Advanced Yachts 44 boat test – bonkers, but in a good way

  • January 5, 2015

Is this the ultimate plaything for the macho, Ferrari-loving Italian sailor? Toby Hodges tests his mettle aboard a high-performance weekender

This brave, brazen, brawny example of modern design is arguably the most contemporary monohull of 2014. How the Advanced Yachts 44 looks, how she feels and, crucially, how she makes her owner feel, define this flamboyant plaything.

The relatively new Milan-based outfit Advanced Yachts wanted pulsating performance together with style and some comfort for this design. Seeking innovation, it teamed up America’s Cup veteran designer Roberto Biscontini with the gurus of nautical styling, Nauta Yachts. The result is bonkers, but in a good way.

The muscular, supercar-like chassis, for example, would not lead you to expect a classy pad below. In this way, the A44 is rather like the Wally concept scaled down, yet more edgy and extreme. It’s a novel approach for a semi-production yacht line.

The A44 is certainly a very hard yacht to compartmentalise, which perhaps explains why she won the Special Yacht category in the 2015 European Yacht of the Year awards . She can be a high-performance raceboat, yet is still promised to be a fun cruiser manageable by two.

“Darling, do you fancy a weekend cruise? Great, hold on tight . . .” This I had to see.

Sizzling performance

We were dealt unseasonable weather for our sea trials in Santa Margherita. Enough rain fell to wash Fiat Puntos down streets and there was either too much wind or none at all. So although it wasn’t models in swimwear weather, we still felt quite lucky to find a puff while aboard the A44. During a brief spell when it blew 18-20 knots we managed an exhilarating upwind ride, maintaining 7.8 knots at 30°A with one reef.

What a sensation! Stable, direct and responsive, the A44 tracks beautifully. There is so much grip and control she cuts to weather and through the heavy swell like a sportsboat. I had expected a scintillating downwind sleighride, but the windward performance was a pleasant bonus.

She does heel enough upwind to give gravity frequent consideration though. Her broad beam is carried right aft, an area that is also left completely open. Trust me, 4.25m looks like a long distance to fall when you are gripping the windward helm.

The A44 is the type of feather-light, planing design that makes you drool for a downwind run. But just as we worked our way uphill to create the room to do so, the wind cruelly began to die. A tantalisingly brief spell in 12 knots when she clocked 9 knots plus under gennaker was our lot.

Designer Biscontini claims she can do 14 knots in 20 knots, flat water, and my fellow European Yacht of the Year judges who did find some sustained breeze seemed to confirm that when they came ashore.

After stable, sustained surfs in the low teens this is a yacht that can make you feel like her asking price – exclusive.

The A44 is the first production yacht Roberto Biscontini has designed in 30 years. His day job involves designing America’s Cup yachts. He approached the project with raceboat mentality, running 25 CFD models to optimise drag and lift figures.

The result is that the A44’s stats, including her sail area:displacement and displacement:LWL ratios, are off the scale for a production yacht – they can only be compared to a lightweight multihull.

She is built in epoxy-infused glassfibre, with carbon for reinforcement. She weighs just seven tonnes. A slightly more affordable vinylester version is offered for €500,000.

Minimalist, open-plan saloon provides plenty of lounging space

Minimalist, open-plan saloon provides plenty of lounging space

What’s a beach loft?

The Italians understand the art of lounging better than anyone. And the beamy boats that inspired the A44 happen to have space for lots of lounging area, according to Nauta’s Mario Pedol. “The cockpit and interior are comparable in terms of volume to a much bigger boat,” he says.

Go below on the A44 then and you’ll be welcomed by a comfortable ‘beach loft’ style interior – minimalist, with pale colours, lots of light and sofas you wouldn’t let children near. It also seems unusually spacious because you can see through to the bow. Opening out the bulkhead forward of the saloon is a trick Nauta has also used with Beneteau on the new Oceanis 38 and 35.

Aft cabin

During the day, this creates generous seating in a large open-plan area. A sliding panel is being designed to close off the whole of the saloon and forward berth to create a spacious owner’s cabin at night.

The A44 is a fast, fun and reassuringly expensive object of desire. She’s designed for couples to be able to enjoy sailing, but I’d like to see them try that in the conditions we experienced. There is a lot of sail to handle in a very open, beamy cockpit.

The difference between the marketing (below) and test sailing photographs paint this picture perfectly. Yes, a Gucci swimwear-wearing couple could enjoy a comfortable weekend in light conditions. But when the wind pipes up, so too will the testosterone.

The A44 is an animal and needs a crew to get the best out of her. But equally she does have the design credentials to help her compete handsomely on a racecourse.

Potential A44 owners (probably Italian) will be those who want to sail like they drive: as fast as possible. Park this plaything in any select Med destination and the ego boost will also rocket. Above all, however, the A44 achieves the ultimate objective of Italian design – she provides a beautiful feeling.

Roberto Biscontini

Roberto Biscontini

Roberto Biscontini – designer

You may not have heard of Roberto Biscontini, but the 57-year-old has been quietly designing America’s Cup yachts for 25 years, including Il Moro di Venezia, BMW Oracle Racing and Team NZ. He has taken a break from the Cup following the Luna Rossa cat for the last campaign.

“It’s so all-consuming and, with foiling boats getting smarter and smarter, I decided to stop and to do other projects,” he explains. Biscontini has been friends with Nauta’s Mario Pedol for 30 years and they always wanted to do a project together. The A44 is the result.

Advanced A44

Description

A unique experience in pleasure and performance.

The Advanced Yacht concept has produced a sporty cruiser inspired by light, modern and open performance boats.  Powerful waterlines and sailplan guarantee effortless planning and generous onboard space.

The Advanced Yachts concept has given life to a sports cruiser inspired by modern open boats, light and high-performance, with powerful waterlines that guarantee planing and large spaces on board.

One of the main themes of the new Advanced A44 is performance. Although it is not a pure racing boat, the water lines, the appendages and the sail plan have a clear provenance from the world of America's Cup regattas and the Volvo Race. The hull has a significant maximum beam, carried up to the transom, which gives the boat shape stability and less resistance at high speeds.

The keel, with bulb, has a draft similar to that of racing boats of the same size, in fact we did not want to compromise weight stability and hydrodynamic efficiency by using a reduced draft. There are two rudders for maximum control, maneuverability and efficiency even when the boat is heeling.

The sail plan includes a 'square top' mainsail which significantly contributes to increasing aerodynamic efficiency. Working together with the entire team, from the deck to the interior and structure, we managed to contain the weight of the boat to give the Advanced A44 the performance and sensations of a pure racer.

Sailing Boat

Shipbuilder:, boat description.

OUTSIDE LIKE A FERRARI, INSIDE A QUALITY DESIGN LOFT

The A44 is a weekend sailer 13 meter that combines advanced technological solutions and high performance with the comfort and relaxation of a large beach loft.

PERFORMANCE : the whole yacht is focused on delivering superb performance and fun under sail. Its light hull with variable wetted surface and generous sail plan guarantee excellent performance even in light breezes while the power of the sections and big asymmetric sails riggable on the bowsprit really do get the adrenaline going with endless, exhilarating planing. The A44 was designed in line with current regatta rules to ensure it can compete at international level and excel even in the leading offshore races where absolute performance counts more than any other factor. However, nothing was permitted to influence or condition its ultimate goal: the delivery of maximum sailing satisfaction.

WATERLINES : derived from research carried out in the design of the VO70 and TP52, two classes that epitomise the pinnacle of achievement in the racing world, the A44’s hull boasts all of the latest high performance solutions. It is the product of intensive CFD research, carried out using procedures honed in the course of a long America’s Cup career. The latter compared a plethora of different hulls to calibrate dimensions and volume distributions, including everything the boat would have in sailing trim.

CONSTRUCTION : only top quality yet never excessively costly high-tech materials have been used in the construction of the A44. The hull and deck are made from fibreglass sandwich with reinforcements in unidirectional carbon in an epoxy resin matrix. Lamination is by means of the infusion method with post-cure thermal treatment. Specific care was lavished on keeping weights down to ensure the displacement remained around the 7,000 kg market – an essential factor in guarantee that the A44 really would “fly”.

INTERIOR : the A44’s weekend sailer vocation is particularly clear from its interior layout. The volumes have been uncompromisingly optimised for short-range use with a host of solutions focused on making this a very versatile yacht indeed. The central area, in particular, was designed to be supremely liveable in both day and night configurations. By day, the whole space is open all the way to the bow, providing guests with a large dinette with central table and face-to-face sofas designed to seat generous numbers in a bright, area ambience with ample sections of the hull left free of furnishings. Nearer to the companionway is the galley which is compact yet boasts the usual array of appliances and a good amount of stowage space. Also here is a chart area with all of the navigation electronics, and onboard system monitors and controls. At night, when greater privacy is required, the dinette’s arrangement can be changed. It can be closed off from the rest of the boat via a sliding panel to become an integral part of the forward cabin thereby providing the owner with a generous, comfortable cabin space. Foremost the regularly-shapedalcove berth benefits from two large “sea view” side windows. Further aft are the second guest cabin, separated by a bulkhead and door, and the large bathroom with a separate shower box which also provides access to a wet weather gear closet and a very generous stern locker. The sleek, simple design emphasises the bright, clean horizontal look created by the pale surfaces and a whole plethora of lights. Meticulous attention was, of course lavished on the selection of only the finest luxe materials. Owners have a wide range of colours and veneers to choose from also.

DEBUT OF ADVANCED YACHTS A44 AT GENOA BOAT SHOW

advanced yachts a44 price

# Industry News

The newest sailing yacht from the Italian shipyard

Italian Shipyard Advanced Yachts presented the A44 at the Genoa Boat Show, which ended today. Designed as a weekend sailer for the Mediterranean, the 13-meter sailing yacht is exceptionally lightweight thanks to the hull’s sandwich construction. The light weight and sporty lines suggest a high performance, dynamic experience, yet it only requires two people to sail.

The excellent design is unsurprising considering the top notch design team behind the yacht. Roberto Bisconti, coordinator the Luna Rossa Design Team and high performance sailing expert, handled the yacht’s waterlines and technological aspects, while SP Technology/Gurit handled the structural calculations. Nauta Design, the ubiquitous Italian yacht designers, handled the interior design and overall coordination.

The yacht interior is specifically designed for short-range use with a central area that has a different configuration for day and night. During the day, the central space is entirely open with a large dinette and sofas, while at night, the dinette can be closed off from the rest of the boat to provide a spacious, private forward cabin. A second guest cabin can be found at the aft.

The A44 will officially hit the water in spring 2015.
