design your yacht

The first step in delivering the yacht of your dreams is to share your vision with the Burger design team and engineering staff. Our in-depth design brief helps define your priorities for a yacht. We recommend touring the Burger shipyard where you can meet our exceptional team, learn how your yacht will be constructed and to witness the true value of Burger’s experience and craftsmanship.

After defining your vision, your dreams will begin to take shape in dramatic conceptual designs, renderings and cost estimates, presented for your direction and approval before moving forward.

Conceptual designs and renderings include:

  • Hull designs
  • Exterior styling and interior floor plans
  • Interior elevation renderings
  • Engines, propulsion and electric generation equipment selection
  • Special requirements, including recreational and/or shore tenders and storage options
  • Navigation electronics and entertainment system descriptions

design your yacht

Once you’ve approved the design, Burger will prepare a detailed design and specification breakdown with descriptions of every step in your yacht’s construction; from its development milestones to key points of approval. With a finalized and signed contract, your yacht is on the way to fruition. Each step of the build is documented before work begins, with a detailed timeline that describes each step of the process, so that you remain involved and aware of our progress, every step of the way.

design your yacht

Months of careful planning and construction culminate when it’s time to launch your new Burger yacht. Along with the Burger team, you and/or your captain take your new Burger yacht through various sea trials, including at-sea observations and detailed walk-through inspections. At this stage, final modifications and refinements are made.

Imagine there are no limits

What is your dream?

Let’s get acquainted

Creating your own personal yacht is a matter of trust. That’s why we take our time to get to know you and your personal needs, wishes and interests. Only then can we win your trust – and make your dreams come true. Whether you are a new owner or an experienced yachtsman, whether your ideal ship is a mid-sized yacht, superyacht or gigayacht, you can rely on Lürssen for in-depth yachtbuilding knowledge combined with state-of-the-art German engineering. As a family-owned and -operated company with four generations of experience in shipbuilding and a highly qualified staff of technicians and engineers, yachts are our life.

Bespoke design makes it possible

Haven’t seen the yacht you’re looking for? Just because it doesn’t exist doesn’t mean it’s not possible – this is the beauty of bespoke design. We are well versed in realizing the most innovative and demanding individual concepts.

Your ideas set the course

The design process begins and ends with your ideas. Whether your thoughts and wishes are clear and well developed or just the first foreshadowing, whether your tastes are traditional or avant-garde, we can interpret your ideas and support you every step of the way in turning them into reality.

Let’s get creative

To make the most of your concepts, we leave no path unexplored. You can exchange thoughts with our expert designers and draftsmen to visualize the full range of possibilities each idea might open up. And as one idea leads to another, you are sure to draw further inspiration from the creative process.

design your yacht

Draw inspiration from sketches of yachts conceptualized by renowned designers.

Young Designer of the Year is a category of Boat International’s Design Awards.

The big picture: 3D modelling

As the design of your custom-built yacht takes shape, we use sophisticated 3D-rendering software to create realist scale images of your vessel. This enables you to fully visualize the final results, compare proportions and imagine further details. After viewing the design in all three dimensions, you can proceed with confidence to the next stages of your project – you’ve seen it with your own eyes.

Your inner world: Interior

With far fewer technical constraints and a world of practical and aesthetic possibilities, the interior of your yacht is a highly personalized refuge for you, your family and friends. Here, you can use various materials and decors to create spaces that match the activities and atmospheres you envision – from intimate private suites and luxury spas to elegant and expansive saloons and al-fresco dining areas.

design your yacht

More fun & adventure: Water toys

To get the most from life at sea, you will want to equip your yacht or megayacht with tenders and watersport gear. Here again, the choice of equipment depends entirely on your taste and interests. Options, generally ordered from third-party suppliers, include speedboats, sailboats, jet-skis and scuba diving technology as well as motor scooters for shore trips. Some yachts are even equipped with small submarines.

design your yacht

Time to start construction

Once your design is complete and you are fully satisfied with all plans, the actual construction can start. According to time-honoured custom, a keel laying ceremony marks the beginning of a fascinating journey that ends with the christening of your luxury yacht. You may add details, but the process continues smoothly to delivery – of a vessel like no other in the world, an exclusive work of art as individual as you are.

Build A Custom Yacht

Full custom build yachts.

Building a full custom yacht to your exact design and specifications is a hugely rewarding undertaking, ensuring you end up with a truly one-of-a-kind superyacht.

Your Custom Yacht Realised

The process of building a custom yacht is exciting yet challenging. The road from concept to creation can be a long one that involves considerable research and planning. TJB Super Yachts’ team of experts is on hand to guide you, acting as a liaison between designers, shipyards, and architects throughout the full journey.

Research, Concept & Design

In the initial phase, a reputable yacht designer will bring to life your dream custom boat, drawing on your specifications and requirements, before requesting the expertise of a naval architect, and lastly an interior designer. Together you will create the perfect package.

shipyard selection

Along the way, the decision on which shipyard is most suitable will have been discussed. TJB Super Yachts have insider knowledge of all the world’s major shipyards, making regular field visits and staying abreast of the latest in development. They will be able to help advise and negotiate on your behalf, offering you a selection based on budget, a particular field of expertise, or specialist knowledge.

contract negotiations

After close consideration between all parties, a final shortlist of shipyards will be made, and a tender process begun. Ultimately, an agreement will be concluded, and a final price established. It is a fascinating and insightful process, with an exciting result. Yet the path can be complex, and the guiding hand of an expert will ensure it remains an enjoyable and fulfilling journey.

Hull Vane®

The Hull Vane® is a patented fixed foil located below the stern of a ship. Developed by renowned Dutch naval architects Van Oossanen it influences the stern wave pattern and creates hydrodynamic lift, which is partially oriented forward. This innovation leads to a significant reduction of the hull's resistance, which in turn enables the installation of much smaller engines, fuel savings and longer range. The Hull Vane® also improves stability underway and at anchor, while reducing both pitching and yawing motions.

Silent package

All the guests' cabins have oversized portholes with laminated 18mm glass according to Class rules and internal double glazing with an air camera of 42mm. The result is that heat and noise transmission are significantly reduced. Build your own yacht

A yacht isn’t built in a day. For the future owner it starts when after years of dreaming they decide that the time to have their own yacht built is now.

Home › Your Yacht › Build your own yacht

Build your imagination

As a process, having your own yacht built comes close to having your own house built. You have an idea, you talk to an architect, you discuss the intended use, possibilities, materials and budgets. Except that when its done, you can take your boat all over the world.

Building a yacht: step by step plan

After a first contact, usually by phone or email, we make an appointment to meet. Face to face, digital or in the flesh, whatever works best for you. We discuss initial ideas, wishes and demands. We want to get to know you and your sailing intentions, so we understand what kind of boat fits you. When we have a general idea of the intended use, the size, hull shape, riging wishes and budget, that’s when we can start sketching.

We draw our initial designs. Top view, side views. These sketches form the basis of a process that can take anything from a couple of months to more than a year. There are many choices to make. Shape, size, exterior, interior, materials, number of masts, huts, bunks, engine type to name but a few. After each round of schetches we discuss the design choices. If they meet your demands and how they have consequences for other wishes you might have. You can imagine how for example the choice for a lifting keel influences the interior.

Prepare for building

When the final drawings are approved, we can prepare for hull building. This means breaking the whole design down to a list of all parts and materials and checking their availability. Once we know when we can have all necessary materials, we can start planning the build.

Start building

The day we start the actual build is a special day. If in any way possible the owners are present and get the honour of performing the first weld, much like laying the first brick when building a new house.

When the hull is done and it is time to build the interior, we ideally make a mockup of the yacht so we can walk you through it and make sure we’re still on the right track.

Finishing touch

Now it’s time for finishing, electricity, plumbing and then we’re ready for testing.

Before we can launch, we test everything inside. Water, plumbing, lights, gas and if everything works as planned, it time to launch.

Launch time

The moment everybody has been waiting for. Launch time. But the yacht isn’t finished yet. The next step still holds some essential parts.

Getting ready

Mast, rigging and sails are installed. Quite important for a sail boat.

Now your yacht is ready to be tested in the field, or in our case in the lake, the IJsselmeer.

And then, after what usually has been more than 12 months, we can hand the ownership officially over to you.

A custom built yacht is unique. There is no way of knowing beforehand that what looked like an excellent idea on paper, will perform exactly as expected. So after a few weeks of sailing, you might want to come back and have some options changed or added. This is normal and we still have to build our first yacht that doesn’t need a few tweaks here and there before its new owners are perfectly happy.

Design Process

Translating the customer’s demands and wishes into a comfortable, reliable and safe yacht is basically what the design process entails. It all starts with listening to the customer, what do they want, what do they need and how can we make that happen.

This is the first stage of the process where we either meet in person or speak through video call to understand your needs/expectations and same time for you to understand my skills and expertise.

This is the important stage where the design gets the soul out of thin air. It is about discussing the style and ideas that you would like to be reflected on the design.

Once the concept is ready the next phase of the design begins. That includes Sketches, Plans, Modelling, Rendering and finally presenting the final output. This is the stage where there will be constant follow up from the client to make sure he gets his desired results. Once the plans or ready it will be delivered to the owner or the shipyard.

This is the final stage that happens in the shipyard. If required from the client the construction can be fully followed up to make sure that nothing gets deviated from design or plans. Once the construction is over all the necessary test and trials are conducted to get the boat approved. Finally handed over to the client.

It’s Time To Build Your Own Yacht

If you’re ever trying to rationalize a reason to build your own yacht,  look no further than your dreams. Think of the places you’ll go. The true beauty of a yacht, sometimes forgotten in her size and her solid feel and homelike surroundings, is that she is a conveyance, a mode of transport that can bring you and your family and friends to anywhere you could wish.

build your own yacht

Build A Yacht For Your Lifestyle

Imagine spending the day exploring the meandering, shadowed streets of an old world town, having lunch at a sidewalk café, and showing your children or grandchildren the frescoes of a cathedral you learned about in a college art class (was it really that long ago?), returning to the yacht at dusk for dinner on board, and then an overnight passage, where you wake to discover an island laid out before you, with no other boats around, and a selection of snorkeling gear, standup paddleboards, kayaks, and more at your disposal. Only a yacht can deliver this kind of experience.

Yacht Building Is Your Ultimate Creation

But, why build your own yacht? It’s a good question. When you’re ready to make your mark on both the world and your life, there are few better ways to express oneself than through the creation of something wonderful. And, with a team of professionals dedicated to making your dreams a reality, and guide you through the steps of creating something real, and substantial, and beautiful, there’s no limit to what you can accomplish. To build your own yacht is to embrace your full understanding of the yin and yang of your personality.

Custom Mega Yachts

Your custom yacht also comprises the beautiful spaces you will create and enjoy with your family and friends, replete with the welcoming social spaces that will offer unmatched vistas, embracing the sea breezes on the aft deck or from the flying bridge, gathering spots for the whole family that will provide the latest in media technology or a respite from it, as you prefer. How you want to divide your available space between stateroom and bath, closets and seating, galley and on-board gym, family and guests, it’s all up to you.

Build or Buy A Luxury Yacht

Of course, the creative process required to build your own yacht doesn’t happen overnight—and that’s part of the appeal, since the ultimate goal is meant to have an air of timelessness, of real creation, of getting it right. Often a candidate for a yacht-building project will instead buy a mega yacht, and this can be a simpler solution to one looking to step into a situation for the upcoming season. But similar to undertaking the effort to build your own yacht, the purchase process will be aided by dedicated professionals who will look to you for direction.

Luxury Yacht Ownership Awaits

Knowing one’s mind in terms of the required capabilities of the yacht and also the amenities desired will certainly help the process along and may in fact inspire you to consider building your own yacht, especially after one considers the available inventory on the market. After all, it all gets back to you and your dreams. And when you think of the places you’ll go, yacht ownership simply makes sense . The question is not, “ why buy a yacht ? ” The question is simply when and how. So whether you wish to know how to buy a yacht , build your own yacht or buy a mega yacht, the next step awaits.

This Off-Grid Eco-Cabin In The Woods Is An Exploration In Sustainable Building Practices

design your yacht

Designed by Architect Micheal Quirk, this quaint little micro-cabin is designed to display the efficiency of sustainable building practices. Dubbed the Magnolia Eco-Cabin, this dwelling is built using locally sourced and recycled materials. It runs off the grid using solar power. The cabin occupies 11 square meters and is located in a forest in Nederland, Colorado. The architect thought of the cabin while he was serving on the Colorado Green Building Guild Board.

Designer: Micheal Quirk

design your yacht

“The carbon-negative, eco tiny home was an idea that I came up with while on the Colorado Green Building Guild board, to highlight some of our members who are building material suppliers and also carbon negative/net zero energy building techniques,” said Quirk. “The cabin is successful in sequestering carbon through the organic nature of the materials used to build it.”

The Magnolia Eco-Cabin has a finishing of locally sourced birch plywood mixed with reused treated cedar shiplap siding, and pine wood siding. The mixture was charred using the Japanese technique Shou Sugi Ban to protect and preserve the exterior of the cabin. Metal panels are also incorporated, which were the leftovers from Quirk’s other architectural projects. In fact, the windows and doors are reused as well. The insulation comprises a mixture of hempcrete and hemp wool.

design your yacht

As you enter the cabin, you are welcomed by a space that is simple and basic. It includes two rooms which span over two floors. The ground level is occupied by a firewood storage area, a wood-burning stove, as well as a dining/work table with a chair. The table and chair are positioned next to a window, which offers a lovely view of the forest. Storage-integrated stairs and a small ladder lead you to the bedroom. The bedroom is like most typical tiny house bedrooms. It is equipped with a low ceiling, a double bed, and some glazing. The house seems quite comfortable and cozy, even though it is pretty simple.

design your yacht

The home also includes a roof-based solar panel array, which is attached to batteries, to power the home when the sun is not out. The cabin does have a few drawbacks as it doesn’t feature a bathroom or a kitchen. And it also lacks running water. So it is definitely an inconvenient space to stay in for longer than a day in my opinion.

What Happened to the Crew of a Florida Boat Found Abandoned at Sea — Pirates or Murderers?

When the Joe Cool was found 140 miles off course of the Miami-Bimini route sans crew or passengers, investigators questioned a fugitive who once posed as a C.I.A. agent.

design your yacht

Six Americans boarded a charter fishing boat in Miami Beach, Florida, heading for the western Bahaman shores of Bimini. But when the vessel, dubbed Joe Cool, failed to make its return, friends and family feared the worst, as featured in the season premiere of Deadly Waters with Captain Lee .

What happened to Joe Cool?

How to watch.

Watch  Deadly Waters with Captain Lee  on Oxygen Saturdays at 9/8c and next day on Peacock.

On September 22, 2007, the 47-foot fishing vessel left the Miami Beach Marina, planning to make the 50-odd-mile trip east to the Bahaman coast. On board were the boat’s captain, Jake Branam, his wife, Kelley Branam, and two crewmen: Scott Gamble, Jake Branam’s half-brother, and first mate Samuel “Sammy” Kairy, a close friend of the family. All four were well-versed in the world of fishing and boating, said those who knew them best.

That day, two men booked the Joe Cool to take them for the roughly two-and-a-half-hour ride to Bimini. They paid $4,000 to Branam, and though the crew suggested the pair could take a much cheaper flight, the men claimed their girlfriends accidentally stowed their passports in inaccessible luggage, and therefore, they wanted to book the Joe Cool.

Jake Branam featured on Deadly Waters With Captain Lee Episode 101

Jake Branam’s uncle and Joe Cool owner, Jeff Branam, reported the party “overdue” to authorities the next day.

“When a vessel is reported as overdue, that means the boat did not meet its scheduled return, but overdues happen all the time,” said Deadly Waters host Captain Lee of Bravo ’s Below Deck franchise. “The fish are biting, and passengers want to stay out longer, or people drink too much in Bimini and need to sleep it off, which causes a delay.”

It should have been a straightforward trip to Bimini and back. Branam reportedly planned to drop the men off on a boat that carried their girlfriends and then squeeze in some fishing on the way back. But what struck loved ones as odd was that Branam — who shared two children with his wife — had business to attend the following day, according to true crime author Carol Cope.

“It was important to Jake to be back the next day in time for another charter that he had planned,” Cope told Deadly Waters.

According to Jake Branam and Scott Gamble’s sister, Amie Gamble, Jake Branam was well on his way to finding success.

“In 2007, Joe Cool was doing amazing,” said the sister. “Jake knew where to go to find the fish, so so many people were contacting him, and his charter boat business began to really, really take off.”

Authorities search for missing boat Joe Cool

The United States Coast Guard (U.S.C.G.) sent out a PAN-PAN message, the equivalent of what a Be On the Lookout (B.O.L.O.) means on land. When officials failed to contact the Joe Cool, an official search and rescue operation, which included searches by air and sea, commenced, according to now-retired Edwin Daniels of the U.S.C.G. Miami Sector.

Scott Gamble featured on Deadly Waters With Captain Lee Episode 101

“We knew that something was wrong,” Daniels told Deadly Waters.

Authorities were aware the waters between Miami and Bimini were no stranger to drug smuggling and piracy — especially out of Cuba — but there was still no sign of the Joe Cool along the well-traveled route.

Then, about 36 hours after the group left on the Joe Cool, Commanding Officer Jonathan Carter of the U.S.C.G.’s Cutter Pea Island — which guarded the Key West — was alerted by a deck officer about a “target of interest” on the horizon.

The vessel’s conning tower told Carter that the boat was used for sports fishing, but it was spotted in an “unusual” location, about 30 miles north of Cuba and 140 miles off-course of the Joe Cool’s planned route.

“Sports fishers don’t need to run that far south and burn that much fuel to find fish,” Carter told Deadly Waters.

Another disturbing observation was that the 75-foot anchor lines had been “let out” despite the boat being in “well over 200 feet of water.” The stern door of the Joe Cool was open and swinging about.

Authorities, learning the boat was the missing Joe Cool, believed it was intentionally left there. According to Captain Lee, fast-moving Gulf currents surged north, making it impossible for a boat to drift south where it was discovered.

“If the Joe Cool had a mechanical problem, the current would have pushed it north at a very rapid rate, meaning that the only way the boat could have ended up at the location where it was found is if someone intentionally piloted the vessel in that direction, going against the current,” said Captain Lee.

“A crime scene floating in the middle of the ocean”

The U.S.C.G.’s boarding team circled the vessel, cautious of possible hijackers on board. After getting clearance from their X.O. (Executive Officer), they boarded the Joe Cool and found no one.

Inside, car keys, wallets, and fishing poles in their fishing positions were “clear indications” that passengers had no intentions of leaving, according to Carter. Officers also found blood on the scene, and though the blood might have been from caught fish, they called in the F.B.I. for assistance.

A missing life raft highlighted that survivors could still be out there and possibly injured.

“At this point, the U.S. Coast Guard called the F.B.I. in this matter because the F.B.I. has primacy in crime on the high seas as it relates to U.S. persons and citizens,” said F.B.I. Supervisory Special Agent David Nunez. “It’s a very unique situation where your crime scene is floating in the middle of the ocean. You have to think very carefully about the strategy you’re going to use and how you’re going to investigate this.”

Some of the Joe Cool passengers are found

Urgency only grew at the threat of an impending monsoon, and officials scanned sea and land through the night, including along Anguilla Cay, about 11.5 nautical miles north of where the Joe Cool was found. Authorities tasked with protecting the crime scene towed the boat back to land in light of the forecast.

“We still had hope,” said Amie Gamble.

The following day, air searchers spotted a covered lifeboat south of Anguilla Cay with the stenciled name “Joe Cool” on the side. The wind formed by the helicopter blades blew the tarp off, exposing two people inside.

The U.S.C.G. lowered baskets into the water and saved the two passengers. Since noise prevented helicopter passengers from hearing one another, one of the saved men wrote on a piece of paper: “West Bimini. We were abandoned in the boat. Hijacking. Four Killed.”

With the new information provided by the passengers, later identified as 18-year-old Guillermo Zarbozo and 36-year-old Kirby Archer, searches for the Branams, Gamble, and Kairy were called off.

“Not having any closure, there’s no grave to go to,” Amie Gamble told Deadly Waters. “The only place we can go is the ocean.”

A second search of the Joe Cool

Authorities conducted a second search of the Joe Cool once it made land, where they found four 9mm spent shell casings, which supported the men’s statements. But in what F.B.I. Special Agent Nunez called an “odd crime scene,” a blowgun, darts, throwing stars, and a handcuff key were also found on site, and expensive fishing and electrical equipment had been left behind.

“It looked ransacked, but it didn’t appear that anything was stolen,” Nunez told Deadly Waters.

“By definition, pirates are robbers who travel by sea,” said Captain Lee. “What pirates don’t do is board a boat, kill and remove the crew and passengers, and then leave without taking all of the valuables.”

As the surviving passengers headed back to dry land with authorities, Zarbozo — seeing the Joe Cool — commented to a federal agent that he’d never been on the boat, which “didn’t make sense” since he was found in the Joe Cool lifeboat, according to Nunez. It signaled that he was lying.

“So, at this point, we had reason to detain,” said Nunez. “Had it not been for that, they would have walked off that Coast Guard cutter.”

Interviews with Guillermo Zarbozo and Kirby Archer

In F.B.I. interviews, Zarbozo claimed three Cuban pirates killed Jake Branam, Kelley Branam, Scott Gamble, and Sammy Kairy before forcing Kirby Archer to drive the Joe Cool toward Cuba, running out of gas about eight hours later. However, Zarbozo’s story didn’t match Archer’s, as there were inconsistencies with what the purported hijackers wore when leaving on a second boat and in what order they murdered the victims.

But, according to U.S.C.G.’s Edwin Daniels, “Nothing can explain why you get in a life raft on a boat that’s perfectly seaworthy.”

The Joe Cool was well-equipped with communications gear that anyone could easily use in case of an emergency. Furthermore, investigators wondered why alleged pirates would kill four people and let two live while also leaving items of value behind.

Federal Prosecutor Karen Gilbert helped examine the survivors’ backgrounds, finding that  Zarbozo lived with his family in South Florida and had no criminal history. The teen worked as an armed security officer and reportedly had aspirations of one day working in law enforcement.

Kirby Archer, on the other hand, had a pending warrant for his arrest out of Arkansas, where he reportedly worked as a Wal-Mart customer service manager before allegedly stealing from his place of employment. Author Carol Cope said he was accused of stealing upward of $92,000 before going on the run.

This, F.B.I. Special Agent Nunez told Deadly Waters  that gave Archer a motive, and it was enough for the Feds to keep him in custody. But for Guillermo Zarbozo, prosecutors needed something to stick.

“It’s very difficult to prosecute a murder case at sea, and if we can’t charge him right away, we were very concerned that he would flee to avoid prosecution,” Prosecutor Gilbert told Deadly Waters.

Kirby Archer Confesses to Murder

Shell casings found on the Joe Cool lined up with a receipt found in Zarbozo’s Florida home, showing a purchase for 9mm ammunition made by the same brand of ammo found on the boat. Agents confronted the suspects with the ballistics results and,, coupled with the threat of prosecutors seeking the death penalty, Archer agreed to talk.

Archer told investigators that he and Zarbozo met at an auto body shop where the latter worked as a security guard. Archer presented himself as a C.I.A. agent, recruiting Zarbozo to help him with a job in Cuba, according to Cope.

“Zarbozo wanted to get into law enforcement,” Gilbert said. “Kirby Archer was telling him that if he successfully did this mission, he would get him a job with the C.I.A.”

Investigators believe Archer was attempting to flee to Cuba to avoid charges in the other cases against him.

Archer claimed he first shot Captain Jake Branam and then his wife, Kelley. He said it was Zarbozo who killed Gamble and Kairy before throwing all four victims overboard.

Their bodies have never been found.

Ultimately, Archer pleaded guilty to avoid the death penalty, though Zarbozo maintained that the quadruple murder was “part of a covert C.I.A. operation,” according to Captain Lee.

Zarbozo went to trial on a 16-count indictment, which included facing charges of murder, robbery, overtaking a vessel, and other firearm charges. A jury unanimously found him guilty on all counts.

Archer and Zarbozo are now serving five consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. Jake Branam and Scott Gamble’s sister, Amie Gamble, told Deadly Waters that the men’s punishment was “such a relief.”

“As the years have gone by, you’re reminded every holiday that you don’t have the hugs, and the joy, and the love from the ones we’ve lost,” she said. “We’ll never have that again. There’s still a hole that will never go away.”
