A Quick Guide to Budget Gulet Sailing in Turkey for Backpackers

blue voyage gulet turkey

You won’t find a better way to explore Turkey’s Turquoise Coast than from the decks of a gulet (a traditional wooden boat). But did you know you can experience a blue cruise like this on a backpacker’s budget? You can sail the stunning Turkish Riviera from Fethiye to Olympos on a 4-day cabin charter from just $260. That’s crazy cheap.

Imagine this…

Watching a display of shooting stars as you drift off to sleep, no noise but the waves lapping against the side of the boat. Waking up to the sunrise in a secluded cove, to the smell of pine and herbs and honey. Padding barefoot along the deck, bracing yourself for a dive into water that sparkles like gemstones. Afterwards, you plot the day’s adventures over a breakfast spread of tomato, cheese, cucumber, olives, coffee, bread, and jams.

The catch? For the cheapest prices, you’ll have to share a boat and can expect the facilities to be basic. Oh, but it’s worth it though.

Read on to discover why.

blue voyage gulet turkey

WHY TAKE A FETHIYE-OLYMPOS BLUE CRUISE

I used to be scared of the sea .  One of my first memories is of being on a ferry aged 3, afraid to go anywhere near the guardrail. My mind boggled at how anyone could think boats were safe.

A gulet cruise in Turkey converted me.

It was an ex’s idea. We were in Fethiye , heading for Olympos on the Turquoise Coast on the south-west of the country. A backpacker’s haven with treehouses and beach-side ruins, it has drawn hippy types for decades.

The scenic coastal route to Olympos would take a few days and a few buses. But in Fethiye, we discovered that a 3-night cabin charter on gulet cruise could take us along the same route.

This stretch of coastline isn’t the easiest to explore by road. Many of the villages and bays along this coast were inaccessible to road traffic until the 1970s and, despite the new highways, there are still many parts that are difficult to access by car or public transport.

What better than to drift lazily between them on a boat?

A cabin charter is where you rent a room on a boat with other travellers (I use the word ‘room’ loosely). Once I learned the price, I was sold. With food and accommodation costs factored in, it wasn’t much more expensive than making our own way there.

Any fears I had of water were quickly dispelled once I strapped on a snorkel mask and jumped into those crystal clear turquoise seas. The food was as good as a restaurant, but with a much better view.

It wasn’t long before I was a convert to travelling by boat.

WHAT IS A BLUE CRUISE?

Gulet sailing in Turkey refers to a type of  sailing charter in this southwestern corner of Turkey, typically week-long liveaboard trips along the stretch of coast from Bodrum to Antalya with an emphasis on enjoying the nature as much as the sights and towns.

Gulet cruises in Turkey are also commonly referred to as a ‘ blue cruise ‘ or ‘ blue voyage ‘. Same thing.

The gulet cruise industry is popularly credited to Cevat Sakir – the Fisherman of Halicarnassus  – a writer who was exiled to Bodrum in 1925.

He fell in love with the simplicity of life and beauty of the area, often taking his literary friends out on sponge-diving boats when they visited. Several books were published about these trips, and before long fishing boats had been converted for the tourists seeking the same experience.

WHAT IS A GULET?

A gulet is a type of traditional Turkish wooden motor sailing vessel, originally used for fishing and sponging. If you’re wondering how to say ‘gulet’, it’s pronounced more like ‘goo-let’ than ‘gull-et’.

Although gulets do have sails, you can expect to motor cruise most of the time. Since gulets became popular for charters, adaptations have been made to the design to make it more comfortable for living aboard but less suitable for sailing. They have roomy decks with plenty of space for al fresco dining and sunbathing, and are wide and stable vessels.

The downside of motor cruising is the engine noise. And if you’re looking to learn how to sail, this is not the trip for you.

But if you want to experience life at sea for a few days and explore the coast by boat then gulet sailing in Turkey is great fun and great value. Turkey isn’t the only place in the Mediterranean you can gulet cruise; similar vessels have cropped up in Croatia and Montenegro, but this stretch of coast is the spiritual home.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON A CABIN CHARTER

Most boats offering cabin charters have around 12 passengers and 3 crew, although some party boats cram on more than that. Your meals are provided on the boat and there’s ample room on deck for lounging around, sunbathing, playing cards. A bimini provides shade and protection from the sun. You’ll spend most nights at anchor, hanging out with your fellow passengers, although there are opportunities to link up with other boats if you feel like it (particularly at the infamous Pirate Bay disco). It’s a great way to travel for singles, although you find plenty of couples and friends on the cabin charters too.

The cabins on budget boats are tiny and unlikely to have (working) A/C, meaning it’s more comfortable to sleep on a mattress on deck. If privacy/air-conditioning/showers are more your style then check out more expensive voyages with higher spec boats.

Typical stops between Fethiye and Olympos include:

  • Butterfly Valley

Other hubs where you can start/finish a gulet cruise are:

  • Rhodes (for Greek islands)

The sunken ruins at Kevoka from a gulet

HOW MUCH DOES A GULET CRUISE COST?

So you think sailing’s just for the super-rich? That’s what I thought too. Having grown up inland with no particular interest or experience of watersports, I’d never given sailing a moment’s consideration. I assumed that it was out of my budget and didn’t see the appeal.

Until I tried it.

Cabin charters are the best way to try sailing on a budget

  • Cabin charters are shared trips where you rent a cabin rather than the whole boat
  • Itineraries tend to be fixed
  • It’s a great way to meet people if you’re travelling solo
  • Worried about sharing a small space with strangers? Gulets are spacious compared to standard cruising yachts

What’s a typical price for a gulet cruise?

The cheapest rates I’ve seen online for 2018 are around the  € 200 mark for the 4-day Fethiye-Olympos route, which tends to be the cheapest option. The higher the price, the better the facilities on the boat. 7-day itineraries start at around €3 00 .

When comparing operators it’s wise to check what’s included. Some allow you to bring your own booze, which can make a difference to your budget if you’re bringing the party spirit. Otherwise alcoholic drinks are sold on board.

Kaş and Kalekoy from the water

BOOKING A CABIN CHARTER ON A GULET

If you’re travelling in peak season (July/August) you should consider booking in advance in order to secure the itinerary/boat that you’re after. That said, there is plenty of competition so it’s not strictly necessary.

The benefits of booking when you’re already in Turkey are that you’ll be able to compare operators, get a sense of the other passengers and crew, and potentially negotiate a lower price—particularly in shoulder season or if you’re travelling solo and hope to avoid paying the dreaded single supplement.

Some people like to party more than others, so talk to the operators to find the boat that’s the right fit for you. Find out who else has booked, make sure you know what’s included in the cost, and don’t forget to check out online reviews.

Things to bear in mind:

  • You will be sharing a small space and basic facilities with strangers
  • Expect to sleep on deck under the stars, it’s too hot in the cabins unless you’re splurging on a luxury boat with A/C
  • Hangovers at sea are an awful thing

Speaking of hangovers . . .

How to avoid a party boat, if that’s not your scene:

  • The cheaper the voyage, the more likely it will be full of party animals who have lined the freezer with booze
  • Particularly so in the university holidays – July/August
  • Fethiye-Olympos (and the reverse) tends to be the cheapest route and most popular with backpackers and young travellers
  • Check the ages of other passengers when booking

Olympos beach

I loved the gulet cruise experience so much that I brought a group of friends back the following year.

It wasn’t my last sailing experience either, since then I’ve gone on to sail on a tall ship around the Balearics , crewed on a classic yacht, and been a volunteer crew member on the Phoenician Ship Expedition around Africa.

BLUE CRUISE

blue voyage gulet turkey

The most perfect and beautiful getaway that you can experience in Turkey.

We invite you to on board our Blue Cruise Gulet Yacht to unravel the beauty and bounty that the azure Aegean Sea offers. If you thought your journey is only about cruising on pristine waters, let the astonishing historical sites located in the Aegean and a host of other attractions amaze you. Our Blue Voyage takes you on a voyage to the Turquoise Coast and other natural wonders during the course of your journey.

For an enthusiastic and discerning visitor, there are several reasons for going on a blue cruise. Swimming in diverse coastlines, sunbathing on the deck and enjoying delicious meals are just a few of them. Blue Cruise goes beyond the basics and offers you an exquisite cruise experience. With the sea as blue as the sky, the sun shining 176 days a year and a history that dates back to 8,000 B.C., embark on a journey that will not only please your senses but also take you on an intellectual voyage.

With Blue Cruise, you can see a number of sites on the go, each being a rich source of fun and knowledge. This trip is routed on the ‘Blue Road’ – followed by fishermen, sea cargo men and traders in the bygone years – spanning a large area of about 350 nautical miles between Kusadasi in the Aegean Sea and Antalya in the Mediterranean Sea. Since an average trip spanning 1-2 weeks is insufficient to cover the vast expanse, a Blue Cruise is typically split into two.

Make your itinerary extra special this holiday season by going on a Blue Cruise that will rejuvenate your senses and help you connect with nature and history. A welcoming captain and friendly crew will ensure that you relax and enjoy yourself to the fullest on this amazingly stunning Blue Cruise!

The Blue Cruise starts here!

Blue Cruise Routes in Turkey

Bodrum is the main city that boasts of many tours. The typical route goes through the Gulf of Gokova, Gulf of Hisaronu and Gulluk before reaching dozens of deserted bays with green forests and moving down to the rocky coastline. This experience becomes priceless when you visit the inland ancient sites of Didyma and Iassos upon anchoring – the background resounding with the sound of goat bells tinkle at a distance.

Another virtue, visible in any member of Blue Voyage crew is the courtesy, & respectfulness towards the guests, no matter how busy they get with the endless toils in Blue Voyage. Most meals are consistently, served in Family style, on the big outdoor dining table of Gulet, with everyone supporting themselves from shared platters.

In fact, these banquet cultures is attributed to the meals of Gulet cruises, in order to promote unity & intercorrelation among racially &culturally, separated individuals, especially in cabin charter Gulets.

4.    Getting from place to place.

Each day, Gulet usually moves a few times, depending on your cruise itinerary. The sailor hops in the dinghy to untie the lines keeping the Gulet in exact place & simultaneously, the captain starts the engine. The anchor holding the front part of boat is raised then. This process may take a considerable time. For instance, in some spots, it is required 150m or more length of chain to be laid out to keep Gulet safe in position.

The majority of the guests prefer sleeping on the deck during the hottest days of summer.

You are capable of falling asleep at ease, without any interruptions of pesky mosquitoes flying here & there throughout the night, & dawn, after covering yourself in insect repellant. Private Charters

A private charter, one of the best options, is when you assemble a group of family and/or friends and charter an entire yacht for a cruise of a few days or a week.

Cabin Charter

A  cabin charter  is when you just  rent a cabin  on a Turkish gulet —much like a hotel room—rather than charter the entire gulet. It is a cheaper option for those who aren't traveling with a big group.

What Bodrum Tour Offers

With a flexible itinerary, guests can change their plans for the best vacation of their choice. For example, if guests discover an anchorage that they particularly love, they can choose to spend extra time there. At night, if you have more energy and want to do something more exciting, you might choose to go ashore and enjoy local Turkish cuisine and nightlife. The beauty of a private gulet is that you have the choice.

Bodrum Tour Yachting and Travel offers multiple options based on preference, price range, and itinerary. When choosing the gulet or yacht that best suits your party, you have the option to choose from a range of luxury gulets, deluxe gulets, and traditional models. Each gulet's prices are based on amenities, itineraries, and season (low, high, and peak). May – October low season, June - September high,  July – August peak season for gulet and yacht charter.

Bodrum Tour Yachting and Travel does an excellent job communicating with guests and helping build the perfect plan for your gulet trip based on your preferences. For example, if you prefer to spend more time sailing, they will match you with the right yacht and itinerary for the best conditions depending on the time of year.

BLUE CRUISE IN TURKEY

Firstly, when we say blue cruise; we are talking about wooden vessels made in Turkey that can be a motor yacht or a luxury gulet designed for you to have a unique experience. Turkish gulets usually have cabins from 2 to 20 built mostly comfy enough for the perfect voyage that often sails on an engine (weather permitting for the fun of it, the captain can open the sails and let you enjoy for a while).

Blue Voyage is an exclusive way to enjoy the natural beauty of the crystal clear turquoise coast of Mediterranean and Aegean, especially at Bodrum, Marmaris, Antalya, Fethiye, and Olympos while having the opportunity of visiting the archaeological sites is the icing on the cake. If you consider combining it with Greece; it would let you cover both the Mediterranean & Aegean coasts, Dodecanese and Cyclades Islands Group.

With steady winds and crystal clear waters beside the numerous secluded anchorages; blue voyage can be the most memorable part of your holiday, and you can quickly get addicted and this unique experience which will tempt you to come back, again and again, every time.

Sea lovers around the globe know that the cruise ships are for hundreds or thousands of passengers, but Turkish gulets are entirely different. So, here is why you should consider chartering your own vessel rather than massive cruises.

  • On a big ship, you will sail during the whole night to reach the other destination; on a private Turkish gulet; travelers and yachtsmen can choose differently and your anchorages each night to rest under the stars.
  • On a cruise ship, you cannot swim in the sea! On a private yacht, you swim whenever and as long as you want.
  • On a ship, you have no other chance than obeying the schedule while on a private vessel, you plan your day. You have breakfast, lunch, and dinner whenever you like, stay in a bay as much as you wish, enjoy swimming, skiing, fishing, surfing, diving and exploring fantastic ruins on beautiful countryside whenever you want.
  • On big ships, you are traveling with hundreds (sometimes thousands) of strangers, whereas on a yacht, you have only your loved ones around.

Travel Atelier, being in the blue cruise industry as luxury travel experts and as also a personal interest; we have a great gulet portfolio of Turkey & Greece with professional crew providing outstanding service. Read some of our reviews here to learn more.

Blue Tour Turkey

The Blue Tour is the best and most unique trip you can take in Turkey.

Blue Cruise Turkey is where you can see the sunset in all its glory and beauty. It is to take advantage of the tranquil blue waters while eating fish, appetizers, and beverages.

It means to pick up a book you haven’t read in a long time and lose yourself in it. It’s to be alone with your loved one at sunset, explore different bays, swim in clear, calm water, and lie on the beach sand.

How long it’s been since you’ve felt free is to get away from the noise and weariness of the city and go on an inner trip to find yourself.

How about a blue trip along the most beautiful shores of the Aegean and Mediterranean, where green and blue meet in natural wonder bays? Also, this trip can be a lovely boat ride where you and your friends and family can spend the day and night together and have fun.

How did “The Blue Cruise” get started?

The Blue Trip story starts in the Gulf of Gokova. Cevat Şakir Kabaagacli (fisherman of Halicarnassus), a historian, translator, and writer, was sentenced to kalebentlik in Bodrum by the Istiklal Court for a piece that was published in ‘Illustrated Week’ in 1925.

The length of his punishment was three years. But Cevat Şakir’s time in the basement goes from being a punishment to being fun. So, it was agreed that he would be taken back to Istanbul. After his sentence is over, Cevat Şakir moves to Bodrum.

In ancient times, he got the nickname “fisherman of Halicarnassus” from the name Bodrum. He signed many works that everyone knows today with this name.

Cevat Şakir told us in his works about his trips to the Gulf of Gokova, parts of his life, and the people he met. And he thought it was fitting to call this several-day trip with his friends in the Gulf of Gokova, which began with very simple conditions, a “Blue Cruise.”

A Day in Brief

The day starts on the boat with a nice breakfast in the cool morning air. Breakfast is normally served at night in the bay where the ship is anchored, and then a hard pier comes right after.

They try to get there early in the morning when the sea is calm. Everyone can do whatever they want in the moored bay after lunch. For fun, people swim, dive, surf, and water ski.

As the sun goes down, everyone gets more excited. It’s time to “sink the sun” with a drink and eat the fish you’ve been saving.

When it’s midnight, you close your eyes under a sky full of stars, and each time a star moves, you can think about what you want.

The Blue Voyage is too interesting and complex to fit into a few words. So come on over and stay with us!

TURKEY BLUE CRUISE ROUTES

Between Bodrum and Demre, the middle part of the Blue Cruise route is made up of bays in the Aegean and the Mediterranean. You can also start the tour in Istanbul and go all the way to Antalya.

But the best part of the Blue Trip is when you stop in bays that are close to each other. Today’s “Blue Cruise” is usually done on wooden gulet-style boats that are 20 to 40 meters long. Even though it can sail with the wind, it typically sails with the help of an engine.

The Blue Journey starts in Bodrum. Even though it is a good place to start Blue Tours to both Gokova and Hisaronu Bays, trips can also be set up from Kos Island, which is right next door, to the Cyclades and the Twelve Islands.

Even though the northern way, which is called Gulluk/Mandalya Bay and goes from Bodrum to Kusadasi, is not very popular, after anchoring near ancient towns like Didyma and Lassos, you can go on land trips.

This is a great opportunity for people who are interested in archaeology.

The first place to go is Gokova, which is a little different but more lively because it has more beaches and seaside resorts. Aside from the beautiful nature of Gokova, there are also the ruins of the old city of Keramos. Cleopatra’s Beach is the main attraction of these ruins.

There are rumors that sand from Egypt was brought to this beach for him and his lover, Anthony. This theme makes the place seem more foreign and interesting.

In the past, Knidos, which was southwest of Gokova, was a very important city. In modern times, it is a great place for all guests on the Blue Cruise trip to visit.

There are many private beaches and caves with no one around where you can swim, fish, and do other water sports in the clear blue water. If you like to fish, it’s easy to find a place to do so. You can have whatever you can find or catch for dinner, along with the barbecue our cook promised.

Your next stop is Datca, which is one of the three places in the world with the highest oxygen ratio and no development. Datca is like a dream town where you can walk around.

It has a unique, clean vibe, and there are restaurants, bars, and art shops. You can buy souvenirs for your home, family, and friends, or you can get something to remind you of your trip on the exotic blue cruise, Juliette.

The Gulf of Hisaronu is west of Marmaris. Aside from sailors on the Aegean, the most famous hotels are in Marmaris. Iztuzu Beach is one of the few places you can see a sea turtle, also known as a Caretta-Caretta. Small boats can be used to enjoy the river, and you can go to Dalyan to see the famous ruins of the old city of Kaunos.

You walk along the Dalyan Canal to get to the sea after being astounded by how ornate the king’s tombs are. You can also go to spas and take relaxing mud baths.

Fethiye is the next place we’ll go. This town is pretty big. It has a port that is one of the busiest in the area. There are many bays and islands near Fethiye.

You would also stop in Gocek, which is another town on the Gulf of Fethiye, on your way. You can see the most beautiful boats in the Gocek port at a good marina. When you go to the popular Oludeniz, which is south of Fethiye, you can see the beautiful blue lagoon and nature reserve.
