Fraglia Vela Riva
The Fraglia Vela Riva sailing centre boasts a small, private port with garaging facilities for 60 boats, a terrace overlooking the lake, office premises, a bar and a restaurant. Its position on the North of Lake Garda and the wind blowing both from North and South, make it a perfect venue for a regatta. Top level national and international regattas are hosted at the sailing club. Sailing classes for kids (school age) and adults are held at the club in the summertime.

The winds of Lake Garda
Sailing on Lake Garda is an experience that’s definitely worth doing, because this huge lake is perfect for sailing lovers!
Let’s start with the unique panorama sailors can enjoy – a magnificent landscape, with green mountains, beautiful rocky walls and distant snow-capped peaks. However, its winds are the reason why Lake Garda is truly special – and if you think it couldn’t possibly get any better, remember we are talking about regular winds , making sailing trips fun and adrenaline-pumping year round! Waves are never high, and the lake waters are suitable for both experts and beginner sailors.
What are these regular winds that make Lake Garda famous among sailors? From the late morning until late afternoon, the waters of the lake are ruffled by the Ora , which blows from south to north. In the opposite direction, and therefore towards the south, we find the Pelér , blowing from dawn until noon.
To sum up, it’s no coincidence that Lake Garda is known as one of the best and most fascinating regatta courses in Italy! Would you like to know more about regattas on this lake?
Regattas on Lake Garda
Every year, from Easter onwards, countless regattas take place on Lake Garda, with both national and international participants. We are talking about almost 80 different events !
The Garda Optimist Meeting usually opens the sailing season, attracting young sailors from all over the world. Organized by Fraglia Vela Riva, it is the largest sailing event in the world for a specific class, the Optimists, intended for young sailors.
Fraglia Vela Riva will also organize one of the main events this year, the 2020 World Cup , which will place Lake Garda at the centre of the sailing panorama worldwide. In fact, this is just the first of many sailing events, with long-running regattas, as well as European and world championships.
We can’t fail to mention the Zoom 8 world championship, the European Star and 29ers tournaments, the Europa Cup Laser, the Neirotti Trophy, the Riva Cup, the Class A Open national championship, the Slalom world championship and many other not-to-be-missed events.
What about those who want to learn? Sailing courses and schools in Riva del Garda
To sail on Lake Garda you don’t necessarily need to be a skilled sailor – quite the opposite, in fact! As we said before, the waters of the lake are perfect for beginners. For this reason, there are many sailing schools that offer courses at all levels , from beginner to competition level.
The Italian Naval League, Sailing Du Lac, GC32, Fraglia Vela Riva and l’Arché are just some of the main sailing schools in Riva del Garda, ready to show you all the tricks to have fun and improve your performance in the exceptional scenery of Lake Garda.
Let’s take Sailing Du Lac for example – our nearby Residence (5 minutes on foot) has a special agreement with them. They organize courses for children and adults, from beginners to experts, on dinghies, catamarans and many more.

Where to find it
We are on the northern shore of Lake Garda, 50 kilometres from Trento. Riva del Garda has about 17,000 inhabitants, and is located at 65 metres above sea level. The town and its surrounding areas are so full of olive trees, lemon trees, and palms, that it is almost like being near the sea, but the mountains in the background remind us that we are not far from the Dolomites of Trentino.
First of all, you must stop at Rocca di Riva , home of the Museo dell’Alto Garda, and a Picture Gallery: dating back to 1124, the Rocca is home to artefacts dating back to prehistoric and Medieval times, all the way to the present day. In winter, at the Rocca, you will find the Casa di Babbo Natale [Home of Santa Claus], a true joy for children.
Continuing the tour, on foot, of the historical centre with its buildings in Lombardy-Veneto style, you will then reach and climb the Torre Aponale , 34 metres tall and located on Piazza 3 Novembre, the heart of the town. At the top of the tower, you will see the symbol of Riva, the Anzolim, a bronze angel. Another typical area of Riva is the Marocco district, where you will find truly picturesque views.
If, in addition to the cultural aspect, you are here for an active holiday, on the lake you can practise sailing and windsurfing, as well as walking, mountain biking, rock climbing, vie ferrate and canyoning in the vicinity: Riva del Garda is a true open-air gymnasium.
Another attraction in the area is the Varone waterfall , with the Parco Grotta Cascata Varone, a popular tourist destination owing to the picturesque 100-metre waterfall in the Magnone river, fed by the waters of Lake Tenno.
How to get there
Those travelling by car , from motorway A22 del Brennero, can exit at Rovereto Sud and follow directions for Riva del Garda. Those travelling by train can stop at the station in Rovereto and, from there, take a bus connecting the town to the lake and to the town of Riva.

Victory for “1 Quick 1” in Riva del Garda….
SUI 318 Champions of Riva del Garda, Charles Nankin, Joao Vidinha & Wolf Waschkuhn
The Italian Grand Prix (our 1st European Grade 1 regatta of 2024) took place on beautiful Lake Garda, hosted by the Fraglia Vela Riva Yacht Club from May 1st to 4th. It was fantastic turn out of 36 boats which included 12 Corinthian teams, showing the popularity of this iconic venue. It’s worth noting that at the same time 26 teams were racing in Douarnenez, 12 Dragons were sailing the Palma Vela, Mallorca and 4 more Dragons were out racing in Antigua… What a Class. 🙂
The host club of Fraglia Vela Riva is situated at the Northern end of this picturesque lake, with stunning backdrops everywhere you look. Unfortunately, the usual “thermal” Peler (North) & Ora (South) winds were somewhat missing at the beginning of the regatta as conditions were overcast with some rain. This meant the opening 4 races were sailed in fairly testing winds and the Race Committee led by Antonio Micillo did an excellent job keeping the fleet happy and competitive during the difficult conditions.

Of these opening 4 races, SUI 318 took race 1, GER 1207 race 2, DEN 423 race 3 & SWE 409 race 4. Race 5 was started in a solid northerly wind and all was well until the bottom gate first time, it was apparent the wind was dropping so it was decided to shorten the race at Mark 1 after the second upwind leg. The race was convincingly won by JPN 56 Peter Gilmour crewed by his Son Sam & Yaji Yasuhiro, but unfortunately as the wind continued to die away only 14 teams managed to finish in the allocated time limit. This is not ideal for a Grade 1 regatta and I think we all learned a lesson for future events.
Race 6 was started after a southerly breeze filled in and this time it was SWE 800 Jan Secher who took the bullet helming his beautiful teak decked “Miss Behaviour” crewed by Richard Sydenham & Gerald Mitchell. It was decided to try for a 3rd race and even though the course had to be finished at Mark 1 second time up, it was a fair race. SUI 318 helmed by Wolf Waschkuhn took his second race win of the series and moved him and his team of Joao Vidinha & Charles Nankin up to the overall lead.
Yanmar sponsored the Gala Dinner and a great time was had by all.
On the final day our wind expert Fausto (who had called it right all week) said we would have the “Ora” wind by 1pm and sure enough race 8 was sailed in the best conditions of the series. Starting in 12kts the wind soon increased to 15kts at the bottom of the course and up to 20kts at the windward marks. A perfect way to finish off a wonderful regatta in this much visited part of the world. The winner of race 8 was our IDA vice Chairman SWE 416 Martin Palsson who took advantage of the wind bend off the cliff at the end of the second upwind leg. Grant Gordon in GBR 833 finished right behind in 2nd place but it was SUI 318 “1 Quick 1” Wolf Waschkuhn, Joao Vidinha & Charles Nankin who took the overall Championship by finishing in a strong 3rd.

In 2nd place overall was SWE 800 “Miss Behaviour” with Jan Secher & 3rd overall was GER 10 “Silly Billy” with German legend Vincie Hoesch on the helm. Meanwhile the top Corinthian Team was lady helm Tanja Jacobsohn GER 1256, crewed by her Husband Bernhard & Jan Scharffetter. Runner up in the Corinthians was ITA 50 Marco Andrea Gerbaudo , crewed by Camilla Michelini, Andrea Totis & Davide Ortelli. 3rd Corinthian was race 8 winner SWE 416 Martin Palsson , crewed by Berra Johansson & Goran Alm.

In closing this was a fantastic opening Grade 1 with a full series of 8 races completed. The Fraglia Vela Riva did such a wonderful job to make us all welcome and provide a first class service both on and off the water. I would like to single out Giulia & Stefano who worked exceptionally hard making things run well ashore and all the Race Management Team led by PRO Antonio , with our Lake expert Fausto making the most out of the everyday conditions. J/70 Class Introduces the Corinthian World Cup

J/70 Italian Class and Fraglia Vela Riva have been chosen by the International J/70 Class as organizers of the J/70 Corinthian World Cup’s first edition. Scheduled between June 1st and 4th 2023, the event will be reserved for all Corinthian crews and will award the top teams with some spot for the highly anticipated J/70 World Championship scheduled in Palma de Mallorca in 2024. A choice that renews the international appreciation for the commitment of J/70 Italian Class to spread the “voice” of the J/70 world: actually, since 2014, the year of its establishment, it has been recognized as one of the most active and popular. A fact represented by the important numbers recorded at each event of the J/70 Cup and by the assignment of main international events such as the 2017 J/70 World Championship in Porto Cervo, in which over 170 crews took part, and the 2014 (Riva del Garda) and 2018 (Malcesine) J/70 European Championships. An event, the Europeans, that the J/70 Italian Class will also organize in 2024 edition jointly with the Yacht Club Punta Ala, already involved in the organization of some circuit’s leg. For the J/70 Corinthian World Cup, the class led by Federico Siragna will reactivate a collaboration of excellence: to host the event will be the Fraglia Vela Riva, already home to the aforementioned European Championship and of an event of the 2015 circuit, as well as, during the past July, of the final stage of the J/70 Cup 2022. Appointment which, by virtue of the almost eighty subscribers, registered a wide success in terms of registrations: numbers that are expected to be exceeded on the starting line of the upcoming J/70 Corinthian World Cup. “Being listed as organizers of this first event is the best possible recognition for what our association has done. I am sure that the relevance of the event, the fact that it is reserved only for non-professional teams and having chosen Riva del Garda and Fraglia Vela Riva as the venue will be the ingredients of a successful championship. Since this is an event reserved only for Corinthian teams and overlapping the already planned J/70 Cup’s stage of Riva del Garda, the J/70 Corinthian World Cup will not be valid for the purposes of the 2023 season. The circuit, of which we are defining some locations, will be therefore articulated on four events, as happened in 2022, and will end with the Italian Championship, scheduled between 29 September and 1 October: we have anticipated it by just one week to avoid any overlap with the iconic Barcolana” explained Federico Siragna, president of the J/70 Italian Class. “The J/70 Corinthian World Cup was born from the will of the International Class to increase opportunities for non-professional sailors and for the first edition we have chosen one of the most beautiful locations in the world” commented the president of the International J/70 Class, Scott Weakley. “The collaboration between Fraglia Vela Riva and J/70 Italian Class has always led to the organization of competitive and extremely participated regattas, which have brought in Riva del Garda internationally renowned sailors, Olympic medalists and a large number of sailing enthusiasts. We are therefore impatient to work together again, with the intention of delivering an unrepeatable event to the participants: this year, also thanks to the excellent weather conditions, we succeeded and I am sure it will be the same next June” commented Andrea Camin, president of Fraglia Vela Riva, the only Italian club to be awarded with the President Development Award, a recognition assigned by the World Sailing’s president to the most active and effective reality in the promotion of sailing.

“The collaboration between Fraglia Vela Riva and J/70 Italian Class has always led to the organization of competitive and extremely participated regattas, which have brought in Riva del Garda internationally renowned sailors, Olympic medalists and a large number of sailing enthusiasts. We are therefore impatient to work together again, with the intention of delivering an unrepeatable event to the participants: this year, also thanks to the excellent weather conditions, we succeeded and I am sure it will be the same next June” commented Andrea Camin, president of Fraglia Vela Riva, the only Italian club to be awarded with the President Development Award, a recognition assigned by the World Sailing’s president to the most active and effective reality in the promotion of sailing.
