30-Square Metre

30 square meter yacht

In 1907, the Swedish Sailing Federation established a committee to design a national racing yacht class. Previous handicap rules had tended to be very simple and boats had evolved to be very fast and extreme racing machines, which were perceived as unsafe and impractical. Recently developed other options were the Universal rule (also called ‘American rule’) and the International Metre rule, neither of which were seen as fully satisfactory by the Swedish Sailing Federation.

The committee completed its proposal the following year. It was accepted as the first Square Metre Rule: yachts were to be classed by their sail area which was fixed. In addition, there were minimum requirements for weight and cabin measurements. Four new classes were originally accepted: 22m² , 30m² , 45m² and 55m² classes. Soon, new classes were to follow: 38m² class in 1912; 15m² , 75m² , 95m² , 120m² and 150m² classes in 1913; finally in 1915, 38m² and 45m² classes were combined to new 40m² class. The new rule became very popular within the Baltic region; between 1907 and 1920, Finnish yards alone built some 600 Square metre rule yachts. During peak years, Skerry cruisers made up 95 percent of the yards’ output.  They were also exported to other European countries and the USA.

Description

Historical Significance

Oriole II was one of the first American designed and built thirty-square meters to race competitively in international competition. She was designed in 1930 by the famous yacht designer Lewis Francis Herreshoff for Elizabeth ‘Sis’ Hovey. Driving ORIOLE, Miss Hovey would become the first woman to race and win an international sailing event. Her purpose was simple, to race in Kiel, Germany and Sandhamn, Sweden to recapture the Marblehead and Hoover Cups in 1930, both lost the prior year to the Swedes.

While the American’s lost both regettas, Herreshoff relayed, ‘we had only one new boat on the team, the Oriole II, sailed by Miss Hovey, and it is said she proved to be nearly as fast as the best German or Swedish boat in this class.’

Oriole II stayed in the Marblehead area for many years after Hovey sold her in 1934, placing respectably in capable hands against larger Swedish-built boats. By 1994, she had been acquired by the Museum of Yachting in Newport, Rhode Island. The Museum completed a full restoration of the yacht before adding it to their collection. The boat was acquired by her current owner in 2006.

Later recalling ORIOLE II, Sis Hovey wrote, ‘To me there is no boat as enjoyable to sail or as enjoyable to look at as a 30 square metre. They are easy to handle, lovely to the touch, as fast as a scared rabbit. I’ve raced many different kinds of boats since (ORIOLE II); from J-boats, YANKEE and RAINBOW, 12 metres EASTERN and WEATHERLY, down to 210s and 110s and everything in between, and to me there is nothing to compare to ORIOLE. Correspondence with George Fisher

L. Francis Herreshoff

ORIOLE II was designed by L. Francis Herreshoff, the first major proponent for the thirty-square meters in the United States. In an article printed in 1931, he stated, ‘It is safe to say that they (thirty-square meters) are the most modernistic-looking type we have, with their long fine ends and high, narrow sails. They are in their element in a strong wind and rough sea when they make really phenomenal speed for their sail area. In the races abroad, when there is any wind, they easily overtake and pass the Six-Metre boats.’

One of the most influential and successful yacht designers of the twentieth century, L. Francis Herreshoff, worked for: his father, Capt. Nat Herreshoff; the U.S. Navy in World War I; and for Starling Burgess, before going out on his own. L. Francis was also a prolific writer and, in addition to numerous articles, he authored The Common Sense of Yacht Design, The Compleat Cruiser, Sensible Cruising Designs, An L. Francis Herreshoff Reader, and a biography of his father, Capt. Nat Herreshoff: The Wizard of Bristol. Herreshoff's writing influenced generations of designers and builders.

Specifications

Beam: 6’9’’

Draft 4’9’’

Displacement: 5,557 lbs

Oriole is a 30 square metre racing yacht designed by one of the world’s greatest yacht designers and built by one of the finest boat builder’s in the world. She is an open cockpit racer, with a dramatic swept-back mast, small jib sail and very large main sail. She has a full keel, with lead ballast. The decks are done in canvas and epoxy.

The bottom of Oriole is a white oak keel with lead ballast attached by bronze bolts. The caravel planking of the hull is mahogany. The planking is attached to white oak frames that are 1 “x 1” sided and approximately 6 ½’on center. The planking is fastened by # 6 copper rivet, and 3/16” bronze wood screws, virtually all the fasteners have been replaced in the past 12 years.

The mast appears to be made of Sitka Spruce, and made as a box section tapering of to a to a round section at the top. The mast is a ¾ fractional mast that has about a 1’ bend as well as a lot of rake to it.

Sail Inventory: 2012 Quantum Dacron sails. 150% genoa, 100% jib; main. Used less than 20 times and in excellent condition.

In a letter that appeared in Wooden Boat Magazine (WB-114), Sis Hovey described Herreshoff’s many innovations on ORIOLE II, ‘….he actually invented the roller-reefing gear, ventilated spinnaker, and Genoa jib – which were used for the first time on ORIOLE II when I took her to Kiel, Germany, and afterward in Sweden for team racing in 1930. Our jib was then known as the biggest biggest, and was copied in Italy and was called the Genoa jib. This bothered Francis, and I’m not surprised.’

Oriole II’s first, and most prominent, owner was Elizabeth ‘Sis’ Hovey, an early pioneer of women’s yachting who grew up racing in Massachusetts. In the thirties, the family name Hovey was widely associated with yachting and America's Cup history. Father Chandler Hovey was involved in the J Class and joined the Bostonians John Lawrence and Charles Francis Adam in the 1930 Cup defence with Yankee. Chandler passed on his passion to his two sons, Charles and Chandler Junior, as well as to his daughter Elisabeth, nicknamed "Sis".

While the Americans were romped in the 1929 Hoover Cup and Marblehead Cup, Herreshoff noted that a bright spot for the Americans in this series was that Sis Hovey, driving ORIOLE, became the first American to skipper a boat in international competition. Sailing ORIOLE, she placed respectably, edging out the Germans for the first place in the final race in Kiel, Germany.

‘One of the things that rather surprised the foreigners was that a very young lady (‘Sis’ Hovey) sailed one of our boats and, in fact, made the greatest number of points on our team.’ L. Francis Herreshoff

‘This year a return race was sailed in Germany and our team again was beaten. However, we had only one new boat on the team, the ORIOLE II, sailed by Miss Hovey, and it is said she proved to be nearly as fast as the best German or Swedish boat in this class.’ L. Francis Herreshoff

Of ORIOLE II, Sis Hovey would later write, ‘Of all the boats I was lucky to sail, including J-boats, Herreshoff 12s, M-boats, Rs, Qs, and others, my 30-square meter was the most fun.’ Wooden Boat Magazine (WB-114)

Correspondence

Copies of correspondence regarding ORIOLE written by Sis Hovey to George Fisher.

I once had the pleasure of storing my boat next to one of the square meter yachts designed and built in the United States. This was the L. Francis Herreshoff designed Oriole. Sighting down the length of her underbody was an experience to take your breath away. A vessel of this general type, with a fin keel and a bulb at the bottom could carry substantially more sail area than the old square meter rule would allow. Such a boat would fly.

Oriole is an ideal example how deceptive it is to judge size by overall length. She’s s bit under 40 feet from stem to stern; however, she displaces only 5,500 pounds – talk about a low displacement-to-length ration!...Of course, in return for this, Oriole has been reliably clocked at 12 knots – now that’s sailing!

Dave Gerr, Nature of Boats

Oriole’s original plans are available through MIT’s Hart Museum (8 sheets of plans for 30 square meter sloop, ORIOLE (built 1930), design #46 by L. Francis Herreshoff. Dates on plans range from 02-04-1930 to 04-13-1930)

Harry Becker SK 30 “Scarlett O’hara”

Scalett O’hara Specifications:

LOA: 12.70m * LWL: 9.5m * Beam: 2.23m * Draught: 1.48m * Displacement: 2.72tonnes

Historical:

Jonas Brundin is the Swede who came to Australia in 1992 as a business migrant bringing with him the plug for the 30-square-metre yachts, a Harry Becker design. He joined up with Garth Stewart and John Taylor with the view of building 30-square-metre yachts in Australia.

The three fibreglass 30-square-metre yachts were launched in 1993.

Pinchgut and Business Class (originally SAS Business Class) were built at Boatspeed in Gosford (which has since gone bust). They have a hand- laid foam-sandwich hull and deck.

The original Swedish hull which acted as the plug for the Australian mould was sold to Ross Wilson in Lake Macquarie. Ross named it Wisper. In 1994 Robert Skol purchased it from Ross, sailed it back to Sydney Harbour and re-named it Scarlett O’Hara.

The Australian mould was kept at John Taylor’s factory in Rouse Hill, but unfortunately, since John passed away nobody knows what became of the mould.

Scarlett O’Hara has had, and continues to have a very active presence on Sydney Harbour. She sails in multiple clubs and attends almost every big event on the water. The passion in her name describes her well as she is often flaunting her good looks with an invigorating experience for her crew.

1985 Classic 30 Square Meter

  • Description

Seller's Description

This is a 30 Square Meter sailboat originally 1932 design but built in the year 1985 as a replica in Sausalito with a fiberglass hull and aluminum spars.

There are 3 headsails including a brand new North roller furling jib. There is a full-size asymmetrical reacher that has been used sparingly. The roller furling is also brand new.

She also has an electric saildrive for power that is efficient and quiet. There are 4 batteries, lifejackets, flag, and other misc. parts that go with the boat.

The Square Meter evolved from a Swedish Sailing Federation Committee to design a yacht racing class that developed very simple boats that were fast racing machines of the day. Over time the sailing committee created the Square Meter Rule: yachts were to be classed by their sail area which was fixed and the race class or the 30 square-meter was born and very popular in the 1920 and ’30s.

She is easily sailed single-handed for weekend sails or regattas and can be handled with minimal crew. The boat has a small cuddy cabin that can be used for short cruises and has a marine toilet.

Own not only a gorgeous sailing classic but one that quickly glides through the water with ease. She is located in San Diego and was used by the seller as a daily sailer.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Selected by Duetscher Segler Vergand in a competition held in 1931. Sailed in the Melborne Olympic Games of 1956. (The gold medal in this event was won by noted Australian sailor, Rolly Tasker). Still raced in a number of fleets around the world (in some cases as variants of the original). In the UK it is the BRITISH SHARPIE or NORFOLK SHARPIE. In Australia called the HEAVYWEIGHT SHARPIE, and beginning in 1960, a modernized version called the AUSTRALIAN LIGHTWEIGHT SHARPIE.

Hansina

30 SQ METRE SKERRY CRUISER

There is no mistaking the graceful lines of a 30 Square Meter. With its long, lean hull, generous overhangs and lofty, slim-line Bermudan rig, it is arguably one of the world’s most striking classes, and certainly commands attention on the water. They are also known as Skerry Cruisers.

George Fisher has had a lifelong interest in 30 square meter boats that began on Long Island, New York, in the 1960s when his father purchased a Skerry Cruiser of the same vintage as Hansina. It was love at first sight. In addition to sailing up and down the Northeast coast on this boat, George began to collect documents and stories of the other Swedish-built Skerry Cruisers that had been brought to the United States in the 1930s for day sailing and racing. He collected letters and pictures from current and former owners, resulting in a historical archive of a unique period in American sailing history.

Hansina was designed and built in 1937-1938 by Harry Becker in his Rodesund boatyard in Karlsborg, Sweden. Becker’s history follows at the end of this.

The great Uffa Fox wrote in the 1930’s, “Of all the fast cruisers, the 30 Square Meters are probably the best.” He continues, “The Skerry Cruisers with their liveliness and buoyant hulls are a type that appeal to many people…for their rules produce a fast type of craft that gives a great deal of pleasure to those sailing it, and also at the same time they produce a very sturdy vessel, one that is both strong and seaworthy.”

Hansina’s ownership history is quite distinguished: 1938, Anne-Marie. A.Johanson, Sweden 1950, Nagala, Buckminster Fuller, New York / Maine 1962, Nagala, Fred B. Reynolds, New Jersey / Maine 1968, Nagala, Robert Kimball, New Jersey 1971, Nagala, William Kyle, Port Huron, Michigan 1976, Nagala, Ken & Penelope Peck, Port Huron, Michigan 1995, Nagala, Harry Levak, Port Huron, Michigan 2005, George and Hansine Fisher, Portland Oregon and Puget Sound

George hauled Hansina to Washougal, Washington, to Stan Bishoprick’s renowned Legendary Yachts boatyard where Andy’s team of highly skilled, perfectionist personnel performed extensive repairs and replacements from stem to stern and from top to bottom to bring her to better-than-new condition. The Fishers invested in excess or $125,000 to bring Hansina to her current state of classic grace, beauty, and strength. There are many photos of these extensive repairs, refits, and upgrades on the legendaryyachts.com website (click on “Projects”) and show the quality of the wood and workmanship brought to this restoration.

Following the completion of the restoration in 2009, Hansina was trucked on her own custom built trailer to Puget Sound where she spent her next years sailing out of Port Madison across the sparkling waters between Bainbridge Island and Seattle. Schattauer Sails in Seattle created a custom-made mainsail and jib, and a bright green customized spinnaker was purchased from North Sails in Seattle. In the winters she was “dry-stored” out of the water locally. As part of her “debut”, the marine photographer Neil Rabinowitz took hundreds of photographs of her on the Puget Sound.

In the winter of 2016, she was taken to the Seaview Boatyard in Seattle for routine maintenance and re-varnishing. She has been in the water since 2016.

Her latest improvement was the commissioning (and completion) of a custom-designed and crafted Sunbrella boat cover. It covers the full length of the boat with wrap-arounds for the bow and stern overhangs. The cover sports a full length 9 inch wide “skirt” which prevents any water from running down the topsides and keeping the sun off most of her beautifully varnished (Epiphanes) topsides. The new cover, together with multiple coats of green Micron 66 bottom paint has recently allowed the seasons of her enjoyment here in the mild Puget Sound climate to be extended year-round if desired.

See picture of Hansina at her buoy in Hidden Cove (Port Madison) with the full-length, complete cover.

George Fisher had Hansina repowered with a 10 hp air-cooled Honda which pushes her out of the harbor at 5 knots. This configuration allows for fewer through-hulls and easier maintenance. The engine is coupled to a state-of-the-art Max Prop for most efficient powering and sailing.

There are an amazing number of Square Meter boats still active around the world. 45 of them took part in the Square Meter Jubilee at Stockholm in 2008.

Thanks guy for the info. what I am after is if any boats were launched recently that fit the rule. There are a few modern classic looking yachts with fin and bulb and spade rudder but those do not fit the rule. Also they are not trying to exploit the rule (since they do fit in it anyway), the keep the sleek looks etc instead since their purpose is different. I have a lot of info on several old designs. The question is what would you build today if you were launching a 30 sqm for racing. It would be very different to the old designs, something more similar to a 5.5m perhaps. Thanks again for the info

Sorry for the bad display--something is not working with the "Enter-Return" Key: Fastwave, Go to the Swedish Association of the Square Metre classes: http://www.sskf.se/info/engindex.htm They have the most comprehensive information about Square Meters, and last year they published a book celebrating the 100th birthday of the class. This is "The World of Square Metres", and is referred to as The Jubilee Book. The book covers recent Square Metre class activities in various countries around the world. As for new designs, I have been commissioned to design The Scandinavian Cruiser 40 for Scandinavian Cruisers: http://www.sponbergyachtdesign.com/SC40.htm http://www.scandinaviancruisers.com/ The SC 40 is "inspired by" the 30 Square Metre. It does not follow the rule because my client wanted to add modern technology in the form of a lifting keel, lifting rudder, and a rotating wingmast into the mix. Also, the boat had to be shippable in a standard 40' shipping container. Those compromises through it outside the exact definitions of a 30 Square Metre. The Square Metre Rule was last updated in 2005 (that is the date of my version), so the classes are alive and well. The rule is fairly limiting in hull and rig proportions, so there is not too much that you can do to change features of the hull and still call it a Square Metre. I suggest buying a copy of the Jubilee Book and then talk to the SSKF to get more detailed information. I hope that helps. Eric
I have studied the rule in detail. All the new yachts launced seemed to be "inspired" by the 30sqm. They thus keep the smooth hull shape, narrow stern etc to preserve the old 30sqm look. The are beautiful yachts but If you were going to design a 30sqm today they would not be the same. So far I have not been able to find a 30sqm launched in the last 20 years (designed in teh last 20 years) Thanks for the info anyway.

I think the LS 30s built in Australia in about '89 were fairly new designs then. They had a "long" keel and attached rudder; I think it's mandated in the rules just as it used to be in thte 5.5sm.
Hi C249, I have tried to find some info on the LS30 but not luck. Do you have a link or some photos? Thanks

In production Another 30m2 is still in production in germany, it is perhaps the fastest one of all. Ther race version is 12.40 m x 2.14. It is constructed on the island of Reichenau in the lake of Constanze. They are produceds by Beck and sons (Soehne). They are living about 1km from my native familie and a worker of the stable was a friend of my grandfather and a saw the construktionwork fore many times and years. The were so beautiful tu see. Only when the Quartas, Tucan and Akros came in the 80's they were not longer the boat to beat on the see. but they are still fast and go very high on the wind. Best regards Pagodino

The Emperor’s Boat

30 square meter yacht

By Dave Matthews member of Finger Lakes chapter

Lancea’s documented history goes back to the fourth previous owner, Russ Balmer, who sailed her out of the Port Huron Yacht Club in the 1960s. Before that the history is murky but the last previous owner believed her to be the very same boat that was originally built for the Emperor of Annam (now Vietnam) in 1935. That boat is quite well known, thanks to the Swedish Maritime Museum’s collection of documents from the designer, Knud Reimers, and Chapter 36 of Uffa Fox’s book Sail and Power, “22 Square Meter Class”, which focused on it. From the Museum we have Reimers’s original detailed design drawings, as well as his correspondence with the Emperor.

Is Lancea really the Emperor’s boat? Her builder’s plaque says “Knud H. Reimers, Yacht Designer and Broker, Stockholm, Sweden.” Of the dozen or so 22 Square Meters Reimers drew, Lancea’s shape matches the Emperor’s boat as well as any and better than some. Whether she’s the Emperor’s boat or not, Lancea is a fine representative member of the 22 Square Meter Class.

30 square meter yacht

The Square Meter Rule is a yacht measurement rule created by the Swedish Sailing Association in 1908, based largely on sail area. It lent itself to graceful, narrow designs with long bow and stern overhangs and tall rigs. Lancea is 36 feet long overall with a beam of only 6 feet. Other typical characteristics are her tall, narrow mainsail; low-slung, broad genoa jib; and curved mast. In the first half of the 20th century there were racing fleets of 22 and 30 Square Meters on the Great Lakes and the Massachusetts coast, but the majority have always been in northern Europe, where they are still raced. Some great action photos of a 2014 race in Berlin are at https://soeren.zenfolio.com/22qm2014.

Lancea came to me ready to sail and I’ve done little more than refresh the finish. Her hull is Honduras mahogany, deck and mast Oregon spruce. She is close-planked and seals up water-tight without caulk. She sails with a nearly neutral helm at all angles of heel. With her narrow beam, she heels readily before the keel stiffens her, immersing the hull overhangs and increasing her waterline length. Currently she daysails on Cayuga Lake out of Ithaca NY. Lancea has given me five years of great pleasure so far, and it will soon be time for her to move on to her next owner.

Very cool to see this. This was one of my first big restorations starting off my career as a wooden boat builder in 1996.

Hi Mike! I’d like to get in touch with you about Lancea. She’s for sale now, and there’s more information about her early days in the comments below. Thanks for the restoration work you did. I’ve enjoyed her mightily. – Dave

Oops, sorry, forgot the address. I’m at [email protected] .

You ALWAYS get my clicks with the sailboats and this one did not disappoint! What a beautiful boat! If possible for the owner to see some follow up questions… is there an engine? Can more detail pics be posted? What is below decks? Does she stay in the water all summer? Is she covered when not in use?

Hi Shannon, There is no engine. She has a Torqeedo electric motor for light use. It stows away along with the motor mount when not in use so it doesn’t spoil the look. Below decks she’s very open, lots of storage space. The cabin has two long benches, could be used as berths. No galley or head. Yes, she’s at her mooring all summer. Winters are under tarps outdoors on a custom trailer. There’s no cover in summer other than the sail cover. I’d rather show her off, and deal with the ravages of the sun on the varnished deck in the spring. There are lots more photos on Flickr, https://www.flickr.com/photos/dematth/collections/72157647612707584/ And more details of the history (such things as Mike Corrigan’s restoration) at https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4YfhHvguFi2Mmx4ZHRscGYyRVk/view You can contact me for more information, e.g. by replying to this comment.

Dave: this is an old post, are you still there? I’m looking to track down Viking, US33. My great uncle’s boat from Marblehead long ago. I believe she is at Port Huron. Do you know?

Andy Chase [email protected]

I too am a sucker for old sailboat stories and photos, of which this is exceptional, particularly the link to the extensive photo album. Thanks for submitting this – the Finger Lakes have an honored history in the vintage boating community.

Being a teenager in the 60’s of a family who were members of the Milwaukee Yacht Club I got to be a first hand witness in the transition of wood to fiberglass. As the docks were filling up more and more every summer with new polished Columbias, C&C’s, Cals, Pearsons not to mention traditional one designs like Lightnings and Int 14’s going the way of glass, I was always fascinated with the 22 Square meter owned by friends of a friend of our family. It was on a mooring and kept in good shape. Whenever we passed it on our way out to the race course I found myself transfixed to its’ lines. On one hand it seemed so impractical compared to the 32 footer I happened to be crewing on. On the other hand, it had the most beautiful lines of anything that had a mast and for that one moment as we went by it, I wanted to be on that 22 Square meter instead!

In re square meter boats on Cayuga Lake, do you know anything about Robert Paccone’s 30 from 1971? He lived in Apalachin and worked for IBM in Endicott and sailed out of Ithaca.

Hi Kenneth, I’ve heard of a 30 being on the lake a long time ago, maybe it was that one. I’ve only been sailing Cayuga Lake since 1980. There haven’t been any Square Meters here during that time, until now. Sorry for the slow response. The system doesn’t notify me when there are comments. – Dave

David: I just bumped into your article about Lancia. We sold Lancia to Russ Balmer around 1962 after sailing this wonderful boat for about 7 years out of Port Clinton, Ohio. I have only one faded photo of 22 US 22 but great memories. cell 843 814 4077

Dave and Willy, I by chance found your article tonight regarding Lancea, my Dad Russ Balmer’s pride and joy for many years. I believe he purchased her in the mid 1960’s from Willy. He spent many Spring’s getting her in tip top shape at Port Huron (MI) Yacht Club for another season of racing in Lake Huron. I assisted him and sailed with him. She was quite the racing sloop! The boat was still in beautiful condition when he finally let her go to a buyer in Ontario. We were confident Lancea was in fact built for the Emperor of Indochina. That Emperor later replaced her with the 30 Square Meter, Moose, which also sailed out of Port Huron with us back in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. Lancea looks magnificent. I had heard she fell into disrepair sometime after Dad sold her. Thank you for having her restored and the story about her. D Balmer

Moose was John S(ilsby) Lawrence’s 30 sq m, 30 US32. It was originally from Marblehead (delivered at the end of April 1936) but later moved to Port Huron where it was known as Mairead (1949-1954). My grandfather raced against Moose in both 30 US40 Arista and in 30 US41 Ellen, from 1946-1947 and then in 1949. Moose was a Reimer’s design from the Motala Batvarv. Irwin Russel “Russ” Balmer owned the ca 1930s Lancea, but also previously owned US2 Diane, one of the first two 22sks in the US (in 1929). Balmer was a PHYC member for 55 years.

Hi Denny! Willy and I are trying to get in touch with you to find out more about Lancea’s early days. I’m at [email protected] , cell 607-262-0443. Talk to you soon I hope. – Dave
