While cruising offshore in the Achilles 24 was ‘adventurous’, the 9m was designed for long-distance, short-handed sailing and today makes a good choice as a cheap but safe and strong introduction to cruising. Despite having six berths the accommodation was cramped, with small spaces for the chart table, galley and heads. She had a fin-and-skeg underwater profile with a much taller rig, comparatively, than the 24 and could be raced competitively at club level. A 10hp diesel was fitted as standard.

Nimbus W9: the all-season weekender

Nimbus has always offered excellent, multi-purpose boats, and this time it seems to have outdone itself. With the W9, the Scandinavian yard offers a compact weekender that still provides all the comforts for a day trip and, why not, for a few more days. In fact, this 9-metre boat, in the “full canopy” version tested by us, is an invitation to stay on board and enjoy every moment, from sunrise to sunset and during the night with the right equipment.

When I went around the boat to remove the fenders, I didn’t have the slightest difficulty thanks to the presence of the handrails, positioned in such a way as to be reached without too many problems even by those who are a little taller than average. Thanks to the ultra convenient Zip Wake, we adjust the boat trim and we are ready to start our test and, above all, have fun. Yes, because this particular model is powered by a Mercury 300 outboard, which promises excellent performance and fuel efficiency. If, at this point, you are a little hesitant, let me reassure you: the top speed we managed to achieve (remembering that the boat was fully loaded) was 39.1 knots.

I didn’t want to believe the perfection of this hull, ‘it must have had a weak point’, I thought to myself. I decided to take it as a challenge, warned those on board to hold on, and began to make some timid turns to see how the W9 reacted. Not content, I turn all the rudder to the left, then all the way to the right and create a perfect 8 on the water. Nothing, no matter how much I wanted to take the boat to the limit, it remained flawless, always gliding smoothly even tacking and counter-turning suddenly at high speeds.

What’s more, the others on board were quietly talking and laughing during all these manoeuvres. So I decide, with a big smile on my face, to give up, slowly stop the boat and hand over the controls to a colleague. Back in place, I take out my notebook and write down my first impressions while driving: fun, comfortable and safe.

The Nimbus W9 in detail

The stern section house an L-shaped sofa with a folding coffee table, which offers space for several people, also thanks to the small sofa behind the steering position. Here, there is a very important point to be made: when folded, the coffee table leaves a handle exposed, which is useful as a handrail. To the left, we find a small kitchen, perfect for preparing the necessities for a weekend away. In the bow, accessible via the starboard side passage, there is a large sundeck. Below deck, a comfortable cabin with its private head.

Conclusions

The Nimbus W9 is the perfect solution for those who want to enjoy their boat all year round. Thanks to the ingenious design of the “full canopy” version, you will also be able to stay protected when you need to and open everything up when it is hot.

In short, if you are looking for a commuter, but don’t want ‘just’ a commuter, the Nimbus W9  is the ideal boat for you.

As buyers go crazy for outboard-propelled sportsboats where does this leave the luxury RIB market? There’s no better way to find out than testing a fully kitted out Cobra Nautique 9.2m in blustery conditions...

Twenty years ago my folks were on the hunt for a boat to replace their 17ft White Shark and had settled on a RIB . Their seaworthiness and practicality appealed but, at the time, it seemed as if most brands were still trying to shake off their commercial image in a bid to create something for the leisure market.

Enter Cobra, who were building RIBs with comfortable seating, convertible sun pads, easily accessed deck storage and a look that didn’t give off the emergency services vibe of its more straightlaced rivals. For this reason, they settled on a Cobra 7.2m with a single 225hp Mercury outboard .

Twenty years later, the 9.2m that bobs before me at Sandbanks Yacht Company shares all of those alluring traits. Granted there is a £160,000 price difference (that’s 20 years of inflation for you and the fact the Cobra Nautique 9.2m has an extra 2m, one more engine and 375 additional horses than the one we owned) but the design and layout is just as brilliant.

This particular boat, kitted out in black carbon-effect tubes and grey mouldings with contrasting diamond-stitched Silvertex upholstery in deep red, really did look the business.

Quite menacing from a distance with those 300hp Mercs stalking its transom but chic and inviting when close up, where Cobra’s expansion into the world of superyacht tenders is paying dividends in terms of how high quality everything looks and feels.

The elegant light pole on the stern, which incorporates a towing eye, and the decking atop the aft storage hatch are particularly classy additions. Of course, it should be a quality item given it’s knocking on the door of £185,000.

42m Bilgin motor yacht Kasif enters market

The 41.9-metre Bilgin Yachts motor yacht Kasif has entered the market with Josh Gulbranson and Jan Jaap Minnema of Fraser.

The steel-hulled yacht, with aluminium superstructure, was delivered in Turkey by Bilgin in 2023 and the broker said she is offered in "better than new condition". Her naval architecture and exterior is by Unique Yacht Design and the interior by Hot Lab .

There are five cabins accommodating a party of 10 guests, comprising an "oversized" main deck master, a full-beam lower deck VIP cabin, two double cabins and one twin cabin. There are quarters for a crew of six. 

The saloon features organic-shaped sofas snaking through to the dining table forward, separated by a pair of columns, and similar shapes flow in the deckhead, emphasised by recessed lighting. Hotlab has not skimped on any detail.

The extra-long swim platform and full-service beach club give direct access to watertoys or swimming activities. Kasif's large exterior aft bridge deck and bow seating, forward of the wheelhouse on the same level, offer guests a choice of spaces for relaxing and dining.

The sundeck features additional seating and bar for entertaining. The brokers pointed out that spaces are large for a boat of her size.

The 381GT RINA-classed yacht for sale is powered by Caterpillar diesels, with just 500 engine hours on them, giving her a top speed of 14 knots and cruising speed of 10 knots. Range is 5,000 nautical miles at 8 knots and her shallow 2.5-metre-draft hull stays steady, even at anchor, thanks to ABT TRAC stabilisers.

Lying in Bodrum, Turkey, Kasif is asking €22,900,000.

‘It’s like a battlefield’: 15 boats burned in Lake Mead Boat Harbor fire

The fire that started at 12:30 a.m. Sunday damaged or destroyed approximately 15 boats and caused minor injuries at the harbor, according to the National Park Service.

Henderson resident Rusty Schaeffer stopped by Las Vegas Boat Harbor on Sunday afternoon to check on his boat, docked just a couple of slips away from a line of the boats destroyed or damaged in an early-morning fire at Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

“It’s like a battlefield,” Schaeffer, 51, said of the damage left behind. “There’s like three or four boats that are still underwater that are partially sticking out. And the docks that come out of the side of boats are completely melted and, like, gone.”

The fire that started at 12:30 a.m. Sunday damaged or destroyed approximately 15 boats and caused minor injuries at the harbor, according to the National Park Service. The cause is still under investigation.

One person was hospitalized and another suffered minor injuries in the fire.

Dave Madden said he and his wife were about a half-mile from the harbor when he saw the flames.

“You could hear the explosions,” he said. “There was a lot of smoke and it looked like about 10 boats on fire at one point.”

Raymond Ward, 54, a Californian who has two boats moored at the harbor, said that fortunately no one was seriously hurt, but the loss of boats can have an emotional impact on owners.

“The biggest deal is that a lot of people lost stuff that they worked for, for many, many years,” Ward said. “You know what? We put our heart and soul into these things. We’re working on them every day. We’re rubbing them. We baby them. They’re our babies.”

“It’s sad to see some of these guys just lost their dreams that they’ve been building,” Ward said.

A houseboat owned by a man he knows sank after they bought it “a month and half ago and wanted to turn it into a family hideaway with his kids and stuff and it burnt to the bottom of the ground,” Ward said.

It was windy on the lake early Sunday morning and gasoline leaking from the sunken boats rose to the surface, Ward said. He said he believes that the wind was out of control and fanned the flames on the water.

Ward praised the owners of the marina for helping to move and save boats that might have caught fire.

Travis Reif, 54, another Henderson resident and boat owner, said he was “pretty shocked, pretty surprised that would happen. We wouldn’t leave our boats here if we thought that could happen, right? We had our boat sitting here last night and luckily it was far enough away to be unharmed. So, very fortunate.”

Boat owner Jeff Sammons, 55, said he rushed over to the marina at 2 a.m. from his home in nearby Boulder City to get into his boat and move it in case the wind blew the fire on the water toward his boat, which was four docks away.

“That could have been much worse,” Sammons said. “It’s life, stuff happens, but I’m lucky. But it’s in the end, just property. Nobody was hurt, seriously, no fatalities. Nobody was sleeping in their boat when it happened.”

Henderson resident Derek Jensen, 46, said that he has seen some boaters drain their bilges, or excess accumulated water from the bottom of the boat, with oil mixed in that spreads across the surface of the water in the marina, creating a dangerous, flammable hazard.

“So, you’ve got to be a responsible owner,” Jensen said.

‘Never a welcome thing’

Bruce Nelson, whose family operates Lake Mead Marina next to the harbor, said he helped pull boats out of the way while fire crews worked to extinguish other boats.

“Fire is never a welcome thing,” Nelson said. “We had our own fireboat to pull out the boats that were the closest. It started on one boat and jumped to the others.”

Firefighters started arriving at the fire scene at about 1 a.m., Nelson said.

Fire crews from Las Vegas Boat Harbor, the Las Vegas, Boulder City, Clark County and Henderson fire departments and the Bureau of Land Management had the blaze under control at about 3 a.m. and extinguished it at around 3:30, according to an email sent to boat owners by harbor boating operator Boating Lake Mead.

One boat owner was hospitalized with burn injuries and a firefighter was “checked out and released,” according to the company’s email.

“We are thankful to report that there are no known fatalities and only 2 minor injuries,” the email stated.

“Vessel damage is extensive but was limited from everyone’s quick action,” according to the email.

The I and R docks have been closed, according to the statement.

The marina is open to the public, but park officials issued a partial closure of the harbor’s R and I Docks and warned visitors to be cautious when accessing Hemenway Harbor and open portions of Las Vegas Boat Harbor because of potential safety concerns.

Killer whales sink yacht after 45-minute attack, Polish tour company says

A group of orcas managed to sink a yacht off the coast of Morocco last week, after its 45-minute attack on the vessel caused irreparable damage, a Polish tour company said.

The incident happened Tuesday, Oct. 31, as a crew with the boat touring group sailed through the Strait of Gibraltar. The narrow waterway bridges the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, which separates the southern tip of Europe from northern Africa. 

A pod of orcas, colloquially called killer whales, approached the yacht and "hit the steering fin for 45 minutes, causing major damage and leakage," the tour agency Morskie Mile, which is based in Warsaw and operated the yacht, wrote on  Facebook in a translated post.

Although its captain and crew were assisted by a search-and-rescue team as well as the Moroccan Navy, the yacht could not be salvaged. It sank near the entrance to the port of Tanger-Med, a major complex of ports some 30 miles northeast of Tangier along the Strait of Gibraltar. None of the crew members were harmed, said the Polish tour agency, adding that those on board the sunken yacht were already safe and in Spain by the time their Facebook post went live. 

"This yacht was the most wonderful thing in maritime sailing for all of us. Longtime friendships formed on board," wrote Morskie Mile. The company said it was involved in other upcoming cruises in the Canary Islands and would work to make sure those boat trips went ahead as planned.

Last week's incident in the Strait of Gibraltar was not the first of its kind. Reported attacks by killer whales that seem to be trying deliberately to capsize boats off the coast of Spain and Portugal have more than tripled over the last two years, according to data  released in the spring by the research group GTOA, which studies orcas around Gibraltar.

"Nobody knows why this is happening," Andrew W. Trites, professor and director of Marine Mammal Research at the University of British Columbia, told CBS News in May. "My idea, or what anyone would give you, is informed speculation. It is a total mystery, unprecedented." 

GTOA recorded 52 maritime interactions with orcas between the Strait of Gibraltar and Galicia, a coastal province in northwestern Spain, between July and November 2020. The incidents picked up in the years that followed, with 197 interactions recorded in 2021 and 207 recorded in 2022, GTOA said, noting that the interactions mainly affected sailboats. 

Then, in June of this year, one of two sailing teams involved in an international race around the world reported a frightening confrontation involving multiple orcas as they traveled through the Atlantic Ocean to the west of Gibraltar. The teams, which were competing in The Ocean Race, said the orcas did not damage their boats or harm crews, but recalled the sea creatures pushing up against and, in one instance, ramming into one of the boats. The orcas also nudged and bit the rudders, one crew member said.

More than 80 passengers killed in the latest boat accident in Congo

KINSHASA, Congo (AP) — A boat carrying more than 270 passengers has capsized on a river near Congo’s capital of Kinshasa, leaving more than 80 dead, President Félix Tshisekedi said Wednesday.

It was the latest deadly boat accident in the central African country where overloading is often blamed, including in February when dozens lost their lives after an overloaded boat sank.

A statement quoting Tshisekedi said the locally made boat capsized late Monday in Maï-Ndombe province along the Kwa River.

The boat was carrying 271 passengers to Kinshasa when it broke down due to an engine failure, according to the U.N.-backed Radio Okapi, citing Ren Maker, the water commissioner in the Mushi district where the accident happened.

Eighty-six of the passengers died while 185 managed to swim ashore, some 70 kilometers (43 miles) near the closest city of Mushie, Maker said.

He said the boat hit the edge of the river bank and broke up.

Congolese officials have often warned against overloading and vowed to punish those violating safety measures for water transportation. But in remote areas where most passengers come from, many are unable to afford public transport for the few available roads.
