Small becomes large

Launched in 2011, The Linjett 34 is the smallest in the Linjett line-up, however relative to other models and its own size, it has the largest sail area. Designed by Mats Gustafsson – who carved the beautiful shapes of this yacht – it is slightly wider and taller than its predecessor (Linjett 33), which enhances the volume and storage, plus allowing more natural light into the yacht. Suited for sailing in the Swedish archipelago thanks to its narrow waterline which makes the hull cut through the water, this yacht is built to be easily sailed by two people, regardless of whether you choose to get her with a tiller or wheel.

Linjett 34 has a larger sail area relative to its sister yachts, Linjett 37 and Linjett 43. The hull shape is wider aft and with a slightly straighter bow than its predecessor Linjett 33, but it is still narrow in the water line which makes her quick. The hull and deck are built to be stiff and all the bulkheads are laminated. The composite has directed fibres with a Divinycell sandwich core, a combination that creates a rigid but light hull. High beams together with a keel pocket makes the hull stiff enough to handle grounding better than most yachts and supports the rig when tightened in heavy weather. Sheets, halyard and tuning lines all run smoothly under the deck and come out by two winches in the cockpit, close enough that the helmsman can reach all of them while driving. At the same time, this gives a tidier and more secure cockpit space for the crew.

The handcrafted interior finish is just one of a Linjett yacht’s most renowned features, and the craftsmanship of the carpentry and the beautiful woodwork of each boat is what makes the name so sought-after. In the Linjett 34, this becomes more admirable when this skill is used to create good stowage spaces. The first feeling you get when entering the saloon is determined by volume and light, which falls onto the finer details and helps you take in the design. It is notable that the sailboat is built by experienced professionals who know the features required for an interior during heavy weather.

Rig & Sails

Like the other Linjett yachts, the Linjett 34 has a 9/10 rig in aluminium from Seldén. The main sail traveller is located on the cabin top, out of the way from the cockpit, and the sheet is run aft to the helmsman. Double swept spreaders guarantee that the rig stands firmly without the support of the backstay. Trimming of the backstay is efficiently done by the push pit. The yacht comes as standard with a self-tacking jib. You can choose a 110% overlapping genoa, which can be furled in and become an effective self-tacking jib without losing the sail in shape or rigidity. This makes the yacht easily managed double handed, and with a family on board it allows the helmsman to singlehandedly and easily take all responsibility for the sailing.

First look: J/45 and Linjett 39

Rupert Holmes casts his eye over the some of the latest new yachts for 2021 and picks out three interesting models, the J/45, Solaris 60 and Linjett 39

Manufacturers are continuing to design and build innovative new boats in 2021. This month, we’re looking at three new yachts for 2021. The J/45 is a novel departure for J-Boats , which is aimed squarely at cruising sailors, while the Linjett 39 is a modern performance cruiser from the Swedish marque.

The J/45 is a new performance cruiser intended as a long-distance yacht that’ll be fun to sail, as well as being enormously civilised when spending extended periods of time on board.

It’s the result of a three-year collaboration between the north American and French arms of the company. In addition, Isabelle Racoupeau brought her interior design expertise to the project.

The premise behind the J/45 recognises that more than half the 15,000 J/Boats built to date are used solely for cruising, and that many of those owners would like a larger yacht with a greater level of comfort.

Guiding principles that informed design decisions include maximising interior volume and comfort, while maintaining an elegant profile.

In addition, the aim was for minimal wetted surface area and light displacement in order to promote good performance in light airs and thereby minimise the need to use the engine for propulsion while on passage.

This weight saving allows for a smaller, more easily handled rig, while a 42% ballast ratio allied to a choice of 2.1m, 2.3m or 2.6m draught bulbed keels promises an ability to ride out heavy weather .

Much thought and analysis has also gone into the systems and equipment on the J/45, which are optimised for efficient sail handling and manoeuvring, along with comfortable living. As a result the standard specification is unusually high, including the carbon bowsprit, oversize winches and gennaker deck hardware, that manufacturers typically list as expensive extras.

The first boat is currently in build at J-Composites in France for a Mediterranean-based client and is scheduled for delivery early this summer.

The latest model from Sweden’s Rosättra yard, the Linjett 39, is intended as a fast cruiser with a sleek hull shape and powerful rig that is easy to sail shorthanded.

At the same time additional freeboard and a higher coachroof relative to earlier models create a greater feeling of light and space on board.

An unusual aspect among today’s new yachts is the more traditional raked stem. This keeps the bows a little further from danger when mooring or anchoring bows-to a rocky shore in the natural harbours of Sweden’s archipelagos.

To minimise weight without compromising stiffness, construction is of vacuum-infused vinylester, with a Divinycell foam sandwich. Structural frames made of unidirectional fibres reduce the dependency on the main bulkhead, which opens up options for the internal layout.

This has allowed a more open saloon to be created, as well as a larger heads forward, plus a further space for a shower and storage of foul weather gear aft.

Several orders have already been confirmed and the first boat is scheduled to be afloat this summer.

Boat test: Linjett 39

Step aboard and you’re confronted with a fairly standard cockpit layout; twin helms with stylish black wheels and beautifully laid teak. There are chartplotters and instruments set into the binnacles with repeaters further forward above the companionway. There is decent storage under the helmsman’s seats and very deep lockers forward of this. The main seating area in the cockpit is complemented by a substantial teak table with ample room for six. In terms of controls, all running rigging is led back to two banks of jammers that come out right next to the binnacles and then lead on to matching pairs of Andersen winches to port and starboard. Combine that with the self-tacking jib and you have a yacht that can be handled very easily by one person. Up forward the decks are uncluttered and dominated by the track for the self-tacking jib. Jib cars for the genoa are led well inboard and provide a good sheeting angle. The anchor locker is roomy with a well proportioned lazarette aft where you can stow a Code 0 or similar.

Step below and you find yourself in a warmly lit space. There is a plethora of wood on show and the general ambience is very cosy. Double skylights plus large portlights set into the hull ensure plenty of light and nice views when sailing. There is an L-shaped galley to port with corian worktops and two fridges. Forward of this is a large seating area with beautifully crafted table.

To starboard there is a well proportioned forward facing chart table, although there is the option to extend the bench seat and then have no seat at the chart table.

The test took place just outside the Linjett yard, deep in the Stockholm archipelago. Although beautiful, this area presents very distinct challenges as it’s rather like lake sailing with shifts and lifts all over the place. We sailed in about 8-15kn of wind and totally flat water and the area lived up to its reputation, presenting us with big shifts and unpredictable gusts and lulls blowing between islands and funelling down channels. The Linjett proved itself to be a lively performer for a big boat; close winded and sensitive, with decent amounts of acceleration and the ability to ghost through the puffs. The boat was not overly tender and the big rudder provided more than adequate grip and decent feel that made the somewhat intuitive sailing you have to do in this area a pleasure. With the kite up and breeze freshening, we sailed very high in order to avoid a submerged rock while also getting hit by an extra strong puff of breeze. Despite the boat being palpably overloaded, the rudder maintained grip and although we half broached, there was always a surprising element of control. All in all, the boat was fun and far from sedate – much closer to an Arcona than a blue water heavyweight in the Najad/Hallberg Rassy mode.

The Shogun yachts are designed in a collaboration between Oscar Södergren and Håkan Södergren, supported by North Sails.

From the drawing board to launch, every part of the production process is made in Sweden, including making of the moulds, composite laminates, crafting of the interior and final assembly.  

Our yachts are built at one of Sweden’s most experienced and well-respected boatyards: Linjett Yachts. Located only an hour north of Stockholm, the boatyard is renowned for its great quality builds. They have immense knowledge in managing custom designs with three generations of accomplished boatbuilders inhouse.  

Our hull and deck laminates are manufactured by Vaxholm Komposit, one of the most esteemed composite manufacturing companies in Sweden, in close cooperation with Linjett Yachts. Vaxholm Komposit are at the forefront in building performance boats for customers with high quality requirements. They focus on sophisticated carbon constructions for race boats, modern commercial vessels, and special projects for the police and military.

De yachtclub is een gegeven in Oostende. De ligging aan de haveningang is uniek. Je komt er wel enkel binnen indien je lid bent, of op uitnodiging van een lid. De gerechten zijn copieus en heerlijk, maar ook erg prijzig.

Members only. Beetje jammer want een heel mooie kaart met kwaliteitsvolle vis- en vleesgerechten. Mooie ligging, vlotte bediening.

Vraag mij af of het personeel wel een horecadiploma heeft? Barvrouw is zeer ontbeleefd en arrogant. We zagen het rauwe vlees op de grond vallen in de keuken. Basic regels van de horeca ontbraken. Vleesmes geven, peper en zout niet op tafel. Mayonaise kwam toen... de frietjes op waren. Water glazen ontbraken toen de waterflessen op tafel stonden.... Ook lang wachten om 12u binnen pas om 15u3 buiten. Na voorgerecht en hoofdgerecht Meer

De locatie is top, met uitzicht over Oostende, het strand, de pieren, de jachthaven, de werkhaven, de bedrijvigheid op het water. Bij zomerse omstandigheden is het heerlijk toeven op het terras, maar ook binnen is het sfeervol. I.v.m. COVID-19 zijn er binnen stijlvolle schermen geplaatst.... Bediening is ondanks de topdrukte vlot en vriendelijk. Voorgerecht, hoofdgerecht en dessert voldoen allemaal weer aan de verwachtingen. Meer

Leuke setting. Een aangename kaart, wel redelijk geprijsd. De bediening kan vriendelijker. Het eten was prima.

Het prachtige weer nodigde ons uit om te lunchen op het terras met uitzicht op de Havengeul. Het eten was dik in orde, grote porties, en prijzen overeenstemmend. Één kleine tegenvaller was de (oudere) dienster die nogal kort, onaangenaam en bruut was ( morsen van... glas water zonder te excuseren). Aan één zaak was te wennen: de crême brulée was volledig warm ( normaal is enkel de bovenkant opgewarmd en de vanille fris) Meer

Zeilend van Nederland richting het zuiden is de haven van de Royal North Sea Yacht Club een heerlijke levendige plek voor een stop. De altijd enthousiaste begroetingen van Simon de havenmeester maken er meteen een feestje van om hier een ligplaats te kiezen. De visafslag,... het strand, de bedrijvigheid van vissersboten, pontjes en zeeschepen maken het echt een gezellige zeehaven. De YACHTCLUB ademt de sfeer van decennia (wedstrijd)zeilen uit. Het restaurant en het prachtig gelegen terras torenen hoog boven het water uit, zodat er altijd in alle richtingen een fantastisch uitzicht is. In het clubhuis van de North Sea Yacht club kan je prima dineren en genieten van het schitterende uitzicht, hetzij over de jachthaven dan wel richting zee. De menu kaart toont zeer klassieke vis- en vlees gerechten. Vriendelijke bediening.

Je zit inderdaad op een exclusieve locatie, maar 28 euro voor een handvol gepelde garnalen, een gekookt ei en een gepelde tomaat, een beetje mayonaise uit een pot, en overbakken frietjes (ik twijfel zelfs over diepvries of niet), is er ruim over. Het is begrijpelijk... dat als mensen betaald moeten worden op basis van clubleden, die uiteraard niet alle dagen langskomen, ook al is het een grote club, dan zit je met een cashflow probleem en dat moet opgevangen worden. Wijn ibidem; in principe kan je de aankoop x 3 doen, hier is hij gemiddeld x 7. Ik stel voor nog 3 dagen per week open te doen, en kwaliteit te leveren. Nooit meer. Meer

Eén van de meest dynamische watersportclubs en jachthavens van de Belgische kust

De RNSYC Oostende is in 1946 opgericht door een hechte groep Snipe en Papillon zeilers en is uitgegroeid tot één van de meest dynamische watersportclubs en jachthavens van de Belgische kust. Met een capaciteit van circa 100 ligplaatsen verdeeld over het Montgomerydok, de Churchillkaai en de Visserskaai biedt de RNSYC een unieke locatie aan in hartje Oostende, zowel voor vaste liggers als voor bezoekende jachten.

De club investeert continu in de modernisering van haar infrastructuur en werking. De club is dan ook de thuishaven van de meest actieve wedstrijdvloot zeiljachten langsheen de Belgische kust en is er tevens de draaischijf voor internationale kielboot klassen zoals J24, Draak en SB20 waartoe we beschikken over een eigen botenkraan tot maximaal 2 ton.

Ook bij de zwaardboten komen de internationale eenheidsklassen zoals Laser, Europe en Finn bij onze club steeds sterker aan bod. Door onze locatie aan het “klein strand” van Oostende zijn we perfect gelegen om grote events te huisvesten op loopafstand van het station en het stadscentrum, op 10 km van het vliegveld en op minder dan een kwartier zeilen naar het wedstrijdgebied. Dit alles ondersteund door een slipway, trailerparking en uitgebreide parkeergelegenheid voor wagens en campers in de onmiddellijke omgeving.

Jaarlijks organiseert de RNSYC meer dan 20 regatta’s met nationale en internationale uitstraling onder deskundige leiding van ons toegewijde Race Comité. Ook de woensdagavond wedstrijden in de zomermaanden zijn bijzonder populair. en door de organisatie van het regelmatigheidscriterium Ostend Cup in samenwerking met de Twins Club Bredene en de Ostend Sailing ontstaat een gezonde kruisbestuiving tussen het klassieke zeilen met éénrompsboten en de wereld van multihull’s in beachclubs waar onze leden sporadisch meegenieten van  het surfen, kiten, suppen of zeilwagenrijden.

“Last but not least” heeft de RNSYC samen met de Twins Club recent het initiatief  genomen om een J24 trainingsprogramma te introduceren om leden en toekomstige leden te laten proeven van de Noordzeegolven vanop zeiljachten.

RNSYC is an exclusive location, provided with a bar and a gastronomic restaurant and a multipurpose meeting room up to 40 persons. It is situated in the Ostend marina. Magnificent view over the harbour and the sea guaranteed.

The club was founded in 1946 by a close group of Snipe and Papillon sailors and has grown into one of the most dynamic water sports clubs and marinas on the Belgian coast. It is the only yacht club in Belgium located in the city centre. All shops, restaurants, train and bus connections, museums, etc. are within walking distance.

Superb view. Restaurant for members only! Very good Dover sole

Typical not too much hassle marina restaurant with good quality brasserie type food in relaxed atmosphere. Wonderful bouillabaisse and shrimp salad. Great harbour views. Friendly staff.

Just had lunch at this place while racing in the club. To go into the restaurant you need to be a member of a sailing club but I don’t think they check. View out in the harbor is fantastic, fish is well made and fresh.... Service was ok. But honestly speaking the pricing is ridiculous. A Sole mariniere with just Salat and chips for € 33,80 I hardly ever had before. At least not in a sailing club restaurant. Tomorrow’s lunch I will definitely have in one of the many more restaurants around. More

Very poor quality, where the food was rather good in the past, prices are going up and food we got was nearly eatable. Toilets were dirty, no soap, no towel. I was so embarrassed to my friends that I forgot to take pictures.

If a warm welcome or friendly staff reflects the start of a perfect evening well... sorry! This little nervous impolite rude lady made it an unforgettable evening ( in a bad way). Perhaps she doesn’t know who pays her salary nor that she isn’t Royal... ! tssssss shame More

The management should make up it' mind up about the fact if this is a private venue or not. If it is a private venue it has no place in Tripadvisor. I have been sailing for more than 40 years and I have never experienced... such unfriendlyness. The waitress in casual clothes simply refused to serve me claiming that is a private club memebers only. But this members rule does not seem to be so strict as I saw there was a monthly dinner of the Fifty-one club Oostende, for sure not all members of the sailing club. More

Overpriced for nothing very memorable. Sour service. I thought we had done something wrong but then I saw other reviews. Shame really because one of our diners came a month ago and was very positive. There surroundings are nice, I guess and these are were... comfy! More

I've eaten here many times (always good), but last Monday evening was exceptional. The Cod on mashed potato and spinach was perfect. I never tire of watching the boats coming in and out. When it's warmer the terrace is lovely. If you can get it... in, you'll enjoy yourself. More

We have been here several times over the years. Service is very friendly. The restaurant is a private club so you must be invited by a member to get in. Food is most seafood and fish, only fresh from the market, if they are sold... out they will tell. Nothing out of the freezer. The chef prepares authentic classics but also dishes with a thai touch. And every day they have a very good cheap lunch special. More

The level of service is very much below the line. In a yacht club I would have expected to have a more customer oriented staff. Too bad, I am sorry

RNSYC is always friendly and welcoming - as always the swell from the sea and the boats in the harbour make the basin a bouncy place to be - sometime uncomfortably so. The club facilities are good and the bar cheap. We didn't eat there... this year. More

Awfull food since the former coock has been fired. They even don't know how to prepare fresh belgian fries (as they ran out of the frozen ones)

This Yacht Club requires a membership to get access. Members of foreign Yacht Clubs are welcome. And members can bring guests. It's situated in a top location - the best - in Ostend. The food and service have been consistently outstanding for many years. It's... my favorite place for lunch or dinner because of the quality of the always fresh food, the friendly service, and the gorgeous views on the Yacht Harbor, the city line of Ostend, and the Channel. It is also good value for your money, and the interior is charmingly classic and maritime, very cosy ! More

Delicious local food prepared fresh on the day. Beautiful views of the harbour. Only drawback is that you have to be invited by a member of the Yacht Club to dine there. Luckily I have a friend who is. One of the best food experiences... in Ostend. More

Ate there the once and had a drink twice , both times found the service poor and the staff rude, to be told to stay there and wait was to much, while she sorted the music out, we only wanted to pay the bill! The... food was ok but expensive and the surrounding are nice,I would not go again and would not recommend unless you like to be treated like a univited guest at a private party More
