Greek Seas Charter Sailing - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024)

A Beginner’s Guide To A Catamaran Charter In Greece

Ever thought about going on a catamaran charter greece is the perfect destination, a beginner’s guide to a catamaran charter in greece.

A catamaran charter in Greece is ideal for all sailing abilities, with areas of high winds and milder winds depending on the area of Greece. Greece is a great place to sail with hot and dry summers, and idyllic islands, beaches and beautiful villages waiting to be discovered.

A catamaran charter in Greece can be reached from anywhere in the world. Many of the islands have their airports along with the mainland airports depending on the area which you choose to sail in. Many of these airports have flights to other destinations in Europe, which connect the country to the rest of the world.

The weather in Greece is perfect for sailing with hot dry summers. The wind varies depending on the location in Greece. The sailing season in Greece begins in May and lasts until October.

The best time to go on a catamaran charter in Greece in May, June or September to avoid the crowds of people in the marinas and tourist hot spots. Although this being said, anytime throughout the summer is great just beware of the crowds.

Why Go On A Catamaran Charter In Greece?

Things to do on a catamaran charter in greece, when to book a catamaran charter in greece, what catamarans are available to charter, what are the benefits of chartering a catamaran, where can you sail.

Longest Coastline In The World. Greece has over 13,676km (8,498miles) of coastline making it the 11th longest coastline in the world. This coastline brings with it over 486 beaches which have been awarded Blue Flag for environmental management and high water quality, and an abundance of islands, 227 of which are inhabited.

Paradise. Greece is considered by many as ‘paradise’ with consistent trade winds, sunshine, and blue sky. A catamaran charter in Greece is perfect for every ability of sailor, with different areas having different wind conditions. The Aegean Sea (experienced sailors), Saronic Gulf, Sporades Islands, and the Ionian Sea have milder winds and safer bays, which are ideal of less confident sailors.

UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Aside from beautiful beaches, islands, and turquoise waters, Greece has 18 UNESCO World Heritage Sites to explore as well as fishing villages.

Places To Visit. On a catamaran charter in Greece, there are lots of things to see and do.

  • Zakynthos, Navagio Beach (Shipwreck Beach)
  • Milos Island, the distinctive white sandy beach with volcano rocks on Sarakiniko Beach
  • Crete, the pink sand and turquoise waters in Balos Beach and Lagoon
  • Santorini and Mykonos, two of the most photographed islands in Greece, picturesque villages and towns with whitewashed villages
  • Crete, protected area with sand lilies, pink sand, turtles nesting at Elafonissi Beach
  • The ancient ruins of Acropolis built in 510BC and Delphi a UNESCO site with Mount Parnassos

These are just a small number of the things you can explore and see in Greece, as well as the traditional sailing activities of swimming, snorkeling, diving or just watching the sunset with a cocktail on deck.

Best Time To Book. The best time to book a catamaran charter in Greece is anytime. If you wish to book a catamaran charter in Greece we have a fantastic team on hand to organize your perfect charter, as well as offering guidance on locations, itineraries, and skippers.

Lots Of Routes Possible. In Greece, we have a large number of boats available for charter. Greece is a big sailing destination, with lots of options, for itineraries and hundreds of marinas with boats available all over the country, depending on what itinerary you desire.

Boats Available. For a catamaran charter in Greece, the boats available are the following (this list depends and varies on the availability at the time of the request and what boats are available for your chosen dates)

  • Lagoon 380 S2, 560, 52, 450, 39, 42, 450 S and 400 S2
  • Bali 4.0, 4.5 or 4.3
  • Nautitech Open 40 and 441

Ample Space. A catamaran charter in Greece is perfect for families or large groups of friends. Catamarans have spacious areas perfect for socializing including an outside deck seating area and an inside saloon with 360-degree panoramic views, and natural light coming through the large windows. Catamarans can come in different cabin sizes, with cabins typically in the corners of the two hulls, one at each end. These cabins are joint together with spacious areas, but they offer privacy with the cabin separated from each other. Catamarans can also have room for crew members in cabins in the very front of the boat.

Shallow Draft . Catamaran charters in Greece are ideal for sailing in Greece as their shallow draft allows them to access coves, and anchor in shallow water, getting closer to the beaches.

Catamaran Charter Greece. On a catamaran charter in Greece, you can take whichever route you desire, depending on what you what to see and explore. Greece has lots of options for itineraries, depending on whether you want to visit islands, villages or cities.

Greece Sailing Itineraries. Each area of Greece has different wind activity and patterns, so it’s best to check which sailing area is suitable for your sailing abilities.

During the Coronavirus pandemic, Kate and her colleagues at Sailchecker have performed brilliantly. They have been considerate and highly efficient in re-organising our Turkey charter and also provided lots of assistance in getting our Yacht Security Deposit insurance policy transferred to match our revised charter dates.

Truly worthy of a 5 star rating!

Alan, R.

Booked my first charter to Croatia

Booked my first charter to Croatia, and Helm were extremely helpful with their knowledge and advice. They helped choose the write boat for our party and provided helpful information about the area we were sailing. The team on the ground ,Adriatic Sailing, were brilliant and could not have been more helpful. From Start to finish this trip was so smooth in all aspects. Highly recommend them for charter trips.

A Greek Sail of a Lifetime

This was a virtually flawless and amazing sail in the Greek islands. Congratulations to Helm and to Victoria, in particular, for helping us choose amongst the myriad options for a sail for our entire family and a couple of friends. They took the time to discuss the options and helped us choose a cruise in the Greek islands to include the Cyclades and Saronic Sea. The support from Helm was absolutely flawless and included very vigorous support given to one of our boat members who had misplaced part of a passport. This required urgent mailing and coordination, and Helm staff supported this. The entire crew was excellent. Captain Stavros knew the geography extremely well after decades of experience and could put us into private and gorgeous Bays free of wind as well as direct us to the best island hikes and occasional taverna or restaurant. The boat from Vernicos charters was olde, but beautiful and well appointed and cared for. The cook was amazing and we had stunning often three course meals throughout the day and week. The support from the Hostess, and the assistant sailor was also excellent. The value was really remarkable for our group of 10 people. All in all this was a flawless trip. It was a trip of a lifetime, though we are already trying to think about how we might do a similar trip again in the not too distant future. Could not recommend Helm, Vernice’s, and everybody on this trip more highly.

Zach Triay @ Helm

Zach Triay @ Helm Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined a more glorious trip! Amazing crew, brilliant Captain and Michelin level Chef! We’ve had perfect weather, swimming every day on private beaches with every water toy imaginable; Sea-Bobs, kayak, snorkeling, Paddleboard, etc., then onto the next island for history, culture, and fabulous little villages to explore…all carefully “scripted” by our knowledgeable, professional and deeply skilled Captain, Kostas Katsimentes! Our Chef crafted fresh Greek cuisine on a level none of us (including my cookbook publisher and foodie husband) had experienced, consistently meal after meal. We took as many pictures of the food as we did the vistas! Zach, this has been everything you promised and then some. I am forever indebted to you for making my birthday the most spectacular week of my life. And that is not an exaggeration. My friends (all first class world travelers) concur, this experience has been magnificent. I will be back next year, and every year after, on the this same sailboat and with this same experienced crew, to discover yet another sampling of Grecian islands! You are a man of your word and have enriched our lives! Thank you. Amy Glazer

Date of experience : May 31, 2024

Hi Amy, thanks so much for the glowing review! We are all so thrilled you had such an enjoyable charter, and Zach is especially happy you enjoyed yourself so much. We look forward to helping you plan your next adventure!

Zach at Helm.yt was great!

Working with Zach at Helm.yt was a great experience! 5 stars! He set us up with a great boat after back and forth several times as we figured out what we wanted. He was always friendly and generous with his time as our trip and itinerary changed shape during the planning process. He set us up with excellent recommendations, and took care of the logistics for us to have an awesome, memorable, and really special vacation. Definitely recommend and hope to work with them again!

Helm was a great company to deal with and made our first yacht charter an easy and enjoyable experience. Rhys was a great help and worked with us to find the best options for our holiday. He was knowledgeable about each. Good advice too!

Greece Island Hopping

We booked an impromptu trip to Greece for Spring Break and decided to stay an extra week to explore. After a Google search and dealing with other companies whose only options were three times the price, I was able to talk to Ed at HELM and they were able to find us an amazing boat for an amazing price. Being offseason, our options were limited but HELM was able to put a charter together that optimized our trip. We literally finalized the trip a week before we were to get on the boat. The provider was top notch and had a brand new boat. Skipper and Host went above and beyond and were grateful for their relationship with HELM. Already planning our next charter and will absolutely be working with Ed and HELM.

Date of experience : April 05, 2024

Thanks for the lovely review, Clayton! Ed and the team are delighted we were able to sort you out with a last-minute getaway and we can't wait to welcome you back for the next trip!

We enjoyed working with Helm

We enjoyed working with Helm! Libby worked very hard to find the right boat and trip for our group of 8 and patiently answered all of our questions. We met with Libby several times, and each time, she was prepared and professional. We would book with Libby at Helm again!

Date of experience : April 27, 2024

Thanks Margaret, Libby says it was a pleasure working with you to arrange your charter, and she's already excited about helping plan your next vacation!

We booked a weeks sailing in Greece…

We booked a weeks sailing in Greece with Helm Yachting, they were great to deal with, informative, very helpful and very very patient with me. I managed to book most things up front, skipper, host and pre order food and drink so I didn't have to carry lots of Euros to pay in cash on arrival. They used Octopus Yachting who were again very helpful and had no problems boarding the boat. We had the best skipper and host who looked after us beautifully and cooked us the most amazing food, our skipper even caught our dinner on one occasion, they also made me the most incredible birthday cake, recommended things to see and on each island and booked Taxi's to take us wait and return when we needed it. We ate in the best local restaurants along with our crew and found everyone absolutely lovely and great fun. The weather was up and down but we didn't care it was so relaxing we even made the most of the sand storm. Would highly recommend both Helm and Octopus along with our Skipper Nikos and our host Andreas.

Hi Lindsay, thanks for the kind review! Fleur is delighted you enjoyed your charter so much, and we all hope you had a memorable birthday! We're already looking forward to planning your next one :)

These guys know what they're doing!

Our yacht trip booked through Victoria was such a smooth ride and a great experience! We booked a one-week chartered yacht through Helm, and they were such a great broker. The concept is brilliant, in stead of contacting lots of different owners to figure out what we wanted to do, Helm had several prepared suggestions, knew where we could easily fly to, and guided us well through any questions that we had along the way. 10/10 recommend!

Date of experience : October 08, 2023

Thanks for the lovely review, Maria! Victoria is delighted you had a wonderful trip :)

Top Service and a quality yacht in beautiful Croatia!

Thank you to Helm for arranging our sailing holiday. In particular, thanks to Zach for the time he took to locate available yachts that suited our training certification and the dates we needed, as it was short notice! We hadn't sailed in Croatia before and had a fabulous time. We had all our queries answered on the lead up to our departure and got accurate information on the marina and contact details there. The yacht we hired was top quality for its age and overall great value for money. Everything was as promised!

Date of experience : September 09, 2023

Thanks for the kind review, Ray! Zach is delighted he was able to help make your charter happen at short notice and deliver exceptional value for you! :)

Saronic Gulf Charter

We contacted Helm to book a one week bare boat catamaran charter out of Athens in mid September. Our experience with Helm and their local agent FyLy in Athens was nothing short of excellent. We were given a superb deal on a brand new Astrea 42 which was the ideal boat for our party of 6 retired sailors. Helm made planning our trip to Greece very easy with full details on the boat, suggested itinerary and booking of transport from the airport to the Marina. Their agent gave us full support at Alimos marina and during our cruise around the Saronic Gulf. We would recommend Helm to anyone considering a bare boat charter in the Mediterranean

Date of experience : September 16, 2023

Thanks for the great review, Chris - it was a pleasure to arrange your Astrea 42 charter and we're delighted you had such an enjoyable time in the Saronic!

The whole team at HELM made our holiday…

The whole team at HELM made our holiday experience wonderful, taking away all the stresses and strains from us. Any queries about our holiday plans were quickly addressed. We couldn't ask for more and we look forward to using HELM's services again.

Date of experience : October 13, 2023

Thank you for the review and your very kind words. We're ready for your next charter as soon as you are!

Thank you Jack & thank you Helm!

Jack from Helm helped us find a boat & plan a trip with just 2 weeks till we departed! When I initially called and told him mid-august (it was end of july) he thought I was talking about the following year. No issue - Jack found us a beautiful 45 foot cat and we got paired with a wonderful skipper. Couldn't have been a better week in the adriatic. 10/10 would recommend.

Date of experience : August 13, 2023

Thanks for the great review, Hunter! Jack was delighted to find you such a good last-minute deal in Croatia and is excited to finalise your upcoming Caribbean trip.

Libby at the Helm was professional

Libby at the Helm was professional, attentive, and responsive. She made the experience of chartering a boat for the Greek islands seamless. From start to finish, she answered all questions and concerns and guided us on an AMAZING trip—the Valium 62 with Captain Stefano and his crew. Yianni and David super exceeded our expectations. Don’t hesitate to book a trip with HELM & Libby!

Date of experience : June 22, 2023

Thanks Georgia, we really appreciate the 5-star review :). Libby is delighted you had a great time on Valium 62, and is ready to help plan your next trip whenever you are!

catamaran charter - Greece cyclades

I chartered a catamaran though HELM for a Greek holiday. All arrangements worked as expected and we had a great holiday. All the staff I dealt with at HELM were very courteous and efficient. One point of feedback is there was little or no continuity as people left the business so a couple of things fell through the gaps, but were recovered without issue. I would use HELM again - thankyou!

Date of experience : September 23, 2023

Hi Ed, thank you for the kind words and nice review. We are reviewing our continuity processes to help make things as smooth as possible in future!

7 Day BVI charter

We just finished up a 7 day charter in the BVI's and could not have had a better time! We started planning this trip about a year ago and Helm charters was so helpful and patient with my many questions along the way. We loved our boat and the crew and highly recommend Helm for boat charters. We hope to plan another adventure with Helm in the future.

Date of experience : January 13, 2024

Thank you for the wonderful review, Lauren! Marcus is so glad he could help you plan your charter, and he looks forward to your next one already!

I do not recommend booking with Helm…

I do not recommend booking with Helm for a charter. The boat they reserved for us had a dinghy with an inoperable engine (we lost a full day of sailing because it had to be removed by a mechanic, repaired, and then reinstalled 8 hours later). Worse, the bilge clearly hadn’t been properly cleaned. The main cabin smelled like a public toilet after a music festival and the stench of human feces was absorbed by all of our clothing. Everywhere we went, we smelled like human waste. It was nauseating. Peter, one of the scam artists who run this company, refused to do anything meaningful to make this better. We spent over $12,000 to rent a partially inoperable public toilet with no customer service to support us.

Date of experience : August 01, 2023

Dear Jenna, As expressed to you, we were disappointed that you weren’t happy with your experience with Dream Yacht Charter, after booking a last minute charter on the Saona 47 Catamaran. We are confused as to how you think we as an agent defrauded you, when we booked exactly the boat we confirmed to you, further no complaint was made during your charter, it was only after the charter when you returned that you identified these issues to us. On receipt of these as a company we always responded promptly to you, and tried to negotiate on your behalf with Dream Yacht Charter, who were the principal responsible for your charter. We are sorry you didn’t agree with their offer of compensation, as I’m sure you can understand once the charter is over we are limited with what we can do. We always want our clients to be happy, and we pride ourselves on doing our best for our clients when things do go wrong, we are sorry this is not how you viewed our services. Warm regards, The HELM team

HELM were great

HELM were great. We dealt with Zach and Victoria who were helpful, responsive and knowledgeable. Next time we will go straight to HELM rather than considering multiple brokers.

Date of experience : September 30, 2023

Hi Al, thank you for the kind review - we are delighted that you found Zach and Victoria to be so helpful, and look forward to planning your future charters!

Aeolian Islands Family Day-HELM Sicily

I booked a day charter from Capo d'Orlando, Sicily to the Aeolian Islands. We swam around Lipari and Vulcano. If we had enough energy we could have zoomed off to Salina also. The crew of Aerre Sicily Charter, Captain Carlo and his Skipper Angelo were kind, social, and great hosts. We had fruit to snack on and for lunch we had enough food to feed at least 15 people, we were a party of 7. They could accommodate other requests with advanced notice. We probably used about 1/3rd of the vessel's gas, easy fill up with American Express. I would definitely book this charter again.

Date of experience : September 10, 2023

Hi Nicholas, thank you for the very kind review! We're so glad you had a lovely day charter and look forward to arranging your next trip!

“We had a great time in Greece”

We had a great time in Greece, the first three days we had constant 20-25knots of wind, so we were able to do a lot of sailing. The boat was also in good condition and everything in working order…the boat did however look a bit older than a 2018 mode…

Greece Yacht Charters

Greece is a country in Southeast Europe, which is located in the Balkans. The country is embossed in four seas: the Aegean Sea, the Ionian Sea, the Cretan Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea . Due to its advantageous location, Greece possesses one of the longest coastlines in the world. This outstanding feature makes the country an incredibly famous sailing destination. Beautiful golden beaches along the island, emerald transparent waters, pine forests in the mountains, and extremely pleasant weather will not leave any sailor indifferent. Deciding to charter a shining yacht, you make an investment in unforgettable memories and the desire to come back as a matter of course.

The reasons for which one must visit Greece are difficult to count as it has a lot to offer for everyone. Rich history, glorious past, impressive ancient buildings, delicious food and wine, an abundance of celebrations and festivals are waiting for you to explore the picturesque region. The pristine nature of Athens, Volos, Corfu, Kavala, and other Greek cities and perfect weather conditions create an ideal opportunity to rent a boat and melt into the pleasure.

Sailing Conditions in Greece

Being situated in Southeast Europe, Greece welcomes sailors from around the globe to feel all the benefits of the Mediterranean climate. Hot and dry summers with rare precipitation and clear skies provide a good opportunity for yacht rental without any fear of possible rains and extreme winds. The average temperature during the summer period never drops below 20 ºC even at night. It is impossible to miss such great weather and not to go far in the sea on your sailboat to enjoy the 30 ºC heat in the daytime. Greek winters are usually colder, especially in those areas that are close to mountains. But they are not lingering and not so cold to somehow disturb dedicated sailors. The sailing season usually starts in March and continues up to November, bringing different sailing conditions to the island.

Best Times for Vacation in Greece

Having an intention to make the most of your sailboat vacation in the breathtaking destination, it is necessary to get acquainted with the weather conditions of the desired period. As a rule, the peak season of sailing occurs in the summer months and up to the end of September . This time features extremely high air and water temperature and a huge number of sailors even in the remote marinas. By the way, Greek summers are an ideal time for those who are ready to forget about sleep and party the whole night. One of the most important things to consider is that in July, the northern wind Meltemi comes to the shore and creates many hazardous obstacles for sailing.

Spring and autumn wind speeds and summer conditions force you to choose this time period if you are looking for peace and quiet. There is no extreme heat and strong winds, as well as no abundance of people. You still can enjoy going bareboat without any unpleasant conditions and immerse yourself into the same active and loud festivals and celebrations.

Sailing Difficulty Level

Greece has already gained its high popularity as one of the world’s best sailing destinations . Because of its climate and location, the country represents great sailing options for beginners and professional sailors alike. The weather changes require sailors to explore the weather forecast beforehand to select the desired time for coming and know what to expect. The level of difficulty is mostly predetermined by the Meltemi wind of 6-8 force. Blowing from July to September may scary fresh sailors and even become a challenge for experienced professionals. If you are not highly skillful and just do not have enough confidence to manage the vessel by yourself, consider booking a boat in spring or autumn. The absence of powerful winds will not spoil your first sailing experience but contribute to positive impressions.

If you are still not ready to face the open water, 12 Knots is glad to provide you with the help of a qualified skipper and an opportunity to hire a crew . Being focused on the needs and desires of every sailor, we offer either a skipper to help to refresh the memories of handling a boat or a complete training process in our sailing school. Both options are delivered at their best quality and reasonable price.

Main Charter Bases

Greece is an incredibly important sailing destination for 12 Knots. Welcoming thousands of happy sailors every year, the country has a lot of well-equipped marinas and good mooring options. Depending on the desired part of the country, preferred city, and climate peculiarities, you may select a perfect one. The team of 12 Knots spreads their professional services on more than 30 bases along the coast. You may rent a yacht or boat at bases situated in the most famous Greek cities and islands:

  • Santorini  and many others

Boat Types for Charters

Having a great number of bases in possession, 12 Knots aims to provide sailors with powerful sailboats from leading manufacturers. Approximately 6,000 vessels are now available for charter in Greece. Sailing yachts, catamarans, powerboats, gulets, and houseboats are waiting for your booking. Do not hesitate and contact our team to become an owner of a white shining boat at a good cost. It is advisable to perform booking beforehand to avoid disappointment and misunderstanding.

Other Information about Greece Sailing

  • Greece is the Euro zone; that’s why the official currency is Euro.

Yacht Charters in Greece with Istion

Greece is quite simply the perfect sailing destination in Europe. Blessed with a mild southern Mediterranean climate with an extended summer giving a comfortable sailing season of close to eight months, our small country has over 13,000 kilometres of coastline to explore . That impressive number comes from the over 6000 islands and islets scattered like diamonds in the sea, each of them inviting you to swim for hours, socialise while tasting Greece’s well know cuisine and enjoy the beauty of a Greek summer spent next to the waves. Greece is truly a sailor’s paradise .

At Istion Yachting, we have been providing unforgettable sailing holidays in Greece for more than 30 years. From our humble beginnings on the island of Kos in 1992 we now offer charters throughout Greece from our 11 main charter bases. Our experienced skippers and crews, charter base staff, planning departments and every one of the wider Istion team is an expert in their field and is ready to assist you in planning the perfect sailing holiday in Greece . We look forwarded to welcoming you this summer!

There are so many options, and only so much time. The diversity of the different sailing areas in Greece makes picking just one difficult, which is why so many of our guests come back to sail again and again . There is always another beautiful island to visit and another idyllic beach to swim on!

Peak sailing season is from late June through August with hot weather, warm seas and busy islands. Availability can become limited during this period so booking early is essential.

Late spring from May to June and late summer from September to early October are often considered the best time to sail for experienced sailors and repeat visitors to our country. The weather is great and the islands are more relaxed than the busy summer months.

For those who want to live the real Greek way of life, April and October can be rewarding, with less heat, fewer visitors and enticing low-season offers . A few of the restaurants and shops on some islands may not have opened or may have closed for the season, but in our opinion early and late season sailing in Greece is a magical and unique experience .

The Argo Saronic Gulf is actually two gulfs (the Saronic and Argolic ) that are often referred to together in sailing terms given their close distances to each other. The Saronic Gulf lies in between Athens and the coast of the Argolid Peninsula while the Argolic Gulf is one hop over in between the peninsula and the first large leg of the Eastern Peloponnese , which runs all the way south to Monemvasia.

We often recommend this area to first time sailors for a number of practical reasons. First and foremost, it is the easiest area to reach from Athens , which makes it an ideal spot for those arriving via the Athens International Airport. Within a few hours of touching down you can be swimming and relaxing on board having reached your first destination.

Another advantage is that the area is well protected from the annual Meltemi winds that can blow strongly in July and August and may create challenging conditions for less experienced sailors.

The Argo Saronic Gulf also has plenty of places to visit on either a one or two-week holiday. One-week holidays will usually take in the nearby islands of Aigina and Poros before looping down to the coastal town of Ermioni and the cosmopolitan islands of Spetses and Hydra further south. A visit to Epidavros for a quick trip to its famous ancient theatre is not to be missed for the history buffs.

Two week holidays allow you to explore further east, with the coastal towns of Nafpleio, Leonidio and Kyparissi offering relaxed mooring while cruising the coast of the Eastern Peloponnese.

We invite you to learn more about our Athens charter base , download our sample one-week Saronic Gulf sailing itinerary for inspiration and contact us with any questions, we are here to help you plan your perfect sailing holiday.

Ah, the Cyclades. A name steeped in history that brings the classic image of a Greek island to everyone’s mind. While Greece has many island chains and all of them are unique and magical, the Cyclades has become nearly synonymous with the county as a whole for many visitors.

Characterised by their white houses, rugged landscapes and world famous beaches , the Cyclades attract visitors from around the world and are a must see for everyone at some point in their life. For sailors the area offers a huge variety of routes and islands to visit, from the world famous islands Mykonos and Santorini to the popular Paros and Naxos and many, many more in between.

A note about the Meltemi winds that blow from the north in July and August. In the Cyclades these winds can make for challenging conditions and sailing the area during these times is best for experienced sailors. Don’t despair all you beginner sailors! If you want a helping hand our skippers are the best in Greece and will be happy to take care of the sailing and navigation so you can enjoy the islands worry free.

The Cyclades are reached from our main base in Alimos Marina on the western side of Attica giving quick access to the islands of Kea, Kithnos, Serifos, Sifnos and Milos among others.

Our base in Lavrion is perfect for getting a head start to the islands of Andros, Tinos, Mykonos, Paros and Naxos . The Lavrion base is further south and on the east side of Attica, saving a couple of hours of additional sailing time on your way out. As an added bonus, Lavrion is just half an hour from the Athens International Airport so you can be on your way towards your destination just an hour or two after landing.

Located on the western side of Greece the seven main islands of the Ionian Sea have their own unique charm and character . The Ionian Islands are much greener than most islands in Greece, their location and geography bringing more rainfall during the winter months and allowing trees and shrubs to grow and thrive. The combining of colours between the green of the hills , the white of the sands and the blue of the sea are a special treat for visitors to this area.

Istion maintains three bases in the Ionian, on Corfu in the north and in Lefkas (or Lefkada) and nearby Preveza further south.

Itineraries starting from Corfu may include multiple stops along the Corfu coast, visits to the islands of Paxos and Antipaxos and visits to mainland ports including Parga and Syvota .

Trips starting from Lefkas or Preveza may head either north towards Corfu or South towards the islands of Kalamos and Kastos and then on to the mythical island of Ithaca and nearby Kefalonia . Note that our base in Preveza is just 10 minutes from the Aktion Airport where all charter flights to Lefkas arrive. If your flight times are tight, Preveza is a great option .

We recommend downloading our sample sailing itineraries for trips leaving from Corfu and from Lefkas or Preveza . If you need more recommendations for a truly unique voyage through to the Ionian just contact us , we will be happy to help.

The Dodecanese islands in the southeast Aegean are close to our heart. The central island of Kos is where Istion Yachting first started operations in 1992 .

The Dodecanese are known for their wonderful beaches and rich history ranging from the ancient to the medieval to the modern in a delightful kaleidoscope of sights and sounds . The area has relatively mild wind conditions that are perfect for sailing throughout the year and has plenty of sun and warmth during the summer months.

Istion now has two bases in the Dodecanese, our home base on Kos and another on the historic island of Rhodes . From Kos you may head north towards the islands of Kalimos, Leros and Patmos and if time permits all the way to amazing Ithaki and Fourni .

Heading south from Kos will put you on course to visit the islands north of Rhodes including Nisiros, Tilos and Symi . Setting sail from Rhodes itself also reaches these islands or you can choose to head west, exploring the coast of Rhodes and visiting the quaint island of Chalki and the beautiful islands of Karpathos and Kasos .

Charter flights from most European countries fly direct to both Kos and Rhodes making them a great starting point for your next Aegean adventure !

The Sporades are the hidden gem on the Greek sailing map . Nestled off the eastern coast of central Greece the main islands of Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos and Skyros are a beautiful combination of green mountains, sandy and pebble beaches and deep blue seas. Nature plays a staring role here, with the National Marine Park at Alonissos being a significant refuge for the Monachus Monachus or Mediterranean seal .

Sailing conditions in the Sporades are relatively mild, although winds can shift between the day and night requiring some care when mooring. Distances between islands are short allowing a lot of fun to be packed into a week long charter .

We have two charter bases servicing the Sporades, a base on the island of Skiathos where most European charter flights arrive and another on the mainland city of Volos . Volos is a convenient starting spot for guests arriving by road with their own vehicle and allows exploring of the lovely coastline of the Pagasetic Gulf and Pelion on your way out to the islands – highly recommended !

Bareboat Charters

Tailored for the seasoned sailor, bareboat charters hand the helm over to you, allowing complete freedom to navigate the Greek seas at your own pace . Your sailing party must have at least one licensed skipper and one experienced crew member at a minimum to be able to rent our yachts as bareboats.

If you have some sailing experience but do not hold a valid license then a bareboat charter is not (yet) for you and your best option is a skippered charter where our friendly captains will give you a helping hand. If you are an experienced sailor and have no concerns about the challenges of wind conditions, navigation and docking then we invite you to read more about our bareboat charters here and contact us with any questions you may have.

Skippered Charters

Our skippered charters are the perfect blend of guidance and freedom, designed for those who have some sailing experience, are eager to learn or just want to relax and let a professional do the hard work . With an Istion skipper at your side, you can enjoy the peace of mind that comes with their expert navigation and docking skills while still playing an active role in your sailing adventure.

It's an educational and exhilarating experience where you can hone your sailing skills, participate in manoeuvring the yacht, and even take the helm under the watchful eye of your skipper. It is an amazing experience for everyone and kids in particular have a great time learning about sailing and playing little captain for a week.

Our skippered charters always start off with a briefing between you and your skipper so you can learn about the area you are going to sail and the islands you may want to visit. Our skippers know the Greek seas inside out and based on your preferences they will suggest recommended itineraries to follow, which islands to visit and what hidden beaches to swim at.

If you are planning your first sailing holiday in Greece , you are in the very best hands with Istion's professional skippers by your side. Read more about our skippered charters here , or just get in touch to start planning your perfect sailing holiday in Greece.

Fully Crewed Charters

For those of you that want to indulge in the epitome of maritime luxury, our crewed charters promise a carefree and opulent experience in Greece. This option is perfect for those who wish to sit back, relax, and soak in the Mediterranean sun while every detail is taken care of by our professional crew. From expert navigation to gourmet meals, and from personalized itineraries to attentive service, every aspect of your voyage is meticulously curated to ensure unparalleled comfort and elegance .

Crewed charters are available on a range of our top end sailing yachts and catamarans , and for those that want the thrum of an engine beneath their feet and to make a grand entrance wherever they go our exclusive motor yachts are waiting for you to step aboard. A crewed charter with Istion isn't just a holiday; it's an all-inclusive experience where you are the honoured guest and the Greek Isles your exclusive playground . Discover more about our fully crewed dream vacations here .

Sailing Yachts

Sailing yachts are perfect for those who love the classic feeling of sailing. Designed to be easy to handle, they smoothly glide through the water and let you enjoy the natural beauty of the Greek seas. They're a bit slower than other boats, and they lean to one side when the wind blows, which is all part of the classic sailing adventure. Their charming appearance and comfortable ride make them ideal for those who want to experience traditional sailing in a relaxed and eco-friendly way.

Sailing yachts are also the most budget friendly option for a sailing holiday in Greece. Our smaller yachts with three cabins and space for up to six guests (or eight if two sleep in the main cabin) can be rented for as little as roughly 1200 Euros a week in the low season. Costs for larger yachts with up to 6 cabins and space for up to 12 guests rise to approximately 10.000 Euros a week in the high season.

At Istion, we proudly offer a wide selection of the latest models as well as impeccably maintained older sailing yachts from Jeanneau, Beneteau, Bavaria, Sun Odyssey, Hanse and other top shipyards. Whether you're planning a cozy trip for a small group or a grand sailing adventure for a larger party, we have the right yacht to suit your needs.

Catamarans are the choice for those who want lots of space and a stable, comfortable trip. With their two-hull design, they don't rock as much as sailing yachts, which is great if you're new to sailing or easily feel seasick. You can also get closer to the beach with a catamaran, as they don't sit very deep in the water. Catamarans offer a smooth and spacious experience, making for a relaxing and comfortable sailing holiday and are a very popular choice for first time sailors in Greece.

For families and larger groups, the bigger cabins and more room to move around on a catamaran make them a good fit for your holiday. The double hull layout means two families can easily sail together while each having their own 'private space' on either side of the main deck. Catamarans also tend to have one washroom per cabin, a feature all parents with teenage kids appreciate.

The comfort and space offered in a catamaran puts them in a higher budget bracket than our monohull sailing yachts. Our smallest catamarans with four cabins and room for up to 10 guests start at roughly 2100 Euros per week in low season. Our top of the line models can range up to 16.000 Euros plus in the middle of the high season.

We are proud to have one of the largest fleets of catamarans in Greece with brand new models from Lagoon, Bali and Fountaine Pajot among others. We invite you to browse all our catamarans and contact us for any guidance you need to help make your sailing adventure in Greece perfect in every way.

Motor Yachts

Motor yachts are all about luxury and speed. They have multiple levels with lots of space, including big bedrooms and expansive living areas. These boats move quickly, powered by strong engines, so they're great if you want to explore a lot of places fast and make an impressive entrance wherever you go.

Our motor yachts are all modern, with plush interiors and all the latest features for entertainment and entertaining. However, they do use more fuel and require a professional captain and crew, so there's a higher cost for this kind of luxury and speed. If you're looking for a high-end and fast-paced trip with all the modern comforts, motor yachts are the way to go .

Catamarans for Charter in Greece

Sailing Catamaran charters in Greece are a convenient way to have a larger number of guests (up to 12) on a comfortable crewed yacht charter.

Notice that the distances in Greece are quite long . Since most luxury catamarans are based in Athens (inquire for Mykonos-based  catamarans ), the ideal catamaran charter itinerary will include the Saronic Islands of Aegina and Hydra .

For a Catamaran charter in the Cyclades , especially if you are planning to visit Santorini , we recommend chartering out of Mykonos. Our brokers will find you a Mykonos-based yacht or arrange a delivery of your desired yacht to the starting location of your charter vacation. Start a chat to tell us what you’re looking for in your catamaran charter, we’re here for you 24/7!

How to charter crewed catamarans in Greece

Ideally, you will inquire about a catamaran charter 12 months in advance . WHY? The best catamarans are often fully booked long in advance and it is not unusual to see popular dates booked 2 summers ahead for a Greek Island yacht charter .

Inquiring less than 6 months ahead often means that your first choice is unavailable for charter. Additionally you might find that the yacht you want can’t make it to the port where you wish to commence your yacht charter.

This is especially important if you are planning to charter in the popular destination -the  Cyclades  (and we recommend  you fly into  Mykonos   international airport to start there). Many things have to fall into place to make a succesfull charter vaccation happen, so  inquire early!

  • Most luxury catamarans are based in Athens (marinas from Piraeus in the west to Saunio in the east).
  • Of the catamarans permanently based in the Cyclades , most have temporary availability.
  • You will also find catamarans based in the Ionian islands available for charter.

Best Areas to Charter Catamarans

The best areas to charter catamarans will have small distances between destinations and calm waters. Although they are more capable of crossing oceans, catamarans are slower than motor yachts, which is why they aren’t good for long distance itineraries.

Taking a group of 2 families with young kids who have not chartered before from Athens to Santorini (because why do the additional flight to Mykonos, right?) in August with the Meltemi winds blazing is not the greatest idea for a relaxed sailing vacation. – We’re happy to provide references for people who insisted, only to regret their Indiana Jones type of vacation.

If you’re afraid there is nothing to see apart from Santorini and Mykonos in the Cyclades Islands? Let Peter show you these assorted charter locations in the Saronic Gulf in the video below…

My Greek Odyssey - Epidavros

My Greek Odyssey - Epidavros

The Saronic Gulf is perfect for first-time charterers – with 2 to 4 hours cruise between islands outside of the Meltemi winds, fantastic locations , and amazing things to do such as the Pistachios of Aegina , walking the old town of Poros or snorkeling the Sunken City of Ancient Epidaurus .

catamaran charter greece reviews

Second up are the Cyclades Islands – still perfectly doable on a 7-day crewed catamaran charter, especially if you plan on starting in the actual Cyclades instead of “ taxiing ” there from Athens . In the cyclades captaina are in a great position to account for the weather (instead of having to cross large distances) and provide a pleasurable yacht charter either hitting the hot spots – windmills of Mykonos (or it’s vibrant night clubs), the sights of the city of Thira on Santorini , the ancient Delos – or the hidden gems such as the forgotten island of Anafi .

Yacht Charter: 3 Most Common Mistakes You'll 100% Make

Yacht Charter: 3 Most Common Mistakes You'll 100% Make

Is the cyclades islands a great area for a catamaran charter.

Yes and no – if planned well and with the expectation that things might change last minute dictated by the weather, a catamaran charter in the Cyclades can be a relaxing and pleasurable experience in the Aegean sea. If you’re an exact planner, and not willing to be flexible, it is wise to avoid it .

A yacht charter is subject to the elements – if the weather is bad, the port authority bans all the yachts to depart (usually just the motor yachts, but do you really want to be out there?). That happens in some areas more than in others, and it does happen more frequently in the Cyclades Islands .

We’ve had experiences where a stubborn travel agent (yes, we cooperate with travel agents on the condition we’re taken seriously) has booked activities on a rigid itinerary with total disregard for the weather conditions and its unpredictability. – Horse ride on Siros, dinner reservation in Skorpios on Mykonos, wine tasting on Santorini starting at 9 am sharp on a Saturday morning – you need Poseidon’s blessing to commit to that…

GREECE: BEST TIPS for Luxury Yacht / Catamaran Charters

A good broker and a good captain will list your preferred activities and pre-arrange them on a confirmation basis . Due to our long time in the industry, we have build relationships with many businesses, attractions, restaurants, and activity providers. We can get you to stuff you did not know existed – Would you for example like to have a private dinner in an iconic ancient ruin ? Would you like to have a famous singer show up at your birthday party at Mykonos? Say the word, and we will make it happen!

The Three Bells of Fira. One of the most recognized places in the world and an absolute bucket list material.

Advantages of chartering a crewed catamaran in Greece

  • Lower fuel consumption compared to motor yachts.
  • Lower cost, especially for catamarans under 50 ft.
  • Shallow draft – you can get quite close to secluded beaches and white sands with a catamaran charter.
  • Access to the dock – especially in high season, bigger yachts might need to stay out of the harbor and access with a dinghy.
  • Captain + stewardess still the most common crew combination (keeps the costs down), bigger – motor yacht like luxury catamarans are on the rise (with more crew).
  • Gratuity – a 10% gratuity paid after the Catamaran charter is considered completely satisfactory in Greece. Compare that to the (up to) 25% mandatory gratuity that is increasingly being demanded in escrow pre-charter in the Caribbean or the Bahamas.
  • Use of water toys and water sports – rules are more relaxed and definitely less enforced compared to France or Italy – it’s not the same if you get on a jetski in a secluded bay on Iraklia or in the overcrowded Gulf of St Tropez.

Mykonos Greece Island

Disadvantages of chartering a catamaran in Greece

  • Low speed mandating a limited itinerary or a lot of sailing hours – It is not unusual for a catamaran charter to move before sunrise to break it up. Can be mitigated by starting in the destination – Mykonos, Santorini, Lefkada (Ionian), Patmos or Ikaria (Dodecanese), Skiathos (Sporades – Mamma Mia Islands)
  • Smaller crew – used to be 2 crew members, now growing (it’s both a positive and a negative) as per your price sensitivity. Compared to the Caribbean – there are more options.
  • Vertical layout – 2 or 3 decks on a horizontally constrained area.

Catamarans vs Motor Yachts

Charter yachts are rapidly growing in size, keeping up with an ever increasing demand for the most luxurious vessel on the market. – In 2020 , the average length of a crewed catamaran was 45 feet . Where, at the end of 2023, the average size of a new catamaran charter was 67 feet .

Given a crazy expansion of the crewed catamaran fleet (demanding a whole new boat show to accommodate this segment starting in 2023 ), the catamarans are getting closer in onboard capacity to motor yachts.  If you’re looking to get a recent Lagoon 52 catamaran sailing charter with crew, inquire early.

Catamaran Elly - A great example of the intersection of motor yachts and catamarans - a recent trend starting in 2022

As mentioned ealier Power catamarans will generally have a lower fuel consumption,  with comparable deck space at the expense of speed. Catamaran charter will be able to get closer to the beach and will get to marinas easier than a huge motor yacht that had a change of itinerary and is looking for a last-minute spot on the dock (and will probably anchor out, hailing the guests from shore with a dinghy).

With the deck space being comparable in Catamaran Charter- the choice is yours – are you looking for a wider deck that’s arguably more casual for a group to sit down, or are you looking to have a bottle of something really nice served to you on the aft deck of a Ferretti motor yacht ?

Some catamarans have moved it's base from Athens to Cape Sounion (Laurio)- the southernmost cape of Attica and the Gateway to the Cyclades - an interesting option to land in Athens and still start

Greece Catamaran Charter Holidays

Zorba Catamaran under full sail in Greece_

Discover Greece from a new perspective with our luxury skippered catamaran charter holidays. Uncover the hidden side of the Greek islands, far from the tourist crowds. Our passionate crews, with years of experience sailing Greek waters, know all the best anchorages, private beaches, and waterside tavernas, ensuring your unforgettable experience. A Greece catamaran charter holiday onboard Zorba Cat allows you to unwind completely, safe in the knowledge that your experience will be tailored to your every need. Spend each day diving into crystal clear waters, exploring ancient ruins ashore, and enjoying the very best of Greek hospitality.

From the rugged beauty of the Cyclades to the rich history of the Saronics, our tailored sailing itineraries promise an unforgettable experience. So whether you want to spend more time ashore exploring ancient ruins, discovering hidden swimming spots, or striking a perfect balance of both, our Greece catamaran charter holidays have something for everyone.

Saronic Island Greece Catamaran Charter Holidays

Tucked south of Athens in the shelter of the Saronic Gulf, the Saronic Islands are well known for their ancient ruins, sandy beaches, and clear blue waters. Our Greece catamaran charter holidays focus on a mixture of inhabited and uninhabited islands that make up the Saronic, with a few mainland harbours thrown into the mix, too. This escape from the tourist rush and bigger cruise boats offers a variety of uninhabited islands to explore alongside the four main populated islands – Salamis, Aegina, Agistri, and Poros. The Saronic showpiece undoubtedly has to be Hydra, known as the jewel of the Saronic. Hydra has no car traffic, so donkeys are the best way to get around! A must-visit is the UNESCO heritage site of the ancient theatre of Epidaurus, one of the best preserved in Greece.

catamaran charter greece reviews

From afternoon anchorages on remote islands lined with crystal coves to the very best, tried and tested tavernas on the main islands, there won’t be time to see it all, and you’ll soon be longing to return before you’ve even stepped foot off the boat.  Read our guide to the Saronic Islands here >

Cyclades Island Greece Catamaran Charter Holidays

Dotted south of mainland Greece, sheltered in the Aegean Sea, the Cyclades consist of around 220 inhabited and uninhabited islands. Our Greece catamaran charter holidays concentrate on the Lesser Cyclades, often called the pearl of the Cyclades, away from the tourist crowds.

Here, it’s all about switching off and adapting to island time. Snorkel in bays and caves, wander local villages, and enjoy traditional Greek tavernas, of which the skippers know the very best.

Zorba Cyclades anchorage

A highlight of any Greece catamaran holiday is undoubtedly the dramatic mountain island of Amorgos , home to a breathtaking monastery carved into the rock. Here, the monks are waiting for you at the top with delicious pelmeni (spiced “baked” raki) and loukoumi after your stair climb. On the way back to Naxos, Paros (with its quieter sister Antiparos) offers guests a chance to visit and feel the “real Greece” with its relaxed local atmosphere.  Read our full guide to the Cyclades islands here >

What to expect onboard a Greece Catamaran Charter Holiday

Zorba Cat is a custom-built charter catamaran designed with comfort and luxury in mind. With two primary dining areas – one in the spacious open saloon and the other on the deck – you’ll enjoy alfresco dining with panoramic views of the Mediterranean. Numerous spots on deck and across the bow nets invite you to relax with a good book or soak up the sunshine. The catamaran features two master ensuite cabins and two forward double ensuite cabins, offering ample space for up to eight guests. Each cabin boasts modern amenities and comfortable accommodations, ensuring a restful night’s sleep after a day of exploration.

Zorba catamaran food dining onboard

Your onboard hosts provide a range of delicious meals for breakfast and lunch before heading ashore to dine in the best local tavernas in the evening. From the exhilaration of hoisting sails to the tranquillity of drifting into secluded coves, whether you’re an experienced sailor or a novice, our crew is dedicated to ensuring your time on board is exactly as you wish. With stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, and snorkel masks included, there’s no shortage of ways to explore the azure waters of Greece’s stunning coastline.

3 WAYS TO CHARTER A YACHT

We provide a selection of three charter options: Bareboat Charters , Skippered Charters , and Crewed Charters . Opting for a Bareboat Charter means you have the freedom to captain the yacht yourself, requiring only a valid International Certificate of Competence (ICC). If you don't possess an ICC or simply prefer to sit back and relax, you have the option to have one of our experienced skippers join your journey, taking the helm for you. We collaborate with a network of highly skilled, multilingual professionals who are eager to come on board.

It's worth noting that some of our larger catamarans and motor yachts are exclusively available as Crewed Charters. With this option, a dedicated crew of at least two individuals, typically a skipper and a hostess or cook, will cater to your every need, ensuring a truly indulgent experience for you and your guests.
