What is left for Yacht Rock Revue to prove? This top-notch group of musicians has already rocked onstage with John Oates, Eddie Money (RIP), and both versions of the band Player. They’ve trademarked the term “yacht rock,” both metaphorically and literally (U.S. Registration Number 3834195). From humble beginnings in a basement, touring in partnership with Live Nation and Sirius XM, they now headline sold-out shows across the country, from Webster Hall in New York to the Wiltern in L.A. While rising from bars to amphitheaters, they’ve ticked every box on the Rock Star Accomplishments bingo card. Except for one: Writing and singing their own songs.

Yacht Rock Revue’s first original record is ten songs inspired by the smoooooth sounds of the Seventies and Eighties. They’ve brazenly titled it Hot Dads In Tight Jeans – forgive them for bragging, but that’s what they are – and it returns Yacht Rock Revue to their roots in original music.

“I had a midlife crisis. That’s why we made this album,” says Nick Niespodziani, the group’s singer, guitarist, and spiritual leader. “Everyone in the band is a dad now, so we needed to make this happen, before we become grandpas. I’ve sung ‘Escape’ by Rupert Holmes at least a thousand times, and if that isn’t paying your dues, I don’t know what is.”

It’s rare that musicians in their 40s chase their rock star dreams. You’d have to be crazy to try. YRR knew they were underdogs, but resolved to take one more shot at the Top 40, and maybe even become a Cinderella story of midlife fulfillment.

Yacht Rock Revue began in the least-yachtiest of states, 2,000 miles from breezy Marina del Rey. Niespodziani and Pete Olson met in the fourth grade in suburban Indiana, went on to Indiana University in the late Nineties, formed the band Y-O-U, then escaped – Rupert Holmes reference intended – to Atlanta. One night, Y-O-U tucked their tongues deep in their cheeks and played a show of Yacht Rock songs. The rowdy (a nice way of saying drunk), sold-out crowd loved it.

When the club owner asked them to do it again, Niespodziani didn’t want to. But the club owner had an ace up his sleeve: money. Over the years, YRR (there’s also a Dave, a Greg, and literally three guys named Mark) have turned themselves into human wine spritzers, playing 120 to 150 shows a year, mastering Yacht Rock’s slick chords and mellow grooves, and partying like it’s 1979.

What began as a joke among friends soon put a ripple in the zeitgeist, starting a national trend through YRR’s concerts, lauded as “unabashedly joyous affairs” by Entertainment Weekly. They accumulated an extensive wardrobe of white belts and polyester shirts. Yacht Rock Revue were revered and well-compensated! Their life was a tenor sax solo! This is what every musician wants. But even as YRR was sailing the smooth seas of tribute-band superstardom, and the band members all became dads, Niespodziani was still writing original songs.

These  new tunes had the spirit of Yacht Rock, but were more modern – akin to Phoenix or Air, the hip bands that adapted Yacht for a younger audience. They brought the songs to a hot producer, Ben Allen, who’s worked with Gnarls Barkley, Animal Collective, and Neon Indian. Allen gave the songsa lustrous shine, for both new audiences and their ever-loyal fans, the Nation of Smooth. Niespodziani and Olson even co-wrote a song, “Big Bang,” with Yacht Rock master Matthew Wilder, famous for his massive 1983 hit “Break My Stride.”

“Step,” the record’s first single, is a peppy number replete with falsetto and bumping bass, a cross between the Bee Gees and Steely Dan’s “Peg.” It’s also the mission statement for the album in a way, because it’s about deciding who you want to be, and making space for that in your life. The seven-piece band display tight chops, and the songs incorporate Yacht Rock Revue’s sense of humor, especially on the funky, pro-margarita “Bad Tequila,” the flute-fired “Another Song About California,” and opening track “The Doobie Bounce,” where Niespodziani brags, “I used to sleep on couches/Now I sleep on nicer couches.”

Hot Dads In Tight Jeans is as plush and shiny as Kenny Loggins’ beard. And YRR are already dropping these new songs into their sets, to great response from longtime fans who are thrilled to hear new smooth. While others in YRR’s position stick with the tried-and-true, Niespodziani hopes the album will let them welcome aboard new fans, too. To paraphrase a notable mariner… they’re gonna need a bigger yacht.

“Here’s how I see it,” Niespodziani concludes, sliding into a waiting limousine. “We have only one fewer hit than Player did, and Player is immortal. We built this Yacht Rock thing on the power of memories and good vibes. None of that is changing; we're just gonna make a few new memories as well."

The Reverse Sunset Tour is slated to feature a rotating list of special guests, comprising soft rock legends like Kenny Loggins, Pablo Cruise, Richard Marx, and more. Since emerging in 2007, Yacht Rock Revue has been the hometown music hero in Atlanta. Initially a side project, the band scored numerous weekly gigs in local clubs. The setlist primarily consists of iconic ‘70s and ‘80s rock hits – which have been coined “Yacht Rock,” named after the 2000s web series that features the same type of music. The band became one of the most prolific live performers to come out of Georgia. Yacht Rock Revue has been recorded to perform over 100 shows a year across various cities, including Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Boston, and many more.

Over the years, the band has covered fantastic hits by their idols. However, they finally dropped their debut album with all original tracks, Hot Dads in Tight Jeans. The 2020 album contains outstanding singles, such as “Doobie Bounce,” “Step,” “Bad Tequila,” “Song for Another Night,” and more. Last year, the band released a string of new singles, “Float,” “Give Me the Night,” and “Snow.” Fans are speculating that there is an upcoming studio effort in the works. Best $20 I've spent on a show in years!! The band was absolutely phenomenal!! The closest I could ever get to seeing Led Zeppelin and The Who! The newly renovated Variety Playhouse is now perfection, there isn't a bad seat in the whole venue and the sound quality is perfect! This was the best father daughter concert!

Adelaide Pointe cited by EGLE for environmental and permit violations

MUSKEGON, MI -- Adelaide Pointe, Muskegon’s new marina and multi-use property, is under scrutiny for violating environmental laws, according to the state.

Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) issued a violation and enforcement notice to the mixed use development on Monday, June 17.

The letter from the Water Resource Division stated its “requesting escalated enforcement action for violations” for four different violations.

The department is claiming an inspection discovered significant violations of environmental laws and unpermitted uses and construction.

Hugh McDiarmid Jr., EGLE communications manager, said Adelaide Pointe’s developer, Ryan Leestma, conducted extensive modifications to the two on-site peninsulas, including: Unpermitted filling of wetlands, extensive installation of rock riprap in areas that were permitted as natural shoreline project mitigation, and widening the peninsula into Muskegon Lake, an unauthorized taking of Public Trust Waters.

Additional permit violations include, unauthorized widening of dock segments to facilitate the installation of unpermitted fueling stations and failure to construct the fishing pier/wave break structure, as permitted, negatively impacting movement of fish and other aquatic life.

EGLE anticipates conversations with the developer to discuss resolution of the violations, which could include fines and requirements to remediate environmental damages that are occurring or will occur as a result of the unauthorized work, McDiarmid said in a statement to MLive/Muskegon Chronicle.

Leestma said he was taken off guard by the letter and the list of violations. The letter dates interactions between EGLE and Leestma in March, April and May in which the department issued notices or met in person.

“After reviewing [earlier] complaints, we became concerned about other aspects of the project, which resulted in a more comprehensive inspection that resulted in the most recent violations,” McDiarmid said in a statement.

Leestma said he toured the property with EGLE representatives for a site inspection on May 17, a week before the marina opened, but did not receive feedback on their findings.

Receiving a phone call and an enforcement letter nearly five weeks later, Leestma said, was “more aggressive than they ever had to be.”

“We could have had just a decent conversation about it and figured it out − and I will have that − but I think that their response was draconian, inaccurate and claims jurisdiction in areas where they have none,” Leestma said.

Leestma said he takes issue with specific findings around measurements, environmental impacts and factors like water levels that changed construction plans.

In response to EGLE’s claim of “construction of an unpermitted marina” on the Hartshorn Property, Leestma said his permit is still pending so the developer found a workaround to keep operating in the meantime.

The pending permit is for a dock for in and out service for boats. Instead of a dock, Adelaide Pointe currently has a 40-foot long boat anchored to the bottom of the lake. When boats are brought out of the dry marina they are lowered into the water, tied to the anchored boat and passengers walk across the anchored boat like they would a dock.

This is a “short-term workaround” until the permit for the dock is approved, Leestma said.

He said these anchored boats are registered with the Secretary of State and he notified the Army Corps, Muskegon County Sheriff’s Department and Department of Natural Resources.

The letter from EGLE states the department received complaints around this “unpermitted marina” and a boat launch below the ordinary high water mark.

Plans for Adelaide Pointe, Muskegon’s first new marina in 30 years, have been in the making for three years. The $250 million project has faced some criticism and had construction hiccups.

In March, contractors incorrectly dredged a portion of wetlands area on the wrong side of the peninsula, impacting wetlands undergoing restoration. Adelaide Pointe posted on social media admitting to the mistake said they stopped dredging and contacted EGLE immediately.

Although Leestma takes issue with many of EGLE’s violations, especially the alleged negative environmental impacts, he said this hurdle feels like “outrage shopping.”

However, he plans to work with EGLE on finding a remediation plan. He does not expect these violations to interrupt operations, he said.

“I feel like someone is making an overt attempt to be as critical as possible,” Leestma said. “But if there are things that are off, then absolutely, we can do something about it. Everybody here has the best of intentions.”

EGLE did not provide specifics around remediation efforts or fines. McDiarmid said those would be determined after conversations with Leestma.
