The Selene 38 Voyager Aft-cabin is based on the successful Archer design with several technical improvements like  Diamond Sea Glaze sliding doors, optional Seakeeper gyro stabilization, Li-Ion batteries, a new electricity management system, a sea-chest for easier maintenance, an optional water maker with high-voltage auto-clean system, etc… A happy and classy gentleman’s yacht which has been cruising in British Columbia, the Bahamas, the Greek islands and South-East Asia for decades already. This beautiful and charming pocket yacht has always been incredibly popular because of its unique layout which guarantees privacy to four people or two couples. Because of its moderate size it can be hauled-out by the smallest Travelift and accommodated in almost any marina anywhere in the world. Thanks to its classic lines designed by Howard Chen and the legendary marine architect Ted Hood, winner of the 1972 America’s Cup, the Selene 38 Aft-cabin model is, and will remain, one of Howard Chen’s favorite yachts. When creating this yacht the designers adopted the unique concept of the “Whale Back” hull, that was a trademark of Ted Hood’s designs. This is why the aft cabin concept has so much headroom and space in the engine room. It probably has the best engine room layout for its size anywhere.

While the Selene 38 Voyager Aft-cabin is a legendary yacht, she doesn’t compromise on modern technology and first class components, like the recent addition of Diamond Sea Glaze doors, improved sound-proofing, optional air-conditioning, generator and larger aluminum fuel tanks for extensive cruising. Howard says that the best-selling yachts of all time were the Grand Banks 36-42, but when their production ended for a while Howard decided he wanted to bring a high quality compact trawler back to the market. He wanted to build an elegant yacht with traditional timber joinery, leather upholstery, teak & holly floors, a spacious interior with two cabins and two heads, a cozy salon, a practical galley and safe decks. The Selene 38 Voyager Aft-cabin is an excellent family cruiser, or the perfect Looper’s yacht. A tender finds its natural spot on top of the aft cabin where it can be loaded by a mast and boom.

Looking for a downside to aft cabin cruisers? Some builders have had issues with poor ventilation. And only a handful of aft cabins provide great cross ventilation, making it an undesirable choice for owners looking to cruise the tropics, quite stuffy when journeying in the rain or even just when underway. Compared to other style cruisers, the aft cabin isn’t as popular as an express, sedan or even a convertible. With all the focus on the interior, owners are limited in its applications. 

Those looking for a trade-off when it comes to choosing interior volume over performance and outside space, this boat’s for you! You’ll cash in with an uber comfortable, extra roomy cabin area for you and your guests. But if deck play is the goal, this type of boat disqualifies.

The aft cabin’s high point is her ability to make tremendous use of her amazing full beam width, with its extra spacious, over-sized cabin. And with her salon, galley & dinette standing between the aft & forward cabins, family and friends can enjoy their own private zones.

Onboard an aft cabin boat you’ll get to enjoy a flybridge. Keep in mind, this boat will have those aboard climbing stairs or a small ladder to access her cockpit area and then more steps -again, to get to the helm. The central part of the boat, houses the engine — typically beneath the living room floor. Two models that fit this description are the Carver 456 or Meridian 408 - for example.

One other standout aft cabin beauty is the Bavaria E40 Fly which offers full displacement cruising and an aft cabin in a classy 40ft package.

Her D4 300 engine allows you the ability to cruise at 10 knots as opposed to hitting all record top speeds. Flat out she reaches 15 knots with 10 knots being the speed where the boat is most comfortable.

The helm is located aft in the wheelhouse and mounted centrally with the dinette seating stretching out ahead of it. The bench seat at the helm seats up to three people in face forward direction leaving the skipper at the center of the activities.

Not providing a huge amount of space to play with on the top deck other than the small spot of seating and table, the guests will be better fit to enjoy cocktails and bites rather than an expansive meal.

On her flybridge, there is a small sunpad aft. But —to get excited…take a look inside. This model offers the two-cabin layout, but —if you wish, you can separate the aft double into a pair of twins for more sleeping space or charter use.

Her twin cabin layout offers space and privacy. Both cabins feature comfortable double beds and ensuite access to private bathrooms. The forward cabin’s highlight is her split shower room and toilet.

Commencing from the forward area, you'll find a double berth positioned to the side, accompanied by storage lockers overhead, a hanging locker on the starboard side, a forward chain locker, an overhead hatch, and a Sharp color television. The space is well-illuminated and tastefully adorned.

Moving towards the aft, the guest head/day head is located just behind and features a VacuFlush toilet, a countertop resembling Corian, a molded sink, and ample storage space below.

Continuing aft, to port, you'll encounter the C-shaped dinette/settee, offering drawer storage beneath the seating, as well as additional storage above and overhead. The table is crafted from a dark Corian-style material, mirroring the countertops below the two windows.

Across to starboard, the L-shaped galley awaits, boasting a Princess three-burner electric stove with an oven below, a Sharp Carousel turntable microwave oven, dark Corian-style countertops, a molded sink with a single-handle faucet, a spacious Carver refrigerator featuring a top freezer, and abundant storage capacity.

Moving upwards and aft, you'll find an L-shaped reclining settee in light tan leatherette within the salon to the port side. On the starboard side, a coordinating barrel chair complements the setting, accompanied by a JVC color television.

Continuing further aft through the companionway leading to the captain's quarters, you'll encounter a Harman/Kardon AM/FM receiver, a Harman/Kardon multi-disc CD player, a central vacuum system, and ample cupboard storage. Additionally, a substantial hanging locker is positioned adjacent to the stateroom door.

The aft stateroom is impressively spacious and meticulously designed to optimize the available space. It features a double island berth set at a 45-degree angle, creating generous walkways on both sides. Nightstands with Corian-style tops are situated on either side of the berth, offering storage space below and above. Large windows provide natural light to the space, and a full-height mirror enhances its aesthetics. To the port side, there is a double full-height hanging locker, while to the starboard, you'll find a well-lit ensuite head with a separate stall shower enclosed by a glass door. This head is equipped with Corian-style countertops, a molded sink, a single-handled faucet, mirrored surrounds, a VacuFlush toilet, and an air conditioning vent.

Finally, ascending and stepping out from the salon, you'll discover a spacious dock box with seating across the stern, custom sisal-patterned carpeting, a hardtop featuring fiberglass wing doors, and a complete Sunbrella sunshade enclosure with convenient U-zips. Additionally, a wet bar with a sink, cutting board, and automatic ice maker adds to the onboard amenities.

Beneteau First 31.7

This sailboat has achieved the right balance between sailing performance and accommodation. This family of Beneteau’s First sailboats designed by the Finot Group is highly appreciated among sailors for their resistance and high-performance. The First 31.7 features a high freeboard, a self-bailing cockpit, and a wide transom. Her design is simple and efficient, provides enough room for provisions which makes it great for long passages. Moreover, the 31.7 model is the more compact design of the Beneteau First 40.7 model. Its large beam provides plenty of interior volume with a simple layout of 2 cabins and one head. The main cabin is in the V-berth forward and has approximately 6ft of standing headroom. The galley is situated to the port side and includes a sink, a stove, and a refrigerator. Aft of the boat is the second private cabin with standing headroom and a double berth.

Hallberg-Rassy 310

The Hallberg-Rassy 310 is a fast and easy-going boat with her simple design and her robust GRP construction which makes her great for ocean cruising. She is a 30ft monohull sloop and features a deck steeped mast configuration. Furthermore, it has a spacious and comfy interior including 2 cabins, enough space for storage, and an L sofa with a straight settee. You can find a properly maintained used Hallberg-Rassy 310 with approximately $160,000. She’s definitely included on our top list of 2-cabin cruisers/racers!

Moorings Beneteau 38.2

This exceptionally designed monohull is proven to be seaworthy, stable, and reliable for overseas sailing. Her hull design ensures excellent performance even under strong winds due to her wide beam towards the stern construction. Furthermore, she has a large cockpit area that facilitates walking, relaxing, and dining on the deck. Her interior is equipped with two cabins and two bathrooms and has space to accommodate from 6 to 8 persons. The galley has all basic amenities such as a refrigerator, an oven as well as extra seating and countertop space. Peterson 44

Moreover, she has dual-ended mainsail sheeting and the headsail sheet winches are adequately placed to the helm. The sheets are well built into the companionway bulkheads so as to facilitate the control of halyards and furling lines led aft to the cabin top. The galley and saloon areas are large enough to cook and relax and both cabins are bright and spacious. Lastly, she’s quick and quite responsive while sailing and adequate for coastal cruising with your whole family!

Bavaria C42

This modern and innovative Bavaria C42 won’t let you down in terms of sailing performance and offshore sailing. Her V-shaped bow hull shape with chines, the large amount of space, and robust construction are the characteristics that make this model one of the best 2-cabin boats on our list. Better performance is achieved due to the chines that ensure stability and direct feeling while steering. Also, the foredeck and side decks have enough space for a sailboat of this size and the hull design creates extra space below the deck. Test driving the Azimut Seadeck 6 in Venice

It was a hot muggy morning at the Venice Boat Show, which made the cooling sea breeze all the more welcome as we put Azimut ’s new Seadeck 6 through her paces out in the lagoon.

The 17.5-metre vessel is the first in a series of three mild hybrid yachts, a range that will eventually include two bigger flybridge models and a culmination of Azimut’s 20-year R&D drive to reduce CO2 emissions and energy consumption throughout its fleet.

Complementing the three 480 HP engines are solar panels that feed a battery pack to run the boat’s hotel load emissions -free for up to eight hours when stationary. Azimut claims this hybrid propulsion, complete with optimised hull and lightweight carbon fibre used in the superstructure, will reduce C02 emissions by up to 40 per cent over a year of average use compared to a traditional boat of similar dimensions. This is accompanied by a range of eco-focussed details throughout the yacht.

By the sounds of it, Azimut spent a lot of time refining the hull shape and this is perhaps the model's most winning feature. The Seadeck showed us how she can progress smoothly through from displacement to planing and be most fuel-efficient at brisk cruising speeds between 22 and 27 knots. “I am proud of what we did with this hull,” Iacopo Senarega, Azimut’s research project manager, told me as we gathered speed. “Of course, I'm a technician, so I'm naturally more focused on naval architecture, but I think that the range of speeds the owner or captain can choose while keeping the efficiency at the same level is impressive. Equally, the design, which reflects all this engineering work; reducing consumption, reducing emissions, and giving the owner a wonderful experience.”

The aft deck centres around what Azimut calls the ‘Fun Island’, a place “where owners can get away from their daily routine and live in total contact with the sea.” The stepped deck is fitted with eco-friendly cork that is not only great for grip, but dries quickly and doesn’t get hot like wooden decks. Cork has also been carried through on the handrail of the side decks, which is a nice touch. Fun fact: the core of the boat is made from recycled plastic, or to be more precise, from 15,000 plastic bottles.

Inside, the creamy white pared-down interiors, designed by Matteo Thun and Antonio Rodriguez, have a sustainable theme, including carpets made from recycled plastic or fishing nets. The open-plan main saloon features both a lounging area, galley and the helm station. A floor-to-ceiling window on one side gives you uninterrupted views out to the ocean and is fitted with anti-UV glass to reduce the need for air conditioning. A glass opening in the bulwark means you can still see the sea when sitting.

Everything in the galley is super-streamlined. No ugly kit here: the compact galley has an induction hob built into a tactile Lapitec worktop with only a few buttons to indicate its presence. The sink can be hidden away, the TV flips down from the ceiling and the fridge, cupboards and oven is tucked behind a ribbed light wood facia.

Below on the lower deck, there is a three-cabin, two-bathroom arrangement. The owner’s cabin comes with a private bathroom and plenty of storage. There is decent headroom, plenty of natural light and lots of space to move around, with a sofa tucked to one side. The VIP has private access to the dayhead, and while the twin is snug with narrow single beds, it will sleep two children or adults for a short jaunt. In smaller boats, corridors can feel dark and claustrophobic but this one benefitted from a strategically placed upper deck window.

So how did the Seadeck 6 perform? Thanks to her optimised hull and, of course, her Seakeeper stabiliser, she never once sacrificed comfort over speed. Perhaps most remarkable was how quiet the boat was at top speed (around 30-32 knots), with most of the noise coming from the water underneath the hull. Despite twisting the boat around a choppy lagoon and pushing the boat from zero to full throttle in under a minute, the ride was smooth; passengers sitting on the aft deck were sheltered and there was almost no spray evident on the hull or windows when the boat finally cruised back into port.

Azimut’s marketing blurb promises that the Seadeck is a “gentle way to live the sea” and the streamlined hull, quietly understated interiors and sustainable touches go a long way to tick that box. A stylish boat that delivers what she promises - style, and substance.
