strengthens the suppliers' position against the organisation.
  • Other factors that increase the suppliers’ bargaining power include-high product differentiation offered by suppliers, J Boats Inc making only a small proportion of suppliers’ overall sales and unavailability of the substitute products.

Contrarily, the bargaining power of suppliers will be low for J Boats Inc if:

  • Suppliers are not concentrated
  • Switching costs are low
  • Product lacks differentiation
  • Substitute products are available
  • J Boats Inc is highly price sensitive and has adequate market knowledge
  • There is no threat of forward integration by suppliers.

How J Boats Inc can tackle the Bargaining Power of Suppliers?

J Boats Inc can strengthen its position against suppliers by decreasing the dependency on one or a few suppliers. It will increase its price sensitivity. Developing the long-term contractual relationships with suppliers from different regions not only lowers their bargaining power but also allows J Boats Inc to improve its supply chain efficiency. Finally, J Boats Inc can find the alternate ways of producing the product if product demand is high enough and the firm has required competencies and expertise. However, it requires detailed cost-benefit analysis to determine its feasibility. Product redesign and diversification of the product lines can also help the organisation reduce the suppliers’ power in the market.

Bargaining Power of Buyers

Bargaining power of buyers indicates the pressure that customers exert on the business organisations to get high quality products at affordable prices with excellent customer service. This force directly influences the J Boats Inc’s ability to accomplish the business objectives. Strong bargaining power lowers profitability and makes the industry more competitive. Whereas, when buyer power is weak, it makes the industry less competitive and increase the profitability and growth opportunities for J Boats Inc

There are some factors that increase the bargaining power of buyers:

  • A more concentrated customer base increases their bargaining power against J Boats Inc
  • Buyer power will also be high if there are few in number whereas a number of sellers (business organisations) are too many.
  • Low switching costs (economic and psychological) also increase the buyers’ bargaining power.
  • In case of corporate customers, their ability to do backward integration strengthen their position in the market. Backward integration shows the buyers' ability to produce the products themselves instead of purchasing them from J Boats Inc
  • Consumers’ price sensitivity, high market knowledge and purchasing standardised products in large volumes also increase the buyers' bargaining power.

Some factors that decrease the bargaining power of buyers include lower customer concentration (means the customer base is geographically dispersed), customers’ inability to integrate backwards, low price sensitivity, lower market knowledge, high switching costs and purchasing customised products in small volumes.

How J Boats Inc can tackle the Bargaining Power of Buyers?

J Boats Inc can manage the bargaining power of buyers by increasing and diversifying their customer base. It can be done by introducing new products, targeting new market segments and adopting the product diversification strategies. Marketing and promotional strategies can also be helpful in this regard. Building loyalty by embedding innovation and offering excellent customer experience can raise the switching costs, which will ultimately reduce their bargaining power. J Boats Inc can adopt these strategies to strengthen its competitive positioning in the market.

Porter 5 force model implications

The application of Porter five (5) forces model in real-world context allows organisations to .make wise strategic decisions. Impact and importance of each of the five forces is context dependent. By using Five Force analysis, J Boats Inc can determine the industry attractiveness, make effective entry/exit decisions and assess the influence of these forces on their own business and competitors. Moreover, the dynamic analysis of this model can reveal important information. For example, J Boats Inc can combine the Porter 5 force model with PESTEL framework to determine the industry’s potential future attractiveness. In some cases, companies do not have the required information to analyse five forces. In such a scenario, the analysis can be conducted with the help of assumptions. Mostly, consultants consider this model as a starting point, and other frameworks (like PESTEL and Value Chain) are used in conjunction for a better understanding of the external environment.

ILYA Honors Vincent Porter

On February 9, at the Winter Inland meetings in Hartland, Wisconsin, the Inland Lake Yachting Association awarded its Edmund Pillsbury Memorial Cup to Vincent Porter in recognition of his big win in Class E at the 2012 ILYA Annual Regatta on Lake Mendota last August. Vincent Porter, with crew Clifford Porter, Coye Harrett, and Griffin Rolander, compiled an impressive 1-8-5-4-1-11 series at that regatta over a tough 42-boat fleet. Eight of the top ten finishers had previously won the ILYA Class E Championship title. In 1998, Vincent shared Pillsbury honors with his father and uncle for their victories at the Inland that year when Vincent won the Class X senior title, John won Class A, and Brian won Class E.

In 1952, Mr. and Mrs. John S. Pillsbury and their family donated the Pillsbury Memorial Cup in memory of Edmund Pillsbury, to be awarded to the skipper of the yacht, irrespective of class, with the outstanding record in the annual ILYA regatta. LGYC’s Bill Freytag, who won the Class C Championship at the 1952 Annual Regatta, was the first to receive the trophy. Since 1965, with the consent of the Pillsbury family, the ILYA has awarded the cup to the outstanding skipper at the Annual Regatta as determined by an anonymous committee of ILYA directors, appointed by the commodore.

LGYC’s Pillsbury Memorial Cup winners 1952 William H. Freytag Jr., Class C 1953 Jane Wiswell, Class C 1954 Jim Lund, Class D 1956 Buddy Melges, Class E 1957 Harry Melges Sr., Class A 1965 Buddy Melges, Class E 1974 Henry Bossett, Class M 1984 John Porter, Class A 1985 Harry Melges III, Classes E and C 1986 Harry Melges III, Class E 1988 Harry Melges III, Class E and C 1990 Jane Wiswell Pegel, Class M 1991 Brian Porter, Class E 1996 Iggy Labanauskas, Classes X and IOD 1998 John, Brian, and Vincent Porter, Classes A, E, and X 2010 Buddy Melges, Class A 2012 Vincent Porter, Class E
