Marine VHF certification

The VHF SRC (Short Range Certificate) is a Certificate of Competence and Authority to Operate, granted by the Secretary of State. It is the  minimum  qualification required to operate VHF Radio equipment on a UK Flagged Vessel, including fixed, handheld, DSC and non-DSC radios.

Powerboat Level 1 - General

The RYA Level One course is an introduction to boating and is best viewed as a ‘taster’ or a ‘competent crew’ course. A great course it gives those attending a good grounding in the basics plus spends time on the safety aspects of boating too.

The vast majority of Level 1 courses that we run are for young children as in our experience adults are best served by starting with the Powerboat Level 2 course. If though there are two of you we’re always happy to schedule a date to suit. For a parent attending with a young child (or two) the Level 1 course can be a great day afloat.

Course Duration

1 day from 9am to 5pm (may finish about 4pm depending on whether children on the course are getting tired.)

Minimum Age & prior experience

For Level 1 the minimum age is 8 and no prior boating experience is necessary.

We use either our 6.8m or 7.8m Ribcrafts for this course.

Instructor – student ratio

3 students to 1 Instructor per boat.

As you will see from elsewhere on our website we pride ourselves on the quality and experience of our Instructors and particularly their ability to instruct in a fun, patient and encouraging manner.

What subjects does this course cover?

This course is in effect a scaled down version of Level 2 focussing purely on the practical handling elements of Level 2. During the course almost all of the time is spent on the water practising manouvres but there is also time to look at the safety aspects of boating. There are no classroom based theory sessions.

This course is perfect for children, young adults, and families that are new to boating and want to learn together, in addition to those that just want to experience an introductory day on the water.

If however you are looking to charter, purchase, or use a boat in the UK or Europe, the best course to undertake is the  Level 2 course , which includes a free ICC assessment.

WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?

This course is suitable for all students over the age of 8 years old, with no previous boating experience. The RYA Powerboat Level 1 Course is a 1-day introduction to the safe handling of a powerboat. Anyone over the age of 8 can take part, and our qualified instructors are dedicated to ensuring that each student gets the most out of this one-day training course, including the opportunity to learn on a 1-2-1 basis with an instructor.

Students under 16 will have their certificates approved under the following conditions: “To be under supervision of a responsible adult” and will be capable of sailing under adult supervision.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

RYA Powerboat Level 1

Rya powerboat level 1 overview:.

RYA Powerboat Level 1 is the first course in the RYA Powerboat Training Scheme, this one-day course offers a taster and introduction to the sport of powerboating. Sometime referred to as the RYA PB1 Course, it is suitable for complete beginners, however most people book the Powerboat Level 2 Course (2 days) as this includes everything in the Level 1 and is more comprehensive.

COURSE DURATION:

The Powerboat Level 1 is a short, one day course, run from 0915 to 1645. We run this popular course most weekends and some weekdays.

RYA POWERBOAT LEVEL 1 PRE REQUISITES

There are no pre-requisites for this course, although a minimum age of 8 years applies. Complete powerboating beginners will find this course a useful introduction to the sport.

RYA POWERBOAT LEVEL 1 CONTENT:

Your Instructor will start by showing you the basics of boat handling and ensure that you spend several hours on the wheel as well as crewing for the other students.

For those who want a bit more speed, there will be an opportunity for some planning speed handling in the afternoon. The student to instructor ratio will not exceed 3 to 1. Students will receive the RYA Powerboat Level 1 (PB1) Certificate, but for those who want to take up powerboating or require a licence for insurance purposes, we strongly recommend the full two day combined RYA Level 1 & 2 Powerboat Course instead.

RYA Intermediate Powerboat

This course covers the practical use of pilotage and passage planning by day on coastal waters using both traditional and electronic navigational techniques.

This course builds on the foundation knowledge of the Level 2 Powerboat Handling course and is suited to those who aim to drive larger more powerful powerboats. During the two days you will cover, cruising at planing speed and more advanced boat handling. It is recommended for anyone considering moving on to the Advanced course.

Assumed knowledge:

Candidates should be competent to the standard of National Powerboat Certificate Level 2 with coastal endorsement. The course may be conducted on a planing or displacement boat.

Knowledge to the level of Day Skipper theory is recommended. It is strongly recommended that candidates hold a first aid certificate and a VHF/SRC operator’s certificate.

RYA Advanced Powerboat (Course)

This course is for leisure and professional boaters wanting to undertake more adventurous trips by day and night.

It includes navigation at planing speed, weather and other aspects of skippering powerboats on more challenging passages in coastal waters.

Anybody undertaking this course must have the practical skills of the Intermediate course and knowledge of navigation to at least the standard of the Coastal Skipper/RYA Yachtmaster Shorebased course.

RYA Advanced Powerboat (Course, Prep and Exam)

This course is designed to give you the best chance of passing your Advanced CoC Exam, which will be examined by an RYA Examiner who has not taken part in the course.

The theory days will refresh your existing knowledge of IRPCS, buoyage, navigation and other topics that can be examined. The two day Advanced Powerboat course will get you practically ready for the afloat activities.

Candidates should be competent to the standard of the Intermediate Powerboat Certificate with a thorough knowledge of navigation and chart work to the level of the Coastal Skipper/RYA Yachtmaster Shorebased certificate. It is strongly recommended that candidates hold a first aid certificate and a VHF operator’s certificate.

RYA Tender Operator

Originally intended for operators responsible for ferrying passengers between Superyachts and the shore, this course is very useful for anyone operating a powerboat day or night with responsibility for carrying passengers.

Designed in conjunction with the Professional Yachting Association (PYA) this course is intended to build upon a candidate's basic powerboating knowledge and skills.

Attendees will gain confidence in their ability to manoeuvre a powerboat more smoothly but the real benefit is the emphasis on learning important skills in pilotage, both day and night, and passenger carriage and management.

The course includes plenty of time to practice working with a crew member and operating short-handed.  In navigation terms, the emphasis is on short ship-to-shore transfers by day and at night.

Passenger safety and comfort, daytime pilotage, night time pilotage, emergency situations, associated theory.

RYA Advanced Powerboat Course - £375

Boatability advanced powerboat course.

Course Duration:

A maximum of 2 days with a 1 Night Navigation Exercise carried out on day one of the course 

Course Cost:

The RYA Powerboat Advanced Training course is £375 per person - Unlike some we will still run the course with only one student, hence we do not offer silly prices.

• Under the RYA's guidelines the Advanced course can only be run over 2 days, it is not permitted to be a 3 or 4 day course! 
• If you are training with the intention of taking the RYA Powerboat Advanced Assessment for commercial endorsement, then we can offer familiarisation training with the assessment area and the topics that will be covered by the assessor independently of the course. 
• We strongly recommended that you do not jump straight into taking the commercial assessment on completion of the Advanced course, in case any weak areas are highlighted during the training; which could be a waste of your money! 
• To date all our students who have attended a commercial assessment have passed! 
• We provide the boat(s), fuel, all safety equipment as well as warm waterproof clothing as part of our course, there are no hidden charges! 
• There is free parking on site and we provide tea and coffee. This is not a residential course but there is plenty of accommodation nearby if required.

• Carry out relevant engine checks 
• Ensure equipment/gear is stowed and secure 
• Can carry out pilotage plans and pilotage for entry into or departure from harbour 
• Can use leading and clearing lines, transits, back bearings and soundings as aids to pilotage 
• Can use GPS and understand its limitations in pilotage 
• Can Navigate using soundings 

Boat Handling:

• Has knowledge of the differences for a twin engine vessel 
• Understands the importance of boat control in waves and adequate seating to minimise possible injury 
• Understands the characteristics of various hull forms and propeller configurations 
• Understands what action if to be taken in rough weather 
• Can demonstrate a practical understanding and correct use of power trim and trim tabs (if fitted) 
• Can demonstrate an awareness of the effects of wind and tide when manoeuvring including: 
• Steering to transits and in buoyed channels

Course Topics - Theory

Meteorology:

• Understands the terms used in shipping forecasts, including the Beaufort Scale and the significance of it to a small craft 
• Understands the sources of forecast information and interpretation of forecasts including synoptic charts 
• Understands the significance of meteorological trends 
• Can interpret a synoptic chart 
• Can use and interpret forecasts to make decisions about passages 

Rules of the Road (IRPCS):

• Can apply IRPCS at sea

Use of Engines:

• Knows how to change a propeller 
• Has knowledge of propeller diameter and pitch 
• Has knowledge of Ventilation and Cavitation 
• Understands the checks to be made before starting, during running and after stopping for diesel and petrol engines 
• Understands the importance of periodic checks on engines and electrical systems including spark plugs, water filters and pump impellers, transmission belts and what spares we need to carry

Emergency Situations - Students Understand:

• Correct action to take in emergency situations 
• Fire prevention and fighting 
• Hull damage and watertight integrity 
• What to do in a medical emergency 
• Towing or being towed 
• Helicopter rescue procedures 
• How to issue a distress by all available means 
• Search Patterns 
• The danger of cold shock and immersion hypothermia 

Night Cruising:

• Can take charge of a powerboat at night, including leaving and entering harbour 
• Demonstrate the ability of keeping a proper look-out and identifying lit and unlit positions by night

Successfully completing this course allows you to convert your certification to an International Certificate of Competence (ICC), enabling you to hire boats internationally for personal or professional use.

Please bring the following:

• Weather-appropriate clothing- hats and gloves when cold. 
• Footwear you don’t mind getting wet. 
• Packed lunch and a water bottle. (There are shops near the centre.)
• A Passport-sized photo (for Powerboat Level 2 Certificate)

Provides the skills and background knowledge needed by the competent powerboat driver and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence. It aims to teach boat handling and seamanship in powerboats. It focuses on low speed close quarters handling, man overboard recovery, an introduction to driving at planing speed, and collision regulations. The course can be taken at an inland or coastal location. It may be conducted in a variety of boat types, both planing and displacement. The certificate issued will be endorsed to show the type of boat in which the training took place.
