Triton 48 is a 47 ′ 7 ″ / 14.5 m monohull sailboat designed by Iannis Triantafilopoulos and built by Dromor Yachts starting in 1990.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

Review of Triton 48

Basic specs..

The Triton 48 is equipped with a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel.But be aware that even though a keel is very good for speed racing, a fishing nets and the like in the water can easily make you into a troublesome situation.

The boat can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.77 - 1.87 meter (5.81 - 6.11 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

The boat is typically equipped with an inboard Yanmar diesel engine at 88.0 hp (65 kW).

Sailing characteristics

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Triton 48 is about 419 kg/cm, alternatively 2347 lbs/inch. Windy 48 Triton used boat report: High quality meets high performance

Our resident used boat expert Nick Burnham explains how to find a good Windy 48 Triton on the secondhand market.

“Overpriced or reassuringly expensive? Only you can be the judge of that” concluded our thorough eight-page review of the Windy 48 Triton. It was a fair question.

At a list price of just over £600,000 including VAT when new (but not including a plethora of options that included such basics as illumination for the wardrobes or warps and fenders to tie the boat up with), it did look a little on the pricey side compared to similar sized and powered boats like the Sunseeker Portofino 47 which retailed at a cool £150,000 less.

Add the incoming economic turmoil that coincided with the 2008 launch date for this model, which slotted into the range between the flagship Windy 52 Xanthos and the smaller 41 Typhoon, and you can see why the 48 Triton is a pretty rare beast.

On the secondhand market however, we can ignore that hefty initial price as market forces exert their pressures to reposition the price point, and concentrate instead on why exactly people were prepared to pay such a premium.

It boils down to that rare Windy combination of quality and seakeeping that keeps people coming back again and again. People like Paul Rouget, who keeps his Windy 48 Triton in the Queen Elisabeth 2 marina in Guernsey.

“The Triton is our fourth Windy. We started off with a Windy 800, upgraded that to a Windy 11600, then moved on to a Windy 42 Grand Bora. When we were looking to take our final step to our forever boat, it was always going to be another Windy.”

Step on board and it’s easy to see why. These boats are built to last. Just one small example — the model badge on a similar era Jeanneau is made of individual silver-faced plastic letters glued to the GRP which may eventually drop off.

On the Windy, the model badge is cut from stainless steel plate and affixed to the superstructure with six stainless steel screws. The whole boat is shot through with that same sense of quality. For example, virtually every single deck fitting is stainless steel, right down to the filler caps for the diesel tanks.

This is all very splendid of course, but of little consequence if it’s the boat’s only virtue. Fortunately, there are plenty of others, and space is, quite literally, the big one.

Built for exploration and adventure, TRITON, a 163-foot massive expedition yacht with full ABS classification, features a 31-foot 8-inch beam and 9-foot draft. Powered by Twin Caterpillar 3508 engines, the yacht has a 6,000-nautical-mile range at 13 knots. The Delta Design Group used their years of experience in composite construction to develop an advanced hull laminate schedule utilizing carbon fiber for extra strength and durability. To provide the owner the ultimate in sound and vibration control, the engines were soft-mounted. In addition to a zero-speed stabilizer system, all her interior spaces are floating.

The interior, also designed by the Delta Design Group, features a full-width master stateroom forward on the main deck with sitting room, library, office, his/her heads and expansive closet space. Hardwood floors accent the main salon and dining area, and an elevator transports guests from the lower deck to the flybridge. Brilliant features abound, including a large walk-in refrigerator and freezer, a spacious gym aft of the engine room, and ingenious televisions that flip down from the ceiling. Also of note, she houses an underwater camera in the bulbous bow and underwater lights at the stern to provide guests front-row seats for observing the ocean’s mysteries.

TRITON is equipped with a sophisticated dive compressor with Nitrox and Tri-Mix capability, and a dive platform at the transom for ease of entry and exit from the water. A state-of-the-art sonar and bottom-mapping system by Simrad photographs the bottom of the ocean beneath the yacht and stores the information as 3-D maps ideal for pinpointing wrecks or reefs for diving.

On the main deck, two 24-foot tenders are stowed aft, deployed with overhead gantry cranes. The upper deck is equipped with an additional three-ton capacity knuckle-boom crane to lift tenders or load heavy items onboard in port, as well as a helicopter-landing pad. The flybridge features a hot tub for relaxing, and one of two elevators takes guests safely to the crow’s nest for spotting fish. All outdoor areas were designed with ample room for dining and entertaining. With four decks of living and entertaining areas, this yacht has all the accoutrements necessary for worldwide cruising, deep-sea fishing, reef-diving—and high seas enjoyment—in the world’s most remote and exotic locales.

Captain Lik was incredible and we had an amazing time sailing accross the aegan sea during our honeymoon. The boat is great and had all the structure we needed. We really enjoyed our time, visited incredible places and had great conversations with Lik. Thanks a lot!

Captain Lykourgos is a very kind person and an able seaman. His boat is a beauty from the 90s, but very well maintained, and with a vintage touch. Sailing on the boat was comfortable, as the it is quite spacious and has almost everything one could ask for. With us being quite irrelevant to sailing and with the concept of the trip being a bachelor party, our main focus was recreation and simply having a good time. The captain was very attentive to our needs with excellent and clear communication as well as with discretion when needed. To conclude the captain and his boat are not to be missed if you are looking for a lovely and chilled time on the greek seas. We just had positive experiences from our 3-day trip to Poros, Hydra and Aigina and If I was to book a sailing trip again I would look no further. 5 stars! Thanks Cap'n!

My friend and I set up a trip around several of the Greek Isles with an effort to continue training in sailing as we had previously completed our ASA 101 and ASA 103 in the USA. Lik was both Captain and instructor and although it was a vacation, we also were able to act as crew on his 48' boat. It was an AMAZING time. The boat is kept in good working order and we had no issues at all. Lik is very particular in his methods, which I find common with boat captains. He does like to teach thru showing rather than allowing the student to perform maneuvers themselves, which would be one point of feedback. Give up that fishing pole, Lik! ; ) Overall this was such a fantastic trip and I couldn't recommend using Lik and his Agere sailboat more to explore the Greek Isles!

Power boat crashes into jetty, killing 1 and injuring 10

LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) — A power boat crashed into a jetty in Southern California, killing one man and injuring 10 other people, officials said.

The Long Beach Fire Department responded to reports around 9:20 p.m. on Wednesday that a 48-foot (15-meter) boat had crashed into the Alamitos Bay jetty, officials said Thursday.

Capt. Jack Crabtree, of the Long Beach Fire Department, said speed was likely a factor, with initial estimates indicating the boat was traveling at roughly 40 mph (64 kph), the Los Angeles Times  reported .

All 10 people who were injured were taken to hospitals.

No other information was released and the investigation is ongoing.

A jetty is a long, narrow structure that extends from shore into water.
