Shark 24 is a 24 ′ 0 ″ / 7.3 m monohull sailboat designed by George Hinterhoeller and built by Halman Manufacturing Co., Hinterhoeller Yachts Ltd., and C&C Yachts starting in 1959.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Although the first SHARK was built of plywood. But when designer/builder George Hinterhoeller started building them of fiberglass he couldn’t keep up with demand and the design became an international success. Since then, more than 2,500 Sharks have been built. Besides North America, Sharks sail the lakes of Austria, Switzerland, Germany and the waters of the Swedish archipelago. There have been a number of cosmetic changes to the design but, by in large, one-design standards have been maintained. ‘Sharkscan’ has been the class newsletter.

shark 24 sailboat

Windrift Judy Kingsley’s “Windrift” off Coboug in 1981

When George Hinterholler designed the Shark in 1959, he was looking for a boat that would “go like hell when the wind blew.”  Growing up sailing in Austria’s Salzkammergut region, Hinterholler was used to light displacement finkeelers; fast, responsive and exciting.

The few sailboats he found on Lake Ontario when he immigrated to Canada in 1952 had heavy displacement hulls.  They were ponderous and had a bad habit of hoppy-horsing in the rough Lake Ontario chop.

The young boat builder/designer was bored by their performance. Announcing that he could build a boat that would sail circles around the rest, he retired to the shed behind his Niagara-on-the-Lake home and built Teeter Totter, a hard-chined 22-foot sloop made of plywood.  It was the forunner of the Shark.  And when the wind blew, it did go like hell. Its designer loved it and so did his friends.

There was an immediate demand for the nimble little boat 35 years ago, so that winter Hinterholler increased the length to 24 feet and began building plywood Sharks in his shed.  Hull number 5 was for a customer by the name of Bill O’Reilly who demanded that his boat be built of a substance relatively new to boat building; fiberglass.  He even offered to teach Hinterholler how to use it.  With fiberglass it took 18 man-hours to produce a hull instead of the 128 hours devoted to a wooden hull, and  fiberglass was virtually maintenance free.  That made his boat the  affordable yacht and Hinterholler and Shark were on their way to  International success.

Since then, more than 2500 Sharks have taken their place in the fleet, both on the North American continent and in Europe.  It rapidly became the biggest one-design keelboat fleet on the Great Lakes and today their are active groups on the east and west coasts and in the Montreal and Ottawa areas.  About 500 Sharks sail the large lakes of Austria, Switzerland and Germany and the waters off the Swedish archipelago.

There have been changes since Hinterholler first designed it, but they have been cosmetic.  The sleek hull, straight stem, and long flat run at the stern, fin keel and spade rudder made it a racer that climbs easily over its bow-wave to achieve speeds in excess of 10 knots.  The six-foot beam and doghouse accommodate a V-berth, two quarterberths with  sink, stove and coldbox, making it a pocket cruiser with sitting headroom.  It draws less than four feet, making it an ideal boat to tuck into anchorages denied deeper draught boats.

The Shark’s prompt success was due in no small part to its early racing record.  In 1960, Hinterholler crewed for George Steffan, later President of Mirage Yachts, in the Freeman Cup.  They cleaned up with three 1sts using brisk 18-knot winds to put a leg them and their nearest competitor in the race.  In the 1963 Freeman Cup the Shark did it again.  For small boats, the course was from Niagara-on-the-Lake to Rochester NY, 80 nautical miles along the south shore of Lake Ontario.  There were no spinnakers and no genoas on Sharks in those days and the race was sailed with main and working jib only.

“We thought our biggest competition would be the “Thunderbirds,” Hinterholler said “but after the first surf, we knew that there would be no contest.  We barreled down the course in seven hours and 44 minutes.”

In 1963, using a spinnaker on a close reach across Lake Ontario, Sid Dakin, one of the first to own a Shark, sailed the blockhouse Bay race from Toronto to Olcott, NY, with an adrenaline pumping average speed of 10.2 knots, beating the 56-footer Innisfree on a boat-for-boat basis.  That sort of speed boggled the minds of sailors unaccustomed to semi-displacement hulls.

Racing boats come and racing boats go, but the shark remains.  With its flexible rig and planing abilities, it is as up to date as anything on the market today.  And, with its low-aspect, 7/8ths rig and heavy keel, it has a sea-kindliness and seaworthiness to match its speed.

Hinterholler admits that the Shark’s scantlings are better suited to a tank, but the proof of his wisdom in overbuilding the boat has been in its longevity.  Virtually each of the 2,500 Sharks built in the last 35 years is still sailing and many of the first hulls off the line are still winning their share of races.

The Shark is seem sailing happily in all major Canadian cruising waters, but some owners have taken them much further afield.  In 1972, Clive O’Connor, his wife, two year old baby and their guitar sailed their Shark from Niagara-on-the-Lake to Melbourne, Australia.  They arrived in good form, still speaking to each other and their Shark, at last report, was still being used for research on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.

Randal Peart sailed his Shark from Windsor and then crossed over to England, cruised the French canals, and then sailed BACK across and cruised the Caribbean for a year.  He’s still alive and well and eccentric. If you’d like to correspond with him, he’d be happy to hear from you at: [email protected]

(Editor’s Note: The text of the above paragraph has been changed from the original, to reflect new information from Randal’s wife, Patricia, received on Sept 11, 2000)

On his return, he reported no structural damage and no bulkheads adrift, but he did ask for a new set of gudgeons to replace his worn ones.

More recently, Bob Lush added a foot to the stern of his Shark to bring it up to a minimum 25-foot size for the OSTAR single-handed transatlantic race.  His biggest problem crossing the Atlantic was getting stuck in the doldrums and listening to empty sails slap for too many mind-destroying days.

The Shark is a forgiving boat which makes it appealing to novices, but with 14 separate lines to tweak, it is as technical as any sailor could wish. An active class association defined the Shark’s measurements and specifications as early as 1966 and in 1984, the association adopted a more formal measurement form patterned after a number of international one-design classes.  The fact that all Sharks, both new and old have been built to these specifications has kept the racing fleet viable and maintained the market value of the boat.

The association is active at the international, national and regional levels giving Shark owners who are not part of a local fleet a point of contact and an active racing program.  In addition to regular club races, there are regional, provincial and national Shark Class regattas.  The highlight of each year is the Shark World Championship, a seven race series held for two consecutive years in North America and, in the third year, in Europe.

Host for the 1994 Shark Worlds, won by Don Ruddy in #268 Dartos, was the Niagara-on-the-Lake Sailing Club, the club Hinterholler helped found.  Fifty-six Sharks competed in the 1994 event  The World Championship in 1995, won by John Clark/Don Ruddy was held in Freidrickshaven on Lake Constance.  Several Canadian Shark sailors competed in this event.

(Editors note:  The host for the World Championship in 1996, won by Jeff Mitchell in #336  Frankly Scarlet, was the Kingston Yacht Club and in 1997, won by Don Ruddy in #268 Dartos, was the Buffalo Canoe Club.  In 1998 the Championship, again won by Don Ruddy,  was sailed June 6 – 12, at the Yachtclub Breitenbrunn, Neusiedlersee, Burgenland, Austria.  The 1999 Championship was sailed at the Royal Canadian Yacht Club in Toronto, Canada and won by Sid Dakin in #1456 “Duck Soup”and the 2000 Championships at Parry Sound on Georgian Bay, in Ontario, was won by Don Ruddy in “Dartos “.  The 2001 Championship also won by Don Ruddy, was held at Yacht-Club Kreuzlingen in Switzerland and the 2002 Worlds is scheduled for Toronto,Ontario at the Mimico Cruising Club)

Richard Hinterhoeller was only four years old when his father designed the Shark 24 sailboat.

Sixty-four years later, it has gone on to become a favourite of many across North America and is set to be the star of a sailboat racing championship starting this Friday in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Hinterhoeller said his late father, George Hinterhoeller, created the 24-foot sailboat in 1959, here in NOTL, to serve as a family-friendly means of sailing the water.

“He moved to Canada in the mid-1950s and he’d built himself a Lightning class boat,” he said.

The Lightning class sailboat is a 19-foot racing sailboat first built in 1938 and used all over the world.

However, when his dad took his older sister out onto Lake Ontario one day in the Lightning, and as he looked out at the water – with no shoreline in sight – he realized something.

“He said, ‘This lake is too big to take a family sailing in a boat that could capsize,’” Hinterhoeller said.

So, in 1959, Hinterhoeller’s father built a boat that was safe for the family and performed well on the water.

“The result of that was the Shark,” he said.

Hinterhoeller will be the race director at this year’s World Shark Championship being held at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Sailing Club from Aug. 18 to 25.

More than 150 contestants from around the globe will be in NOTL for the competition, racing a boat that his father created.

“I’m just dazzled by the fact that he came up with something that is this popular,” he said.

The younger Hinterhoeller grew up in Niagara-on-the-Lake and is now retired in Mississauga.

“I identify as being from around Niagara-on-the-Lake — always have always will,” he said.

He still has his foot in the sailing world and volunteers with World Sailing and other international committees.

“This is the home of the Shark: this is where it all started,” he said, referring to Niagara-on-the-Lake.

“To be a part of it is always wonderful,” he added.

The Shark boats are still being built in Europe in small numbers, he said, adding that a few years ago his mother received a royalty check.

“My one niece says, ‘Boy, our grandfather sure set a pretty high standard for all of us, didn’t he?'” he said.

George Hinterhoeller would be “tickled” to see how popular the boat still is over 60 years later, his son added.

“His grandchildren’s generation is now buying these boats and fixing them up and then racing them competitively,” he said.

Hinterhoeller’s sailboat from 1982 will be out on the water during next week’s competition — but he won’t be behind the helm.

“I’m lending it to one of the European sailors who’s coming over,” he said.

He’ll be out on the water with his daughter, Madeleine, who will be one of the recorders.

One of the recorders’ jobs is to record the order in which the boats finish.

“It sounds simple until you have 20 boats crossing the line in 14 seconds,” he said.

He’s excited about the competition and looks forward to seeing the boats out on the water — and hopes for some good wind.

“The Sharks are quite an impressive boat when the wind kicks up,” he said.

His father’s sailing partner always had three pieces of advice for sailors.

“His advice was to start first, sail fast and head in the right direction,” he said.

“I will add one — have fun.”

Ripping Out the bulkheads in my Shark 24

shark 24 sailboat

  • Add to quote

Wow, what a fun day! Spent 6 hours stuffed into the corners of my Shark 24 cutting out all of the bulkheads. If you haven't been in a shark, well, they are made for sailing, not for interior comfort, so i really have a sore back now! Plan for tomorrow night is to get in there with the grinder and grind off the tabbing I was not able to cut away. Boy, am I looking forward to that! Unlike most boats that are this size (24 feet) a Shark has 2 sets of bulkheads. Oh boy, am I ever lucky, that way I get twice the work! Oh yeah, and it requires twice the amount of insanely priced plywood! This is the second boat that I have replaced the bulkheads on, so I know what I need to do, and it is wayyyy less intimidating this time around. When I redid my first boat last year, I was really apprehensive about doing the repair job, but on this one it is just a matter of setting aside the time and putting in the work. At least the worst part of it is over, I did get a bit nervous when i was lying on my back kicking the bulkheads out after having cut away all of the tabbing. Boats made in the early 60s were made to withstand some serious punishment, I guess epoxy and plywood were significantly cheaper back then, the tabbing on my main bulkhead was 1/4" thick!

shark 24 sailboat

Have fun! We had to do such a repair on our first boat (also a Shark) but got away with only the forward of the two center bulkheads. We had already bought boat #2 and had to make the Shark sale-worthy. btw - unlikely that the Shark was tabbed with epoxy - it would have been polyester resin. Hopefully you're planning to use epoxy this time around.

Polyester or epoxy Looks like they used polyester on the main bulkheads and epoxy on the forward sections. I plan to use epoxy and 10 oz cloth. How many layers of cloth did you put on the main bulkheads? I am planning 4, is that enough do you think?

A while ago I talked to someone who's done two Sharks. His trick to speed up the installation of the new bulkheads was to set them in place, then run a bead of 3M 5200 on each side where the bulkheads meet the hull. Not only does this hold them in place for the glassing work, but it also forms a nice fillet in the corner. The four layers of 10 oz cloth will be plenty for the tabbing. If you're using a veneered plywood, it's best to remove the face veneers before tabbing since the face veneers aren't very strong, and in the case of teak, there can be bonding issues because of natural oils in the wood. ^ ^ ^ Good advice. I've repaired tabbing, but never a whole damn bulkhead. If there are people willing to go to these lengths to repair Sharks, it's no wonder some of them are way past 40 years old and still out there in 25 knots plowing away.

Florida beaches open after shark attacks injure woman, 2 teens. What we know

Two teenagers and a woman were injured in two shark attacks less than two hours apart Friday afternoon in the Florida Panhandle. The woman lost her lower left arm and suffered "significant trauma" to other areas of her body, officials said at a Friday afternoon news conference. The mother of one of the teens said the girl's hand had been taken and her right leg had to be amputated .

Both incidents happened between Miramar Beach and Panama City Beach on the Gulf of Mexico.

Beaches in Walton and Bay counties were closed Friday and reopened Saturday morning , with warnings. The Walton County Sheriff's Office and Florida Fish and Wildlife monitored the shoreline by boat through the weekend. Panama City Beach Police in the Sheriff's Office helicopter Saturday reported seeing " a notable presence of sharks , specifically bull sharks," near the first incident.

"We want to reiterate that sharks are always present in the Gulf ," the WCSO said in a Facebook post . "Swimmers and beachgoers should be cautious when swimming and be aware of their surroundings at all times."

What happened in the shark attacks in Walton County, Florida?

At about 1:20 p.m. Friday, a 45-year-old woman was swimming with her husband past the first sandbar near Founders Lane in Watersound Beach, west of Seacrest Beach when she was bitten.

"She received significant trauma to the midsection and pelvic area," said South Walton Fire District Fire Chief Ryan Crawford at a press conference Friday , "as well as amputation of the left lower arm."

About an hour and a half later, just before 3 p.m., two girls aged 15 and 17 were swimming with friends and looking for sand dollars in waist-deep water near the Sandy Shores Court area of Seacrest Beach, about four miles east of the first bite. The girls were swimming just inside the first sandbar, Crawford said, in a similar proximity to the shoreline as the previous attack.

"Victim one received significant injuries to one upper and one lower extremity," Crawford said. "Victim number two received what's been described as flesh wounds to the right lower extremity."

How are the Florida shark attack victims? What are their conditions?

A teenager, Lulu Gribbin of Alabama, was treated on the scene by first responders and taken via helicopter to HCA Fort Walton-Destin Hospital. She is in critical condition with severe injuries, including the loss of her lower left arm.

The girl's mother, Ann Blair Gribbon, said on a platform for hospital patients that the teen's left hand was bitten off and a leg had to be amputated. She'll likely need at least five more surgeries to finalize the amputations, Gribbon said, but the girl's vitals were improving by Saturday and hospital staff was able to remove her breathing tube.

"This was a first big step," Ann Gribbin wrote. "Once she was settled her first words to us were 'I made it.'

The 45-year-old woman lost a hand to the shark bite and suffered trauma to her midsection and pelvic region, officials said. She was in critical condition Friday.

Several beachgoers had medical training, Walton County Sheriff Michael Adkinson, and at least two were nurses. "Those folks jumped in and started rendering care and help," he said, as the deputy and South Walton crew arrived.

Adkinson said he and Crawford decided to close the beaches for a couple of miles around the first attack. But before that was put into place, the second one occurred.

The other girl was taken to Ascension Bay Medical Center in Panama City Beach. She was in stable condition with flesh wounds to her lower right extremity.

Why did a shark or sharks bite people swimming in Walton County?

The precise cause is unknown. Most of the time when a shark bites a human being , it's because it was curious about the splashing in the water or startled by a swimmer or surfer crossing its path. Some sharks may bite to protect an area, similar to a dog barking at people in his yard. Shark bites, while potentially horrific, remain rare .

Panama City Beach police reported seeing a number of bull sharks near the sandbar by the first incident. Bay County Sheriff Tommy Ford said in a release that, according to the FWC, "bait fish are schooling near the shore at this time of year, which may have been a contributing factor in the attacks."

Destin charter boat Capt. Gary Jarvis told The Northwest Florida Daily News that there are more sharks in the Gulf of Mexico than there have been for years.

“There are more people that swim in the water than before and there are more sharks in the water than ever before. So, the incident rate of shark bites is only going to go in one direction,” Jarvis said.

Where did the Florida shark attacks happen? Where is Watersound Beach?

Watersound Beach is a community along the coast of South Walton between Seacrest Beach and Seagrove Beach.

Where is Seacrest Beach, Florida?

Seacrest Beach is farther to the east along Highway 30-A.

Are beaches open today in Walton County, Florida, after shark attacks?

Beaches were reopened Saturday morning with single red and purple flags flying, indicating hazardous water conditions and possible dangerous marine life are present.

As of Monday morning , yellow flags are flying in Walton County, indicating moderate surf and/or currents.

Are beaches open today in Bay County, Florida?

Neighboring Bay County also closed its beaches Friday and reopened them Saturday morning with single red and purple flags flying.

As of Monday morning , Panama City Beach continues to fly these flags indicating high hazard surf conditions and dangerous marine life, which means swimming is allowed but you swim at your own risk and should use extreme caution.

How do I avoid shark bites?

  • Swim with a buddy. Most sharks are more likely to approach a solitary person.
  • Stay close to shore.
  • Be careful around the area between sandbars or near steep dropoffs, both popular shark hangouts.
  • Stay out of the water at dawn or dusk when sharks are more active and feeding.
  • Avoid shiny jewelry or reflective swimwear that might resemble the sheen of fish scales.
  • Avoid areas where people are fishing or areas with known effluents or sewage. Stay away from areas with diving seabirds.
  • Be careful in murky water. Some shark species may not see you very well either, and there can be confusion.
  • Try not to splash too much, especially in a single spot. Sharks may investigate to see if you are a fish in distress.
  • If a shark is spotted, slowly and calmly get out of the water.

In this hour-long special, Mackie investigates a fishing phenomenon called depredation, in which a shark preys upon a fisherman’s catch and consumes it before it can be retrieved. Across the globe, more and more fishermen are encountering this competition for food, bringing humans and sharks in closer proximity than ever before. After an increase in shark sightings in his hometown, Mackie sets out to learn more about these cases from the local Louisiana fishing communities affected as well as specialist scientists. He discovers how these human-shark encounters may be pointing to larger environmental issues on the shores of Louisiana and through the Gulf of Mexico.

Six hospitalized at scorching Trump rally in Vegas amid ex-president’s teleprompter meltdown

Six people were hospitalized on Sunday after attending former President Donald Trump’s outdoor rally in scorching heat in Nevada.

Some 24 others were treated at the rally as temperatures exceeded 100 degrees Fahrenheit in Las Vegas, where thousands of people gathered in the city’s Sunset Park to watch Trump speak at his first large-scale rally since he was convicted of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records.

During the rally, he addressed the heat several times, even telling his supporters at one point not to die from heat exhaustion because he needed their votes.

“I don’t want anybody going on me. We need every voter. I don’t care about you. I just want your vote,” he said, adding that he was joking.

As his supporters laughed, Trump then went on to say that reporters attending the rally would take his words out of context and tell viewers that the ex-president had said a “horrible” thing onstage.

Earlier in his speech, he said the campaign would offer help to people who were feeling tired and joked that “everybody,” including the US Secret Service, was worried about the safety of the crowds and not about him.

“It’s 110, but it doesn’t feel it to me,” Trump said. “I’m up here sweating like a dog. They don’t think about me. This is hard work.”

It likely did not hit 110 degrees during Trump’s rally on Sunday, though similar temperatures were reached in the city only a few days ago.

Campaign organizers were seen handing out water bottles as supporters waited in line to be screened by security officers. Inside the venue, large misting fans, pallets of water and cooling tents were placed around the perimeter.

It is the second desert rally that Trump has held in the last month amid high temperatures across the southwest, leaving supporters standing for hours in the merciless heat. Trump also held a rally in Phoenix last month, where 11 of his supporters required hospitalisation due to the heat.

But despite the high temperatures, Trump said the heat was not the main cause of his discontent on Sunday, adding that he was angrier with the teleprompters not working well.

“I pay all this money to teleprompter people, and I’d say 20 percent of the time, they don’t work,” he said, adding he would not pay the vendor who provided the prompters. “It’s a mess.”

Trump also used the rally to tell supporters that he would not tax income from tips if re-elected, in a move widely regarded as a bid for support from service workers in the swing state of Nevada.

“So this is the first time I’ve said this, and for those hotel workers and people that get tips you’re going to be very happy because when I get to office, we are going to not charge taxes on tips people (are) making,” Trump told the crowd.

The Republican presidential candidate added that he would “do that right away, first thing in office,” and that he would seek legislation in Congress to make the change. “You do a great job of service, you take care of people and I think it’s going to be something that really is deserved.”

Nevada is one of six or seven swing states likely to determine the election , with a Fox News survey conducted after the guilty verdict showing Trump ahead of Biden in Nevada by five percentage points, an advantage roughly in line with an average of polls compiled by poll tracking website FiveThirtyEight.

Trump is seeking to win the swing state over by pushing his tax plan, which includes vague pledges of tax relief to middle-income workers and small businesses, in a direct appeal to service industry workers. As a tourism-centred economy, Nevada has more than double the national average of personal care and service workers, who make up four per cent of the total workforce in the state.

Trump has previously pledged to make permanent the Republican-passed individual tax cuts that he signed into law in 2017, which expire at the end of 2025. Tax experts estimate that doing so would raise US deficits by some $4 trillion over a decade compared to current forecasts.

As current law requires, tipped employees must report their tips as income. Eliminating this would add further to deficits without new revenues elsewhere.

President Joe Biden, has pledged to maintain Trump’s tax cuts for households earning under $400,000 a year, but wants to substantially raise taxes on the wealthiest Americans and on large corporations.

Meanwhile, Trump has steered clear of any plans to raise taxes - in a move that he hopes will attract middle-income service workers towards him.

But despite Trump’s strong showing in the polls in Nevada amid his criminal conviction on of 34 counts of falsifying business records , experts have predicted he may still face challenges in the state.

Rebecca Gill, a political science professor at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, said she was sceptical that polls were fully capturing where voters will be in a few months, given that many are not yet paying attention to the race.

Gill told Reuters she did not think Trump’s criminal conviction has fully sunk in with voters and could deter some moderate Republicans from backing him. In addition, a proposed amendment to enshrine access to abortion in the state constitution would, if it makes it onto the ballot, likely boost Democratic turnout.

However, she conceded that Nevada is “100% still in play” for the former president.

Sunday’s rally comes on the heels of a three-day fundraising push by Trump that included stops in San Francisco, Beverly Hills and Las Vegas, during which he raised $33.5 million from donors, according to senior campaign adviser Chris LaCivita.

15 boats destroyed or damaged in fire at Lake Mead marina

LAS VEGAS ( KVVU /Gray News) - Fifteen boats were destroyed or damaged and two docks suffered damage in a fire at a Lake Mead marina this weekend.

According to the National Park Service, the fire broke out at Las Vegas Boat Harbor Marina around 12:30 a.m. Sunday. Several agencies responded, and it took hours for them to contain the fire.

Witnesses said they were forced to evacuate their boats when the fire started, and some did not have time to grab personal belongings. Some left without knowing whether their boat was burned or spared.

“Oh, it spread within minutes, within minutes. It was like a rapid, boat, to boat, to boat, to boat. And then the sea dunes traveled across the lake and burnt some more boats on our dock,” said Michael Warren with Las Vegas Boat Harbor Security.

Fifteen boats were damaged in an overnight fire at a Lake Mead marina this weekend.

Warren said he was working security at the boat harbor when the fire.

“A resident came to me and told me that she was seeing smoke coming out of her boat,” he said. “She was frantic, you know, in distress, and wanted to know if we can put the fire out.”

Warren said they could see the fire under the woman’s houseboat and used three full fire extinguishers to try to fight it, but the flames and winds were too strong.

“We tried our best to put the boat out, the fire out, but we couldn’t. It just consumed the whole boat and spread it throughout the other boats,” he said.

The marina said there are no known fatalities and only two minor injuries. One boat owner went to the hospital for burn treatment, and one firefighter was checked out and released.

The marina notified boat owners about their boat conditions, and some said they came to the marina themselves Sunday morning to inspect the damage.

The marina remains open to the public, but a partial closure has been ordered for the harbor’s R and I docks. Visitors are urged to be cautious near Hemenway Harbor and the open portions of Las Vegas Boat Harbor due to potential safety concerns.

Boaters said caution tape restricts them from accessing the area where the fire happened.

Sharks and sunsets are the targets for the Sea Spirit's new adventure in Ponce Inlet

You know what the go-getters do when life gives them lemons.

In a roundabout way, you can carry that theory out to sea and apply it to the overabundance of annoying sharks — and not just out to sea, by the way, but throughout much of the intracoastal. Instead of making lemonade, you make it fun.

We have another local player in the shark-fishing game. While Dustin Smith’s NSB Shark Hunters and their clients have been catching/releasing from the shoreline for several years, the Sea Spirit is adding a different experience for locals and visitors itching for the rod-and-reel fight of their lives.

With a view, too.

NASCAR WAGERS A look at the NASCAR Sonoma odds board and our picks, advice; Austin Cindric can't win again, right?

“The idea was to offer something nobody else was doing,” says Haley Stephens, who, along with husband Capt. Nic, took over the Sea Spirit charter operation earlier this year.

Adding to the daily big-group fishing agenda, the Sea Spirit is targeting Wednesday and Saturday late-afternoons — 5:30 to 8 — for targeting nearshore sharks, followed by a sunset cruise on the way back to the Ponce Inlet dock.

“This is a great option for those who want to enjoy a boat ride, something family-friendly. Maybe they’re not sure they want to commit to an offshore fishing trip, which is five hours minimum,” Haley says. “It’s a good intro to offshore fishing.”

Ideally, they’ll head a few miles offshore, hang out about six sturdy rods baited with big hunks of cutbait, and wait for the hit. That’s when the rod is handed to a guest, and likely passed around once the battle starts taking its toll on tired arms. After pictures of the shark alongside the boat, the predator is released to go on its menacing way.

Yes, ideally. If the marine conditions aren’t allowing comfortable passage through the inlet, the Sea Spirit will stay inshore where, as local anglers have noticed more and more, plenty of sharks are on the prowl.

“Last week, we stayed in the river, and there were sharks,” Haley says.

Along with the fishing experience and sunset views, Capt. Nic and Haley are adding an educational element to the outing. Capt. Dave Nelson, a longtime local cap’n, will be at the helm, and will be joined on each trip by local shark expert Eric Sander , who has over six decades of experience on our waters.

“The trip is geared toward families and children, and we try to turn it into a hands-on, educational outing, not just about sharks, but also about our local ecosystem," Haley says. “When we did our first trip, I learned things I’d never learned before. That’s when I knew we had something special.”

The Sea Spirit is licensed to hold nearly 70 people, but they usually max out at 30 to 40 for the sake of comfort. Sunset/shark pricing is $69 for adults and $59 for kids, with tickets available on the website .

“I had bait in sight just about the entire time, from about five miles out until about a mile out,” he says. “Lots of blue runners and bonito on the bait pods, with big jacks and tarpon closer to the beach.”

Not sure why any pompano would still be around with our ever-warming water, but we’re hearing about a few hookups here and there. Whiting are expected these days, but it appears more and more pompano are putting down roots, heat be damned.

“Things slowed down tremendously for almost a week, and then miraculously all the fish came back the past four days,” says Marco Pompano. “The east wind brought in a lot of seaweed, but now the water is beautiful.”

Cathy Sanders ( Florida Fishin’ Girl) says early mornings surfside have been productive. Whiting and some pompano, she says.

She also recommends some common sense in the hydration department.

“The air temps have been getting hotter and hotter, so stay hydrated, especially if you’re planning to target larger fish that give a good fight,” Cathy says. “You don't realize how quickly they can tax your energy. I like to keep Gatorade packets handy to put into my water on these hot fishing days.”

Up in the Astor area, striped bass are keeping anglers hopping and entertained, while bluegill are plentiful and the specks are still hanging in there.

“All the fishing is pretty good right now,” says Kerry McPherson, who owns and operates the South Moon Fish Camp. “We have our Georgia crowd coming in next week, fishing mostly for bluegill.

“The locals are doing good on stripers — seems like afternoons are better than the mornings. Few people are fishing for specks, but we still have guys limiting out.”

To the south in DeLand, “big-time catches of bluegill are coming in,” says Capt. Bryn Adams ( Highland Park ).

Norris Dead River, the pipeline from Highland Park to Lake Woodruff, is a bluegill hotbed right now, Capt. Bryn says.

“Live crickets and worms work best,” she adds.

Do I need a fishing license?

You can find all the license info, including exemptions, on Florida's Fish and Wildlife Commission website: MyFWC.com. But the basics are: No: If you're 65 or older, 15 or younger, you don't need a license. “ Probably” Not: If you're fishing with a licensed guide or charter boat, both of which often purchase commercial licenses that cover their customers. Yes: Most everyone else, including visitors from other states. Yes: Even if you're a shore-based angler (shoreline, dock, pier, bridge, etc.), and even if fishing with a shore-based guide.  However: The shore-based license is free . . . But: You still need to register for that free license.

Where do I get a license and what does it cost?

Many bait shops sell licenses, as do the bigger retailers (Bass, Dick's, Walmart, etc.).  Florida's FWC uses a third-party site for buying or renewing fishing licenses:  GoOutdoorsFlorida.com. The cost : $17 for an annual license. Don't forget: Whether you're fishing fresh or saltwater, you need the specific license. Freshwater and saltwater licenses are both $17 annually.

I’m here on vacation, do I need a license?

Yes you do, and they're also available at GoOutdoorsFlorida.com or certain bait shops and big retailers. Cost: $17 for three days, $30 for seven days, $47 for a year. Also: Non-residents need to purchase that license even if they're just fishing from shoreline or shore-based structures. (Florida residents need that license, too, but they're free.)
