TWENTY-TWO YEARS OF

5-Star Reviews!

5 star review

From the moment of initial contact with Captain Yiannis, everything was seamless.

Our experience has been nothing short of exceptional.

From the moment of initial contact with Captain Yiannis, everything was seamless. This company and the entire team could not have been more helpful! We live in the USA and never had a problem with communication. The Catamaran we selected was the Lagoon 450F. It was beautiful, spacious, clean, and easy to live on for a week as we sailed to beautiful beaches.

The Ionian Islands we visited were breathtaking, especially Kefalonia – it was our favorite! Above all, the feeling of safety that Captain George ensured throughout our trip made our journey even more memorable. We can’t wait to experience it again.

So, if you’re looking for an unforgettable sailing experience around the Greek Islands with a professional company and a knowledgeable and friendly guide, look no further!

The Great Greek Adventure

We have seen many islands thanks to Yannis, who has an unsurpassed knowledge of the, and we might add amazing docking skills! Matoula has been an amazing hostess, a wonderful cook and always gracious with a beautiful attitude. We will never forget our Great Adventure!

A safe pair of hands, experience and unlimited knowledge.

We’ve just spent a week sailing the Greek islands with Captain Yiannis. If your looking for a safe pair of hands, experience and unlimited knowledge of the Greek islands then Yiannis is the captain you need.

Jeff Brown May 10th 2019

Great knowledge of the area and its history.

Excellent week of sailing in the Greek Islands with Yiannis. He has great knowledge of the area and its history. He showed us unique beaches and key sites on the islands. A memorable week of adventure, drama, and weather. A great first visit to the country of Greece and its islands. Recommend Yiannis as a skipper and guide for your trip.

David and Suzanne Kelly September 25, 2021

The kids enjoyed jumping off the boat and even steering.

We made it back safely and happily to Paros today. Yianni showed us secluded beaches, surprising chortas and agreed to take us to santorini even though he hates sailing there! The kids enjoyed jumping off the boat and even steering it on occasion. It’s a beautiful part of the world and we’d definitely recommend exploring it.

Christine August 22, 2021

Yannis is a superb captain

First and foremost, Yannis is a superb captain. He is a true professional and puts the comfort and safety of the guests first. We had a superb week and thanks to the knowledge of Yannis we visited hidden beaches and places that were sublime. Yannis is passionate about sailing, and we all improved our sailing skills and learned about sailing this magical part of the world.

We cannot wait to return and know that Captain Yannis is our go-to Greek master of the seas.”

Kim Cornwall and friends October 14, 2021

The best tavernas for dining and the most interesting places to visit.

My friends and I had a terrific sailing trip with Cpt. Yiannis. We sailed islands from Athens to Milos for a week. [...] Captain Yiannis was not only an outstanding skipper, but he also is a very knowledgeable tour guide. [...] Also, he had tremendous knowledge of any island we stopped on the way and recommended the best tavernas for dining and the most interesting places to visit.

The captain was very professional and sailed extremely safe and responsible. Great guy, a great captain, thank you, Captain Yiannis!

Remis – Boston, USA June 26, 2021

Yannis gave us the ideal family yacht

We had a wonderful week of sailing in the Saronic Gulf end of August. Yannis gave us the ideal family yacht for this bareboat charter trip . Together with the charter company we felt us in very good hands, for all questions we had. Except in this year 2020, with these special conditions!

Thanks Yiannis.

EXPERIENCED SKIPPERS. LOCAL EXPERTS.

Greek Seas is different from other charter sailing companies. Our trips are always guided by skippers we know extremely well and have sailed with before. We’ve been working with the same skippers for as long as 10 years – and after your trip, you’ll understand why.

We also offer the option to include a hostess on your trip. Our hostesses are skilled Greek cooks who prepare delicious, authentic, Greek dishes throughout the week. They’ll also help keep the yacht clean throughout your trip.

greek isles yachting

SEAMLESS & PERSONALIZED BOOKING PROCESS

Our experts are ready to help with everything from choosing a yacht to tips on what to pack.

Let us know how many people are in your group and when you’d like to travel and we’ll get back to you with yacht availability and pricing.

greek isles yachting

NO HIDDEN FEES

Our prices include an amazing Greek skipper and all port fees, taxes, linens, and cleaning at the end of the trip. We even include the cost of fuel, so there are no surprise expenses or extra fees during your trip.

If you choose to add a hostess to your charter, daily breakfast and lunch on the yacht is also included, plus local wine and beer. For these trips, the only costs not included are your dinners at amazing local restaurants on each island.

GIVING BACK to the COMMUNITY

At Greek Seas, we’re deeply committed to our local communities. That’s why we are proud to donate a portion of our profits to local Greek charities every year.

This year, we partnered with The Smile of a Child , an award-winning and internationally recognized non-profit whose mission is to prevent violence, poverty, and illness among children in Greece.

OUR GUESTS SAY IT BEST

greek-seas-trip-advisor

“We were 2 couples on their brand new Saona catamaran for 7 nights. We thoroughly enjoyed our days at sea and our nights at port. We had breakfast and lunch on board and dinner ashore at a different island or port every night… It was a lovely experience and we recommend this company!”

“This is my second trip on Greek Seas. That should say it all. First trip was a week and this one was 10 days. Another Great experience this time with Kostas and Mary… Islands were great, food was fantastic. Mary is a food magician. Kostas knows the islands backwards and forwards and helped us choose the right islands. Definitely recommend this group if you want a trip of a life time.”

“We had a great week sailing around the islands. We’d never been sailing before and had no real idea what to expect. However the skipper was very knowledgeable and professional. We had our daughter with us and I felt at all times that our safety was his priority. We saw some fantastic sights as well as being asked what we wanted to get out of the holiday. I would recommend Greek Seas without hesitation.”

Charter a Sailing Yacht in Greece

We know that Greece is a fabulous destination. But, why charter a sailing yacht or catamaran?

Build Your Own Itinerary

Sailing yachts are your luxury transportation and accommodations on the sea, with the ability to build your own itinerary. You can wake up in a new place each day or spend several days in the same picturesque place. It’s all up to you.

Greece on Board offers 7-and-15-day itineraries.

Good for a Range of Travelers

Another reason sailing yachts are a great choice is that they cater to a wide range of people. Whether you are a beginner sailor or an experienced one, if you prefer to be active or to take things slow, chartering a sailing yacht is an excellent choice. Families, couples, friends, and adventurers-it’s an unforgettable experience no matter the size or interests of your group.

Your Own Skipper and Team

The best reason to charter a sailing yacht is that you can see the Greek islands from a private vessel with your own skipper and experienced team. You just have to relax and enjoy the ride.

It’s an Immersive Experience

There is nothing like sailing on the Greek seas. Let the skipper and his crew harness the wind and take you from one breathtaking island to the next.

Sailing by wind is one of the purest experiences in life. Our sailing vessels not only provide transportation but a full, immersive travel experience that offers our guests a deep connection to nature and the sea. No engine noise or rumbling, just following the ebbs and flows of the water around us and the wind that guides us, lulling our guests into a state of relaxation and happiness.

Sailing Destinations

Greece on Board offers a variety of destinations on your 7-or-15-day private sailing yacht sailing trip. Some of the island destinations might be changed because of weather or sea conditions, but your skipper has the experience of knowing when to adjust course if necessary. Here are some of the wonderful places we have the possibility of visiting.

The Saronic Gulf

The Saronic Gulf is a body of water nestled between mainland Greece and the Southern Peloponnese, a short sail from Athens.

An ideal place to sail for people looking for a relaxing, easy sailing vacation, the Saronic Gulf offers calm waters, natural beauty, and beautiful historical and waterfront sites.

There are many beautiful places to visit on the Peloponnesian coastline in addition to many picturesque islands in the Saronic Gulf. We highly recommend including Hydra, Spetses, and Poros.

The Cyclades

A sailing trip to the Cyclades offers a trip through the pearls of the Aegean and some of the most visited destinations in Greece.

There is a reason people love the Cyclades . The architectural scenery of white-washed houses, hilltop churches, and idyllic villages dazzles the eyes. There are unlimited beaches, coves, and blue waters to explore.

While the water conditions in the Cyclades are sometimes rough during July and August, it might be enjoyable for more experienced sailors.

Some of the islands that the Greece on Board team can include in your Cycladic itinerary are:

Yacht Charters in Greece with Istion

Greece is quite simply the perfect sailing destination in Europe. Blessed with a mild southern Mediterranean climate with an extended summer giving a comfortable sailing season of close to eight months, our small country has over 13,000 kilometres of coastline to explore . That impressive number comes from the over 6000 islands and islets scattered like diamonds in the sea, each of them inviting you to swim for hours, socialise while tasting Greece’s well know cuisine and enjoy the beauty of a Greek summer spent next to the waves. Greece is truly a sailor’s paradise .

At Istion Yachting, we have been providing unforgettable sailing holidays in Greece for more than 30 years. From our humble beginnings on the island of Kos in 1992 we now offer charters throughout Greece from our 11 main charter bases. Our experienced skippers and crews, charter base staff, planning departments and every one of the wider Istion team is an expert in their field and is ready to assist you in planning the perfect sailing holiday in Greece . We look forwarded to welcoming you this summer!

There are so many options, and only so much time. The diversity of the different sailing areas in Greece makes picking just one difficult, which is why so many of our guests come back to sail again and again . There is always another beautiful island to visit and another idyllic beach to swim on!

Peak sailing season is from late June through August with hot weather, warm seas and busy islands. Availability can become limited during this period so booking early is essential.

Late spring from May to June and late summer from September to early October are often considered the best time to sail for experienced sailors and repeat visitors to our country. The weather is great and the islands are more relaxed than the busy summer months.

For those who want to live the real Greek way of life, April and October can be rewarding, with less heat, fewer visitors and enticing low-season offers . A few of the restaurants and shops on some islands may not have opened or may have closed for the season, but in our opinion early and late season sailing in Greece is a magical and unique experience .

The Argo Saronic Gulf is actually two gulfs (the Saronic and Argolic ) that are often referred to together in sailing terms given their close distances to each other. The Saronic Gulf lies in between Athens and the coast of the Argolid Peninsula while the Argolic Gulf is one hop over in between the peninsula and the first large leg of the Eastern Peloponnese , which runs all the way south to Monemvasia.

We often recommend this area to first time sailors for a number of practical reasons. First and foremost, it is the easiest area to reach from Athens , which makes it an ideal spot for those arriving via the Athens International Airport. Within a few hours of touching down you can be swimming and relaxing on board having reached your first destination.

Another advantage is that the area is well protected from the annual Meltemi winds that can blow strongly in July and August and may create challenging conditions for less experienced sailors.

The Argo Saronic Gulf also has plenty of places to visit on either a one or two-week holiday. One-week holidays will usually take in the nearby islands of Aigina and Poros before looping down to the coastal town of Ermioni and the cosmopolitan islands of Spetses and Hydra further south. A visit to Epidavros for a quick trip to its famous ancient theatre is not to be missed for the history buffs.

Two week holidays allow you to explore further east, with the coastal towns of Nafpleio, Leonidio and Kyparissi offering relaxed mooring while cruising the coast of the Eastern Peloponnese.

We invite you to learn more about our Athens charter base , download our sample one-week Saronic Gulf sailing itinerary for inspiration and contact us with any questions, we are here to help you plan your perfect sailing holiday.

Ah, the Cyclades. A name steeped in history that brings the classic image of a Greek island to everyone’s mind. While Greece has many island chains and all of them are unique and magical, the Cyclades has become nearly synonymous with the county as a whole for many visitors.

Characterised by their white houses, rugged landscapes and world famous beaches , the Cyclades attract visitors from around the world and are a must see for everyone at some point in their life. For sailors the area offers a huge variety of routes and islands to visit, from the world famous islands Mykonos and Santorini to the popular Paros and Naxos and many, many more in between.

A note about the Meltemi winds that blow from the north in July and August. In the Cyclades these winds can make for challenging conditions and sailing the area during these times is best for experienced sailors. Don’t despair all you beginner sailors! If you want a helping hand our skippers are the best in Greece and will be happy to take care of the sailing and navigation so you can enjoy the islands worry free.

The Cyclades are reached from our main base in Alimos Marina on the western side of Attica giving quick access to the islands of Kea, Kithnos, Serifos, Sifnos and Milos among others.

Our base in Lavrion is perfect for getting a head start to the islands of Andros, Tinos, Mykonos, Paros and Naxos . The Lavrion base is further south and on the east side of Attica, saving a couple of hours of additional sailing time on your way out. As an added bonus, Lavrion is just half an hour from the Athens International Airport so you can be on your way towards your destination just an hour or two after landing.

Located on the western side of Greece the seven main islands of the Ionian Sea have their own unique charm and character . The Ionian Islands are much greener than most islands in Greece, their location and geography bringing more rainfall during the winter months and allowing trees and shrubs to grow and thrive. The combining of colours between the green of the hills , the white of the sands and the blue of the sea are a special treat for visitors to this area.

Istion maintains three bases in the Ionian, on Corfu in the north and in Lefkas (or Lefkada) and nearby Preveza further south.

Itineraries starting from Corfu may include multiple stops along the Corfu coast, visits to the islands of Paxos and Antipaxos and visits to mainland ports including Parga and Syvota .

Trips starting from Lefkas or Preveza may head either north towards Corfu or South towards the islands of Kalamos and Kastos and then on to the mythical island of Ithaca and nearby Kefalonia . Note that our base in Preveza is just 10 minutes from the Aktion Airport where all charter flights to Lefkas arrive. If your flight times are tight, Preveza is a great option .

We recommend downloading our sample sailing itineraries for trips leaving from Corfu and from Lefkas or Preveza . If you need more recommendations for a truly unique voyage through to the Ionian just contact us , we will be happy to help.

The Dodecanese islands in the southeast Aegean are close to our heart. The central island of Kos is where Istion Yachting first started operations in 1992 .

The Dodecanese are known for their wonderful beaches and rich history ranging from the ancient to the medieval to the modern in a delightful kaleidoscope of sights and sounds . The area has relatively mild wind conditions that are perfect for sailing throughout the year and has plenty of sun and warmth during the summer months.

Istion now has two bases in the Dodecanese, our home base on Kos and another on the historic island of Rhodes . From Kos you may head north towards the islands of Kalimos, Leros and Patmos and if time permits all the way to amazing Ithaki and Fourni .

Heading south from Kos will put you on course to visit the islands north of Rhodes including Nisiros, Tilos and Symi . Setting sail from Rhodes itself also reaches these islands or you can choose to head west, exploring the coast of Rhodes and visiting the quaint island of Chalki and the beautiful islands of Karpathos and Kasos .

Charter flights from most European countries fly direct to both Kos and Rhodes making them a great starting point for your next Aegean adventure !

The Sporades are the hidden gem on the Greek sailing map . Nestled off the eastern coast of central Greece the main islands of Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos and Skyros are a beautiful combination of green mountains, sandy and pebble beaches and deep blue seas. Nature plays a staring role here, with the National Marine Park at Alonissos being a significant refuge for the Monachus Monachus or Mediterranean seal .

Sailing conditions in the Sporades are relatively mild, although winds can shift between the day and night requiring some care when mooring. Distances between islands are short allowing a lot of fun to be packed into a week long charter .

We have two charter bases servicing the Sporades, a base on the island of Skiathos where most European charter flights arrive and another on the mainland city of Volos . Volos is a convenient starting spot for guests arriving by road with their own vehicle and allows exploring of the lovely coastline of the Pagasetic Gulf and Pelion on your way out to the islands – highly recommended !

Bareboat Charters

Tailored for the seasoned sailor, bareboat charters hand the helm over to you, allowing complete freedom to navigate the Greek seas at your own pace . Your sailing party must have at least one licensed skipper and one experienced crew member at a minimum to be able to rent our yachts as bareboats.

If you have some sailing experience but do not hold a valid license then a bareboat charter is not (yet) for you and your best option is a skippered charter where our friendly captains will give you a helping hand. If you are an experienced sailor and have no concerns about the challenges of wind conditions, navigation and docking then we invite you to read more about our bareboat charters here and contact us with any questions you may have.

Skippered Charters

Our skippered charters are the perfect blend of guidance and freedom, designed for those who have some sailing experience, are eager to learn or just want to relax and let a professional do the hard work . With an Istion skipper at your side, you can enjoy the peace of mind that comes with their expert navigation and docking skills while still playing an active role in your sailing adventure.

It's an educational and exhilarating experience where you can hone your sailing skills, participate in manoeuvring the yacht, and even take the helm under the watchful eye of your skipper. It is an amazing experience for everyone and kids in particular have a great time learning about sailing and playing little captain for a week.

Our skippered charters always start off with a briefing between you and your skipper so you can learn about the area you are going to sail and the islands you may want to visit. Our skippers know the Greek seas inside out and based on your preferences they will suggest recommended itineraries to follow, which islands to visit and what hidden beaches to swim at.

If you are planning your first sailing holiday in Greece , you are in the very best hands with Istion's professional skippers by your side. Read more about our skippered charters here , or just get in touch to start planning your perfect sailing holiday in Greece.

Fully Crewed Charters

For those of you that want to indulge in the epitome of maritime luxury, our crewed charters promise a carefree and opulent experience in Greece. This option is perfect for those who wish to sit back, relax, and soak in the Mediterranean sun while every detail is taken care of by our professional crew. From expert navigation to gourmet meals, and from personalized itineraries to attentive service, every aspect of your voyage is meticulously curated to ensure unparalleled comfort and elegance .

Crewed charters are available on a range of our top end sailing yachts and catamarans , and for those that want the thrum of an engine beneath their feet and to make a grand entrance wherever they go our exclusive motor yachts are waiting for you to step aboard. A crewed charter with Istion isn't just a holiday; it's an all-inclusive experience where you are the honoured guest and the Greek Isles your exclusive playground . Discover more about our fully crewed dream vacations here .

Sailing Yachts

Sailing yachts are perfect for those who love the classic feeling of sailing. Designed to be easy to handle, they smoothly glide through the water and let you enjoy the natural beauty of the Greek seas. They're a bit slower than other boats, and they lean to one side when the wind blows, which is all part of the classic sailing adventure. Their charming appearance and comfortable ride make them ideal for those who want to experience traditional sailing in a relaxed and eco-friendly way.

Sailing yachts are also the most budget friendly option for a sailing holiday in Greece. Our smaller yachts with three cabins and space for up to six guests (or eight if two sleep in the main cabin) can be rented for as little as roughly 1200 Euros a week in the low season. Costs for larger yachts with up to 6 cabins and space for up to 12 guests rise to approximately 10.000 Euros a week in the high season.

At Istion, we proudly offer a wide selection of the latest models as well as impeccably maintained older sailing yachts from Jeanneau, Beneteau, Bavaria, Sun Odyssey, Hanse and other top shipyards. Whether you're planning a cozy trip for a small group or a grand sailing adventure for a larger party, we have the right yacht to suit your needs.

Catamarans are the choice for those who want lots of space and a stable, comfortable trip. With their two-hull design, they don't rock as much as sailing yachts, which is great if you're new to sailing or easily feel seasick. You can also get closer to the beach with a catamaran, as they don't sit very deep in the water. Catamarans offer a smooth and spacious experience, making for a relaxing and comfortable sailing holiday and are a very popular choice for first time sailors in Greece.

For families and larger groups, the bigger cabins and more room to move around on a catamaran make them a good fit for your holiday. The double hull layout means two families can easily sail together while each having their own 'private space' on either side of the main deck. Catamarans also tend to have one washroom per cabin, a feature all parents with teenage kids appreciate.

The comfort and space offered in a catamaran puts them in a higher budget bracket than our monohull sailing yachts. Our smallest catamarans with four cabins and room for up to 10 guests start at roughly 2100 Euros per week in low season. Our top of the line models can range up to 16.000 Euros plus in the middle of the high season.

We are proud to have one of the largest fleets of catamarans in Greece with brand new models from Lagoon, Bali and Fountaine Pajot among others. We invite you to browse all our catamarans and contact us for any guidance you need to help make your sailing adventure in Greece perfect in every way.

Motor Yachts

Motor yachts are all about luxury and speed. They have multiple levels with lots of space, including big bedrooms and expansive living areas. These boats move quickly, powered by strong engines, so they're great if you want to explore a lot of places fast and make an impressive entrance wherever you go.

Our motor yachts are all modern, with plush interiors and all the latest features for entertainment and entertaining. However, they do use more fuel and require a professional captain and crew, so there's a higher cost for this kind of luxury and speed. If you're looking for a high-end and fast-paced trip with all the modern comforts, motor yachts are the way to go .

Sailing holidays on a yacht rental is not just for sailors. It is for everyone seeking something more than the sea, the sun, and a sunbed. We provide professionally trained skippers for those who wish to rent a yacht and enjoy relaxing sailing holidays in Greece or those who wish to get involved and learn the ropes and the sails during a skippered yacht charter in Greece. After all, learning how to sail is easy. Depending on crew eagerness, our skipper will not only show how to navigate but will also provide firsthand knowledge of the Greek island destinations.

Skippered yacht charter in Greece - Sailing Heaven

  • need more experience and more confidence to take a yacht rental on their own
  • want to get familiar with the Greek waters (first time to Greece)
  • need a hand because no other in their crew may provide sufficient help
  • need a guide to be with them and show the best coves and secluded bays for moorage and/or swimming, as well as the best places in seaside villages to eat and drink
  • want to relax and enjoy leaving the helm and sails in the hands of someone who can be trusted

Our skippers are hospitable, friendly, discrete and knowledgeable about every destination and you will discuss together your preferences and plan your route. Choosing a skippered yacht charter, you also hire the skipper who will take care of the yacht for you and will ensure that you get the most out of your sailing holidays in Greece. When you select from our yachts for rent, keep in mind that you have to provide a cabin or berth in cabin for your skipper as he is obliged to sleep on board. Apart from the skipper’s fee, you have to also provide his meals either from the meals you prepare on board or at an eating place ashore. The skipper’s fee, regardless of the season and the people on board, is €140 to €190 depending on the yacht rental. You may wish to hire also a cook/hostess. The fee per day is generally 10 euro less than the skipper’s and you need to provide berth and meals as for the skipper. The running expenses for a skippered yacht charter are just like those of a bareboat charter (fuel, gas, water, meals, port/marina fees, etc.), plus the costs for the hired crew as above. Although some of our yacht rentals are offered only skippered (yacht charter prices include skipper’s fee), you may choose any of our bareboat charter yachts fitting your needs and let us know if you wish to have a skipper (select the check-box on the form of the yacht rental booking request).

The Greek unspoiled coastline and offshore islands have so many spectacular spots to visit that it is a natural start to any itinerary. Skippered yacht charter in Greece is all about your own private cruise where you can plan your own itinerary and visit exactly the places and attractions you want, from some of the world’s few truly iconic destinations to serene coves that are not accessible by land.

Western Mediterranean vs. Eastern Mediterranean cruises: Which itinerary will I like more?

T he Mediterranean is the top cruising region in Europe, but ships rarely traverse the entire sea in a weeklong sailing. That means you have to choose between Western Mediterranean cruises sailing dream itineraries to Spain, Italy and France and Eastern Mediterranean cruises to the sundrenched Greek isles and Turkey or Croatia.

The itineraries do have many similarities, and both will get you to a greatest-hits list of sites in the ancient world. But only you can decide if you'd rather step back into history at the Roman Colosseum or learn about ancient Greece at the jaw-dropping Parthenon in Athens.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Throughout the Mediterranean, culture vultures will find themselves with a wonderland of choices. Stop by world-class museums or indulge in some of the best shopping anywhere (Gucci! Turkish rugs!). The whole region is full of foodie delights, whether you crave escargot, paella or moussaka.

Dive deep with this look at the specific differences of Western Mediterranean versus Eastern Mediterranean cruises to decide where to go first.

Cruise itineraries

Mediterranean cruise itineraries vary in length, but the ports are close enough that you can pack a lot into a week.

In the Western Mediterranean, you can hit Spain, France and Italy on a one-week cruise between Barcelona and Civitavecchia, Italy (the port for Rome), or on a round trip from Barcelona or Rome — all popular routes. Big-ship itineraries may feature a different port every day. Small ships might focus on a specific area, such as the legendary Italian and French rivieras, with an overnight in Monte Carlo, Monaco, so you can pretend you are James Bond at the Grand Casino.

Longer itineraries of 10 and 12 days add relaxing time at sea and may add more overnight visits in ports, giving you time to check out the local nightlife.

All the major big-ship cruise lines sail the Western Mediterranean, sometimes debuting new ships on this route even before they arrive in the Caribbean.

Eastern Mediterranean cruises for a week or more embark from ports such as Piraeus, Greece (for Athens); Istanbul; and Venice, Italy (or nearby Italian ports). A weeklong itinerary from Athens may concentrate exclusively on the Greek isles or combine the Greek isles with a visit to Kusadasi, Turkey, the gateway to the amazing ancient site of Ephesus, where Mark Antony and Cleopatra may have once traversed the still-intact marble streets.

A one-week Eastern Mediterranean cruise from a port near Venice may combine Greece with port calls in Croatia such as Dubrovnik, the walled city famous even before it doubled for the fictional King's Landing on HBO's "Game of Thrones."

Small luxury ships and sailing yachts explore Greek islands, combining popular places such as Santorini and Mykonos with hidden gems. Longer Eastern Mediterranean itineraries may include the Greek mainland and go as far Turkey, Cyprus, Egypt and Israel.

Both Eastern and Western Mediterranean cruises are most popular in summer, especially with the family crowd. Bargain hunters should look for deals in early spring and late fall. Fares are especially cheap in winter, when routes are limited but European lines such as Costa Cruises and MSC Cruises operate in the Western Mediterranean with highly reduced fares.

Ports of call

Here is a sampling of ports of call to help you decide whether an Eastern or Western Mediterranean route is best for you.

On a Western Mediterranean cruise, you're likely to visit Rome, the Eternal City, with such sites as the Vatican and the Sistine Chapel, the ancient Colosseum, and the Forum. Another popular port is Barcelona, where you may see the fanciful modernism architecture of Antoni Gaudí, including his still-unfinished cathedral, and visit the Picasso Museum to see that artist's early works.

Other Western Mediterranean port calls in Italy may include Naples, the birthplace of pizza. From Naples, you can venture to the ancient city of Pompeii or follow the rich and famous to the island of Capri. From Livorno, you have several destination choices. Head to Florence, with its Renaissance treasures such as Michelangelo's "David" statue, or visit such nearby sites as the Leaning Tower of Pisa or the gorgeous Tuscan countryside.

In France, you may visit Marseilles, gateway to Provence, with its vineyards, olive groves and lavender fields. Or you may stop along the French Riviera, where the gorgeous coastline inspired artists, or dock among the superyachts in Monaco.

Eastern Mediterranean itineraries vary more widely. You'll likely explore Greece, with its breathtaking coastline and islands, none more impressive than Santorini, where you sail into a sunken caldera and view whitewashed villages clinging to hillsides 1,000 feet above the sea. Other highlights include Mykonos, with its colorful homes and beaches, and other Greek islands that look like scenes from the "Mamma Mia!" movies.

In Athens, you'll see the hilltop Acropolis with the magnificently columned Parthenon, the temple dedicated to the goddess Athena, and may stop by the modern Acropolis Museum, home to breathtaking ancient treasures. Also on the Greek mainland, you may stop in Katakolon, a tiny fishing village (with a nice long beach) that's the gateway to ancient Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympics.

Some itineraries combine Greece and Croatia, with a port call in Dubrovnik and sometimes other towns on the crystal-clear Adriatic Sea.

If your itinerary includes Turkey, you can check Istanbul's Blue Mosque and Grand Bazaar off your bucket list. From Kusadasi, you can tour the ancient ruins of Ephesus and visit sites related to the Virgin Mary.

Shore excursions and activities

No matter which Mediterranean itinerary you choose, you should budget for tours and activities. Shore excursions on both routes will get you to UNESCO World Heritage Sites galore.

At the ancient Greek and Roman sites found on either itinerary, expert guides can help you understand the history and take you to the key attractions (while skipping the lesser ones). You'll appreciate their direction, especially in summer when you may be touring in intense heat and with large crowds.

At museums, especially in the Western Mediterranean, being on a tour helps you cut lines. You'll appreciate this at such popular places as the Sistine Chapel and Colosseum.

In both the Western and Eastern Mediterranean, key attractions may not be near the port — meaning if you explore on your own, you will have to deal with the hassle of finding transportation. Civitavecchia is about 45 miles from Rome; Piraeus is easier, at only 6 miles from Athens.

Related: Best Mediterranean cruise shore excursions

If you are a DIY type, look for "On Your Own" excursion opportunities, which basically provide transportation and a few hours to do your own thing before returning to the drop-off spot. Rome is a prime spot for this.

You will find tour options specifically focused on food, wine and art; the Western Mediterranean has the edge over the Eastern in this department. In the Eastern Mediterranean, you may find more options for excursions to beaches if you need a respite from hardcore sightseeing.

In either part of the region, try to reserve time in the towns and cities to wander and enjoy the outdoor cafes, where you can sample the local cuisine, people-watch and dive into the culture. Chatting with friendly locals while eating mezes on a Greek island, tapas in a Spanish city or the perfect bowl of pasta in an Italian town may be a highlight of your trip.

Bottom line

Both Eastern Mediterranean and Western Mediterranean itineraries are entrancing, from the moment you take in the gorgeous coastline views to the moment you gasp at a sight you've only dreamed about seeing.

For a focus on ancient sites, plus options for beach time, choose the Eastern Mediterranean. If you want high culture with your history, opt for the Western Mediterranean.

When it comes down to choosing the Western Mediterranean versus Eastern Mediterranean for your next cruise, ultimately you can't go wrong with either choice.

Why charter a yacht and sail the Eastern Peloponesse?

This area of the Argolic Gulf is ideal for sailing and cruising, especially during the summer months when northwesterly thermal winds dominate. Sailors can expect winds of 3-5 beaufort (around 7 to 20 knots) that begin around noon and cease at sunset. We believe these four destinations in East Peloponnese will make your next sailing vacation really special.

Sailing tips, Sailing destinations near Athens - nafplio

The city of Nafplio often plays host to exciting festivals and concerts, so keep an eye on the town’s festival calendar.

The Port of Nafplio and Marina Conditions

Nearby Attractions and Beaches

There are many beaches near Nafplio. We can recommend Karathonas Beach, Arvanitia Beach, Drepanos Beach, Tolo Beach, Psili Ammos Beach, Vivari Beach, Candia Beach, Agios Nikolaos Beach. Check out your chart as many of these are best reached by sailing boat.

Why visit Astros?

If you’re looking for a safe, ample harbor, a beautiful beach and fantastic Greek food, then check out Astros Kynourias, known simply as “Astros.” The town owes its name (which in Greek means star) to the star- shaped hill located on its northern side. The locals call this hill “The Island”. Those who make the short climb up to the top of the hill with its medieval fortress, will be rewarded with a magnificent view of the town and surrounding region.

Across from the harbor is a beautiful beach that is bordered by dozens of traditional tavernas. Once you’ve docked for the night, take a short walk over to the beach and enjoy the scenery. In the area around Astros there are countless beaches that stretch along the 10 kilometers of coastline which runs from the harbor to the port of Agios Andreas. The area is known for its white sand and pebble beaches.

Marina Conditions

The harbor is a large, modern marina with excellent amenities where you can moor your monohull or catamaran. There is water and ample shorepower connections. The marina is wide and clean. Shoreside facilities are good and there are several mini-markets in the harbor where you can find fresh, good quality products from the local area. Water for yachts is available on the dock and the water authority visits the marina each morning. Fuel can be found by calling the phone numbers posted on various signs along the dock.

Tyros

Why visit Tyros?

Fournake, Tyros

Nearby Attractions

Tyros is a beautiful coastal village to include in your sailing itinerary, with beaches, restaurants and cafes. But it is also perched right on the edge of one of the largest National Parks in Greece, The Ecological Park Of Parnonas-Moustos.

The Port of Tyros is new and safe, but quite compact. The edges of the marina are shallow and there is a large presence of traditional working fishing boats.

While shoreside facilities are somewhat limited, there is a mini-market about 200 meters away from the harbor where you can find fresh, good quality products from this fertile area as well as some basic supplies. Water for yachts is available on the dock and someone from the municipality visits the marina every morning to assist with access. Fuel can be found by calling the phone numbers that are hanging on various signs or by asking restaurants in the harbor.

4. Leonidion of Laconia (known as “Plaka”)

plaka, Leonidio

Why visit Plaka?

Leonidio, more commonly known as “Plaka,” was named after the chapel of Saint Leonidas. One of the most striking things about Plaka is the imposing red rock that stands above the small town. Today, the town  attracts rock climbers from around the world who come to scale the cliffs. An adventurous activity to add to your yacht charter in Greece, if you are so inclined.

Nearby Attractions and Events

A traditional feast that takes place during the summer months is the eggplant feast. There is a competition to see who can create the best eggplant based dish and competitors come from all over Greece and even from abroad.

Leonidio beach

 Marina Conditions

The picturesque harbor is surrounded by a small seaside settlement and a nice sandy beach. A freshwater stream from the mountain pours into the marina, too. Shoreside facilities are limited, but there are two mini-market at the harbor where you can find fresh, good quality produce from the surrounding area. In addition to wine and other basic supplies, you can find fresh bread brought from the upper city of Leonidio each morning.

Water for yachts is available on the dock. Someone from the municipality comes to the dock every morning and evening to help yachts access water. As in many yachting destinations in Greece, fuel can be found either by calling the phone numbers that are hanging on various signs along the quay or asking the port authorities.
