2001 X-Yachts 382 Sail Boat For Sale - www.yachtworld.com What do we know about this boat? 1. It is supposed to have a baby stay and check stays. The broker says they are there for fine tuning and performance but not needed if you don't want to. Does that sound right? 2. Build quality? 3. Accommodations for a couple or two couples for a week or two. 4. Yanmar saildrive? 5. What else should someone know about this boat?

We have an older (1989) X-342 and are very happy with the general build quality. The keel & rig are tied into a steel subfloor grid that seems extremely solid and as far as I can tell they did not use plywood as a core material. Interior work is nice (from the pictures, the boat you are looking at is beautiful below). We do have a baby stay and check stays but have not used them yet - my understanding was that they'd be most useful in heavy air. Either the V-berth or the aft cabin are big enough for a couple and I'd bet the ones on the X-382 are likely larger. At 6' 1" i have standing headroom in the center of the salon but not up in front. There is not much information out there on the X-boats. Nothing like what's available for the more common makes. If you find a good general source please post it.

Pretty boat. And fast with that 72 rating. Looks like it has been primarily raced. The deep keel would be a deal killer for me.  

I was worried about the deep keel myself. Looks like you are in LIS like me. Where exactly couldn't you go around here with the x boat that you currently go with your boat?  

Hey, I like X Yachts. Nice boats. However, I like the Bene 40.7 you listed earlier. The sails on the X shots are 10 years or more old. The sails on the Bene are newer. The Bene is bigger and cheaper. The deep draft will stop you from sailing into Northport Britannia Yachting center. Norwalk will be tough. Forget about Clinton CT, or Mattituck NY. Otherwise you can get about anywhere. Barry  

I saw the boat today and was very impressed. I really liked that it is fast but wow the rig is complicated. It is original and I can only imagine what it would cost to replace the standing rigging. Things I don't like. draft to deep rig too complicated tricky to get bimini and dodger setup right no gps no anchor windless Can't get behind the wheel without climbing on cockpit seats. Yanmar saildrive Top of budjet Has not been used in three years Things I do like fast PHRF 75 nice kitchen can be singlehanded from the cockpit. lots of storage not a 90's boat Seems well made under cockpit steering Did I mention it would be fast I think to get this boat ready for cruising would cost another 50k.

"Can't get behind the wheel without climbing on cockpit seats." I looked at a Bene First that had this issue. I crossed it off my list. Keep looking. Sounds like you are seduced by the speed potential. Look at something like a J37C. Lots of speed, available in shoal draft, etc.  

The X382 has discontinuous rod rigging and that is going to be very expensive to replace and expensive to tune. even if you do it your self it will be expensive in time. you can not tune while sailing and could take many trips up the mast to get the tune right. This boat may have a 75 PHRF but that is with a crew or 10 to handle all the strings. it is rigged back to the cockpit but not really a good shorthanded boat because of the very large mast head genoa would be a lot to handle and that is where it gets the speed. the boat will require frequent head sail changes for differing wind speeds. sail the boat with smaller jib in light air and it will sail like it is stuck to the bottom. It's a 2000 my wheel is bigger then yours race boat that the owner can not be competitive in against the newer planing hull boats that it would race against.  

Hey, If you're serious looking for a fast, comfortable, high performance boat, in the 36-40' range, from the early 2000's, you should consider the C&C 110, 115, and 121. I have sailed all three and own a 110. The 115 is very cool, basically a more modern, higher performing 110. There are always a number of these boats around.
